Abstract

The site for the proposal is Nangang Bottle Cap Factory at Nangang District, Taipei, Taiwan. The factory had manufactured wine bottle caps since the late Japanese occupation era. It was closed in 2004 as the result of an urban renewal. The manufacture was relocated to another place, and this factory has been abandoned until now. There are several factory buildings on the site, but some of them were dilapidated and might create safety hazards. Designer is planning to propose a master plan for the whole site and will only redesign few buildings that have better condition and historical significance, as restaurants, retail stores, and recreation spaces. According to the analyses, the site has great potential to perform a significant role for both the region and Taipei City. The main goal for the development is to build new lifestyles and create more memorable experiencing opportunities to its neighborhood and visitors, as well as keep Taipei citizens’ memories. Because of its high living quality and no longer has the old stereotype, developing industrial area, to people, the benefit will be created, it will become a new spot for Taipei citizens, tourists, and even higher the willingness of moving in.

User Profile

Through previous studies, onsite observations, and questionnaires conducted, we know that the population groups in this area are diverse, including students, residences, office workers, and visitors. For the design site, we expect the users to be local as well as from the greater region. It will be a place to let people getting together after work or school, let residents dining out if they choose not to cook, and let citizens attending an event or just hanging out at a nice place on the weekends and holidays. The design will include restaurants, retail shops, and outdoor spaces. The restaurants will be at the middle-upper price range and are tend to be for people between 15 and 64 years old (the majority of the population in the surrounding area). During weekdays, the main target customers are office workers and homemakers; they can come here to work, eat, read, meet people, discuss business, or chat with friends. On weekends and holidays, the main target customers are families who want to get together, as there could be many events held in the surrounding area, the site could be a nice place for people to get away from the crowds, take a rest, and enjoy a quiet time together.

Steve Chang is a new resident of Nangang Didtric and is an employee of NEC. a high tech company in Nangang softwarepark. Below is what he said. Personally, I lived in Nangang district for six years. I moved here in order to be closer to my company, in Nangang Software Park. During the time of living here, I never know the old Nangang Bottle Cap Factory nor seen any potential of it, but now, instead of being an abandon world that is behind the walls, it brings joyful to this area as well as raise local residents’ living qualities. The newly designed factory created a new living style and to local residents. It provides new choices for people to eat, to shop, to stay no matter during weekday or weekend. The new designs also pay homage to its history so the land can keep its memories and also have stories to tell to the future generations. The designer used several strategies to make interior and exterior undividable, to create more interactions and possibilities at the boundaries. Therefore, people can enjoy natural environment while setting inside a restaurant, reading next to the threes in a bookstore, or bring some light food to picnic from a small shop. In this area, indoor and outdoor spaces contributes to each other and a spontaneous living style also been created.

Rory Read is president and chief executive officer of AMD company. He has only been to Memory Factory once. Below is what he said. Being a chief of a worldwide company, I have been to many high-end restaurants all over the world, but this one, touched me more than others. I had a short visit to Nangang and had a lunch meeting with my coworkers, so they brought me there, a newly designed restaurant collection, which is not far from Nangang Union Station. We choose a Japanese restaurant to hold our meeting and I have to say that the restaurant is a great space to have a talk of to think. The newly designing ways bring people diverse sensory experiences by keeping some of the old building features and containing modern interior elements, materials, as well as great exterior view. The designer combining used Chinese and Japanese garden techniques to bring the exterior into interior. With the well-designed landscape, people also can take a walk in the open space after the great dining experience.

Janet Hsieh is a Taiwanese American and has great amount experiences of traveling. She also is a host of Travel & Living Channel. Being a traveler and a celebrity in Taiwan, she has her own opinion of Memory Factory. The new factory does not only satisfy the region’s needs but also hold its own attitude that respect the land, the nature, and the site’s history. Even though I have been to lots of places around the world, Memory Factory still surprised me because of its power of creating and the connection between people and natural environment and the most important thing is that the new factory became a new local specialty after the redesign. The designer used engawas, decks, verandas, and eaves to blur the boundary lines, and particularly paid attention to the activities at these areas. In order to bring metaexperience and enriched memories to people, the designer used some strategies to achieve it, for example, the contracts of bright and dark, wide and narrow, vivid and vague. She also used some flooring patterns and materials to bring the old memory back and create the connection with the site, for instance, she used the old PiToun, a traditional Taiwanese artificial pond which was used to irrigate or prevent floods by water control in agricultural age, shape to build a new pond and be part of the flooring pattern to represent it on the site and used the old railway wood as one of the flooring materials to indicate how the railway brought people and prosperity into this area.

CHAPTER TWO

RESEARCH

This chapter will provide research information and will analyze potential, restrict, and opportunities of the site. It includes site analysis, building analysis, and president studies, so readers will understand all of the following plans and designs will be based on the research and current situations. In site analysis, it will introduce the background of the site, for instance, location, surrounding areas, cultures, histories, and demographics. In building analysis, readers will know background history and current situation of each of the factory buildings. In president studies, it will show some vision of future and strategies that designer learned from them.

Site Analysis

Location of the Site The site, Nangang Bottle Caps Factory, locates at No.13-1, Sec. 2, Nangang Rd., Nangang Dist., Taipei City, Taiwan. Nangang is at eastern Taipei and is spanned along the right bank of Keelung River and bordered by hills to the south. At northern Nangang District, Chong-Yang Road, Nan-Gang Road, and Zhong-Xiao East Road are the major roads with high population density and bustling commercial activities, with a little bit old industrial appearance. Southern Nangang District is more rural and closer to nature. After some large factories’closure, a number of projects were built, such as Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, Nankang Software Park (NKSP), and Nangang Depot joint development. Some transportation projects were also developed in this area within these few years, such as Taipei Metro, High Speed Rail, and three Freeways. Nangang is starting to play an essential role in Taipei City and will have great potential for future development.

Trends & Culture

a.

Eat, bike, and read are three most popular terms in Taipei City these few years. Taiwan is a well-known dining country since long. Taiwanese love delicious foods and has their own dining culture; venders, night markets, and restaurants are everywhere and dining happens anytime.

