STREETSMARTS
STREETWALKER: Patty Kahn TASTES LIKE: a handful or rodeo dirt. NICKNAME: “8 Seconds”
STREETWALKER: “I love flea markets! Some days a girl needs a case of expired Midol and Chinese throwing stars, but doesn’t wanna make two stops!”
STREETWALKER: “You wanna kill crows, but you don’t wanna use a gun!? That’s like f***ing in a canoe… unsatisfying.”
STREETWALKER: “Speaking of losing weight, I gotta stop accepting loose change for my services. This fanny pack is getting so heavy, it’s throwing my hips out!”
Created by: Sam Mechling
Getting Ready for Spring
Wanda, a nurse’s assistant from Hobart asks: I’ve heard flea markets are a great place to buy potted plants for Spring. What do you think of them?
Jim, a business owner from Portage, asks: I have crows in my garden and I want to get rid of them humanely without resorting to firearms. Do you have any advice?
Sharon, a photographer from Highland, asks: I have a Spring wedding, and I need to lose 10 pounds. What’s the quickest way to do it?

WINO: Billy Wagner SMELLS LIKE: a Manhattan stirred with a cat litter scoop. PERSONAL QUOTE: “That girl’s got a punchable butt!”
WINO: “Flea markets!? That’s where I get my all my free kittens. Unless YOU can think of a better way to feel like a giant who’s being attacked by 30 fluffy tigers!”
WINO: “Come grab some of my kittens! I had no idea they turned into cats and now they’re organizing a mutiny! HELP!”
WINO: “Shit, I got bitten by a Brown Recluse spider and they had to cut my foot off. That’s 5 pounds right there!”

MUSIC Earlier this year, we introduced our readers to The Energy Commission – a 9 member band that’s “more than just a band”. They’ve headlined a number of major venues including the Double Door, Cubby Bear and the House of Blues. Now they will be able to cross another legendary venue off their list – Chicago’s Metro! “We are headlining the Metro May 17th and we are pumped,” said Clinton Worthington, Fine Artist with the Energy Commission. “We’ve had our sights on the Metro for a while and I’ve been there as a fan many times myself. Everyone from The White Stripes and No Doubt to Wu Tang and Bob Dylan have played the Metro. Each time our “Commissioners” help us take a step forward in to bigger and better venues and we’re getting closer to playing those larger outdoor festivals.”
Energy Commission but can get a little taste via our newest video. We released the video on what the Farmer’s Almanac calls the full “Pink Moon” and it really aims to cover the wide scope of our creativity.”
The Energy Commission will tell you their fans “Are the Show”. At the Metro they’ll debut their pink helmet cam for one of their “Commissioners” to wear and go wild at the show. Hot pink is the band’s signature color – in fact it’s their mantra! “Think Pink! People love wearing it to our shows,” founder Jay Weinberg said. “People need to “E”xperience the
Doors open for the show at the Metro at 8PM. Tickets cost $10 at the door and the Energy Commission will be selling tickets through their beer bus for $28 online. For more information, go to www. theEnergyCommission com
When playing in Chicago they charter “Beer Buses” that leave from the Franklin House in Valparaiso. Fans ride together and get hyped up for the show. “This will be the first time we unveil the “Carnival” at the Franklin House so people need to show up around 8.” said Worthington. “We will have four buses heading to the Metro, but this is the first show that will offer a bus that doesn’t have beer for our underage fans. The show is 18 and up, so we want to be able to bring those fans with us.” Weinberg adds, “You can come on a stranger but you will leave a friend!”

