These journalism miscues are for the birds

hen I taught a journalism class at Lake Forest College, one of my favorite moments was sharing my file entitled “Worst of Journalism,” a collection of eye-popping mistakes published from tiny weeklies to big-city dailies throughout the years. It encompasses about all one could imagine — from The New York Times misspelling Valujet in a headline to a Los Angeles-area publication printing a swear word above an item, when the editor badly mistyped “sheets” — but my favorite involved a story about birds. The 2005 piece featured the headline, “Yards bursting with bird song.” It included an illustration of a hummingbird flying upside down. The graphics department was asked to put in three photographs of cardinals to complete the package. That they did — three shots of white-collared folks with names like Mahony and Egan especially well-known among Catholics. This week, Sheryl DeVore — an avid birdwatcher who co-authored a book called “Birds of Illinois” — shares with readers great spots to see colorful birds on the North Shore, including those who are

■ by bill mclean Don’t judge a house by its exterior. “I know of a house on the North Shore that looks vintage from the outside, with all of its charm and character and distinct architecture,” says Connie Dornan, a broker associate at @properties in Glenview. “But as soon as you enter the house through the front door, you immediately think, ‘This is new construction.’ “It was,” she adds, “completely gutted and rehabbed inside.”

Others prefer the sturdy houses built before World War II, the residences that will likely never graduate to smart-home status. “Some of those houses were built like bomb shelters,” says Ian Robinson, branch manager at Coldwell Banker in Northbrook. “They’ve been around for close to 100 years and they’ll be around for another 100 years. … so solid, very high quality. “That old-home feel, inside and outside, still appeals to people,” he adds. But new construction homes attract other buyers, despite the higher property tax rates that typically accompany them because of greater square footage, on average. Pros and cons exist for both historical and new construction abodes. An advantage of a new home is its builder’s warranty; a disadvantage of a historical home is its age — stone foundations aren’t sound forever, and floors don’t stay level forever. Majestic trees are clear plusses on the grounds of historical properties; a minus occasionally associated with new construction is adolescent foliage. “I like old, historic homes, but I also totally understand why people prefer new construction,” says Margie Brooks,

a broker at Baird & Warner in Highland Park. “There’s a lot less to worry about with a new home. You normally don’t have to pour money into it, year after year, like you do with some older homes.” One of Brooks’ featured listings is located at 247 Prospect Avenue, in Highland Park. Built in 1871, it has been renovated to accommodate luxurious modern living. “Everything inside is new and magnificent,” she says. “The basement was dug out, and now it’s fabulous. The whole place is exquisite and a pleasure to show.” But some buyers purchase a vintage/landmark house with the understanding that they’ll be limited — by their budget considerations in some cases, by strict village landmark real estate >> page 12

guidelines in others — when it comes to altering or rehabbing a house’s interior and exterior. “People who are fans of older homes will overlook the need to have, say, walk-in closets or super-modern amenities,” says Roberta Miller, a broker associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group in Lake Forest. “It’s what they care about that matters, and it’s up to the broker to find that out. “Some,” she adds, “love a certain type of architecture, like the houses in ‘Mad Men.’ There’s something to be said for purchasing a house in a neighborhood that is charming with a longstanding, historical presence. There’s also something to be said for a buyer who works with a builder or architect who is able to translate that buyer’s vision into reality.” Milena Birov is vice president at Heritage Luxury Builders in Northfield and a broker at @properties in Winnetka. She is all for preserving the historic appearance of a block, as are her clients. “People in certain neighborhoods don’t want their new homes to look brand new … don’t want their homes to stick

out, especially along a street with beautiful, historical houses [with landmark designations],” Birov says. “I think it’s a great thing that North Shore villages have preservation committees.” The Kellogg Estate in Winnetka was built in the 1920s. The Pabst Manor in Glencoe appeared in 1936. The @properties-Winnetka listing agent for both is Susan Maman. “Homes likes those, they’re so interesting to me,” Maman says. “They require a special buyer, someone who is into history and unique architecture and beautiful, spacious grounds. “When you walk into one of those homes,” she adds, “you get a sense, a feel, for what it was like to live all those decades ago.” Jean Wright of Jean Wright Real Estate has lived in her Winnetka home on the lake for 54 years. “I’m a historic-house kind of girl,” she admits. “Go ahead, call me that. Young families from the city, they’re more interested in new construction. Not all are, but a lot are. An old North Shore house that has smart-house amenities inside is a house that features the best of both worlds. “It’s all about tastes and preferences, isn’t it?” she adds. “All people don’t like the same things. What I like is eating

coffee-flavored ice cream after putting coffee-flavored powder on it. What do you like?” Among the other advantages of new construction homes is basement depth. Families are spending more time at that level of the home, with the trendy additions of home theaters, sports courts (for basketball and volleyball) and bar areas. “The ceilings of basements in old homes are lower than they are in new homes,” Coldwell Banker’s Robinson says. “Owners back then generally used basements for storage. Floor plans in other areas of old homes are too chopped up and too compartmentalized for some people these days. Kitchens back then … they weren’t very big. They certainly weren’t built to contain an island you see in so many kitchens today.” But you can’t put a price tag on charm, and plenty of that emanates from the eye-popping homes that continue to age gracefully along the North Shore. “People like classic craftsmanship; they like history,” says @properties’ Dornan. “They tend to appreciate those qualities when they stroll by such beautiful, vintage homes. But there are also people out there who just like knowing they will be the first to live in a home. “People,” she adds, “like the smell of new construction.” ■

Bird’s-eye views abound on North Shore ■ by sheryl devore

Standing at Skokie Lagoons on a May day in front of a shrub whose leaves are not quite yet unfurled, I spot it: A scarlet red bird with jet black wings is perched, right at eye level. He’s traveled from the South America to land right here where I can watch him as he retrieves a caterpillar from beneath a leaf. He’s a scarlet tanager —one of more than roughly 200 migratory bird species that can be seen all along the North Shore in spring as they traverse from the southern United States, Central America and South America to their northerly breeding grounds. In May, I’ve heard bobolinks singing their rollicking serenades at Fort Sheridan Preserve and Middlefork Savanna. I’ve glimpsed 25 species of warblers in one day at Skokie Lagoons, the Botanic Garden and Ryerson Woods. I’ve walked along Lake Michigan’s shoreline glancing at graceful terns and shorebirds skittering on the sand at Gillson Park in Wilmette. Unlike chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches and other birds you may see in your yards and at local preserves year-round, migratory birds don’t spend all their time on the North Shore. In spring, woodland birds, shorebirds, grassland birds and wetland birds — all decked in their nuptial plumage — fly through the North Shore. Some will stay to breed in summer; others keep on going. Birds you can see along the North Shore in May include the Baltimore oriole, rosebreasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, scarlet tanager, summer tanager, up to 35 warbler species, up to 17 sparrow species, grassland birds including meadowlark and bobolink; flycatchers; thrushes; vireos; and copious shorebirds and wading birds. Migratory birds often follow Lake Michigan and the Des Plaines River on their journeys. Vegetation along the waterways provides the food and rest these birds need. Here’s a list of some of my favorite North Shore birding spots, with a suggestion on what you might see there. The best time to bird is early in the morning and early in the evening. Wear appropriate clothing and bring binoculars.

