Group forms to Women back Maple entrepreneurs referendum and business

A

citizens group formed to support a referendum for a new Maple School serving students in Northbrook and Glenview is gearing up its campaign.

Voters in Northbrook Glenview School District 30 will decide April 4 whether the district can issue $36.3 million worth of facilities bonds to rebuild Maple and finish lifesafety improvements at Willowbrook and Wescott Elementary Schools.

If approved, the district plans to spend $41.5 million to erect the new building, demolish the old structure and make required life-safety improvements to Wescott and Willowbrook, according to Superintendent Brian Wegley. He said the bonds totaling $36.3 million will pay for the bulk of the project. The remaining

elanie Macwan knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur when she signed up for the business incubator class at Glenbrook South High School.

Macwan did not know she would be the only female in the class of 24.

“It kind of empowered me in a way,” said Macwan. “I needed to show the boys I am serious about this because I’m the only girl in the class.”

Macfadden organized the first Women in Business Breakfast Feb. 9 at Glenbrook South, introducing between 55 and 60 female students to successful women entrepreneurs for a twohour event.

“Business classes in our school are underrepresented by the female population in all our business classes with only one in the incubator class,” said Macfadden. “We did this (breakfast) to show the girls entrepreneurship is a viable option for school as well as a career.”

Joining the students were 15 women from the community who are either entrepreneurs themselves or high ranking corporate executives, according to Macfadden. There was a panel discussion with three entrepreneurs moderated by a fourth— Rana Strellis of Glenview.

The rest of the guests sat at tables with the students to network and share their stories of successes and failures in the business world. Strellis, a Glenview resident and former Baxalta executive, started her own firm last summer—R Vision Consulting. She said she was thrilled when she learned about the in-

Strellis said she wanted to be involved as a coach or mentor helping the students develop their business plans or assisting with a specific area of business.

When Macfadden told her there was only one woman registered, she was happy to try to encourage more in the future.

“I wanted to expose them to

Wegley said if the new Maple is built, there will be no need for capital improvements or maintenance for 30 years. Since the bonds will be retired in 20, there will be 10 years after that to build reserves for future work.

The new building will be built on the existing athletic field and parking lot, according to Wegley.

He said when they are done, the existing building will be demolished with new fields and parking where the school stands now.

If the referendum passes, Wegley said detailed plans will be drawn and bids obtained so construction can start next spring.

The new building will be ready for the 2019-20 school year.

For people who want to see the condition of Maple, Wegley said there will be tours at 1 p.m. Feb. 18, 10 a.m. March 4 and 1 p.m.

One sophomore at the event, Eleni Copetus, said she is already sold on the incubator course. She will be taking it next year. She also liked what she heard from the panelists. She said she was

inspired by two of the women who came to the United States as refugees.

“It was inspiring to hear their stories and how they struggled to succeed,” said Copetus. “It shows us what we can do.”

Rachel Canning, a Glenview resident and founder of RL Canning, Inc., was another panelist. Now in the business of

providing information technology services to companies, she told the students how she got there with little technology background.

Canning said she was working for a company dealing with janitorial services in 1998 when an opportunity came along in information technology from a person she knew. She decided to take the leap.

“I didn’t own a laptop then or have an email address,” said Canning.

Another lesson Canning offered the students from her own experience is there is no such thing as failure, only learning experiences.

“If you don’t have failures you’re not trying hard enough,” said Canning.

Macwan has already learned that lesson in the incubator class.

She said and the rest of her fivemember team are starting a business, which sells T-shirts with designs created by artists.

They have changed the name from Shibes to Canvass Clothing.

“We didn’t think Shibes gave a message,” said Macwan. “If you’re going to sell apparel the name has to be recognizable.”

Macwan has learned another lessen that comes from hard work alongside her peers.

“They treat me like one of them,” Macwan said.

Breakfast pizza is hot at Donati’s traditional pizzas Donati’s makes.

Customers select their crust, cheese, sauce and toppings as they go through the ordering line. The pies are ready in eight to 10 minutes.

“It’s fast-casual,” said Urso.

“The oven blows air at 500 degrees at the pizzas and it allows it to cook in a third of the time (of a traditional oven baked pizza).”

After the breakfast pizzas were a hit with his children, Urso started offering them to his corporate catering clients when they asked for breakfast food items.

These clients range from Waukegan through Deerfield.

“They’ll ask what we can do for them and we always say of course,” said Urso.

