L

ead organizers of this summer’s inaugural Winnetka Music Festival, attended by more than 9,000 people, are wasting no time planning for an even bigger musical event next year.

The two-day festival, held June 23-24, featured outdoor stages, food trucks, a team of 200 volunteers, and lively crowds of listeners gathered on Winnetka’s streets to hear free performances by popular indie bands like Jared and the Mill, Wild Belle and The Accidentals. Organizers say attendees from as far away as Houston, Minneapolis and St. Louis traveled to the North Shore to follow their favorite bands.

t’s been 60 years since New Trier High School has undergone major renovations, and when students return on September 7 they’ll find new stateof-the-art facilities that promote innovative learning.

“I’m thrilled to see the full vision finished by the start of school this year and how exciting that is for our students, staff and community,” said Superintendent Dr. Paul Sally. “There are wonderful new opportunities for teaching and learning in those spaces.”

Sally officially became superintendent July 1 after Dr. Linda Yonke retired in June. He joined New Trier Township High School District 203 about 22 years ago, and most recently served as associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

“We succeeded in doing that.”

The weekend’s music roster included two main stages on Lincoln and Elm Streets, as well a smaller stage erected off Chestnut, featuring bands that appeal to families with young children.

According to organizers, these same three stages will be reprised at the 2018 festival, set for June 15-16.

After tallying attendance numbers and listening to feedback, the event’s directors are expanding the festival by adding two new specialized performance venues.

A small stage inside the Winnetka Chapel adjacent to the Winnetka Community House will be showcased at the 2018 festival for a series of more intimate, acoustic musical performances.

line-up at the last minute, but hosted only two acts last year: a jazz band and a guitar duo.

The 300-seat chapel will provide a quiet, sit-down listening experience for festival attendees, as well as an opportunity to engage with artists up close and personal.

“The chapel will function as an oasis during the festival,” said Val Haller, the festival’s music director. “It offers a nice alternative to the louder, more boisterous street listening experience at the outdoor stages.”

As founder of valslist.com, a boutique music website, Haller is currently using the Winnetka Chapel venue for a series of live monthly concerts she hopes will bridge the gap between last year’s music festival and the next one set for June 2018.

With the exception of a break between November and April, the chapel is hosting regular live music performances by hot, new emerging artists, all of which are public and open to the community.

Separately, organizers are planning a dedicated youth stage to showcase emerging musicians from the local area.

Interested artists would go through a formal audition process after submitting an application and demo video.

“We want to highlight the incredible talent that lives right here on the North Shore,” said Scott Myers.

Myers plans to communicate with New Trier and other high schools to promote the youth stage, adding that festival organizers are not yet ready to begin auditioning new talent or announcing next year’s acts.

“The 2018 festival may include one or two of the main stage bands that played last year, but it will largely feature new new classrooms in the new building.

The new open spaces promote more opportunities for collaboration.

“The space that’s available and the type of furniture that we purchased makes collaboration easier,” said Sally. “The other aspect is environmental with natural light and colors that are throughout the new building. That also has enhanced learning and student engagement.”

Compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act was a key part of the project, as well as increased energy efficiency. Sally emphasized that the district is very cognizant of the importance of energy efficiency and environmental issues. Air conditioning was also added to the main auditorium on the Winnetka (east) campus.

The project will be completed in September on time and on budget.

Voters approved the issuing of bonds for the $89 million referendum on the November 4, 2014 ballot.

The original budget was $103.5 million and the overall budget is $104.7 million.

What’s New Trier’s secret to performing as one of the top schools in the country with an average 2016 ACT score of 27.8?

“The key components have to do with an incredibly supportive community, really hard working students, probably the best teaching staff in the nation, and a set of sender schools that does a wonderful job across the board for preparing kids for New Trier,” he said.

Senior set for another moment at a film fest

Though he’s a math ace in the classroom, Senior prefers a school assignment that requires writing to any that involves numbers.

“I love words,” Senior says.

“While growing up, I read a lot.”

