Help Lila rebuild security for herself and Summer

GO FUND ME Hi everyone I am fundraising for Lila. Lila left a DV a month ago, herself and granddaughter moved into a caravan in Broadwater, on Monday 28th February Lila only got out with a couple of bags of clothes her granddaughter and Louis (family dog). The water ended up over the top of the caravan.

After 3 evacuations they have now ended up at Camp Drewe in Lennox Head. I am doing this go fund me to help Lila get back on her feet as Lila is a talented artist who was also in the process of setting up and about to register to be able to finally fill her dream again of tattooing. Lila took on her granddaughter quiet a few years ago Summer-Rose. Summer-Rose will be 10 soon and has disabilities, she loves creating and drawing. So please help me raise some funds so Lila can sort out a car, has to rebuild her tattooing equipment and repurchase bedding, white goods for when Lila has a place to go. LISMORE

TWO MATES BREWING Born from a love of family and friendship, Two Mates had the vision to create a space to gather and grow friendships and nurture families while appreciating the things that the Northern Rivers Region is renowned for, great food, good music and cold brews. The devastation both financially and emotionally of the unprecedented events of the recent floods in Lismore has our families in complete shock. However, our business and our families are resilient and determined to rebuild our brewery for the community now more than ever. Unfortunately, our insurance company has notified us that our policy (like 90% of business's in Lismore) does not cover flood damage if the floods exceed the Levy wall, unless we had paid the enormous premium to activate this clause. This has added to our devastation, having already funded the start-up phase of the business solely between our two families. Two Mates will direct all funds associated with this appeal into the re establishment of all the Brewery and Taphouse operations, ensuring that we will return to delivering the same quality product and service as we did before this catastrophic natural disaster.

We thank you in advance Grant & Andrew

NO RELIEF By Kieran Pender

From fires to floods, Australia is failing our disaster survivors Effective disaster recovery is first and foremost about practicalities. For those who survive bushfires, storms or floods, lofty rhetoric and grand announcements do not cut it. Survivors need support and solutions: roofs over heads, assistance rebuilding, help today and help tomorrow. In modern Australia, too often they don’t get it. Witnessing the damaging floods in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, I have felt a deep sense of pessimism. I have been based on the New South Wales far south coast for the past two years, frequently reporting on the painfully slow recovery from the 2019–20 Black Summer blazes. I have seen first-hand how governments at all levels have failed bushfire survivors. I dread that flood victims will be next. More than two years after the devastating bushfires, most of those who lost their homes remain in temporary accommodation. Only about one in ten have finished rebuilding. Post disaster reconstruction is always difficult. There are often planning barriers and underinsurance problems. Survivors find the process retraumatising. But governments have done too little to help.

One of the major challenges for those rebuilding after the Black Summer has been trade and supply shortages, exacerbated by COVID-19. As I reported across the South Coast region, one story became emblematic in my mind of our governments’ disaster-recovery failures. Graeme Freedman, who lost his home near Cobargo on New Year’s Eve 2019, told me that he and fellow survivors were struggling to rebuild because they could not get tradespeople. Their healing denied, their mental health battered, because they could not get a plumber for love nor money.

Disaster recovery is about pragmatic solutions to difficult problems. But as state capacity has been hollowed out at the federal, state and local level, governments lack the practical resources to help.

Instead they throw money at the problem – even if sometimes it is rorted or unfairly allocated. But there are some problems that money can’t immediately fix, such as localised trade shortages. Which is why, at the same time as many of the private sector–run, government-funded support services withdraw from impacted communities, so many survivors remain in caravans and sheds. Compare this to a story from the Black Saturday fires in Victoria in 2009. In Kinglake, the two local petrol stations were razed. With uncertainty around remediation and costs, the operators did not wish to rebuild. It left the township without petrol, a real problem in a regional community. Anger built – until the state government intervened. Victoria’s bushfire recovery agency built a temporary petrol station in just a handful of months. It was extremely unorthodox; the state does not usually build and run petrol stations. But times of crisis call for pragmatic solutions. In addition to the practical benefits, “having access to fuel locally provided an important psychological ‘boost’ to the community in its ongoing recovery and reconstruction”, a subsequent review found. And yet getting plumbers to the south coast was put in the too-hard basket. Bureaucracy trumped practical support.

