rude oil and pipelines had been paired up for so long, it seemed as though they were destined to be together forever. In recent years, though, everything from surging oil production and maxed-out pipeline capacities to environmental opposition and regulatory hangups seems to be coming between this once-harmonious partnership. What’s more—rail appears to be the new darling on the scene.

MARKE T ISSUES

Of several factors pushing pipeline transport to its limits, rising production is the first to note. While it took a while for technology to advance enough to allow for substantial production in the Bakken, advance it has, and producers are wasting no time pressing on with aggressive drilling plans and enhanced recovery schemes. This glut of oil, from the Bakken and elsewhere in Canada, is pushing pipeline capacities to the breaking point. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that in 2011, energy analysts Purvin & Gertz—among others— predicted the need for additional pipeline capacity as early as 2014 to handle the burgeoning crude supply. Consider also that producers are able to fetch higher premiums on international markets than in North America, and you can see why they are eager to get their product to coastal ports—by any means possible. Unaffected by the looming capacity crunch and political and environmental

obstacles that plague pipelines, rail is an increasingly attractive solution. Though it is typically a more expensive way to move oil, the current price disparity between North American and international markets makes it worthwhile. Rail presents other benefits as well, including the ability to rapidly scale up and down to meet demand and adapt to changing markets quickly. Some producers, like Crescent Point Energy Corp., were keen to jump aboard, stating that rail transport would allow them to diversify their markets for Bakken crude and manage pipeline disruptions more effectively. In late 2011, they completed lease preparation in the Stoughton area for oil-loading rail facilities and ordered transloaders to fill rail cars with trucked-in oil. Crescent Point’s dedicated Stoughton facility is conveniently located in the Viewfield Bakken area, just a few miles from its Viewfield gas plant. The facility was completed in January 2012 and became operational in February, delivering

2,500 barrels per day of Bakken production in its first month. Throughout 2012, Crescent Point continually increased oil deliveries through Stoughton. The third-quarter average throughput was more than 15,500 barrels per day, with an additional 1,000 barrels per day being delivered to third-party sites. It also got a rail loading facility up and running in the Dollard area, and began shipments there in October with a capacity of approximately 4,000 barrels per day. Clearly pleased with its return on investment, Crescent Point ramped up deliveries through both facilities. Expansion of the Stoughton rail facility in late 2012 increased shipping capacity to 40,000 barrels per day, and in December it announced its intention to expand the Dollard facility to more than 10,000 barrels per day in 2013. number one and two carriers, are happy to capitalize on the urgent demand for transport solutions. While just a few short years ago CN was moving no crude, today it’s supporting Bakken development with fast and scalable transportation to desirable destination markets in eastern and western Canada, the U.S. Midwest and the Gulf Coast. CN’s truck-to-rail transload locations in Willmar, Bienfait and Woodnorth are within 30 miles of most Saskatchewan Bakken production, and are open to anyone. In October 2012, CN signed a memorandum of understanding with Tundra Energy Marketing Limited to construct a crude oil rail car loading terminal near Cromer, Man., to meet the needs of Bakken crude oil producers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Jean-Jacques Ruest, CN executive vicepresident and chief marketing officer, says, “Working closely with companies such as Tundra Energy Marketing is making the transportation of crude oil one of CN’s

We expect to move more than 30,000 carloads of crude oil in 2012, and we believe we have the scope to double this crude oil business next year.” CP is also dedicated to servicing the Bakken formation, calling it a key area of focus

and part of the railway’s growing energy portfolio. CP has demonstrated its ability to deliver crude oil by rail in North Dakota, where volumes of rail shipments grew from roughly 500 carloads in 2009 to more than 13,000 carloads in 2011, and are expected to grow to 70,000 annual carloads in the future. Transferring lessons from their North Dakota operations, CP is increasing volumes of crude oil movement by rail out of the Saskatchewan Bakken through a new transload facility, operated by Bulk Plus Logistics in Estevan. This is in addition to railcar loads already moving out of the Dollard transload facility, located on the Great Western Railway Ltd., a short line partner of CP. CP is also investing more than $90 million to enhance capacity on its U.S. main line south of Saskatchewan, through North Dakota and into Minnesota to handle anticipated increased Bakken crude shipments. This includes upgraded track and sidings.