Skokie River Nature Preserve, Lake Forest Open Lands, Lake Forest Location: From Green Bay Road and West Laurel Avenue, go west to the end of Laurel Avenue and park. Walk the trail along the Skokie River searching for woodland birds especially warblers, vireos, flycatchers and orioles. This preserve is the former site of a spring bird banding station, and I once retrieved a magnolia warbler and a white-throated sparrow from a net here: they were banded and released. Visit lfola.org Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve Location: At Sheridan and Old Elm Road, continue east into the Fort Sheridan area. Follow signs to the preserve. With its access to Lake Michigan, open grassland and wooded ravines, this preserve offers a look at nearly all groups of migratory birds from meadowlarks, bobolinks and sparrows in the grasslands to terns and shorebirds over the lake to songbirds in the ravines. Migratory hawks also fly by. Visit lcfpd.org Middlefork Savanna, Lake Forest Location: At Route 43 and Middlefork Drive, turn west and drive to the parking lot. Wooded ponds and savannas live in this rare ecosystem where you’ll find nesting bobolinks and meadowlarks in grasslands and wetland birds such as great egrets and great blue herons foraging. Visit lcfpd.org Ryerson Woods Location: The entrance is off Riverwoods Road, south of Everett Road and north of Deerfield Road. Here’s where I found my first blue-winged warbler, black-throated blue warbler, Connecticut warbler, and — well you get the picture. It’s my favorite spot to bird in May. At the east-facing group of trees and shrubs in the Brushwood Center Parking lot, birds including warblers, orioles and tanagers are quite active in the early morning – and there’s usually someone there to tell you what you’re seeing. You can find migratory woodland birds nearly everywhere but especially in the woods and at the waterfall and water gardens. By the prairie, you’ll find several wetlands, which hold shorebirds and waders such as egrets and herons. Thanks to mother-daughter partnership, hair salon is a cut above ■ by sheryl devore

Sonja Feddermann and her mother, Anne Friedman, have been working as hair stylists together for 14 years — seeing each other practically every day. Chatting at The Salon Ltd. in Lake Forest — which they co-own and which is celebrating its 25th anniversary — they laughed as well as spoke matter-of-factly about what it takes to have a wonderful mother-daughter relationship as well as to run a successful business together. Part of it is the hair styling business itself, Feddermann said. “It’s one of those industries where you can touch people’s hearts,” she said. “You can make them feel completely different. It’s not just doing hair. It’s who is this person, how can I make them feel good, how can I make them look their best. “There are not a lot of situations where you can give people instant gratification, instant happiness.” Friedman has spent 36 years in the hairstyling business and owned Anne Charlotte Salon in Lake Bluff before opening The Salon Ltd. with her daughter in Highwood. They moved The Salon to Lake Forest two years ago. Feddermann said she grew up watching her mom revel in her passion – and she loved when her mother worked on her hair. But they didn’t always agree on what mom should do. “I always wanted black hair,” said Feddermann, who today sports long, blonde

hair, just like her mother. But her mother said no. “I couldn’t understand why my mom wouldn’t dye my hair black,” Feddermann said. “Because,” mom piped in. “She was too young. She was 5.” Feddermann recalled her mom doing her hair for senior prom. “She interwove ribbons in my hair,” she said. What color were the ribbons? Feddermann laughed. “Black.” While in high school, Feddermann spent the summers at the salon. “I was always shampooing or answering phones,” she said. She went to beauty school, and there was no question in her mind that she would work with her mother. “We’ve been so close my whole life, why would I not?” Plus she said she likes to be around her mother, just as the clientele does. “I notice the effect she has on people – she established this sense of family with our clientiele. They’re our friends. They’re members of the cast of characters around here.” Both agree that respect, honesty and love fuel their relationship. “That’s the foundation of the perfect partnership,” Feddermann said. “There are times when we look at things differently – but we can have a civilized conversation about it. My mom has always shown me incredible respect.” Friedman said her daughter, in kind, has always treated her with respect.

“I’m the luckiest person in the world working with her,” Friedman said. Mother’s Day, as it has been for the past seven years, will be focused on Feddermann’s daughter and Friedman’s granddaughter, Peri, who will turn 8 in July.

Peri isn’t fussy about her hair style, said Feddermann. “I’m only allowed to trim it. She wants to throw a headband on and go to school. I was like that, too, when I was her age.” ■

Group is dedicated to helping college sexual assault survivors ■ by angelika labno Lisa had the kind of infectious attitude that drew people in immediately. She liked to go out and party — as many college students do — and never thought twice about trusting her circle of friends. One day, Lisa pulled away from her everyday activities, her bubbly persona replaced by paranoia. Lisa was a victim of a common campus crime. Lisa had been raped. This scenario is not uncommon: one in five women will be sexually assaulted in college, according to a U.S. Department of Justice report. The issue recently received national attention when President Obama created the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault in January. That moment became the climax of a 10-year mission led by Lake Bluff’s Anne Searle Bent, the force behind Porchlight Counseling Services in Evanston. “The contrast in 10 year’s time is remarkable,” said Bent. “It’s no longer the dirty little secret on college campuses.” In fact, a front-page New York Times article this week revealed dozens of American universities — including the University of Chicago — are under investigation for their handling of sexual assualt. Many colleges have tried to keep sexual assault cases quiet for fear of scaring away prospective students. Porchlight offers free off-campus advocacy and services to assault survivors and aims to diminish the embarrassment and stigma associated with being sexually assaulted. It collaborates with Chicago colleges and universities by holding educational presentations on campus and training with campus police and faculty. Its efforts have not gone unrecognized: Porchlight was awarded the 2013 Excellent Emerging Organization by the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management. Also in 2013, “One in Five,” a program highlighting Porchlight’s work, won a Midwest Emmy. “You could have knocked me over with a feather, it was

so rewarding,” Bent said. A decade ago, Bent encountered unconcerned responses from Chicago universities regarding sexual assaults. “We hear about that once in a while, but we don’t think it’s a big problem at our school,” they would tell her. Bent, however, knew the reasons behind their naivete. Less than 5 percent of victims report the crime to the police, according to a 2000 study by the U.S. Department of Justice. The reasons range from a lack of evidence to fear that police would not think the incident is serious enough. Moreover, 90 percent of victims know their offender. “Schools either subtly or boldly encourage students to forget about it,” said Porchlight Executive Director Diana Newton. “We’ve had clients — really bright students — get told that maybe they should drop out or take a leave. At that age, you’re at the pinnacle of all of your abilities, physical mental and emotional … then all of that kind of fades away.” The consequences of “forgetting about it” can be devastating. Negative consequences include: acting out sexually, drug and alcohol abuse and self-harming behaviors such as cutting. Subsequently, these women put themselves at risk for repeat assaults, as predators can pick up on their subconscious air of insecurity. Denise Duval, a therapist with Porchlight since its inception, says the effects of assault depend on a person’s support system and sense of self. While some can come out of trauma somewhat unscathed, for others, it is another weight on a house of cards. “Trauma tends to retrigger unresolved past issues, such as bad relationships or insecurities of not being valued,” said Duval. “There are people who find themselves in harmful situations because there’s a part of them that feel that they deserve to be punished.” Duval notes that the failure in today’s managed care is solution-focused treatment on the current issue at hand. In order to effectively break the cycle, Porchlight digs into the survivor’s past relationships and development. Personal

history can reveal underlying issues and determine how one will handle the current trauma. Duval advises that all survivors would benefit from seeing someone. “Even if you have good family support, you need a space to process that yourself,” she said. Porchlight has eight therapists located around Chicago and survivors are matched with the one geographically closest to them. The high-level professional counseling services come at no cost to the survivor, relieving the issue of therapy appearing on his or her parents’ insurance. “We try to remove as many obstacles as possible so that they don’t have to choose between their treatment and their privacy,” said Newton. ■

Reading: My lifeline seems to be The New York Times. It takes me about a week to read it. Listening: Here’s the other side of my life: I’m also a professional musician. I sing, I have a couple of bands, and I play all over the North Shore. I’m always listening to a lot of different things, often for learning as much as anything else. When I was in Vietnam, I was out in more remote areas. What’s very popular there is traditional music. It has bones that are a little bit like Delta blues, and I listened to a lot of that. Watching: When I’m overseas, I don’t

I watched a bit of soccer because it’s king in the rest of the world, but that’s about it. Following: When I’m going to a country like Vietnam, I usually pay attention to the politics — my father-in-law is Vietnamese, and it’s fascinating to talk with someone and hear a humanistic side of a war. When you hear a soldier talk about being on the ground — he had family in the North and fought for the South — it’s very empathetic for both sides.

