S
uburbanites searching for good summer theater should pause before buying a train pass or starting on a trafficjammed trek on the Eden’s. The North Shore is home to a sizable list of professional theater companies, some staging as many as two to three summer shows. From the nationally acclaimed, multi-stage Writer’s Theatre in Glencoe, to the small, neighborhood Three Brothers Theatre in Waukegan, there’s a full range of choices. At downtown Glenview’s Oil Lamp Theatre, founder Keith Gerth said it was the local community’s support for the performing arts programs at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools that prompted him to open a 60-seat BYOB theater on the North Shore in 2012. Prior to opening the Oil Lamp, Gerth had been staging “by invitation only” plays at his Lakeview condo in Chicago. After putting

From Market to Table

t’s hard to miss the farm-totable trend in restaurants these days, but how about a farm-totable meal prepared entirely from items purchased at our own North Shore farmers markets? DailyNorthShore sent reporters on assignment to local farmers markets to come up with a delicious meal comprised entirely of farmers markets’ pickings. Farmers markets from Wilmette to Northbrook to Lake Bluff offer a huge variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and meats, as well as prepared foods and baked goods, sufficient to prepare one meal, if not a few others throughout the week. Living in the bread basket certainly has its perks. And lest you think the meals were repetitive, each reporter came up with a distinct menu, drawing on individual inspiration as well as advice from market vendors. Take JWC Media intern Madeline Karnes’ vegetarian meal. A crunchy French baguette at Glencoe’s French Market inspired Karnes to make bruschetta, but she took a unique twist on the dish by adding fresh asparagus,