Ever the pragmatist, Freedman had an idea. The defence force, in Canberra, has plumbers, he recalled. And the bushfirehit south coast needed plumbers. “We were trying to see if there was any possibility of getting apprentices to come down,” he told me.

Flood recovery is not bushfire recovery, of course. The impacts, and the required “But it was just all responses, are not entirely alike. I desperately hope that those impacted by the too hard for them.” current floods have a better road to recovery than my community on the south coast. They deserve nothing less than the nation’s full support.

But both disasters should serve as a warning. The bushfires and the floods were unprecedented. Australia’s disaster recovery capacity needs to be overhauled and properly resourced to match. The climate crisis will bring more fires, more floods, more storms and more destruction. It is a future of increasing devastation heralding an even greater need for swift, practical support in the short, medium and long term (research suggests that community recovery can take more than a decade).

If the Black Summer was our first test of national resilience in this new era, we resoundingly failed. Any of our communities could suffer next. Since those dark days of the Black Summer, I have heard countless bushfire survivors tell me that they feel alone, abandoned. Not by their local communities, which have been heroic in the face of adversity. But by the government and by our leaders. What is the government for, if not to act in a time of crisis, if not to support those who are suffering? As a nation we have failed bushfire survivors. We must do better for the disaster survivors that come next – starting with flood victims. KIERAN PENDER Kieran Pender is a writer and lawyer. 2022-23 Budget Targets Flood Support And National Recovery And Resilience Wednesday, March 30, 2022 2022-23 Budget Targets Flood Support And National Recovery And Resilience | Ministers Media Centre (pmc.gov.au) ministers.pmc.gov.au/mckenzie/2022/2022-23-budget-targets-flood-support-andnational-recovery-and-resilience

As part of our plan for a stronger economy, the Morrison-Joyce Government is continuing to help communities recover from the recent floods in Queensland and New South Wales while also reducing future disaster risks, as part of a targeted package of measures in the 2022-23 Federal Budget. Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said under the Government’s Emergency Response Fund (ERF) we have committed the maximum allocation of $150 million per year for recovery and post-disaster activities to support affected communities over the next two years. “In 2022-23, $150 million from the ERF will deliver additional recovery and post-disaster resilience projects in the heavily impacted Northern Rivers region of NSW. Projects will be identified through a $10 million investment in the Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative that will be delivered by the National Recovery and Resilience Agency with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, and working closely with the NSW Government. “This builds on our previous announcement that in 2021-22 the Queensland and NSW Governments will each receive $75 million from the ERF to spend on projects where they, in agreement with the Australian Government, determine funding is most needed across the flood impacted Local Government Areas,” Minister McKenzie said. “The Commonwealth is providing financial support to communities hit hard by the February-March floods through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) and the Disaster Recovery Allowance. This support allows people in these communities to get back on their feet. The Commonwealth has already paid $1.29 billion in individual supports. “We are listening to communities and providing funding for support where it is needed most.

2022-23 Budget Targets Flood Support And National Recovery And Resilience Wednesday, March 30, 2022 “Under the ‘Resilient Kids’ program, $10 million will be provided over 4 years from 2021-22 to support the mental health of school-aged children in the Northern Rivers region affected by the recent flood event. “This measure recognises the effect a natural disaster can have on the mental health of children and will provide funding to the Primary Health Network to work with the community including parents, teachers and caregivers to commission early intervention mental health and social and emotional wellbeing supports to reduce the longer-term impacts from the event. “A further $800,000 is also being provided to the Regional Small Business Support Program to support small businesses impacted by the recent flood event in NSW and Queensland in two Rural Financial Counselling Service regions until 30 June 2023. “In addition, this Budget includes a $116.4 million boost for the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant Program. This means that every local government area impacted by the Black Summer bushfire disaster will benefit in some way from the total $390 million in grant funding. “These Budget initiatives will play a critical role in supporting disaster impacted local communities and businesses to recover as quickly as possible and be better prepared for future events.” In addition to these Budget measures, the Commonwealth has now committed over $2 billion, jointly with the New South Wales and Queensland Governments, to provide recovery support for businesses, primary producers and individuals affected by the March 2022 floods. For New South Wales, this includes jointly funding $1.44 billion in recovery measures:

