By: Stephanie Vega The SouthShore Railcats season is off and running. Since Opening Day, fans been flocking to the U. S. Steel Yard –in fact nearly 5,000 filled the stadium on Opening Night alone. The great weather, great food and drink specials, and the love of the game is what keeps bringing fans back to the Steel Yard. STREETSMARTS Advice on Traveling Abroad
WINO: Emmett Sinclair SMELLS LIKE: a pet store with a broken sewer pipe.
PERSONAL QUOTE: “The sun smells too loud!!!”
Heather, a professional dancer, from Portage asks: This Summer, I’m going to a dance competition in Milan. Do you have any tips for someone who has only danced for American audiences?
WINO:
Carla, an office Manager from Merrillville asks: I heard they eat a very wide variety of animals in Asia. Do you have any advice on what animals are safe to eat and which ones may make me sick?
WINO:
Meghan, a student from Hammond, asks: This summer, I’ll be traveling to Europe. I really want to hook up while I’m over there, but I heard they have different standards about how their private areas should look. Is that true?
“I feel you!!! One time, I ate ten bags of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos at a fraternity party for a pack of Doral 100’s! Two hours later… WOOF! It felt like I was trying to shit a rattlesnake with antlers!”
“Shit, you ain’t gotta go to Asia to get sick! Me and Mackie Wilson once fried a pigeon in a hubcap with baby oil. Man! I had the “bubble guts” for a damn week!”
WINO:
“Awww, shut the f**k up!!! My balls look like two eggs dropped in a tube sock, and I live in Hammond!”

STREETWALKER: Kelsey Crane TASTES LIKE: the black gum you find on a busy sidewalk. NICKNAME: “Beef n’ Cheddar”
STREETWALKER:
“I got you! One time, I got first place at one of them “booty shaking” contests. It turns out; I won, because I had a cocaine-induced seizure up on stage! At first, people were like, “CHECK OUT THE SHITTER ON THAT CRITTER!!!” That all stopped once the blood started comin’ out of my ears.”
STREETWALKER:
“I’ll tell you one thing. I ain’t never eating carp tacos from a food cart again! Those things gave me a case of the “cheese nickels” so bad; I had to shoplift a case of Pedialyte, and I was STILL pissing out of my booty three days later!”
STREETWALKER:
“Oh forget about your long balls, Emmett! My junk looks like a KFC “Double Down” that got run over by a damn mountain bike!!!”

By Rick Jensen
In 1961, Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason and George C. Scott starred in a classic black and white movie about pool called “The Hustler.” In the movie, Newman plays “Fast” Eddie Felson, an upstart pool shark who was out to dethrone “Minnesota Fats” (Gleason) as the reigning king of pool. In the film, Newman and Gleason square off in two epic matches at a famous pool hall in New York City called Ames. And when he arrives at Ames to challenge Gleason to a match for the first time Newman asks the Ames proprietor about the absence of a bar and pinball machines at the pool hall. And in what has become a famous movie quote, the Ames proprietor replies: “No bar, no pinball, no bowling alley, just pool... nothing else. This is Ames, mister.” The film has become so iconic over the years that the image that the film presented of Ames as a dank, dimly lit, smoky hole in the wall filled with pool hustlers has endured and has even become what many people commonly envision a pool hall to be like. Still, both the “The Hustler” and a 1986 sequel called the “The Color of Money” starring Newman and Charlie Sheen, are credited with sparking a resurgence of pool at a time when many pool halls across the country were closing. And that is the case in Northwest Indiana today. Many pool halls have closed and those that remain are few and far between. But there is one pool hall in the
14 NWIE n t e rta i n e r.c o m • J u LY 1 3
Region that is bucking the trend and has just opened its doors for business on Broad Street in Griffith called Griffith Billiards. But the image of Ames presented in “The Hustler” is nothing like the reality of what Griffith Billiards is like. When you walk into Griffith Billiards, you feel like you have just walked into an upscale private club on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. “We’re not a typical pool hall,” said co-owner Carl Cesare. “Griffith Billiards is a very upscale facility. All of our components are the best available, and we maintain them to the highest standards.” Griffith Billiards has a very comfortable ambience, with 17 tables available. And yes, there is a full service bar that can accommodate up to 40 people complete with darts and pinball. And if you’re hungry, John’s Pizzeria is just up the street and will deliver a pizza or sandwich. Cesare, a Homer Glen, Illinois native, and his partner, Patrick Bukiri of Orland Park, have owned a pool hall in Crestwood, Illinois called Pocket Billiards for the last ten years and have been interested in Northwest Indiana for some time. The two first looked at the old Griffith Furniture Store location as a potential Indiana location in 2008, but weren’t able to acquire the property until 2011. And since the building had been vacant for several years, extensive renovations were necessary. But as the saying goes the end justifies the means and Cesare and Bukiri have turned the building into a beautiful facility. But why here in Griffith, Indiana? “Northwest Indiana is a big pool league area and
there aren’t many pool halls here,” said Cesare. “There are a lot of players and a lot of leagues, but all the pool halls were closing. So we have had our eye on Northwest Indiana for a location for some time.” While league play is admittedly slower in the summer, the hall is currently running two night time leagues and has already hosted major tournaments. And in addition to the in-house leagues, the Northwest Indiana chapter of the American Pool Association has an office on site and hosts leagues and tournaments at the facility as well. In addition to the league play, there is a daily special available for the serious player. “We rent tables by the hour,” said Cesare. “But during the day we offer a special where a guy who wants to come in and work on his game can play from noon until 8:00 pm for $10.00.” While billiard fanatics will certainly love Griffith Billiards, the hall doesn’t just cater to serious players. It’s the perfect spot to take a date to play, or a place where friends can go to just hang out and shoot pool on the best tables around. “When it comes to pool in Northwest Indiana, we’re the guys,” said Cesare. “There aren’t too many pool halls around because they have all closed in the last eight to ten years. But here, you can play on first class equipment that’s taken care of in a great atmosphere. We keep our equipment top notch.” And with the great atmosphere, a fully stocked bar, darts and pinball, if Paul Newman were still alive today, he’d tell you that “This isn’t Ames, Mister.”

