T

he grounds of the Chicago Botanic Garden have been officially set abuzz with excitement for the American Craft Exposition (ACE) this weekend.

Thursday night was the highly anticipated Preview Party, which kicked off the three-day show, beginning today and lasting through Sunday. Over 140 artists, selected by a jury, have prepared for the throngs of craft connoisseurs planning to make their way to Glencoe to enjoy their offerings of ceramics, glass, fashion wearables, jewelry, and other pieces from their oneof-a-kind collections. The threeday event is presented by The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), and will support pharmacogenomContinued on PG 10

L

ynn Braun’s children did not take their mom’s 2012 Parkinson’s diagnosis sitting down. Her daughter Haley Lelah joined her then 57-year-old mom in donning boxing gloves, and they’ve been fighting the disease ever since.

Braun’s three children and two sons-in-law created the Moving for Mom team with about 100 participants to participate in the September 24 National Parkinson Foundation’s (NPF) 5th Annual Moving Day Chicago, a walk for Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement, often including tremors.

The Moving for Mom group is the largest team in the event.

“We told everyone that you don’t have to donate - just come here for support,” said Lynn Braun.

“Our three kids and their husbands live in the city, and they have a lot of friends and our friends and family started coming to the event the first year. We have a big family.

Each year we say come support us, so we can keep our title.”

Lynn Braun said her son, Wes Braun, daughters Jen Miller and Haley Lelah and their husbands, Nate Miller and Josh Lelah, all help out on the committee for the event, which has grown over the years. Lelah serves as team cocaptain with her siblings. She chaired the event last year, but had to step down as she has a new position at her firm.

Lelah has always been in her mom’s corner, and her siblings have followed her lead.

“Our kids are really close, and the other two felt that if it was important to Haley, then it’s important to all three of us,” said Sheldon Braun, Lynn's husband of 39 years. “When Lynn found boxing, our middle child Haley wanted to be part of that too, and Haley and Lynn went to Indianapolis and became certified boxers, I’m kind of in the background, and the kids really are

incredible.”

Sheldon Braun said one of the first things that the neurologist told Lynn after she was diagnosed was to spend her money on a good gym membership. “It’s all about movement,” the doctor told her.

Lynn Braun quickly found out about Rock Steady Boxing, and before she and her daughter joined the Glenview gym, they underwent a weekend of intense training in Indianapolis to become certified boxers.

“It’s like going to student teaching for a weekend,” said Sheldon Braun. “They could open up a studio and have people sign up and teach boxing on a regular basis.”

According to the website, Rock Steady Boxing is “the only boxing program of its kind that teaches the fundamentals of boxing while focusing on overall fitness and well-being for those living with Parkinson’s disease.”

The class is an hour and a half long, with the first half spent doing warm ups, running around the soccer field and stretching exercises that are specific to PD for strengthening fingers and arms. It starts at 1 p.m. and the boxing gloves don’t go on until 2 p.m.

Braun’s doctors at Northwestern fully support the program, as it helps PD patients strengthen their minds and bodies.

The bar, dubbed McGuffins, will sell drinks that people can take to their seats. He said to make sure to remember a driver’s license.

“You have to be 21 and have an ID,” said Noonan. “My 65-year-old father will have to have an ID if he wants to be served.”

Noodle pop-up standing still Torino Ramen to open restaurant in Wilmette

orino Ramen, which pops-up monthly at Hofherr Meat Co. in Northfield, serving diners a savory ramen course, plans to open a new brick-and-mortar location in Wilmette.

Chikako Jo and her partners Tomoko Florida and Chika Asghari conceived of the idea after they couldn’t find authentic ramen anywhere in Chicagoland. “My frustration was that there was no good ramen around here,” Jo told Daily North Shore.

The partners, all of whom grew up in Japan, live in the area with their families and met through their children who were students in Wilmette. Sharing a love of cooking and a view that the area lacked decent ramen options, the women decided to make their own authentic ramen.

Through a friend, Jo was introduced to Sean Hofherr when she was looking for a meat supplier.

Hofherr was familiar with ramen — he worked as a chef prior to opening the meat market — and together they dreamed up the idea of a restaurant that would pop-up monthly at Hofherr Meat. “When we met we just kind of hit it off,” Jo said.

Jo was looking for a venue for the ramen business, while Hofherr envisioned expanding his shop

or sesame. And of course there are the noodles. Torino offers a variety of types, such as curly, straight, thick or wavy.

