Suds & Cocktails Written by Rosemarie Stephens

From the guys who brought us my absolute favorite beer, FAT TIRE - comes a new seasonal pale ale. It’s called Tour de Fall, and it’s an American Style Pale Ale brewed by New Belgium Brewing. It’s a fall beer that packs a punch with 6% ABV.

Brand Story:

New Belgium’s love for beer, bikes and benefits is best witnessed with the ruckus and kinetic fun their Tour de Fat. This revival or bemusement is their FUNdraiser for local nonprofits that starts with a cruiser ride and ends when someone trades their car for a bike. Throw in some tasty beer, your alter ego, booty-shaking music, and high fives. They’re cruising both Tour de Fat and Tour de Fall Pale Ale across the country during their favorite time of year. Crack open a bottle and drink in the show!

Style Expectations:

When it comes to American Pale Ales, it’s all about the hops. Characterized by the fruity, floral and citrus-like American hop varieties, these Pale Ales should produce medium hop bitterness while hav-

ing a high hop flavor and aroma profile. Typical of this style is to “late hop” so that the essential hop aromas are preserved when added to the kettle at the end of the boil. An additional dry-hopping will add a hop flavor boost without creating bitterness. Pale Ales are light in color, ranging from plae gold to deep amber. They should be refreshing, with sufficient supporting malt, moderate fruity-ester flavor and aroma and medium body.

Pairing Guidelines:

Find balance by matching beer strength with food strength! The citrus and fruity pale ale has just enough bitterness to meet and match bolder, fatty foods. Use your knowledge of beer’s style and raw materials to create compliments. Consider contrasting elements to discover opposite flavor interactions. So go for the deep fried Oreos, cayenne candied almonds, corn dogs or hot dogs with spicy mustard, fried cheese curds and caramel apples!!

Taste Test:

I had to go ahead and put this brew to the ultimate taste test. From the moment I poured it, I immediately noticed the beautiful amber color and wonderful citrus smell. The taste – WONDERFUL! I immediately was hit with the citrus and tropical fruit notes, along with a bit of caramel and toffee. The Tour de Fall is an overall great pale ale that I’d love to see year round!

Annual Check-Up

During her annual checkup, the attractive woman was asked to disrobe and climb onto the examining table. “Doctor…” she replied shyly, “I feel uncomfortable undressing in front of you.” “All right,” said the physician, “I’ll flick off the lights. You undress and tell me when you’re done.” A few moments later her voice called out from the darkness, “Doctor, I’ve undressed. What should I do with all my clothes?” “Put them on the chair, on top of mine.”

The Mortician

The mortician calls Mrs. Smith, and says, “Excuse me Mrs. Smith, but I can’t seem to close the lid to your husband’s coffin due to his enormous erection.” To which she replies, “Why don’t you cut it off and stick it up his ass? That’s the only hole in town it hasn’t been in.”

M&R RUSH Livin’ for the Music Tour When M&R Rush first took the stage at Theatre at the Center in Munster on August 17th, it was plain for all in attendance to see that the band meant business when they named their 2014 tour “Livin’ for the Music”. The band came out with smiles on their faces and spring in their steps as they rocked the sold out 450 seat venue. What was billed as a two hour show ran for over three hours as the group left the crowd in attendance panting and hungry for more. The very first number the band played was the song that first brought them into local prominence, “Rock and Roll Chicago”, a tune that most bands would have saved for their encore. “Rock and Roll Chicago” was the song selected by the Loop radio station for the station’s first “Hometown” album in 1980, and became the number one requested song on the album. From there the band launched into covers of “Too Much Time” and “Loreli” by Styx, a group

M&R Rush used to tour with, and the band’s energy and joy at appearing live before an appreciative audience was immediately apparent. It was obvious from their performance that the boys were just having fun playing together again and the passion they displayed immediately lifted the audience and carried them along for the ride. For the group, with all six original members on stage including the co-founders of the band Marty Mardirosian (the “M” in M&R Rush) on drums, and Roger Hirtz (the “R” in M&R Rush) on bass, and John McFarland, Jeff Luif and Paul Martin on guitar and Carl Moszur on keyboards, it must have felt like the old days in Roseland playing in Marty’s aunt’s basement. Mixing in original material with covers, Luif, McFarland and Martin each took turns delighting the crowd on lead guitar while Hirtz danced his way across the stage playing his bass riffs. The band did not technically take an intermis-

