HOW WE DO IT JXTA provides training and employment for young artists ages 14-21 in five revenue-earning art and social enterprise studios called JXTALabs. After successful completion of VALT (Visual Art Literacy Training), a free, rigorous 12-week visual art course, young artists become eligible to apply for an apprenticeship in one of the JXTALabs. As an apprentice, they get hands-on experience working on client projects – clients like you.

Malee Vue captured the essence of Fall in this custom decoration; Textiles & Screen Printing apprentices brought the canvas tote bags to life with the designs.
Inspired by colorful cartoons, DJ Bryant’s illustrated mural was installed in vinyl on Morrie’s Minnetonka Subaru’s kids’ playroom wall.

North Arrow sculpture & bike racks Team : Dean Leach and Chango Cummings (Environmental Design Apprentices)
Re-imagining the built environment through intentional design.
Enviro lab provided new public works for the Hennepin County Services Hub building in 2014. Chango Cummings designed this large-scale public sculpture, framing the nearby downtown Minneapolis skyline. Initial concepts were collaboratively designed in Enviro lab and shared with community members; feedback informed the final designs, materials, and installation.

A modular, infinitely-growable, super-fun publicseating sculpture-scape. Make public gathering places with HEXTRA x JXTA, designed and constructed in collaboration between apprentices in Enviro Lab and Lazor office. Infinitely configurable to fit any office, public, retail, or other gathering space.

JXTA Textiles Lab has screen printed the legendary First Avenue’s t-shirt merchandise since 2017. Custom designs include the MN outline decorated with the iconic First Avenue stars and purple Prince MN t-shirts.

Guthrie Theater and Mill City Museum hired JXTA to create a locally-iconic keepsake for visiting tourists. So, Graphics Lab designed a colorful depiction of the riverfront, and Textiles Lab produced baby blue and beige t-shirts emblazoned with the unique design.
Notes of ginger, turmeric, and lemon characterize a custom-brewed “JXTA Golden Ale,� produced and sold for a limited time at Dangerous Man Brewing Co. in Fall 2018. A limited run of t-shirts printed by Textiles & Screen Printing apprentices featured the custom logo designed by Graphics Lab.

Rojo Mexican Grill (Downtown, Minneapolis)
Illustrated murals Team: Patricio De Lara (Graphic Design Apprentice), Greta Kotz (Teaching Artist)
Large-scale public art installations & custom commissioned projects.
Inspired by Mexican history and iconography, Patricio De Lara designed two murals for the newly opened Rojo Mexican Grill in Spring 2019. Both were digitally illustrated, one mounted on vinyl, and the other hand-painted by De Lara and teaching designer Greta Kotz.
Minneapolis Local Organizing Committee North Commons custom decorative mural Team : Alex Smith (Teaching Artist) In 2018 and 2019, the Minneapolis Local Organizing Committee commissioned JXTA for a series of projects in conjunction with the Minneapolis-hosted Men’s Final Four Tournament in April 2019. As part of the renovation of North Commons Recreation Center funded by the Final Four, JXTA teaching artist Alex Smith custompainted a mural for the gymnasium space. The youth for whom the facility was built are now featured on a fullscale mural in the basketball court’s Western wall.

In 2018 and 2019, the Minneapolis Local Organizing Committee commissioned JXTA for a series of projects in conjunction with the Minneapolis-hosted Men’s Final Four Tournament in April 2019. As part of the renovation of North Commons Recreation Center funded by the Final Four, JXTA Graphics Lab designed an energetic mural embodying the ideals of education and creativity to decorate a teen recreational space.

Community engagement research for the renovation of North Regional Library Team : Tactical Urbanism Lab
In preparation for a large-scale renovation of North Regional Library, JXTA’s Tactical Lab led a series of engagement activities to gather input from the community and inform the renovation. Informational didactics posed questions for visitors to provide feedback.
Downtown Improvement District
Nicollet Mall research & activation design Team : Tactical Urbanism Lab
Tactical apprentices engaged Nicollet Mall through observation, mapping, and conversation with Mall users in 2013-2014. Through this, they identified opportunities for addressing issues and concerns and proposed several intervention strategies, ultimately prototyping and launching a fleet of Mobile Engagement Units. These pedal-powered stations for art-making, games, music, light, and conversation were used for activations along the Mall.
JXTA (Internal Project) Hello Northside Gift Box creation & distribution Team : Tactical Urbanism Lab We flipped the script on subscription boxes. In the winter of 2018, Tactical Lab put together a wellness kit filled with items including sage for clarity, a water bottle, a pen and planner, and touch stones for positive energies to distribute to our Northside neighbors. The boxes’ decorative elements were inspired by the Adinkra symbol meaning “Pempamsie” (“sew in readiness”) and were designed and printed in-house by Graphics, Textiles, and Tactical Labs.