By: Stephanie Vega If you love pizza and wings, you have to try Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza in Schererville. Boston’s is a restaurant like no other – featuring many unique traits that set it apart from other dining venues. For them, it’s all about the food, the people and the heritage. “Boston’s is a fullservice, pizza-themed, casual dining restaurant and sports bar offering incredible gourmet pizzas and gourmet pasta, along with a wide variety of other great dishes, such as wings, ribs, burgers, entree size salads, sandwiches and the most delicious and fresh kid’s menu in the casual dining category,” explained Melissa Genovese, Bartender at Boston’s. “Boston’s offers a contemporary, sit-down family dining atmosphere with a separate sports bar customized with local team memorabilia. The result is a fun, high-energy setting for families and sports enthusiasts alike.” This casual dining restaurant is located right off of U.S. 41 and Route 30. The restaurant opened their doors about 7 years ago and chose the location because it’s located in such a high traffic area. “It really is the perfect spot to be,” said Genovese. “With all of the shopping and businesses surrounding it, it’s truly a great place to come in and relax and enjoy some great food after a busy day.” So what’s on the menu? Well, for starters you can always try Boston’s Famous Wings, tossed in flavors like Creamy Buffalo, Garlic Parmesan or their new Ragin’ Cajun. Other popular starters include their Southwest Ravioli, Nachos and Cheese Fries, but they also have new items like a Garlic Twist Bread and Loaded Cactus Cuts. Now to choose your meal! Some of the more popular dishes are the BBQ Chicken Pizza, Buffalo Chicken Pizza, Spicy Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo, and the Asian Glazed Salmon. For those looking for something a little lighter, they offer a great selection of salads and sandwiches. And if you’re looking for a special at Boston’s – you’re in luck! “We have daily lunch specials that change every day but we also have our $5.99 lunch menu including 8 menu items which could be considered a steal (Mon- Fri 11-4),” said Genovese. “We also have some of our favorite pizzas in an Individual size for only $5.” And if you have the whole family in tow – Boston’s offers some great family dining. “We offer family dining completely separate from the bar

TVs will be on the patio so you can watch your favorite sports team.” Boston’s offers a service industry program on Wednesday and all you have to do is show that you work in customer service and you will receive a card which is good for 25% off your bill for you and three of your friends. Wednesday is a great night to be at Boston’s as they also have Trivia. “We start at 7:30 and it’s free to play,” she said. “You can have a team up to 8 people. 1st place team receives a $25 gift card for Boston’s and the 2nd place team receives a $10 Gift card. On July 1st of 2012, the state passed some strict laws regarding smoking in public places. One of the hardest industries hit was food services. Restaurants who also served as bars were going to have to undergo major changes if they wanted to be classified as a restaurant and as a bar. One of those places affected was Sheffield’s. “Our Merrillville location really didn’t have a choice, we couldn’t meet the requirements of having separate kitchens, bathrooms, and a separate address,” said owners Phil Holub. “But at our Dyer location we knew we had a shot, so my partner Don Reed was adamant on making it happen and accommodating our smoking crowd.”
Campaign
The owners met with excise officers to go through the inspection process, dealt with the town on obtaining another business license, and met with the health department on getting another food license. It took about nine months, but the bar was finally able to have the best of both worlds. “On April 17th, we went through our final inspections and were able to open a separate area for our 21 and over crowd,” said Holub. “The sports bar has a three way liquor license, and can seat about 140 people.”
So now there’s Sheffield’s Sports Bar, located at 1027 Sheffield, and Sheffield’s Restaurant, located at 1025 Sheffield. This new set up offers patrons the best of both worlds – restaurant goers can pop over to the bar for a drink and a smoke and bar patrons can enjoy all the food offered next door without leaving the bar. “If someone wants to catch the game but wants to have a full service dinner they can do so,” said Holub. “And it’s really great for bar goers because they get to take advantage of our restaurant specials like Friday night all you can eat Baby Back Ribs for $15.95 and Saturday night all you can eat Prime Rib for $19.95. What other bar can you go to and watch a game while eating all you can eat ribs and prime rib?” Sheffield’s Sports bar has 13 TV’s and offers up all the local games. They offer daily drink specials, half price appetizers from 3:00pm7:00pm – as well as late night appetizers from 9:00pm-2:00am on the weekends. Sheffield’s is open from 11:00am until midnight on Sunday and Monday, and from 11:00am to 3:00am Tuesday through Saturday.

