WINNETKA — fter he was paralyzed in a biking accident and told he would never walk again, Mark Stephan of Winnetka did more than walk. He climbed to top the of the Willis Tower and biked across the United States, raising over $1 million for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), which was instrumental in his progress. Stephan this month is being honored by The Volunteer Center for his contributions to RIC. “When you volunteer it is amazing how much you get back in return,” Stephan said. “It’s not about (me). It’s honoring all of the volunteers at RIC.” Beneath Stephan’s modesty lies the will of an extraordinary person who not only beat the odds but also achieved a life goal of bicycling across the country, despite his physical challenges. Stephan was an avid athlete when a bicycle accident in 2007 changed the course of his life. Before the accident, he ran 18 marathons, completed two Iron Man competitions and cycled regularly. It was during a weekend bike ride that Stephan’s front wheel unexpectedly disengaged and he was capitulated over the handlebars.