Mould growth in our homes To help you manage mould at home, we’re sharing insights into how we manage mould our homes and some tips you can use to tackle mould at your house. Mouldy conditions Mould spores are always around, waiting for the right conditions to grow. Generally, mould will thrive in still air with high humidity. This might be warm rainy days in a closed house or cold damp conditions where lower temperatures mean the air can hold less moisture which leads to higher humidity.

Tips to manage mould in your home If we find mould, what do we do? While it’s not always possible, we find that it’s important to clean mould off surfaces quickly. Getting to mould outbreaks early means that they’re easier and faster to clean up and less likely to turn into a bigger problem.

What you will need As a word of caution, mould can seriously affect your health. It’s really important to use protective equipment (PPE), especially masks and gloves. People with immunocompromised should not expose themselves to mould. If you’re tackling the mould yourself, gather the following equipment: P2 masks disposable or rubber gloves microfibre cloths paintbrushes HEPA filter vacuum cleaner clean spray bottles white vinegar or methylated spirits

Water damage in your home can quickly lead to mold! Mould spray mix In your spray bottle, mix up a solution to tackle the mould, using either vinegar or methylated spirits and water. Vinegar spray: We use either white vinegar (you can find it in supermarkets and hardware stores as cleaning vinegar) diluted with water (80% vinegar, 20% water). Methylated spirits spray: Use methylated spirits diluted with water (70% methylated spirits, 30% water). Tip: As vinegar is a mild acid, don’t use it on anything made of metal or with metal components. As methylated spirits is a solvent, don’t use it on anything that is plastic or has a paint or varnish layer (such as Frenchpolished furniture). Steps to treat mould Now you have your equipment and spray, you’re ready to tackle that mould. If possible, use a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner with a dry paint brush to remove any loose mould by brushing the mould into vacuum nozzle. Microtools can be very useful for this. (Remember to change the bag and wipe down the machine afterwards.) Then spray a microfibre cloth with the vinegar or methylated spirits solution so that it’s just damp, and wipe down surfaces. Make sure you change the microfibre cloths regularly and dispose of them or clean them immediately after use. Airborne mould spores are commonly found in both indoor and outdoor environments. When they land on damp spots indoors, they may begin to grow and spread. There is no practical way to eliminate all mould indoors; the way to control indoor mould growth is to control the source of moisture.

Mould is a serious problem after premises have been impacted by flood waters. Properties must be remediated to prevent and/or minimise mould growth.

Arts Northern Rivers have provided $165,000 in funding to support the recovery of artists affected by the catastrophic floods in the Northern Rivers. Since the disaster hit the region in late February, the Arts Northern Rivers team have been dedicating their time to advocate and fundraise for flood relief and recovery funding to directly assist individuals impacted by the devastating floods in the Northern Rivers.

With overwhelming community support nationally, Arts Northern Rivers has so far raised over $95k for flood relief. Coupled with an additional $70k from Create NSW, Arts Northern Rivers has $165k available to directly assist flood affected individual creatives. Over 250 applications for this immediate support have been received. Arts Northern Rivers is continuing to advocate for funding to potentially open this funding for a second round in order to provide support further across the arts and cultural sector within the region. The fundraising campaign remains open for contributions until April 25, with all assistance continuing to contribute to imminent need in this unfathomable circumstance. To donate visit pozible.com/project/flood-recovery.

