The Ins and Outs of Beer Culture By: AP
Experience & Taste Craft Beer Dissecting a beer and being critical is what every good craft drinker lives for. Yet, the great thing about beer is everyone can be a critic and there are very few experts among your group of friends. One of my favorite parts about this industry is beer at its finest is a piece of art. Think about how you look at a painting, drawing or anything else you might critique, it’s subjective. The only difference is that great beer can offer the experience that surrounds a great memory. Whether its enjoyed with friends or you can tell a story about a beer that changed you forever just like the first time you heard that song. The song that jars memories, a season, or a great event you attended. All this can be said about a great beer. I believe this can be said for a beer that you had that one time last fall and you can’t wait until it’s released again. What’s great is we are not all surrounded by pieces of art everyday at a museum, but my museums encompass liquid based art and everyone can be a critic, to me that’s one of the coolest feelings in the world. Ever had a Corona on vacation? It’s probably the best tasting beer you’ve ever had! Its not only the liquid but the experience that surrounds it, so next time you are at home or your favorite local hang out, treat yourself better. You deserve it. Try that beer you’ve been thinking about trying evaluate it and the experience. Take your time and indulge. Take time and enjoy your beer with some small guidelines to better appreciate and evaluate what’s happening with every sip. Here are a few to get you started and better help your experience.
Aroma Floral, hoppy, fruity and so on Head Head is not bad! It’s what gives the aroma Color Dark, Light, Amber, Golden etc. Carbonation Is it very active? Is it very mellow? Body & Mouth feel Grainy, Yeasty, Cloudy or clear? Flavor Nutty, Malty, Caramel, Burnt, Sour or Sweet Alcohol Warming, drinkability Suds and Cheers till next month friends!!

Matey’s owner Bill Bailey donates all the food that is given out to the riders, and then the bar receives a variety of donations from local businesses for the raffle. All proceeds made from the event, as well as raffle tickets are donated to The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders. The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders, Inc. was incorporated in October 2006 in the State of Indiana as a non-profit organization. “The Patriot Guard Riders are the ones who bring our boys home,” said Cheri. “When our troops come home from serving overseas, the Patriot Guard escort them home. So this event that we have helps provide this non-profit with the funds they need to help our men and women who fight for our country.”
Riders, Start Your Engines! The 2nd Annual Patriot
Guard Poker Run/Benefit is taking place on Sunday, June 23. Matey’s Irish Pub and Grill, located at 419 N. Grant Street in Crown Point is hosting this event once again, and event organizer Cheri is excited for this fun filled day. “We did this event for the first time last year and had a great turnout, over 100 riders,” she said. “We are hoping to have even more this year, and it will go on rain or shine.”
Sign-ups for the Patriot Guard Poker Run/Benefit start at 10am on June 23. The last bike can go out at noon, and the last bike must be in by 4pm. Cost for the event is $15 for singles, $25 for couples. Cars are also welcome. For more information, call 219.663.8155 or check them out on Facebook, Matey’s Irish Pub and Grill. The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders, Inc. was formed to honor the military and to have accountability in conducting their finances. Although there are organizations similar, with similar mission statements, the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders focus on those that are Hoosiers, but would never turn their backs on any veteran or military person regardless of locale.
The 100-150 mile run starts at Matey’s in Crown Point and will go east and south. Along the way, riders will stop at different bars participating in the event and in the end will make their way back to Mateys. “When they get back to our bar the fun continues,” Cheri said. “We will food and entertainment, as well as a variety of raffle baskets.”