If a customer wants something other than pizza or a dish to accompany it, Urso said, Donati’s also serves calzones, wings, salads, wraps, sandwiches and a variety of appetizers.

Though he does not want to say when he will offer his newest idea, he said the next addition to the menu may be a dessert pizza.

“I working with Nutella and fresh fruit,” said Urso. “I’m still playing with it.”

aking his children to his restaurant in the morning before hockey spawned a new item and extended hours for Jeff Urso, the owner of Donati’s Pizza Company in Lake Bluff.

The item is breakfast pizza with hash browns, cheddar cheese and eggs, among other ingredients. It’s served all day starting at 8 a.m. until the eatery closes at 9 p.m.

“I always cook for my three boys on the weekends,” said Urso, a Lake Forest native who now lives in Knollwood. “We came to the restaurant because my wife would kill me if I messed up the kitchen at home. I’d make them breakfast pizza and then we’d go off to hockey.”

Those pizzas Urso cooked for his children were unlike anything he was serving during regular business hours. The twoinch-deep, large deepdish breakfast pizza is topped with hash brown potatoes, cheddar cheese and seven eggs. The sunny-side-up eggs cook and the cheese melts as the pizza goes through the oven. There is also thin crust.

Instead of the tomato sauce used on many of his other pizzas, he offers a choice of hollandaise, country gravy or buffalo sauce for breakfast. Meat and

vegetables are available for an additional cost.

bacon, bacon, onion and green pepper with the hollandaise sauce. If customers want steak and eggs for breakfast, they can get it on a pizza.

“We have a ‘Denver’ - like the omelet with ham and green peppers,” said Urso. “It’s kind of a combination of a quiche or a skillet,” he added comparing his

breakfast pizza to dishes served in the morning at other eateries.

ne day, out of the blue, the teacher of a seventhgrader with special needs called the student’s mother.

What Mr. West told the mother was simple.

What the mother heard was stunning in a good way — and heartfelt.

How the phone conversation

unfolded: “I just called,” Mr. West began, “to tell you your daughter had a great day at school today.”

The teacher heard … silence.

Then he heard sobbing.

“Thank you, Mr. West,” the mother said. “Not one person has ever called me from school with good news about my daughter.”

Kindness (RAK) Day is Feb. 17.

I read Mr. West’s Story — and those of other RAKtivists — at randomactsofkindness.org. I visited the site after receiving an email from Sew4Good founder Allison Cohen. Her month-old group made fabric tissue holders at a “sew-in” held at a church in Evanston on Feb. 11, and was slated to distribute them six days later to homeless

shelters, retirement homes and commuters on railway platforms.

Reality — Reality show The Bachelor bereft of … reality 25 seasons on the ABC network, a few dozen women in formal wear move into a luxury estate and travel the world while in competition for a fiancé. As with any group of 30 women, there are some I want to be friends with and others that I am less fond of (more like actively rooting against). The bachelor is goodlooking, chivalrous, charming, and smooooooooooooooth as silk.

And at times he is as dumb as a box of hammers. It makes for great television.

But it’s not reality. None of these people has career obligations or family responsibilities while each is on the show. They don’t have to pay the bills, do any household chores, or launder the amazing wardrobes they selected for this adventure. It’s a vacuum — and an easy life in which to fall in love. But it doesn’t tell me a whole lot about how these couples will weather the next 40 started watching The Bachelor years.

For this reason — and about again this season. I am not proud, 1,000 more — I don’t like what but I also can’t look away.

You might remember that President Obama and his First Lady got a lot of attention for this as they left the White House last month. Photographers caught his small acts of chivalry and the supportive looks they shared as they greeted their successors. Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton, though they are of a different generation and continent, are often captured in similar moments of kindness and romantic love. It’s sweet to watch.

Both the Obamas and the Windsors made a recent list of seven Hall of Fame Couples published in “The Science of Marriage” special edition of Time. I found this issue at a book store just days after my crisis of conscience — fueled by The Bachelor — and I read with interest what

the staff at Time found to assuage my guilt.

I found it in the introduction: “There’s a reason fairy tales always end in marriage. It’s because no one wants to see what comes after. Meeting the right person, working through comic misunderstandings and overcoming family disapproval to get to the altar — those are the stories worth telling. Plodding on year after year with that same old soul?

But the five other power couples who rounded out the magazine’s list of Hall of Fame Couples kept whole generations engaged in their happiness. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and Stephen and Ayesha Curry have for years made “happily every after” seem pretty darn nice.