Arts Northern Rivers is seeking support from urban, interstate, national and international communities to assist in the recovery from the catastrophic 2022 floods across the Northern Rivers region. In parallel, the peak arts organisation for the region is underway advocating for support from all available avenues; including state and federal governments, philanthropic, corporate and private channels. While these take time, the creative community needs assistance now. The creative sector across the entire region has collectively suffered untold losses: galleries losing entire collections, studios, equipment, and artworks in ruin, and livelihoods in freefall.

SURVEY OF FLOOD IMPACT ON OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY The catastrophic storm and flood event of March 2022 has had a devastating impact on the Lismore community and businesses across our entire Local Government Area. As part of Council’s efforts to support the business community, we are asking all local businesses - small and large - to complete the Business Flood Impact Assessment Survey. This will help us get a clear picture of the number of businesses affected and the extent of damage. It is hard to fathom the extent of the damage caused by this disaster unless you walk the streets, including through our industrial estates. The more data we are able to collect from all businesses about the impact of the flood, the fuller picture we can paint for the government and the more likely we can get greater financial assistance. This survey will help us, help you. That is why we need as many local businesses to fill in our survey so we can present your circumstances to government. LISMORE

But it stopped 20cm from our ceiling. We lost everything. Her show society accoutrements had been cleaned and another dress delivered in anticipation of the Sydney Royal experience but some of that was unsalvageable.

Jenna and Jy were quick to act on early flood evacuation warnings and fled the city with their dogs to the safety of Jenna's mother's parents house at Wyrallah, out of the flood. For that they were grateful, but going back home to clean-up was sickening.

"I took a hammer to my kitchen cupboards at one point," she said. "I think I was taking out my anger. "Once I cleaned up my house I then helped out at Woodburn. I love Lismore but I also wanted to help in my home town. My grandparents at Kilgin lost everything and where my parents live near Swan Bay the water came in by 25cm. We salvaged as much as we could. The chooks floated around on a dog bed and when the waters came down they just hopped off. There's actually a few more birds than before."

However, with a bit of grit and determination she managed to save her personally valuable show society sashes. "They were muddy alright, but with a bit of a wash and scrub they turned out quite nice," she said.

"My Pop made sure the cattle were on hill country before the flood, especially as he had recently bought a new Lyle Family Angus bull. But we lost two horses when they wandered off their raised mound. "With all the family going to Sydney we can forget about this place for a while; enjoy something Support from show sponsor Birdsnest Clothing different,." Jenna said. "It can be hard to remain helped flesh out her meagre wardrobe. positive. You do feel defeated at times but we will try to rebuild. It will just take time."

Cherry blossom trees bloom along the river in Takada, forming a pale pink tunnel that stretches around 2.5km to Onaka Park. In the evenings, the trees are illuminated and the park is strung with paper lanterns. Food stalls sell snacks and drinks, so you can dine under the flowers.

4,000 cherry blossoms lit up at Niigata's Takada Castle this spring

Written by Kaila Imada

All signs from the latest sakura forecast show that cherry blossom season is just around the corner. If you’re already planning a list of sakura spots to visit this year, you’ll want to add this gorgeous castle in Niigata to your list. Takada Castle Site Park in Joetsu, Niigata prefecture is home to roughly 4,000 cherry blossom trees which are illuminated at night along with 3,000 bonbori lanterns during the annual sakura festival. This year, the festival is celebrating its 97th year with festivities taking place between Saturday March 26 and Sunday April 10. While events are limited due to Covid19, there'll still be a lighting ceremony and fireworks display to kick off the festival on Saturday March 26.

The park has long been regarded as one of Japan's top evening hanami spots, with one of the highlights being the 300m Sakura Road, just south of the castle. Here, you can stroll under a tunnel of blossoming cherry blossom trees and see the bonbori lanterns illuminated once the sun goes down.

