The Lismore Lantern Parade – Our Healing Hearts When is the Lantern Parade? The 28th Lismore Lantern Parade returns home to the Heart of Lismore on Saturday 25 June. It is seen as a respectful, humble and tentative acknowledgement of our challenging relationship with the River that runs through the heart of our town. We hope it will be a chance for us to reach through our

DJ's FURY 9-10pm Dust Fallen- (Fury Salvemini) + Fury-Enzo + Fury-Enzo Salvemini Hailing from the rugged yet alluring bushland of remote far North Queensland Australia, Furyenzo Salvemini AKA Dust Fallen, has an organic, joyful and energetic approach to psychedelic music production. Living amongst the gumtrees and towering granite outcrops, Fury was inspired by the progressive psychedelic genre and fell in love with the style at the tender age of thirteen. Introduced to Djing by friends and family, Fury's passion continued to grow until being compelled to explore music production in late 2018. By this point it was clear that his passion for music was not waning. This led him to the realisation that music creation was something that deserved more of his time and attention. Finally in 2021 Fury undertook studies at SAE Byron Bay. This is where his musical vision began to crystallise and finally, he crafted a sound worthy of sharing with the world. A unique sonic journey that is expressive, raw and organic. One that exemplifies the natural surroundings from which his musical inspirations and dreams were born. The Dust Fallen project can be described as a melodic journey through emotive progressive and psychedelic soundscapes, grounded by tight funky basslines and balanced with the natural sonic vibration of recorded instruments and cultural voices from the deep. Borrowing influences from many subgenres of progressive music, Dust Fallen's sound is one that leaves listeners thirsty for more. This sonic fusion is one not to be missed. https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/DdXGf

It’s Feisty’s original approach to her sound that has made her stand out. Sexy, hypnotic, hip grinding rhythms and rolling baselines characterise the Feisty sound, culminating in a style that delivers an unmatched energy to the dance floor. What do you love about Lismore? What I love about Lismore has definitely been amplified during this last few months as the amount of support and spirit of the community has been multiplied tenfold. Lismore is a resilient town, as has been shown over the past few months. Everyone has a story to tell, and I think what sets Lismore and the Northern Rivers apart is that people are willing to listen to those stories and can provide a shoulder to lean on. Human connection is very prevalent in the Northern Rivers, through music, arts, businesses, schools, workplaces and households. You don’t need to walk far to connect with someone on a certain level and bond over shared experiences, especially after the times we’ve had. It is clear that Lismore is built upon the connections of the people and the ongoing support to all shown by the community, for the community. That's what I love about Lismore.

Trinity Catholic College Lismore PRINCIPAL - BR JOHN HILET PRINCIPAL Will begin with a liturgy to celebrate the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers. This year we also commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the Marist Brothers' arrival in Australia. The Liturgy will be led by Bishop Greg Homeming and a livestream link will be sent to parents/carers. During the Liturgy the Bishop will bless and commission our first lay principal for the College Mr Jesse Smith and farewell our outgoing Principal - Br John Hilet for his leadership of the College since 2013. Br John is the last Marist Brother to be Principal at a school in Australia. The Bishop will also bless the “Three Violet Badges’ to be presented to Year 7 students and the 150 year of Marist Education in Australia badges to be presented to every student at the College.

On Friday 8 April 1872, the first Marist Brothers’ school in Australia was opened at St Patrick’s at the Rocks in Sydney. Four Brothers formed the staff: a Frenchman, Br Ludovic, 29, was leader; an Irishman, Br Jarlat, 25, was his assistant; a 21-year-old Scotsman, Br Augustine, was teacher of the top class; and another Irishman, Br Peter, 25, was the cook. In 1962, the school was relocated to Kirby Street, Dundas, where it is now known as St Patrick’s Marist College. The Marist presence in Australia began in 1837 with the arrival of the first missionaries to Oceania from France. Over the coming decades, Archbishop Polding, senior clergy, and committed lay leaders were unwavering in their efforts to ensure families and the growing number of children in the colony were afforded the choice of a quality Catholic education. After some years of negotiation and advocacy by the Marist Fathers and the esteemed Archdeacon John McEncroe, the first Australian Marist school became a reality.