For a writing assignment at Beacon Academy last year, Senior’s main character in a story about a road trip stopped at a Zombie Burgers diner in Iowa and gave his order to a zombie. Later, in Salt Lake City, the character discovered Mormons in a church service were actually robots.

“I ended the story with the character returning home and walking into my classroom,” Senior says.

“He sees me and says, ‘Please stop putting me in horrible situations.’”

It had nothing to with what he had read in a book.

Nor what he had absorbed during a lecture.

It was this: “Ask questions,” Senior says.

“Don’t be afraid to speak up.

Asking questions is a huge part of education. When I take the time to come up with an idea for a film, I think of a ‘What if?’ ” Senior’s future as a filmmaker?

The psychological thriller — with a running time of 35 minutes, including credits — won Best Student Film honors. It also will be featured at the Chicago Horror Film Festival at the Patio Theater on Sept. 23.

She wears her art on her sleeve

etsy Giberson became a fiber wearable artist because she has loved cloth since she was a little girl playing with Kleenex and aluminum foil.

“I used to make doll clothes out of those materials before I could sew,” said Giberson. “I’ve been making things since as soon as I could sit up, and I’ve been drawing things since I began holding a crayon – that’s who I am.”

Giberson is one of 145 of the country’s leading craftspeople who will be participating in the 33rd annual American Craft Exposition (ACE) at Chicago Botanic Garden, September 15 through September 17. There will be a Benefit Preview Party on September 14.

The event will be presented by The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), and guests will have the opportunity to peruse and purchase unique artwork while sup-

porting pharmacogenomics and orthopaedic regenerative medicine research.

The New Hampshire fiber wearable artist has been participating in ACE for years.

“The thing I like most about ACE is the organization that runs it,” said Giberson. “It’s not just a craft show where a promoter is trying to make money; it’s a craft show for a really important cause.”

Giberson explained that her clothing is all about layering, because that’s how she loves to dress. Her layering concept works in all parts of the country from Louisiana to Boston to California.

“I always say to people that I don’t really run a business,” she said. “I’m a studio artist making things that I want to make and hoping that other people like it.

My brand is me.”

Giberson tries to be careful with the amount of water and chemicals that she uses. She said her septic system comes out clean every five years when it’s checked, and she dumps very little waste.

“I’m very frugal, because I come from New Hampshire,” she added.

As Giberson makes her living frequenting craft shows across the country, she’s created wearable art pieces that travel well and seldom wrinkle.

In the event a piece does wrinkle, “You can always do the grandmother trick of hanging it in the bathroom and turning up the hot water in the shower,” she said.

How do other craft shows compare with ACE? “ACE is really top quality, wellattended, and it’s beautifully put together,” said Giberson. “The committee does their homework by attending to the details and it’s a well-run show.”

Giberson said committee members search all over the country to discover new artists.

“They have artists of all ages while some craft shows are trying to appeal to young markets who are not that interested, because they like to shop online. ACE has

a good balance and they bring in new artists,” she added.

ACE will feature an emerging artists category.

Giberson’s machine washable clothing line can be worn by all age groups. She’s equally excited when 15-year-olds like her clothes, as well as older women.

“I like to appeal to all different kinds of women from those who wear the fancy Lululemon exercise clothes to women who are very conservative,” she said.

Giberson tries to walk the whole ACE Show to see what the new designs look like and said she’s most interested in something that’s made by hand.

Giberson explained that the committee tries to bring in new artists all of the time and she’s particularly interested to see someone who’s work she hasn’t seen before.

“At the same time, there are people that I’ve been doing ACE with for about 20 years, and as an artist, I’m excited to see how their work is evolving.”

“Last year, over 7,500 people attended ACE, enjoying the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of more than 140 fine craftsmen and women,” said Koh. David added, “We are so proud

to be supporting NorthShore University HealthSystem’s important research initiatives for pharmacogenomics and orthopaedic regenerative medicine. The dedication shown by NorthShore’s medical practitioners has allowed them to become a leading national force in healthcare.”

