Threatening Call Causes School Lockdown BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
S
chools in Winnetka and Wilmette received threatening phone calls on June 7 and 8 that police say are similar to fraudulent calls that have been made to schools across the United States and in the United Kingdom. Wilmette police said the calls were vulgar and implied violent acts. In Winnetka, police said a caller claimed a person with a handgun was outside of Crow Island School. “Literally hundreds of schools have been victimized in school districts throughout the United States as well as the United Kingdom,” Wilmette Police Chief Brian King wrote in a letter to District 39 parents on June 8. ABC News reported schools in Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire Minnesota, Montana, Washington and Wyoming have all reported automated threatening phone calls. North Shore resident sits in a car in a driveway, waiting for the rest of the family to enter the car. The car will soon head to the family’s second home, near a body of water, in Wisconsin. Or in Michigan. Or in Indiana. It is time to escape Illinois. “Your blood pressure goes down, almost immediately, as soon as you start the car,” says Mary Brennan, a realtor and lakefront specialist for @properties in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. “That’s one of the first benefits of owning a second home, feeling less stressful when you get there. You get to leave behind the nine million things that are going on in your hectic life and look forward to spending time with family and friends in a different environment.” Bettye Raglin, an associate broker at Coldwell BankerWinnetka, has been recharging herself at her family’s farmhouse in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for some 30 years. She usually experiences her “Ahhh” moment as soon as the front of her car crosses the Illinois-Wisconsin border. “Life is slower up there, totally different,” Raglin says. At times, along the North

Federal Grant Sought for Pedestrian Underpass BY STEVE SADIN DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
LAKE FOREST – federal grant covering 80 percent of the cost of a pedestrian underpass at the west Lake Forest train station may help lead to an Amtrak stop for the city. The Lake Forest City Council unanimously authorized City Manager Robert Kiely and his staff to seek grants for the underpass and two other projects totaling approximately $13.3 million June 6 at City Hall. If awarded, the city would receive $12 million for the underpass, $700,000 for the Western Avenue streetscape and $630,000 for a multiuse path for bicycles and pedestrians along Highway 60, according to Mike Strong, the assistant to the city manager. He said Lake Forest’s 20 percent share of the cost would be approximately $2.7 million. Strong said application for the grants must be made by June 17

and he anticipates an answer by early winter. The underpass is one of the things Amtrak and the Illinois Department of Transportation want to see before agreeing to the Amtrak stop though it is not a necessity, according statements Mayor made at a March 7 City Council meeting. Schoenheider said he has been making progress in talks for the stop with Amtrak, Metra, IDOT and the office of Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) since March. He said the decision would be a joint one between Amtrak, IDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “Representatives of Amtrak and IDOT are favorable to the stop,” Schoenheider said after the meeting. “The local business community is very responsive,” he added referring to some of the area’s large employers. He said 14 Amtrak trains pass through Lake Forest daily. “Those trains go through at 78 miles per hour,” Schoenheider said. “If we get 12 or 14 of those trains to stop the safety benefits we would get for those four minutes can’t be overstated.” Local businesses in Lake Forest and surrounding communities such as W. Though several methods of building the underpass have been discussed and studied in the past, Strong said this plan calls for boring a tunnel under the tracks so pedestrians can walk through it. The Highway 60 project will provide a path for bicycles and pedestrians along the north side of Highway 60 between Academy Drive and the Interstate 94 on ramp, according to Strong. It will be part of connector links between the Middlefork Savanna and the Des Plaines River Trail. Strong said the grants are available through federal legislation—the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act— enacted in December making $305 billion available through 2020 for projects like this through a competitive process. The projects will be administered through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.

Our approach may appear to be low key- that is by design. The safety and wellbeing of your children are of upmost importance to Superintendent Lechner and me. As a matter of fact we met in the District’s offices shortly after the calls were first received. However, the offender’s goal is to cause disruption to school operations and sow anxiety and fear. Our goal is to maintain a safe environment free from distraction and conducive to a professional learning environment. Wilmette Police Detectives are working with our law enforcement partners to trace the calls
transmitted in a manner meant to hide the origin. Please know that there is no local or credible