The Track Lounge, located at 318 North Jackson Street in Crown Point is one of the oldest bars still in operation in Lake County. Opening before the prohibition, The Track Lounge was issued the first liquor license in 1903. Its richness in history is what attracted Richard and Caroline Siegel to purchase the bar in 2009. Since they’ve become the owners, the Siegels have remodeled the inside completely from the ground up - including a new horseshoe bar that has doubled the seating. “We pride ourselves in giving our customers the best service and a comfortable atmosphere that makes customers feel at home,” they said. “It is a neighborhood bar where friends meet up to relax and enjoy themselves. We have live bands every Friday with many drink and food specials daily. We still make our hamburgers by hand and cooked made to order and charbroiled.” With summer around the corner, the Track Lounge is excited to announce some of the events they will be hosting at their bar. For starters, here’s a look at the live entertainment they will have every Friday in June.
June 7- The Robots June 14- Bad Cadillac June 21- Jam Night June 28- Flashpoint Then if you want to catch the men and women of Track Lounge, you can see them at the 4th of July parade in Crown Point. They will be there waiving to spectators, and handing out a variety of giveaways, including Koozies. And if you are interested in playing some golf, the Track Lounge invites you to take part in the 3rd Annual Track Lounge Golf Outing Benefiting the Orak Shriners Transportation Fund. The golf outing is scheduled for July 20th. For more information, call 219.663.9838. The Track Lounge is open from 7:30 am to 3am and the kitchen is open from 12pm to 8pm – on Friday and Saturday until midnight. To keep up with all the happenings at the Track Lounge, be sure to like them on Facebook www.facebook.com/The-Track-Lounge.

ToMMY B’s
By: Rosemarie Stevens
When it came to opening a new restaurant, owners Barb Sexton, Tom McDermott, and Sam and Kathy Werkema knew they wanted a place that offered great food with an island theme. So they found two perfect locations, and chose the perfect island name – Tommy B’s. “We have a location in Valparaiso and one in Hobart,” said Sexton. “And we choose the two spots because of the history each had.”
Their Hobart location is known as Tommy B’s Steakhouse and Lounge, located at 3700 Montgomery Street. If that address sounds familiar – it should! It used to be the Old Country Lounge, a well-known restaurant rich in history and reputation. “We just opened that location in May,” explained Sexton. “It’s 21 and over but we only smoking at the bar – there’s no smoking in the dining room.” Their second location is known as Tommy B’s Steakhouse and Grill and is located at 13 E. Lincolnway. With a location in the heart of downtown Valparaiso, this hot spot is sure to draw in the crowds of those taking a stroll of the beautiful and picturesque downtown. “We have always loved downtown Valpo so we knew we wanted to open a location there,” Sexton said. “Our Valpo location is completely non-smoking and offers family dining. We opened St. Patrick’s Day weekend and have been enjoying the crowds we’ve been seeing.” Both locations offer upscale dining with a laid back, friendly atmosphere. Upon walking into either location, you’ll love the true island theme the restaurants offer – bright blues, oranges and gold’s can be seen throughout the restaurant, on the walls and the tables. “We redesigned both locations to look similar, with a kinetic color scheme,” said Sexton. “All four of us owners have many years of experience in the industry so we knew exactly what we wanted.” And what they also they wanted was an impressive menu with only the finest selections. “The owners and management
put together this creative menu – it was a meeting of the minds,” said Sexton. “And our executive chef and sous chef have culinary degrees with honors – each with many years’ experience in upscale dining. They have worked at four star restaurants from Chicago to Indianapolis ad have very creative minds.” So what kind of menu did this meeting of the minds put together? Well, simply the best! “We have 21 day fresh cut angus beef tenderloin, sword fish, and fresh rolled sushi,” Sexton explained. “Our fresh fish is delivered daily and our sushi is fresh and made to order. Every day we offer specials based on chef selections of the day.” Specializing in steak and seafood, Tommy B’s offers its customers a great selection, and they are open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner. Both locations are open from Sunday through Saturday from 11:30am-close, with their kitchen closing at 9pm Sunday through Wednesday and at 10pm Thursday through Saturday. Tommy B’s offers drink specials every day, and from 3pm to 6pm at the bar only on Sunday through Thursday offer half price appetizers.“We have an awesome cucumber martini along with an extensive martini and wine list you won’t find anywhere else,” the owners boasted. “All the drinks are hand crafted and made to order, whatever flavor or combination they want, we’ll serve.” And if you’re looking for live entertainment, you’re in luck – Tommy B’s bring in either acoustic jazz, light rock or piano to their establishment on Friday or Saturday nights. Another great thing Tommy B’s offers – especially since the weather is warm and beautiful is outdoor seating. At the Hobart location, hey have a covered patio with five tables, and in Valpo they have four tables outside on the square. To learn more about Tommy B’s, be sure to like them on Facebook. All of their events and entertainment schedule will be posted.

