Port Clinton Art Festival Coming Up BY JULIE KEMP PICK

G

azing at beautiful artwork is a feast for the eyes, but festivalgoers will also have the opportunity to let their creative juices flow by participating in interactive art demonstrations at the Port Clinton Art Festival, August 27-28. “One of the most exciting things at the festival this year will be the art demonstrations, and Richard Borden will be doing an ancient art form known as Ebru art or marbled paper,” said Amy Amdur, president of Amdur Productions. Amdur developed the Port Clinton Art Festival 33 years ago. Borden is among the 100 new artists appearing at the festival this year. Amdur described the process for creating Ebru art: The silk scarf demonstration will be done in vats that are about two feet wide and 10 feet long, and the process involves floating special pigment on top of the water, while Borden demonstrates swirling techniques. The swirling forms different shapes like paisley or other designs. Continued on PG 12

HIGHLAND PARK GRAD MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT BY GREGG SHAPIRO

I

n December 2015, Highland Park native Jesse Kovarsky made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-nominated revival of Fiddler On the Roof, now playing at the Broadway Theater in Manhattan through December 2016. Kovarsky isn’t playing just any part. He’s the symbolic titular fiddler, whose rooftop balancing act and fiddling opens the show with the triumphant “Tradition” number. A member of the Highland Park High School class of 2006, Kovarsky is a graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. No stranger to Fiddler On The Roof, Kovarsky appeared in a production at Highland Park High just a few years before returning to it on Broadway. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jesse about the show and more in July 2016. Gregg Shapiro: Jesse, I’d like to begin by congratulating you on the success you’ve achieved in your Broadway debut in Fiddler On The Roof. Jesse Kovarsky: Thank you so much! GS: What has the experience of being in Fiddler on the Roof meant to you? JK: I think it’s provided many different exciting opportunities for me to reflect upon. As a performer, as a dancer it’s given me a chance to be part of a show that I find severely meaningful and is communicating a message that I think transcends across many different cultures and ideals. It reaches a broad audience. When I have performed

Jesse Kovarksy (right) in the 2015 production of Fiddler On the Roof at the Broadway Theatre in Manhattan.

in other shows, the audience can tend to be a little bit smaller and more niche, especially in terms of contemporary dance. It’s a gift as a performer to perform for a large scale (audience) and to reach so many different people. Also, to get to be performing in a role that some people would consider relatively iconic; it’s amazing to be in the title role, to be a Jewish person retelling a

story of my people’s history. GS: What was it like to perform with the cast on the Tony Awards broadcast in June 2016? JK: It was so exciting. It was quite the buzz. We had to rehearse at the Tonys really early in the morning and then we had to do our own show and then go back to the Tonys to perform in the evening. It was really

interesting because backstage you got to see all the other casts from the other Broadway shows. It felt like we were representing our own little tribe with our interesting costumes. It was cool to be on a platform showcasing every thing that we have to share. It didn’t feel like a competitive night. It felt celebratory. Especially considering what had happened earlier that day in

Orlando. It became a meaningful experience. One memory that comes to mind is when I was right about to go onstage and be lifted up in my harness, the cast of She Loves Me was coming off stage and I got a nice highfive from Jane Krakowski. GS: Was theater a part of your life while you were Continued on PG 12

NSCDS Grads are Ready to Make it Happen BY JAKE JARVI

This is the seventh story in a series highlighting exceptional students from the 2016 graduating class.

"I

n that process of growing up, you’re going to realize who you are, how much confidence you have to have, and how much power you hold to change the world,” says Brian Cook, North Shore Country Day School’s (NSCDS) student commencement speaker. “That’s something that North Shore taught me.” Confidence is absolutely the key word. It was the theme of Cook’s speech when he stood in front of his 47 fellow graduates on June 10: If they were inspired to go after something, it was up to them to make it happen. A perfect example of that kind of determined self-actualization was on display for the 10 minutes Cook spoke that day. Even though he’d only been chosen as

the commencement speaker by his class the month before, he’d written the first draft of his speech more than a year prior as a junior. He was the junior class president and had previously served as class president his freshman and sophomore years, as well. Given his involvement with the school, he thought he might have a shot at being the guy at the podium the following year, so he stayed up until 2 a.m. and wrote a draft of the speech for fun. A little over a year later, he was able to realize that goal. “The thing that’s really nice about North Shore is that it’s so creative,” Cook says. “It’s a creative outlet and they allow you to do what you want to do and be who you are. That really helped me in formulating my ideas and getting them out to the public.” Brian Cook. Student council wasn’t the only way that Cook put himself theater program, he was getting out in front of the public. As a up in front of crowds and putting committed actor in NSCDS’s himself out there. That

dedication to acting spilled over into the summer months too as he participated in acting

intensives like Cherubs at Northwestern and Stagedoor Manor in New York.