6 - www.NWIEntertainer.com

sion break, but Carl Moszur allowed his mates a breather as they transitioned from one set to another while Moszur played a fantastic medley on keyboards. Not to be outdone, Mardirosian later transitioned the group from one set to another to let his band mates catch a breather with a riveting, extended drum solo. The end of the show even featured audience participation as Mardirosian brought females fans up on stage as “back-up singers” during an extended version of “Ridin the Storm Out” by REO Speedwagon and “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin. All in all, it was a fantastic show. The audience got their money’s worth and left the theatre smiling (along with the band). The venue was perfect, the lighting superb and the acoustics perfectly mixed for the size of the venue. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the show a 9.

Sex Therapy

Two women had been having a friendly lunch when the subject turned to sex. “You know, John and I have been having some sexual problems”, Linda told her friend. “That’s amazing!” Mary replied, “So have Tom and I. We’re thinking of going to a sex therapist”, said Linda. “Oh, we could never do that! We’d be too embarrassed!”, responded Mary. “But after you go, will you please tell me how it went?” Several weeks passed, and the two friends met for lunch again. “So how did the sex therapy work out, Linda?”, Mary asked. “Things couldn’t be better!” Linda exclaimed. “We began with a physical exam, and afterward the doctor said he was certain he could help us. He told us to stop at the grocery store on the way home and buy a bunch of grapes and a dozen donuts. He told us to sit on the floor nude, and toss the grapes and donuts at each other. Every grape that went into my vagina, John had to get it out with his tongue. Every donut that I ringed his penis with, I had to eat. Our sex life is wonderful, in fact it’s better than it’s ever been!” With that endorsement Mary talked her husband into an appointment with the same sex therapist. After the physical exams were completed the doctor called Mary and Tom into his office. “I’m afraid there is nothing I can do for you,” he said. “But doctor,” Mary complained, “you did such good for Linda and John, surely you must have a suggestion for us! Please, please, can’t you give us some help? Any help at all?” “Well, OK,” the doctor answered. “On your way home, I want you to stop at the grocery store and buy a sack of apples and a box of Cheerios.”

How to deal with depression.

STREETWALKER: Daphne Duncan NICKNAME: “The Abyss” Created by: Sam Mechling PIMP: Deacon “Fadeproof” Slither TASTES LIKE: a bowl of gumbo someone sprayed with Febreeze

Bailey, a student from East Chicago, asks: I’ve always been a bad student, but last semester, I got diagnosed with ADD and now I’m about to fail out of school. How am I supposed to get out of this hole when I know I’ll never be able to focus? STREETWALKER: Don’t worry sugar. My mind is always wanderin’ too. Last week, while I was gettin’ nasty with a customer, I heard those sex noises and it sounded like somebody was stirrin’ up a hot bowl of Easy Mac. I’ll be damned if that shit didn’t make me huuuungry!

Gina, a tax professional from Lowell, asks: I know there’s more to life than sex, but guys always seem to reject me, then suggest we stay friends. How is that not supposed to affect me? STREETWALKER: Amen honey! One time, I had a Lacrosse team hire me for a house party and they didn’t want sex or nothin’! They just tied me to a chair and threw dog biscuits at me for three hours. That was eeeeasy money, baby!

Josh, a bar manager from Michigan City, asks: It seems like I always get depressed this time of year because of the weather. How am I supposed to cope when everything is all frozen and bleak? STREETWALKER: Yeah, it ain’t no fun walking down by the riverboat when its snowin’, but on the bright side, my Daddies love it when my nipples look like stacks of poker chips! Woo! Wooooo!

Confessional

A guy goes into the confessional box after years being away from the Church. He pulls aside the curtain, enters and sits himself down. There’s a fully equipped bar with crystal glasses, the best vestry wine, Guinness on tap, cigars and liqueur chocolates nearby, and on the wall a fine photographic display of various women who appear to have misplaced their garments. He hears a priest come in. “Father, forgive me for it’s been a very long time since I’ve been to confession and I must admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be.” The priest replies, “Get out, you idiot. You’re on my side!”