Orquesta Iluziones is a high energy Salsa Orchestra born in 2002 as a seven piece group without a horn section. It was a dream come true for Manager, Vocalist and Percussionist Luis Flores who grew up loving music. “The rhythmic sound of salsa has always been a constant in my upbringing,” he said. “It’s a different vibe when you are on stage performing and watching the people enjoy what I love, salsa!”
fact, it’s the camaraderie between the guys that make them so successful.“Our members are the performance as a whole and not a bunch of individualistic members,” said Flores. “We work together as a unit and that’s why we work!” The group performs all around the region, playing at places like Club 83 in Merrillville and 219 Bar and Grill in Lake Station. They also perform at theSky Lounge in Mishawaka. Flores believes that what makes his band different than others in the area is the energy, swing and sabor that they have, and the music they perform plays a role. “Currently we play salsa artists from back in the day when salsa was salsa,” he said. “So when you come to our show, you’ll hear us playing some of the best from Hector Lavoe, Gran Combo, Frankie Ruiz, Joe Arroyo, Tommy Olivencia, Bobby Valintine, Oscar Deleon and much more.”
During their early years, as with any other band, the guys had to prove themselves worthy of becoming part of the salsa community. Many of the band members were already familiar with the challenges that were going to face. “I learned much from them and how important tenacity and pressing forward regardless of the obstacles we had to face,” said Flores. “Members leaving, members coming back, missing practices, practicing late into the night, everyone has an agenda, but in the end our performance had to go on without a glitch.”
Over the past 11 years, the band has played a variety of venues, and the largest crowd they played for was in Indianapolis when they opened for Puerto Rican Power at the Fiesta Latino. It was a crowd of 30,000 and Luis will never forget it. In fact, when he asked his best memory, perhaps proudest moment- he replied with a not so surprising answer. “All our gigs are great memories, because after the last song we play, our fans are always asking for more,” he said. “It’s those moments that are the proudest, and it’s why not one particular event sticks out more than another. We love what we do, and when you have that kind of love, every gig is a great memory.”
The current lineup for Orquesta Iluziones - which is now 13 members - consists of the following: MoiseTuerro - Band Director/Pianist Frank Plaza/Bassist Juvino Rodriguez/Vocals Hiram Rosa/Vocals David Rodriguez/Volcals and Bongos David Arroyo/Congas Everado Rey/Timbales Carlos Aquino/1st Trumpet and Director Mark Roller/2nd Trumpet Richard Watson/ 1st Trombone Tony Herria/2nd Trombone Luis Flores/Manager, Vocals and percussionist Hector Flores/Assistant Manager
Bringing the sound they cherish is their only desire, and they appreciate the ones before them. They hope that they have given those that come after them the foundation to continue the legacy of the hottest sound that brings “fire and desire” to their whole being. The motto of Luis “Don’t give up on your dreams because we are still living ours.” If you want to learn more about the band, check them out on Facebook at Orquesta Iluziones or feel free to send Luis an email at libra2162@gmail.com.