Cook was able to use tricks he picked up in his training for the stage and apply it to graduation day. Just prior to the ceremony starting, he stepped aside and took a couple moments to clear his mind. He’d reworked the speech with the help of his favorite teacher, Drea Gallaga, he’d rehearsed it in preparation for the day, all that was left was to find his center. “At that point, you know your stuff,” Cook says. “You know what you’re about to do, you don’t need to go over it in exhausting detail. You just have to let it go before you give it your all. I’m especially thankful for my parents and my teachers because they were so supportive. as a teenager. I don’t think it had as much weight or impact on me then. Now, I’m so much more appreciative that I’ve had that experience, to have a history with the show before I got into the show. What’s cool about the show is that everyone I engage with about the show has some kind of personal relationship with the show, whether they’ve seen it or been a part of it. It’s amazing to get to be a part of the Broadway revival and have these people approach me with their experiences. GS: What was the first touring Broadway musical that you ever saw in the Chicago area? JK: I think one of the first ones I was supposed to see was The Lion King, but I got sick. I believe that Les Miz was the first one I actually saw. GS: Do you have an all-time favorite musical? JK: Gypsy is my all-time favorite musical [laughs]. I love that musical so much GS: Can you please say something about the demands of being a dancer? JK: It’s a huge physical requirement on your body. Not only do you have to dance on stage for your job but you have to spend a lot of time conditioning yourself. I feel like a lot of my free time is spent prepping my body for the show and easing my body and trying to remove any kind of muscular tension. I’m either constantly going to yoga or pilates or keeping up with my training and

going to dance class; constantly going to physical therapy and getting acupuncture and massages just to prevent injury. As you get older and you use your body more and more, the more active you are with it, the more susceptible you are to injury. As a dancer, if you’ve ever been injured, you spend the remainder

The Taste will run throughout the Port Clinton Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Taste of Highland Park will continue after the festival ends on Saturday evening until 10 p.m. “It’s a community celebration with food and music,” said Amdur. “The festival began 33 years ago with 40 artists, and about 10 years ago we added the Taste of Highland Park to focus on all the great restaurants here.” Though the art show is geared for families, Amdur advises leaving your dogs at home: "The pavement is usually hotter than you can imagine," she said. "It’s not a dog park and I’ve seen too many dog fights. In addition to her vast

growing up in Highland Park? JK: Yes. I started doing theater through Apple Tree Theater, where I got my first interest. I did their summer camp. Then I did Eileen Boevers Traveling Troupe. We did some singing and dancing throughout the Chicagoland area. My first year, we got to perform in Italy, which was an amazing experience. It gave me the travelbug from that point on and it made me excited to possibly continue performing. When I got to high school, I feel like that’s when I got to explore theater. There wasn’t so much theater in elementary school or junior high. (In high school) I did the musicals and a few straight shows. I was very involved in the theater program there. GS: What about after high school? JK: I decided not to pursue theater in college. I was a little apprehensive at first. Originally, I was going to go to school to do a self-determined journalism major. That infrastructure didn’t work out with my school. Then I discovered dance and started dancing in college. GS: I understand that you were in a production of Fiddler when you attended Highland Park High School. JK: Yes! I played Avram the bookseller my sophomore year of high school. That was my first experience with Fiddler. It was cool to get see it through that lens ART FEST Cont from PG 1