ACE will feature distinctive pieces made in the United States, by the country’s leading artists showcasing new achievements in jewelry, ceramics, metal, fashion wearables, glass, furniture, fiber decoratives, leather, wood, mixed media and basketry.

ACE 2017 will be held at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe on Thursday, September 14, with a Benefit Preview Party from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The Show runs Friday, September 15, and Saturday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are more than 150 craft breweries in Illinois, whose growing popularity is tied to a “drink locally” trend.

“The amount of breweries coming up and expanding is huge,” observed Allesandro Vazquez, president of Oswego, Illinois-based Brew Avenue Events, which is mounting the Great St. Joe Craft Beer Festival in Wilmette on September 16.

“There is almost a new brewery opening every month, and every other town is either working on a craft beer project or a brewery is ramping up production. Craft beer is becoming as diverse as the wine market with a proliferation of different styles and ingredients.”

The beer festival will give visitors the opportunity to taste nearly a dozen local labels. It’s a new addition to St. Joseph’s Oktoberfest celebration, now in its 14th year, which traditionally includes an afternoon Antiques Market and Family Fun Fest and an evening party. which will run from noon to 4 p.m. for adults ages 21 and up, will help get the party started.

The local breweries and cideries scheduled to participate include Alarmist Brewing, Right Be Cider, and Revolution Brewing from Chicago, North Shore Cider Company, Temperance Beer Co., Sketchbook Brewing Co., and Smylie Brothers Brewing Co. in Evanston, Ten

Ninety Brewing Company, and Macushla Brewing Company in Glenview, and New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The beer festival will also feature food trucks.

Oktoberfest is one of two primary public events to raise funds for St. Joseph’s school and parish.

“It’s part of our community

outreach to showcase who we are with inclusive events for all ages and who live in all areas of the North Shore,” Dave Mastrofski, co-chair of the festival, said.

The craft beer festival is an aperitif to the main event. “Okotberfest is still the big party,” Mastrofski said. “We’re inviting people to spend a day at St. Joseph’s. I think a fall Saturday spent sampling beers is a great

way to spend the afternoon.”

As with wine, this can be intimidating to the more casual drinker, but craft beer festivals are going a long way toward making the artisan brewing process accessible. “It’s a great way to be introduced face-to-face to the public, to get your beer into people’s glasses, and to talk about your craft and creativity,” said Vasquez.

Mike Walsh was a home brewer for 10 years before opening Macushla Brewing Company in August. The Great St. Joe Craft Beer Festival is his second festival.

Macushla (a Gaelic term of endearment heartbreakingly referenced by Clint Eastwood in the film Million Dollar Baby, and decades before that as the name of the cow in the 1945 holiday film classic Christmas In Connecticut) is a micro, or small batch, brewery and tap room located on Lake Avenue. It shares a parking lot with Hackney’s (Welch’s grandfather purchased Hackney’s restaurant almost 80 years ago).

The festival is a welcome vehicle to “get our name and our good beers out to our neighbors and let them know we’re here,” Walsh said. “Participating in the community is hugely important,

especially the church community.” (Walsh is an alumnus of Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish in Glenview, but his fatherin-law attended St. Joseph’s).

Mastrofski anticipates growing the Craft Beer Festival to include more brewers and food trucks.

“By no means am I an expert,” he said, “but I’m an expert sampler.”

Oktoberfest is on Saturday, September 16 at St. Joseph’s School on Lake and Ridge Avenues in Wilmette. The Antiques Market will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The Family Festival begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. These two events are free.

The Dinner and Outdoor Party runs from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per adult, $20 for seniors, and include a traditional German dinner at 6 p.m. A party with live entertainment follows at 8:30 p.m.

A party-only ticket is $20 per adult.

The Craft Beer Festival will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $45 per adult and include a 16-beer/cider sample passport and souvenir tasting glass. Additional beer sample tickets will be available for purchase.

The air show benefits from its proximity to the Warbird Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization that owns and maintains a large fleet of antique military aircraft in flying condition. The foundation’s mission is to preserve military aviation history by remembering the past and honoring those who have gone before.