Then you just see death. You’re just split. My work’s a little political, and in this case it’s more overtly political — I’m interested in seeing Vietnam aside from the war. It’s hard to get [the war] out of your head and go spend time there. This series of paintings presents another perspective on a beautiful, rather gentle Southeast Asian country. Activity: On this two-and-a-half month trip, I did about 80 paintings. I ended up spending the whole trip in the Mekong Delta. On these trips, I leave lots of room for flexibility. I allow myself to follow the wind. In this case, getting to Ken Thai, they have these floating markets that are kind of famous. All the goods are sold from boats. It’s just fascinating — all these boats, all this produce, fish, you name it. It seems like chaos, but it isn’t. If you get there at five in the morning it’s pitch-black and they all have little light son their boats, like fireflies. I probably spent about three weeks there, painting away. I had the opportunity to be a part of their daily life. It wasn’t obtrusive. I was embraced in this strange way —they really welcomed me because they were interested in what I was doing. Eating: I’ve kind of resolved that a broad diet, intuitively, is pretty good for you. When I go on these trips I try to live as indigenously as possible. In Vietnam, I ate street food almost all the time. It’s a very underunderstood cuisine these days. It’s healthy and it’s interesting. What is your favorite mistake? I teach painting a little bit — and I always say to my students, “take chances when you paint.” When you move out of your comfort

Teen finds the recipe for helping the planet

As a junior at Deerfield Academy — a time when getting prepared for the SATs and starting the college search takes time away from classes — Emily Abrams decided to create a cookbook as well. Between homework assignments during the evening, she’d write. “I think the biggest challenge was finding the time to be doing it well,” says Abrams, a Highland Park native. “ T here was the thought I might just finish it in college.” Instead, Don’t Cook the Planet — Emily Abrams a collection of more than 70 recipes from

In a few weeks, Abrams, 19, will graduate from the Massachusetts preparatory school before matriculating at the University of Southern California in the fall. Already, she’s traveled to Berkeley, Calif. and New York City for book signings. In April, she appeared at Strand Bookstore, founded in 1927 in Manhattan, with Michael Oppenheimer — a climate change scientist at Princeton University —to converse about the book. “The small choices make a difference,” she told the audience, when asked about what readers should take away from the book. “Not buying Styrofoam anymore, buying in bulk – tips like that.” The idea for the book originated in November 2012, as Abrams planned a trip to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with Highwood chef Gabriel Viti, among others. As she started to hear theories about how climate change might melt the snow on the African mountain, “we realized we hadn’t seen a book about the integration between climate change and food,” she says. A primer on how to launch a vegetable garden is included in Don’t Cook the Planet. There are question-and answer features, such as “Why choose tap water?” Abrams even interviews a U.S. senator about organic farming. The mix of recipe contributors comprises wellknown chefs — such as Stephanie Izard of Girl &

the Goat in Chicago — and celebrity environmental champions, including Robert Redford, Richard Branson and Chevy Chase (Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote the foreword). Local chefs contribute, including Viti of Miramar Bistro sharing his recipe for linguini with fresh gulf shrimp, while James A. Lovell Jr. and James A. Lovell III of the eponymous Lake Forest restaurant offer a look at summer berry torte. All proceeds from the cookbook will be donated to non-profit organizations. Abrams’ mother, Wendy, helped recruit many of illustration by barry blitt the environmental and political names for the book. She founded Cool Globes, an exhibition that featured more than 120 globes in Chicago in 2007 with the idea of raising awareness about climate change. Then 12, Emily helped by sending a letter to children around the world, who responded with notes saying “Stop Global Warming” in their own language. At Deerfield, she became further enamored with the topic thanks to an advanced-placement course called Cambridge Global Capstone that had just been unveiled. Unlike many courses, regurgitating information for a test was not the goal. “We would have a debate on fracking or speak to the class for five minutes on clean water,” she says. “One of my projects was climate change on the Colorado River. The teacher would come at you with questions, and you had to defend your opinions on the spot. It was everything a class should be to get a rise out of someone.” When asked how she would persuade those who are skeptical about the claims behind climate change to champion her views, she acknowledged she’s not a scientist or an expert. “But there are millions of articles and scientific findings that prove climate change is real,” she says. “I think it’s important for people to be aware of this issue and know that it will be the defining issue of our generation.” Abrams notes she has tried every recipe in the book (“some of them take a long time to make”) and, though she hasn’t considered another project, if she did it would again be a cookbook. During the recent Earth Day, Abrams spoke via Skype with BiteSizeTV in Los Angeles, discussing her book and her thoughts. Asked what else she did that day, she said she simply attended classes. No grand undertaking to mark the annual nod to the environment? “I don’t think it should be designated as just one day,” she explains. “We should take these steps to help the Earth every day.” ■

Choice of bridal gifts does not register I just flew in from Boston — and boy, are my arms tired (cue laughter). It was a 31-hour whirlwind for the express purpose of attending a bridal shower. The only thing harder than making my 7:40 a.m. flight out of O’Hare was traveling with a gift for the bride-to-be. You see, I pared my weekend needs down to one overnight bag as carry-on luggage, so my gift to the bride had to be compact. It also had to be lightweight and durable enough to survive the overhead bin. It needed to pass TSA inspection, too. Finally, the gift had to be fabulous. I am, after all, the mother of the ring bearer. The first of these requirements eliminated most all of my go-to shower gifts, like the super-fluffy towels that no woman who has been married for longer than five years would ever buy for herself, a crystal vase for the groom to fill with flowers when he needs to apologize, or a bouquet of kitchen utensils that few new brides know what to do with. I have been known to include a set of bamboo toast tongs in such a bouquet (it

was on the registry!), despite my belief that it is a most useless tool. I started my quest for a fabulous gift by browsing the bridal registry but found little to get excited about. Baskets are too bulky, potholders too boring, and corkscrews too lethal for air travel. I asked several friends about their favorite shower gifts and received lots of good advice — but none of it met my travel requirements. Plush bathrobes for the bride and groom sound luxurious. Decorations for every holiday is a really creative gift idea, and the Internet enables you to buy Easter wreaths most any month of the year. Crystal toasting flutes for the wedding reception are sentimental, especially when paired with a dated Waterford Christmas ornament in the shape of the same flutes. It’s a great idea when my most outdoorsy friends registered at REI for camping equipment a few years ago, or my husband’s tailgate buddy requested a meat grinder that I was sure he’d actually use. But this bride and groom were not so bold. I went back to browsing the registry – which was shrinking every day, as other shower attendees quickly gobbled

up the few items in my price range. Some other shower guest beat me to the stainless steel muddler, but I sensed a definite cocktail theme on the register and ran with it. A book of cocktail recipes, monogrammed drink coasters and some cocktail stirrers met all my gifting requirements — and seemed to put a smile on the bride’s face. To this summer’s brides, I urge you to save your guests the stress I suffered: • Set up your registry before the shower invitations are mailed. Guests like me buy gifts as soon as the invitation arrives, and we like to have options. • Register for a lot of items in price ranges to fit a variety of budgets. • Register for untraditional items if they

reflect you as a couple. I was just as happy buying a high-end camping stove as I was a crystal vase. But don’t leave out the traditional items. If you’re inheriting a grandmother’s crystal stemware, register for a water pitcher or ice bucket to match. Not all wedding guests will shop for your camping stove. And please, please send thank you notes promptly. I spent a lot of time picking just the right gift, and I like to be reminded that it was as meaningful for you as I intended it to be. Beguiling ‘Cabaret’ production is music to the ears ■ by jill soderberg