However, though a long time development and transition of living style, the request of delicacies are raise. People love fine foods as well as enjoy an interesting dining experience. Biking became a global trend since environmental awareness are raised. In order to catch this flow, Ubike, public biking system in Taipei, become more and more completed in these few years and the numbers of biker and cyclist are also keep growing in Taipei. Reading books also became a current trend in Taiwan because of the effect that Eslite, the bookstore, created. People love to hold a book physically like old time. They started to find books in book stores not online, visit independent bookstores, or even discover secondhand bookstores.otential for future development.

Zoning & Surroundings In order to relieve Taipei city’s congestion, Nangang have been targeted by Taipei government for many new developments, such as the just finished Nangang Exhibition Center, the Nangang Union Station (that serves several modes of public transportation, including bus, railway, metro, and hign speed rail systems), and the planned Popular Music Center. Since the zoning was changed from industrial to commercial and residential, many private developers have also been attracted to this area. The Nangang Rubber Tire Corp. factory has decided to move out of this area so the

land it occupies can be sold to build luxury condominium . The site, Nangang Bottle Caps Factory, occupies a prime location of Nangnag. It is right in front of the Union Station and just next to the planned Popular Music Center and many luxury residential properties, while the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall and Nankang Software Park (NKSP) are few blocks away. The surrounding areas are mostly for commercial, residential, and public uses. Its existing neighborhood has a great mix of residential buildings (some of them are mix-used with shops at the first floor), retails, office towers, and schools.

Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, also known as TWTC Nangang or TaipeiEx, consists of two exhibition halls and is a multipurpose exhibition complex. It is the largest exhibition and conference center in Taiwan. Besides hosting exhibitions, it can also be the place for large indoor sports and entertainment activities. 2017 Summer Universiade Fencing competition will also be held here. Nangang Software Park was developed in three phases. Phase I of the Software Park was completed in October 1999. IBM, TECO, Tradevan, NXP, and YAO5DX are a few of the 107 companies located in Phase I. Phase II was completed in September 2003. Siemens Medical, HSBC, Sony, AMD, and two Biotech Incubator Facilities are located in Phase II. Phase III was completed in August 2008, this Phase is home to one of the Asian Headquarters for HP, the Greater China Headquarters of Yahoo, the Microsoft Innovation Center, Asia Pacific Telecom, Alcor Semiconductor, TDK-Epcos, Freescale, IBM, INTEL, ASE (USI), A-10 Networks, and several other technology firms. Wired Magazine profiled the Nankang Software Park (NKSP) in 2000, when it named Taipei City the Number 1 Digital City in Asia (No. 8 in the World). In the article, it sited NKSP as one of the primary reasons for Taipei City’s strong rating. The Academia Sinica, headquartered in the Nangang District, is a national research institute. It supports research activities in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from mathematics, physics, life sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Popular Music Center is a cultural performance place, where is under construction, in Nangang. It includes Indoor performing hall, Outdoor performance space, Music Hall of Fame, Exhibition space, Digital Library, Theme park, and Industrial communities and incubation space. a. Access Even though Nangang district is at the edge of Taipei City, it has great opportunity to release the conjunction of the city by its low population density and convenience transportation systems. The site, Nangang bottle cap factory, just located beside Nangang Union station, which contains Taipei metro, high speed railway, bus terminus, and station of city bike. It also can be easily approached by highway system and the most bustling street, Nangang Road, which just besides the site, of the district. By these elements, it has great potential to bring in people from other region of the country, and join its neighbors’ daily life. Therefore, Nangang residents can come into the site simply by walk, take bus, or bike. Taipei citizens and tourists can easily get into the site by public transportation systems. People out of the city also can come to the site by high speed rail and highway system. It is really approachable for people.

There are plenty of parking spaces in the surrounding area, so the site only have to serve temporary parking space.

Site History Nangang is an eastern district of Taipei. It is the home to Academia Sinica, Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, and Nankang Software Park (NKSP). The settlement first started in 1735 and Nangang, literally means “Southern Port”, refers to its function and position on Keelung River. Nangang used to be the only industrial area in Taipei City, but now it is one of the most important science and technology center in Taipei. Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation Cap Factory was established in 1943, during the Japanese colonial era, and it was named “Domestic Cork Kogyo Co.,”. At the beginning, the factory not only produces iron caps but also the soft corks, cork sheets, and cork charring boards. After 1946, Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation (TTLC) took it over and renamed it Cork Factory. In 1956, the factory merged its eastern land. In 1958, the factory was renamed “Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation Cap Factory” and was specialized in the producing various caps and soft corks for 14 wineries owned by the TTLC. In its most glorious days, the annual output was 810 million and provides a lot of job opportunities for local residents. In 2004, it stopped all productions but most of the plants remain standing. Initially, the factory became a ruin site after the production was stopped; some youngsters gathered and spray-painted randomly. Few years later, film makers and artist groups spotted this place and started to film, exhibit, and hold events. The place became a popular filming scene and because of its retro look and great local history, the artist groups advocate for keeping the place with factory buildings instead of completely demolishing them to benefit the developers.

Demographic From the charts below, we can see the trend of people moving into this area during the last few years and we can assume the population will continue its gradual increase in the next few years. Since many of the new developments will be completed soon, and, according to Chart 3, Nangang District currently has the lowest population density, this area has the great potential to attract the crowd and become a new emerging center of Taipei.

a.

Weater / Climate Taipei City is located in subtropical zone, the average temperature is 74.5 degrees Fahrenheit. In the summer, from end of May to September, the weather is hot and humid, and the temperature is about 77.4 to 83.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall, from October to November, temperature is about 72 to 75.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter, from December to February, temperature is about 59.5 to 65.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The main rain season in Taiwan is the monsoon rains, from May to June, and the typhoon season, from July to September. In northern region, it also rains from February to April. In Taiwan, there is less rainfall in the winter, but the rainfall tends to be high throughout the year.

b.

c.

Plan for Future Development Currently, Taipei government plans to demolish the historical factory buildings to pave way for new developments, but the final plan has not been release yet. The land ownership has just been reverted back to the government at 2013, and opened the new development opportunity to private investors

d.