RECOVERY ME THODS

BrING oN ThE

F LO ODS The Bakken has proven flooding as a method for producing from unconventional plays By Leisa Vescarelli

T

he Bakken formation is a 350-millionyear-old, 25-metre-thick, underground layer of shale, siltstone and sandstone, spanning about 520,000 square kilometers across Montana and North Dakota, southeastern Saskatchewan and a small portion of Manitoba. The U.S. Geological Survey once projected that there may be as many as 503 billion barrels of oil in the Bakken formation. This was promising news for Saskatchewan’s oil and gas industry, government and other shareholders—but when it comes to actually getting that oil out of the ground, the story gets a little complicated.

14

SASK ATCHEWAN OIL & GAS SHOW 2013

Though the Bakken is undeniably massive—and oil saturated—the oil is trapped in layers characterized by very low porosity and permeability. In the early 2000s, much was made of “unlocking” the tricky formation, primarily through improved horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing and, later, multistage fracturing techniques. However, Bakken wells tend to behave more like a geyser than a stream—with an initial wellspring of high production that declines quickly and plateaus at low rates in as little as nine to 12 months. With such steep declines, primary

production techniques are just the tip of the iceberg in reaping the most out of this remarkable resource. Rather than investing in new wells every few years—a proposition that is time, resource and money intensive—a number of producers are seeking ways to use technology and innovation to squeeze additional production out of existing assets. Last year’s Bakken Tight Oil Congress, held in Denver, sought to shine a spotlight on specialized, targeted enhanced oil recovery (EOR) as the key to reaping the most from this type of tight, unconventional formation.

RECOVERY ME THODS

S

Crescent Point’s testing has found that waterflooding can help boost recovery from about 10 per cent to 30 per cent of oil in place.

The Congress advocated that it was “imperative that industry dismiss the ‘one size fits all’ mentality for completion styles in exchange for tailored completions for specific reservoirs across the varying play types.” To that end, several Canadian producers have been exploring various EOR methods to best sweep oil out of their specific regions of activity. Flooding methods comprise three of the most promising EOR techniques, including waterflooding, CO2 flooding and natural gas flooding. In the simplest terms, the flooding method is just what it sounds like: pushing a

substance into a formation. Waterflooding uses—you guessed it—water to increase pressure inside the formation in order to displace oil and drive it to the surface. Crescent Point Energy Corp. implemented its first waterflood pilot project in 2008, and within the first two years of testing found that waterflooding formations being tapped by nearby horizontal wells with multiple fracture stimulations could help boost recovery from about 10 per cent to 30 per cent of oil in place. Today, with five years of experience in executing, refining and combining

waterflood methods, Crescent Point remains confident that waterflooding is the right EOR for their needs. In a December 2012 presentation, Crescent Point announced that it would be expanding its waterflood initiatives. “Based on continued positive waterflood response in our core Bakken and Shaunavon resource plays, we have increased our waterflood capital for 2013 relative to 2012,” said Scott Saxberg, president, chief executive officer and director. “In addition, we’ll expand the waterflood program to include our Beaverhill Lake,

SASK ATCHEWAN OIL & GAS SHOW 2013

CO2 EOR is a triple threat when it comes to coaxing oil from

Uinta Basin, Alberta Viking and Manitoba Bakken plays.” Like Crescent Point, Legacy Oil + Gas Inc. is also exploring the technique and has observed positive waterflood responses at pilot projects in both Taylorton and Heward. At 2012 year-end, it reported that oil production had increased 2.6 times in

16

section 29 at Taylorton and 3.7 times in section 28. Legacy has moved forward with additional waterflood pilot expansion into the section to the south. At Heward, where the pilot waterflood project initiated in December 2011, the wells seeing a response have shown a 6.4 times increase in oil production since

commencement of injection, and Legacy has indicated it will be rapidly expanding the waterflood pilot project into three additional sections in the first half of 2013.

tricky formations.