Air show attendees can expect

to see paratrooper jumping and mock dogfights between vintage fighter jets. Pilots of the North American F-86 Sabre, flown during the Korean War, will demonstrate aerobatic maneuvers alongside the Soviet era MIG 17 Fresco.

Coogan said one of the most interesting ramp attractions will be two A-10 Warthogs, the famously ugly, high survivability war craft used in front line low altitude action. A duo of T-6 Texan IIs will also be available for tours.

Blended into the tactile, educational aspects of the show will be plenty of entertainment and

spectacle in the skies overhead.

The air show’s opening ceremony will kick off at noon with a 9/11 tribute featuring a color guard, the singing of the national anthem, and a dramatic presentation by the Quad City Skydivers.

Also flying in for the show will be the T28 Trojan Horseman and the Yak-52 Aerostar Aerobatic team. Pyrotechnics supplied by The Mad Bombers will be timed to coincide with the military simulated attack runs. A repeat performance by the Dragons Fyre Jet truck – a 1940 Ford pick-up truck powered by an after-burning turbo jet engine – is set to

make several high- speed sprints down the airport runway.

On a somber note, the air show will feature a “missing man” formation in recognition of the recent death of popular Northern Illinois Air Show performer Vllado Lenoch, who crashed in Atchison, Kansas two months ago.

The Air Show’s $15 entry fee covers only a small portion of the cost of producing the event; the majority comes from corporate sponsors, donated aircraft, and volunteer staff and crew. The show contributes net proceeds to local charities.

Chef returns, remakes Grille No. 43

uring his five-year hiatus as the chef at Grille No. 43 in Lake Bluff, Paul Caravelli worked at restaurants in Chicago, Sacramento and San Diego as well as reaching the semifinals of ABC-TV’s The Taste competitive cooking show.

Starting as the Grille’s first chef in 2010,Caravelli,a Lake Bluff resident, left two years later to broaden his experience, but he remained in touch with restaurant owner Ted Boufis.

Now Caravelli is back at Grille No. 43 as its chef,renewing his association with Boufis and remaking the menu at the Lake Bluff eatery with the flair he has acquired with new American casual dining.

“Ted and I remained close,” said Caravelli. “I’m looking forward to reworking the Grille menu and working with Ted again on future projects.”

When Caravelli walked back into his old kitchen he found a restaurant serving mostly the same food customers ordered when he left in 2012.That

ne of Anthony Rodriguez’s youth football coaches was Mr. Petree.

Rodriguez, of Niles, played for the Park Ridge Falcons at the time.

“Coach Petree always told me, ‘It takes guts to succeed in this sport,’ ” Rodriguez — aka prep football’s version of A-Rod — rec alled last weekend, after the senior middle linebacker helped L oyola Ac ademy def eat Bishop Amat (California) 13-6 in Northfield on Sept. 1.

“In games,” he added, “I’d sometimes look over at him on the sideline and see him grab his stomach. That was his way of reminding me, ‘Time to get tough, time to use your guts.’ ” Rodriguez displayed his substantial intestinal fortitude in Bishop Amat’s final possession, hustling all over New Trier’s home field as a disruptive force.

First down: Rodriguez sprinted toward LA’s sideline to limit Lancers junior quarterback Blake Archuleta to a three-yard gain.

Second down: Rodriguez lunged for ward, about 10 yards f rom the line of scrimmage, to nearly intercept a pass.

Fourth down: Rodriguez chased Archuleta in the Bishop Amat bac kfield, forcing an incomplete pass.

At a time when most of the players on the field were either fatigued or banged up, Rodriguez — an outside linebacker for LA’s Class 8A state runner-up squad last fall — appeared as f resh and as ferocious as a starter on a game’s first possession.

“His defense … he’s a rock,” Ramblers senior running back Hamid Bullie (13 carries, 37 yards) said. “Anthony can flatout play. He’s big and strong, a beast who plays with a lot of heart. His heart will take him a long way, will take us a long way.

“I consider him one of the best linebackers in the state.”