Building Analysis

Although they has been abandoned for many years, some of the Nangang cap factory buildings remain in decent shape, with complete roofing tiles, double high spaces, well-proportioned beams/columns structures, artists’ graffiti on walls with peeling paints, and some old trees. All of these bring about a unique timeless character to this place. As shown in the site plan, the block shaded light brown is the site for the designer’s proposal and the dark brown shaded buildings within this area are the original factory buildings. Some of these buildings were dilapidated and might create safety hazards, and the designer is planning to propose a master plan for the whole area and will only do detail design of few buildings with better condition, appearance, and historical significance. The spaces that she proposed to redesign are in Building F, G, I, and K. The basic information for each building is listed below.

Precedent Study I

Ruhrgebiet RUHR Ruhr industrial area locates at Northern Germany and it is four and a half hour drive from Berlin. Because of the rich coal reserve, it became a prosperous steel industry area, but as time changes, by 1980, the hundred years mining industry development has become a history. Factories closed and the area was left only with a large number of plants and environmental pollution. Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) (or Internationale Architecture Exhibition) led the region’s redevelopment program. Through highly creative design, it made Ruhr industrial area popular again. IBA recruited architects and artists to transform the plants and imagine suitable uses. For example, they use lighting installation art to change the factory’s atmosphere and turned it into a party venue. They also changed factory facilities and turned a cement wall into a playground’s climbing wall, converted deep gas tanks into diving rescue training pools, and built a dish building on the top of an abandoned elevated structure to create a topical UFO office, and so on. Instead of removing everything, IBA decided to give this area a new life by keeping the existing plants and production equipment. A plant, that used to be a place for resettling war prisoners and tank training, was transformed into a parent-child activity park by IBA. They started from flower exhibition and changed it step by step. They Planted flowers to reduce local pollution level, and though continually

organized activities and improved facilities, they increased public awareness and create popularity. A historical boatlift was preserved as a museum of the real industrial technology exhibition. A derelict gas tank was converted into an exhibition space and became a new landmark. A giant charcoal refining plant that used to consume tremendous energy became an energy exhibition hall. There is also a Ferris wheel for viewing the entire plant area. Ruhr (heavy) industrial area was originally a coast zone that consumed tremendous energy and created great harm to the local ecology. After careful consideration, German government decided to transform this area into a center for the pollution-free solar energy development. After a decade of development, a number of experiments were successful. Because of the high cost and other technical difficulties, solar energy have not been widely used, but these green buildings are impressive and seems to draw a beautiful vision for the future. I expect my site, Nangang bottle cap factory, that was a factory and also in an industrial zone, can transform into a nice place for citizens, and take environmental effects/ benefits into consideration. It can be a center of technology, culture, and environment.

Precedent Study II

The Island The Island is a café that transformed from a Japanese-style old building in Taipei, Taiwan. It is a quiet place full of greenery. The owners are two friends, Yong-Nan Chung, an architect, and Hui Ray, who works in the technology industry. They bought this two-story old house in 2009 through a government organized old house estate sale. They co-invested this property after considering its excellent location and its potential under the Taipei urban renewal plan. The house was built by a Japanese photographer, Sasaki Kojiro, in the colonial period. At the beginning, they did not consider opening a coffee shop; they only used the second floor as the architect’s studio. Not until they realized that the idle space on the first floor might be suitable for meeting, reception, or people enjoying delicious coffee, they joint operated this café. The house was just like a generic old apartment, and inside its old appearance, there are traditional Japanese beam structures, bamboo latice plaster walls, covered patio, and a large number of other wooden structures. In order to nicely preserve the beautiful old Japanese architectural features, they spend several months on renovation. They worked slowly, and decided on the next step only when they finish the one that they started. They said the biggest challenge is that they couldn’t know how to proceed until they pause and visualize each circumstance. Many of these strategies are suitable for my design of the

Nangang bottle cap factory. With this case study, I envision my site to be a beautiful place full of design controduction, and be a place where people can enjoy their meals in a comfortable Japanese retro style environment.

Strategies When they rebuild the old house, they preserved, as much as possible, the whole building’s original structure. To emphasis the sense of Japanese style, they mounted wooden ceiling at the first floor, and use wooden steps connecting to the studio on the second floor, and they built wall out of bookcase and filled them with architecture books. Particularly raised wooden floor also is one of their strategies to fill the space with a deep Japanese feeling, especially when people walk on them making a gentle and rumble sound. To increase brightness, they removed the patio shelter, which was built by the former residents, and installed glass to open up the space. Because of the fenestration, natural light can penetrate and create a sense of comfort for the space. They also use wood covered steel compartment to take care of leakage at the porch and to satisfy the aesthetic, and put Clapboard, a Japanese construction technique, at the building’s left and right exterior walls to prevent rainwater seepage into the house. They also planted a big tree alongside the building so people can feel nature’s tranquility and be refreshed at this café.

CHAPTER THREE

PROJECT DESIGN In this chapter, it contains whole series of the project development, from concept, spatial planning to a sequence of spatial design. In concept development, it shows the evolution of the concept, memory factory, and frame the guideline of future planning. In spatial planning, readers will see how the site grows gradually and also will see the result of the site plan, which based on previous analyses. In spatial design, it contains few series of developments of different focusing areas and each of them will be developed based on the site plan, concept, and their own sub-concepts, so the spaces in the site will be all related, but with varieties and attractions to different users and target customers.

Memory Factory is a place where creates joyful to people and will continually produce different types of memories for them. Memory usually considered as an abstract term to describe some past experiences. The site, Nangang Bottle Cap Factory, holds some Taipei citizens’ memories because of its rich history background. However, the old dilapidated factory cannot tell any story to people behind public-free walls, so the boundaries will be broke and the site’s strengths, natural resources, abundant history, and power of creativity, will be used to produce more new memories to the citizens just like a factory usually do. Meanwhile, the concept also will be applied into both interior and exterior spaces to create a comprehensive thought urban place and make them deeply connected together. Through the concept, the old factory can continually provide memories to people and let them explore the site by themselves via their heart, their mind, and their five sense. The site mainly be considered as four parts because of three main elements, nature, human, and factory history that extracted from the site’s memory. Base on the current situation, the most east part is full of trees, animals, and an old Pi-Toun background, so it is defined as natural part. (PiToun: a traditional Taiwanese artificial pond, usually used to irrigate or prevent floods by water control in agricultural age.) The north-west area is more emphasized the factory’s history because of the existing historical buildings, and un-

der the history aspect, it also be exploded by time, by age, by exiting elements, and people’s sensations. The most south part is considered as an outdoor place that mainly for human because it will be the main area that people will gather in the future. At the middle of the site will be a Japanese garden that holds all of the three elements. The reason is that the factory is built by Japanese in 1943 and moreover, Japanese garden is known as respecting the relationship between human and nature; therefore, it will be built at the center of the site.