RECOVERY ME THODS

after its laboratory analysis, computer simulations and early field experimentation led it to believe that natural gas would sweep the tight Bakken reservoir more efficiently. This early simulation work suggested reserve recovery factors could improve from approximately 15 per cent under primary methods to over 25 per cent with natural gas as a flooding agent. Though it’s a matter of debate which flooding agent is truly “best,” natural gas presents additional benefits in that it is readily available in the area, it is both less expensive and less corrosive than CO2, and the injected natural gas can be recovered and sold at a later date, further enhancing the full-cycle economics of an EOR scheme. As of January, PetroBakken was piloting natural gas injection in three patterns in the Bakken and stated that existing pilot performance has shown gas as an effective injection fluid that is applicable in most areas of the play. However, since it aims to tailor EOR schemes to the technical complexities present, it also announced the commencement of a waterflood injection

pilot in the Handsworth Bakken—an area it said was not suited to gas injection due to the risks of zone losses and initial high water saturations—in the first quarter of this year.

A FLooD WITh ENvIroNmENTAL BENEFITs CO2 flooding deserves particular attention for its potential to meet both economic and environmental objectives. When CO2 is used as a flooding agent, increased oil production leads to significant economic benefits while at the same time the CO2 becomes permanently stored underground in the oil reservoirs— removing it from the atmosphere. CO2 EOR is a triple threat when it comes to coaxing oil from tricky formations. First, it acts like a solvent, freeing oil trapped in the reservoir, then it helps increase pressure, forcing more oil from the rock, and finally, it thins the oil, allowing it to flow to the surface more freely. Producing a daily average of 6,000 barrels of oil, Midale is the second-largest CO2-based EOR project in Canada. With

the neighbouring Cenovus Energy Inc.– operated Weyburn field, Weyburn-Midale forms the largest CO2 EOR project in the world. Together, these projects dispose of enough CO2 to offset 100 per cent of the CO2 emissions from all of the homes in Saskatchewan. Apache Corporation is a participant in the International Energy Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project. This project leads global scientific research into the underground behaviour of CO2 and develops best practices for carbon injection and storage at similar projects around the world. At present, approximately one half of Midale’s production comes as a direct result of Apache’s CO2 operations, meaning that over the next 20 years, an additional 45 million to 60 million barrels of oil will be recovered. Once thought to be near depletion, Midale’s life has been extended by more than 30 years thanks to CO2 EOR. Over the life of the project, 8.75 million tonnes of CO2 will be sequestered at Midale, the equivalent of removing two million cars from the road for a year.

A NEW

CONTENDER A combination of technology and regulation make Saskatchewan a great place to be a producer right now By Jim Bentein

S

askatchewan chalked up record crude oil production of 473,600 barrels per day in 2012—the second highest in Canada, after Alberta. As fracking and enhanced oil recovery technologies improve, provincial petroleum geological experts say it could be just the beginning for “next year country” in Saskatchewan. “The probability for secondary recovery is pretty high,” says Erik Nickel, a petroleum research geologist with the Ministry of the Economy’s Petroleum Development Branch. “The low-hanging fruit has been developed, but 90 per cent of the resource is still there. If we have a eureka moment with [technology] we could double our production.” Nickel says the booming Bakken play in Saskatchewan, where production is approaching 100,000 barrels per day, is a good example of what can be done when technology—in this case, a combination of horizontal drilling and multistage fracking— is commercially developed. He and co-worker Dan Kohlruss, also a petroleum geologist, say plays like the Bakken, which covers a 500,000-square- kilometre area in North Dakota, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the related Viking and Shaunavon fracking plays, have future potential. This opinion is echoed by many, including Brad Wagner, manager of

licensing and environmental liability with the Petroleum Development Branch and Melinda Yurkowski, assistant chief geologist with the Saskatchewan Geological Survey. While controversy abounds regarding fracking’s impact on the water table and its potential to cause earth tremors and other issues, Wagner points out that fracking has been taking place in Saskatchewan for decades without any major implications. “Fracking isn’t new in Saskatchewan,” he says. “It has been used here for the last 40 years, and over 30,000 wells have been fracked.” Because the reservoirs being tapped are far below the water table, there is no possibility of contamination between the producing frac fluids and the water table. “In all of the shale oil plays—the Bakken, Shaunavon and Viking—the reserves are all at depths of one to three kilometres, while our potable water is at 30–300 metres,” explains Warner. The potential for tremors, given the nature of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, where earthquakes are virtually unheard of, is remote. The fact that Saskatchewan’s production zones are shallower than in neighbouring North Dakota and other areas of North America where fracking is in widespread use, also minimizes the potential.