And this force to be reckoned with has tackled some pretty big shows – it’s something they take a lot of pride in. “Believe it or not in our short time together as a band we have been blessed to be able to play some pretty big shows,” the band said. “We played at this years’ Annual Midwest Smokeout event at The Horseshoe Casino. There were 1,500 plus people in attendance and that was the biggest crowd we played for so far.” The group was also honored to play at a big show held annually in downtown Hammond. “We were the first female fronted band asked to play at the Annual Beatles Fest they hold each year in downtown Hammond – that was a huge honor!” Rising Dawn has played several local bars and are slated to play a few local festivals in the next few weeks. “We will be in Star City which is about 90 miles away just outside of Lockport Indiana July 20th,” the band said. “We will also be at The Pierogi Fest July 26th and The Beatles Fest August 10th.”

Rising Dawn has been playing together since February of this year – but individually, the five members have racked up a combined total of 100 plus years of stage experience. So how did they get started? That my friend, is what they call HISTORY. “The guys were all playing in Timebomb Temple and their singer at the time decided the band scene just wasn’t for her” explained Manager Derick “Papa-D” Thompson. “With one more show left and not wanting to cancel it Arthur (our lead guitarist) contacted a singer he knew - Nekole’sfrom the old band Autumn Dawn. She agreed to fill in! After the first practice we knew this was where she was meant to be. We asked her to consider staying with us and becoming a project. She agreed and here we are today - making great music with a great group of musicians.”
Keyboardist Johns Chorney. The five are from Northwest Indiana, and offer something different to the band scene in the region. “For starters we have a very strong female vocalist,” Thompson began. “You haven’t seen a show if you haven’t seen her perform. She loves the crowd, walks in the crowd, entertains the crowd and includes them in our show. On top of the fact she has amazing talent, power and vocal range. We also have a veteran keyboard player. Not many bands in this area are able to find keyboard players. Having John, a seasoned veteran on the keys expands our list of songs we can do greatly. Together we are a force to be reckoned with.”

