FREE CONCERT TO LIFT OUR SPIRITS WAS HELD ON SUNDAY, 15 MAY To celebrate the resilience and lift the spirits of the Lismore Community, Lismore City Council, Chugg Entertainment and Helium will stage a free concert – ONE FROM THE HEART.
Loved the invite to #OnefromtheHeart Thanks, #LismoreCityCouncil for putting on an excellent free concert for our region.
Ankle deep and cathartic, kids and teens gave in to its muddy lure. It sucked off shoes, proved the uselessness of thongs, and provided a truly immersive experience.
"It sucked off shoes, proved the uselessness of thongs, and provided a truly immersive experience."
The Buckleys kick off magically, Sheppard were just fab, Darryl Braithwaite was great, Jon Stevens was bloody awesome with his INXS set (though his sound levels were a bit low), and for those who stayed past the Kelly's, local boys Grinspoon were fantastic finishing off the night with a much-needed therapeutic hard edge, along with an honest heartfelt acknowledgment of the loss of towns, streets and people...
"I love Lismore," said lead singer Phil Jamieson soulfully.

“Just three weeks ago Chuggi called. Snce that first call with Lismore Council, we’ve locked in the venue, the date, a line-up of some seriously great Australian artists, all of whom are playing for zero fees, along with a professional marketing and communication plan as well as a high end production and site plan,” he explains. In that time, “a team of strangers” has been assembled from both the music industry and council to form a “cracking ‘single purpose’ team,” he enthuses. Mayor Krieg is one of 3,000 locals devastated by the weather phenomenon; he lost his family home and his business as the town went underwater.
“About a week after the second flood hit us on March 30, I was talking with Council staff about what we could do to lift community spirits,” Krieg comments. “What we needed was a line in the sand moment that would mark a shift in the community’s mood of shock to begin the long hard road of rebuilding and restoring our homes and our community.” One of Council’s team reached out to Rick Sleeman, director of Sports Marketing Australia, and the call was put in to Chugg. MICHAEL GHUGG “Chuggi” A pioneer of the Australian music industry, Michael Chugg or Chuggi as he is affectionately known, has garnered a reputation both locally and internationally as one of the country’s most prominent music promoters, and is a name synonymous with some of biggest tours to have come through Australia and New Zealand over the past 50 years. Chugg’s foray into the music industry began in his hometown of Launceston, Tasmania in 1962, where he cut his teeth from the age of 15 running dances and managing bands until he relocated to Melbourne in 1969. In 1979 together with Michael Gudinski and Phil Jacobsen, Chugg co-founded the Frontier Touring Company.

Their first tours were with Squeeze and The Police, with Frontier going on to become the biggest promoter in Australia at the time, touring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more. In 2000, Chugg went out on his own to launch Michael Chugg Entertainment, which later became Chugg Entertainment. Over the past twenty years, the company has toured over 600 Australian and international artists, making Chugg one of the most prominent and respected promoters not only in Australia, but also around the world.

The numerous industry accolades that Michael Chugg has picked up over the years are testament to his incredible impact on the Australian music industry; he has been named as Pollstar’s International Promoter of the Year four times, has twice picked up the Best Promoter gong at the International Live Music Conference, received the prestigious ARIA Icon Award in 2019, and has a multitude of Billboard Awards, Helpmann Awards, Country Music Awards, Musexpo Awards and many more under his belt. In June 1998, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia on the Queen’s birthday, in recognition of his contribution to the Australian music industry and his philanthropic involvement with various charities.
PAGE 10
Chugg’s philanthropic undertakings are extensive; he has been heavily involved in developing and copromoting some of the country’s biggest charity events to date, launching Wave Aid (2005), Live Earth (2007) and Sound Relief (2009), which raised millions of dollars toward respective charities. He was a Board Member of the Prince of Wales Children’s Foundation, Support Act Ltd and F.A.C.E. (Entertainment for Australian Armed Forces), and sat on the NSW Arts Advisory Council Board. Additionally, Chugg is a trustee of the Golden Stave Foundation committee, which has over the years raised millions for the Paraquad Association, Camperdown Children’s Hospital, the Shepard Centre, Nordoff Robbins and the Starlight Foundation. An endearing character, Chugg together with music journalist Iain Shedden published a ‘tell-all’ biography in 2010, documenting his rise through the ranks to become one of the nation’s leading promoters.