Aside from the cluster of blossoms near the castle, the inner and outer moat that surrounds the grounds and nearby Aota River are lined with even more sakura trees. It’s quite a sight to see, especially with the reflection of the lit up trees on the water. Yamatokoriyama Castle (Koriyama Castle), constructed in 1580, is a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot in Yamatokoriyama City, a castle town in northern Nara Prefecture. Its iconic sakura tree, or gotenzakura, has been popular for more than 400 years. Every year, from late March to early April, the Yamatokoriyama Castle Festival is held. Both the cherry trees and the castle are lit up, creating a harmonious beauty.

Better music for Lismore. A VISION FOR REGIONAL RADIO Tourist radio is not dead yet. Two brothers, Matt and John White have a vision for radio in regional cities that mixes great music with local information that is relevant to both locals and visitors. They call it Local Sounds Lismore. “We want to bring a local feel, professional sounding radio and the music people love to Lismore residents and tourists alike” John White said. John and Matt started their radio careers at community station YYY in Brisbane’s north in the early 90’s. Matt continued to work in radio industry across Australia over the past 25 years. John chose a career in the finance industry and continued his love for music playing in a rock band around Brisbane.

“We love radio and live music and want to bring the old tourist radio into the modern age, giving tourists a compelling reason to visit Lismore” said Matt White. “Our Air News Media partnership is key part of our model, we want to give listeners the latest news with a regular and comprehensive update. Air News provides a professional service that we believe is as good as the BBC.” John White said “We launched 3 weeks ago and have had a fantastic response from people living around Lismore and the region, listeners from outside the region are lapping up the local information. Because we are digital we can track new and repeat listeners and can already see daily growth. 70% of our listeners this week had listened in the preceding weeks, so we know the format is working”. The station name, Local Sounds says it all. The commercial free, digital only station, plays a wide variety of hits from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, they feature local artists and amp it up with a party mix every Friday and Saturday night. The station can be accessed for free via their website https://localsounds.com.au or via the free app. The station can be accessed for free via the website https://localsounds.com.au or via the free app.

Men & Family Centre wins national contract to develop online Men’s Behaviour Change Program for regional men The Northern Rivers-based Men & Family Centre (M&FC) has won a contract from No to Violence to develop and implement an online Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) for men in rural, regional and remote locations. The project could dramatically improve access to MBCPs for men in the regions, which are often unavailable outside of metropolitan or major regional centres. M&FC Co-Manager Lainie Rees said the organisation was chosen to lead the project because of its recognised expertise in the Men’s Behaviour Change field, and its understanding of the needs of regional communities. “Our established Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) is normally delivered through face-to-face group meetings.

“Over the past two years, however, face-to-face group meetings have been difficult to deliver due to COVID restrictions. This has forced us to look into online options to keep clients engaged with our service. “We’re excited by the opportunity to take the lessons we’ve learned over the past two years and apply them to the development and delivery of a full online behaviour change program for men living in rural, regional, and remote areas.” MBCPs aim to support men's behaviour change by directly challenging attitudes and behaviours that are driven by gender inequality and increasing men's understanding of the impacts these attitudes and behaviours have on affected family members. MBCPs attempt to increase the safety of women and children by supporting men to hold themselves accountable for their violent and abusive behaviours. The project is being managed by No to Violence – the largest peak body in Australia representing organisations and individuals working with men to end family violence. No to Violence CEO Jacqui Watt said the project was an important step in understanding online MBCPs for marginalised men. “We know that men living in rural, regional, and remote areas are too often unable to access MBCPs because of geographic limitations. "This project aims to understand the extent to which MBCPs designed specifically for the online space and for particular audiences are effective—and the implications for future programming.” “We are excited to work closely with the Men & Family Centre on this pilot as part of our ongoing commitment to collaborating with our member organisations to strengthen our practices and keep women, children and families safe,” explained Watt. The Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre has been contracted to conduct a full program evaluation. Men who wish to find out more information about the program should contact the Men & Family on (02) 6622 6116 or use the contact form on the Men and Family Centre website: www.menandfamily.org.au.