Going to a Rising Dawn show is like opening a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get! That’s because this band plays EVERYTHING – literally!! “We cover anything from Classic rock, Country, Pop, Dance to Alternative,” the band chimed. “We play anything from Bruno Mars to Big n Rich; Aerosmith to Rhianna; Heart to Michael Jackon; The Band Perry to Nickelback; Kings of Leon to Supertramp;the list goes on and on.”
4th Annual Mudathlon If you love a good race, and don’t mind getting dirty – then the Mudathlon is for you! The 4thAnnual Mudathlon - being held at Graeber Family Farms in Valparaiso, is a popular event that is not only sweeping the region, but running enthusiasts across the country. “Last year we had 2,700runners come out from over 24 states,” said Anna Ryan, Marketing Manager for Mudathlon. “Most of the runners came from Indiana, Illinois and Michigan; with a majority of local runners coming from Valparaiso, Chicago and Crown Point.” The Mudathlon is a one day event, on July 20th, offering an adventurous off-road run that is uniquely challenging and focused on fun from start to finish.Mudathletes will navigate a threemile course with 40 obstacles, includes the Mudslide, Cargo Net Climb, Creek Crossings and 100 foot mud pit, as well as some new obstacles to this years’ race. “Obstacles participants will have to battle through Heaping Hay Bales, a 40-foot Tunnel of Terror, and a variety of water obstacles,” said Ryan. “But new obstacles in place for this race include trenches, a spider web obstacle and one where mudathletes are horizontal with the wall.” Runners will go in 100-125 person waves - race officials are expecting a crowd over 3,000. After the race, there will be a great Post-Race party where the beer will be flowing, the brats will be smoking, and the music will be jamming. Pre-registering for the event is only $85 and includes food, one beer, a finishers medal (which doubles as a bottle opener), and giveaways like a car decal and slap-on beer can koozie. Same day registration is $100. Participants for this race must be 14 and older. To register, go to www.mudathlon.com. You can also learn a lot more on that webpage about the event. Don’t forget to visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/mudathlon and “like” them, or follow them on twitter, www.twitter. com/mudathlon.

One of the most talked about events in Northwest Indiana is back! The annual Nudes-A-Poppin’ Festival at the Ponderosa Suns Club is gearing up for another 2-days of fun in the sun, and Owner Scarlett Kincade is thrilled the event is still going strong. “We’ve been holding this festival for nearly 40 years,” she explained. “I’ve been here since the beginning, and I’ve really seen it grow. It’s such a great event and I’m so glad people keep coming back year after year.” The 2013 Nudes-A-Poppin’ Festival is taking place July 20th and 21st. On Saturday the 20th, doors open at 10am and close at 5pm and on Sunday doors open at 9am and close at 6pm. The cost is $60 per couple a day, but if you sign up to go to both days, you get a $10 discount. This 18 years and over event doesn’t serve alcohol but you are permitted to bring your own – just keep the bottles at home – cans only! Clothing is of course optional at this nudist camp. “My father started this event in the 70’s in hopes of bringing awareness to his campgrounds,” she said. “The Ponderosa Sun Club opened their doors to the public as a family nudist resort nearly 50 years ago and has really evolved over the years.” The Ponderosa Sun Club is located on 88 wooded acres and boasts a 65’ wide by 120’ long swimming pool Amenities at the camp include tennis, shuffle board and horseshoes – it’s like going to Jellystone except you don’t pack a swimsuit! But when you come out for the Nudes-A-Poppin’ Festival, you get to experience much more than

swimming and recreational sports. “We feature events like the Sexy Pole Dance Competition, the Screaming ‘O’ Contest, Ms. Nude Rising Star, Ms. Nude Galaxy Beauty Pageant, Mr. and Ms. Nude North America, and Ms. Nude Entertainer of the Year,” Kincade told me. “This year we have someone who has pre-registered for the competition coming from Canada!”
a lot of celebrities to meet as well – one celebrity who’s celebrating 30 years in a row making an appearance. “Ron Jeremy will be here on the Sunday of our event and we are so exciting to be celebrating his 30th anniversary with us – it’s hard to believe he’s been coming every year since 1983,” said Kincade. “Other celebrities include adult film actress Sunny Lane who will be here both Saturday and Sunday, Phil Varone – formerly of Skid Row now a member of the new band called Saigon Kick – who will also be there Saturday and Sunday, and then John Popper from Blues Travelers and Freak (formerly of Mancow) will be there on Sunday.” Sunny Lane will be available for pictures in her trailer, and she will also be selling her movies there which she can autograph. Ron Jeremy will be posing for photos as well. Phil Varone will have a booth set up with a line of his own adult toys as well. Also attending the event is the well- known adult industry star Tony Batman. He will host different events, do his Screaming ‘O’ Contest, and helps MC.
Pre-registration is something new to the Nudes-A-Poppin’ Festival. This year, those wanting to sign up for the various events can do so before the festival, either online or over the phone. Then the pictures of those participating in the contests will be put up on their website for all to see. “We will be updating our website on a weekly basis,” said Kincade. “This way those planning on coming to the event can see first-hand who some of the men and women are that will be taking the stage.” An estimated 4000 people come out to this event every year, and this year should be no different. As always, spectators and contests can look forward to various food vendors, shopping and body painting. “In terms of vendors, we will have your basic grilled foods, shopping for items like lingerie and motorcycle t-shirts, and we will have body painters and airbrush tattoo artists – a really array of vendors.”
If you want more information on the event, want to pre-register for a contest, or get your spectator pre-sell tickets, go to www. ponderosasunclub.com or www. nudes-a-poppin.com. You can also call (219) 345-2268. And remember, if you don’t preregister for a contest that doesn’t mean you can’t still take part! You will still be able to register when you sign in!
There will be a dance contest and