‘Hey, You In The Black TShirt’ details forty years of music history in Australia, as Chugg reflects on the shifting pop culture and politics of the time, and recalls stories from behindthe-scenes of touring the world’s biggest bands; Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, David Bowie, ABBA, Guns N’Roses. The list goes on. Consistently expanding and taking on new projects, while also working with longstanding partners, Chugg has been involved in the inception and success of some of Australia’s most prolific music festivals including St Jerome’s Laneway Festival with cofounders Danny Rogers and Jerome Borazio, and CMC Rocks with the late Rob Potts, both of which continue to build and grow year on year. In 2019, CMC Rocks QLD experienced its largest ever event, playing host to over 23,000 daily attendees across the festival’s three days.

He has been a co-promoter of the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival (Bluesfest) with Peter Noble, and has over the years been involved with the Deni Blues & Roots Festival, Homebake, Mumford & Son’s Gentlemen of the Road mini-festival, and YouTube FanFest. He is an industry leader and public figure in his own right, often being the media’s go-to man for opinions on the music industry or the state of the nation. Not only has Chugg been a leading flag-bearer for international acts in Australia for decades, he has tirelessly promoted Australian music and musicians to the rest of the world. In 2012, on the eve of Chugg’s 50th year promoting shows, Chugg Entertainment proudly launched Chugg Music, an arm of the business that provides artist services including artist management, label services and consulting to primarily domestic artists. The indie label has seen major success over the years via Sydney-based duo Lime Cordiale, and Brisbane-based band Sheppard, who are responsible for global breakout anthem ‘Geronimo’, and continue to deliver hits that resonate around the world.

Angela Catterns, AM (born 30 September 1953) is an Australian media personality and broadcaster. Mostly known for her work on Australian radio, she has presented Mornings on Triple J, the National Evening Show on ABC Local Radio, and Breakfast on 702 ABC Sydney. She is also a podcaster, writer, interviewer, MC, facilitator, narrator & voice over artist. She presented with Australian humourist and broadcaster Wendy Harmer a holiday season version of the Breakfast Show on 702 ABC Sydney. In the mid-1980s, Catterns joined the ABC youth network, Triple J, as producer and then presenter of the morning show for the then Sydney-only radio station. She left Triple J for a short stint on commercial radio to present mornings on 2SM. Catterns was controversially sacked from 2SM after just ten months for unconvincing reasons, later saying herself, "I was told I was too intelligent for our audience and that women don't like listening to other women on radio". Following 2SM, Catterns spent time working at SBS Television as a researcher and producer, before leaving for the USA to pursue a long held ambition to work in American radio. Catterns landed an on-air shift at the top rating WKYS in Washington DC, a popular station best known for its soul and R&B music programming. Returning to Australia, Catterns rejoined Triple J as the full-time morning show announcer. Triple J had begun to broadcast nationally and had also just launched its longrunning "Unearthed" initiative. At Triple J, Catterns aired a selection of memorable and popular interviews with subjects like David Bowie, Michael Hutchence, Jeff Buckley and then Prime Minister Paul Keating. Catterns went on to host Triple J's drive program before making the move to ABC Local Radio, presenting the evening program across Australia (from the ABC Studios in Lismore, returning to one of her favourite spots on the NSW north coast).