“What good is sitting alone in your room?” sings Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.” “Come hear the music play.” This is good advice, to be sure. For an evening of theatre that is as entertaining as it is disturbing, willkomen to Citadel Theatre’s “Cabaret,” a show featuring an impressive ensemble of leading actors under the direction of Bob Estrin, who is undaunted by the challenge of staging this big show in a small space. The glorious Kander and Ebb songs of the Tony Award-winning musical set in 1930s Berlin are rendered with nuance and surety by every performer in this beguiling production. While Broadway is giving theatergoers in New York a glitzy revival with marquee star power, audiences on the North Shore can fully experience the show’s stirring music and tragic story in this Lake Forest “Cabaret.” With the rise of the Third Reich as the backdrop, the decadent Kit Kat Klub, where “everything is beautiful,” provides hedonistic escape. It is there that a young American writer, Clifford Bradshaw, meets and falls in love with Sally Bowles, a third-rate English nightclub performer. Our guide to the pleasure-seeking is the androgynous master of ceremonies, the Emcee. Dominic Rescigno’s Emcee is more playful than lascivious, which means that even his “Two Ladies,” a song about a ménage à trois (with explicit choreography), is light-hearted fun. But he also delivers the satanic element called for in the role as the Nazi threat rises.

“The glorious Kander and Ebb songs of the Tony Award-winning musical set in 1930s Berlin are rendered with nuance and surety by every performer.” From her first song, the flirtatious “Don’t Tell Mama,” Cassie Johnson as Sally Bowles delivers pizzazz. She is indeed a “Perfectly Marvelous Girl,” as she sings when convincing a reluctant Cliff that she should move into his rooms. But her tour de force is the show’s title song in the second act, when happy romance has again eluded her and she sings “life is a cabaret” with poignancy and power. Sally may be a reckless, opportunistic party girl oblivious to politics, but Johnson gives her a vulnerability and fragility that are at the heart of her appeal. caught in the allure of Sally and Berlin’s debauchery. “It’s skin tightening so tawdry and terrible,” marvels Cliff, “and everyone’s havwrinkle reduction ing such a great time.” But when the first act withreversal “Tomorrow Belongs to sunends damage Me,” the anthemic tribute to German national pride that skin texture rejuvenation becomes a Nazi rallying song, it is clear that the great time is mere illusion. The love affair between the boarding house proprietor Fraulein Schneider, played affectingly by Michelle McKenzie-Voight, and Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit merchant, beautifully sung by Bill Chamberlain, is thwarted by fear of Nazi reprisal. Their songs provide touching and tender counterpoint to the show’s edge, and Fraulein Schneider’s resignation is heartfelt when she says, “I regret everything.”

Time for a renovation? No, not the house.

The large cast includes the Kit Kat Klub boys and girls, whose dancing is spirited and sexy. The racy cabaret costumes are sufficiently louche, and Sally is defiantly showgirl-sassy when she sings “Cabaret” in a sequined and feathered red dress. Further recommending the show is the talented four-piece band on the Citadel stage. Tony winner launches Motown show ■ by gregg shapiro Once in a while, even after you do all the necessary hours of research for an interview, something happens that is a delightful surprise — reminding you how small the world can be. Such was the case when I interviewed Deerfield High alumnus (class of 1980) and Broadway and film producer Kevin McCollum, and discovered the revelation about his talented family members. McCollum, the recipient of four Tony Awards and the man behind groundbreaking shows such as In the Heights, Avenue Q and Rent, launched his latest musical theater production, Motown The Musical, last month. It will run through July 13 at the Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph in Chicago. It is traveling nationally. GS: Kevin, as the producer of Motown The Musical, which is your all-time favorite Motown act? KM: I have to tell you the magnitude of everything that Motown built is overwhelming. I like aspects of almost every act. You really can’t separate the influence of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. If you take those four acts, they each hit specifics that changed the world. The social aspect of Marvin Gaye, as well as the accomplishments of Stevie Wonder with the handicap of being blind and African-American and how he raised certain social issues, such as Martin Luther King’s birthday song that helped establish Martin Luther King Day. Diana Ross helping African-American women to see they can be glamorous and changing the stereotypes of how African-American women were perceived by the media. The young Michael Jackson, he and I are basically the same age, and he inspired me to sing and dance. What makes our show special is that there isn’t one act. If there is an “act,” it’s the act and passion of Berry Gordy creating an environment where so many iconic songs and acts could break through what was then the white media establishment of race music into the music of young America. That’s my favorite act [laughs]; Berry Gordy creating an environment where we could first sing together, then dance together, and begin to understand each other. GS: Motown The Musical probably has a guaranteed audience among the Baby Boom generation, so how do you get younger people in the theater to see the show? KM: Having produced Rent, Avenue Q and In The Heights, I’ve always been able to get young people to the theater. The thing about young people is that they want stories they can relate to. I think what you’re discounting is that they might not have experienced (Motown), but their parents experienced it. All this happened during the time of television, so I think the documentation is there and I think a lot of young people do understand it. On top of that, this music is part of our DNA. It’s part of the songs they hear when they’re buying jeans. P. Diddy and all the artists of today talk about how Motown influenced them. Motown came up at the same time as the Beatles, and young people love the Beatles today. You don’t have to have lived in it to understand the importance, and the fact that these songs are so timeless. That’s what the musical is going to remind people. When you get into the theater, and you hear this music coming across with an orchestra and see these actors living in that

time, it’s like you are there. For young people, especially, who weren’t there, I think it’s even more exciting. Once you see the story unfolding in front you, you’ll understand even more how significant Motown was to what is now our current America. GS: What does it mean to you when you bring a show of yours to your old hometown region? KM: There’s nothing more gratifying. The first time I saw a Broadway show was when I took the car from Deerfield to what is now the Bank of America Theater… GS: …the old Shubert. KM: Yes, and saw A Chorus Line in 1977, I think. I sat in the balcony. A Chorus Line is significant as a road show because it’s the first time they took the Broadway set and replicated it. Here I am, in the business, taking a Broadway show and replicating it across the country. Whether it was Rent, Avenue Q, In The Heights or The Drowsy Chaperone, a lot of my shows have come through Chicago. There isn’t a better town for theater. Chicago is a vibrant town and a smart, interesting diverse audience. Everything I learned about doing shows at Deerfield High School and trying to sell tickets [laughs] for me as the leading player in Pippin – not much has changed in my life. I’m still trying to sell tickets and put on shows. GS: In recent years, shows such as Kinky Boot and The Producers have gone on to great success on Broadway after debuting in Chicago. Sting’s The Last Ship will also be having its pre-Broadway run in Chicago. Do you have plans to premiere any new shows in Chicago? KM: Part of playing in Chicago, because it’s a commercial marketplace like Broadway, is that shows often play Chicago because they know what theater they are going to come to in New York, as well. I definitely have a couple of shows ready and I’m excited about bringing them to Chicago. GS: You are a graduate of University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music. Did you do theater while a student there? KM: Yes, I did musicals there, as well. I was a working actor for a number of years. I got to be around 25, 26 and I was still playing 17 year olds, and I got a little bored [laughs]. I was lucky enough to always work. I was always interested in the business as well so I got my master’s degree in film producing in the Peter Stark (Producing) Program at USC’s School of Cinema in Southern California. GS: You are a recipient of four Tony Awards and you have produced shows that have also garnered awards. What would you say is the key to your theatrical success? KM: The key is passion. I did it because it defines me. I did it because I wanted to tell stories. I love being in the theater. I love sharing stories that were musicalized. Music has always been part of my life. Music was encouraged in District 113. GS: Do you have a place of honor for your Tony Awards? KM: [Laughs] Not really. That’s a good question. I don’t keep them in my office. I keep them in my home. I have two kids, a 13 and 14 year old, and we have room where the printer is and where art projects happen and school work gets done and they (the awards) sit there, sort of like bookends on a couple of shelves. I haven’t put them in a special place because I don’t think I’m done yet [laughs], whether I win awards or not. They’re wonderful to have and it’s wonderful being acknowledged by your peers. ■