The guys at New Belgium Brewing have done it again! They’ve come up with a new brew for their year-round portfolio that has a bitter profile. It’s called Rampant Imperial IPA, and it’s causing quite the buzz at the Fort Collins based brewery. “Imperial IPA’s take hoppy beers to the next level,” New Belgium Assistant Brewmaster Grady Hull said in a written statement. “Rampant packs a powerful wallop, but it’s got the malt bill to back it up.” According to the breweries website, Rampant is a burly and bitter brew that pours a pure copper, and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosiac and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant’s finish is bone-dry.
Here’s a look at Rampant’s profile: Birthdate: February 2013 Body: Medium light body ABV: 8.5% IBU: 85 Calories: 230 Hops: Mosaic, Calypso, Centennial Malts: Pale,Black Yeast: Ale Yeast Aroma: Prominent lemon citrus and floral hop aroma and flavor including some nice dryhopped fresh grass and spicy pine notes. Mouthfeel: Warmth from alcohol is present but not conspicuous. Nice dry finish from carbonation and glass full of bitter hops. Flavor: Hint of sweetness in the background from malt, the rest is a story of ambitious but not overwheleming bitterness. Visual: Golden with solid whit foam and a slight hop sheen. My take on this IPA: Rampant has a flavor that is lemony and bright, with a touch of herbal woody quality that emerges from the hops. The finish is clean, but not overly bitter. When you drink a beer that’s 8.5%, you tend to expect something really strong that doesn’t go down the easiest. Not true with Rampant – it goes down easy and has the feeling of a beer you might enjoy having at your side on a hot summer afternoon! Rampant is available in 12 and 22 ounce bottles and on draft in most New Belgium markets.

If you like to rock out and tear up the dance floor, then you have to check out Bandboozled. This classic, current, party rock band plays a variety of music that is sure to keep you moving. The band got started four years ago with Lead Vocalist Eric Remlinger and Lead Guitarist Dan Stemper. The two had been friends for quite some time, and acquired a bassist and drummer. Recently, Eric and Dan parted ways with the original members and brought on current Bassist Scott Hicks and Drummer and Percussionist Carlos Reices. “When we heard that Scott was available (who we both knew personally and highly respected musically), I called him and he jumped in with both feet,” Eric said. “Carlos is the newest member. He played in bands with Scott in the past and Dan and I both knew him - we knew he was a monster drummer.” Each member of Bandboozled has been playing in various bands for 20-25 years. “I was with Alliance and Valhalla,” explained Eric. “Dan with Destinova and Together Suns; Scott with Metalicious, The Love Junkies and most recently History’s End; Carlos with Metalicious and B.A.M.” The guys all hail from the region, and enjoy performing where they live – two of the guys live in Cedar Lake and two live in Hobart. They practice in Cedar Lake, where they work on their song line up which includes songs by artists like Rush, Journey, Foo Fighters, Styx, Rod Stewart, Deep Purple, Bad Company, Aerosmith and Pink Floyd. “We all grew up during the “hair metal” era so there is some of that too, said Eric. “ We try to pick songs that we will continue to want to play long term but balance that thought with the question, “Can the ladies dance to this?” That’s important! If the crowd is having fun, so are we!”
band. “We were both tired of seeing so many different bands, talented as they may be, with the same 40 song set list! It’s like you could almost walk out of one club to a club next door and recite the other bands set list song for song. There are other songs,” he exclaimed. “We love to look out in the crowd and see people’s reactions when we start a song they love but haven’t heard a band around here play. We love when people come up to us and say, “I love that song. I forgot about that song!”” The guys also enjoy tackling some pretty challenging music – they seem to take the “difficult path” but it’s something they are accustomed to. “It continually pushes us to be better players,” they told me. And it doesn’t hurt that these guys have a wide range in their vocals. “Scott and I have very wide vocal ranges,” Eric said. “Where most bands around here have to use female singers to pull off a Journey song, we don’t. Both he and I are very comfortable “up there”.” The guys have played for several large crowds over the years, but perhaps their biggest was the first real show they did which was a St Patrick’s Day gig at Goodfella’s in Cedar Lake. It was their maiden voyage and all parties involved had a riot! But when it comes to their best memory – perhaps proudest moment, it comes back to shows that benefit others. “We’ve played a few benefits and that always makes us walk away feeling good,” he said. “When we can help out a good cause just by doing what we love to do – that’s a proud moment.” If you want to know where you can catch Bandboozled near you, be sure to “like” them on Facebook. Just type in Bandboozled and you’ll be notified of upcoming shows as they are added. If you’re interested in booking the band, send an email to bandboozledband@yahoo.com.
So what makes Bandboozed different than other bands in the area? Well, it’s a question that lies at the core of why Eric and Dan started this