“In general, the shallower the zone, the less frac pressure is used,” says Warner. Yurkowski says the province has strict regulations in place that require producers to contain and dispose of fracking fluids and to utilize the government-operated fracking waste facilities.

Technological advances improve production Malcolm Wilson, chief executive officer of the province’s Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), says the Bakken play, part of the much larger Williston Basin where growth in crude output has jumped from 100,000 barrels per day to 800,000 barrels per day in the last five years, shows how complex and varied basins can be. “There are huge differences in various parts of the Bakken,” Wilson says. “There are differences in permeability and the deeper part of the zone is in North Dakota. The wells there are very expensive and you get significant production for 18 months, then it levels off.” By contrast, the shallower zones on the Saskatchewan side maintain lower levels of production for longer periods. “Wells in North Dakota can cost $10 million and up each,” he says.

sask atchewan oil & gas show 2013

21

“They cost $3 [million] to $4 million in Saskatchewan, so you can operate at lower [crude] prices.” The PTRC works with universities and research bodies throughout the world on new technologies, Wilson says. He and others at the PTRC are intrigued with the potential of CO2 injection to increase production from fracked wells. “I keep looking at CO2 as an alternative,” he says. “The literature shows the potential is substantial. Over the years there have been quite a few wells fracked with it, but not in Saskatchewan.” Proppant, a material that will keep an induced hydraulic fracture open, during or after fracturing, has also been successfully used. However, one problem with the use of proppants and some other stimulants is they can produce saline water, which leads to an issue with cleanup. “We’re looking at how water can be cleaned up so it can be reused,” Wilson says. However, the use of polymer-based stimulants has been successful. “We’re working with one small company on that

and the results from field tests have been very good,” he says. “It’s being used in the Bakken and in other areas of Saskatchewan, such as the Viking and Shaunavon.”

Synchrotron radiation is a scientific tool used in areas as diverse as archeology, materials research and earth sciences, and the PTRC believes it can help producers provide better resolution of fracked zones. “We may be able to use it as a reservoir simulator to see what is happening in the individual pores,” says Wilson. “As it is, it’s difficult to model.” Another approach the PTRC is looking at involves the use of microsensors in reservoirs, which would provide valuable information for mapping the reservoir. Using ultrasonic sensors might allow for better communication with drillers. “Can we help the industry do a better job of mapping in the subsurface?”he asks. To find out, the PTRC is working with a university in Holland that has developed a microseismic technology expertise on this application. It will likely be possible

to use this technology first in shallower heavy oil–producing reservoirs, but it may also have a role in the Bakken and in other areas where fracking is common.

Government incentives increase drilling While the province’s work on technological advancement is important, its industryfriendly fiscal regime is what keeps producers active in areas like the Bakken and elsewhere in the province, says Dean Potter, president of Calgary-based junior Elkhorn Resources Inc. “This stuff is high capital-cost production,” says Potter, a petroleum geologist, who heads Elkhorn. “The province’s Crown royalty incentive is a serious part of the puzzle.” The incentive, which applies to drilling on Crown-owned land, effectively offers producers a royalty holiday. Overall royalties in the province, which were lowered from 65 per cent under the former New Democratic Party government to 15 per cent or less under the current Saskatchewan

Party government, is what makes development in the Saskatchewan Bakken economic, especially given that wells are less productive than in North Dakota, he says. Elkhorn, which produces 2,000 barrels per day from wells in southeastern Saskatchewan, where it owns 100 sections, is proof the incentives work, he says. “This was a company that was started 18 months ago and now we employ 200 people in Saskatchewan, and those people aren’t making $14 per hour,” he says, adding that the provincial government understands this contribution and the importance of the incentive. “It [the incentive] is taking things that aren’t economic and making them so.” As a result of the incentive and shallower wells, it costs about $2 million to drill a well in the Saskatchewan Bakken, as opposed to $10 million in North Dakota, he says. Because land lease costs in North Dakota are much higher, the economics of drilling in less productive areas of the state don’t add up, even at the higher rates of production than in Saskatchewan, he says. “It drives our economics,” Potter says.

saskatchewan is canada’s secondlargest oil-producing province—with about 14 per cent of all Canadian crude oil production. Though the spotlight has been firmly fixed on the prolific and buzz-worthy Bakken these past few years, there are numerous plays throughout the province that are just as essential to Saskatchewan’s flourishing oil and gas industry. Here’s a look at a few of the province’s other oil plays.