Next come the toppings which are important. “Toppings turn a simple bowl of noodles into a work of art,” Jo said. Toppings include pork belly, egg, Chinese broccoli or naruto. The entire bowl is then topped with extra seasoning, such as roasted garlic oil, chili oil or pepper.

Husband and wife belt out songs, tighten bond I

the adage that “couples who play together stay together” is true, then Glenview’s Melinda and Ron Harris have it made in the shade. They manage and perform together with the Sing to Live Community Chorus, a group of 85 singers whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.

Melinda Harris founded the chorus shortly after her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2004.

At the time she knew no one else who had faced such a health challenge, and the support groups she joined offered many activities, but none of them musical.

“As a lifetime singer, I knew that music could be so healing in so many ways. This was my opportunity to build something,” she recalled. “It was a great distraction.”

And so the Sing to Live Chorus was born. Melinda Harris

intended it to be low-key — just a chance for people to sing together. But it grew quickly, with singers driving up to an hour to participate.

Sing to Live received 501(c)3 status a year later, Melinda’s cancer went into remission, and she met Ron Harris in 2006. Ron Harris is both a bandleader and the son of a 30-plus-year breast cancer survivor – making him doubly interested in Sing to Live.

“All choruses need men,” Ron Harris said, “and that really opened the door for me to be involved and to sing for Melinda and for my mom. It is a wonderful concept of bringing people together in this kind of group.”

To hear Melinda and Ron Harris speak about their shared hobby and the ways they work together within the larger group of singers made me smile. We

should all have a spouse who speaks of us with such pride.

“It is so meaningful that Ron wanted to do this, and that he was so accepting of me as a survivor,” Melinda Harris began. “I had no idea when I started the chorus that it would lead to this.”

“When we have a concert” Ron Harris continued, “we get to share the accomplishment with each other and everyone in the chorus.

I am so proud of her after every concert, seeing how she works to keep the Board together and pull everything off. It’s different than if we just played golf together or something like that.”

Another couple in the chorus, Gary Page and Lynne Kelley of Arlington Heights, celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary at rehearsal Sept. 13. They attended several of the concerts Ron Harris described before

Kelley joined the chorus in 2011; Page joined soon thereafter. And they enjoy the camaraderie of the couples who sing together.

As for the adage I posed above, Kelley and Page won’t say.

“You are asking a ‘chicken and egg’ question: what is the cause and what is the effect? Do couples who choose to play together stay together, or do couples who stay together choose to play together?” Kelley said. “We don’t know. But we like to do both.”

RUSH TO MAGLOIRE Psyched-up senior brings of an abundance of energy to the Glenbrook South backfield

Y

ou’d think politics would be in his future.

It’s certainly in his heritage (see paragraph 12).

But no, Glenbrook South senior David Magloire is more into psychology. Just ask a baffled Fremd defender.

Magloire, a fun-to-watch, 5-foot-5, 155-pound tailback, has this thing that he likes to do — when he’s in the heat of battling for yards.

He did it against Fremd on Sept. 16.

Instead of rushing back to the huddle after a seven-yard rush, Magloire successfully befuddled an unsuspecting Fremd defender.

“I told him, ‘Hey, nice tackle,’ ” said Magloire, following his team’s hard-to-swallow 24-21 Week Four loss to the visiting Palatine school.

And the tackler’s response?

“He said, ‘Huh?’ I don’t think they hear that very often,” Magloire, a future psych major, added.

“I like trying to get into their heads.”

In the age of trash talking (okay, in the never-ending and continuing age of trash talking), complimenting the opposition is a foreign language.

Enter paragraph two.

Magloire, who runs the ball as fluently as he speaks French (his parents grew up in the Caribbean), is not your average high school football player from the North Shore. Or anywhere else, for that matter. His ancestry can be traced back to Haiti, where his great uncle, Paul Magloire, served as president for six years in the 1950s.

Magloire is a name that translates well.

“It means: My Glory,” he related.

It also could be defined: Full of Energy.

When it comes to vim and vigor, David Magloire is a hoarder.

The likeable and vivacious kid is busting at the seams with liveliness and bounce.

On the football field.

In a postgame interview.

Following this barnburner — Fremd held on to win by coming up with an interception in the end zone with 12.1 seconds left to play — Magloire wasn’t bursting into song. He was not happy. But he

In fact, numbers-wise, GBS’s running game clicked better than Fremd’s. The Titans had 222 rushing yards. The Vikes had 181.

In total yards, GBS led Fremd 338-321. The Titans had 24 first downs compared to Fremd’s 13.