Rodriguez met his coaches’

Bringing the energy Vibrant Mottlowitz serves as a strong front-row presence for HP volleyball team

reigning Co-member of the Month at Orangetheor y Fitness in Bannockburn knows a thing or two about playing volleyball for the Blue and W hite a t H i g h l a n d Pa rk H i g h School.

Miranda Mottlowitz is her name, and she is a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter for the Giants, who went 2-3 at the Summer’s End Tournament at New Trier last weekend and own a 4-5 overall record.

The other Co-member of the Month at Orangetheor y Fitness (OF) in Bannockburn?

None other than Mottlowitz’s mother, Lori. “ I star ted working out t h e r e s i x m o n t h s a g o, ” Miranda says of OF, which offers group personal workouts based on high-intensity inter val training for those looking for a regimen that is par t c ardio vascular, par t strength-centric. “ I t ’s g re a t , ” s h e ad d s . “ There’s rowing, lifting. It ’s about improving your power and strength and endurance.”

One of HP ’s three returning all-Central S uburban League North selectees (with junior outside hitter Ireland Hieb and junior setter Allyson Gordon), Mottlowi t z , a t h i rd - ye a r v a r s i t y member, ser ves as a reliable f ront-row presence for Giants coach Beth Peterson’s crew.

A versatile one, too.

Peterson shifted Mottlowitz f rom outside hitter to r ight-side hitter af ter a season-opening, three-set loss to Niles West (a Class 4A Final Four team in 2016) on Aug. 22.

“She’s willing to do whatever it takes to better the team,” Peterson says of Mottlowitz, who finished with 154 kills, 66 digs and 27 aces for a squad that went 18-14 (6-4 in the CSL North) last fal l. “ Ver y positive. S he keeps her teammates upbeat with her personality and her supportive, encouraging style of leadership.

“I also like her high court IQ.” The tri-captain (with Gordon and senior outside

hitter Dana Pulfer) and Adversity club member looked up to her sister, Maxie, when Maxie played varsity ball at

HPHS. Big sis is a 6-foot outside hitter, captain and communication/digital media design major at Lake

Forest College these days.

“I loved watching her play when she was in high school,” says Mottlowitz, whose father, Kevin, was a standout wrestler at the University of Illinois and married his Glenbrook South sweetheart. “Always positive, always moving, always on the go. Kept ever ybody on their toes.”

Mottlowitz ranks third among Giants in kills (48) after nine matches this fall, behind Hieb (72) and junior outside hitter Olivia Carter (57). She struck a combined seven kills in Summer’s End Tournament wins over Argo a n d Ve r n o n H i l l s l a s t weekend. Earlier, in a 25-21, 23-25, 25-11 defeat of Niles North on Aug. 29, Mottlowitz smacked a team-high five aces.

“Miranda is consistent and a great teammate,” Pulfer says. “The biggest thing with her — she’s always positive.

If someone is feeling down, she’s there with a smile and the willingness to provide energ y and a good vibe.

She’s cool, like a sister to me.

She has a shy side, and I see that side off the court. On the court, she’s not shy at all.

Mottlowitz’s attack stat (2 kills) was modest in a 29-27, 25-20 home loss to Lake Zurich High School on Aug. 24, but she kept 10 other balls in play and made only one error during a match in which the Giants near l y overcame a 24-19 deficit in the first set.

“Bring energy, no matter where I’m playing,” Mottlowitz, a former club member of Cr ystal Lakebased Sky High Volleyball, says of her primar y role on the 2017 crew. “I like to make sure we’re all together and see to it that my teammates make the right choices.”

LF’s Summerville will open season on the sideline

ummerville.

Lake Forest High S c h o o l ’s all-time leading rebounder, Maeve Summer ville, sustained a dreaded ACL tear in the summer and will be out for an extended period of time.

“I’m hoping to be back by January,” said Summerville, who has grabbed 769 rebounds in three varsit y seasons.

The three-year starter, who helped the Scouts to 23 wins and a Class 4A regional title last season, also ranks second in career blocks (157), second in career three-point field goals made (111) and fifth in career scoring (879 points).

