‘humanistic youth centre’

Š grey canopy pte ltd

the humanistic youth centre (hyc) is a non-profit startup by the tzu chi foundation (singapore) that aims to be a platform for young people to realise wholesome values and contribute towards a sustainable community. it is a one-stop location for young people to gather, meet new friends, learn positive values, and be inspired. the design concept drew inspiration from the approach and importance of fundamentals in life hence creating spaces that showcase rawness in materiality and building techniques.

‘the daily cut’ the daily cut has a vision of making healthy food uncomplicated, so people could focus on living a healthy life. their slogan, ‘build your own bowl’, sets out to assure their patrons that any choice made to their meal will be a good one. © the daily cut

however, due to the overwhelming lunch crowd, the client wishes to find methods to improve the workflow and also to allow smooth and comfortable transactions for the patrons. inspired by the slogan, the space approached the concept of ‘build your own story.’ a curated journey where patrons know what they’re consuming, choose and decide what they want to consume and act on it. the space uses a more muted colour scheme as the client wishes to have the colour of the food displayed as the primary focus.

‘la mensa’ la mensa is an italian restaurant that specialises in its pasta. the concept of the restaurant is based on a fictional persona named la mensa. la mensa is a 24-year-old female, with an italian father and a singaporean mother. © grey canopy pte ltd

she spent most of her childhood in italy with her father’s side of the family and moved to singapore when she was 15 years old. la mensa, like her father, loves to cook. therefore, growing up, she has always loved sundays. it’s the only day of the week when the whole family gets together to cook and dine. opening a restaurant has always been her dream. in this restaurant, she wishes to showcase her italian heritage in her mother’s homeland. the design drew inspiration from street coffee shops in italy where nature-inspired textures and earthy colour palette make up the ambience of the space.

‘the spot’ Š grey canopy pte ltd

the brief of the project is to design a staff lounge area cum smoking room within the airside. the lounge area is to serve as a rejuvenating and communal rest area for airside personnel to unwind, interact and consume their meals. surrounded by dull industrial metallic surfaces, the spot serves a getaway that radiates vibrant and positive energy. the vibrancy has been reflected through the application of bright colours and dynamic elements into the design.

‘less is more’ the intent of ‘less is more’ is to explore the relationship between possession and material detach starting by looking into the physical aspect of a person’s needs. it all began with the polemic ( less is more ) that had been set out in response to the housing crisis that has unfortunately become one of the forefronts of today’s global agenda. it experimented with ways in which minimalism could lift people to contentment and freedom, encouraging ways of dwelling comfortably with less and through the investigation, the concept was further expressed into an installation design. the design aimed to represent the opportunities living with less by using shadow to represent the living space and moveable blocks as the idea of communal living.

this collage portrays how by tohaving less could offer great opportunities individuals. for instance, provides offer to live less could italso more dwellings and encourages a diverse great opportunities. as it communal living such could provide more dwellings and also encourages a communal living.

the concept was further expressed into an installation where an object(balloon) is placed on the rooftop (to represent being lifted) and using its shadow on the ground to represent the living space.

the ground installation is based on a series of characters and the amount of space per cube they occupy in a living space. 2 cubes being the least, 4 being the most.

cubes are being translated into moveable blocks where it does not only serve as a playground for the children but also to represent the idea of communal living where these individuals move around to interact with their neighbours.

spatial configuration that shows the (writer) yellow blocks on the platform being the private space. communal space is represented with the moving blocks on the ‘outside’ being on the sand pit showing other characters interacting with each other. Which in another way represents the communal space.

‘lesson learnt’ in today’s society, success and happiness tend to be defined by how much people possess. consequently, materialism and consumerism have become an unsustainable and enslaving part of culture and interpersonal relationships. ‘ lesson learnt ‘ is a transitional place to help the victims of materialism to break away from this belief system. similarly, it is a rehab dedicated to materialists and oniomaniacs (compulsive shoppers) to rebuild their lives following addiction. the design draws inspiration from a monastic programme of rehab, where form and materiality inspired it to be built as humbly and naturally as possible. additionally, it creates an immersive experience of being connected to nature. as the site, regency town house was the epitome of consumerism, the approach of the design aimed to strip off the lavish decorations and emphasise the remaining rawness and fundamental qualities of the site.

“ MATERIALISM BREEDS DISCONTENTMENT ” - J.K GALBRAITH

" THE CULT OF MATERIALISM " “ MATERIALISM HAS BRAINWASHED US INTO BELIEVING THAT OUR ROLE AS A PRODUCTIVE CITIZEN IS TO CONSUME MORE AND MORE EVERY YEAR, EVEN IF WE HAVE TO GO INTO DEBT TO DO IT. WE’VE STRUCTURE OUR ECONOMY AROUND THE CULT OF MATERIALISM. WE’RE ALL DEPENDENT ON IT, IT HAS BECOME OUR MASTER.”

‘the teahouse’ the intention of the project is to propose a symbiont space to the host, newhaven library located at newhaven, east sussex. the high street of newhaven used to be the community hub of the town back in the days. however, due to several factors, the connection of the town with its residents had gradually dissipated.

This studio looks into proposing a symbiont space to the existing building (Newhaven Library) where the programmes will cross path and they will either benefit, harm or have no effect on one another. The ‘Teahouse’ project concentrates on creating a sense of connectivity within the community through a mutualistic relationship with the host.

‘ the teahouse ‘ concentrated on creating a sense of connectivity within the community through tea as its ceremonies are a social event known to bring people of different backgrounds together. tea culture is defined by the way tea is made and consumed. the project uses this definition to form the activities in the space.

‘ past, present, future

this project is an installation where it enables people to experience being in different timelines. i.e., the past, present, future. located at newhaven, the newhaven fort was built in the 19th century to defend the harbour. the emotional experience during the site visit had inspired the design installation to allow visitors to experience the darkness of war in the past and the brightness that comes after it.