Bruce MacKenzie graduated from Mullumbimby High School in 1983 and has been working as a broadcast journalist for 20 years - the last 15 of them in the Northern Rivers. His career began with a job in commercial television in Wagga Wagga, where he gained a degree of notoriety as the weatherman who thought a sheep graziers alert was a warning about large fellows in gumboots falling from the sky (this actually went to air).
Bruce MacKenzie is the lead news reporter at ABC North Coast.
Jobs in Wollongong and Newcastle followed before the chance came to move back to the North Coast. He started a television news service for a commercial network in Lismore in 1991 and worked there for 10 years - winning two "Prodi" Awards. He says the highlight of this time was getting to interview every world professional surfing champion in history, and managing not to drown in a puddle of hero worship. Bruce has dabbled in stand-up comedy and supported some of the country's best-known comics, his poetry has inspired two art exhibitions and he also loves his music. He began at ABC North Coast in 2005 as a rural reporter before moving into the newsroom in mid 2006.
ABC North Coast Richmond and Tweed 94.5 FM Murwillumbah 720 AM Grafton 738 AM ABC North Coast provides comprehensive coverage of local news, state and national news, and we focus on the issues and events that affect and shape our region. We began broadcasting from Grafton in 1936 and later moved to new studios in Lismore in 1989.
Bruce lives in the Byron area and has no intention of moving - ever. He no longer surfs with any degree of dignity but he does enjoy putting together a news bulletin.

Dr Hanabeth Luke joined the crowd at Lismore’s truly special ‘One from the Heart’ event on Sunday 15th May. “What a beautiful coming together of our communities to put the gum boots on and have some fun with absolutely amazing music from some Aussie legends.” Dr Luke said. Lime Cordiale , the band responsible for some of Climate 200’s youth focussed election content, played an energy filled set complete with wild outfits, and acknowledged the need to act on climate change NOW, inviting Hanabeth on stage briefly.
“It was a real treat to meet the band as well as Paul Kelly, rapper JK-47 and Grinspoon. What a special and symbolic moment to have Lismoreborn GRINSPOON close the event! The first time I saw them was at the rollerskating rink in 1996. Just Brilliant. The best part was seeing the joy on all the faces in the muddy crowd. Our communities really needed this.” Dr Luke said. “And here I am as your Independent candidate, still smiling, boots muddy, after what was an amazing night - and it’s election week. Just 6 months ago I had no intention of running, but then I decided that things have to change.

We talked politics while dancing, we talked politics in the carpark and we talked politics walking home. Our Northern Rivers youth are switched on. They know what is needed and what’s not being addressed by the current leaders speaking for them. Our young people are key to the future of our region and our planet. They are aware, compassionate, intelligent and level headed. They know their future depends on this election and it’s time for them to act too by voting for what they see as important; climate action, integrity in government, accessible housing, affordable and free education, job security, human rights and fair treatment, and better health services. What started with just a few men training at the Lennox Head Boat Channel has grown into a men’s health and exercise group who meet twice weekly (sometimes more) at 5.30am. Tuesdays and Thursdays, you’ll find them at ‘the Boaty’ with their kettlebells, goggles, towels, good chat and good laughs.
BC: Can you share a little bit about The Boaty Boys, how it started, who started it and what inspired it?
Though, The Boaty Boys are so much more than just a fitness
BC: What has The Boaty Boys grown to be? How often do you meet up / what do you do at these meet ups?
group. Throughout the recent and catastrophic floods in the Northern Rivers, these boys came together to rescue locals, assist with the clean up and support those in need. For days on end, The Boaty Boys made their way from Lennox to Wardell, Lismore, Broadwater, Woodburn and the list goes on anywhere they were needed, they showed up. With boats, buckets and the same feel-good attitude they bring each morning to their workouts, these boys aren’t just great friends, they’re all round great humans. I spoke with The Boaty Boys to find out more about what inspired the group, the benefits they experience from being part of it and how you can create something similar in your own community.