New Splash Playground in Winnetka BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
WINNETKA— he splash playground at Hubbard Woods Park opened just in time for the warm weather — and kids of many ages have taken notice of its many amenities, including a “splash pad” that sprays water when self-activated. The project largely stayed on schedule, even with some construction delays caused by cold weather during the winter months. The $2 million dollar upgrade to Hubbard Woods Park includes not only the new playground but also a new pavilion with bathroom facilities, improved pedestrian pathways and enhanced landscaping. Children were cooling off on the splash pad on June 3 while parents watched and enjoyed socializing. Children climbed on

the new spider web and jungle gym equipment, swung on swings and slid down the new slides. Instead of sand — like the previous playground at Hubbard Woods — the new playground features a cushioned surface. Sarah O’Neill of Wilmette watched her four-year-old son splash around in the water. O’Neill said she used to bring her son to the old Hubbard Woods playground, which was located on the other side of the park. She said the new playground is a huge improvement. “I personally love the fact that it has no sand. I love the soft top, the water and the picnic tables,” O’Neill said. She said that they’ve enjoyed picnicking in the park during the evening, while their son plays at the new playground. O’Neill said that having a bathroom is a nice improvement, especially for young children. Sarah Fedronich of Winnetka

was watching her 20-month-old daughter toddle around the playground. “It’s much better. She loves the splash pad,” she said. Indeed, Hubbard Woods Park could become a destination for
North Shore families looking for another way to cool off during the warm summer months. With the opening of Mrs. Green’s Natural Market nearby, and plans for Graeter’s ice-cream shop in
the corner storefront across the street that previously housed a Panera Bread, the debut of this new playground may mark the beginning of a downtown revitalization.

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner CRS, GRI
SELLING YOUR HOME IN A SLOW MARKET In today’s market, Realtors® and sellers are paying more attention to the importance of “thinking outside the box”. The real estate market of the 21st century is challenging and changing at the pace of technology—in other words, at warp speed! Gone are the days of simply popping a “For Sale” sign in the yard, creating an MLS listing and placing an advertisement in the Sunday papers. Though that’s tradition—and those methods of home sale are certainly still necessary and vital— they’re simply not enough to make your home distinct in the real estate market of today. Savvy Realtors® and sellers know that it takes more—much more—to successfully close on a home and maximize on the home’s worth. Today’s buyer is looking for more than just a place to hang their hat—they’re looking for a property that reflects their lives, their values and their lifestyle. It’s as much about where your grill will be during the summer months and what kind of garden you’ll put in come springtime as it is about having four walls and a roof. Home staging is a perfect jumpingoff point. Most buyers can’t imagine themselves in a space while it’s full of the things that make your house a home—so step one in selling, especially in a slow market, is de-cluttering all the spaces and storing all the home decorations that make it look like “yours”. Likewise, keeping the counters clear and the spaces clean and tidy make a world of difference. Next, have a Kodak moment with your house—glossy print magazines, social media and virtual tours are where most home buyers start looking. If they fall in love with a picture of your house, you’ve got a better chance of them making an offer once they see it in person. There’s a number of ways to make the most of a slow market and sell your home for its maximum value—sit down with your Realtor® and start drawing up your plan for success!

LOVE & MARRIAGE
In Defense of Inspirational Quotes
Joanna Brown
I
f you read this space regularly, you’ll recall a short list of great quotes about marriage that I curated a few weeks ago. It was my one-woman rebellion against
the design advice I found online at Elle Décor’s website, an article titled “13 things a woman should never, ever have” in her home. In it, respected designers
warned readers against excessive frills (“it’s not sexy”), cheap bedding (“A refined woman should have nice linens”), and family photos by the bed (“not sexy”). But they also turned their noses up at inspirational quotes, calling them “self-help at a glance…a cry for help under every circumstance.” In drafting my rebuttal, I found one particular quote that especially spoke to me, from an unknown source: “Marriage is not a word, but a sentence.” Readers backed me up, and sent to my inbox a few quotes that I was previously unfamiliar with. Alexis, a Kenilworth business owner, sent this gem from lawyer and Civil War veteran Robert Green Ingersoll: “The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.” And Kathleen, from Lake Forest, called out this quote from children’s author and illustrator Robert McCloskey: “I know that
The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so. —Robert Green Ingersoll you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” But the email that made me
laugh out of loud came from Northfield interior designer Patti Morrell. She’s been married for 40 years, raised four children and (with business partner Melinda Blake) decorated innumerable homes; she wrote with a confidence I dared not debate. “The cornerstone of my work is exactly the opposite of what was cited in Elle. When I begin a job, I seek to see the person, their sense of self and how I can help bring that together with great fabrics, colors and interiors — not the other way around! Quotes, pictures of our loved ones, things we value in life… what else could be more important? You have to start there if the living space is to be authentic. Life does not unfold in a showroom or a magazine; it unfolds in the walls of your home.” Further, Morrell admitted to having quotes taped to her refrigerator, tacked to her bulletin board, and scrawled on her blackboard. Her favorite is from
Margaret Mead: “If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.” Morrell summed up in a subsequent phone conversation why she so vehemently disagreed with the experts online. “People want to feel things, and our culture isn’t set up to do that all the time. Everyone has a story, and your interior should tell that story about you. I love working with couples who start in different corners of a room (design-wise), to bring them together, bring them to consensus. It’s not about ego; it’s about bridging the gap, what’s in your soul, and how can we bring that out in your home, because you want people who come into your home to be surrounded by it.” Contact Joanna Brown at joanna@northshoreweekend.com

