Glenview in a sticky situation

A

sticky, sap-like coating has been frequently spotted on the surfaces of cars, driveways and patios in Glenview this summer, creating a nuisance for local residents. The culprit? An infestation of tiny, brown, turtleshaped insects called lecanium that have been happily feasting on local maple and oak trees.

The problem has become so widespread that the Village of Glenview issued an advisory to homeowners outlining recommended treatment options. But unlike the Emerald Ash Borer beetle, which was first detected in Glenview in 2008 and is responsible for the deaths of nearly 20 million ash trees in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio – and almost all of the Chicago-area’s ash population - lecanium insects will very rarely kill a tree they infest.

Broadway Bound Northbrook 15-year-old wins state’s ‘Best Actress’ accolade

lenbrook North High School rising sophomore Carly Meyer is kicking off her summer with a life experience most teenage actresses dream about. Meyer, who just turned 15, made her Broadway debut when she traveled to New York to represent Illinois on June 26 at The Jimmy Awards, high school musical theater’s version of the Tonys.

Meyer, a resident of Northbrook, won Best Actress at the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) for her portrayal of Hodel in The Glenbrooks’ spring production of Fiddler on the Roof, beating contenders from 75 high schools across the state.

The award was announced in a showcase performance at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place on June 5, where the state’s top 12 Best Actress and Best Actor nominees spent a day auditioning for judges and participating in Broadway in Chicago-sponsored workshops with Chicago actor Jonathan Weir, currently playing Jafar in Disney’s Aladdin, and professional dancer and choreographer Kelly Jacobs.

“The village will not treat parkway trees affected with lecanium scale since most trees can survive the infestation, and over time the scale outbreak will decrease on its own,” the statement reads. “Many treatments that reduce populations of scale insects also reduce populations of beneficial insects that can help keep scale populations under control.”

The website posting describes the insects as “brown, turtleshaped bumps or scales…ranging in size from 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch.” The sticky substance excreted by the lecanium, commonly known as “honeydew,” is a byproduct of the insect’s feeding process, when its needle-shaped stylus inserts into the tree to extract the plant’s juices. Because the insect competes with the tree for available water resources, officials recommend that infected trees be given supplemental water during times of drought.

According to information provided by the village, lecanium scales and other scale insects are always present in the Chicago BROADWAY Cont. from PG 1

area, but their population is typically kept in check by environmental forces and natural predators. This summer, officials say, insect numbers are unusually high.

Jennifer Brennan, horticultural information specialist, manager of education, and head diagnostician at Chalet Nursery in Wilmette, attributed the recent lecanium infestation - more commonly known as “cottony maple scale” because of the cotton-like casing that surrounds the insect’s eggs - to “environmental stressors” like extreme heat and weather fluctuations. These leave trees more susceptible to infection.

“2017 is the third year in a row where we’ve seen temperatures of 95 degrees in the third week of June,” Brennan said. “These high temperatures, combined with the 2012 summer heat wave we experienced, means our plants are really stressed.”

Brennan said the unusual 80degree weather spike the North Shore experienced in March may have also contributed to the widespread lecanium infestation.

“I’m deeply grateful to Broadway in Chicago and the IHSMTA for giving me the chance to travel to New York for this incredible event,” she said. “It’s an amazing opportunity.”

For more severely infected trees, Brennan suggested using a

systemic treatment, such as an insecticide drench, when a recommended chemical solution is mixed with water and poured into the base of tree – known as the “root collar” – where the tree’s trunk attaches to its root system.

The treatment, Brennan said, takes up to 3-6 months to work, but stays in the tree for one full year.

“With systemic treatments, you’re not spraying everything, so there’s not a lot of collateral kill of innocent pollinators,” Brennan pointed out. “The insecticide is not in the nectar and pollen of the tree.”

Brennan said a quicker option would be using a spray stocked by local nurseries, including Chalet, which remains on leaves for up to 30 days. She recommended the spray be applied at dusk when pollinators are back at their hives.

Lecanium scale outbreaks, according to Village of Glenview officials, can recur for a couple of years but naturally decline over time, as does the insect’s sticky “honeydew” when the weather turns colder. In the meantime, WD-40, rubbing alcohol, Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers have all proven effective removal solutions.

From ‘little lobster shack’ to Lucky Fish

fter decades spent owning and operating a local chain of successful cafes and delicatessens all over the North Shore, the family behind the immensely popular Once Upon a Bagel enterprise has launched a bold and beautiful new destination restaurant in downtown Northbrook.