The members of Orquesta Iluziones are from Gary, Chicago and South Bend and work together like a well-oiled machine. In

The Gary South Shore Railcats Are Back!! by: RoseMarie Stephens
The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting warmer. It’s a great feeling for those of us in the region who’ve been trying to cope with the blast of crazy weather Mother Nature has given us lately. Many of us are longing to spend time outdoors with our family and friends, and what better way to do so then attending a baseball game. The Gary SouthShore RailCats, Northwest Indiana’s only professional sports franchise, takes to the field for their Opening Day on Thursday, May 16th. This mark the 11th season the team has been playing at the U.S. Steel Yard, and fans are in for a treat! “We are really excited to be back,” said Natalie Kirby, Director of Marketing and Promotions for the RailCats. “For Opening Day, we will have our magnet giveaway for all fans as well as our fireworks display.” This year, they are pulling out all the stops to celebrate the RailCats opening weekend, offering fans four nights of nonstop entertainment. “On Friday the 17th, we’ll have The Burning Man, as well as a firework show,” said Kirby. “Then Saturday is Heroes Night. All serving veterans, as well as first responders get in for $5 with a valid ID.” Also on Saturday the 18th, the RailCats will be running their baseball hat promotion for the first 1,000 fans. Want to know what other exciting promotions the RailCats have to offer? Here’s a look at the rest of their schedule for May and for June. May 21 – Kids Day 22 – Kids Day 27 – Memorial Day June 7 – Prom Night / Fireworks* 8 – Where’s Waldo Night/ Yowie Rally Towel 1,000 fans 9 – Bark in the Park 20 – Halloween Night 21 – Circus Night / Fun Circus Appearance/Fireworks* 22 – Treasure Hunt Night / Jute Bag Giveaway 1,000 adults 25 – Youth and Senior Day 28 – Faith and Family Night / Stadium Sleepover / Reptile Show / Fireworks * 29 – I Need a Hug Night / Slap Watch Giveaway 1,000 kids 30 – Cat Craze Night *promotional schedule may be subject to change
That deal makes going out with the family a whole lot cheaper! Another way to save some money this year at the ballpark is by getting a group of just 10 together to attend a game. In past, group tickets were for those 20 or more, but this season it got changed to just 10 or more. “Tickets for groups of 10 or more are $9 for box seating, $8 for reserved seating and $4 for seating in the outfield terrace ($6 for games Friday through Sunday),”said Kirby. With RailCats group discount rates, the more people you gather, the more you save! And if you have a really big group – from your company or for a party, well the Steel Yard can accommodate that as well. “The most popular group option at U.S. Steel Yard, are our three party decks,” explained Kirby. “The party decks are located on the First and Third base lines of the Wayne Hummer Suite Level, as well as one located in center field. The First and Third base party decks have a maximum capacity of 100 fans. The Center Field party deck has a capacity of 30 fans.” Here’s a look at the Party Deck packages: The All-Star Package - $37/person Party Deck Ticket, Hamburgers, Grilled Chicken Breast, Italian Sausage, Macaroni or Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Popcorn and Peanuts, Dessert (Fresh Baked Cookies), and Sodas. Single tickets range in price from $5-$10, and parking is always free!! Doors open 1 hour before the first pitch. For more information, call 219.882.2255 or visit them at railcatsbaseball. com
In addition to great giveaways, the stadium will also be offering some new food and drink specials for fans. “New this year is our Kids Eat Free Mondays and Two for Tuesdays,” explained Kirby. “On Monday, the first 500 kids get a free hot dog, popcorn and a soda. And then on Tuesday, its buy two get two free – and that’s good on tickets, hot dogs, soda and chips.”

Beer lovers in Northwest Indiana have something to celebrate. A delicious craft beer that originated - and has only been sold in central Indiana - is now available in Northwest Indiana. Sun King Breweryrolled out their first kegs of beer in 2009, making them the first full scale production brewery in Indy since Indianapolis Brewing Company closed its doors in 1948. Now, the brewery is available on tap and in cans in hundreds of locations – growing into the second largest beer brewer in the state of Indiana. With house brews like Sunlight Cream Ale, Osiris Pale Ale, and Wee Mac Scottish Ale, Sun King is gaining in popularity with their year round ales. What sets Sun King apart from other brewers is the fact that Sun King sells their beer in cans – not bottles. The brewery believes “Cans are a superior vessel for craft beer. A can is like a tiny little keg that delivers draft quality, fresh beer to your glass.” Here’s what else they say about serving their craft brew in a can: -Cans are impervious to light, which is one of beers greatest enemies. -Cans have a perfect seal that locks out oxygen, another one of beers greatest enemies. -Cans have a food grade liner that keeps the beer from coming in contact with metal. -Cans go places that bottles aren’t bottled – cans are great for outdoor activities. With outdoor parties, BBQ’s and tailgates in our near future; it makes sense to crack open a beerand the fact that it’s a craft brew – that’s just the icing on the cake!! And, if you are someone who’s conscious of our environment, you may be excited to know that cans are actually better for the environment!