Poets Crescendo At Madame Zuzu’s BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
HIGHLAND PARK— ighland Park Poetry celebrated the end of National Poetry Month with tea sipping sonneteers spouting words poetic at Madame Zuzu’s Teahouse. The event featured guest poet Joanna Kurowska, Ph.D., and an array of open-mic participants who shared their poems and short stories. Kurowska has written seven volumes of poetry; five in the United States, and two from her native Poland. She began writing poetry when she was an adolescent. “I feel poetry gives me enough space and freedom to think about life without the constrictions and restrictions of any system of thought or ideology,” she said. “Once I realized I can write poetry in English, it became obvious to me that poetry, and writing at large, was what I wanted to do.” Kurowska said that since five of her books have been published within the last four years, she decided to read poems from each around the following themes: places, dreams, contemporary life or life in general, and some philosophical themes that may be overlapping. She shared poems that described her life in Poland, The Cemetery and A Dream as well as a love poem to her husband called We. Kurowska also read her poignant poem from The Butterfly’s Choice:

In addition to The Butterfly’s Choice, Broadstone Books, 2015, Kurowska has authored Stained Glass, eLectio Publishing, 2016, Intricacies, Finishing Line Press, 2016, Inclusions, Cervena Barva Press, 2014, The Wall and Beyond, eLectio Publishing, 2013, and two books in Poland. “I’m a spiritual person, but I’m also a scholar,” said Kurowska. She taught at Indiana University, Bloomington, and the University of Chicago. Kurowska currently lives in Evanston with her husband and son. Kurowska said Jennifer Dotson, the founder of Highland Park Poetry, invited her to read at The Art Center Highland Park in September of 2014. She also served as one of the judges in the 2015 Poetry Pentathlon. “Highland Park Poetry seems impressively active and I do look forward to becoming more involved,” she said. After Kurowska’s reading, there was a short break where poets and fans indulged in
Madame Zuzu’s global teas, coffee and vegan pastries. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan owns this Ravinia hangout, which features board games on the tables, cases of vinyl records, and nostalgic turntables. The Highland Park Poetry group has been performing there for over a year. Later, emcee/poet Bill Yarrow introduced the open-mic participants. Yarrow, a professor of English at Joliet Junior College, has published many poems in print and online journals. He read a few selections later in the evening. Highland Park resident Marjorie Rissman rediscovered her love of poetry almost five years ago when she read about Highland Park Poetry online after her sister died. “I needed an outlet to vent my emotions,” she said. “I hadn’t written poetry since 1968, and I fell in love with Jennifer.” Rissman remembers being nervous at her first open-mic
night, but she came prepared with poems in hand the following month. Rissman belongs to several poetry groups and describe writing poetry as “more than a hobby. In the last few years I’ve really blossomed in my own words,” she said. “I believe that poetry is not personal, it’s public. I like the feedback, and it’s given me a great outlook.” Rissman said Dotson gives the poets great prompts and presents challenging contests. Rissman received first place in the 2016 April Poetry Challenge for a poem about Shakespeare and modern technology, entitled, To Bill, and has written other poems in East On Central, a Journal of Art and Letters From Highland Park, Illinois. Her open-mic selections included Grateful Grandma and Book Bin. The latter was chosen by the Illinois State Poetry Society as one of the poems to be displayed at Highland Park Library, and other North Shore
libraries. In addition, Book Bin was one of the poems selected to become a bookmark for distribution at the libraries throughout April for National Poetry Month. First-time open-mic participant Sandy Steiner read a poem and a short story about her experience with cancer. She was diagnosed four years ago, and she found inspiration while scuba diving with her family in the Cayman Islands in her poem entitled, Going Deep, No Fear. Though her short story was about loss, afterward she reflected on how much she’s gained. “I wrote in treatment, and a crisis can make you sour or deeper,” said Steiner. Next, Jennifer Dotson read a selection from The Poetry Challenge Sonnet Contest, and an Etheree poem from the Shakespeare Contest. She explained that an Etheree is a multi-syllabic poem where line one is one syllable; line two is two syllables and so on until you get to line 10 for a total of 55 syllables.

Dotson said she looks forward to the 2016 Poetry Pentathlon North Shore Edition at The Art Center of Highland Park. She said the third Pentathlon will feature five events, including an “on the spot prompt leading up to the final round of the evening.” For more information, visit Highlandparkpoetry.org.