The Marist Brothers and Their Work MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT. My purpose is merely to outline the work of one who, born in the year of the French Revolution, seemed destined in the ways of Providence, to restore much of the ruin which had befallen the Church in France, and whose work in the cause of Christian education, spread by his devoted sons in many lands, has made the name of the Venerable Marcellin Champagnat loved and revered by thousands beyond the limits of his own beloved France. Marcellin Champagnat was born on the 20th May, 1789, in the diocese of Lyons. His parents, though poor in what the world calls riches, were rich in that deep spirit of Catholic faith which it was their privilege to instil into the minds of their ten children. Among the neighbours in their humble village the parents of Marcellin were held in high respect. The father—a small farmer and mill-owner—was frequently requested by the people to advise them, and often to settle little disputes. The mother attended most assiduously to the household duties, and saw that her family were early imbued with that Christian piety, the powerful sheet anchor when the world was rocking in the storm of materialism and infidelity.

Rev. J. B. Marcellin Champagnat, FOUNDER OF THE MARIST BROTHERS Founder of the Marist Brothers Venerable Marcellin Champagnat Whatever may be our views on the political ideals of the French Revolution, we cannot condone its intrusion into the sphere of religion. During those 'August Days' of 1789 when the privilege and inequality of the Old Regime were swept aside for ever, it was but natural the authority should be in jeopardy when all authority was found irksome. For a century the seeds of irreligion had been scattered, and the reason of man deified and grace disregarded. Hence when the storm burst, the Church lands were confiscated, the clergy reduced to the rank of servants of the State, religious houses suppressed and their inmates scattered. The generation during that period grew up in a profound ignorance of Christianity or in open hostility to the Church. This was vividly brought home to a young priest working as curate during 1817 in the parish of Lavalla in the diocese of Lyons in the south-east of France. His name was Father Champagnat.

The Order in Australia

Catholic Freeman's Journal, Sydney. Thursday 6 June 1940.

On the morning of February 26, 1872, the 'Star of Peace' sailed through Sydney Heads, three months out from London. On board were four Marist Brothers, destined to commence the first schools for boys controlled by religious teachers in this country.

Brother Ludovic, the Superior, has left a diary of those days full of interest. Material facilities were almost nil, nor were the hundred and thirty boys who enrolled the first day more than usually earnest in their thirst for knowledge. We assembled them in the Upper Harrington Street Hall, writes Bro. Ludovic, speaking of this first day, and soon had an illustration of what Australians call larrikinism.

We feared for a time that the floor would give way under their feet. . . . Pens were broken, ink spilt, and the paper covered with blots and caricatures. Perseverance, however, won out in the end. Moreover, before the year was out the first Australian had joined the Order, and soon there was a flourishing Novitiate. Six schools were dotted round Sydney within a decade. This has since expanded to thirty-nine, with 302 Brothers teaching 8991 pupils in five States of the Commonwealth. The latest venture of the Australian Province tis a Mission School in the British Solomon's (founded 1938). All the Brothers speak the native dialect, and in addition to the teaching of religion do all possible to foster the native arts and crafts.

The disruption caused by the Fourth Industrial Revolution has been accelerated by COVID-19 coupled with natural unprecedented weather changes, has increased our need for agility, adaptability, and positive transformation. As the global economy rapidly digitalises, an estimated 70% of new value created over the next decade will be based on digitally enabled platform business models. However, nearly half of the world’s population remains unconnected to the internet. While digital technologies have the potential to enable new value for everyone, they risk further exacerbating exclusion, the unequal concentration of power and wealth, and social instability. Companies must use digital infrastructure and data to collaborate, develop innovative business models, navigate disruption, and transition to a new normal - post-pandemic, purpose-driven, sustainable, and inclusive.

smartphones.

It might still be early days for Lismore's business to business recovery but with the right innovation, partnerships and the region’s relentless community spirit, this region is ready and poised to usher in a new era of inclusive growth.

Two things are crucial to ensuring equitable access to technology and driving digital adoption across the region. Firstly, local markets need local solutions. What works for one market may not work for another. What will be needed is a deep understanding of each market and a localised approach to addressing specific pain points. Second, collaboration is essential. No one player can do this alone and there are many areas where governments and businesses can work together to enhance digital and financial inclusion so that technology can be a real force for good.