219 ANNIVERSARY It’s been one year since the 219 Sports Bar and Grill in Lake Station opened their doors. This sports bar offers up premiere entertainment in Northwest Indiana, and provides a club like atmosphere for those looking to dance the night away and not make the trek to Chicago. Located at 2415 Rush Street, the 219 has been providing the area with a great place to party and to celebrate their one year anniversary, the club did just that.
219 is going to continue celebrating their anniversary with another event that they are planning which is near and dear to Yanez. “On June 22nd we will have the 2nd Annual Daniel Chavez Memorial,” he said. “Chavez was one of my best friends who died in the military. This event honors him and also raises money for a local scholarship we started.” The Daniel Chavez Memorial Fund is a scholarship created last year by Chavez’s parent ,Kathy and Marciano Chavez, and benefits one student from Lake Station Edison High School. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must be an athlete and have a GPA of 3.5. These specific requirements were chosen because Chavez was an athlete and honors student at Edison High School. Yanez is grateful to be able to host and support this event. “This is a great way to remember my friend, and the sacrifice he made for our country,” said Yanez.
On Saturday, May 18th 219 held a one-year celebration to thank their patrons for one year of service. “We were going to have a big two-day party, but because of permits and a parking situation, we were only able to have one day to celebrate,” said Owner Danny Yanez. “So we just had a great big party inside that lasted all day long.” Doors opened at 2pm and guests were invited in to enjoy a party complete with food, drinks, promotional giveaways like t-shirts, sunglasses, hats and of course drink samples. They had a DJ spinning all day and night, and kept the party moving until 3 in the morning. “Throughout the whole day we probably rotated about 400 people,” said Yanez. “It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary.”
This event takes place from noon to 9pm at 219 Sports Bar and Grill and will take place on their great outdoor patio. Those who come will enjoy a pig roast, music from a DJ and live entertainer, and take part in a bags tournament. “We had about 200 people last year and we are hoping for a bigger turnout,” said Yanez. “This event will take place rain or shine so we hope to see a lot of people there!”
But because their 2-day festivities got cut down to one, Yanez is excited to announce that the celebration will continue in June. That’s right, the

Mannix Martinez & A Tribute to the Legends is a band with something to celebrate! They’ve hit their 5 year anniversary and they are excited to share the news. This band performs a variety of styles of music – everything from Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Cumbia, Guaracha and Cha,cha, cha all the way to the beautiful romantic Boleros, Soul, Classic Rock and R&B. The star of the group, Mannix Martinez was born in Puerto Rico, and has been performing for over 40 years. In 2007, he was invited
to perform at the Puerto Rican Day Parade in Chicago as a soloist, but what happened changed the course of this great performer. “We came out here for the parade but I wanted to stay in Chicago for a few more days and the rest is history” said Yvonne Curet, wife of Martinez. “Then in January 2008 I started to put a band together in Chicago with Robert Serrano – bass player and backup vocalist and we started rehearsing as Mannix Martinez & A Tribute to the Legends”.

They came up with the name for the group because the band played music by legends, and the leader himself is a legend. “Mannix has many recordings with La Sonora Ponceña as well as La Terrifica from the early 80’s and also recorded for a big band songs of La Sonora Matancera,” said Curet. “And then since I have a strong repertoire of Celia Cruz and our son Jeffrey sings Hector Lavoe, we decided to add A Tribute to the Legends to the name.”
Summer Fest & Chicago Summer Dance,” said Curet. “But perhaps the best memory that has dug into our hearts has to be Rumba. The love and respect we received from everyone there starting with Edwin Rios, owner and Wo, the Coordinator and all the staff. They loved us and always expressed it. We went there to do a favor for them because the band that was supposed to play that weekend called off at the last minute and when Edwin heard us he told us he was blown away. From that day on, we were there to stay.”
So the group plays songs from legends like Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, La Lupe, Etta James, Donna Summer, and Michael Jackson to name a few. The band takes this legendary show on the road to events like weddings, Quinceñeras, corporate and private events, festivals, birthdays and even small family gatherings at home. And what makes this band different than others in the area is the fact that they are a family band. “We are three singers (Mannix, myself and our son Jeffrey) that have a strong discipline in connecting our vocals. Our harmony always has received great compliments from everyone,” said Curet. “At home we rehearse all the time. It’s part of our life. We do this in respect to our audience to present only the best all the time.”
So here’s a complete rundown of the members of Mannix Martinez & A Tribute to the Legends: Mannix Martinez - Singer, backing vocalist & musical director Yvonne Curet - Singer, back vocalist, manager, coordinator Jeffrey Martinez Singer, back vocalist, Timbalero, Bongo rhythm Robert Serrano - Bass player, backing vocalist, music arranger Anibal Campos - Piano player Marcelo Castro - 1st Trumpet Mark Roller - 2nd Trumpet Victor Gonzalez - Conguero You can catch the band performing at The Puerto Rican Parade in Aurora on July 28th. And they present their best at all times, no matter where the venue! The band has performed at: Chicago Summer Fest, Puerto Rican Parade of East Chicago, a Taste of East Chicago, Navy Pier and the Cubby Bear to name a few. “The biggest crowd we’ve played in front of is the Chicago