KEYS TO SUCCESS Piano-loving Considine caps water polo career at Loyola Academy by winning the prestigious O’Keefe Award BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
T
he polo player is a pianist, too. Mike Considine sits at the piano, ready to perform his favorite piece, Prelude in G minor by Rachmaninoff. Maybe he’s at a recital. Maybe he’s about to play for his longtime teacher, Toni Lutzkanov. The top Loyola Academy Rambler at drawing penalties in the highly physical sport of water polo in the 2016 season is quite adept at tickling … the ivories. He took his first lesson 11 years ago. “It’s pretty powerful,” Considine, a recent LA graduate and a future Northwestern University freshman, says of his favorite piece. “It has a commanding sort of feel. Lots of jumping. It’s fast. It’s technical, with plenty of room for expression.” The polo player is a caddy, too. Considine carries bags for golf members at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette. He usually works four days a week this summer, his fifth as a caddy. Some golfers ask him for club suggestions. Some golfers listen to Mike Considine. “I love talking,” the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, a Wilmette resident, says. “I could talk a golfer’s ears off. I enjoy meeting all kinds of golfers, getting to know them. I enjoy being outside.” Daniel Hengelmann enjoyed deploying Mike Considine in water. A captain for the Ramblers’ swimming and diving team last fall and a polo captain for a sectional semifinalist this past spring, Considine put opposing polo teams in man-down situations time after time after time. When LA was enjoying a power play, Considine was usually the reason. Considine was the constant. “He drew fouls (114, in ’16) at a clip I’d never, ever seen, at least at Loyola,” Hengelmann says of the second-team all-stater (Illinois High School Association and illpolo.com) and IHSA Scholastic Award recipient, an award his older brother, T.J. (LA, ’10, Northwestern, ’14), received

in 2010. “Mike had the methodology down, the way he’d get in the proper position, in the best position to draw a penalty. We went up on New Trier 3-0, or maybe it was 4-0, early in the season, mostly because Mike kept drawing fouls. He put our team in a comfort level at the start of a very big win.” Considine credited the LA polo coaching staff for preparing him well before games. It is not easy, scrumming in the water and keeping a cool head at the same time. Considine still sports scars from polo games, “here and
there,” he says. One mark, along his right hand, is one-and-a-half inches long, artwork produced by an opponent’s fingernail. He probably shrugs at it whenever he looks at it. “I really like the physicality of the sport,” he says. “I’m competitive. There’s not another sport like it. It’s intense and complex. Growing up with older brothers, I wrestled a lot with them at home. There’s wrestling in water polo. You could lose your head. I don’t because I’m pretty mellow, and the polo community is a tight one.
“I’m good friends with many players on other teams.” Considine’s stamina in polo games impressed Hengelmann. Exhausted Hengelmann. Considine could swim and tread and shoot and defend forever, it seemed. “The kid had a motor, from one end of the pool to the other,” Hengelmann says. “He was go, go, go. I got tired just watching him play. He does not have an ‘off ’ switch, and he’s so mentally tough. Special. He was a special player for us.” Hengelmann’s 2014 water
polo team won the program’s first state championship. Mike Considine was a sophomore then, T.J. Considine an assistant coach. T.J. swam and played polo at LA. Mike’s other older brother, Jack (a senior-to-be at the University of Notre Dame), swam and played polo at LA. Older sister Marta (Bucknell junior-to-be) swam and played polo at LA. Little brother Kevin (swimmer, poloist) will be a freshman at LA in the fall. Little brother Charlie is a rising sixth-grader. And a swimmer. Mom and Dad Considine,
Helen and Tom, must have been swimmers and water polo players, right? Not exactly. Tom played soccer. Helen competed in crew. “Their parents,” LA boys and girls swim coach Mike Hengelmann says, “must be doing something right. They’ve raised great kids, all of them. I’ve had the privilege of coaching four Considines. Each set a good example for teammates. Mike, you couldn’t ask for a nicer kid. His attitude was consistent. His effort each day was consistent. He’s the definition of ‘student-athlete.’ “I’d take 100 Mike Considines.” Considine swam in only one sectional meet in his swimming career at LA, last winter. He swam in the 100-yard freestyle. He did not qualify for state, but he lowered his personal-best time in the event by two seconds (to 50.6), a significant drop. The end of his swimming career ended with an exclamation point, not a period. Daniel and Mike Hengelmann, brothers, get together each spring and decide which male Rambler in the swimming and polo programs at LA deserves the O’Keefe Award, recognition for outstanding leadership. It went to a swimmer-polo playerpianist-caddy-good guy this year. “Mike,” Mike Hengelmann says, “was the obvious choice.” The choice likes to praise his siblings, especially the older ones, for helping him become the athlete he is, the person he is. “They’re great people, great role models,” Considine, budding NU engineering major, says. “I look up to them.” Mike Considine looks right at Kevin Considine. He can do that because his little brother is also 6-foot-2. Already. They wrestled each other recently, down in the Considine basement. Good fun, that’s all it was, an older sibling doing what he can to develop the competitiveness of a younger sibling. Furniture survived. So did Mike Considine’s piano fingers.

