NORTHBROOK — ith the renovation process already underway, AMC Theaters at Northbrook Court cleared its last regulatory hurdle to offer moviegoers a luxury setting that includes drinking more than just soft drinks or bottled water while watching the film.

The Northbrook Village Board of Trustees on August 9 at Village Hall unanimously created a new class of liquor license for the theaters and gave the town’s liquor commissioner the authority to issue it.

The only thing Village President Sandy Frum, who is also Northbrook’s liquor commissioner, has left to do is make sure AMC qualifies for a license. She said she sees no reason why she will not sign it.

A new class of liquor license is necessary because people purchase and consume drinks differently in a theater than at a restaurant or bar, said Robert B. Anderson, an attorney representing AMC. “They’ll be drinking the beverage in their seat,” Anderson said. “They buy it outside the (individual) theater and carry it in where they’re going to watch.

Laughlin said many people were randomly shot to death. Her family survived by hiding: in a bedroom behind a wardrobe, under the mattress, and in the closet.

Laughlin said her father became a member of the armed resistance, and he built a bunker for them on the ground floor of their apartment building. The family moved from their second floor apartment to the ground floor. They dug a tunnel between the their bunker and others for communication, and also a tunnel to get under the wall to the Christian side. All of the bunkers had to have a secret entrance, and should be done within a month when those auditoriums will open and the eight movie houses on the second floor will close for renovation. He said he did not know when all 14 would be complete.

The redone auditoriums will range in size from 43 to 167 seats, according to Lewis’s comments in May. Before the work started, the largest theater had 450 chairs and the smallest had 140.

“They want comfortable seats, healthy food and adult drinks,” Lewis said in May. “They don’t want someone kicking the back of their seat or not being able to see over someone in front of them. We want to bring adults back to the movies. We recognize what we have to do.”

Lewis said in May the company is making the same changes at many of its other movie houses in the Chicago area and across the country.

“Between July and September of 1942, 99 percent of the children disappeared. I was among the one percent of the children. Can you imagine a world without children, or grandparents? Old people and children were the first to be killed.”

According to The Holocaust: A Learning Site for Students, “On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw ghetto uprising began after German troops and police entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. Seven hundred and fifty fighters fought the heavily

armed and well-trained Germans.”

Laughlin explained that tanks with an armored car came into the ghetto along with bomber planes.

“We lifted the trap door and the ceiling crashed down and the walls closed in on me,” She said.

“The Germans marched up our street as the buildings were crumbling down, and we were all so frightened. They loaded us on freight trains that were so packed people were choking. Corpses were on the train with us.”

The train took the sisters and their mother to a labor camp, and from there they were sent to another concentration camp. In total, the family survived three labor camps.

“One night in January 1945, we heard the rumbling of planes, and we said, ‘Could it be?’ We were so isolated. We might as well have been on a different planet,” said Laughlin.

The family was liberated by the Russian Armed Forces. Laughlin said they were covered in lice, and they went from Poland to Czechoslovakia to Germany, and eventually came to New York to join their mother’s two sisters and brother.

The sisters began working in New York, and both graduated from college. Her sister became a professor of comparative literature and Laughlin became a teacher specializing in reading.

“The motivation for us to become the best we could be came

from the darkest place,” said Laughlin. “My father tutored us in the bunker, and my poetic mother said if we survive you’ll see that the Nazi’s children’s children will be asking for generations to come where your conscience was? My mother was not able to adjust, not all survivors are able to adjust, but she was prophetic, because German people are now asking, ‘How could this have happened in our country?’

They are asking and I’m profoundly grateful for it.”

Laughlin said she is also grateful to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum where she volunteers, and she believes the museum will continue to make the world a better place.

“As long as Darfur happened, as long as there are people who say that the Holocaust never happened in some way my father and mother are still with us,” said Laughlin. “History always remembers and we must listen and we must support it.

Laughlin and the Midwest Regional Office of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, based in Highland Park, are preparing for their annual fall luncheon, according to a press release. More than 2,500 people are expected to attend this fundraiser September 14.