A Guy Calls the Hospital...

A guy calls the hospital and says, “You gotta send help! My wife’s going into labor!” The nurse says, “Calm down. Is this her first child?” To which he replies, “No! This is her fucking husband!”

THREE MONKEYS PUB CROWN POINT, IN

It’s funny how things work out sometimes. Call it fate, coincidence or even luck but every once in a while things just seem to work out the way you want them to. And that’s just what happened to Kevin Moss, the Executive Chef at Three Monkeys Pub in Crown Point. Moss has been working in restaurants since he was fifteen years old. He started as a bus boy at the old Angelo’s Sicilian Cart in Merrillville and became a cook at age sixteen. Over the years he has worked at various restaurants like Ruby Tuesday’s, TGI Friday’s & Buddy & Pal’s. While working for TGI Friday’s, he moved around from locations in Indianapolis to New York in various capacities like kitchen manager and bar tender. And all the while he was learning and developing his own ideas about how a restaurant should be run. “I learned on the job,” said Moss, a Dyer native and a 1989 Lake Central

graduate. “It took a long time to learn too. But I always had thoughts that if it was my place I would do it this way or that way.” At one point, Moss quit cooking and was only tending bar and running night clubs but he found he really missed the kitchen. “Bar tending is high volume stuff but it’s a young man’s game,” said Moss. “I found out I wanted to go back into the kitchen. I missed cooking when I was bartending,” continued Moss. “But I didn’t miss bartending when I was cooking.” In 2005, Moss was hired as a bar tender at Amore in Crown Point, but he got a shot to go back into the kitchen and he jumped at the chance and ultimately became the Sous Chef (Assistant Head Chef) for the next three years. It was at this point, Moss became reconnected with Jeff Augsburger, a friend he had made 25 years before. Over the years, the pair had worked together at five different places and the reconnection of this old friendship was the genesis of a partnership that ultimately became Three Monkeys Pub. “Jeff owns the bar and I own the kitchen,” said Moss. “Jeff was working in real estate and he found a place and Mike

Heminger, another friend, helped secure the necessary equipment and helped us get set up.” And so, in November 2011 Three Monkeys Pub opened its doors for business. The bar itself is an upscale sports bar catering to a 25 to35 age group. But what sets Three Monkeys Pub apart is the food, which is not your average bar fare. “It’s not a specific type of food, but everything is home made,” said Moss. “We have a little bit of everything that I add my own touches to.” Three Monkeys Pub is known for the diversity of its menu, which ranges from sandwiches and pizza to sushi. “We have four or five specials a day, depending on what ingredients are available that are the freshest,” said Moss. “The menu is seasonal, with lighter fare like salads, barbeque and ribs in the summer, steaks in the winter and fish during lent,” said Moss. “It’s not as gourmet as some of the trendy restaurants in Chicago, but its way better than any bars around here.” Three Monkeys Pub is located at 21 West 112th in Crown Point, just off Broadway by the Cold Stone Creamery. The bar opens at 11:00 am daily, and serves food until 10:00 pm on weekdays and until 9:00 pm on Sundays.

Sportsman’s Double

A guy ends up with an older woman at a bar late at night. She looked pretty good for a 55-yearold. In fact, she wasn’t too bad at all, and he found himself thinking she probably had a really hot daughter. They drank a couple of beers, and she asked if I’d ever had a “Sportsman’s Double”? “What’s that?” the guy asked. “It’s a mother and daughter threesome.” she said. As the guy’s mind began to embrace the idea, and he wondered what her daughter might look like, he said, “No, I haven’t.” They drank a bit more, then she said with a wink, “tonight’s your lucky night.” They hopped into a taxi and went back to her place. When they arrived back at her place and they walked into the front door, she turned on the hall light and shouted upstairs “Mom… you still awake?”

Wife’s Photo

A man is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock at the front door. He opens it to find two sheriff’s deputies there. He asks if there is a problem. One of the deputies asks if he is married. The man replies, “Yes, I am.” The deputy then asks if he could see a picture of the man’s wife. The guy says, “Sure…” and gets a photo to show them. The deputy says, “I’m sorry, sir. But it looks like your wife’s been hit by a truck.” The guy replies, “I know, but she has a great personality and is an excellent cook.”