Here’s why: -Cans are lightweight and reduce the amount of fuel needed to transport beer. -Cans are infinitely recyclable and the average can contain over 50% recycled material. -Recycled aluminum cans save 95% of the energy used to make cans from virgin aluminum. -Cans that go in a recycling bin can be recycled into new cans in under two months’ time. Alright, now that we know the ins and outs of Sun Kin Brewery – lets’ get to the task at hand- sampling one of their house brews. This month, I was given the job of sampling their Sunlight Cream Ale. The company calls it, “their most approachable beer, and with a smooth malt profile, and a crisp clean finish, this brew will leave you thirsty for more!” This had me intrigued!! And the fact that it has an alcohol content of 5.3% - and it’s an award winning ale (receiving the Silver Medal at the 2010 World Beer Cup for Golden or Blonde Ale Year-Round for drafts and cans), I was excited for the taste test. I cracked open my Sunlight Cream Ale and poured it in a chilled pint glass. I immediately noticed its clear gold color. Before taking a sip, I put the glass to my nose so I could take in the aroma, and noticed it was pleasant and light. There was a grainy, malty aroma, and I even noticed a hint of buttered sweet corn – pretty refreshing. Time to taste! At first sip, I immediately noticed it was light, creamy, and oh so smooth – very approachable as the brewers suggested. As I finished off the glass, I realized just how easy it was to polish off the can, and how this would be making the rotation in my summer beer fridge. NWI BAR
We all remember watching the classic comedy Cheers and thinking how cool it would be to drink at a bar where everyone knows your name – or have a friend like Norm to sit by your side while you tossed back a few. Many search for the ultimate friendly neighborhood bar in hopes of finding a “Cheers like” place. But did you know there’s actually a place called Cheers right here in Northwest Indiana? That’s right, Tom and George Tsakopoulos own Cheers, located at 1942 45th Street in Munster. They guys say they have the friendliest bar crowd, and it truly is a place where everyone knows your name. “Cheers opened in June of 1990,” said Owner Tom Tsakopoulos. “It’s been under the same ownership since day one – 22 years! We take pride in the being in the area for so long.” Cheers is a sports bar that offers family dining, and Tsakopoulos believes there’s one thing that sets his bar apart from the others – FOOD! Cheers offers warm-up starters like homemade soup of the day and homemade chili, and Major League Starters like Fried Cheese Sticks, Fried Mushrooms and Zucchini, and Potato Skins. On the menu you’ll find bar favorites like wings, pizza, and sandwiches. But it’s their Dinners which may have you running – not walking to Cheers. Dishes like Spanakopita, BBQ Baby Back Ribs, and Filet Mignon are sure to please! “We definitely have the best food of any sports bar in the area,” he said. “We have been known for our great food for quite some time, but people also love our drink specials.” The bar offers up four draft beers – the selling – and then they change them with seasonal beers. They have 30 domestic
bottles and 25 import bottles. They carry almost all the popular liquors, an assortment of wines, specialty drinks like margaritas and daiquiris but are perhaps best known for a signature drink. “People come to Cheers to try out Mongolian,” said Tsakopoulos. “It’s a fruity drink with eight different liquors. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser!” Speaking of their crowd, Cheers sees their busiest nights on Fridays and Saturdays. They occasionally have live music – everything from acoustic to full bands, and they are excited to offer their patrons something new starting the month of May. “On Monday nights, starting in May we are having ‘cruise nights’,” explained Tsakopoulos. “This special weekly event will take place from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and will give car enthusiasts a chance to show off their classic cars and charity events.” Cheers offers up drink specials every day, and promotes them on their Facebook page, Cheers Food and Drink. One special they are continuing to run is $3.00 Vegas Bombs during Blackhawks and Bulls Playoff Games. Enjoying a sporting event on of their various flat screens is something patrons have grown used to, and enjoy grabbing a stool up at the bar. The bar at Cheers is square with 20 stools and an open concept – they also have 10 high tops and 25 regular tables. Cheers is open from Monday through Saturday from 11:00am to 2:00am and on Sunday from 12:00pm to 12:00am. For questions, feel free to call Cheers at 219.922.1325.