When the weather is warm, we all go reaching for an ice cold beverage. For some, it’s their favorite go to beer – for others it’s something a little fruity and frozen. But then there’s some looking for a combination of both – a fruity beverage that’s as refreshing as a brewski. If that sounds like something you’re looking for, then Crispin ciders may be exactly what you desire.
Crispin ciders are crisp, clean and classically refined. True to the apple, Crispin Hard Ciders are naturally fermented in the USA from fresh pressed apple juice, not from apple juice concentrate. The juice comes from a premium blend of US West Coast apples with no added malt, grape wine or spirit alcohol. It’s just a unique cider that contains no added colorants, sorbate or benzoate preservative – and its gluten free for the wheat-intolerant person. The Crispin ciders come in a variety of flavors, but the one we are focusing on this month is the good ole’ original! The cider looks beautiful in its clear bottle with blue label. When you pour the cider in a glass, you get to see its true golden color come out with a white head. And while you pour, you can’t help but breathe in the amazing aroma of apples – MMMMMM. It had me hoping that it tasted as good as it smelled. Boy was I not disappointed. As an avid apple eater and apple juice drinker, this cider tasted like everything I wished for. It was indeed crisp, clean and oh so refreshing. The guys over at Tenth and Blake Beer Co. – MillerCoors sure didn’t disappoint with this cider, and it’s something I will definitely recommend to my friends. It’s a drink you’ll want to choose on a warm summer day and a cool summer night. And if you are felling adventurous – experiment with some mixology! Try serving your Crispin Original over ice with different beers like Blue Moon, Killian’s or Summer Shandy. It’s sure to be a hit at your next party!

NWI BAR
Northwoods has been a staple of the St. John community for nearly a decade. Its log cabin and comfort food has brought people back again and again. In March, the restaurant and bar was taken under new ownership by Rallis, an Illinois native who’s owned a number of nightclubs and bars over the decades. His goal for this place was simple - bring it back to the way it used to be. “Back in the day, Northwoods would be at full capacity, with people waiting outside the door to get in,” said Pete G., promoter for Northwoods. “So we strive to bring back the days of a jam packed establishment.”
because they are so popular here in Northwest Indiana and they all seem to have such a big following. We’d like the format of the bands that perform here to be ones that focus on dance music – old school and new school.” And with all the entertainment they’re going to be offering, they are also going to have special nights for those looking for a particular crowd to hang out with. “We are going to have a college night every Wednesday and Thursday where all drinks will be half price and most shots will be half price,” said General Manager Randy Peña. “We’re looking to do a ladies night possibly on Sunday night and we’re talking about doing a country night. We have a lot of big things planned for the new Northwoods, we are just going to take it one at a time.”
So what are they doing to bring Northwoods back to its glory days? For starters, they are rebuilding the menu and reestablishing the food with their new four star chef Jim Sacketos. After all they didn’t want to change the whole menu, they just wanted to expand it and feature nightly specials. “We are still sticking with our staples, like our pot roast and chicken and dumplings, but we are adding a lot of our homemade specialties like sauces, gravies, and soups,” said Sacketos. “We’ll be offering Fish specials on Wednesday and Friday, a Pasta Night on Tuesday, and homemade pizza night on Thursday and Sunday. We will also feature steaks and chops on the menu.”
While they don’t want to let everyone know of all the events they are planning, they do want to share that they have a couple of fests brewing in the upcoming months, as well as bringing in some acoustic bands or duets to play around the pond that wraps around the back of this establishment. And if you are looking to take the whole family out to dinner, Northwoods offers a great special for the little ones! On Sundays and Tuesdays - after 4pm kids eat for $.99 with the purchase of an adult entrée.
The new Northwoods – which they are currently calling it until they formally change the name to the Woods Bar and Restaurant – is excited to unveil their plans for entertainment. They are keeping some of the current nights, but adding some new stuff that bar goers will really look forward to. “We are going to have DJ Tommy C every Wednesday night and then on Thursday we will rotate DJ’s,” said Pete. “Then we will have live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. I’d like to bring in more local bands
Northwoods has a good variety of liquor, a large selection of craft and domestic brew on tap, and a wide selection of domestic beer bottles. If you want to know more about what’s going on at Northwoods, their specials and just general information, follow them on Facebook or at their website, www.northwoodsdining. com.