TBB: The Boaty Boys was started by a small bunch of guys that weren't too keen on gyms. We had all lived in the area for a long time but perhaps taken for granted what we have here in Lennox Head. One day we realised…”Wow, we have a really good canvas to train on”, so we did.
TBB: From the very first few crew, The Boaty Boys has grown to well over 30 guys now. Our official days are Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 5.30 am-6.30am but you will find any number of the lads down there seven days of the week. Our routine is mixed but our base includes using kettlebells. We do everything from shuttle runs up and down the boat channel, to a runswim-run at Lake Ainsworth, mobility training, breathwork through to meditation. We mix up our sessions but essentially, there will be a warmup, workout, core or fun activity, breathwork, meditation then we finish by jumping in the ocean.

BC: How do you believe The Boaty Boys benefits your mental health? TBB: The first thing is that there are no egos. It's just a fantastic bunch of males trying to better themselves personally. The thing we love is that nobody puts any responsibility on you for missing a session, but Photo: the sessions are that fun, if you miss one you get John Tozeland bummed out.
Class photo 12/05/22 @theboatyboys Plenty of great contributions from everyone on this mornings session. Nothing was planned, it was just on the fly and it ended up being a cracker workout.
“To be around men who wear their hearts and imperfections on their sleeves gives you the confidence to speak up if you are struggling with your own challenges.” Exercise is just a small part of what we do. It's a supportive brotherhood that uses exercise, informal chat, breathwork and meditation in equal doses to help normalise daily struggles. BC: Do you speak openly about mental health together at these sessions? How do you speak about it? TBB: While we might not speak about it with all 30 of us, you will often see guys talking to each other about whatever may be going on. I remember one of the lads said it was a breath of fresh air being able to speak around blokes and not to have the default response as a piss-take, but to have a real empathetic response to the struggles you're dealing with. It's not a formal set up but if you're struggling and someone asks "are you ok", you feel comfortable to say you’re Photo: John Tozeland not and can open up. BC: You’re about to partake in the Goggins Challenge - running 7km every 4 hours for 48 hours. What inspired this and what do you hope to achieve from doing this? TBB: David Goggins is an influential role model that inspires the group, through his determination and persistence which can be translated into the context of our lives as well. Through achieving this challenge we are all put through a gruelling journey together, we’re able to form bonds and increase our mental and physical resilience. It is about trying to push ourselves to the limit and supporting each other to the end. Plus it will be a barrel of laughs no doubt. BC: What change do you hope to see in the mental health space with men specifically? TBB: The singular lens of mental health being only a construct of the mind needs to change. Mental health needs to be considered holistically and encompass a biopsychosocial approach.
“How well we eat, move, sleep, think, feel and engage in a social setting and the environment around us is fundamental for greater health outcomes in the mental health space. ”

We have lost touch as a species and most look for a quick fix but soon realise this doesn't work and can often have adverse side effects. Adopting a more holistic approach with considerations of the whole is what's needed for a real shift in the mental health space. I think it is already starting to happen in our small town. The Healthy Minds Club was set up due to many of our friends losing their battle with mental health and The Boaty Boys allows space for men to come down and better themselves and their lives. The times of 'it is tough not to talk' are so far behind us now. This issue needs to be at the forefront of men's mental health. BC: What would you say to other communities who might want to start their own men’s health group? TBB: Just start and people will follow. Our motto down there is "The hardest part is turning up". That's what it's all about. Rolling out of bed and hitting the sand, seeing the sunrise, getting the heart rate up and finishing with a swim - you cannot beat that kind of start to the day!! To support The Boaty Boys in the Goggins Challenge, you can donate here. Funds will be used for organisations and individuals in need in their local community. To thank The Boaty Boys for their generosity, kindness and commitment to their community, Bonny Co has made a donation to the Bundjalung Community Flood Relief by Koori Mail as well as a donation to their HUGE efforts in the Goggins Challenge. HAVE YOUR SAY ON REBUILDING LISMORE
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS TO FLOOD FUND
The Lismore Flood Fund has reached another milestone with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) granting the fund tax deductibility status.
Council is seeking the community’s ideas and thoughts about how we can rebuild our city and community stronger and better than before the 28 February natural disaster and March flood. To help the discussion, we have released a Discussion Paper which is available to read at https://yoursay.lismore.nsw.gov.au/ The Discussion Paper provides some very broad brushstroke options, including possible land swaps as part of a planned retreat from the most flood-affected areas in North and South Lismore, a new commercial precinct and more medium density housing. We are also holding two public forums to get input on the Discussion Paper. They will be held at the Lismore Heights Sports Club on Monday, 23 May at 5.30pm and Wednesday, 25 May at 11.30am. Bookings are essential and can be made at https://yoursay.lismore.nsw.gov.au/ Written feedback can be provided until June 10, 2022 via https://yoursay.lismore.nsw.gov.au/