TAX Checklist for Businesses: Getting your business’s end of financial year work done smoothly is no small task. This handy checklist offers a reminder of the key processes and major to-do items. End Of Financial Year (EOFY) isn’t just a marketing opportunity for businesses looking to entice business customers to make the most of available tax deductions. It’s also the most important time of the year for business owners to maintain compliance and set their business up for success in the following 12month period.

seven-point checklist 1. Review recordkeeping processes 2. Check your Business Activity Statements 3. Prepare a Taxable Payments Annual Report (if relevant) 4. Finalise payroll and super obligations 5. Taking stock: Inventory, assets and liabilities 6. Complete reconciliations for FY21/22 7. Prepare for FY22/23

“Yeah, nah”

There’s no wonder, then, that tax time induces a certain level of anxiety among many business owners – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Tax agents can help you get the most out of your tax returns and can ultimately save you money in tax deductions you might’ve missed on your own.

Here’s a seven-point checklist to EOFY for the small-and-medium business owner.

Plus, the accountant fee itself is tax-deductible, so you might as well take the (kind of) free help.

Lismore's Jordan Biviano and Mick Shelford Share NSW Title When it came to last Saturday’s 2021-22 season finale at Hessions Auto Parts Grafton Speedway, there were plenty of big battles – and that was just with the threatening wet weather.

Joining Biviano on the podium was Mason in second and current Queensland Champion Daniel Henshaw in third. The top-five finishers were completed by defending NSW Champion Joel Berkeley, who was guest driving for the Lester Motorsport team, and Dakota Laverty.

However, when it came to the racing action on the track, it was Lismore’s Jordan Biviano and Queenslander Mick Shelford who came away with NSW Title glory.

In the support class action, David Putsey took out the final Northern Rivers Rumble Series round for the RSA Street Stockers ahead of Luke Gray and Connor Reeves.

Leading up the last Saturday’s season finale, there was quite a lot of wet weather that affected the Grafton Speedway facility, but the promotion team, which were helped along by the wonderful support of volunteers and sponsors, didn’t let it deter them and they pushed ahead. Despite the wet weather interrupting the race meeting at one stage for an hour, they pushed on and were able to get the race meeting completed. Although the wet weather affected the track, it certainly didn’t stop the competitors from putting on a show and full credit must go to them for playing their part in getting the race meeting in.

The Northern Rivers Rumble Series point score was picked up by Connor Reeves after he had finished Saturday’s action in third place. The other feature-race winners at the season finale were Brodie King (RSA Four Cylinder Sedans), Jeremy Wade (RSA Junior Sedans), Harry Fowler (SSA Junior Sedans) and Colin Crepin (Legend Cars). The Grafton Speedway promotion team would like to thank everyone, including race fans, competitors and officials, for helping make the 2021-22 season a successful one. The team is now preparing to work on making the 2022-23 season even better.

www.graftonspeedway.com.au Production Sedans NSW # 1 Jordan Biviano!

The headlining acts were the NSW Titles for Production Sedans and Modified Sedans and it resulted in the wins going to Biviano and Shelford respectively.

In the NSW Title for Production Sedans, Biviano, who had started from pole position for the feature race, was amongst the front runners for the entire 30-lap distance. Biviano chased after pole sitter and long-time leader Michael Mason and took control of the lead on lap 17, and from there, he was never headed and scored the win.

Rex cuts five regional routes, two more under review Bathurst, Grafton, Lismore, Kangaroo Island and Ballina will disappear from Rex’s network, with potentially more to follow.

After more than a year under dark clouds, Regional Express confirmed it will axe four regional routes from Sydney and another from Adelaide by the middle of 2022. Services between Sydney and Bathurst, Lismore (both direct and via Grafton) will cease as of June 30 this year, in line with the cessation of the Federal Government’s Regional Airline Network Support program. Ballina has a slight stay on its execution but will wind up from July 2. South Australia has also been impacted, with flights between Adelaide and Kangaroo Island also to be dropped. The move leaves Bathurst, Grafton and Lismore with no scheduled services from any of Australia’s three major airlines. Qantas will become the sole operator of scheduled flights between Kangaroo Island with Adelaide, however Ballina remains served by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia and FlyPelican. The latest cuts to the Rex network follows two further withdrawals over the past few weeks, with both Melbourne to Albury and Sydney to Canberra now dead and buried.