Titans leap for joy after earning trophy at state gymnastics meet

B

ebe Haramaras almost looked angry when she landed her Yurchenko pike vault in the preliminary session of the state gymnastics meet last weekend.

The Glenbrook South junior’s eyes were bulging, and her lips were pursed.

Haramaras needed to … celebrate.

Her coach, Steve Gale, stood near the vault and held up both of his hands at Palatine High School on Feb. 17. Haramaras slapped them.

Hard.

Haramaras knew — the rest of the team knew — Glenbrook South had to excel on vault if the team wanted to have any chance at finishing in the top three.

Next up on vault for the Titans was freshman Jenna Hartley.

As Hartley stood at the other end of the runway to wait for the green light from the judges, Haramaras marched the length of the runway to deliver another emphatic double high five.

Hartley threw her vault.

Hartley’s older sister, Hannah, was Glenbrook South’s final vaulter.

“All you now,” Haramaras said.

“All you.”

Hannah Hartley nailed a 9.7.

Jenna’s score: 9.65.

Haramaras’ mark: a seasonhigh 9.475.

The team’s first two vaulters were junior Kylie Kruger and sophomore Sarah Healy.

“When I landed my second vault, I started to cry right away,” Hannah Hartley recalled. “I knew we had done it — done what we had to do. We had huddled before vault, our last event, and we knew what kind of scores we needed.

It’s our strongest event, so we had so much energy going for us at that point in the meet.”

Glenbrook South was in third place — trophy territory — after the prelims. The Titans then protected that showing in the event

bus. One message on a window was, “Regional Champs.”

Another: “Sectional Champs.”

Gale was asked to score his team’s collective ability to adorn a vehicle.

“I’d give them a 9.3.”

Haramaras thought her coach’s assessment was fair and accurate.

“That’s about right,” said Haramaras, who was, without a doubt, Glenbrook South’s best motivator and most vocal leader in 2016-17. “I’d give us a 9.2.

Next year maybe we’ll get that up to a 9.7.

“Maybe we’ll add sparkles to the bus.”

Notable: Glenbrook South state competitor Sarah Healy, a club gymnast before the start of her high school years, chose to do poms as a freshman last winter.

TOTALLY ON HIS GAME Hard training pays off as Purdy turns in a sparkling performance at sectional meet

lenbrook North head boys swim coach Keith Ziemke likes the “gamer” in Ryan Purdy.

The coach likes where Purdy comes from.

“I really like that he’s a swimmer-football player,” said Ziemke.

“I know how to talk to him. We speak the same language. We’re both sons of football coaches.”

But right now, at this very instant, Purdy is not thinking about blocking and tackling.

Right now, it’s the pool over the pigskin.

The GBN sophomore was a smashing success at the GBN Sectional on Feb. 18. He didn’t win a title, but he did win plenty of acclaim.

In helping the Spartans (214 points) to a runner-up finish behind Glenbrook South (289 points), Purdy qualified to this weekend’s state meet at New Trier in three events: 200-yard freestyle relay, 400 free relay and 500 free.

He was more than just “purty” good. He trimmed a sweet 16 seconds off his 500 to place

second behind GBS star Sam Iida.

“I just swam my race,” said Purdy, who was clocked in 4:39.46. “Go hard, go fast and get the state cut. I had no clue that I would be able to have a big drop like that.

“It’s my training,” he added.

“I’ve never trained this hard.”

Ziemke wasn’t surprised to see Purdy deep-six his previous best time.

“We expect big drops,” said the coach. “And when you train hard, you get big drops.

“I want our guys to believe,” Ziemke added. “I want them to go for it. Swim lights out.”

Tapered or not, Iida usually finds a way to blow away the competition. But the GBS standout, who won the 20-lap race in 4:36.50, wasn’t able to shake the tenacious Purdy.

“Sam is the best in the business.

So, whenever he takes off like he does, you can’t feel good about it,” said Ziemke. “But Ryan didn’t let him get away.

“Ryan’s a gamer. A real competitor,” the coach added.

In addition to swimming under the IHSA cut of 4:45.48, Purdy broke Stefan Johnson’s record (4:44.30), which was set in 2013.

His race against time also caused a likable and fully engaged father, Matt Purdy, to break into a smile. But not before he broke into a sweat.