Located in a 100-year-old historic former auto parts store on Shermer Road, Northbrook’s new Lucky Fish restaurant has the atmosphere of a hip, bustling downtown brasserie combined with an inventive menu that fuses fish specialties and East Coast seafood favorites with the piquant flavors of New Orleans and Mexico. A glamorous 18-seat bar, lively open kitchen, and sunny outdoor patio make Lucky Fish a hot new addition to the North Shore summer restaurant scene.

After a four-year successful run with their small Lucky Fish Deli concept on Sheridan Road in Highwood - a casual café tucked discretely behind their popular hot dog joint, The Mean Weiner — owners Shana and Steve Geffen were ready to bring a larger, more elegant version of Lucky Fish to their hometown of Northbrook.

The restaurant’s fish and seafood menu was inspired during a trip taken by the Geffen Family patriarch and Once Upon a Bagel founder, Gerry, to some of the popular summer vacation communities dotting Cape Cod and the coast of Maine.

“My father loved the idea of going into a lobster shack and ordering a fresh lobster roll or shrimp,” said Steve. “He knew there was nothing like that around here, so we opened our version of a little lobster shack up in Highwood. It took off from day one.”

The success of Lucky Fish Highwood convinced Shana to look for a larger location closer to the home she and Steve share with their two busy sons. Luckily, Shana was able to see past 62years worth of dust and oil that covered the empty old Shermer Road auto parts warehouse she stumbled upon.

“With an existing drop ceiling and dividing wall you could not see the beauty of this space,” said Shana. “When we pulled it all away we discovered a 40-foot long skylight and amazing bow truss ceiling no one ever saw.”

C

ountless pictures of cute puppies have been filling my Instagram feed this spring and summer. More than one of my much younger and newly wed friends have

expanded their families by adopting fur babies before a human baby enters their lives.

They might be on to something, as about the same time that I liked an absolutely darling

photo of a black-and-white mutt snuggled into a fluffy down comforter, I spotted a news release about how cute photos of puppies positively impact marriage.

It’s the same reason that carmakers put models next to their new wares at an auto show, and why we have a favorite pair of pants, researchers explained. If every time you wear the pants you also have a fun experience or someone asks if you’ve lost weight while you were wearing those pants, you’d love the pants.

(Heck, I’d buy said pants in every color available.)

Researchers have requested more funding to determine how long this marital halo effect lasts and if the results are amplified when the positive photos are curated for individual tastes.

I’ll admit that puppies are

cute, but puppies are not all peaches and rosebuds. What about the puppy that unzipped a couch cushion and spread the stuffing across the living room while you were out? Or the puppy that grabbed a knife off the kitchen counter and ran circles around the leather couch?

Or the dogs that ate crayons, the box of Godiva goodies and the stale bread meant for stuffing the Thanksgiving turkey?

(These are all real stories posted to my social media pages, and the owners have assured me that neither the dogs nor parts of the leather sofa were harmed by these shenanigans.)

These dog owners might be better served by pictures of delicious food and Disney movies alongside their spouses; pina coladas and getting caught in the rain; or raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Whatever.

Triple threat Kuhn headed to Indiana University after revving up Glenbrook South’ offense

F

or the past three seasons, Carolyn Kuhn served as the ignition switch for the Glenbrook South softball team.

A triple threat at the plate, the energetic and speedy center fielder was that rare find: a true leadoff hitter.

Talk about being a tough out.

Kuhn hit .408 as a junior and .431 this past season.

“Such a fun player to watch,” said GBS head coach Dana Boehmer.

The Indiana University recruit, a two-time all-CSL South selection, constantly found her way onto the base paths.

As a junior, Kuhn scored 30 runs and ended up with a .583 on-base percentage.

As a senior, she had 31 hits to go along with 22 walks to finish the season with an on-base percentage of .568.

“Because of her ability to bunt, slap and hit away (seven doubles, two triples) and because of her speed, we were able to use her in a lot of different facets of the game,” Boehmer said.

Kuhn, a former lacrosse player who also played varsity basketball for the Titans, finished her senior season in solid fashion. She drew at least one walk in her team’s final 11 games. And, in the last 10 games of the season, she fanned only three times.

“She’s a selective hitter, who is real good at fighting off pitches,” stated Boehmer.

Kuhn also executed — and mastered — a fairly unique slaphitting approach during her final campaign with the Titans (1116).

In a Class 4A regional quarterfinal win over Glenbrook North in mid-May, Kuhn would entertainingly leave the batter’s box, hold her bat back and race halfway to the pitcher’s mound after each non-strike.