NEW COORDINATION BODY TO LEAD FLOOD REBUILDING EFFORT
It also creates greater certainty for our community as we recover from this natural disaster. “The new Corporation will have the power to acquire or subdivide land, and speed up and fast-track new buildings and planning proposals, which is exactly what our community wants and needs.” For more information, you can read our full article by clicking lismore.nsw.gov.au/news/newcoordination-body-to-lead-floodrebuilding-effort
The NSW Government announced today that it will establish a new body to lead the long-term reconstruction of our flood impacted community. The Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) will coordinate planning, rebuilding and construction work of essential services, infrastructure and housing across multiple government agencies to help people in the Northern Rivers to rebuild their homes businesses and lives as quickly as possible. Mayor Steve Krieg said a single coordinated approach is welcomed news for our community. The announcement comes after Council passed a motion earlier this month calling for a Reconstruction Corporation. Mayor Steve Krieg said: “A single coordinated approach means a faster process in approving our housing and social infrastructure which is key to our flood recovery.

Grinspoon guitarist Pat Davern said it felt amazing to be able to give something back to Lismore during such a tough time. "Hopefully it can go some way to repairing some of that mental and physical damage that's been done during this time," Davern said. "We went and had a look at the house Phil and I used to live in when we wrote all those Grinspoon songs and that went under. It was supposed to be flood-proof."
Davern said he knew people were taking a close look at how Lismore could be protected from floods in the future, but he hoped it would remain a "hotbed of creativity". "Sure it's a low socio-economic area, but a lot of artists and musicians and people like that are drawn to this part of Lismore and unfortunately this is the part of Lismore that gets so heavily affected by the floods," he said of the flood-prone areas.
"It's cheaper to live here but there's more going on and it would be devastating to lose that." LISMORE

An enormous thank you to anyone who donated directly or through the go fund me These funds went into replacing all bearings in our carousel so we could rebuild it, replace electronic components in our dryers, have them rebuilt and replacing as much printing equipment as possible! Our amazing suppliers @permaset_aqua & @leapfrog_inkspot have been incredibly supportive with their donations and were instrumental with getting us up and running. Forever grateful to @northwallco for giving us an old dryer, exposing some screens and printing cells for us so we could print shirts for @masochistpunk. Sparky Michael Michell who drove up from Newcastle days after the flood, rewired our light circuit so we could see! And got our dryer head working. Our resident sparky Scott Smith who you may have bumped into at our studios on a Saturday or Sunday for hardwiring our machines in. And thank you to everyone that helped clean. Especially the rest of the Nedlands family @nevcain @cate_64 & Elise It feels amazing and empowering to be back printing in our studio. Please hit us up with your screen printing jobs! No rush jobs tho! Our turnaround will be slow while we have post delays and continue to rebuild our home

Photograph: Raimond de Weerdt,
As Peter Hood put his 3.5m tinny in the water at the ‘boat ramp’ at Woolies on February 28, a young man called Riley offered to crew and Peter said hop in. Riley was a real blessing, Peter said. “I wouldn’t have been as useful without him, for sure. He was all over his communications, his phone, he knew people. He was getting messages off Facebook and was taking us to addresses.” Crossing the river, Peter remembers the fierce cross-currents and high speed of the water flowing between houses. Peter and Riley would ferry about 20 people from South Lismore over to the Ballina St Bridge that day. The day of rescuing was “fine”, Peter said, but it wasn’t until later that the scale of the disaster, and what it meant for so many people, hit him. One rescue that struck home was finding an old man with an eyepatch, standing knee-deep in water in the shadows on his verandah. He didn’t want to leave. “But we got him out of there. I said ‘mate, I’ll share a beer with you if you come with us’. He said alright and he went to get his cat.” Peter took him to the bridge. “It was only the next day that I thought he didn’t have anywhere to go. No wonder he wanted to stay in his home. I don’t know where he is now. That’s what hit me.”