Sharks also appear to be circling on a further two NSW regional routes, however in its statement today, Rex didn’t specify which two are in question. As has become the norm following network cuts by Rex, its Deputy Chairman John Sharp has again wielded his verbal axe in the direction of Qantas, laying the blame squarely at the feet of the Flying Kangaroo. “Qantas’ well-publicised predatory actions on Rex’s regional routes have meant that Rex no longer has the ability to cross subsidise these marginal routes,” Sharp said. “It is unfortunate that these regional communities are the collateral damage of Qantas’ bullying and heartless behaviour. This behaviour is all the more unconscionable after receiving over $2 billion in Federal bailouts over the past two years.” However, the outlook for Rex is not all doom and gloom. While its Australian network remains widespread, the regional carrier has also recently inked a codeshare partnership with Delta Air Lines to efficiently link travellers connecting in Sydney with flights to Los Angeles. Rex is also providing a well-priced option on major interstate routes and now links five state and territory capitals and the Gold Coast with its steadily growing fleet of six leased Boeing 737 aircraft.

Once again the Korinderie Ridge community is excited to welcome return and new visitors to join us for ‘Regen Week’ - a week of bush regen, incredible food, camping and conversation. This is our 18th year hosting this event which is an important part of the community's effort to protect and maintain original ecosystems and threatened species on this 200 ha property. Activities include systematic woody weed control work – removing Lantana in a team environment across a diversity of community types during the morning in exchange for delicious meals, bushland camp sites and opportunities for afternoon sightseeing or relaxing in the afternoon followed by great food and campfire conversation and music. Korinderie Ridge is located on the lands of the Bundjalang people near Evans Head in northern NSW – and is one of the more intact areas of IronbarkSpotted Gum forest and associated ecosystems on the NSW east coast. The forest is home to the Threatened brush-tailed phascogale and squirrel glider, Vulnerable Barking owl - along with hundreds of other animal and plant species. Lantana is a serious threat to the integrity of the forests in this location (including the adjacent Bundjalung National Park) and the combined effort of community members and volunteers has completed the majority of the primary work at Korinderie sites over the last 18 years, so much of the work is now follow up – although some primary work is still needed along a couple of more remote creeks.

NAIDOC Week 3 July - 10 July Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! #Naidoc2022 #GetUpStandUpShowUp We have a proud history of getting up, standing up, and showing up. From the frontier wars and our earliest resistance fighters to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities fighting for change today—we continue to show up. Now is our time. We cannot afford to lose momentum for change.

We all must continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities. Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together. It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.

It’s also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.

Getting Up, Standing Up, and Showing Up can take many forms. We need to move beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments. Enough is enough. The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights. Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! with us to amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.

Good morning Customers! Taking a moment to acknowledge the amazing work that has gone into bringing us to where we are now. It has not been easy to say the least. None of this could have happened with out the work of our dedicated staff and loyal customers. And for that there is nothing but love, respect and appreciation. Our intention is to be able to offer as much as we possibly can, within our means through this extremely difficult time for all. It can be dis-heartening at times when we are unable to give what a customer is asking for and it is received negatively, given everything we have had to endure to get to where we are now. We are very proud of what we are achieving and we are doing our best to have what we have available. Our menu might be short and our Barista section limited- but I assure you we are doing the best we can. Please, dear customers be gentle and mindful of the circumstances when requesting things that we aren’t able to offer at this point in time.

I was there a few times last week and was so impressed with your service and your menu. Well done! You are doing such a great job and all with a smile. Pauline Cain

Our staff will do what is possible to meet requests and we ask that there is compassion and understanding when we cannot. Much love to you all, Dragonfly Cafe

Trees Not Bombs Community Recovery Café was set up by volunteers to provide free food and a sheltered place to sit down and relax, to flood affected community members and volunteer recovery crews. The Café has been open seven days a week and has been entirely funded by community donations.

As Trees Not Bombs is located in the Lismore cultural precinct (and while the art gallery, library and conservatorium are not functioning) the Café provides a space for community cultural events and activities. We have already hosted a community discussion and a live music night (featuring seven local artists). Musicians also do impromptu performances at Trees Not Bombs several times a week.

Trees Not Bombs is housed in an old circus-like marquee, set up under a magnificent fig tree, opposite the art gallery Upcoming events include a community choir workshop and an evening of stand-up poetry at the Lismore Quad. Since March 9, apart from a brief and prose. Other projected community and period during the second flood evacuation, Trees Not cultural activities include tai-chi, community Bombs has provided hot meals (2-400 a day), as well as tea, art workshops and family fun day. coffee and snacks. Equally important has been the ongoing provision of a pleasant, sheltered space for survivors to meet up, sit together or alone, read the paper and feel comfortable and supported. As far as we know we are still, ten weeks after the flood, the only place in the Lismore CBD where a sitdown hot meal is available.

The Channon hits the City Market Sunday, 12 June - 8am - 3pm PETS ALLOWED ON LEADS!