Concept Ideas & Strategies Release Building Programs Because lack of high techniques, human live with land at the old time, but though time changes, all technology were improved, buildings became stabler, higher, and have more functions, so meanwhile, the buildings also block the relationship of letting people have more interaction with natural environment and some of architects also tend to consider interior programs in the buildings. One of the goals for the site is to release the programs back to the earth and think interior and exterior together to create a space where concentrates the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.

a. Bookstore & Its Satellites Another strategy that the designer used to achieve her goal, create a new living attitude to the neighborhood, is putting bookstore’s programs all over the site, so the site contains a main bookstore, a second-hand bookstore, and some satellites. The satellites have some physical books and some book samples with QR code, which can be connected back to the main bookstore, so people can either read the books in the shops or scene the QR code and get the book from the main bookstore.

At the old time, people live with land.

Since time changed, some architects tend to block interior programs in buildings.

The site will release the programs back to the earth. Think interior and exterior together.

Spatial Sequence In order to connect to the concept, memory factory, and bring variety experiences to the visitors, the designer also used some strategies to bring people discover the site step by step, just like memory has multiple layers but also link together. Though experiencing the site from one place to the other, people also can create their own new memories and build the connection with the land.

Create a space where concentrates the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Public Area Though previous analyses, designer defined both interior and exterior programs. Most of the interior spaces are restaurants and commercial used, but the spaces are still holding the great relationship with exterior spaces by different ways, for instance, though view, event, or accessibility. In the other hand, exterior spaces are mainly public used, like squares, Japanese garden, and small forest; it is really welcoming for all of the visitors no matter weekday or weekend. The designer took all of the site’s entrances, routes, transportation systems, user’s behavior, and even predicted the events and activities into consideration to make all of the programs totally fit into the site and make the site more comfortable and welcoming to the diverse users.

est studios, and a visit center where contains the site-related document. One of the designer’s strategies, bookstore & its satellites, is also applied in programming aspect, so the client, Eslite Bookstore Company, can keep their stage and bring more new memories to their customers and all of the visitors of the site though events and knowledge.

Bike & Public Transportation In order to fit the retail program and create a new life attitude to the region, public transportation system, loading area, temporary parking space, bike lane, and bike parking space are planned while designer making the decision of interior and exterior programs.

Retail Program

The site’s retail programs are mainly based on three aspects, goal, concept, and client. The chief goal of this project is to create a new living style for its neighborhood as well as keep the site’s memory, so in order to achieve this goal, designer find the current trend of Taipei City and use it to respond the goal; therefore, restaurants, bike shop, flower shop, bakery, and bookstores are included in the site. To answer the concept, memory factory, and keep the site’s memories, the retail program also includes wine store, arti-

Site Plan

Based on the concept, memory factory, designer did the master plan by keeping old and creating new, so all of the plants and even some dilapidated buildings will be kept, but some new elements will be brought into the site, for example, bike lane, plazas, allays, interior programs, and new ponds. There are three new water elements in the site, but all of them hold different functions, features, and meanings for people. The one locate at the most east part of the site, in the nature area, has more relationship with natural environment and the shape it has was defined by the old pi-tung, which originally located in this area, so people can interact with plants and animals as well as knowing part of the site’s history when they walk around the small pond. The one at the center of the site is in a Japanese garden, so it looks more artificially beautiful. People can enjoy the seasonal changed views from the deck and the surrounding restaurants. It also provides a great respect to the Colonial Era Administration Building, which right now is a Japanese restaurant and holds the greatest meaning and most traditional appearance in the site. People can see its reflection when they stroll through the small path in the small hill, so some new memories will be created when they experience the beautiful area. The small fountain in the manmade area has more direct interaction with people. Kids can play around the water, adults can seat beside, on the rocks or stair seating. It also creates a view for those who come out from the visit center, so the sundial on the tallest stone reminds the visitors the old factory background of the site.

From site section A-A’, we can see the relationship of Japanese Garden and its surrounding area. The pond is surrounded by a tea house, a Jazz lounge bar, and a small hill, so people from almost all direction can enjoy the pond and the view it creates. People can see the pond and plants from the engawa outside the tea house and the deck outside the Jazz lounge. Also can see the pond with building reflection when they walk though the small hill. The pond also is a rain garden, water level will be changed by precipitation, so the diverse feeling by seeing the changed of water level also have been put into consideration. For the plant plan of this area, the designer used both of color and shape to provide a diverse visual experience. She planted seasonal plants at the inner circle of the pond while evergreens are farer, so the natural scene will be vary by season changes, but during winter, the garden can still keep background for those who are in the surrounding buildings and at the engawa and the deck. The evergreens are not only planted to block people’s sights of seeing out, but also can provide shading for pedestrians who walk on the routes beside it. A carefully manicured tree is planted at the most significant position beside the pond to attract people by shape-changed. All of the strategies are used to provide a variation vision experience to people. From section B-B’, we can see the relationship between visit center and the southern plaza. When people see out from the visit center, the most first thing they see will be a high stone with a sundial on it while have some fountain

water covers part of it. It will lead people go further into the site by curious, to see the view of the stone or find the source of water sound. Then when they physically go out of the building and move to the plaza, they will see an open space with some stair settings, stones, a fountain, and a grass hill. The materials of this area are mainly choose by seating-friendly, so it is really welcoming plaza to kids to play and people to stay. Kids can climb the stones and play with water. Parents can seat and see their kids. Office workers can have a lunch on the grass or stairs while enjoy the sun. Citizens also can have new spot for picnic or watch a show during weekend. It will be a multi-functional plaza for the neighborhood and for citizens.