never know what you’re going to get with them. “We are always striving to incorporate new elements and instrumentation into our performances,” they explained. “You never know—you may see us adding a violin, keyboard, or pan flute to our show in the future!”
If you are looking for a super fun band that brings a unique sound, then you have got to check out Shadynasty. Shadynasty is a male/female acousticelectric duo who really stand out amongst other acoustic acts because they incorporate a lot of technology into their performances. “It really comes together with a unique sound different than just two people playing guitars and singing songs; some people can’t believe that only two people can sound like a full band, but we pull it off,” said James Saqui lead guitarist, amongst other things of this duo. “We aim to impress!”
And the fact that this duo sounds like a four-piece brand is pretty impressive. They say they get inspiration from other electronic duos, and enjoy playing a mix of classic and contemporary rock, pop, and country - plus some golden oldies that they pull out if need be. “One thing that we do well, and which is different than other regional bands of our ilk, is a lot of modern top 40 country, e.g. Sugarland, The Band Perry, Carrie Underwood, etc. We make those songs our own while staying true to the originals.”
James, along with Sarah Archer Biggs – lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist have been playing in the NWI area for several years. They started off as two solo acts, but when they met at an open mic night in the Fall of 2009, things changed. “We kept in touch and officially decided to join forces this past Fall,” said Sarah Archer Biggs. “We started performing our first shows as Shadynasty in October 012 and have been playing out in The Region and beyond at least once a week ever since!”
Shadynasty will perform for any group size – large or small – and just love seeing their fans come out and support them! “Sometimes it’s hard to see just how big the crowd is from the stage (we like our flashy lights) but there have been some sizable crowds that we were excited to see,” they said. “We have recently played at Martinis in Valparaiso and Three Monkeys Pub in Crown Point, both of those are larger venues and they were just packed when we looked out into the crowd. The more we play out, our following gets larger and larger.”
So how did the two of them come up with the name Shadynasty? Well according to the duo, it was inspired by the FX comedy series of which they are both big fans of – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “There was an episode in which Frank (played by Danny Devito) and his brother Gino recount the tale of the jazz club they had owned in the 60s and 70s called “Shadynasty.” It is actually pronounced “Sha-Dynasty,” but everyone mispronounces it as “Shady-Nasty,” which is the joke,” explained Saqui and Biggs. “So that’s what most people call us, until they hear the correct pronunciation. We find it hilarious.”
Want to catch a live show? Well, Shadynasty have several shows lined up, but some of their shows in the Region include Cronies in Kouts on June 29, White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point on July 20, and The Quest Sprits and Eatery in Schererville on July 30. They also have appearances coming up in Rensselaer, Monticello, Winamac, Royal Center, Star City, and Lafayette. If you want to know more about their upcoming shows, be sure to like them on Facebook, facebook.com/shadynasty13.
Hilarious indeed- this reporter totally called thought it was pronounced Shady Nasty – oops! These jokesters bring their great personality on stage with them when they perform, and because they are so diverse you
