. . . s y u G r e v Move O g n i h t e m o S ’s Here n e m o W e h t For The summer season is in FULL Swing and LADIES we all know what that means – we just want to cool off. I know that when I plan on spending the day at either the beach or the pool, I like to cool off by not only by taking a dip in the water – but with an ice cold refreshing drink – one of the alcoholic kind.

If you’re thinking, “No way, I have to stay far away from those calorie filled drinks when I’m in a bathing suit,” STOP THINKING THAT WAY!!! There are now so many great tasting and refreshing low calorie alcohol drinks – it seems like a sin to not indulge!

Here’s my TOP TEN LIST of low calorie

drinks that will keep you looking good in that bikini – or tankini, or one piece!

Michelob Ultra, the original “low-carb beer” is the perfect choice for someone looking for truly great tasting beer with less than 3 carbs. Thought it has nearly 100 calories, this brew is refreshing, crisp, and has nearly double the amount of alcohol of Bud Select- so maybe a few more calories evens out with the fact that it has a higher alcohol content.

1 - Bud Select Calories: 55 Carbs: 1.9g Bud Select comes in at the lowest calories wise with a mere 55, and is a perfect choice for those counting calories. It does only have 2.4% alcohol content so if you’re looking to get a quick buzz, it will take quite a few of these low-calorie bad boys. But, if you’re like me, and just love the taste of beer on a hot summer day – this is the perfect selection.

3 – Michelob Ultra Calories: 95 Carbs: 2.6g

4 - Lindemans Framboise Calories: 95 Carbs: 23g If you fruity beer is more to your liking, then you have to try Lindemans Framboise. This ultra -fruity raspberry brew is quite the treat – tasting more like a soft drink, candy, or dessert than a traditional beer…but contains fewer calories than any of those three indulgences. It’s worth the carb splurge!

2 – Beck’s Premier Light Calories: 64 Carbs: 3.2g Beck’s Light delivers a crisp taste you’d expect from a premier brand – for only 64 calories! It’s light, refreshing, and has a brisk natural flavor – perfect for a hot summer day!

14 NWIEn t e rta i n e r.c o m • A u gu s t 1 3

5 – Corona Light Calories: 109 Carbs: 5g

8 – Summer Shandy Calories: 130 Carbs: 12g

Cracking open an ice cold Corona just screams summer, and luckily there is a light version. Corona Light doesn’t skimp out on taste from the original, and when you added a lime wedge you don’t even realize you’re drinking a light beer!

This fruity beer is a great substitute for a classic drink I love – MARGARITAS!! We all know margaritas are loaded with sugar, and Summer Shandy is a great replacement. And get this – walking for 36 minutes will burn off one of these beers – not bad!!

9 - Skinnygirl Ready to Serve Cocktails Calories: under 100 Serving Size: 4 oz. The new rave for women is the Skinnygirl! They have an assortment of vodka’s and wine, but perhaps what’s easiest to drink is their ready-to-serve cocktails. With varieties like Sweet ‘N’ Tart Grapefruit Margarita, Mojito, Pina Colada, Sangria, and a White Cranberry Cosmo, you will feel like you are always on vacation sipping one of these! But just remember, the calories are for a 4oz. serving, so if you’re planning on filling up your big girl cup, you’ll have to double or triple the calories!

6 – Sam Adams Light Calories: 119 Carbs: 9.7g There are many light beers on the market, but this is my favorite Boston Lager. It has such a crisp taste and is absolutely perfect poolside with your friends.

7 – Guinness Calories: 126 Carbs: 9.9g You may be wondering how a dark heavy beer like Guinnesss won’t pack on the pounds. Well, it’s the lightest of its kind – and if you want to feel a little a better about consuming the 10 carbs, consider skipping your morning cup of joe and splurge for a cold Irish beer at night instead!

10 – Light Alcohol Sweet or Dry Wine Calories: 107 -147 Serving Size: 6 oz.

If it’s sweet you crave like a glass of Riesling or Moscato d’Asti, or dry like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, you’ll be excited to know that it’s under 150 calories for a glass. And if you want a wine spritzer, just add some zero calorie 7-up or Sprite – that way you’ll have more to drink in your glass and the same amount of calories!