BOURNE: SUPREME PLAYMAKER Lake Forest High School graduate and soccer star fed most assists in program history BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
P
aige Bourne will always have June 7, 2014. The recent Lake Forest High School graduate kicked a soccer ball on the turf at North Central College in Naperville on that day and instantly became the prep version of Brandi Chastain. You remember Brandi Chastain. She was the United States women’s soccer player who booted the gamewinning penalty shootout kick against China in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in 1999. Unforgettable moment. Lake Forest High School’s girls soccer team and Normal Community West High School’s squad had each scored a goal in regulation in the Class 2A girls state soccer championship final more than two years ago. They played an overtime session. Nobody scored. They played another overtime session. Nobody scored. Penalty kicks would have to break the stalemate. Normal West made its first PK, missed its next two, made its fourth. Lake Forest made its first PK, missed its second, made its next two. Bourne, a sophomore, set up to take the Scouts’ fifth PK. A miss would extend the PK session. A conversion would clinch the first state championship in program history. “I had never seen Paige in a high-pressure situation,” one of Paige’s older brothers, Tyler Bourne (LFHS, ’06), recalls. “She appeared calm.” The ball rocketed off Bourne’s right foot and disrupted twine behind Normal West’s goalkeeper. Goal, no sweat, match. Bourne, arms raised, was no longer calm, screaming jubilantly and turning to start her sprint toward ecstatic teammates. “Paige had the biggest smile going, pure joy, as she joined the girls to celebrate, as the girls fell all over each other,” Scouts soccer coach Ty Stuckslager, smiling at the memory, says. “What a moment, what a scene. There was pressure there, and a sophomore handled it well for us. Every season we keep track of how

many PKs our kids make in practice. Paige was confident every time she took a PK in practice, automatic.” It is May 20, 2016, another memorable day in the soccer career of Purdue Universitybound Paige Bourne, the youngest of Malcolm and Mindy’s five children, the one wearing jersey No. 5 for the Scouts. The 5-foot7 senior midfielder and tri-captain scores a goal in the final minute of the first half of a Class 2A regional final against visiting Lakes Community High School. It breaks a 0-0 match. It also triggers a collective cheer from a pair of young women standing near the fence surrounding the field.
“That’s my sister!” Megan Bourne (LFHS, ’09) and Amanda Bourne (LFHS, ’14), another member of that state title team, shout to passersby and spectators sitting in the stands. “Paige plays with a great sense of poise, even when it’s frantic around her,” Megan, no longer shouting, adds. “In control. She’s good at staying in control.” In the final minute of the second half, Paige makes her sisters proud again, corner-kicking an assist to senior defender Adrian Walker to cap a 2-0 victory. The assist is her 19th of the season, a program-record-tying number. Bourne matches the mark set by … Bourne, Paige Bourne. Her
LFHS career assists total of 61 is No. 1 by a few miles (24 more than the Scouts’ second-leading assist producer) and ranks No. 32 on the Illinois High School Association’s all-time list. Her foot skills are as sharp as her vision is, a dangerous combination for defenders marking forwards in front of Bourne. “I’ve always liked connecting with forwards,” says Bourne, a 2016 All-Sectional selectee and a three-time All-North Suburban Conference player, as well as a corecipient (with Walker) of the 2016 Christopher Quon Scholarship Award for character and integrity on and off the field. Her ninth goal of the ’16 season,
in a playoff match against Wauconda High School on May 24, was the 111th point of her career, No. 2 all-time at LFHS. The program’s premier passer knows what to do with passes, too. The final tally of Bourne’s prep career supplanted quite a luminary in LFHS soccer history, former Stanford University and Canada women’s national team defender Rachel Quon, on the school’s all-time points list. Duke University graduate Nicole Lipp (LFHS, ’08) ranks first all-time, with 155 points, a cartoonish figure. And a bona fide one. Bourne struck a soccer ball for the first time at the age of six. At 12, she and her Lake Forest Soccer
Association teammates won a state championship. Her FC United 16s club team finished third at nationals a couple of summers ago. She played in a Class 2A sectional final in her final prep season. Bourne suits up for a soccer team; success follows. Not a coincidence. She gets to shoot and pass and pop for headers in Big Ten matches next. Purdue’s season opener won’t be too far from Bourne’s home. The Boilermakers, 9-8-1 last fall, visit Loyola University’s Ramblers in Chicago on Aug. 10. “I’m looking forward to the intensity of the Big Ten,” Bourne says. “It’ll be a big step up. I can’t wait to play against such competitive schools.”