GS: It was recently announced that Fiddler on the Roof will be closing in December 2016. Have you started thinking about what comes next for you? JK: As a dancer and an actor, the hustle is always there. Even when you have a show, you always have the thought in your mind about what’s next. I’m trying to decide if I want to stay in musical theater or go back into the dance world or pursue the straight theater world. I’m exploring what avenues are in front of me and what opportunities I see ahead. I definitely want to stay performing. It’s really about whether the right project comes along. GS: Do you have interest in film and television? JK: Sure. I wouldn’t deny myself the opportunity. I’m definitely interested in pursuing it. But before I pursue I would have to do a little more training. I’m interested in that realm. First and foremost I consider myself a performer at heart, whether that means dancer or actor, I think I’m interested in anything that allows me to inhabit that sphere. GS: Do you have any favorite Highland Park hangouts that of your career preventing injury you make a point of returning when you can. To be a dancer you to when you come back to visit? institution. I love going to Ravinia. It’s so magical and unique. Actually, my new favorite place in all of Highland Park is in Ravinia called Coffee Station. It’s on St. John’s across from the train station, right next to Abigail’s. They do such a good job. Every time I come to Highland Park I make a point of getting a coffee from them. GS: Finally, Jesse, what are the rewards and challenges of being a triplet? JK: [Laughs] No one has ever asked that. It’s a great question. I think it provided a really healthy way of growing up. I grew up and went through phases of life with someone beside me. Whether we were immensely close or not, it always felt like I had a companion at every rite of passage. It added a uniqueness to my identity know that I’ve got two other people in my life who are supremely connected to me. While we have all made different life choices, we are supportive of each other. I think having that unconditional support has allowed me to take risks in my life knowing that I have my brother and sister there who will keep me in touch with who I am. As much as I pursue being a strange, weird artist, going to funny and obscure jobs or even having an incredible job on Broadway, I always feel like they give me a sense of groundedness. They always bring me back to normality and who I am. I think that’s how being a triplet has helped me.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

Heavenly Pastries BY STEVE SADIN

N

orth Shore residents no longer have to wait for the Wilmette French Market on Saturdays to buy delicious baked goods from St. Roger Abbey French Patisserie: The popular organic French bakery run by nuns has opened a bakery cafe in downtown Wilmette. Painted a bright, warm yellow inside with a sign saying “Bless this home and all who enter,” the bakery features all of the homemade baked goods people have come to enjoy at the French Market, plus an assortment of coffee drinks, teas and cold beverages. Tables both inside and outside the store invite visitors to linger and enjoy traditional French pastries. Sister Mary Valerie estimated that St. Roger Abbey has been selling at the farmer’s market for over 10 years. She said Wilmette has always been a welcoming

community, and they decided to open a bakery in the village after a customer encouraged them to consider the vacant storefront located at 1101 Central Avenue, formerly the home of Heavenly Hearth Bakery. “We have such a good relationship with our customers,” Sister Valerie said. “They are very respectful.” Fraternite Notre Dame was started in 1977 by Bishop Jean Marie Kozik with the mission to serve the poor not only in the Chicago area, but also around the world. Sister Valerie said all of the proceeds from the bakery, French Market and their shop in Vernon Hills — support their humanitarian work. The religious order has a soup kitchen at its church on Chicago’s West Side, as well as a food pantry. Sister Valerie said the nuns regularly visit prisons, hospitals and elderly people in their homes. “The customers learn where

the money is going so they like to spend their money here,” Sister Valerie said. Sister Valerie estimated there are about 60 nuns, mostly from France, in the order. Relying on their own experience growing up in France, the nuns have developed recipes for cakes, pies, cookies and croissants — a full assortment of traditional French pastries — that they’ve refined over time. “When we started making macarons it was not easy in the beginning,” Sister Valerie said. All of the baking is done in a commercial kitchen in the western suburbs and delivered fresh to the Wilmette bakery. The entire operation has a wholesome feel to it, right down to the organic ingredients. “It’s very important to people’s health,” Sister Valerie remarked. Sister Valerie said the most popular item is the macaron, which is offered in an assortment

of flavors such as strawberry, pistachio, cappuccino and coconut-apricot. The bakery also sells a few savory items, such as ham and cheese crepes, a variety of

quiches and pizzas. The new bakery has been open for about one month and seems to be staying busy. “So far people have been very nice coming here,”

Sister Valerie said. St. Roger Abbey French Patisserie is open Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

North Shorts Musings by Mike Lubow

“What’s That Smell?”