D’Andre Carter is the executive chef and partner at Feast & Imbibe, an Evanston-based pop-up and catering company. How did you start cooking? My grandma was the one who was cooking — making cookies, pies, Sunday dinners. I’d go over there on the weekends —it was something that, as I got older, it occurred to me that I loved cooking. What got me cooking was my first job at the Olive Garden. I was 17 or 18, and it was really intense and really challenging to keep up with the older guys. Years cooking? Since I was 17. I’m 33 right now. I started taking it really seriously when I finished cooking school in 2007 — that’s when I started doing more fine dining. What made you decide to become a professional chef? Heather (Bublick, the pop-up’s sommelier/general manager) and I did our internship together and that’s where out friendship started. Two or three years down the road she went to Tru, and I stayed at Moto. After that, I pretty much was ready for a new chapter. So we started doing pop-ups to get the word out about catering, and the pop-ups got pretty popular, so we were stuck in between, doing both pop-ups and catering. It’s kind of sporadic — we also work with other companies in Chicago. We have a pop-up every month or bimonthly. Best recipe tweak? I don’t have all

those extra hands around me — I’ve always had, in a restaurant environment, extra hands and staff. A pop-up is working the entire thing, almost. It’s a one, two-man thing. Signature dish? French black pepper pasta with a Camembert sauce and duck confit with Meyer lemon powder. I shave fresh truffles on top. Favorite cuisine to make? More confident flavors, more modern and upto-date American style. What do you like to eat at home? I like to eat junk food — Chinese food, chicken, pizza. Nothing too challenging. I like to order out. If I make something I’ll make something from breakfast, eggs and bacon, nothing over the edge. Worthwhile gadget? My smoking gun. I have a lot of toys and gadgets. Favorite cookbook? The Flavor Bible. Favorite fruit or vegetable? Celeriac. I like the clean flavor of that. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? The coolest thing that’s happened recently is we served a whole suckling pig at a dinner. I had a sub for the vegetarian. Instead of being turned off from the whole pig, she chose to eat it. Recipe: Green Zebra Gazpacho with an Avocado Salad Soup: Blend 2 1/4 pounds chopped green zebra tomatoes; 1 pound chopped cucumber; 1 chopped shallot; ½ a seeded jalapeño, chopped; 2 garlic cloves; 1 tablespoon honey; ½ cup olive oil; 1/3 cup fresh lime juice; ¼ bunch fresh cilantro; 3 mint leaves; and 2 basil leaves in a blender. Add 1 ½ loaves of white bread cut into pieces and blend until smooth. Add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.

Salad: Cut 1 avocado; ½ pound heirloom tomatoes; ½ cucumber; ½ pound honeydew to about the same small dice and combine. Finely chop 1 bunch cilantro and 1 teaspoon shallot and combine with the fruits. Fold in 1 tablespoon sliced almonds; 1 tablespoon olive oil; and the juice of 2 limes lime. Season with salt to taste. Place small amount of the salad in the middle of the bowl. Spoon the soup around the salad.

Built from Frank Lloyd Wright’s original design in 1915, the Emil Bach house — located at 7415 N. Sheridan Road in Chicago — had undergone a series of owners and renovations in the past century, leaving it no longer true to Wright’s intent. In 2012, Harboe Architects began a restoration process. Now, the Emil Bach house — originally the home of Emil and Anna Bach of the Bach Brick Company — is once again a gem.

“We are striving to provide an urbane and relaxing enclave.” | Wayde Cartwright Unlike the expansiveness of his Prairiestyle houses, Wright’s design of the Emil Bach house is more contained and cubic — yet it still exudes the sense of openness that Wright valued. The first floor — which appears on the exterior to be quite different from the second floor — features inset windows that allow for privacy in the midst of an urban setting. A hidden front door (which is actually found at the side of the house) can be discovered by taking a series of twists down a winding path. Inside, the circular floor plan is laid out around a central fireplace — giving the first floor a distinctively family-friendly feel. Black walnut trim, sunshine yellow paint, and plasterwork in the living and

dining areas are all restored to Wright’s original design. In fact, with the exception of the two modernized kitchen appliances and upstairs bathrooms, everything in the home is designed to appear exactly as it did in 1915. The second floor boasts projected windows (with leaded art glass windows in the master bedroom), which lends an airiness to each of the three bedrooms. As with Wright’s other homes, the Emil Bach home embraces nature, with small balconies off each bedroom, in addition to a screened-in first-floor porch and an openair second-floor porch. In the backyard, an open-walled tea house, built approximately 10 years ago by a previous owner, adds to the home’s charm. Managed by Wayde Cartwright and Bruce Boyd (who also serve as innkeepers at the next-door Lang House Bed & Breakfast, a five-bedroom home built in 1919), the Emil Bach house will host several weddings and tea parties this summer. The house is also available as a vacation rental home. “We are striving to provide an urbane and relaxing enclave,” says Cartwright. “The architecture and the home are the masterpiece, and we are working towards combining comfortable furnishings for relevant use in the modern world.” In addition, every Wednesday from May 7 through Sept. 24 this year, the house will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for public tours given by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. sports@northshoreweekend.com When she moved from Connecticut to Lake Forest nearly four years ago, Sydney Johnston would have liked to have been able to seek immediate comfort through organized soccer. But she had to wait six weeks before playing her favorite sport on Illinois soil. “That was rough,” recalls Johnston, now a captain and multiple-position player on Lake Forest High School’s varsity soccer team. “I was bored at first and I missed my friends. “I wanted to hang out with my friends.” Johnston survived that challenging stretch in her life and is considering a career as a therapist for teens after majoring in psychology at Colgate University. “It was hard for me moving at the time I did,” she says. “I wanted to talk to someone who had gone through what I was experiencing. I wanted to know what I could do to feel better about my situation. “I see friends going through tough times, and I try to help them. I enjoy the opportunities to help anybody who needs it or would like it.” Johnston’s soccer game, meanwhile, is a lot like Johnston: active, versatile, successful. “She plays with a great deal of energy and she’s one of the most positive players we have,” says Scouts soccer coach Ty

Stuckslager, who gets significant production from Johnston at the center-back position or at a slot up top — or at any post in between. “She just … works out there, works so hard,” he adds. “Sydney has developed an outstanding shot. It’s hard to stop the shots she blasts.” Johnston scored twice in Lake Forest’s 10-0 rout of visiting Zion-Benton on May 1. Eight of her teammates each found the back of the net once, and senior captain and goalkeeper Ginnie Revenaugh had a hand in the shutout as the Scouts improved to 8-5-1. Johnston scored her team’s goal in a 1-1 tie with Glenbrook South — a Class 3A sectional semifinalist last spring — in a PepsiCo Showdown match at Olympic Park in Schaumburg on April 19. South’s Titans (14-3-1) captured the Glenbrook Cup in Northbrook on May. 3. “It’s different and it’s fun,” Johnston, a defender for most of her life, says of playing minutes on the other half of the field these days. “But what I like most is the camaraderie of soccer, getting to play with my closest friends. “We win together; we lose together. We’re there to pick each other up.” Johnston does a lot of the lifting — with her spirit. “She gets the team going when we’re down,” says senior defender and DePaul recruit Lucy Edwards, the team’s other tri-captain. “I like looking at her when things are stressful, because she knows how to lighten the mood.