The 6-foot-1 Summerville, who plays her club basketball with ALL IN Athletics, incurred the injury during tournament action in July.

“Bad news in July, that’s for sure,” Lake Forest head coach Kyle W ilhelm said. “It ’s

tough to lose a player of her caliber.”

Summerville, a fun player to watch, was on pace to finish her career with the Scouts with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

“She’s a player with a ton of value,” added the coach.

“Prior to the injury, she had improved in a lot of aspects of her game, especially offensively.”

Wilhelm loves Summerville’s optimism.

“Maeve’s a tough kid,” said Wilhelm. “She will do everything possible to come back and play this season.”

Summer ville, a two-time all-NSC selection, has been a fierce rebounder and shot blocker. S he became the Scouts’ all-time leading rebounder last winter, eclipsing Grace Torkelson’s mark of 755. Her three-year total in blocks is second to Sarah Lake Forest High School’s Maeve Summerville goes for a rebound during regional action last season.

Summerville, who still has aspirations of playing basketball in college, also has been one of the school’s best threepoint shooters. She is one three-pointer shy of tying Janie Hodgkinson’s school record (112).

“It [probably] won’t be one player stepping up and picking up the slack for her,” Wilhelm said. “It will be a collective effort. “ We’re fortunate to have a lot of quality players coming back this season,” he added.

One of the retur ning players who had a breakout summer was sophomore point guard Halle Douglass.

Douglass, who also played her club ball with ALL IN, has received an offer f rom Loyola University.

“There are a ton of schools interested in her, ” said Wilhelm. “A lot of people will be monitoring her progress.”

The boy had talked a bit too much at school. OK, maybe too much. The boy’s parents needed to know.

hat was years ago.

Wettermann is now a senior holding midfielder for the Lake Forest High School boys soccer team. He’s still loquacious, still fun-loving, still smiley, still ready to call today the best day of his life and listen carefully to your arguments if you think otherwise.

“I like to talk,” the 6-foot, 165-pounder says with a contagious smile. “Yes, I did get in trouble when I was younger. But that’s me. I’m positive, and I like to interact with others. I smile a lot because it brightens the days of others.”

“I love our team; it has great team chemistry,” Wettermann says. “And I enjoy being around all of my teammates.”

Wetterman was around soccer at an early age. His father, also a holding midfielder, played soccer for two seasons at Marquette University before a pair of ACL tears cut his competitive career short; he transferred to the University of Illinois. His brother, a Princeton graduate, also roamed pitches as a holding midfielder.

Wettermann, a caddie at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest when he is isn’t driving lengthy passes to his forwards, is interested in playing soccer at the Division III level, maybe at one of the schools (University of Chicago) he is considering. Electrical or mechanical engineering might end up being his major.

For now, Wettermann has designs on helping his team win regularly — and on talking whenever he feels like it.

“He’s a playmaker who creates opportunities for us,” Danneker says. “Christophe keeps our shape, and he plays great ‘D’.

Moves well, too, back and forth, which is really important. That left foot of his is powerful …

teams have to watch out for that.

“And he’s a very outgoing guy,” Danneker adds. “He’s good with teachers, good with teammates, good with other students at school.”

Notable: Scouts junior Thomas Cutting scored a goal, and sophomore teammate Carter Collis contributed an assist in Lake Forest High School’s 4-2 loss to Carmel Catholic in the match for fifth place at the North Shore Shootout at LF’s West Campus on Aug. 26. … LFHS sophomore goalkeeper John Walsh made eight saves in a 1-0 loss to Loyola Academy on Aug. 31.

Life as a candidate a juggling act for Biss High School in Indiana: mathematics. He ended up commuting to Indiana University to take 12 advanced courses.

“I was obsessed with mathematics,” Biss says, adding some of the math students in his classes were homeowners and had spouses.

A 17-year-old Biss tutored a 24-year-old in the latter’s house.

“We became good friends,” Biss says.