Sustainable Design The designer also has a series thought of sustainable design. She defined building M as living machine where includes anaerobic digester, turbine generator, aquaponic system, and battery bank. All process of the site are based on the living machine, from water cycle, energy cycle, to additional production are all related to this building. For water cycle, Japanese pond in the site is the center of rain collection system; it collects from no matter rooftops or ground, and the water will flow to building M gradually, and by passing through a series of water purifying plants, the water will be cleaned. The cleaned water will be used for fish cultivation or distribute to other buildings for daily needs. Then the used water will be cleaned again from anaerobic digester and purifying plants, so the water cycle will be created. For energy cycle, while the anaerobic digester working, it creates bio gas, and by turbine generator, the bio gas will be used to create electricity and heat. The electricity will be save into the battery bank, which also gather energies from solar glass, solar panel, and simulating bikes. The heat will be used to HVAC system, and the steam this process created will be used in brewery, and finally, these energy will be used in the site and by the process of conversion, it contribute several additional productions, for example, beer and tea. Grain, barley, and tea are not only been used to contribute the cycles, but also can be used to satisfy the site’s programs, tea house and wine shop.

Landscape Area I

a. The designer defined the north-west of the site as Factory Area because this area contains the majority of the factory buildings. b. One of the master plan is to preserve the plants that originally in the site. c. Some of the structures are completed and have historical meanings. d. Graffitis are all over the site. It shows the power of creativity that the site contains.

49 48

Concept Most of the factory buildings are located at the north-west of the site, so designer defined area one as factory area; programs and sub-concepts within this area are also developed and be emphasized base on the history of factory period. For the master plan, the designer use the area’s specialty, the density of the factory buildings, to shape allays, and also used it to create conformable spaces to let people stroll, stay, and shop, like in a “small village. In order to keep the power of creativity that origin from the site, the designer used some strategies to preserve it, for example, simply keep some of the building walls as graffiti used, so the site can be used to hold graffiti events seasonally in the future. It will create an opportunity to make the site as a well-known spot for graffitists and public. Graffitists will use this stage to show their skills and satisfied their desire of creation within permission and with competitions. People will have a place to go during weekend while enjoy the arts.

a.

b.

Master Plan Landscape design in this area mainly focused on circulation and the relationship between allays and shops. Designer considered the existing bus system that on the most bustling road will be one of the main public transportation that Taipei citizens will take to visit, so the designer created

a new bus stop with a new entrance lead visitors come into the site with a series of spatial sequence experience. In order to create the feeling of arrival and let people can stay and shop while waiting for their bus, designer combining considered the bus stop, its waiting space, and interior programs of the buildings. The shops that located at the outermost of the site are decided by their street friendly features and the need of its neighborhood, for instance, second-hand bookstore, flower shop, bakery, wine shop, and to-go beverage store. Being a transforming area, the old industrial neighborhood lack of these shops, so they are not only serve the tourists from the bus stop, but also satisfied the needs of the residents. After people be led into the site, no matter by the street-friendly shops or the changing paving of the sidewalk, they will see a pyramid-shaped visit center, few artist studios, and allays with graffiti walls, and then when they go further, they will see some views that using framing and contract of bright and dark to lead them go even further into the site. Therefore, interior and exterior programs contribute each other in the site.

Strategies The designer also used some strategies that traditional Chinese garden used to create the spatial sequence to answer the concept, memory factory, to let people go into the site step by step and explore it little by little, just like the multiple layers of memory. In order to bright some of the spaces, the designer used three different techniques to achieve it. One, she used the contract between bright and dark to let people aware of the changes from one place to the other. Two, she created some views at the end of the allays, so people will be led to the other area by attractions or curious. Three, she used some manmade creations to frame some views to emphasize the feeling of arrival and provide a variety visual experience before people actually get into the spaces. These series of plans are mainly focused on providing the diverse experiences and enjoyments to visitors while they are exploring the site.

Visitor Center

Concept The visitor center is a new space that the designer created in the center of the factory area, and it is designed based on “time. It has a conspicuous appearance, so when people enter the site, they will see the visitor center right away and will be led into it by its pyramid roofing shape. The designer used pyramid shape and explored staircases to show the restricted and industrial feeling of factory period, and used site related material, cork and iron, to show respect to the history of the site. She also used a giant art work, with sandglass shape, answering the concept, time, at the middle of the visitor center. 01

Spatial Design The visitor center is created to solve the issue of narrow alley, which was dark and gathered trash. By creating a focal point of the site, it will be a new place gathering people and memory the history of factory period. It will create new memories to people by using an idea of comboining interactive technique and jukebox, so people can order their memorable songs and have fun with the interacting wall.

Bike Store

Concept

a.

The sub-concept this bike store based on to achieve the main concept, memory factory, is film. The designer extract the sub-concept from the site’s history and one of the site’s main features, power of creativity. During the abandon time, film makers spot the site and use their cameras and keen eyes catch the beauty of ruins of the site and make the site as one of the famous filming scenes in Taipei city. To remember this part of history and to keep the power of creativity, the designer found some commons between bike, film, and the site, and used film as the concept to support the bike store to achieve the main goal, keep old memory while create more memories. The relationship between film and this bike store also been deepened from both film’s history and the site’s history. From film history, the very first movie in the world, The Arrival of a Train La Ciotat Station, is related to train and railway. From the site’s history, back to the past, train is one of the most primary transportation systems of transporting raw materials to factories for long distances. By saving time and efforts, factories tend to be built besides the transportation systems, and, no different, the reason of the bottle cap factory’s location also related to the old train station, which just next to the factory and has been move to underground because of urban renewal just like all other railways’ destination in Taipei city. The site, Nangang bottle cap factory, is the only factory left with the railway history

in Taipei city, and in order to keep this part of history to all of Taipei citizens as well as answer the sub-concept, film, the designer brought train elements into the bike store and will use old sleeper as one of the materials to bring back the memory to people. The designer used color, lighting, window display, and relationship with exterior space to answer the idea of using train to bring back people’s memories. She used window display to indicate train window; when customers see out of the bike store, they will see bikers pass though the site, just like passengers look out of the train from train windows, they see things moving fast. Lighting, color, and even a simulating area in the bike store are all based on building a feeling of walking into a film studio to customers, so some areas are looks more dramatic than other stores

55 54

and some views with lighting effects, will let people think of film and train subconsciously. Film also known as motion picture. It is a series of pictures be put together with order, so in the bike store, the designer used this feature of film to do the wall design and also used it to build the visual change between two dimensional poster and three dimensional display. Visually, people will see bikers in the wall poster jump out from second floor and will enter the display windows at first floor. Since the display windows looks like a film, people will see the bikers go into the film too. The designer also used bike trainer as one of the elements in simulating area. Currently, most of bike stores does not provide a specific area for bike trainers or let customers try bikes on the trainers easily, so the designer planed an area for this need and the atmosphere of film studio also be built at the same time.