NWI MUSIC “Energy Commission” Album Release Party

Earlier this year, we introduced our readers to The Energy Commission – a nine member band that’s more than just a band. The high-energy group is really turning some heads and is gaining new fans every time they play. They’ve headlined major venues in Chicago like the Double Door, the Cubby Bear, the House of Blues, and most recently – Chicago’s legendary Metro! Energy Commission prides themselves in playing all original music, and now their fans will be able to take that music home with them. “We are releasing our first album titled, Consistently Inconsistent,” said band member Jay Weinberg. “This is our first album as a full band. We’ve been focused on our live show for nearly two years with the current members, but I knew it was time to put this together for our fans. I wanted to make sure the album was inspired. The eleven song album has songs written by band members Jay, Danielle and Tony. One of the songs was written ten years ago and is only now being revitalized to its full potential. Most of the other songs were written

recently, but have been worked into the live show. Fans will be able to hear nine of the new songs in a live performance by the Energy Commission at the House of Blues on August 24th. They also plan to have some special guest performers along like Weinberg’s newfound friend Mark Thomas, owner of “The Alley” in Chicago. “We are building an awesome relationship with Mark,” said Weinberg. “We’ve been giving out free tee shirt cards to The Alley at all of our shows and Mark has some big ambitions for the coming year that he will be discussing at the show.” This album release party will be quite unique because it is taking place at the IAM Fest: The Independent Arts and Music Festival. The show at the House of Blues is for all ages, and will feature approximately nine different bands. The Energy Commission will be one of the bands performing, and if things go as they did last year they may become the headline act. “Last year we sold around 350 tickets to the show, and this year we are trying to outdo ourselves.” said band member Clinton Worthington. Since this is such a monumental show for the band the Energy Commission has plans to GO BIG and pull out all the stops for the show! “I’m working on a four foot by four foot art piece for the stage,” said Worthington. “And we have some surprises too; some really ambitious ideas for the show.” And since the band is known for their theatrics, fans can really expect some magic. The Energy Commission is ahead of the curve so don’t expect the album to see the album on a CD. There will be more precise digital representations of their album available for purchase that speak to the way people are consuming music today. One version will take shape in a one-of-akind Energy Commission USB drive, and being that they are such a visual band it will be loaded with exclusive video content, behind the scenes footage, and artwork you won’t find anywhere else. They also have plans of doing a Pledge Music campaign in the near future so the album can take a more tangible artistic representation in a collectable hot pink translucent vinyl form. Doors open for the IAM Fest at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $18 dollars each if you can track down a band member in person or $20 dollars online at the band’s website. Of course there will be an infamous “Beer Bus” or two making its way to the show too. The bus leaves the Franklin House in Valparaiso and will take you directly to the House of Blues. Tickets for the bus are $20 dollars and include a limited edition “Energy Band” free beer; and with the band’s new sponsorship from Sailor Jerry, expect some rum and cokes too. The first 40 people to buy their “Beer Bus” tickets will also receive a free bottle of beer brewed by the “Energy Commission”! For non-drinkers, if demand is sufficient there are plans to book an alcohol free bus as well. For more information, go to www.theEnergyCommission.com.

It may be the last full month of summer, but that isn’t stopping PickUps Bar and Grill in Lynwood from kicking things up a notch by throwing party after party, week after week. And with so many events planned, we had to share them all with you because after all, there’s something for everyone.

August 10th Metal Fest 2013 The 2nd Annual Metal Fest at Pick-Ups Bar and Grill is set to take place on Saturday, August 10th. This huge outdoor event will be hosted by heavy metal band Catalyst. Pick-Ups will bring out their grill and will be serving up favorites like hot dogs, hamburgers and kabobs. The fest will also feature vendors, a dunk tank and of course, performances by multiple bands. On the bill for the fest are: Winds of Sirius, Hot Dang, Leviathan’s Choir, Royal, Spinning Red, Sonic Surge, Deadlite Redemption, Approaching Dawn, Sinister Fate, Bleed for the Fallen, Wicked, Deception, and of course Catalyst. Tickets for this head banging show are $10 dollars each or six for $50 dollars if you purchase your tickets in advance; and tickets can be purchased directly through the bands. Tickets are $12 dollars at the door the day of the event. Last year’s fest drew about 200 people, and this year the crowd is expected to double.