Held the 2nd Sunday of every month. Northern Rivers arts, crafts and produce, under the trees. Delicious foods and beverages. A taste of the hinterlands. In 1976, The Channon Craft Market Inc. was born into The Channon village, near Lismore NSW on the North coast of Australia. It’s strongly held ethic of “Make It, Bake It, Grow It” flourished and this is still nurtured by the market today. Since our renowned market’s beginnings in The Channon Hall in 1976, it quickly outgrew that location and moved to its location at Coronation Park.

The Market was originally set up to trade and barter goods between members of the community and its creation also provided a meeting place for like-minded people to explore current environmental concerns, from these original markets the community’s resilience prospered. The Channon Craft Market has grown enormously in size and reputation since the start providing a destination for local and visitors to the region the opportunity to purchase artisan goods and products, with over 240 stallholders displaying their wares. The Market has evolved during the last 43 years to become a Non-Profit Community Organisation with a Management Committee of nine volunteers. The Committee and Manager meet regularly to coordinate the diverse needs of our popular market, representing retailers, The Channon and surrounding local Community Groups and Staff. The Management Committee employs approximately 18 staff members to supervise and co-ordinate the smooth running of the market each month providing local employment and an opportunity to work in the event industry.

The Northern Rivers Conservatorium would like to thank our friends at Musica Viva and the Southern Cross University for their kind assistance in providing free tickets to those who have been affected by the recent floods in Lismore. As a long-standing supporter of the Northern Rivers Conservatorium, Musica Viva Australia is delighted to provide support to this year’s concerts. This support will help the Conservatorium offer free seats to those affected by the devastating floods, the effects of which will be felt for some time to come in the community. Southern Cross University is proud to support this event brought to us by the Northern Rivers Conservatorium. We are deeply connected to the communities that have been impacted, and we are proud to be a part of the region's recovery. Singer/songwriter, Lior is renowned for his beautiful voice and lyrics that radiate truth and sincerity, and as the world searches for compassion and understanding, the importance of music as a means of communication cannot be undervalued. In this musical narrative of love, loss and compassion, Tinalley and Lior perform a new song cycle by Melbourne composer, Ade Vincent. Three of Dvorak’s rousing love songs from his collection of Cypresses; echoes of love cherished, tormented and forgotten, are paired with Barber’s haunting ‘Adagio’ from his String Quartet Opus 11 and Lior’s achingly haunting ‘My Grandfather’.

In a final quest for peace, Lior and Nigel Westlake reimagine Sim Shalom (Grant Peace) from ‘Compassion’, merging the symphonic world with that of the string quartet. Ravel’s effusive String Quartet opens the program. Critics and public alike rejected the quartet when it was first performed, and yet now it is one of the genres most beloved works. At times wistful and at other times melancholic, even devastating; the work is in itself a reminder of the changeable nature of public sentiment. Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album, “Autumn Flow”.

Recorded and released entirely independently, the album became one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian history with sales surpassing platinum.

Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’ and ‘intuitive’ music making, Australia’s Tinalley String Quartet has established itself as one of the finest string quartets of its generation since forming in 2003.

A swag of accolades followed, amongst them three ARIA nominations - including Best Male Artist. Most artists set out with an ambition to build a career based on musical credibility and integrity whilst maintaining an independence and individuality in their craft. Lior is certainly part of that rare breed that has achieved this whilst garnering a great degree of success and critical acclaim. Awarded First Prize at the 9th In Australia, the Quartet Banff International String has an active recital Quartet Competition and Grand schedule and has appeared Prize at the 2005 Australian at the nation’s premier Chamber Music Competition, the festivals including the Quartet has performed Adelaide Music Festival, throughout Europe, America, Perth International Arts Canada and Australia to critical Festival, Canberra acclaim. In 2018, the Quartet was appointed Quartet in Residence at The University of Queensland, and released its first album on the DECCA Classics label of the Ravel and Debussy String Quartets.

How did the invitation to become involved with One From The Heart come about? I actually reached out to Mayor Steve Kreig who passed me on to Tony Duffy and Peter Weekes, so that was fantastic to have their support behind me from the get-go. I'm currently in Year 12, studying multimedia and I'm creating a documentary for my major work. The documentary focuses on music and its connections and impacts in people's lives. I pitched that idea to them and they all loved the idea of me filming at the event, so I was very appreciative of the support I was given.

Can you tell me what you are studying and how your interest in photography came about?