The office expects to raise close to $6 million for the D.C. Museum at the event. Since 1989, Illinois residents have raised over $220 million for the museum.

fowl and pasta—have been adjusted and some new ones put on.

“We’ve added a 6 oz. filet,” said Lange. “People want smaller portions. They have less side dishes

and dessert. We also offer a gluten free menu.”

Lange, like all other Morton’s general managers, said he is a sommelier. That is helpful when

there are 19 reds by the glass, a dozen whites and quartet of sparkling wines as well as scores of bottles. Though the selection is vast, Lange said sales are less plentiful.

“We’re not selling as much wine or drinks as we did three or four years ago,” said Lange.

“It’s good for us. We don’t have to worry if they’ve had too much,” he added saying people are learning to police themselves.

Diners may order dessert less often too, but some special meal enders like soufflé must be requested when the main course is selected. Lange said there have been adjustments there too.

“We offer two sizes,” said Lange of the soufflés. “We have an individual size as well as the (traditional) one for two.”

Morton’s has also found ways to cater to families with younger children. Lange said parents can order burgers and other things off the bar menu for their youngsters. Some of the time the kids share, sometimes not.

“We have kids in here who are pretty seasoned diners at 8, 9 and 10,” said Lange.

PASSING THE EYE TEST Having a commanding stage presence — and handling the inherent pressure — critical to a quarterback’s success

B

rett Borre stands in a football huddle, all eyes on him, the Glenbrook South quarterback. His eyes circle the huddle, contacting 10 sets of eyes.

It is moments before the start of his team’s first drive in a game.

“It’s important for team chemistry,” Borre, a senior and a firstyear varsity starter, says of his initial nonverbal connection to teammates before battle. “It also says, ‘We’re in this together, and we’re playing for each other.’ ” The huddle breaks. The 6-foot, 175-pound Borre strolls to the line of scrimmage and surveys the defense, his body language dripping confidence and leadership.

More eyes — from both sidelines, from both sets of bleachers, from the press box — are on him now. Glued. It comes with the turf, this constant focus on The Starting Signal Caller. The firststring quarterback is the rock star with neater hair, the perennial contender for Homecoming King or Prom King, the pitcher who throws strikes to teammates instead of opposing batters.

Cool. QBs ooze cool. In pressure-packed games. Sometimes in the hallways and in the cafeteria at school, too, without even trying.

“You’re the coach on the field,”

Highland Park High School senior quarterback David Adelstein says. “It’s a prominent position; the game is in your hands.”

The 2016 football season commences this weekend. We caught up with six local quarterbacks last week, asking them all kinds of questions about the prominent position and its accompanying glare.

Loyola Academy’s Class 8A state championship season (14-0), because of a transfer rule.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder, blessed with a strong arm, will wear No. 12 for the Ramblers this fall. His favorite professional quarterback, New England’s Tom Brady, wears the same number. “[Brady] stays cool under pressure,” Herion says. “He usually knows what a defense is doing, and he knows how to pick it THE TRANSFER apart.”

A quarterback since he was a Tommy Herion transferred from Notre Dame High School third-grader, Herion, humble and in Niles to Loyola Academy in grateful for his opportunity to Wilmette last year. The senior and guide a formidable LA unit, Chicago (Edison Park) resident would rather talk about any had to sit out the 2015 season, Rambler but himself.

“Our receivers, when they’re in a one-on-one matchup, make us look good,” Herion says. “All I have to do is throw it up there and watch them come down with it.

The quarterback position … I consider it a team-type position, with our coaches doing a good job of coaching me up on schemes.”

Ryan Greene was Notre Dame High School’s starting varsity quarterback when Herion was a freshman. Greene never walked around the campus like he owned it. He projected an approachable image.

“Everybody thought Ryan was a good guy,” Herion says. “People looked up to him, looked at him

as a role model. He said hi to everybody in the hallways.”

Loyola Academy runs a nohuddle offense, meaning Herion’s huddle presence will have to be an on-the-fly presence. It can get frenetic, a no-huddle system. It is up to the system’s quarterback to decelerate his teammate’s heart rates in the heat of battle. Herion is up for serving as a calming influence on the field.