August 17th Chi-Town Large Cars Annual Truck Show For years, hundreds of people have flocked to Pick-Ups Bar and Grill in Lynwood, Illinois for their exciting annual Semi Truck Show, and this year will be no different. The annual truck show is put on by the Chi-Town Large Cars Association and will feature trucks from all over the Midwest. The trucks come in all shapes

and sizes and are loaded with all the bells and whistles too. This show is the biggest day of the year at Pick-Ups and they will pull out all the stops. “We bring our grill outside, we’ll have bands performing and we’ll have a DJ inside the bar, said Lisa Sutton-Madrigal, Owner of Pick-Ups. “We will also have three jump houses and raffles and prizes too, so it’s fun for the whole family,” continued Sutton-Madrigal. “I’ve been here for three years now and I have really enjoyed being a part of this event. It really is so interesting seeing all those semis roll up.” The event will also be a benefit for Detective Mike Belliveau of the Riverdale Police Department, who suffered a stroke while working. Belliveau was hospitalized for two weeks at Rush University - St. Luke’s Hospital and is now disabled. Belliveau has undergone physical therapy daily for over six months and his medical expenses have caused the family financial hardship so this event will help the fifteen year veteran of the police force and his family to cope with some of their daily struggles. Truck registration starts at 9:00 am and while there is lots of tractor space, there is limited space for trailers. The doors for the show open at 2:00 pm and the party will go on all night long.

August 24th Summerfest Rain or shine, on August 24th Pick-Ups Bar and Grill will sponsor their inaugural Summerfest, an event filled with hot sounds and cool vibes. If successful, Pick-Ups would like to make Summerfest an annual affair; a musical event complete with a bean bag tournament, 50/50 raffle, door prizes, a bikini contest, a dunk tank and much more. The Jimmy Sarr Band will host, and the event will feature performances by Bad Cadillac, Steel Harbor, Dirty Trixx, One Timer and Mike Beach son a Beach, featuring Michael Choucalas. The doors open at 2:00 pm and the party will go on into the wee hours of the night. Tickets cost $10 dollars and the fest will go on rain or shine. For more information on all three events, be sure to check out PickUps Bar and Grill on Facebook. Pick-Ups Bar and Grill is located at 21000 Torrence Avenue in Lynwood, Illinois.

A union worker arrives in Vegas, and the first thing he wants to do is check out the “houses “he’s heard about and see if the ladies are getting a proper deal, according to Union practices. He goes to the first house, the Madame answers the door. “Good day”. he says. “I was wondering, if I gave you a hundred dollars for a girl, how much of that hundred would go to the house, and how much would go to the girl?” The Madame answers “80 dollars would go to the house and 20 dollars to the girl”. Being a union man, he decides that it isn’t fair, and decines the madam’s offer to enter the premesis. He goes to many such houses, and the answer is pretty well the same to his question. Then at one house he asks, the Madame tells him that 80 dollars would go to the girl, and 20 dollars would go to the house. This impresses the union man so much, he enters at her invitation, and immediately notices a beautiful blond with a beautiful body sitting on the couch. He pulls out his wallet, hands the Madame a hundred dollar bill and says” I would really like to be with that blond over there.” I’m sure you would”, replies the Madame, “ but 65 year old Edna sitting over there has seniority!”