“Sydney,” she adds, “controls things for us when she’s in the back. She’s a valuable all-around player for us, very diverse.” Before returning to the East Coast to begin her life as a college student, Johnston, who might play club soccer at Colgate, will scuba dive in Greece this summer. Two of her previous destinations for dives were off the islands of Fiji and Tahiti. She reads about six books per month, with John Green being one of her favorite authors. The author of young adult fiction wrote “Looking for Alaska” and “The Fault in Our Stars” among other books. “Romantic books hit me … hit me hard,” Johnston says. Back in the swing of things HP’s Lowy looking to cap season on a high note ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com Matt Lowy was locked and loaded. And profoundly patient. The sweet-swinging Highland Park High School senior refused to expand his strike zone during a critical juncture of a tight game on May 3. “I was seeing the ball really well,” said Lowy. “If he threw anything in the zone, I was ready to mash it.” Instead, with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, the left-handed hitting Lowy received nothing even tantalizingly close. Lowy was treated to four pitches widely out of the strike zone from Glenbrook South left-handed reliever Jordan Libman. “A walk (at least) meant a run,” said Lowy. Lowy’s RBI cut GBS’s lead in half, 4-2. But Libman promptly recorded his second K of the inning one batter later to end HP’s rally. The Giants wound up losing the Central Suburban League game 8-2. Pitching carefully to Lowy is just good baseball. And smart at-bats are what you get from him. “He’s such a good left-handed hitter,” said teammate David Hochstadt. “It’s a given that he’s going to hit the ball hard.” Last spring, Lowy was one of HP’s top offensive producers. He hit .344 with a .413 on-base percentage. He scored 16 runs and drove in 11. This spring, Lowy is looking to make up for lost time. The right fielder missed the first eight games of the season recovering from a high ankle sprain — an injury he sustained while playing basketball in a P.E. class. “It definitely slowed me down,” said Lowy. “I came out rusty. And I still feel the ankle pain, but I have to play through it. “I feel like I’m slowly getting my swing back,” he added. “Soon, I will be up to par.” He’s currently hitting .296 with three doubles. His slugging percentage is .481. But, HP head coach Dan Casey is starting to see good things from Lowy. “He started out 0-for-11 or 0-for-12. He was struggling,” the coach said. “But he’s been on a tear of late.” On May 2, Lowy had his best game of the year. He came up with a single, double and triple to just miss the cycle in a 13-0 victory over Maine East. Lowy’s veteran presence is invaluable to the Giants, who are currently 12-7. “He works hard, plays hard,” said Casey. “The other kids on the team really respect him.” Lowy’s demeanor also plays well in the dugout. “He always comes with a lot of energy. He’s always optimistic,” said Hochstadt. “You never see Matt Lowy down.” When it comes to baseball, Lowy has worked at becoming an eternal optimist. Highland Park: First baseman David Hochstadt, who hit his seventh career home run against Glenbrook South on May 3, will play his college baseball for Division III Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. Baseball

Lake Forest: The battle of Lake Forest went to the Scouts. LFHS won both ends of a doubleheader against Lake Forest Academy on May 3. In game one, junior right-hander Mark Turelli tossed a one-hitter in a 3-0 victory. Michael Szeszol went 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs. Matthew Gruenes was credited with two RBIs, while JR Reimer had a double and RBI. In game two, the Scouts beat LFA 13-3 in five innings. Reimer had a single, triple and three RBIs. Cole Digman, Griffin Brennan, Jack Kauss and Gruenes also had two hits each. Robert Kesman and Gruenes drove in two runs each, while Nick Athenson added a double. Luke Gibson and Bryan Bund combined on a five-hitter. On May 2, the Scouts topped Round Lake 13-3 in five innings. Luke Johnson went 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Reimer hit a three-run homer. Charlie Sullivan had three hits and drove in two runs, while Szeszol and Cal Kropke had two hits each. Triples were hit by Sullivan, Johnson and Kropke. Sullivan was the winning pitcher. On April 30, the Scouts dropped a 5-4 decision to Warren despite two hits by Reimer and two RBIs by Brennan. Reimer took the loss, allowing seven hits and three

earned runs. A day earlier, LF edged Warren 5-4. Gruenes led the way with three hits. Bund picked up the win, while Sullivan earned the save.

At the Shoot-Around Boys Basketball

Deerfield: Two seniors, Eric Porter and Stefanos Fasianos, who helped the Warriors to a CSL North championship this past winter, will be playing basketball at the Division I level. Porter, who averaged just under 16 points per game, is a preferred walk-on at Loyola University. Fasianos will play for the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He shot 41 percent from three-point range and averaged 7.1 points per game for the Warriors (17-9). Lake Forest: Cal Miller will play basketball next season at Division III Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. The Tigers finished the season with a 19-10 record. The senior all-conference selection had a solid all-around season for the Scouts (21-7). The 6-foot-4 guard, a defensive stopper, averaged 7.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Loyola: Jack Morrissey, the alltime leading three-point shooter for the Ramblers (331) and ninth best in the IHSA, has accepted a full scholarship to play Division II basketball with Spring Hill College, a private Roman Catholic Jesuit liberal arts school in Mobile, Ala. He made 119 threes this winter and averaged 17.4 points per game. He finished his LA career with 1,340 points.

Loyola: Drago Azanjac has made a verbal commitment to play basketball at North Park University. He was a backup guard for the Ramblers this winter. New Trier: This looks to be a good fit. Ricky Samuelson will take his game to a strong Division III program: Wheaton College. The senior all-conference selection averaged 11 points per game for the Trevians (21-10). The 6-3 wing made 42 three-pointers. New Trier: Jordan Thomas will be a preferred walk-on at Northern Illinois. A four-year varsity player, the 5-11 guard averaged 10.6 points per game this winter to go along with a team-best 98 assists.

Timely hitting Giants soar to second-place finish at league meet ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com The gymnastics team at Highland Park High School picked a good time to come with its seasonbest score. The Giants registered a 140.80 to take runner-up honors in the Central Suburban Conference Meet at Niles West on May 1. And this truly was a team effort. The Giants received solid outings from a number of sources: Dylan Abbott, Mitch Berkowitz, Greg Biagi, Jeff Brewer, Andy Kaufmann, David Robbins and Jon Slavin. Kaufmann was the team’s top all-arounder (4th, 46.10). His best events included floor exercise (5thtie, 8.70), still rings (8th, 7.20), pommel horse (9th, 7.40) and parallel bars (9th-tie, 7.90). Biagi came up with a solid seventh-place finish in

the all-around (45.0). He shined on pommel horse (3rd, 8.30) and parallel bars (3rd, 8.50). Brewer was the other HP performer to finish top 10 in the all-around. He took ninth with a 40.90. His best effort came on rings (6th, 7.60) Robbins also had a top-three finish. He scored a 7.40 on the high bar to tie Glenbrook South’s Jeremy Fine for third place. And he finished in a tie for fourth in the parallel bars (8.40). The pommel horse was a good event for Abbott (6th, 8.10) and Slavin (7th-tie, 7.60). Berkowitz was a top-10 finisher in three events: parallel bars (8th, 8.2), floor (8th-tie, 8.50) and rings (10th, 7.0). Niles West was the runaway meet champ with a 153.15. Niles North was third (136.80). The Giants were scheduled to compete in the Stevenson Sectional on May 8. The state meet will be held at Hinsdale Central on May 16-17. ■