Lost Grandson

A small grandson that was shopping with his grandfather got lost in the mall. The boy approached a uniformed security guard and said, “I’ve lost my grandpa!” The guard asked, “What’s his name?” The boy replied, “Grandpa.” The guard smiles, then asks “What’s he like?” to which the little tyke hesitated for a moment and replied, “Crown Royal whiskey and women with big tits.”

Victory For Veterans 15 Annual Memorial Ride th

Over the course of the summer there are plenty of benefit motorcycle rides that motorcycle enthusiasts can participate in. Some are bigger and some are longer than others, but there is no question that each and every one of them benefits a worthy cause. But the largest and single most iconic ride in Northwest Indiana is the Victory for Veterans Memorial Ride on September 28th, sponsored by North Township Trustee Frank J. Mrvan and AVMRA (American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association). The ride, which is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year, was begun to raise funds to build a Veterans Memorial in Wicker Park in Highland, and each year a portion of the funds go to the maintenance of the memorial. And every year, the balance of the proceeds are donated to a worthy veterans cause or charity. Last year’s ride raised money to purchase televisions for the Indiana Veteran’s Home in West Lafayette. This year, the Northwest Indiana Veterans Coalition has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to support fund raising efforts for the Veterans Build Project, a project that will build a home for a deserving veteran and his or her family. “It’s the biggest motorcycle event in Lake County, attracting riders from as far away as Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin,” said Kelly Bridges, Activities Director for North Township. “This is the second year that I have been involved in running this event, but I have been

involved personally since 2003. I started out with my own booth when I was in the insurance business, I have ridden in the event and I’m the Assistant County Representative for ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) of Indiana,” continued Bridges. “But this event is very near and dear to my heart for personal reasons because my dad was a career man in the army, serving in both World War II and Korea.” This year’s ride will take place on Saturday, September 28th. Registration will take place at Wicker Park from 9:00 to 11:00 am. And at 11:00 am the opening ceremonies will take place. Members of AVMRA will raise the American flag followed by a vocalist singing the national anthem. After the anthem there will be brief remarks by Township Trustee Frank J. Mrvan, State Senator Frank Mrvan Jr., Sheriff John Buncich and other dignitaries. And finally, before the bikes hit the road, two planes from the Lima Lima flight team will put on a small air show. The bikes will then head out about 11:30 am in a “Parade Style” ride. Along the route the ride will be escorted by Highland, Munster, Dyer, Schererville and Lake County police. The route will take the riders west on Ridge Road to Columbia Avenue where the ride heads south. From there the ride turns back west on 45th Street to Calumet Avenue, where it heads south once again to US Route 30. From there the ride turns east along Route 30

to Taft Street, where it turns back north to Ridge Road. From there, the bikes will turn back west for the home stretch and the return to Wicker Park about 1pm. The cost to register a bike is $25, $35 for a couple. Riders will each receive a souvenir pin commemorating the ride, lunch and two drink tickets. There will be a beer garden, military vehicles and other exhibits from the American Military Museum in Crown Point on display, And at press time efforts were being made to bring World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War re-enactment groups to the event. In addition there will be craft vendors and Memorial Ride T-Shirts on sale. 1,500 to 1,800 bikes are expected to participate, with the weather being the deciding factor in the number of bikes. Even if it rains, at least 800 bikes are expected. There will be a number of motorcycle groups participating including AVMRA, ABATE of Indiana, the Buffalo Soldiers, members of the Red Knights (firemen), Blue Knights (police), motorcycle enthusiasts and members of the general public. “People should come out because it’s dedicated to honoring members of the armed forces, both active and reserve and those who have fallen,” said Bridges. “It’s an opportunity for the community to come together to support veterans organizations.”