“I was [soaking] in sweat after the race,” said Matt Purdy, current GBN assistant football coach and assistant athletic director and former star left guard at the University of Iowa. “I’ve never been so nervous.”

Matt Purdy, a massive man, gave his son a gargantuan hug after the medal presentation.

Later on, he heaped praise on Ziemke.

“Kirk is the definition of the Pied Piper,” said the elder Purdy.

“I know that my son would run through a brick wall for him. And he’d do it five or six times.”

Ziemke knows how to prepare a team for battle. He’s the son of Terry Ziemke, a former defensive coordinator at Lockport High School. A three-sport athlete

(football, baseball and swimming) for the Porters, he ended up swimming in the Big Ten for the Michigan State Spartans.

Ziemke not only has brought his know-how from one Spartan team to another Spartan team — he’s a whiz with the tapers — but he also has brought kid-like enthusiasm to the deck.

“Sometimes, I feel like an idiot because I get so excited,” he said.

Don’t stop now. His exuberance for the sport is having an effect.

The Spartans advanced swimmers to state in two relays (200 free and 400 free) and four individual events (500 free, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and diving).

“What a day?” said Ziemke.

Especially, what a day after a tough finish in the meet’s opening event. Despite swimming the second fastest time in school history, the foursome of Purdy, Ethan Schonfeld, Zander Johnson and Daniel Kaufman took third and just missed the state cut in the 200 medley relay. They swam a 1:37.35. They needed a 1:37.33.

“We were disappointed that we

missed the cut, but we were not going to let the state [standard] dictate how we felt about ourselves,” Ziemke said. “Every swimmer on that relay had a lifetime best.”

Purdy certainly didn’t let the near miss bog him down. He got better and tougher as the meet went along.

In fact, here’s how you define toughness. Just minutes, fewer than 10, after completing his 500 free race, he jumped right back into the pool to join Kaufman, Fabian JuJescu and Jake Shapiro for heat two of the 200 free relay.

And against tough odds, the GBN quartet met the statequalifying standard with a second-place time of 1:27.65.

“I’m in disbelief that I was able to turn it around that fast,” admitted Purdy, who, by the way, played left guard for the GBN sophomore football team in the fall.

“But I was swimming with a lot of adrenaline. That kept me going.”

Purdy was just impressive, when he swam the second leg of

the 400 free relay with JuJescu, Shapiro and Alec Levin. With the crowd going nuts, the Spartans raced to a second-place finish (3:12.55). GBS was just able to squeeze out a victory (3:12.03).

“That last relay was so much fun,” said Purdy. “All of us had competed in three or four races already. We were dead tired.”

GBN had two champions: Schonfeld in the 100 breaststroke (59.25) and Ryan Cohn in diving (492.65).

Schonfeld’s clocking in the 100 breast broke a school record (59.60), which was set in 1995.

The GBN junior is not your average kid. Schonfeld came up with a perfect score on the ACT test.

“Imagine a kid who can swim like that, compete like that and think like that,” said Ziemke.

“Nothing is standing in the way of this kid.”

Shapiro is another swimmer to watch. Besides advancing in the relays, the sophomore secured a state berth in the 200 free with a second-place time of 1:44.33.

elcome to Somewhereville, Jack Wells.

It’s been awaiting your arrival.

For the most part, the senior has put together a rather quiet career with the swim program at Glenbrook South.

That all changed in a fairly spectacular way at the Glenbrook North Sectional on Feb. 18.

“He might not have come out of nowhere,” said GBS head coach Keith MacDonald. “But pretty close to nowhere.”

After winning the 50-yard freestyle championship and being a member of three winning relays, Wells no longer lives in Nowhere, USA. Or, in any of its suburbs.

“He was not real good as a freshman or sophomore,” MacDonald said. “And he struggled

on varsity last year. Had his ups and downs.

“But this year, he’s been really focused. He’s really matured,” the coach added. “I don’t know, maybe he saw the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”

The 6-foot-3 Wells, who helped the Titans to a first-place team finish (289 points), came up with a significant drop in the 50 free. He churned out a 21.69 clocking after entering the race with a fifth-place seed time of 22.40.

Prior to the sectional, MacDonald red-circled the 50 free.

“Jack is a pure sprinter,” said the GBS coach. “And with the way Jack has looked lately and based on the work that he’s put in all year, the 50 free was a race I was really excited to see today.”

Wells was tapered and ready

to do something exciting. He needed a lifetime best time to slip past Deerfield sophomore David Basin (21.71).