KATHERINE THE GRATEFUL Curious Gjertsen dabbles in all kinds of things — and excels on the lacrosse field BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
K
atherine Gjertsen spent two hours watching a YouTube video about how to solve Rubik’s Cube. The New Trier lacrosse attack/middie knows how to play the piano and the guitar and the ukulele. Once, during a road trip with her lacrosse teammates this past spring, she knitted a scarf, solved Rubik’s Cube and sang a Justin Bieber song in Spanish. Not all at once, but only because she has only two hands. The most interesting teen in the world? Katherine Gjertsen, who just completed her junior year. It has to be Katherine Gjertsen. “That song she sang, in Spanish,” lacrosse teammate Darby Tingue recalls, “was amazing. She sang it flawlessly.” She tried her hand and her foot in practically every sport before her first day of classes at New Trier. Soccer and baseball. Softball and figure skating. Basketball and tennis. Dance and lacrosse. Where’s Katherine? Playing something, somewhere. She handled a lacrosse stick for the first time when she was a seventh-grader. It had belonged to the daughter of one of her mother Alexandria’s friends. It felt good in Katherine’s hands. The only day that mattered after her first day as an official lacrosse participant was the day she would be able to call a lacrosse stick her own. She received an early birthday present that same year. “I remember thinking, when I opened that present, ‘This is the greatest thing ever,’ ” Gjertsen, also a 5-foot-8 varsity basketball guard, says. “I loved lacrosse at the beginning. It’s like a combination of soccer and basketball, and there is so much creativity in the sport. There’s no limit on creativity in the sport.” Gjertsen’s lacrosse skills developed quickly, talent and an unwavering desire to hone, hone and hone some more fusing to produce a dangerous player. She played club lacrosse. College
will be other days this summer, plenty of them, when she wants to work on her game. She will ask her father, Ed, to fetch his catcher’s mitt and catch her shots in the back yard. Ed catches his daughter’s fastball. Pop’s mitt makes a pop sound. Ed throws the lax ball to his daughter. Shoot, catch, shoot, catch. Again and again and again. Katherine’s coach for her all girls baseball team, when she was younger? Ed. Her older brother, Andrew (NTHS, ’14), protected nets for New Trier soccer teams. He is a business school student at Indiana University now. Big brother and little sister used to battle each other in sports, notably in one-on-one basketball sessions atop the family’s driveway. Andrew played to win. “He would never let up,” Katherine recalls. “And now I am glad he played that way. I credit him with giving me the competitive edge I have today.” She credits her parents for supporting her love for lacrosse and for transporting her to games and camps and for helping her throughout the college recruiting process. She credits her coaches, high school and club, for their knowledge and patience and encouragement. She credits her teammates for feeding her the ball in games and for being a major part of her assists total. “All of my teammates inspire me,” she says. SPECIAL KK Phelan turns in another highly productive campaign for 18-win Ramblers BY DAN SHALIN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
W
hen recent Loyola Academy graduate KK Phelan was a baby, one of her young neighbors was unable to pronounce her first name, Mary Kate. She called her “Kay Kay.” The name stuck. Until this summer. Working at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, KK has a female co-worker named KK. The coworker has been at the job longer, so Phelan has gone back to Mary Kate, at least at work. What are the chances two girls named KK would end up working at the same summer job? It’s certainly unlikely. Also unlikely, a soccer team losing its scoring leader and allstater to a season-ending injury, only to watch her replacement turn in an all-state season of her own. That’s exactly what KK Phelan did her junior season in 2015 after Iowa-commit Devin Burns missed the campaign with a torn ACL in her left knee. Phelan ended up scoring a team-high 24 goals and adding seven assists and being named to the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) AllState Team. “Her junior year was amazing,” Loyola head coach Craig Snower said about Phelan, who finished her career with 62 goals, ranking No. 3 on Loyola’s career list. “She was kind of expecting to be a role player, and she was thrust into the lead spot. Really everything on offense had to come from her.” Phelan, who had shown flashes of brilliance as a sophomore, said she remembers looking forward to linking up with Burns, a club teammate at FC United, on that 2015 team. However, she and then-newcomer Stephanie Ramsey suddenly found much of the scoring burden on their shoulders. “I was devastated because I was so excited to play with Devin,” said Phelan, who lives in Glenview. “But Stephanie and I were able to do good things