W

hat’s that smell on Lake-Cook Road? You’re driving east, passing Northbrook Court. Let’s see. It’s not entirely bad. Strong coffee maybe? No, that’s not it. Whoa, now it’s getting unpleasant, with a tang of chemlab acid. You drive a little further, and suddenly: mystery solved. You see a skunk in the middle of the road, sadly smashed, black and white with a bit of red. You remember the old joke

from childhood, “What’s black and white and red all over?” (It works better when spoken, so you can’t see the spelling of the word “red...” ). You were just a kid, so you didn’t know the answer. When a grown-up said, “A newspaper,” you still didn’t get it because the pun (red, read) went over your head. Yeah, it reminded you of that for a moment. Then it reminded you of something closer to this time and place. A few years ago, your nosy dog surprised a skunk on a shadowy North Shore lawn and got sprayed in the face. That can

leave a lingering memory, but also a weirdly noteworthy one. Noteworthy, because while it was happening, you noticed that your dog seemed to be really enjoying it. She swooned in skunk smell ecstasy. Considering that dogs’ noses are way more sensitive than ours—a fact recently confirmed by a friend who’s an ENT doctor—you have to muse about your dog’s LIKING this acrid aroma. Once again, you realize that you don’t need sci-fi stories or a stroll through the zoo’s exotic animal house to find the weird... It’s licking your face.

LOVE & MARRIAGE

Communication is the Problem I

Joanna Brown

was trapped in a slow moving elevator this week and actually listened to the lyrics of the 1976 song “The Things We Do For Love”. Among them: Communication is the problem to the answer You’ve got her number and your hand is on the phone The weather’s turned and all the lines are down The song by British band 10cc tells the story of making up after a fight, and the efforts made to win back love. But the tale stood in stark contrast to another story I read recently, about how little effort men make to woo love these days. Consider New York Yankees outfielders Clint Frazier, who used Twitter to express his interest in Instagram model Jen Selter. “@JenSelter now that both of us are in New York, I think it’s only fair you let me take you on a date! #SelterFrazierDate,” Frazier tweeted Aug. 4. And

before you chalk it up for drunken bravado, know that Frazier retweeted it five hours later with the added message, “make this happen! #SelterFrazierDate.” Now, Selter has more than 1 million Twitter followers, and likely didn’t bat an eye at yet another proposal from a fan. She’s a fitness enthusiast, and therefore most of her social media pictures involve swimwear. I imagine she hears from many interested fans daily. It would be so much easier (though still not 100 percent accurate) for her to weed out the weirdos if we could go back to 1976 – heck even 1996 – when interested gentlemen had to man up and place a phone call. I remember whole 30-minute scripted sit-coms that told such a story: boy calls cute girl, gets busy signal; boy calls cute girl again and again and again, dad finally answers, boy panics and hangs up; boy calls again and asks to please speak

with cute girl, dad says girl is taking a shower and will call back; and so on and so forth. It was a tedious process, but it weeded out the casual fans. Social media, Caller ID and Call Waiting have eliminated this filter, and women are all the more miserable for it. So said a recent story reported by the Washington Post. Researchers from Queen Mary University of London, Sapienza University of Rome, and the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group created 14 fake profiles on the dating app Tinder. Pretending to be both men and women, the research team liked everybody within 100 miles of London and then waited to see how those people they “liked” would respond. The fake male profiles received little attention; they matched with others less than 1 percent of the time. The fake female profiles were much more popular

— about 10 percent of people (mostly men) liked them back. The research team further watched to see how many people started conversations with their decoy personas, and found that 7 percent of men who matched with a fake profile sent a message, compared to 21 percent of women. The research team determined from these observations that men are much less discriminating online; they are more likely to match with a pretty girl, but also much less likely to follow through with a message. Women, on the other hand, tend to match when they are serious about following through and connecting. The moral of the story is that the way to a women’s heart runs through her phone, but not any of the fancy, new-fangled apps she’s installed. Ma Bell is still your best bet, gentlemen. CHANNELING THEIR ENERGY Nathan brothers stoked to stroke across the English Channel — and benefit Keshet BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

ALL IN: Reeven and Levy Nathan, seen here in Lake Michigan, will attempt to swim the English Channel. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