Viva! Portage is the biggest customer appreciation event in the town of Portage, and it’s a party thousands have come to look forward to every year. And it’s right around the corner as the 4th Annual Viva! Portage celebration is set for Saturday, September 7th from 1:00 pm until 11:00 pm in the parking lot of the El Cantarito Mexican Restaurant. “The people of Portage and the surrounding areas have been really good to El Cantarito, and owners, Fernando Romo and Alfonso Fuentes, just want to show their gratitude,” said Rolando Martinez, the organizer of the event. “The restaurant loves putting on this event because it’s the best way to say thank you to all those who patronize the establishment.” And Viva! Portage is a great way for families to enjoy a day of outdoor fun at no cost. The ten hour event features everything from moonwalks, face painting and balloons for the kids, to food, beer and music for the adults. The event is truly family friendly and made big waves last year when the beer garden was expanded to include a family section. “We thought that expanding the beer garden would be a great idea because if the parents wanted to have a beer while they checked everything out they could bring their kids in with them,” explained Martinez. In addition to outdoor activities, there will be some great live entertainment inside the big top tent. The line-up for the fiesta includes Past Life, a ‘60’s, and ‘70’s band; Herencia Musical, a Latin Party Band; Marisol Y Su Orquesta Musical, a salsa band; Together, a Motown and classics band; and Mario Moreno Acoustic Sounds. Their also featuring Ballet Folklorico from Portage and East Chicago.

And there is plenty to eat and drink while you enjoy the musical entertainment. Of course there is the aforementioned family friendly beer garden, but if beer isn’t your preferred drink of choice there will be margaritas for sale as well, both inside and outside of the restaurant. The restaurant will be open so people can order drinks inside or out. Guests can also have a seat on our outdoor patio and enjoy the outdoor activities. If that sounds exciting and makes you hungry for more, you can expect El Cantarito to whip up some of its tasty dishes. And since the restaurant recently expanded their menu, you can look forward to some new and exciting dishes. “There will also be food vendors set up,” added Romo. “Some of the foods on hand will include corn on the cob as well as Mexican bakery favorites.” It may be by coincidence that this event falls right as Hispanics throughout the region and nation prepare to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month one week later. “It’s great to be celebrating our culture,” said Martinez. “The Hispanic community has grown tremendously in the past years in Porter County, especially here in Portage, so this event means so many different things for our neighbors.” Just a reminder as like last year, we will be using the on street parking across the street from El Cantarito. Portage Police will be assisting the crossing on Central Ave. Patrons of this event will not be allowed to park next door at the Peach Tree Parking lot. The Viva! Portage celebration begins at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 7th. El Cantarito Mexican Cuisine is located at 6291 Central Avenue in Portage. For more information, go to www. elcantaritocuisine.com or call 219-7621900.

When you were shopping for beer at your local grocery or liquor store or when you were out at your local bar or restaurant this summer you may have noticed a throwback bottle of Coors Banquet beer. If you were wondering whether or not your eyes were playing tricks on you – they weren’t! It turns out that the brewers of Coors products in Golden, Colorado have just unveiled a new “stubby” bottle of their Coors Banquet brew. This new bottle was inspired by packaging that was developed in the era just after the end of prohibition. The return to the stubby shape invites beer lovers to share in an experience that generations of Coors Banquet fans have loved.

Here are some interesting facts and lessons on Coors Banquet: History: - Coors Banquet beer was first introduced in April, 1873 by a young man who began brewing a pilsner-style beer in the foot hills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado. It was here in Golden that Adolph Coors developed the uniquely crisp, clean and drinkable “Mile High Taste” of Coors that has become famous among beer drinkers nation wide. - Coors is brewed with 100 percent Rocky Mountain water. All beer is 90% water, so using the best water possible in the brewing process is the key to this legendary brew. Banquet Bottle: - Coors re-introduced the 12 oz. bottle in a “stubby” shape on June 1st, 2013. - Through the end of the year, each bottle will display one of three labels that were inspired by post-Prohibition era packaging found in the Coors Banquet archives. - The Banquet Bottle will be available for purchase nationside to consumers in bars and restaurants as well as at package liquor stores in 6-pack configurations. Product Facts: - Coors Banquet beer is also available in cans, bottles and kegs. - Coors Banquet contains 142 calories per 12-ounce serving and 5% alcohol per volume. Now that we have covered all the facts, a “Suds and Cocktail” article wouldn’t be complete without a taste test – the best part of the job!! And just because we are celebrating the new bottle doesn’t mean we can’t savor the great taste of the beer. Here’s my take on Coors Banquet: - The new stubby bottle is really cool and feels great in your hand. (And yes, I did take a sip from the bottle before deciding to pour it in a pint glass for the true taste test experience.) - The appearance is what you would expect if you have had this product before; the beer has a clear pale color with a thick white head that quickly fades due to moderate carbonation. - The aroma is one of lightly roasted barley and corn. - The taste was light, with an aftertaste that had the slightest hint of hop bitterness. Overall Rating: - A great classic beer to drink, and an even better one to look at in that cool new bottle! Happy Summer Drinking!!