And then, there’s Acocella’s performance. He arguably was Glenbrook South’s Player of the Game.

No. 20 popped out in the second half. His play of the game was ferociously ripping the ball out of the hands of Fremd running back Alec Honickel (24-174) with eight minutes left in the game.

CHOICE PERFORMER Selecting futbol over football proves to be a brilliant decision for Glenbrook South’s Martin

P

hilip Martin was the soccer boy, no older than five. Philip’s father, Scott Martin, was the former state football champion from downstate Mascoutah High School. They often kicked a soccer ball to each other in the front yard of their home in Glenview, the young son working to get better at his favorite sport, the father realizing his son preferred futbol to football.

Philip kicked the ball to Scott.

Scott kicked the ball to Philip.

Back and forth, back and forth.

The father, at some point, must have thought, “Football teams do need kickers.”

Philip Martin was a freshman at Glenbrook South in 2013, late summer. Go out for soccer or go out for football? Martin would have attempted to be wide receiver/ defensive back had he chosen football, the positions his dad, wearing No. 21 on a purple-and-white jersey, played for Mascoutah High School when MHS edged Morris 7-6 for the Class 3A state championship to cap a 13-0 season in 1979.

“I’d been leaning toward soccer all along,” Martin, now a Glenbrook South senior midfielder and Northbrook-based FC-1 club player, recalls. “I’m glad I picked soccer. It still is my favorite sport.

I’m always looking forward to playing it, and I’m always thinking about it at school when we have a game scheduled for that day.

“I am entertaining options to play it in college. I like to be involved in soccer [during matches].

My dad was an involved player in football. He made catches, made some tackles, in that state championship game. I’ve watched film of it.

“My dad and I have traveled downstate to watch state football title games.”

Highland Park High School’s soccer team hit the road for a match at Glenbrook South on Sept. 8.

Highland Park’s Giants would end up wishing Martin had chosen to tackle ball carriers instead of ball dribblers. Martin scored twice and contributed an assist in a 3-0 victory, upping his season totals to three goals and three assists.

“Very hard-nosed, very determined,”Titans soccer coach Seong Ha says of the 5-foot-9, 155-pound Martin, a vital piece of Glenbrook South’s 7-2-3 squad after a junior

season in which he missed a third of the matches because of injury.

“It’s hard for him to crack a smile when he’s playing; he’s always serious out there, always focused.

He never fails to work hard to get back on defense or to create opportunities on offense. I know what I’m getting when Philip plays for us … no drop-off. Never a dropoff.”

Martin played on a tender left ankle against visiting Niles North on Sept. 15, an injury he’d incurred in a match against visiting Glenbrook North on Sept. 10. It forced him to miss a contest against Evanston three days later. He still looked fast and quick and fearless against

Niles North, a 1-0 winner. Late in the second half, as South turned up its sense of urgency and made Niles North Vikings sweat and fret, a Niles North coach shouted, “Hey, watch No. 9!”

Martin wears No. 9. He had still worried the opposing coach, even though his left ankle must have been screaming incessantly at that point of the match.

“I tend to get loud [during matches], especially when we’re not playing well or when we’re trailing a team we should be beating,” Martin admits. “This year we have a chance, a very good chance, to have success. We have work to do, though.”

Martin, generally, is a quiet type, bereft any threat to come across as a rah-rah, look-at-me type. Stats mean little to him. Especially his stats.

“Philip never asks for credit, never wants credit,” Glenbrook South senior defender Grady Bruch says. “He’s a ton for us. If we need a goal, he’s there for us most of the time when the chance is there. He defends hard and attacks hard on offense.

“Quiet guy, great teammate,” Bruch adds. “He’s happiest when the team does well.”

Ha, the Titans’ third-year varsity coach, was the Titans’ freshman ‘A’ coach in ’13, the season Martin

played minutes off the bench. Ha nearly promoted Martin to varsity status in ’14. Martin augmented his game in ’15. His soccer game is better than ever now. Go out for soccer or go out for football? … seems so long ago. Seems like a odd question now.

Good choice, Philip.

“I’ve been really happy with the progress Philip has made as a player through the years,” Ha says. “He’s now a physical player, with a great shot, with no ego. I like the way he goes about his business when he plays, the way he gets things done.

He’s job-like out there, unselfish.”

Bruch scored a goal and fed a pair of assists in Glenbrook South’s 3-0 defeat of host Lake Forest High School on Sept. 17. Senior Will Jones and junior Josh Shin scored the other goals, and senior Damian Pudelko provided the other assists.