R

eeven Nathan was a freshman at Highland Park High School at the time, biking somewhere in Barrington with a phalanx of elite, considerably older riders for the first time. The teen tried to keep up with the men. The men pedaled, pedaled hard, occasionally looking back and shrugging as the distance between them and the boy grew. They dropped Nathan. In other words, they refused to slow down for the overmatched rookie. Harsh. “I backtracked, found my way home,” Nathan, now 23, recalls. “I’m pretty good at navigating.” The humbling experience steeled Nathan, a high school swimmer and budding triathlete back then. He had given up ice hockey and its late-night commitments to concentrate on becoming a triathlete. Triathletes like to train in the morning, early morning. Nathan woke up at 4:15 a.m. for

that rude awakening in Barrington. “Reeven became really determined after that,” Jorde Nathan, Reeven’s father, says. That’s putting it mildly. Reeven Nathan swam and set program records at HPHS; delayed his enrollment at Amherst College in Massachusetts to volunteer for a year as a combat fitness trainer for the Israeli Army; swam at Amherst; became an elite triathlete at the international level; and recently landed a job as an associate finance officer for Amgen, a bio-pharmaceutical company based in Thousands Oaks, California. He asked — and received permission from — his superiors at Amgen to delay his start date. He wants to do something this month, something special. Something grueling. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Nathan wants to swim across the English Channel with his not-solittle little brother, 6-3, 185-pound

Levy Nathan, a senior-to-be at HPHS who touched fifth in the 200-yard freestyle at the state swimming and diving meet last winter and owns multiple program records. Want a perspective on what the Nathans hope to achieve? Fewer people have swum the English Channel than have climbed Mount Everest. The shortest distance from England to France via the channel is 21 miles, though many swimmers usually end up swimming more miles than that. Currents usually push the swimmers off the straight line; mileage increases. Their scheduled date for their attempt? It’s, well, fluid. They have been assigned a window, an Aug. 9-16 stretch of time. “They have to get there and wait,” Jorde, another Amherst College graduate, says. “When they’re allowed to swim depends

on the tide conditions and on the weather.” The brothers were eating dinner at home, their dad sitting nearby, when the audacious plan was hatched. It involved more than the swim. Why not partner the swim with a cause? Jorde, father of four, guided the conversation. The brothers would raise money for Keshet, a Northbrook-based organization that runs programs for children and adults with intellectual challenges. Reeven and Levy had attended Solomon Schechter Day School in Northbrook, Reeven’s run at the school lasting nine years. Keshet kids and Solomon Schechter Day School kids attended the same gym classes. The brothers initiated a GoFundMe account, naming it “Funding KESHET One Kick at a Time.” Its fund goal was $10,000. It raised $10,307. An anonymous donor contributed $2,500 to it in late July.

“Our dad was encouraging when we started talking about [the English Channel swim],” Levy Nathan, a master scuba diver who turns 17 on Aug. 31, recalls. “What he asked us later was, ‘Is there a way you could make this better?’ I think it’s a perfect thing, doing this for Keshet.” Reeven Nathan had wanted to attempt the swim for six or seven years, ever since he learned one of his triathlon teammates, Becca Mann, accomplished the feat at the age of 13. “It’s the pinnacle of swimming,” Reeven says. “You get to wear a suit and goggles, that’s all.” The brothers’ siblings, Sophie and Chase, also received the “highly committed” gene. Sophie, Jorde and Helene’s No. 2 (after Reeven), has worked with HIV/ AIDS kids in Africa. It’s critical that HIV/AIDS patients take their medication at the right time each day. Sophie got behind the

drive to make sure young patients at a clinic in Kigali, Rwanda, received wristwatches. Chase, a former HPHS golfer, intends to serve as a member of the Israeli Special Forces before enrolling next year as a music/environmental studies student at USC. Back to Reeven, an Arabic/ Islamic studies major at Amherst. Some 10 years ago, after getting dropped, he got back on his bike a couple of days later and rejoined that contingent of elite cyclists. He did a better job of hanging with the men, some of them three times his age. Years later, having established his status as a crack triathlete, Reeven Nathan, in the middle of another spin somewhere in Lake County, heard a couple of words from one of the men, a couple of glorious words to his ears. The man had shouted an order, to none other than Nathan: “Slow down.”