SPOKENFOUR By: Stephanie Vega

Spoken Four is currently one of the hottest bands in the Chicago area, playing over a hundred shows a year. A cover band that performs a wide range of music from the 1960’s to the Top 40 tunes of today, Spoken Four was formed in 2006 and the story of their creation is quite unique. The group was actually formed as a subgroup of Maggie Speaks, a popular Chicago based cover band that was performing over 170 shows annually. The members of Maggie Speaks found that they were constantly getting calls for private events when they were already booked so they decided to create another band; so auditions for the positions were held and a band was formed. Spoken Four was created. From that point, Spoken Four was off to the races, performing between 125 to140 shows a year at clubs, fests, corporate and private events, country clubs and weddings. At its inception, Spoken Four was so named because the group had four members in it at the time. But the name has since become part of a brand. After the creation of Spoken Four, the members of Maggie Speaks also formed Final Say in 2007, and the latest addition to the roster is a group called Shout Out. Therein lies the branding, because all of the groups reference some form of talking in the name, Maggie Speaks, Spoken Four, Final Say and Shout Out. All branding aside, despite the name “Spoken Four” there are actually five members in the band. The members of the band are Shannon Stevenson, male vocalist and crowd enhancer, Beccy Schneider, female vocalist and soul sister, Domingo Castillo, guitarist and band leader, Seth Adams, bass player and low end specialist and Jeff Moehle, the drummer and rhythmic cohesion specialist. The members come from all over the country too; two are from

Chicago, one is from Michigan City, one is from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and one hails all the way from Boston, Massachusetts on the east coast. And where the band will perform is as diverse as their individual backgrounds because there really are no limits to where the band will play. They play at many private events like weddings, clubs, fests and country clubs and they do a lot of shows at venues like the Navy Pier Beer Garden, at Chicago Park district summer concert series locations or at local nightclubs throughout Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. The band has also traveled to play at venues in Hawaii, Florida, and Arizona and as far away as Istanbul, Turkey and Barcelona, Spain. And just as there are no boundaries to where they will play, the group also sets no musical boundaries for their shows. “By performing a wide range of material, we can cater the show to the crowd,” said band leader Domingo Castillo. “We also try and tie songs together as mash-ups, just like a DJ would do except we do it live. We also use our Facebook page at our shows so the audience can interact with the band to make requests and get shout outs.” Spoken Four plays a wide variety of songs, including all the current tunes like “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and “Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake. “We have an extensive catalog of 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s to pull from,” said Castillo. “The whole idea is to read the crowd and keep people engaged and dancing. The element of surprise and not knowing what is coming next is one of our biggest assets.” To learn more about Spoken Four, or to stay updated on what the band has going on, visit them at www.SpokenFour.com or “like” them on FaceBook.

NWI MUSIC By: Stepahnie Vega If you haven’t heard the Head Honchos perform, you don’t know what you are missing! This rocking Blues Band with a mix of funk and soul has been together for about six years, but if you don’t recognize the band name, perhaps you will recognize the members, who have decades of experience between them. Headlining the Head Honchos is Rocco Calipari Sr. This skilled teacher of guitar has played lead guitar since 1995 and is known in the area as one of Chicago’s great contemporary blues guitarists. Rocco has played in 40 states and 12 countries around the world. But in creating the Head Honchos, Rocco decided to team up with someone he’s known his whole life; his son Rocco Jr., also a guitarist, and the two set out to compete the band. “We met our Drummer Scott Schultz and started out jamming in my garage,” said Calipari Sr., lead guitarist and lead vocalist. “Soon after that we were playing gigs.” What Schultz brings to the table is a drum playing capability rich in the artistry of percussion; his rhythmically intense approach to the drums has established quite the following among Head Honcho fans. The Head Honchos band is rounded out with Sam Cockrell on bass. The members, who hail from Valparaiso and Chicago, stand out from other bands in their category because they have something special that others don’t have, and that’s a sacred family bond. “We have a father and son both on lead guitar,” said Calipari Sr. “And because our band ranges

