T

he New Trier School Board on April 17 concluded that the controversial Seminar Day was highly positive, but moving forward the school plans to integrate the conversation about race throughout the school year and will consider returning Seminar Day to a previous format of every other year, or every three to four years. “We want to get away from the idea that the only time we talk about race is on a special day,” Superintendent Dr. Linda Yonke said. Seminar Day, with a focus on “Understanding Today’s Struggle for Racial Civil Rights,” was held on February 28 and drew national attention when some parents stood in opposition to the day while others voiced their support. he Vietnam War veteran’s words were haunting: “If you want me to describe a battle I could do that, but it’s not a pleasant thing, especially when you’re a young person and you have bullets flying all around you and rockets and grenades, and you don’t know what’s going on because we were always outnumbered by the enemy,” said Vincent Martorano, a Gurnee resident ,who served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