Spatial Design The bike store contains displaying area, simulating area, repairing area, semi-exterior bike lane, a grab and go cafĂŠ with few outdoor seating, and back of the house spaces, like storage, restroom, elevator, and a small kitchen. First floor of the bike store mainly used for bike display, merchandise display, and some spaces let customers try the bikes. When people first come into the store, they will see a main feature of bike display with some merchandise and an advertising screen behind. They can turn left go into the bike store by pass through the screen, turn right to the grab and go cafĂŠ, or shop the first floor merchandise. When pass through the screen, customer will see a simulating area. By using idea of trainer and combining used with the screen, this area not only fit the function of letting people try bikes, but also create an atmosphere of theater. The designer also keep some blank spaces in the store, so people can try bikes both on the trainers and ride around the shop physically. The store also has a repair area besides its back door, which next to a bike parking lot, at first floor, so people can drop their bikes in the parking space and shop in the bike

store. The bike parking lot also contains an outdoor repair area, which can be combining used with the indoor repair space, so bikers can ride their bikes into the site and give it to the bike store staff directly when they need helps. To keep some bike trying spaces, merchandise in this bike store is mainly displayed on second floor. People can go upstairs by the film inspired stair or an elevator. When they see downstairs, they will see a window display with both film and train window ideas. They will see bikers ride through the shop in windows. This bike store also has a grab and go café with few outdoor seating, so people can have a cup of coffee while not far from their bikes and also can enjoy the events in the southern plaza at the same time. In order to attribute the bike lane in the site, the designer set the bike store aside a little to let the bike lane pass through the store, so customers in the shop can have an interesting view of seeing bikes back and forth. Bikers also can see window display of the bike store or ride their bikes to the bike parking space or repair area and go into the store easily.

Landscape Area II

Southern palza will be the greatest open space of the site. Children can play; office workers can have lunch; people can have events here.

67 66

Concept One of the crucial factors that the site contains is human. The term human here has diverse meaning for the site. Human dominates this site for past century; they decided the site’s destiny by build the Pi-Tung, tear the Pi-Tung, build the factory, reuse the factory, and even consider to tear the factory; the site does not have any chance to defend itself. The only thing it can do is wait for the next decision. Another meaning here is during factory period, workers have to completely follow their commanders’ order, so the factory can work fluently and done their missions in time, so people also determine how the factory work deeply. The last reason for the defining is that this area contains the largest hard surfacing open space and it creates great potential for the future exterior activities and it also will be a great space to gather people, so one of the bus stops is planned here and some outdoor plazas and an interactive fountain also will be in this area. This area will be the most welcoming place for all kinds of people and also will create new memories to them.

The designer defined the southwest of the site as Manmade Area because this area has the greatest potential to gather people in the future.

Master Plan Landscape design is the most crucial factor in this area because of its great open space, and by lacking natural resources, the designer defined this area as the most important outdoor space for gathering people and holding events. This area contains two plazas, a grass hill, a bus station, a restaurant, and some parking spaces for scooter. According to the site analysis, people will come into this area from diverse directions. It will receive most of the business workers across the street and has great potential to have a new landmark, new bus stop, and a scooter parking lot to welcome Taipei citizens and Nangang residents. Business workers and surrounding residents can come to this area for a lunch break or family picnic; kids can play in the manmade fountain or climb between the stones; tourists can have a feeling of arrival by seeing the sundial landmark either from the route connected to the east part of the site or from the north axis when they go out from the visit center.

Strategies One of the most important strategies in this area is led people come and stay spontaneously, so it has a lot of seating places and multiple seating types to let people stay. The designer designed a seating stairs besides the main plaza and used seating-friendly material, wood, on the concrete stairs, so even without any event, people will still love to seat on the stairs. The designer also kept top of the grass hill flat and as the same level of the top of the stair, so people can easily picnic or watch shows from the hill. The last strategy the designer used is making the stone height suitable for seat, so business workers can have a lunch while get a sandwich from the grab and go cafĂŠ; parents can stay and watch their kids while they are play; people can have a better spot for watching a show. All of these strategies are making people stay.

Landscape Area III

The designer defined the most east part of the site as Nature Area because this area contains great value of natural resource.

71 70

Master Plan The most east part of the site contains great value of natural resourse. Currently, this area has been occupied by many different species of animals and plants, and looks like a small forest. The designer planned to preseve all of the plants, with good conditions, natural resources, and even the dilapidated look buildings, after construcion strengthen, to make this area more environmental friendly and welcoming for creatures. She also used these specialties to build an oasis to Taipei citizens and its neighborhood. Some strategies she used to bring in people and animals are simply put some paving to lead people in, clean up and reenforce the old buildings, and added a new pond, with historical Pi-Tung shape at the original site, so the environment can be more friendly to anilmals and the memory of the site also can be remembered for long.

Concept Area three will be a place planned to let plants grow wantonly, let animals have a comfortable habitat in the city, and also let people can enjoy natural environment by visit the animals’ domain and the old buildings. This area was designed based on “nature”, so all of the decesions and sub-concepts were made based on it. For example, the main bookstore within this area shows the meaning of natural environment rebels the civilized world by its sub-concept, “nature take over”.

All of original plants, buildings, and creatures in area III were put into considerations and most of them will be presered.

Main Bookstore

Concept This book store is going to use knowledge to create memory to people and the sub-concept it based on to achieve the core concept, memory factory, is “nature take over. Tree always known as the metaphor of knowledge, so in this bookstore, the designer used tree and nature to indicate book and knowledge. The building was considered the one has the greatest influential by natural resource and has the greatest opportunity to bring all beautiful views into the building. By its location, most east of the factory buildings, it is the one closest to the small forest, and by its height and surrounded by the small forest and planned Japanese garden, it became the only one place where people can enjoy all views that the site provide.