“The slappers at Indiana were doing that,” said Kuhn, who took in some Hoosiers games prior to GBS’s spring season.

“Slap Hitters Convention” in Bloomington, Indiana, Kuhn was able to watch, learn and replicate.

“I’ve been slap-hitting [for a while],” said Kuhn. “But this year, I mad it an emphasis.

“It helped me not to peel off pitches,” she added. “It also helped me to stay strong up the middle and hit pitches on the outside corner.”

Kuhn’s future function with the Hoosiers, who were 23-31 during the 2017 season, appears to be fairly clear-cut.

“They haven’t told me my role yet — only to keep working hard,” said Kuhn.

“But I think I’ll be used a slap hitter.”

Kuhn perfectly fits the criteria of a slapper. She hits from the

left side, owns a keen eye, possesses good bat control — and runs extremely well.

This past season, Kuhn especially was effective on the base paths. She stole 16 bases in 18 attempts.

“When I’m on the bases, I like to create chaos,” said Kuhn, who plays her club softball with Illinois Chill. “I try to mess with

the defense. I’m always trying to take an extra base.”

Her glove in center field also figures to play in the Big Ten. She made no errors as a junior.

And though she made some uncharacteristic snafus in the spring (6 errors), she consistently made eye-popping catches.

And her arm? It’s top-notch.

She finished the season with five assists.

“She’s rock solid in the outfield,” said Boehmer.

The GBS coach also appreciated Kuhn’s leadership skills. “[Besides being] an amazing player, Carolyn was an awesome leader for us,” Boehmer said.

“She formed a relationship with every player on the team.”

RELUCTANT SUPERSTAR Loyola Academy’s Dwyer shuns spotlight while putting up astounding numbers

W

here in the world do you begin to assess Brennan Dwyer’s impact as a lacrosse player at Loyola Academy?

You could start with the 2017 graduate’s statistics this past spring — with many having reached cartoonish levels, including her draw-control total of 304 (10.1 per game) and her combined 26 goals and seven assists in four playoff games — but numbers don’t have heartbeats, and the four-time US Lacrosse First Team All-American likes to talk about her stats as much as a snowman likes a heat wave in December.

The most futile APB would be one for Dwyer’s ego.

“It’s very unusual, her humility,” said John Dwyer, Brennan’s father and the coach who guided LA (28-2) to its ninth straight Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association (IHSWLA) state championship on June 2. “Brennan has never visited the [ISHLWA] site to see her stats. She’s extremely driven as an athlete, and she’s extremely self-effacing.”

Brennan Dwyer caught the attention of Loyola Academy athletic director Pat Mahoney with something she did after a game in May. She had led the Ramblers to another big win. She had finished answering questions from folks in the media. With most of the spectators and most of her coaches and teammates heading to their cars in the parking lot, the 5-foot-5 Dwyer — a Winnetka resident and one of four captains — walked toward a sideline to take care of something that had nothing to do with lacrosse.

“You stuck around and cleaned the team’s bench area,” Mahoney wrote in a letter that was read aloud at the team’s banquet on June 8. “Nobody told you to do it; it was just the right thing to do, and you did it. That’s a moment I will never forget.

“The best part of all your accomplishments,” he continued, “is that you never lost sight of who you are — you always remained that humble, kind and hardworking young woman who walked through the doors as a freshman in the fall of 2013.”

Before Brennan Dwyer was a fast, highly skilled, unflappable freshman lacrosse player, she was a fast, highly skilled, unflappable

student-athletes on LA’s girls varsity lacrosse team made her feel when she was a freshman. One of the veterans was Maggie Nick, who was named Midwest Player of the Year by US Lacrosse in 2014 and completed her junior season at Stanford University in late April.

Nick considered Dwyer a peer and treated her as if she had been a part of the program for years.

“Maggie,” Dwyer recalled, “was welcoming, so welcoming; every senior was nice to me, and everyone was supportive. It’s what makes [the program] special. Not once did I feel like an outcast.”

Four freshmen made LA’s varsity this past spring. John Dwyer had never kept that many on a team in his tenure at LA, and he did not have to worry about any of them experiencing jitters or a sense that they did not belong.

Mr. Dwyer had Brennan and her convivial classmates in the fold.

“Brennan was embraced by her older teammates in her first three seasons and surrounded by great players all four years,” the father/ coach said. “The older kids were always kind and warm to her, and they gave her opportunities to thrive. Pedal to the ‘Kettle’ kick-starts Colbert’s passion for biking

M

arco Colbert got hooked on biking in his late 40s, and he has the rolling terrain at Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin to thank for it.