SPORTS

HER GAME SPEAKS VOLUMES Talkative, friendly Hickey is on course for a big fall season BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

M

argaret Hickey, a golfer, would be a first baseman, only a first baseman, if she were to wake up one morning and arrive at a softball diamond instead of a golf course. First basemen like to chat with base runners from opposing teams, and there’s plenty of time to converse and listen during the downtime between pitches. Perfect. Margaret Hickey, a senior at Loyola Academy, and the first base position would be an ideal fit, a golf-glove-on-lefthand match. “One of the things I love about golf is the social aspect of it,” Hickey, a Ramblers varsity member since the start of her freshman year, says. “I like to talk during rounds. I’ll start talking with girls from other schools, right there at the first tee box, asking them about life, about high school, about tournaments they’d played. Might as well get to know them, since we’re going to spend hours together playing golf. “We sometimes get to the point where we have to pause our talking to hit a shot.” The talk of the towns and the villages along the North Shore in late July, particularly in golf circles? Hickey. The Glencoe native reached the final round of match play at the 36th Chick Evans Junior Amateur Championships at the par-72 Itasca Country Club on July 28, after shooting a tourney-tying-best 78-71 in stroke play to qualify for match play. Barrington High School incoming freshman and Inverness resident Caroline Smith defeated Hickey 4 and 3 for the title on July 30, following a postponement (rain, on July 29) of the matchup. Hickey had downed three opponents to set up the encounter with Smith. “Nice, funny, doesn’t get upset on the course,” Hickey says of Smith, the teen, the new friend in Hickey’s life. Nice, funny, doesn’t get upset on the course. That’s Hickey’s kind of friend, because most would choose the same words to describe Hickey. “Margaret,” Ramblers junior ‘HICK’ UP: Loyola Academy’s Margaret Hickey, seen here during high school action last fall, is putting golfer Nina Rutkowski says, “has together a stellar summer season. The Creighton University recruit recently runner-up honors at a ton of friends. She’s easygoing, Chick Evans Junior Am. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

calming, and she’s always excited to play golf and be around people. Her putting stroke … it’s like what a robot’s stroke would be. It’s a perfect stroke. I’ve never seen her get mad after a bad shot. She might get annoyed, but that lasts only a few seconds. She’ll pretend the bad shot never happened and look forward to the next shot.” The 71 shots Hickey took to complete her second Chick Evans Junior Amateur round last month matched her career-best score, achieved twice, including her runner-up round at the Eisenhower Invitational last fall at Hickory Point Golf Course in downstate Forsyth — the course used to stage the Class 2A girls golf state tournament. Hickey tied for 16th place (81-77) at state in 2015, second among teammates (Rutkowski’s 76-80, 13th-place tie), and LA hauled home the runner-up team trophy for the third year in a row. “She’s very dedicated, very determined,” Ramblers coach Heather Penn says of the 5-foot6 Hickey. “I also like Margaret’s competitiveness, along with the way she comes up with a game plan, a road map, to succeed. Her overall ball striking is consistent, and she’s worked tremendously hard on her short game. Nine times out 10, she pulls through for us. “I’ve been fortunate, being able to coach and watch her serve as a role model for her teammates. She’s great around them, always encouraging, always willing to share information she knows about a golf course.” Hickey got a taste of Loyola Academy girls golf at a young age. She was a fourth-grader when one of her older sisters, Irene (now 25), was a varsity golfer at the school. Margaret remembers watching Irene help the Ramblers capture the Highland Park Invite. Little sis took pictures of smiling champions on that day. “I was wearing a Loyola golf hat,” says the twin (her twin brother, Pete, also plays golf ). “I was the team mascot then. I still have the hat. I now have some-

thing like 10 Loyola golf hats.” The mascot became a varsity golfer as a freshman, in 2013, her round of 79 in tryouts catching the attention of then LA golf coach Jim Jackimiec, who retired as a coach after the ’14 season. Hickey finished in 30th place at her first state tournament, in a tie for 38th-place at her second. From 2013-15, in addition to those three state runner-up showings, Loyola Academy’s girls golf program won three regional championships and a sectional title. Hickey, a Creighton University recruit, had a gloved left hand in each postseason success. Two years ago, before the start of her sophomore year, Hickey shot a hole-in-one at her home golf course, Skokie Country Club in Glencoe. She remembers “swinging and missing a lot” on the same course as a beginner. Her lone ace (so far) at the club was as rare as the number of players who joined the gregarious Rambler for a round on that day: zero. “I was going to play only a few holes that day,” Hickey recalls. “After the hole-in-one, I decided to play 18.” At the Chick Evans Junior Am last month, Hickey and Smith were all square after four holes in the final before rain interrupted play on July 29. They resumed the championship round the next morning. Smith birdied her first hole. Hickey did not. “It was wet, really wet; everything was soaked,” Hickey says. “I chunked a lot of shots, too many. We weren’t out there long. Caroline … she’s a very good player, and Barrington is going to have a great team this fall.” Hickey and her parents, Roger and Mary, ate breakfast at a diner near Itasca CC after the match. It was 9:30 a.m. Another set of a parents and another young golfer sat at the table with the Hickeys. The other golfer’s name? Caroline Smith, newly minted Chick Evans Junior Am champion. “She sat next to me,” Hickey says. “I had eggs and bacon. She had eggs and bacon. We talked.” Of course they did.