Biss earned a bachelor’s degree at Harvard University and a doctorate in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a member of the University of Chicago’s mathematics faculty at the age of 25. Biss’ technique was Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), whereby his students were presented with

he book, Juggling for the Complete Klutz, came with three beanbags. State Sen. Daniel Biss (9th district) — an Evanstonian since 2006, a former state representative (17th district) and a Democratic gubernatorial candidate — received it as a gift from his grandmother.

But Biss did not have to report it to comply with the Ethics in Government Act. He was 13.

“I became a fairly serious juggler,” recalls the 40-year-old, sitting across from me on a bench outside Sarkis Café in Evanston on a sunny Sunday morning. “I ended up juggling balls, clubs, flaming torches. I juggled at a local circus [in Indiana] a couple of times as a kid.

“Juggling and politics,” he adds with a smile, “are not dissimilar.”

The busy, nattily attired man, who had ordered coffee and a gourmet omelet, informs me of his plans for the rest of the day: meet with others later in the morning; drive to Springfield for a session to address a public-school funding plan.

The nature of the night before?

The complete opposite. Biss, his wife, Karin, and their two boys (Elliot, 9, and Theodore, 7) hit a beach to relax and observe meteor showers.

“We stayed there for about an hour,” Biss says. “Time with my kids has been precious since I announced my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor [on March 20 — exactly a year before the Democratic primary]. “Kids digging holes in the sand … what a wonderful sight. Kids, at times, can be complicated, but they’re also loving and insightful and fun, always fun, to be around. Elliot is a passionate reader. He told me one day, ‘I figured out the problem with the Harry Potter books — the male characters always end up more important than the female charac-

ters.’ Then he said, ‘I don’t like that.’ ” What Elliot’s father, the son of musicians and the brother of noted

scripts of definitions and theorems and attempted the prove the results. They then presented the

proofs to their classmates, who critiqued the work under the supervision of Biss.

“By allowing the students to teach and explain in front of the class, they developed a deeper level of knowledge,” Biss says. “It was rewarding for me to see a class develop cohesion through IBL.” After spending several years in the classroom and attaining the position of assistant professor of mathematics, Biss turned his attention to a field that had more to do with people than it had to do with numbers. Politics called.

“I felt an urge to get involved with what was going on in our community,” says Biss, whose state senate district includes Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka.

“I started showing up at meetings, knocking on doors, talking to people, listening. I fell in love with the political arena.”

One of his most rewarding moments as an elected official occurred during his term as a state representative (201113). He championed groundbreaking legislation, giving private-sector workers access to retirement savings accounts through their workplace and making Illinois the first state in the country to enact such a program.

“There were 2.5 million workers in Illinois without a retirement plan, meaning most of them would have to rely only on Social Security and enter poverty after retiring,” Biss says.

“The initiative was backed by both parties, at the state and national levels, but later died at both levels. I kept at it and felt strongly about it. Not all will join the program and benefit from it, but at least it’s an option now.”

Biss is concerned about the shrinking middle class; retirement security is one way to rebuild it.

“People are incredibly hungry to turn Illinois around, and that’s one

of the reasons I’m running for governor,” Biss says. “People and businesses are leaving our state; our state has become a wnational punch line.

I want to change that perception.

And a way to do that, or at least start the process, is by saying, ‘Let’s

Daniel Biss get it together and let’s come together.’ ” Before deciding to run for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Illinois, Biss sat down with his wife and children for lunch at home and made two lists with input from all. One described the good things that could come from running, and the other described the potential bad things.

One of the fears on the bad side: “See less of Daddy.”

But the good outnumbered the bad for the former college math professor.

Biss was all-in, not all-integers.

“My family means so much to me, and I felt it was important to get together with all of them on that day in December,” Biss says. “My wife has been great from the beginning. Intelligent, a desire for social justice, an appreciation for the arts, fun to be around — she has all of those qualities. If I’m considering something involving my campaign, I discuss it with her. I value her feedback and the way she sees things.

“She often opens my eyes to what else is out there, presents a broader perspective. That’s a gift.”