good do you have to be to compete in this tournament? It’s a game of fun, so any and all are more than welcome. “We have people from all different types of athletic backgrounds,” said Nobles. “We have a couple of professional teams but nearly all are novice players – those looking to just have fun with their friends.”
It’s time once again to get dirty for a good cause! The Hobart Jaycee 5th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4 at the Hobart Rugby Field. All of the money raised at this event is donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Riley Children’s Hospitals Camp About Face. “Every year this event gets bigger and bigger,” said Tiffany Nobles, Community Vice President of the Hobart Jaycees. “When it got started in 2009 we had 13 teams – this year we are expecting 50 teams. The event is gaining in popularity because not only is it a lot of fun, but it supports charitable causes and that interests a lot of people.” The first day of the tournament will be pool play starting at 8:00am on Saturday. Co-ed teams of six to eight players must be on the court for each game – and at least two ladies at all times (but teams can have up to 10 members total). All players must be 18 years of age or older “The majority of our teams are 20 and 30 something’s but we really see a wide range,” said Nobles. “Last year we had a man in his 60’s playing.” The winning teams from pool play will return Sunday for a double elimination round to determine the championship team. The first and second place teams will win bragging rights and a trophy made out of Coors Light cans. So how
In addition to the tournament, there will be performances by some of the best local bands on Saturday – like The Difference - and music provided by DJ BOT on Sunday. Both days there will be a beer garden, food vendors that include Leroy’s Hot Stuff and Rosati’s Pizza, a silent auction, and new to the event this year – a “basecamp” area. “We’ve noticed that people are bringing tents, bag games, pretty much tailgating in parking area and it gave us concerns that people were hanging out by cars where people were constantly coming in and out of,” explained Nobles. “So we are fencing off an area where our teams can pop up those tents, warm up before game, and just hang out between games. Outside alcoholic beverages are not permitted.” The cost to register a team is $150 and registration forms must be sent no later than July 15th. Teams are given the option of an a.m. or p.m. start time, time slots are assigned in the order in which the registrations are received and are not guaranteed. For more information on registering your team visit HobartJaycees.com, Facebook.com/ HobartJayceesMudVolleyball, or email the Jaycees Community Vice President, Tiffany Nobles, at Community@HobartJaycees.com.

The Ins and Outs of Beer Culture by: AP This time of year in the beer world is “festival season”, my favorite time to be involved in the beer biz. What a great time to get out (mostly during the day) and try some of your favorite beers and beers you’ve been meaning to get to. I hear a lot of people complain and say: “tickets are $40, no way I’m going to that!” Yet, when you stop and think about it, it’s really worth it. For the amount of beer you could basically handle for 4 to 5 hours plus a great time with friends it’s a no brainer for me. These festivals are happening almost every Saturday somewhere in Indiana and Southern Michigan. You never really know what to expect when you are on the other side of the beer table. I’ve seen it all, the beer geek that must take notes after every sip, the funny guy dressed like “Indiana Jones” that I see at every fest across the state, there are ones that dress up like a “Star Wars” conventions in town. My point is you can make the event whatever you
want it to be, you can also be whoever you want to be too. So this summer round up your friends get some tickets and check out something new during a Saturday. You might want to check out surrounding bars in the area too, I’m seeing more and more events after a Festival. An example would be: some of the surrounding bars at the Valpo Beer Fest, please be advised “PACE YOURSELF” would be the words of the day. The idea is to extend the experience and usually the surrounding bars/ restaurants will have some great product on draft and bottle that they would normally not carry. ASK QUESTIONS!! If you really love a beer and would like to know more about it, that’s what we are there for! Ask, ask away please, even ask us where you can find your favorite beer, and remember we are the experts of our breweries.
Suds & Cheers till next month friends!!