ability Loyola coaches often used as an example of proper technique, the 5-foot-6 Phelan possesses many of the attributes one would want in a forward. “KK was just real good at getting around a defender because she has good ball-control and is really fast and hard to defend her,” said Ramsey, a sophomore. “She also was good at going one-on-one with the keeper and placing the ball right around the keeper and into the corner of the net. It was so much fun to play with KK and Devin, both are amazing players and such good role models.” Though she developed a keen eye for goal, Phelan also was a very unselfish player, according to Snower. The coach and Phelan both said this side of her game developed during her Glenview Titans youth soccer days, when Phelan played alongside Olivia Peters, who went on to become Glenbrook South’s second alltime leading scorer. As fifth graders, the two were part of a team that won the Kick-It 3v3 National Championship at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando. “(Phelan’s) ability to find teammates is good, and part of it comes from her playing with Peters,” Snower said. “Olivia is a goal scorer first and KK became a pass-first player. She learned to set the table for others.” Phelan, by her own admission, also was comfortable deferring to a few Loyola teammates when it came to leadership. With Burns and senior defenders Alex Yasko and Lauren Chrisman serving as the team’s captains, Phelan said she was content to FAB PHELAN: Loyola Academy forward KK Phelan tallied a combined 47 goals in the past two seasons. CIRCLING THE BASES
Five area stars picked in MLB Draft BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
H
ow American (League) of them. Five players from The North Shore Weekend area were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 9-11. And, all five were picked by American League teams: A’s, Blue Jays, Mariners, Orioles and Tigers. The list includes pitcher Ben Brecht, catcher Jason Goldstein, first baseman Charley Gould, pitcher Chris Hall and outfielder Danny Woodrow. Brecht, who just finished his senior season at New Trier, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 36th round. The 6-foot-7 left-hander, who has signed with the University of CaliforniaSanta Barbara, finished the 2016 campaign with a 10-0 record. His earned run average was 0.55. He recently was named the Player of the Year in the Central Suburban League. The Seattle Mariners took Goldstein, a Highland Park High School graduate, in the ninth round (267th player overall). He started 194 games in four seasons at the University of Illinois. The star catcher has been through this process before. The Los Angeles Dodgers picked him in the 17th round of last year’s draft. Despite listing ex-Dodger pitching great Sandy Koufax as his favorite athlete on his bio at Illinois, he decided to play his senior year with the fighting Illini. And … Goldstein, who has earned a degree in industrial engineering, was as good as ever. The 6-foot, 210-pound receiver, a three-time all-Big Ten player, led Illinois in hitting (.312), on-base percentage (.402) and runs batted in (29). For his career, Goldstein ended up hitting .289 with 16 home runs and 115 RBIs. The 267th overall pick has a slot value of $168,900. Gould, who attended Lake Forest High School, was nabbed by the Oakland A’s in the 26th round. The right-handed hitting first baseman just completed a stellar career with William and Mary. The 6-2, 220-pound Gould was a doubles machine this spring. He had 22 two-base hits
hits in the fourth inning, while Mendiola gave up a hit but no runs in the seventh inning. The lefty was helped out by a nice defensive play by GBN first baseman Jordan Kaplan. North’s offense featured a runscoring singles by GBN’s Mitch Schermerhorn and Kyle Mitter. Mendiola singled and scored in the second inning, while HP teammate Justin Mills flew out three times. The South squad received solid mound work from New Trier’s Ryan Acri (2 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits). Offensively, the senior went 2-for-5 with an RBI. NT teammate, D ylan McGuire, had a single and scored twice. Two Glenbrook South players, right-fielder Jordan Libman and first baseman Jack Szafranski, led the South offense. Libman reached base three times on two line-drive singles and a walk. Szafranski had two hits and two RBIs. Dan Jenkins of the Titans had the longest pitching stint in the contest: 3 IP. He allowed one hit and no earned runs to go along with four strikeouts and three walks. THE YOUNG MARINER: Former Highland Park High School star catcher Jason Goldstein, seen here playing for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League last summer, was selected in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners. to go along with five home runs and 46 RBIs. The three-time all-Colonial Athletic Association honoree hit .388 with 15 doubles, 13 homers and 52 RBIs in 2015. He was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy (Best Player in College Baseball). Gould ended up hitting .336 during his time at William and Mary. He had 24 homers, 54 doubles and 150 RBIs. Hall, another New Trier product, was selected in the 14th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was the 432nd player drafted overall. Hall, a converted catcher, was a relief specialist for Elon University this spring. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound right-hander registered 10 saves to go along with a 2-2 record. His earned average was 2.93. He allowed 30 hits in 30. 2/3 innings with 27 Ks and just eight walks.
As a red-shirt sophomore in 2015, while making the transition to the mound, he appeared in 26 games with two saves. He fanned 32 batters in 29 innings. Woodrow, a Loyola Academy grad, was chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the 12th round (355th overall). Woodrow, who is known as Woody, had a terrific spring. The 5-foot-10 fleet-footed outfielder, who was named first-team All-Big East, hit a team-best .343 and stole 32 bases in 39 attempts. The Wilmette native collected 79 hits, 44 runs and 22 RBIs. He also shined defensively, committing no errors in 158 chances for the Bluejays (38-17). At Loyola, the left-handed hitting Woodrow set the school record for longest hitting streak (19) during the 2013 season. Meanwhile, Cal Coughlin, who just finished his senior year at Lake Forest High School, was