After the end of World War II the American economy was booming. And as income rose, so did the standard of living. Americans found themselves with more disposable income than ever before. As more and more of the population prospered, average Americans were now looking to spend some of their new found wealth on entertainment and recreation. And bowling was one of the ways they spent it. By the 1960’s, it seemed that just about every American man was bowling in a league at least one night a week. A ‘boys night out’ invariably involved league bowling and just about every town in America had a neighborhood bowling alley. By the 1970’s, bowling was so popular that many bowling alleys had both early and late leagues almost every night of the week. Leagues were so predominant that it was difficult to find a bowling alley that had open bowling because bowling alleys made their money through league bowling. But society is perpetually changing, and as technology presented Americans with a whole new range of entertainment opportunities, league bowling began to decline. Americans still liked to bowl, but people were too busy to commit to a thirty week league schedule; and as league bowling revenue dropped, many neighborhood bowling alleys closed. So bowling alleys have had to adapt to survive, and one local bowling alley in

Northwest Indiana that is reinventing itself is the Super Bowl in Crown Point. The Super Bowl still needs and has leagues, but the leagues are now a bit different than the traditional model. The Tuesday night men’s league may be a traditional five bowler men’s league, but the rest of them are all a bit different and some of them are quite unique. The Monday night league is an open, four bowler league with any combination of four men and/or women bowlers. The Wednesday night league features a four bowler women’s league. Thursday night features another four bowler open league, and Friday night is a four person mixed league consisting of two men and two women bowlers per team. Saturday night is when things really step outside the box. Rather than have a traditional, thirty week season, the Super Bowl has divided the season into two shorter, fifteen week seasons. The first fifteen weeks (September 13th through December 20th) of the season will feature a 9-Pin, No Tap “LGBT Rainbow League”; consisting of any combination of four persons of various alternative lifestyles. (Note: “9-Pin” refers to a nine pin strike.) The second fifteen week session (January 10th through April 18th) will feature a four bowler open “Tattoo League”. “Tattoo League” refers to the fact that persons who bowl in the league will receive a $150 voucher to-

wards a tattoo from Tainted Skin Tattoo on the final night of the season. So why would a bowling alley sponsor a “LGBT Rainbow” league and a “Tattoo” league? According to Super Bowl General Manager Christine Carlson, it’s an attempt to reach untapped markets. “The league we had on Saturday nights disbanded so I figured why not give it a try?” asked Carlson. “We had nothing happening on Saturday nights anyway and I had looked around online to see what other bowling centers were doing so I thought why not?” “Our Monday through Friday leagues are ABC sanctioned leagues but on Saturday nights we’re looking for people who want to go out and have fun.” “We have a lot of fun events at the bar too,” continued Carlson. “We had a Zombie Crawl last year that was a big hit, we have a huge bar, a DJ and Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night beginning at 10:00 pm and “Cosmic Bowling” (black light bowling) every Friday and Saturday from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am so come on in and have fun!” The Super Bowl is located at 218 South East Street in Crown Point and all leagues have availability. Interested parties can call the Super Bowl at 661-9015 for more information.

Old Virgin Maid

In a tiny village lived an old maid. In spite of her old age, she was still a virgin. She was very proud of it. She knew her last days were getting closer, so she told the local undertaker that she wanted the following inscription on her tombstone: “Born as a virgin, lived as a virgin, died as a virgin.” Not long after, the old maid died peacefully, and the undertaker told his men what the lady had said. The men went to carve it in, but as the bastards they were, they thought the inscription to be unnecessarily long. They simply wrote “Returned unopened.”

Bulgarian Tourist

A tourist from Bulgaria visits the United States on his first overseas trip. Upon arrival at the Immigration desk, he is visibly puzzled filling out his visa application. The immigration officer looks over the man’s shoulder, and sees the tourist trying to write “Twice a week” into the small space labeled “SEX”. The officer explains “No, no, no… that isn’t what we mean by this question. We are asking ‘Male’ or ‘Female’.” “Does it matter?” the tourist answers.