HE’S AT IT — AGAIN Weinstein teams with London to form ‘Man Up’ Basketball club BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

DOUBLE TEAMING: Mike Weinstein (left) brings plenty of expertise — and enthusiasm — to a new youth basketball club on the North Shore. Aaron London (right) exhorts campers at a recent Man Up Basketball clinic. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

T

here’s a new player on the North Shore. The Man Up Basketball club has “opened its doors” for boys in grades 1-8. And with Mike Weinstein and Aaron London at the helm, it figures to be a winning endeavor. This tandem brings a ton of experience and expertise. “This is an opportunity to work with younger players,” says Weinstein. “It’s a chance to build a foundation. “We want kids who really want to play the game,” he adds. “Kids who enjoy practicing and training.” Weinstein, a former basketball player at Highland Park High School, was one of the pioneers in youth travel basketball on the North Shore. He started the Rising Stars program in 1996, and he’s the former owner of the Joy of the Game Center in Deerfield. Interestingly, one of Man Up’s first programs — Back 2 School Camp — will be held at the Joy of the Game Center, 158 S. Waukegan Road, on Aug. 15-18 (1-3 p.m.). The Joy of the Game Center is

now owned by North Shore Sports and Wellness (NSSW). “Funny how life works out,” says Weinstein. Even though he sold the Joy of the Game Center five years ago, Weinstein never strayed too far from basketball. In 2012, he formed a high school travel program called Fundamental University, and he can make a pretty impressive claim. All of his seniors have moved on to play college hoops. “I’m looking to keep that track record going,” says Weinstein, who guided this summer’s U17 Young Legends team to a 21-8 record against top competition. Featuring three all-staters — Conant’s Jimmy Sotos, LincolnWay West’s Marco Pettinato and Jacobs’ Cameron Krutwig — this squad capped the summer by losing to Wisconsin United in the championship of Chicago Showdown. Fundamental U is not going away. In fact, it is merging with Man Up. And Weinstein is excited to team up with London, a Glenview native and former co-owner of Illinois Old School.

“Aaron has worked with the younger kids,” Weinstein says. “He loves being in the gym. He loves kids. “And he’s got a lot of energy,” adds Weinstein. “You need a guy like that.” London, who has a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Roosevelt University, has been coaching basketball — middle schoolers and high schoolers — for 10 years. “I was looking [to partner] with someone who has the same energy level for this as I do,” says London, a Maine East High School graduate. Someone like Weinstein. “I’m even more excited about the North Shore kids who will get a chance to learn basketball from Mike,” says London. “The kids in our program will understand the fundamentals of basketball. They’re going to be ahead of the curve.” Growing up in unincorporated Glenview, London had a basketball hoop in the driveway. But when it came to organized sports, he didn’t shoot jump shots. He jumped on fastballs.

“I was a baseball player,” he says. Father of two young girls, Naomi and Makenzie, London taught elementary school for 10 years. But teaching basketball has become his passion. Just ask his wife, Kia. “She’s the one who told me, ‘Man up, and do this,’ ” he says. Thus, the name. London and Weinstein aren’t looking to turn this venture into anything “too massive.” “We’re not looking to build a huge program,” says Weinstein. “If there’s a kid in our program, and I go up to him and don’t know his name, then the program has become too big,” says London. “We’re looking to have only one or two teams at each age group. And each team will carry around nine players.” Like a lot of club programs, Man Up will be using a number of gymnasiums, including Sunset Ridge Elementary School in Northfield and several schools in Northbrook. In fact, Sunset Ridge, located at 525 Sunset Ridge, will be the site for Man Up’s 1st-8th grade Fall Travel Season tryouts

on August 26th and 29th. “People ask me where my office is located,” says London. “I tell them it’s my kitchen table in Mount Prospect.”