ob Zmudka is watching his daughter, Katherine, work on a school project about Hall of Fame football player Jack Youngblood. Katherine is at home, in Winnetka. She is 10 years old. It is the 2015-16 school year, Katherine’s fourth grade. Dad takes a picture of his daughter viewing YouTube videos of Youngblood being interviewed by much older people. Dad texts the picture, with an accompanying text message, to … Jack Youngblood. The former Los Angeles Rams defensive end and Rob Zmudka — an executive for Chicago-based GTAX Corporation, an equipment finance company — are friends. “Guess who’s doing a research project about you?” Zmudka’s text message asks. Youngblood sees the photo, reads the message. The 66-year-old, a pro football player from 1971-1984 for the Rams and only the Rams, replies, “Have her call me if it would help.” Katherine calls Youngblood. She asks him eight questions. One of the questions: “Who was the toughest player you ever faced?” “Jack,” the 48-year-old Rob Zmudka recalls at Avli Estiatorio in Winnetka, “handled the interview like it was an ESPN interview. “I met Jack about 10 years ago, during a golf outing. We hit it off. I knew his era of football, loved
watching football on TV when I was young. I followed the Bears and the Rams when I was growing up [in Elmwood Park]. “Jack, today,” he adds, “is a great spokesman for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.” Rob Zmudka and Jack Youngblood, along with many others without of minute of NFL playing time and 14 other Gold Jackets (living Pro Football Hall of Famers), will tee it up at The Glen Club in Glenview on June 21, Day Two of the 5th Annual Chicago Salute to Greatness. Zmudka, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame National Advisory Committee since 2010, and Mary Owen, Executive Vice President and Life Trustee of The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, are the event’s co-chairs. Wilson, former owner of the Buffalo Bills, died in 2014 at the age of 95; he was Owen’s uncle. Proceeds from the fundraiser (it raised $100,000 last year) go to the Pro Football Hall and Fame and to Highland Parkbased Beyond Sports Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to use the power of sports to transform lives by turning athletic ability into life opportu-
Fame, in Ohio] to new markets, to bring a bit of the museum to other parts of the country,” Zmudka says of the spirit behind the formation of the Pro Football Hall of Fame National Advisory Committee. “I’m just a small piece of this. Really, I am. Our Pro Football Hall of Fame president, David Baker, is a great leader, a great motivator. He is all about celebrating excellence and preserving history. His vision for the Pro Football Hall of Fame is to build a Hall of Fame village i n
nity. “To bring the story of Canton [home of the Pro Football Hall of
Canton. He sees a retirement facility for former players there, a 4-star hotel, a new stadium.
“The NFL celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019,” he adds. “I think Canton would be a great host city for the NFL Draft in 2019.” Richard Dent, an ex-Bear, and Ted Hendricks are among the other Gold Jackets expected to attend the Chicago Salute to Greatness on June 20 (dinner) and June 21 (golf outing). Marv Levy and Dave Casper and Steve Largent, too. The lineup thrills Zmudka, but not as much as what the gathering will do for the Beyond Sports Foundation and its executive director, Kim Michelson. “We’ll be able to use the Pro Football Hall of Fame brand to shine a brighter light on Beyond Sports,” Zmudka says. “That’s exciting. It’s a tremendous organization, and Kim cares deeply about it and its efforts to help student-athletes who are from under-resourced families and interested in attending college.” Zmudka orders for both of us at Avli. It is 11 a.m., too late for breakfast, not too early for lunch. We share pita bread pieces and skordalia (sauce), Greek salad, gigandes (giant baked beans) and kabobs. His wife, Irene, is Greek. They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in September. “I’m a Polish kid who grew up in an Italian neighborhood and married a Greek woman,” Rob says. “There, I covered Europe, right?”

Sit with Zmudka for a half hour and you’d hear, “I feel blessed,” at least four times. Pro Football Hall of Fame board member and assistant treasurer Gary Smith invited Zmudka to Canton 13 years ago, maybe 12. They got to know each other. Smith recommended Zmudka to represent Chicago as a national advisory committee member. Blessed. Zmudka got hired by GATX in 1989 and has never had to search for another job. Blessed. A wife, for a quarter of century. Blessed. A daughter who is funny and sarcastic and has personality traits that remind him of his personality traits. Blessed. “She’s a great, great kid, a remarkable kid,” Zmudka says. “I love spending time with her. I have a fun relationship with her. My wife has two kids — me and our daughter.” Zmudka is listening to his daughter interview Youngblood on a phone. He hears that question, “Who was the toughest player you ever faced?” Zmudka later finds out Youngblood had mentioned more than one player. Youngblood remembered the ferociousness of a couple of offensive linemen, Ron Yary and Dan Dierdorf. He then uttered the name of a running back, a familiar name in these parts, a 5-foot-10, 200pounder in his prime. “Pound for pound,” Youngblood told Katherine, “he was the toughest player I ever played against.” Jack Youngblood played against Walter Payton.