JALAPEñO’s

Schererville, IN Written by: William Mathews

Beginning when the restaurant and bar first opened in 1997, Jalapeno’s has always been a preferred destination for people who wanted to enjoy authentic, homemade Mexican food as well as those who liked to enjoy a little night life. And when current owner Ari Weichman took over in 2007, he was determined to continue to build on the restaurant’s prior success. “Jalapeno’s was popular from the day it first opened,” said Weichman. “So when it became available, I was fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of the opportunity; and since then I have tried every day to continue to make a good thing even better, if not great.” One of the first things Weichman did upon taking over was to improve the ambience and appearance of the bar and dining room. He began by knocking down some walls to not only make the interior of the bar roomier, but also to improve the sight lines for bar patrons who wanted to enjoy the live entertainment while enjoying their drinks in the bar. “The bar used to be enclosed so people in the bar couldn’t see the bands,” said Weichman. “But by knocking down the walls and creating a more open area we made it a much better experience for our bar patrons.” Weichman also upgraded “Margarita Island” outside with a new bar, new tables and chairs and installed a new fountain.

And by removing the old bar Weichman was able to create room for additional seating. And believe it or not, even though Jalapeno’s has always been known for their outstanding Mexican menu, the food was also something Weichman wanted to improve. “We want to continue to serve the best home-made food possible,” said Weichman. “And to keep providing the best home-made food it’s necessary to use better, more expensive ingredients.” In addition to improving the food, Weichman, who has a night club background from the days when he owned Woodhollow, wanted to improve the entertainment. “What I wanted to do was to make it into a different, more diverse venue,” said Weichman. So in keeping with this theme, Jalapeno’s currently offers entertainment of one kind or another five or six days a week. On Monday night there is Trivia, on Tuesday night Karaoke is featured and Wednesday night is Open Mike Night. On Thursday nights there are live bands, and there are DJ’s every Friday and Saturday. And on the first Tuesday of every month, there is free Zumba (in the west parking lot during the summer months). Jalapeno’s has also scheduled special events and attractions that cater to Hispanic and Latin tastes in particular. “There are fewer Latin and Hispanic venues, so we wanted to do some Mariachi shows

and provide DJ’s that play salsa, bachata and Top 40 Latin music,” said Weichman. “We have some Mariachi shows coming in September where we have a Mariachi band followed by a DJ playing Latin and Hispanic music.” “And since September is Hispanic Heritage month and Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, to celebrate we have a Mariachi show planned,” continued Weichman. “We’re going to have shows that coincide with all the Hispanic holidays.” Jalapeno’s is also hosting “Sabor Saturdays”, where DJ’s play salsa and bachata music. In addition Jalapeno’s will soon be offering free salsa lessons too. But entertainment aside, Jalapeno’s is still a restaurant first. Delicious home-made Mexican food is still the bread and butter of the business. “We strive to continue providing quality, authentic, home-made Mexican cuisine in an inviting and serene atmosphere,” said Weichman. “We have a great product and we work hard to maintain that level of excellence and attempt to improve on it every day.” “From Day One, that hasn’t changed. When you have a good thing, all you can do is try and continue to make it better.”

Husband Nick-Names

Three women were sitting around throwing back a few drinks and talking about their sex lives. Karen said, “I call my husband the dentist because nobody can drill like he does.” Joanne giggled and confessed, “I call my husband the miner, because of his incredible shaft.” Kathy quietly sipped her whiskey until Joanne finally asked, “Well, what do you call your boyfriend?” Kathy frowned and said, “The postman.” Looking puzzeled Joanne asked, ”Why the postman?” “Because… he always delivers late and half the time it’s in the wrong box.”

Case of Gonorrhea

The Mother Superior calls all the nuns together. She then says to them, “I must tell you something very serious. We have a case of gonorrhea in the convent.” A nun in the back responds, “Thank God! I’m so tired of Zinfandel.”

Screwed Wife

A man walks into a crowded local bar brandishing a revolver yelling “Who’s been screwing my wife?” A voice from the back of the bar shouts back, “You don’t have enough ammo, mate!”

Track Team

The ambitious coach of a girls track team gives the squad steroids. The team’s performance soars. They win the county, state and eventually national championship. A few days before the international grand finals, Penelope, a 16-year-old hurdler visits her coach and says, “Coach, I have a problem. Hair is starting to grow on my chest.” “What?” the coach says in a panic, “How far down does it go?” Penelope replies, “Down to my testicles. That’s something else I want to talk to you about.”

Ashamed of my Wife...

I was walking down the street with my wife earlier when she accused me of being ashamed to be seen with her. “That’s total bull” I replied, by text, from across the road.