Gone Shootin’ is a cover band that primarily plays classic rock and metal music thought they don’t like to pigeon hole themselves to a specific genre. The band has been playing professionally for the past year – before that it was a party here and there just for fun. “We started out with a little stroke of luck,” said Guitarist Dave Isom. “I bought a house a few years back and decided to crank up the guitar amp one day while I was the only one home. The next day, my neighbor Ken Barto approached me and said he could hear me playing. Rather than complain that it was too loud (as I expected him to), he invited me over to jam in his basement. As it turns out, Ken is a damn good drummer! Ken had been jamming with his buddy Chuck Curran for many years, and Chuck had played guitar in a previous band with Don Kacz. I brought in my buddy Tim Parish to play bass and it all just clicked.” After just having fun with it for a while, the decision was made to focus their jam sessions into actual practices. They started polishing songs they knew and adding songs they liked until they had enough material to go play a show. The guys knew it’d be a tough road ahead since there is no shortage of classic rock cover bands around the region, so they decided to change things up so they stood out from the rest. “You can have 10 bands that play AC/DC and Judas Priest, but there is only so much “Back In Black” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” that a person can take,” Tim Parish said. “We play all those bands you would expect to hear in a great Classic Rock show, but we don’t fill set lists with all the radio hits. We dig deeper for the B sides, the less “radio-friendly” tracks, tunes that only true rock and metal fans know. We play songs that young rockers growing up in the 70’s and 80’s would have been blasting on their hi-fi’s.”
The members of Gone Shootin’ are pretty spread out across The Region these days, from Whiting down to Lowell. They’ve been playing regularly at Miso’s Overflow Tavern in Hammond, but have also done shows at The Crowbar on the East Side, Pick-Ups in Lynnwood, Windjammers in Hegewisch, the Whiting Elks Club and in various subterranean basements for our friends’ parties. “Last year we were invited to play the beer garden at Pierogi Fest in Whiting,” said Isom. “It was by far the smallest “stage” we had ever been on (it was 2” off the ground and only large enough to fit the drum kit) but it was the largest crowd we had ever played for!” And while that performance may have been their biggest it was their first gig played in front of a public crowd that sticks out the most – after all you never forget your first! “We had been invited to open for another local band at a bar on the East side of Chicago called the Crowbar,” said Isom. “I think we were all nervous as hell because we weren’t sure what to expect. We were finally out of the basement, and in front of a wall-to-wall crowd in the bar! We blew through a couple songs and got a great reaction from the crowd. We kept jamming and they kept cheering! It was such a rush! For most of us, that moment was the realization of a life-long dream.” Gone Shooting will be performing in Hebron on Friday, May 24th for the 2nd Annual Memorial BBQ of the Brave. To learn more about their upcoming shows, you can check out their website, www.goneshootin. us or at www.facebook.com/goneshootinband. The band hopes to see you at their next show! “We love our fans and are grateful to all of them for coming out to see us each time we perform,” said Isom. “It’s way cool to look out in the crowd and recognize people that have been to several shows, and keep coming back for more. There is nothing better than playing music for a rabid crowd of rock n’ rollers!”