young Jim Styer stands in a clothing store, waiting for a customer to finally enter it, browse, maybe try on an item or two. It is the mid-1950s. Styer is a student at Hyde Park High School in Chicago. A quiet workplace irks the teenager. He folds sweaters. He folds shirts. He folds the sweaters again. Kill time and hope somebody, anybody, breaks the silence in the men’s department. “Slow days were boring,” Styer, now 78 and a Highland Park resident since 1965, recalls from a booth at Country Kitchen in Highland Park. “When it was busy, it was great, always great. I like selling.” He started selling insurance in 1960, his line of work today. He still likes selling. Styer is a managing director of Mesirow Insurance at Mesirow Financial. The Michigan State University graduate orders coffee and a bialy with butter. He had consumed a bowl of oatmeal and information from the Wall Street Journal hours earlier, at 6 a.m., the start of his healthy regimen. Ensuing Things to Do in his daily regimen this summer, weather permitting: a round of golf, a bike ride around Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe. James Charles Styer does not intend to sell me insurance from his seat in a booth. I am his student for a hour, enrolled in a course I later dub, “Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park 101.” Styer serves as the foundation’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Launched in 2000 to bolster the healthcare mission of the NorthShore University HealthSystem hospital in Highland Park (formerly High-

land Park Hospital), the foundation — not affiliated with the hospital — has given more than $90 million to nearly 60 organizations, many of them small nonprofits in Highland Park and surrounding communities. “A lot of people think all of Lake County is wealthy,” Styer says. “It’s not. A lot of people need assistance; we’re assisting them. Our focus is on the small organizations, ones that truly need the funds, ones that are doing significant things for many people. There’s this operation in Highland Park [Family Network Right from the Start], addressing needs of families in the basement of a Presbyterian church. It provides prenatal education, classes for kindergartners. The people running it are hardworking people, good people. They deserve our community’s support.” Family Network Right from the Start applied for a grant from Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park. The foundation distributed it. Gladly. The foundation is interested in any organization committed to improving the health of a community’s members. Styer shares another example of a grantee’s worth to the community, noting the impact Friends for Health has had on uninsured and underinsured residents in southeast Lake County. Friends for Health partnered with the Lake County Health Department more than a decade ago. The joint effort paved the way for the construction of the North Shore Health Center in Highland Park, located at 1840 Green Bay Road.

The center opened in 2006. Patients receive competent and compassionate care, medical and dental. Patients heal. Patients return to their families, to their jobs, eager to stabilize at home and to produce at work. Each community has a col-

servicing those people for years. Wonderful. What’s going on there is wonderful.” S t yer mentions GLASA (Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association) in Green Oaks; mentions the van services for the elderly and the sick in Moraine and West Deerfield townships; mentions the Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center in Gurnee; mentions the Cradle Adoption Foundation in Evanston.

Grantees, all of them. There are others. But there are other organizations out there, small nonprofits among them, that receiving health care … people don’t know what Healthcare who normally would not have Foundation of Highland Park been able to receive it,” Styer says. does. This can’t be, Styer insists. “People are afraid to go to a hos- Styer wants to get the word out. pital. Friends for Health, one of Styer, sporting a Fitbit, would be our bigger grantees, has been willing (my guess) to dismount

his bike and climb the highest hill in Lake County to shout the foundation’s mission if it would generate dozens of fresh applications for grants. The foundation has millions and millions of dollars. It does not want to sit on the funds. If you’re looking for a sedentary man in his late 70s, don’t look for Styer. The man likes to move. He works out every day, attacking an elliptical for at least 30 minutes to go with his time on a bike, usually 45 minutes. He has golfed in Canada, in England, in Australia, in Columbia, in Israel and in Mexico. You get to do that when you are a member of the International Golf Society. The group’s next annual outing is set for Sicily, Italy. “It’s like going to camp,” says Styer, married to Merle for 29 years and the grandfather of six. Jim and Merle celebrate their wedding anniversary this month. They plan to redo their kitchen, their anniversary gift to each other, no wrapping paper necessary. The conversation shifts to Styer’s college years, the early ones, his final two years in clothing sales, and his sneaky sense of humor surfaces. He went to the University of Illinois-Chicago for a year before transferring to Roosevelt University in the city, also for a year. “My major at UIC?” he asks, his face dead serious. “It was, ‘Try to pass.’ ” He waits. He chuckles. The serious septuagenarian, running a vital foundation for a number of communities, has a fun side.