The Giants, who placed fourth in the team standings with 53 points, also had a winning effort from the 4x400 foursome of Kenzie Horberg, Sydney Janitschke, Courtney Bartelstein and Kiera Thorpe. They were clocked 4:08.11. Standout Nyjah Lane placed second (12.22) in the 100 meters to Warren’s sprint sensation Brittny Ellis (12.58). She took fifth in the 200 meters (26.65). Lane also teamed up with Horbert, Thorpe and Bartelstein to take the silver in the 4x100 relay. Savannah Sledd was HP’s top competitor in the field events. She finished third in the shot put (36-9 ½). Lake Forest: Lisa Bennatan came up with an impressive showing at the Lake County Meet on May 1 at Grayslake Central High School. The senior distance ace claimed the 1600-meter title in 5:16.85. She won the race by more than two seconds and her time is just off the state-qualifying standard of 5:14.24. The Scouts, who scored 41 points to share sixth-place with ZionBenton, had a ton of other placers. Lizzy Lynch took third in the long jump (15-4 ¼). The other fieldevent placers were high jumper Diana Mzyk (4th, 5-2) and pole vaulter Mary Rose Donahue (6th). Kelsey Schmidt took fourth in the 3200 meters, while Emma Allen was fifth in the 800 and Olivia Vallone was fifth in the 110 hurdles. Two LF relays placed. Elise Wong, Etta Eckerstrom, Allen and Bennatan took second in the 4x800 (9:58.42), while Katie Bertram, Estee Curry, Haley Click and Katie McCulloch came in fourth in the 4x200 relay (1:50.44).

New Trier: The wins continue to add up for the Trevians (17-2). On April 29, Allison Quigley tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win over Maine South. She had 10 strikeouts. On May 2, in a win over Niles West, Secaras went 3-for-3 with a home run, while Abbey Boyd and Lily Novak had four hits apiece. Catrina Melidones had three hits and five RBIs. sports@northshoreweekend.com For New Trier girls lacrosse goalkeeper Danni LeServe, it was a day at the beach — in chilly temperatures and on turf. The junior, nicknamed “D-money,” came up big in New Trier’s biggest win in years, shining in an 8-7 defeat of visiting and five-time reigning state champion Loyola Academy on April 30. NT (14-0-1) hadn’t downed a Loyola squad since 2008. “Some days [the lacrosse ball] looks like a beach ball, and on others it looks like a peanut,” LeServe said, repeating what Trevians assistant coach/defensive coordinator Kristen Murray has told her.

“I stole that line,” Murray admitted. “Stanford’s coach said that, and I liked it. “Danni,” she added, “saw beach balls tonight.” Her top save came on a free position shot from Ramblers senior standout Maggie Nick at the 3:28 mark of the second half. The stop preserved NT’s 8-7 lead. “It was a sweet win against a great coach [John Dwyer] and a great program,” NT coach Pete Collins said. Trevians senior middie Charlotte McGuire scored two of her three goals in the first five minutes of the second half in Northfield, giving the hosts a 6-4 advantage. “That was the turning point, taking the lead like we did in the second half,” Collins said. “We did a very good job possessing the ball.”

Senior middie Betsey Kvam added two goals for NT. Grace Hemmer, Darby Tingue and Emily Carothers finished with one apiece. Senior attack Delia Snediker paced Loyola’s offense with three goals, one more than freshman Brennan Dwyer’s total. Nick and Kathleen Hulseman scored the Ramblers’ other two goals. “It was a great game,” said John Dwyer, whose crew slipped to 12-5. “I felt [New Trier] had an excellent plan, and they executed it well.” New Trier and Loyola each won a game on May 2. NT (15-0-1) beat visiting Arrowhead High School (Wis.) 9-5, while LA (13-5) defeated Eden Prairie (Minn.) 10-5 at Marquette University. ■

Francke turning into a strong middle-of-the-order hitter for Trevians ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com The baseball gods were smiling on Will Francke the other day. Facing a crafty pitcher in Glenbrook South senior right-hander Mike Lenckos, the New Trier junior designated hitter smoked two pitches into the leftcenter field gap: a run-scoring double and a leadoff double. Then, in his final at-bat, Francke went the other way and blooped a ball into a baseball Bermuda Triangle. His opposite-field popup landed safely on the green grass in between three GBS players — the first baseman, the second baseman and the right fielder — and went for a single, giving him a 3-for-3 stat line. “When you get a hit like that, then you know that the baseball gods are with you,” said New Trier coach Mike Napolean, following his team’s 3-1 setback to the host Titans on May 1. GBS coach Steve Stanicek, a former major leaguer for the Brewers and Phillies, was just happy to hold Mr. Francke to a one-base hit. “That kid was outstanding today,” Stanicek said. “He hit two bombs off Lenckos, and Mike usually doesn’t give up hits like that. “And then he gets a flair to drop in,” the coach added. “That’s baseball. Good for him.” The right-handed hitting Francke, who is batting fifth in the order, has been carrying a red-hot stick for the Trevians (13-8). Following his 3-for-3 outing, the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder was hitting .522 with four doubles and 10 RBIs. Not bad for a kid who had an early morning scare in February. He was rushed to the hospital after waking up at 3 a.m. with an appendicitis attack. “Once he got healthy and in shape, we inserted him into the lineup,” said Napolean. “He played with us last summer (Wilmette Waves Connie Mack team), and we thought he would be a good hitter for us this spring.” On April 19, the ball was jumping off Francke’s bat in a tripleheader against two schools: Prospect and Providence Catholic. In the varsity game against Prospect, he came up with a pinch-hit double. Then after going 3-for-3 in a JV game against Prospect, he got his first varsity start and had two quality at-bats against the No. 1 ranked pitcher in Illinois: Providence right-hander and LSU recruit Jake Godfrey. “You never know when you’re going to get an opportunity,” said Francke. “When you do get a chance, you have to make the best of it.” His ability to hit the ball with authority and shoot the gaps makes Francke an ideal middle-of-theorder guy. “He’s got real good eye-hand coordination,” Napolean said. “And he’s got a real nice hitting technique. A good downward swing.” And he can hit the curve ball. “My teammates used to give me a hard time. Dee Dee brings her ‘A’ game Loyola Academy’s Snediker earns high grades — and raves —for 5-time reigning state champs

sports@northshoreweekend.com For most of her grade-school years, Delia “Dee Dee” Snediker loved playing baseball and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Nothing else mattered in her life when Sammy Sosa, her favorite Cub, stood in a batter’s box. “I grew up playing catch in my back yard and playing hardball against mostly boys,” recalls Snediker, now a senior at Loyola Academy. “My dad [Jim] was my baseball coach for a couple of summers. “I was a 4-foot-4, 65-pound pitcher.” Jim and his wife, also named Delia, sat down with their daughter for a talk when Dee Dee was in the sixth grade. The gist of the chat: Maybe you should try another sport, dear daughter. “It was not a fun conversation,” the younger Delia says. But it led to something wonderful. Snediker turned to lacrosse and has been a starter for perennial power Loyola Academy since her sophomore season. “I knew how phenomenal Loyola’s program was when I started playing lacrosse,” says Snediker, who lived in Glenview for most of her life before moving to Lake Forest last fall. “I loved lacrosse right away. It’s fast-paced, with a lot of running and an emphasis on eye-hand coordination … it’s awesome, such an awesome sport, and I continue to feel a strong connection to it. It’s a mix of soccer, hockey