in ages from 25 to 55 years old, we pull from a lot of different influences.” Grounded on the foundations of American blues, rock, soul, and funk, the Head Honchos cover some of America’s most beloved bands; from famous blues artists like Buddy Guy, B.B King and Albert Collins, to soul performers like Wilson Pickett, and to rock bands like Johnny Winter, the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Robin Trower, and Meters. But they also play their own original music, introducing new and inspired songs to their appreciative fans. “We play at local bars throughout Northwest Indiana, but we also travel,” said Calipari Sr. “We are actually heading out for a small tour of Canada and New York soon. So we are used to playing for crowds of all sizes. We have played some fests with big crowds, but Tippecanoe Fest in Lafayette, Indiana and Merle Jam in Kansas City, Missouri were among the best that were up there in attendance.” And with the variety of shows they’ve performed, it’s hard to pick a favorite memory, though there is one that really sticks out to Calipari Sr. “I am thankful that I have been able to play with a lot of people over the years, and many of them I have looked up to as a guitarist,” he said. “The first song I learned on guitar was Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. And then I got to back him up at The Long Beach Blues Fest in California and play that song along with all of his hits, with him. It’s something I will never forget.” Head Honchos – what a great name! How did the guys come up with it? “My grandfather used to tell us that he was the Head Honcho at home,” said Calipari Sr. “I always thought it would be a cool name for a band, so when we put this one together it seemed like the obvious choice.” If you haven’t seen the Head Honchos perform and would like to check them out, they will be at Buddy and Pals in Winfield on Bike Night on Monday, August 5th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Then on August 24th they will be back in Lafayette for the Jazz and Blues Fest. To learn more about the Head Honchos, check out their website: www.theheadhonchosband.com or you can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HeadHonchosBand.

“New Holland exists to enhance the quality of life of our customers and team members by providing the most remarkable experience possible. We strive to discover and empower an artistic approach in all aspects of our craft.” Sounds great to me! I challenge you to try staying local and enjoying a tasty local brew every now and again. Also reach out to some of your favorite local breweries often there are tours, sampling and great parties to attend. Drinking local, this has been happening in many areas around the nation in the craft beer world. It has seemed to finally reach Indiana and surge thus taking the state by storm. Most of us are familiar with breweries like Shoreline in Michigan City, 3 Floyds in Munster, Figure 8 in Valpo, Crown in Crown Point, Bulldog in Whiting- an example of how local things can be. Yet most people don’t know that there are 55 breweries in Indiana that are registered with the “Breweries of Indiana Guild”. I’m sure there are more but brewing in very limited quantities. A great example of how things get started in the state and eventually mature, don’t get me wrong there is still much work to be done, is Cutters Brewing Co. Cutters Brewing Co. was founded in late 2010 and gained government approval to operate in May of 2011. They started as a small Nano-brewery located in Bloomington, IN and recently moved to Avon, IN in November 2012. There new brewing facility houses a 30 bbl. brew house and enough fermentation capacity to produce up to 21,000 barrels of beer yearly. The expansion allows them to be able to distribute their “Hard Working Beer” all over the Hoosier state with the same commitment and dedication they have shown in Bloomington. Best part is: two home brewing long time friends own it. Other examples are breweries in southern Michigan that is very local still. New Holland Brewing Co (Mad Hatter, Dragons Milk) started distilling spirits using its spend beer grain. Innovation and birth of success is all around Indiana and Michigan. New Holland’s mission reads:
