MASONRY REPOINTING SPECIFICATION SAND SHOULD BE OF A COLOR, TEXTURE, AND PARTICLE SIZE TO MATCH THE ORIGINAL MORTAR IN APPEARANCE. IF COLOR ADDITIVES ARE NEEDED, CHEMICALLY PURE SYNTHETIC OXIDE PIGMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED (WHICH ARE ALKALI PROOF AND SUN FAST). LIME AND PORTLAND CEMENT SHOULD BE MIXED WITH THE SAND IN A PROPORTION THAT RESULTS IN A MORTAR SOFTER THAN THE MASONRY BEING REPOINTED. REPOINTING SHOULD ONLY TAKE PLACE WHEN THE EXTERIOR TEMPERATURE REMAINS A CONSTANT 45 DEGREES F OR ABOVE 5'-5 1/2" FOR A 72-HOUR PERIOD FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF WORK, OTHERWISE THE MORTAR WILL NOT PROPERLY CURE.

Route 99’s Greenstop seek to bring sustainability in concept and practice to transit through the San Joaquin Valley. With the guidelines of the LEED program, this new rest stop reconsiders every aspect of travel and personal convenience to create a space of removal from the highway that is self sustaining, educational, and a model for future rest stops and convenience buildings across the nation. The site, located just outside Tulare County, will be rehabilitated, renewed, and improved with the Greenstop proposal. Roughly 80 to 90% of the existing circulation through the site and existing matured vegetation are reused. The buildings will be relocated to the center of the site, providing safer access for all users. The orientation of the buildings is used to discretely separate the truck parking from the car parking, as well as maximize exposure to natural breezes and minimize direct exposure from the sun.

Concept Sketches
New pavement to be added to the site is porous, reducing rainwater runoff and heat island effect. Existing vegetation at the proposed building locations will be relocated. New vegetation will be placed throughout to develop the site spatially, restore habitat, and promote biodiversity, and all new vegetation will be region friendly to reduce maintenance costs and water consumption. Alternative refueling stations and preferred parking will be provided to support and encourage green transit.
45
Existing storm water management, well water systems, and sewage ponds will be used, rehabilitated, and supplemented as necessary. Potential additional water sources include rainwater harvesting from the building roofs as well as the natural spring that runs adjacent to the site. A gray water system will be installed to reduce potable water consumption and low flow/waterless fixtures are installed to reduce overall water consumption.
01
02
04
In order to heat and cool the building, a geothermal system will be placed below the new buildings to minimize use of other energy sources. This is especially practical with the low number of heating/cooling days in the year.

Energy is provided to the site from multiple renewable sources. Solar panels will be placed sporadically throughout the site, integrated with trash and recycling receptacles and refueling stations, to gather energy and shade picnic and parking areas. While solar panels will provide most of the energy necessary, wind turbines will be located at the off ramp into the site to provide an additional energy source as well as a landmark. Travelers would begin to associate the icon and “green” aspect of the turbine with the rest stops and their progress towards green transit.

The Greenstop buildings will be constructed of a double layer wall system to help cool and insulate them well. Also, operable windows allow cross ventilation cooling during the appropriate months and create a more pleasant indoor environment. The double wall layer allows a unique opportunity to vary the materials used from site to site. Each set of buildings can be clad in a different sustainable material, keeping the dimensions and window locations the same for ease of production, this could include zinc panels and certified wood panels.