and basketball. “It’s a lot of fun,” she adds. Her numbers are seriously good this spring for the fivetime reigning state champions (13-5), currently ranked second in Illinois behind New Trier (15-0-1) by laxpower.com. An all-state honorable mention pick in 2013, the 5-foot-8 attack upped her goal total this season to 37 with a threegoal effort in an 8-7 loss to host New Trier on April 30. Her assist total stood at 21. Snediker finished with 40 goals and 25 assists for last year’s state champs. “One of the best sticks we’ve had in a long time,” Ramblers coach John Dwyer says of Snediker, who scored at least three goals in eight of LA’s first 17 games, including a fivegoal, two-assist performance in a 20-2 rout of Stevenson on March 20. “She has excellent control,” he adds. Snediker also has breakaway speed and the kind of onfield vision that has to be seen to be believed. “She’s very creative, an awesome player who gets feeds off fast,” says LA senior attack/middie Gieriet Bowen. “Her low sidearm passes [from both sides] are really good. Her high level of passing — that’s a nice dynamic to have on a team.” In a three-game stretch in five days, beginning with a 20-1 defeat of Lake Forest High School on April 7, Snediker, a University of Denver recruit, poured in a combined seven goals and delivered eights assists. She finished with two goals and three assists in each of LA’s

victories over reigning state runner-up Montini Catholic (April 10) and Edina (Minn.) HS (April 11). “Our team has had a lot of long days practicing up on the hill [at the Munz Athletic Campus in Glenview], with most of that time devoted to stick work,” says Snediker, whose father was a track and field athlete at Loyola Academy. “Coach Dwyer focuses often on that part of the game, and that’s part of the reason he’s been so good at taking athletes from other sports and turning them into lacrosse players. “He’s done such a phenomenal job building the program,” she adds. “It’s a privilege to play for him and his great assistant coaches.” Snediker is thinking about majoring in international studies at Denver, a school with a women’s lax program that has taken a “big jump” since the start of 2012 season, she says. “I’m a history geek,” notes Snediker, who has two older brothers and an older sister. “I’ve always been fascinated with history, especially the events surrounding the start of the United States. In my political science class, we’re learning about Mexico’s government. Before that we learned all about Nigeria’s form of government. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to spend four years in Colorado and balance my time with academics and athletics.” And perhaps a trip or two to Coors Field for a CubsRockies game. You can take a baseball bat out of her hands. But the diehard Cubs fan in Snediker intends to stick around for a while. ■

sports@northshoreweekend.com Senior Noah Gruber has grown as a volleyball player — both literally and figuratively — during his four years at Highland Park. After starting out as a setter on the Giants’ freshman B team, Gruber has emerged as Highland Park’s go-to player as an outside hitter this season. “Part of the reason I probably don’t remember him from freshman year is that I think he was like 5-foot-3, 5-foot4. He was a pudgy little kid,” says first-year Highland Park coach Kyle Muldoon, who coached against Gruber as Deerfield’s freshman B coach in 2011. “Sometimes freshman boys just aren’t mature enough yet. He had his growth spurt and he kind of hit his athletic stride.” Now a 6-foot-2 co-captain, Gruber delivered a team-high 15 kills to lead the Giants to a 19-25, 25-18, 25-20 win over Maine West May 1 for their first Central Suburban League North win, including six kills in the second game to help spark the winners’ rally. “He’s done a great job, he’s been kind of our steady force all throughout the season, so it’s been important and pretty essential for Noah to be on the court as much as possible,” Muldoon says. “He started off on the rightside and moved to the outside to get more sets and get more swings.” Gruber, who started playing volleyball in seventh grade, has enjoyed his career path. “It’s crazy that I started out as freshman B team and then it was just a progression,” Gruber says. “I started out, I was kind of short, I was a late bloomer. Some days (as a freshman, I’d think), ‘I’d love to be on the A team.’ But it was really good on the freshman B because I learned how to be that guy because I was one of the only guys on the team with any volleyball experience. I love the chance that I was able to just do everything. My freshman B coach, Joe Chiodo, it was his first year coaching volleyball, so we grew together, we learned and it was a fun year.” When Gruber’s height sprouted, it enabled him to explore his versatility by playing different positions. He also gained more experience after joining the Chicago Bounce Volleyball Club as a sophomore. “I was lucky because the summer between my freshman and sophomore years I had like a six-inch growth spurt, so I got to redefine my role, got to change from being a setter my freshman year, middle my sophomore year, right side last year and now outside,” Gruber says. “When I define my position, I say I’m an outside, but there are times when I’m doing everything. I start right side, we’re out of system or we’re running a special play and I’ll be hitting out of the middle (or) something out of the back row. And if there’s a broken play, I’m ready to set. So it’s good that I have that experience and exposure to everything. I feel like I can have a more profound impact on the game from (outside hitter), just because I’m that guy, I’m the go-to in the front row.” That’s a role Gruber is relishing as he tries to help Highland Park find more consistency in the second half of the season. The Giants are 8-13 and 1-4 in the CSL North, but as Gruber insists, “We know we can play.” Notable: Highland Park placed sixth with a 2-3 record at the Libertyville Invitational Saturday despite missing two varsity setters and a libero, who were at DECA Nationals. Sophomore setter Ryan Chiou was promoted from the varsity and played well with 112 assists, 17 digs and three aces, while Zach Pollack stepped up at libero to contribute 20 digs and six aces. Gruber led the way with 34 kills and 15 digs, while Ari Hoffman added 32 kills and six blocks, and Jack O’Keefe had 25 kills. Against Maine West, O’Keefe put down 10 kills, and Caleb Goldstein had 34 assists. ■

When Sophie and Jon Twichell yearn to get away, they hop in their car and drive seven hours to Grayling, Mich. Once there, the Lake Bluff couple engages in a variety of activities, including fly-fishing (Jon), birding (Sophie) and paddling canoes or kayaks (both). “We love to quietly float and see what wonders reveal themselves,” Sophie notes. “It might be a muskrat swimming along the bank, a neon blue mayfly landing on the kayak, or a heron silently fishing.” Jon is a big fan of the Au Sable River, which he considers to possess the best fly-fishing in the Midwest. “Nothing beats a day on the river getting up close and personal with a brown and brook trout,” he says. Grayling is home to North America’s rarest songbird, Kirtland’s Warbler. After wintering in the Bahamas, the warbler returns to Michigan each summer. Featuring a bright yellow breast and bobbing tail, “it’s a thrill to see this small bird,” Sophie notes, which once was close to extinction. The Twichells often go hiking at Hartwick Pines State Park, where Sophie loves to look for pileated woodpeckers (a crow-sized woodpecker) and evening grosbeaks. After a great day in nature, they say nothing tops it off like a hamburger at Spike’s Keg O Nails. — David Sweet

Past bad credit, a history of missed bill payments, bankruptcy, foreclosure and divorce can all negatively impact your credit score and stand in the way of loan qualification. Taking on more responsibility for your credit by reducing your debt, creating a budget that you can stick to, paying bills on time, and avoiding new lines of credit can help to improve your credit score, as well as add to your savings. In the wake of the housing market’s recent past, many “credit repair” companies have sprung up, eager to capitalize on citizens who are trying to do the right thing and who are already on shaky ground. Be aware that many such companies are scams—the companies generally charge their clients for the first type of credit repair—finding errors on your credit reports. Though time consuming and oftentimes frustrating, this is a process that the consumer is able to complete independent of any company. No company can assist in the second type of credit repair—only you can adopt better financial habits. Finally, many of these credit repair companies have pending complaints with the Better Business Bureau, resulting from companies taking their client’s money and not resolving the credit repairs in a timely fashion. As with any part of the home buying process, being aware and informed is the first step to arming yourself with the knowledge that will make you a responsible homeowner and a good credit risk for lenders.