73 72

Inspiration For the spatial planning, the designer got inspired from animals and their habitats; animal to reader; food to book; nutrient to knowledge, so the bookstore can be considered as a small ecosystem in the nature area of the site. The designer used the book tree as the center of the space, and let people be attracted into the book tree, like animals forage for food in the natural environment. After they find the books, they can take it and find a corner in the book store to read, stay for a while, and decide buy it or not, like animals will go back to their habitat after they get their food.

Book Tree Book tree is an idea of combining mechanic system, bookshelf system, and circulation system in one place. To answer the inspiration, habitat, the designer developed book tree to make the small footage building has more opportunities to let people read, stay, and have fun. Book tree will create new ways and new attitudes of reading, finding, and selling books in a new age bookstore.

There are three ways to get books from the book tree. For option one, people can read book samples in the site and pick up the books from the main bookstore. There are a lot of bookstore’s satellites all over the site, so visitors can get book samples from each of the satellites, and by scan the QR code into smart phone, they can order the

books from the book tree system and then pick it up in the main bookstore. For option two, people can get books in the bookstore directly. In the bookstore, there are two ways to get books. One is traditionally find the books from the bookshelf. Two is using the book tree system to find books. There are book searching area and e-book area in the bookstore, so customers can use in-store system to find the books and either let robotic arm get the books, or physically go into the book tree and get the books. For option three, people can get books or search books at home. Like most of the bookstore do nowadays, the bookstore also has website and online system, so people can easily find books at home. Then they can either order it online or add the books, they are interested in, into their accounts, and then personally visit the bookstore; read and decide whether they want to buy it or not.

Book Category The designer defined the book category for each of the floor from the concept, nature take over. The bookstore will show it has been took over by nature gradually by its book category. The book type in upper level will be more natural related or origin, for example, history and environment. Book type in lower level will be more current, like bestselling, e-books, and book searching area. Middle levels will be literature, art & design, and so on, to show the process of civilizing, so nature also took over the manmade building by book category.

First-floor Plan

Base on the concept, nature take over, programs and spaces in the bookstore are more encouraging people embrace environment, so the designer used surrounding outdoor views to contribute the interior spaces, and also defined a lot of seating places in the bookstore to let customers can get a book, sit, and read. They can easily find a spot in the bookstore as well as can casually sit on the floor. The bookstore believes if people willing to sit and read, it will be worthy to provide a space to let people stay, so the main idea for the spatial design of the bookstore is to create reading corners to people; let them can be like animals, get their prey and go back to their habitats. The bookstore also applied its concept though its spatial planning. The book tree is the center of the bookstore, and it also catches people’s eyes by its shape and powerful look. Unlike other spaces, with angular straight lines, the book tree is softer and without any angle, so it became a contract from other spaces of the building as well as hold the meaning of natural environment rebels the civilized world by destroy the manmade creation, the building. It also means a big tree breaks though the building and trying to use knowledge to influence the area. When people first come into the book store, they will see an elevator surrounded by stairs and books. It is the most first idea for the bookstore. The concept is to create a scene of seeing people walk in front of books vertically and surrounded by books when they are in the elevator, so the designer developed the book tree to achieve the concept thoughts, and by combining bookshelf system, circulation system, and mechanic system, it also created more opportunities to other spaces. The bookstore can have more spaces to achieve the goal of letting people stay. At the first floor, it contains a coffee shop, an e-book reading and searching area, some sofa seating, and some outdoor seating under veranda. At second and third floor, it contains a lot of different types of seating places, people can sit on the sofa, beside window, or even facing out to the natural environment, so they can enjoy their reading time though the way they like.

101 100

Concept This area is located at the center of the site and by the factory history, this area contains the most dominated building, Japanese colonial era administer building, which holds the most completed and Japanese style appearance and most important position. Therefore, no matter from the location or the meaning behind, this area is considered the most important area and its concept was defined by tracing back to the origin of the site, a factory built in Japanese colonial era with great relationship between human and nature. By combining these three elements, the designer defined the concept of this area as Japanese garden, a best way of representing the traditional Japanese idea of respecting the relationship between human and nature.

The designer defined the cenetral area as Japanese Garden Area, a best way of respecting the relationship between human, nature, and the history of the site.

Master Plan Landscape design in this area mainly focused on creating a peaceful place to people, so in this area, it contains a Japanese pond, seasonal plants, and a tea house. The Japanese garden will provide a place let people clear their mind and think, and also, it will create great views to surrounding places, so people can enjoy the beautiful scenery from both indoor and outdoor spaces. In the garden, people can ramble with seasonal plants and Japanese pond besides the trail. They also will see the reflection of Japanese colonial era administer building from the pond. It shows respect to the building and the history of the site. In order to let people enjoy the garden view from buildings and veranda, the designer defined hospitality programs for surrounding buildings, like tea house, jazz lounge, and setting areas in bookstore. For those who first time visit the site, they will be lead into the garden subconsciously because the frame views and views at the end of allays, the designer created intentionally, will arouse their curiosity to explore the site.

Strategies The giant pond in the Japanese garden has three different usage ways and meaning. One is to create distance from people to people; second is answer the concept, memory factory; third, is used as a rain water collecting place to make the site friendlier to the earth. The designer used plants and water to clear people’s mind to answer the concept, memory factor, and also used the pond to create a distance between tourists and customers in the tea house and lounge bar, so both of them can enjoy the garden view relaxingly, meanwhile, the respect of Japanese colonial era administer building will be shown. In sustainable design phase, the giant pond also be used as rain garden to keep rain water in the site and by a living machine nearby, the water will be clean and be used by the buildings in the site.

