there has never been a more exciting time to assert the city’s identity as a vibrant place with a proud history, a young and dynamic population and an exciting future.
! As part of our ongoing commitment to
civic pride, 2012 will see the Little Museum of Dublin host a series of unique lectures.
! Our lecture series will be held once a
month in the drawing room of the museum.

James Joyce (1882-1941) Lecture Series 2012

Dublin One Hundred Years Ago To celebrate the choice of ‘Dubliners’ for Dublin: One City, One Book 2012, Catriona Crowe takes us back to the time of James Joyce and offers a series of snapshots of the city at the beginning of the last century. Census forms, photographs, newspaper articles and advertisements bring the period vividly back to life in what promises to be a visually captivating lecture. ! No Sex Please, We’re Irish: Though the politician Oliver J. Flanagan insisted that there was no sex in Ireland before television, Diarmaid Ferriter, author of the acclaimed and ground-breaking book “Occasions Of Sin”, proves otherwise in an eye-opening examination of modern Ireland’s complex attitude towards the birds and the bees. ! A Wander Down the Beaux Walk ‘Dublin can be Heaven, with coffee at eleven and a stroll through Stephen’s Green’ sang Noel Purcell in the 1960s. Desmond McCabe, author of a definitive new history of one of the city’s most beloved public parks, talks about the chequered history of St. Stephen’s Green, from prize-winning ducks to rebel garrisons. Bram Stoker’s Dublin
When Bram Stoker died, one hundred years ago, not a single obituary mentioned his most famous work. Dracula has been translated into more than fifty languages and the Count himself is arguably one of the most frequently portrayed fictional characters in cinematic history. Celebrated historian Roy Foster revisits the Dublin of Stoker’s youth and reconsiders Dracula; one of the most popular books ever written by an Irishman.

William Rowan Hamilton: the ‘Einstein of Ireland’ In association with Dublin City of Science 2012, historian, author and tour-guide Pat Liddy celebrates the great Dublin thinker William Rowan Hamilton, without whose mathematical innovations, computer graphics, animated films and 3-D would not have been possible. ! Lost And Found In a richly illustrated lecture, the art auctioneer Ian Whyte and the artist, writer and conservationist Peter Pearson discuss the ephemera Dubliners past and present have collected. Peter Pearson will reveal the story behind many of the extraordinary artefacts that are now on show in the Little Museum, while Ian Whyte gives us the insider scoop on what’s worth keeping, and what to throw away. Schrödinger in Dublin
Erwin Schrödinger, the Nobel Prize winning scientist, best known for his famous cat, came to Dublin in October 1940 at the personal invitation of Éamon de Valera. In association with Dublin City Of Science 2012, entertaining poet and physicist Iggy McGovern discusses the legacy of Schrödinger’s seventeen-year stay.

Nothing To Say: Mannix Flynn’s Dublin A celebrated artist, performer and writer, Mannix Flynn is also an independent Dublin City Councillor for the South-East Area, where his probing analysis of Irish society has found a new platform. In this lecture, Councillor Flynn reflects on his remarkable journey over the last four decades. ! Orson Welles: Star of the Dublin Stage “Orson Welles, star of the New York Theatre Guild, would consider appearing in one of your productions and hopes you will see him for an appointment”. So ran 16 year old Orson Welles’ audacious introductory note to Hilton Edwards, co-director of the newly founded Gate Theatre.