“First and foremost, a quarterback should be a leader, should be there to help everybody out and settle everybody down when necessary,” he says. “All that other stuff [being an instant celebrity, hearing PA announcers announce his name, being the go-to guy for

SPORTS postgame interviews] that comes with being a quarterback … the game, always the game, is more important than anything else.”

says. “Overthrew my receiver.

He took a deep breath, settled down. He executed the second play of his varsity career perfectly, handing the ball to a running back.

Glenbrook North lost that game, 28-14, then won six straight before falling 60-59 (double overtime) to Bradley-Bourbonnais in a stirring playoff opener that was worth the price of admission — times 10. Spartans got used to Burnside, starting quarterback. Spartans looked to Burnside to lead. To make a difference in games. To inspire.

“Kevin likes to take charge in the huddle, man,” Spartans senior wide receiver Tommy Gertner says. “His voice grabs us. He gets everybody’s attention, just like that.”

THE FORMER LINEMAN Charlie Reinkemeyer was too heavy to carry the ball when he played football in the sixth grade.

He was an offensive lineman back then. He slimmed down, grew taller and became a backup quarterback two years later. The starting quarterback suffered an injury.

Reinkemeyer became the starting quarterback.

“I’ve been a quarterback ever since,” says Reinkemeyer, now a 6-foot, 190-pound senior signal caller at Lake Forest High School.

“I think quarterbacks are pretty much the same. They’re pretty nice guys, outgoing, like to be around people, like to lead people, like to get along with people.

“I’m not the starting varsity quarterback yet. There’s more than a week to go before the opener. I don’t want to jinx myself.”

Reinkemeyer backed up Purdue recruit Danny Carollo (LFHS, ’16) last fall, appearing in seven games and passing for 104 yards (8-for-15, one touchdown) and rushing for 26 yards on eight carries (one TD). He, too, admires Brady, a University of Michigan graduate.

A huge Michigan fan, Reinkemeyer attended eight Michigan football games one year. Former LFHS star quarterback Tommy Rees’ first action in a college football game came in the 2010 Michigan-Notre Dame in South Bend. His very first pass as an Irish quarterback, as a true freshman?

“You have to have a short memory as a quarterback, and Tommy did a great job of recovering from that pass,” Reinkemeyer says. “He played well in big games for Notre Dame. You have to think, after a rough play, ‘Next play, next play.’ You have to stay positive.

What’s great about the quarterback position is knowing there’s always that chance, at the end of a close game, to do something positive for your team.

It is early August, the start of high school football training camp imminent. In communities across the country, football-mad or otherwise, one question typically surfaces.

“It’s, ‘Who’s going to be the quarterback this year?’ ” Reinke-

meyer says. “People want to know.

People need to know. Being a quarterback, I take it seriously.

Leadership, definitely leadership, is the trait people want most from a quarterback. Everybody around you is looking at you during games, looking to hear some words of wisdom, looking to see confidence. I try to channel Tom Brady’s mind when I play.

“Years ago, when I was in the fifth or sixth grade, I told my mom [Natalie, a Michigan graduate], ‘I’m going to be a quarterback someday.’ She likes to tell people I said that.”

THE LINEBACKER’S SON Rich Czyzynski played linebacker for Ohio State University football teams in the 1980s. His son, Clay, will be a third-year starting quarterback at New Trier this fall, a legitimate threat to throw for three touchdowns one week and run for three touchdowns one week later.

A spread offense with Clay Czyzynski at the helm is a horror show for defenses and a spectacle for NT fans.

“I sort of gravitated to the position,” Czyzynski, a 5-11, 205pound senior, says. “Played a lot of playground football growing up. It seemed to click, and it’s always been a lot of fun, being the quarterback. I like having the ball in my hands. I like being a playmaker.”

Don’t be surprised if you see a tireless Czyzynski, a former varsity shortstop, chase down footballs as a safety for New Trier this fall.

The son of a former Buckeye weaves his way to classes, just like everybody else does at New Trier.