State’s Attorney finds true calling

T

he phone call was for Mike Nerheim. It was always for Mike Nerheim. When the Lake County State’s Attorney and Waukegan native played football for St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he and many of his teammates slept at a teammate’s house after a Friday night football game. Not enough beds were available for the gridders, so a floor would have to suffice as a communal mattress.

Early Saturday morning arrived. The phone at the teammate’s house in the pre-cellphone era rang, rang, rang. Nerheim’s father, Waukegan Tire owner Jerry Nerheim, was calling.

Mike, a lineman, stepped over and around sleeping teammates to answer the call. It was the son’s familiar dance in the fall months.

“My dad, on those Saturday mornings, always told me, ‘We need you at the store,’ ” a smiling Nerheim, awaiting his order of eggs over easy and grits at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest, recalls. “He never really needed me. That was his way of making sure I’d return home and not waste my day.

“My dad, he’s 82, and he stills works. He loves being busy. He likes to joke at times, saying, ‘Only working half a day today — 12 hours.’ ” It is a Saturday in 2016, any Saturday. Mike Nerheim, 42 and a resident of Gurnee, no longer needs a call from dad to start his Saturdays in the fall. Maybe his alarm clock these days is the inhouse stirring of one or all of his three children (ages seven to 12).

Nerheim and his wife, Andraea, have two sons and a daughter.

“On Saturdays I look forward to going to work on Monday; that’s how much I love my job,” Nerheim, a Republican running for reelection in November, says.

“It’s the best job I’ve ever had.

This is my pinnacle, this job.

There’s nothing I’d rather do than this. You can’t train for what I do, and I’m still learning, still being challenged. I love being a part of a team (an office of 144 attorneys, in Waukegan), feeling and seeing the energy each day I’m at work.”

Nerheim’s road to his Lake County State’s Attorney office on 18 North County Street began with an essay he had written. He expressed his interest in becoming an FBI agent. The essay landed in the hands of a Sheriff ’s Lieutenant in Kenosha County.

“A lot of people said they wanted to be an FBI agent when I was growing up, but I really wanted to become one,” Nerheim says. “The lieutenant believed in me and arranged for me to spend an afternoon in the FBI office in Mil waukee. I learned the FBI didn’t just need agents; it also needed lawyers and accountants. That led to my legal career.

“I’ve never forgotten what that man did for me,” adds Nerheim, a Winona State University (Minnesota) graduate who earned his Juris Doctor, Cum Laude, from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. “That was an incredibly valuable experience.”

Nerheim’s long memory is part of the reason his office’s “Knowledge is Power” program exists today. With considerable help from his communications manager, Cynthia Vargas, the program allows kids, mostly high school-aged, from a number of Lake County cities and villages to spend a day at the Lake County State’s Attorney Office.

The kids usually arrive at 8 a.m.

They then spend time with judges and attorneys and other employees, learning what this judge does in certain cases, learning what that attorney does to prepare for a certain case.

In mid-August 2016, the number of such saves had grown to 101. Saves … not just a baseball statistic.

“It’s a priority, doing something, anything we can, to address the heroin addiction problem in our communities,”

Nerheim, also a wrestler and a shot putter and a discus thrower at St. Joseph, spent five summers interning at the Lake County State’s Attorney Office, a stretch bridging his high school and college years.

“I did everything,” he remembers. “You know what one of the hardest jobs in the office was back then and still is today? The receptionist’s job. It can be an intimidating experience, a victim or a relative of a victim entering our office and trying to understand the court process. It is up to the receptionist — all of us, really — to make people feel as comfortable as possible. It’s why we have two house dogs [Mitch and Hitch] in our building; they provide a calming presence, ease fears of kids and adults.”

Nerheim has learned a lot about himself since Day One of his State’s Attorney life in late 2012. His skin? It is thicker, a handy shield to help him get through his challenging days.

His management skills? They have evolved.

“I am delegating things to my staff, more than I had years ago,” he says. “I’m letting go and trusting the good people who work for and with me. I try to hire the best people and then get out of the way.”

At home, his get-away-fromit-all spot is the back yard, where he likes to experience peace and fresh air, where he likes to play and connect with his children.

“I like to bike with my kids, do things outdoors with my kids, anything outdoors,” Nerheim says. “I guess I’m old-fashioned.

Call me ‘old-fashioned.’ ” Mike Nerheim’s phone will ring today. And tomorrow. And …

He owns a cell phone.

Old-fashioned?

Not so.