“There’s always something you can do better [in a race],” said Wells, “But I’m happy with it right now. Later today, I’m sure I’ll think of some things that I could’ve done to swim faster.”

Wells, a fifth-place finisher in the 50 (22.65) at the CSL South Meet on Feb. 11, went into the race with an underdog mentality.

He showed no hint of overconfidence.

“I always like to put some doubt in my mind,” he said. “It’s better to be a little surprised [than disappointed] after a race.”

Wells definitely has earned MacDonald’s confidence.

Who should swim the anchor leg of the 400 free relay? With a

deep pool of talented swimmers, the GBS head coach had plenty of options, but he gave the nod to Wells.

It proved to be a good decision to put him in the anchor slot. In a wildly entertaining finish, Wells — teaming up with freshman Elliot Chen, freshman Mike Hadjiivanov and senior Joseph Park — touched the wall (3:12.03) just ahead of Glenbrook North’s Jake Shapiro (3:12.55).

Meanwhile, putting Wells in the other two relays was a nobrainer for MacDonald. Joining forces with senior Sam Iida, sophomore Cameron Schulte and freshman Adam Zuiker, he anchored the 200 medley (1:33.17), which claimed a three-second win over Deerfield.

And, in the 200 free relay, he shared exchanges with Iida,

Zuiker and junior Nick Schechtman to record a winning time of 1:25.53.

For Wells to finally emerge in the pool shouldn’t be a surprise.

Swim talent runs deep in the Wells family.

His two sisters, Niki and Katie, had standout careers at GBS. In 2012, they teamed with 2016 Olympian gold medalist Olivia Smoglia and Bailey Moynihan to set the current IHSA state meet record in the 200 free relay (1:32.98). Katie currently swims in the Big Ten for the University of Iowa.

“Junior year is when I realized that I might be able to do something in this sport. That’s when I decided to get serious about swimming,” said a smiling Jack Wells. “I am [now] considering swimming in college.”

Notable: Jack Wells wasn’t the only four-event winner for GBS. Senior Sam Iida not only was a part of two winning relays, but the Titans superstar also claimed titles in the 200 IM (1:48.81) and 500 free (4:36.50). The team’s other winner was freshman Mike Hadjiivanoc in the 100 backstroke (52.25). GBS’s other state qualifiers include senior Joseph Park in the 100 butterfly (2nd, 51.56) and 200 IM (3rd, 1:55.78); freshman Adam Zuiker in the 100 butterfly (3rd, 51.84); freshman Elliott Chen in the 500 free (3rd, 4:45.19); sophomore Cameron Schulte in the 100 breaststroke (4th, 59.61); and senior Brendan Fontillas in diving (6th, 383.60). … The IHSA state meet will be held at New Trier High School this weekend. The finals are set for Saturday at noon.

“We went to gyms and interviewed fighters, asking them what they wanted for gear, what felt most comfortable to them,” Diamond says. “We were cutting up yoga mats to make crude prototypes. One of our objectives was to introduce a line of shorts [and protective gear] that would allow professional fights to take place without interruptions.

“It took some time and iterations, but we developed our products and started manufacturing them in 2010.”

Diamond, who invested $100,000 in his venture, says his company sales neared $500,000 in 2016.

His favorite testimonial involves a mother of a North Shore son who loves to play hockey but abhors wearing necessary protection during games. The 13-yearold son tried a Diamond MMA creation and stopped abhorring.

“You should have heard how pleased the mother was,” Diamond says. “She told me her son forgot he was wearing our products after a game one day, while walking around a mall for a couple of hours.”

Diamond’s kids occasionally help him box the Diamond MMA products at the company’s headquarters, located on Maria Avenue in Northbrook.

“They’re learning what it takes to be an entrepreneur,” says Diamond, who trains as a jujitsu enthusiast two times a week at New Breed Training Center in Niles. He has a blue belt in the discipline.

“To inspire my kids, I sometimes do push-ups on the kitchen room floor when they’re around,” says the former Glenbrook North Spartans superstar. “I also like to go on bike rides with the kids, fish, play the drums and walk our dog, Lady.”

Diamond takes a bite of his wheat toast.

He then becomes reflective.

“Do you want to know the moral of this story, of my business?” Diamond says. “Stay loyal to your friends from your hometown. I did, and it helped me build a network of connections … of people I grew up with, of people who share some of the passions I have.

“My friend from kindergarten proved to be incredibly helpful to me as an adult.”