Tea House

Concept The tea house was designed based on its sub-concept, go back to origin, to achieve the main goal, memory factory. By the history and site analysis, this building occupies the most important location and position of the site. It was located at the center of the factory buildings and was Colonial Era Administration Building, so considered playing the most dominative role in the site. Link back to the main concept, memory factory, when people talk about center of memory or center of mind, they think of a feeling of quiet and peaceful, so the designer did a tea house in this area to provide a space let people think, relax, and blank himself. Based on go back to origin, the tea house was designed with neutral color, natural materials, and traditional Japanese style behaviorology. In the tea house, the designer encourages people seat on the floor directly. According

105 104

to traditional Japanese behaviorology, it will make people calm, peaceful, and can listen to their heart. The designer also got inspired by traditional Japanese tea house. Traditionally, tea houses are with low ceiling height and door height, so when people enter into the spaces, they stoop and gradually move and turn their body by their bottoms or knees. In the tea house, the designer keep the traditional behavior to customers, but cooperated with new ideas, materials, and made it have more connection with the site. In design development, the designer used bamboo as one of the inspiriting elements, which extracted from Japanese garden as well as Taiwanese culture. Bamboo plays such an important role in traditional Taiwanese culture. It symbols of uprightness and gentlemen by its shape, joints, and hollow-heart. To be a gentleman, a man does not need to be physically strong, but he must be mentally strong, upright, and perseverant. It is a noble in traditional Taiwanese culture. The designer combined the meaning it preserve with Japanese garden and the concept to bring the connection between the tea house and the site. She used both of real and symbol of bamboo in the tea house. Rope is the material she chose as the symbol of bamboo. With strength, it can be straight, and from its appearance, its pattern looks like the joints bamboo has. Also, its neutral color match the color tone the tea house expected, and the strength rope also provides an industrial feeling to the tea house to show the respect of the factory history to the site.

Floor Plan

Even though the building is called tea house, it serve food and alcoholic drinks, so the programs it contains are waiting area, sushi bar, tatami area, tea rooms, some regular seating, kitchen, restroom, and back of the house place. The waiting area is not only an indoor place, but also can be combining used with outdoor deck, so people can wait either in the couch or outside the building with garden view. When people first come into the building, they will see an indoor artificial garden scene as a transition of the Japanese garden, and also provide a relaxing feeling for those who are waiting. The sushi bar is located at the back of the artificial scene, and will expose partial of it at the outdoor space, so people can seat on the sushi bar like in traditional Japanese Izakaya, a type of Japanese dining and drinking place for after-work relaxing, when the weather is suitable. In tatami area, it does not specifically use tatami as flooring material, but use the idea of tatami room that let people seat on the floor. The designer used furniture design to provide different arrangement types of table and seating in tatami area, so the restaurant can solve the problem of hard moving furniture in restaurants and different customer needs on floor seating. With the furniture design, tables can easily fit different numbers of people; from simply press a button to let tables go up and down, it can serve for one person to a group of people, so it make waiters easier to change the tables while customers are waiting and also provides flexibility to contain different type of groups. Traditionally, there are two types of seating in tatami room. One is seating with crossing legs, another is seat with a basin space letting people put their feet down. In this tatami area, the designer developed a new type of seating that satisfied both of the needs of people, so by simply moving a wood board, they can choose a seating type they prefer during their meal times. The tea rooms are considered having the greatest view of the Japanese garden. The designer expected to create a tranquil space for people, so in this area, people will feel calm and can have a chance to think deeper or totally blank themselves, escape from the bustling life. Unlike traditional tea houses, not intended to provide a view to the outside from windows, this tea room is expected to build more relationship between people and the landscape, so the designer even created a new seating type for it. In the tea rooms, customers not only can sit facing to each other, but also can sit next to their peers, so they can see the garden view together and directly.

Furniture Design The designer developed a series of furniture design for the tatami area in the tea house to solve the problem of uncomfortable floor-setting while preserve the traditional Japanese style and behaviors. The newly designs provide different choices to customers when they are dining in the area. It combined two types of setting in one place and diverse types of table arrangement, so customers can decide which type of setting they want by themselves, and the restaurant also can easily change the space to fit different customer groups. Traditionally, Japanese cross their feet while seat on tatami rooms, and after translation, some restaurants have another type of seating, which is letting people put their feet down when they are dining, so it became easier to who are not familiar with crossing feet setting. However, with the translation, they miss the most origin feeling and ideas; they are no longer close to the earth like their ancients, and also loss the fun of setting on the floor with crossing feet for some people. In this tea house, it fits different needs of people, preserves the traditional culture, and also provides the interest of changing setting types and table arrangements.

Autobiography

I want to be an interior designer who draws inspiration from people’s life story and its cultural and environmental context, and designs space that is inseparable from the surrounding landscape. I want to create designs that don’t just look good on the magazine cover, but actually improve human life and advance the environment’s sustainable future. Influenced by my father who, since I was a little girl, frequently drop me in the bookstore or take me to the mountainside, I became a ferocious reader of stories and a passionate lover of the environment. I am also fortunate to grow up in Taiwan, an island lies at the earth’s collision crust where nature’s awesome force brings a rich and fragile eco-system, and where the indigenous group, the settlements that came at different periods, and the past colonization by the Dutch and the Japanese created agonizing memories and complex emotions that resonate to this day. It is in this context that I developed a subtle sensitivity to both the human and the nature world around me, and a clear purpose to help heal and nourish both. I fell into the study of landscape architecture through the sorting of a national college entrance exam. The study introduced me to a median that brings together nature and culture, and provided me a tool to create positive intervention. As one of my third-year student projects, I proposed a redesign of the historical marketplace that fell victim to a failed development aimed solely at creating an enclosed glass box without considering the needs of local market activities and many lives that depend on it. I proposed a

circular arcade with both inside and outside spaces to facilitate sales and service activities, and to connect with its current and historical context via layering and symbolism. My proposal won me the National Student Design Competition Award, which encouraged me to breakdown the boundary between interior and landscape design, and aspired me to focus on projects that can make a difference to people’s life. Through my background and experience, I realized that what I believe is an interdisciplinary approach to people’s living space, and a way of design centered on people’s emotions and memories and is inseparable from the culture and environment. A space is often most exhilarating where the edge of inside and outside is blurred and ambiguous, and when a coherent design philosophy brings together the best of both worlds. I learned to see what’s superficial and what’s meaningful to people’s life, and I believe there can be no great design solution by dividing the design of interior and exterior space. I believe that during the years at Academy of Art University, I will enrich myself by strengthening the design aspect of interior space and enhancing the researching skills, and will have the ability to advance my goal. My plan for the graduate study is to construct a way of thinking interior space that built on my passion for people’s life stories, and on my sensitivity and ability in designing a great environment for living.