MISSISSIPPI Fast facts

If the Bakken has become something of a show pony, then mississippian plays are undoubtedly the province’s workhorses. According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of the Economy (former Ministry of Energy and Resources), most oil production in Saskatchewan has been from Madison Group (Mississippian) carbonates in southeastern Saskatchewan, cumulatively amounting to 364 million cubic metres of medium and light oil, or about 43 per cent of oil production in the province. The Midale play alone accounts for 23 per cent of the total oil production from nearly 7,000 producing wells. While drilling and exploration in the Mississippian has targeted the usual horizons, such as the Frobisher, Midale and Alida, a large number of new wells have been completed in the Ratcliffe beds in the Skinner Lake, Oungre and Freda Lake fields. The bulk of these wells are operated by NAL Energy Corporation, Prince Enerplus Corp. and Arc Resources Ltd. PetroBakken Energy Ltd. Albert also manages a large inventory of conventional light oil wells in North the Mississippian play in addition toBattleford their extensive Bakken activity. There are presently significant blocks of open Crown lands Saskatoon surrounding these new developments. Red Deer

VIKING Fast facts

The viking is a geologically complex formation extending across most of saskatchewan. An unconventional reservoir consisting of highly bioturbated sandstones and siltstones with very low permeability, the Viking has an estimated 2.3 billion barrels in place. The region is primarily gas bearing, with oil production confined to west-central Saskatchewan in the Kindersley-Dodsland area. It has produced oil from conventional wells since the 1950s, but has recently seen an uptick in production, largely due to horizontal well technology coupled with multistage fracturing techniques. At only 700–750 metres deep, the Viking is relatively shallow, which helps to lower drilling and completion costs. Saskatchewan’s favourable royalty and regulatory system, paired with low production costs, results in extremely profitable netbacks for producers in this region. Saskatchewan’s Viking oil production sits at over 25,000 barrels per day thanks to 760 new horizontal wells in the formation.

LOWER SHAUNAVON The shaunavon Formation is comprised of an upper unit and a lower unit, both formed in the middle Jurassic era. The lower, purely carbonate member typically has very low permeability, and the upper mixed carbonate-clastic member commonly has multiple producible reservoirs within the same well, making it a very popular target for oil exploration companies. The play has been known since the 1950s, but exploitation was largely considered uneconomic because, like the Bakken, the Lower Shaunavon is characterized by low porosity and permeability. Advances in horizontal drilling, multistage fracturing and completion technologies over the past six or so years led to exploration and development of a tight oil play Prince Albertregion. From 2007 to 2011, over within the Lower Shaunavon 210 horizontal wells were drilled into the low-permeability resNorth ervoirs of the Lower Shaunavon, with production totalling over Battleford 4.26 million barrels. Crescent Point Energy Corp. made consolidating the region Saskatoon a prime acquisition objective in 2009. Today, they control approximately 90 per cent of the play, leveraging their knowledge base in Bakken recovery techniques to exploit the Lower Shaunavon resource. Yorkton

WATROUS

THE ONE TO WATCH Fast facts

The Watrous Formation is a stratigraphical unit of Triassic to Jurassic age. Referred to as the Spearfish Formation in North Dakota, the Lower Amaranth in Manitoba and the Lower Watrous in Saskatchewan, the potential of this formation is as hard to peg as the name itself. The Lower Watrous is informally divided into a lower, oil-bearing sandy member and an upper shale member. It is situated on the northeastern edge of the Williston Basin near the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border and stretches south into North Dakota. According to the Petroleum Branch of Manitoba Innovation, Energy and Mines, the Lower Amaranth was the second most productive oil horizon in Manitoba in 2010, having produced 5.4 million cubic metres of oil since 1980. At this time, the reservoir potential of the Lower Watrous—in Saskatchewan—is not well understood, and the production from this formation is still in its infancy. If, however, as the Alberta Geological Survey indicates, the Watrous Formation of Saskatchewan is considered equivalent to the Amaranth Formation of Manitoba on the basis of lithological similarity, stratigraphic position and physical continuity, this will Prince Albert be a play to keep an eye on in coming years.
