Music to Winnetka’s ears

pproximately four percent of boys who become Scouts ever reach the organization’s highest grade—Eagle Scout. For Lake Forest Boy Scout Troop 46 the number is 100 percent for those who will graduate high school this year. All 17 Eagle Scouts from Troop 46 who are part of the Class of 2017 gathered at the Lake Forest Beach June 1 to reminisce about their time in Scouting and talk about their friendship. Richard Walther, Scoutmaster for Troop 46, said the number of young men who become Eagle Scouts is four percent nationally, but it has been higher in Lake Forest. He said 11 Eagles were awarded in 2014 and 13 in 2007. Walther, the parents and Scouts all credit each other for the success, but the common thread from all of them is friendship. uiet Winnetka will be transformed into a hip music hub on June 23 and 24 when the village hosts its first

ever music festival, including a full range of talent by emerging artists. And did we mention that it’s free? “My goal was to bring a lineup with something for everyone — every music taste. It’s meant to be a showcase,” said Val Haller, a Winnetka resident, owner of the music website Valslist.com, and one of the event founders. The Winnetka Music Festival includes popular local acts as well as artists who have toured all over the country. It will kick off on

Friday night with performances by Will Tilson, a teenage blues and soul artist who got his start in Wilmette, and by The Accidentals, an indie-folk-rock band from Traverse City, Michigan. “My main goal is to introduce the newest music to busy adults who don’t have time to find it on their own,” Haller explained. She carefully curated the music festival lineup to include emerging artists from many genres. Indie rock band Wild Belle, which has performed at

Lollapalooza, on The Tonight Show and across the country, will be the closing act of the festival. “I have been to many boutique festivals, and it is a great way to get non-music goers to go see live music,” Haller noted. Haller thinks music festivals are the ideal, casual environments to find your next favorite band. “It’s a way to taste a whole lot of things in a very short amount of time,” she said. And there will be plenty to taste besides the music. Food

trucks will be parked throughout the festival, and craft beer and wine will be available to purchase. The event was the brainchild of Scott Myers, a Winnetka resident, village trustee and organizer of the event. Myers came up with the idea while attending a concert hosted by Haller. As a trustee, Myers had received feedback from residents that they were interested in more community Continued on PG 12