Colbert — now 67 years old and the executive director/coowner of the Intelligentsia Cup powered by SRAM (bike racing) Series — remembers when he zoomed down and up, down and up and down and up some more for the first time near Whitewater Lake.

“I was cycling my brains out up there, loving every minute of it, and I felt like I was on a rollercoaster,” recalls Colbert, sitting at an outdoor table at Bluffington’s Café in Lake Bluff on a pleasant June morning.

“I found myself giggling like a kid.”

Colbert has picked the perfect place for breakfast. Cars on Scranton Avenue roll slowly a few feet from our table, where Colbert’s order of coffee, orange juice and Egg Bluffington (one egg, cheddar cheese and bacon on an English muffin) awaits his attention.

“That’s where the finish line will be,” he says, referring to the journey’s end of 15 races at the Sixth Annual Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium (one of 10 stops in this summer’s Intelligentsia Cup Series), to be staged on July 22, beginning at 8:45 a.m.

“Downtown Lake Bluff,” the Lincolnshire resident adds, “will be transformed into an awesome racing venue. The sound you’ll hear, during some of the races, will sound just like the whirring of locusts. It’s a great spectator sport, like NASCAR is — fast and colorful, with thrills and maybe some spills, though we’re hoping to keep the spills to a minimum.”

Colbert, former head of the

legal department at Bank of America in Chicago, has busted three bike helmets in his recreational and competitive racing careers. The first bicycle he ever rode was a Schwinn 5-speed, as a youngster growing up in Champaign. The University of Illinois graduate returned to his alma mater’s streets in his 50s and finished runner-up in his age group at the Urbana Grand Prix.

He pocketed $70 for pedaling his heart out.

“I was working in Chicago when I wanted a new form of exercise,” says Colbert. “On a whim I went to an REI and bought a cheap mountain bike.

Then I rode it on the Des Plaines River Trail. I was exhausted after a couple of miles. Later, I met a couple of guys, one from Libertyville and one from Mundelein. Both had better bikes than I had. Both taught me how to ride a mountain bike the right way.

The owner advised Colbert to arrange a meeting with Lake Bluff Village Administrator Drew Irvin, who — no kidding — had broached the topic with … the bike shop owner.

Irvin dropped the name of a local gogetter, Deb Dintruff, and lauded her civic pride.

Colbert contacted the Lake Bluff resident and president of Lake Bluff ’s Fourth of July committee. Dintruff also spearheads the annual Lake Bluff Block Party.

The pair of organizers pooled their energy and decided the block party and criterium could coexist on the same day in the village with a population of nearly 6,000. Block party goers would likely check out the cyclists; race spectators would likely appreciate the block party’s offerings of food and entertainment.

Win-win.

After serving as an operations manager and assistant manager for professional cycling teams, Colbert completed stints as an assistant race director for the 2010 USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship in Glencoe and the 2011

Evanston Grand Prix.

It was around that time when the wheels — in his head, not on his bike — began to turn rapidly.

“I thought, ‘I could do this myself,’ ” says Colbert. “I also thought, ‘Why not run one of these in Lake County?’ ”

He contacted officials in Libertyville to gauge their interest in providing a setting to showcase bike racers of all levels from dozens of states and more than a handful of countries. They would consider it. The next thing he knew he was in a bike shop in

a community’s streets; I view it as a community event with bike races included. Lake Bluff residents have embraced bike racing since the beginning.

“The feedback I get after every criterium is, ‘We can’t wait for next year’s races.’ ” Colbert bikes three or four times each week, weather permitting. On Tuesdays he normally joins up to eight of his friends for trips to Barrington or Algonquin or Silver Lake in unincorporated McHenry County.

But his wife, JoAnne, likes to drive — off tees on golf courses.

The two met in an astronomy class at the University of Illinois in 1969, when he was a sophomore and she was a freshman.

Their first date was a full day together at Turkey Run State Park in Parke County, Indiana.

They got married in 1976 and lived in Tokyo (1978-79) and in Evanston for several years before moving to Lincolnshire.

“We are addicted to Taiwanese rom-coms,” says Colbert, who also enjoys reading — particularly books about U.S. Presidents by David McCullough — and puttering around in his garage or in his yards.

“I do two things, really. I bike, and I plan the Intelligentsia Cup series.”

He owns seven bikes, including three road bikes. Also in his fleet are two mountain bikes, a track the bike and a time trial bike. One of the road bikes — dubbed “el Marco” — was a first-string cycle for years; it’s now a backup.