He admits it’s a glamorous position, quarterback. But the last kind of treatment he wants from his peers, from anybody, is the redcarpet kind.

“I don’t know if there’s that much mystique associated with being a quarterback at my school,” Czyzynski says. “People in the buildings at New Trier see me as a football player, not so much as the quarterback.”

“Being a junior in a mostly senior huddle was tough in the beginning,” the 5-foot-10, 180pound Adelstein admits. “You feel a little out of place. But this year it’s different; I’ve got a comfort level. I try to make the huddle as loose and as calm as I can make it. You want there to be no bickering, no screaming.”

Adelstein was a big kid in seventh grade, a linebacker in his first year of organized football.

Baseball kept him busy in the springs, and the swift right fielder developed a strong arm. When the projected starting quarterback for the sophomore team left HPHS to attend a boarding school in 2014, the coaches looked to Adelstein to run the show.

The varsity rookie took mostly shotgun snaps for the second half of the season last fall, passing for 258 yards (20-for-35, two touchdowns) and gaining 108 yards on only 13 carries (8.3 yard per tote).

“I don’t watch much football on TV,” he admits. “I’d rather watch golf or hockey. THE SUNDAY NIGHT WIDE RECEIVER Glenbrook North senior quarterback Kevin Burnside and his football buddies like to get together on Sunday nights and play touch football. Burnside, a 5-foot10, 170-pounder, prefers catching to throwing on such nights.

“You can’t throw the ball all of the time,” he says.

Burnside entered the game against Evanston Township High School in the third week last season and kept the starting quarterback job for an eventual Class 7A playoff team. He ended up with 1,119 passing yards (nine touchdowns) and 395 more (six TDs) on the ground for an 8-2 squad.

“Footwork is huge,” Burnside, a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) during his freshman year, says of a crucial quarterback trait. “Running in and out of the pocket, trying to make something out of nothing at times, I enjoy that kind of action and the responsibilities that come with being a quarterback.

“Before games, sure, I feel nervous or anxious or excited or a combination of all those feelings.

That’s always a good feeling, no matter which feeling it is.”

He remembers his first play as a varsity quarterback. All QBs do.

Brett Borre — it’s an alliterative name, a quarterback-sounding name (Blake Bortles is the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starting quarterback). It’s a quarterback’s name some screenwriter would use for a character in a football flick.

Borre found himself out of the spotlight for most of Glenbrook South’s varsity season in 2015. He threw five passes and ran the ball two times last fall, cutting-roomfloor stats.

He was a quarterback phenom in his flag football days, beginning in the third grade.

“I killed it that first year,” Borre says. “It was my thing, playing quarterback. I had never been a backup quarterback until last year.”

Borre stood on a sideline on Friday nights last year and made sure he stayed focused, from the opening kickoff to the final play.

A clipboard was a piece of his grid gear each week. A practice wasn’t a practice in his world. It represented another day, another opportunity, to audition his skills.

“Brett pushed and pushed to be the starter last year,” says Titans first-year head coach and Glenbrook South alumnus Dave Schoenwetter, a Titans assistant football coach last fall and a quarterback on Titans teams coached by his father, Bob, in the early 1990s. “His mindset last year was, ‘I should be the starter.’ He didn’t like being the backup, but I think last season prepared him well for this year. He played well in JV games, important to our program.

“I like his mindset this year, his competitiveness. He’s ready.”

“I love days when I operate,” Epstein says. “I consider those fun days. Plastic surgery gives me the license to be creative and perform life-altering procedures.

Six or seven years ago, Epstein wanted more music in his life.

His son, Danny, was taking guitar lessons in Deerfield. Dad signed up for drum lessons in Deerfield.

He purchased a full drum set and housed it in a music room in his basement. The doctor took more lessons. The doctor continued to practice.

“I wasn’t making much progress as a drummer,” says Epstein, who uses strings — tennis strings — to produce different sounds when he has time for another one of his diversions. “I then found School of Rock in Highwood. Things took off for me, though I still have a long way to go.”

Epstein and other Healing the Children team members plan to get on a plane bound for Rivas, Nicaragua, in September. There’s work to be done down there.