I’m currently undergoing my HSC and am the school Captain at Trinity Catholic College studying Music, English Advanced, Multimedia, Entertainment and SORII. I would definitely say that I heavily rely on the right side of my brain to function as I’ve always loved creating and making things, whether it be music, films or creations in general. I’ve always been interested in videography and photography from a young age, my dad would always have a camera making home videos and filming me and my siblings growing up, so I’d say that sort of sparked my interest in using a camera in general. I really started to become passionate about videography when I was about 11 and I picked up a point and shoot camera and began to film random things around my house. I’d say I really fell in love with videography when I realised the endless possibilities it can create. I think storytelling is such a powerful tool, so to be able to be the one to create and expand an idea into a video is something really special.

What was the equipment you were using to record the concert? I was using the Sony a7iii as my primary camera with a G master 70-200 lens along with a Sony a7sii with a Sigma 35mm lens. I absolutely love this setup as it gives me such versatility with shots, depth and quality, especially while capturing such a high energy event with a lot going on. The majority of the footage was either filmed at 60 or 120 frames per second which allowed me to really slow down the shots and give the viewer a chance to re-live the day through a video that hopefully does it justice!

How did the concert go for you as a photographer? Capturing the event went quite well! To see the community turn up rain or shine and relax for a day was fantastic to witness and was awesome for me to capture!

Do you have any stand out moments of the concert? Each of the artists were amazing, with so many legends performing on that stage it’s hard to choose a standout moment! (I must say, seeing Daryl Braithwaite perform Horse's live will always be iconic). I think a real stand out moment would be seeing this community that has been through the unthinkable in the last few months simply turn up, let their shoulders down and just enjoy some music which in itself has the ability to heal. With what has gone on and with the long journey still ahead, to be able to witness a day for members of the community to just relax and enjoy the tunes would definitely be a standout moment for me.

How did the processing of the images go?

Oh, it sure is time-consuming! However, I find the editing process quite satisfying and rewarding! As I mentioned, to be able to tell a visual story I think is very special and for a video, It all comes together in the editing process! Turning nothing into something is very rewarding. I think the most timeconsuming part would be sorting through the hours of footage and editing it to flow while telling the story in a way that is exciting and compelling. Though when it all comes together it is very satisfying.

Where would you like to go with your career path? I think it will definitely be something creative that allows me to create things, in some form or another. I’d love to continue to go along a videography path or some form of multimedia. I’m also a musician and I’ve always wanted to get into music as a full-time job so… maybe a musical cameraman?! I think this question can become quite loaded so to answer in short, I’d like to end up doing something where I can create and tell stories, make positive change and give back to others. Whether that something is through music, videography or any other career I pursue!

Alison Siliakus:

A life inspired by sound A robin singing in an English field inspired Lismore U3A tutor Alison Siliakus to become a teacher so respected that some of her high school students are still in contact with her 53 years later. Alison remembers the day of the robin. She was seven years old, sitting on a hay bale, when her farmer father said,

At 16 Alison (right) and her best friend Kaye cycled 35 km to see Britain’s best actors perform Shakespeare.

“Remember that robin’s song. It’s the purest sound you’ll ever hear.” Says Alison, now 94: “My dad taught me to listen to sound. It’s been incredibly important to me. I love sound, whether it's birdsong, an operatic aria or an actor speaking a line.” Today Alison has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Australian birdcalls, still studies opera and has led classes in Shakespeare since helping found U3A Northern Rivers in Lismore in 1994. Alison has loved Shakespeare since she had a lead role in Midsummer Nights Dream. She was a 10-year-old schoolgirl in the picturesque market town of Bromsgrove, 21 km from Birmingham.

Shakespeare’s birthplace is Stratford-upon-Avon. (Above) Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Her first job was teaching teenagers music, English, public speaking and how to talk without a Birmingham accent. She met a Dutch teacher, Henk Siliakus, at a folk dancing course. They married when she was 21 and he was 24. The couple supplemented her meagre teacher salary by playing in folk dance bands. Henk played the guitar, Alison the accordion and piano.

Alison was pregnant when one of Henk’s former lecturers offered him a position as German tutor at Adelaide University.

“I can distinctly remember Henk saying, ‘What are we going to do?’ and me saying, ‘Well, obviously we go. Otherwise, we will spend the rest of our lives wondering what we missed out on.” “So, he wrote back saying we'd come, and on the same day Lincoln (their first son) was born two weeks early.” LISMORE