Peter’s emotions rise as he remembers taking aboard a mother with her baby: “She was thankful to be rescued but as we left the house, she realised she was in a little boat getting bucked around and we weren’t there yet. Her baby’s head was nodding, she was concerned. I could see the baby’s face and I could see she was falling asleep. I said, ‘She’s just gone to sleep’, and she said, ‘Fine, sleep. I can handle that’. That was my most memorable moment.” Peter and Riley ended their day shell-shocked and each went their own way. Peter regrets never exchanging numbers with his young crew. Can you help locate Riley this week? Peter has an invitation for him to come to Peter and Di’s wedding on May 21. We would also like to talk to people they rescued in South Lismore for our portraiture project capturing members of the civilian Tinny Brigade. Please get in touch with Jeanti St Clair or Raimond De Weerdt if you were rescued or if you can recommend a civilian rescuer to be photographed. This is for a public documentation project about the February 28 flood. Update: Thanks to the power of Facebook sharing, Peter has connected up with Riley, whose surname is Hughes. And Riley has an invite to the wedding! Wrap with Love Wrap with Love is an Australian charitable organisation, founded in 1992 by Sonia Gidley-King, OAM, to produce knitted wraps (used as blankets) as gifts for people who have exposed to the cold and susceptible to hypothermia and especially those who have experienced loss and trauma as a result of war. The wraps are knitted, transported and assembled by volunteers. Over 30,000 volunteers around Australia have been involved in the project and more than a quarter of a million woollen wraps have been produced. The wraps are created by knitting 28 equally sized squares in garter stitch, sewn together into blankets of 4 x 7 squares. Although simple, this formula allows for an almost unlimited variety and the resulting wrap is a unique possession for its final owner. Some wraps incorporate a single stylised kangaroo as a symbol of their origin.
A handknitted "Wrap with Love" blanket on display at Engadine library.
In 2003, ABC Sydney Radio Station 702 ABC Sydney and ABC Local Radio created the "knit in", so named after the "sit-in" form of direct action protest, to support the movement and increase awareness of the Wrap with Love cause. Presenter Angela Catterns is credited with the "Knit-In" idea. Other knitting events have been held at a variety of community halls and local libraries across the country.
The KNIT IN Story
By Angela Catterns
From Angela Catterns to knitting world records - this is the KNIT IN story. In 2003, when I was presenting Breakfast on 702, I started to knit. It was all because my daughter - then a big Harry Potter fan -was going on a 'Hogwart's' train to celebrate the launch of the latest book and she needed a scarf in Gryffindor colours. Then I knitted one for my darling father, who was in hospital at the time. I talked about my knitting endevours on the radio. I then did an interview about men knitting in pubs and another one with the author of a book on the resurgence of interest in the "domestic arts".

Soon after the interview, Barbara Holborow the former Children's Court Magistrate rang the show one day and told us about this charity which she knitted for, called Wrap with Love. Talking on the radio about knitting unleashed a flood of calls and correspondence from listeners who loved to knit. In consultation with the marketing department, we decided to hold a listener event involving knitting. At first, the idea was for a knitting competition - the details were being worked out when I went away on a short holiday.

While I was away, I read a magazine article about Wrap with Love. It occurred to me that we could harness all the goodwill and knitting prowess of the 702 listeners in support of this wonderful charity. And the listener event could be a KNIT IN (a variation on a LoveIn!) - we need to get everyone together one morning and knit. No competition, no prizes, just a gathering of listeners interested in knitting for a worthwhile cause. And so the Knit-In was born.
