2019 is the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans who were brought to North America against their will and sold as slaves.
The Africans were originally from the Ndongo Kingdom in what is now Angola. They were a few of thousands taken and transported in ships carrying 350 people at once by Portuguese armies during efforts to claim Ndongo lands and gold for Portugal.
One of the ships was the San Juan Bautista. On its journey, it was raided by two British pirate ships near Vera Cruz, Mexico. Expecting to find gold, the British were surprised by human cargo. About 60 Africans were split between the two ships and headed for Virginia.
