Public Park Site Ecology studio, 2014.32014.5 I-95 Parcel, Providence, RI.

WEAVE The site locates in the middle of a commercial and residential mixed area along the I95 highway at the Providence part. The goal of the design is to enrich the social activities on the site with interactive transition areas between functional spaces and habitats created for Ruby-throated hummingbirds, which fits well in urban area and favored by local people. By manipulating the landform and making a proper selection of vegetation, the park attracts hummingbirds which will attract people to the site and increase the possibilities of social activities.

The site locates along the Riverside in Providence which enable the habitat for wetland plants that attract ruby-throated humming birds. So the idea of this park is to work as one chain of the whole humming bird migration rounte.

The site locates in the middle of a commercial and industrial mixed area, the building patterns and construction fields bring about the periodly strong wind and sands go wtih the wind cause problems. By planting design and manipulating landform, the project tries to control the microclimate and creates active spaces for both birds and residents as well as guide people’s views.

HABITAT REQUIRMENTS OF RUBY-THROATED HUMMING BIRD

The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a species of hummingbird that generally spends the Winter in Central America and migrates to Eastern North America for the Summer to breed. --Wikipedia

Since Ruby-throated Humming Birds are easy to be attracted by showy flowers and will help to pollinate, a proper selection of vegetation planted close to the functional spaces will benefit both the habitat environment and aesthetic effect of the city, which also creates transition area for people to interact with other species. Within a larger range, the strategy of creating habitats by vegetation could be further extent with the backyards in residential area, thus to form a habitat corridor.


SITE PLAN

Manipulated landform helps guide the air flows to planting areas where high trees break the wind into breeze. Platforms in different scales are created through the variety of landform which provides different possibilities for different groups. Plants and landforms together help guide the view directions of the visitors.

UNDER STREETS In year 2050, sea level rise will affect waterfront area partly while flood surge will affect inland area largely from different direction according to the existing topography. The site includes several streets connecting harbors near South Station to the southeast corner of Boston Common. In the proposal, underground spaces are explored to help increase the water capacity of the city in respond to the sea level rise. Convergencies and water connections are built to form a network.

TRANSPORTATION SITE ANALYSIS

A large number of historical landmarks are located along the Freedom Trail, which attracts tourists as well as local residents.

Land use greatly affects how and where local people gather and move in their daily life. Commercial areas, mixed use areas, and green spaces are considered to be public areas that are more accessible and important than others from the aspect of public life.

Space dimensions affect the space qualities of public areas. Streets that are neither too narrow nor too broad provide good walking experience which will increase people’s willingness to come to the public areas. The movement records of people also indicate the significance of transportation because it directly shows people’s preferences for different public areas and transportation usage.


WATER FLOW DIRECTIONS

Watersheds and low-elevation points are identified, which indicate areas that are flooded first as sea levels rise. Also, an understanding of water flow directions helps decide the locations to stop water from entering the proposed protected areas with the greatest efficiency.

The prototypes can be divided into three types: Convergence Main Connection Secondary Connection

Convergencies work as plazas and public playgrounds for people and water storage facilities when flooding. Connections locate at relatively broader sidewalks and small foregrounds of buildings and strategies such as rain garden are invited in this prototype to help promote the water qualities as well as seperate pedestrians with vehicles.

Sanitary Landfill Renovation Graduation Project, 2013.12013.6 Beishenshu Sanitary Landfill Station,Bejing, China.

RE-GENERATOR Beishenshu Sanitary Landfill Station is the biggest landfill station in Beijing, which is now prepared for closing and renovation. In the proposal, the sanitary landfill station aims to redevelop itself into a public recreation park as well as an educational foundation. The project process are divided into four phase due to the continuing settlement of the organic landfill and the remediation of the damaged soil. Under this consideration, programmes aim at different target are introduced into the site, including running paths, playgrounds, art galleries, museums, gyms, etc. Besides arboretum, artificial wetlands and experimental plots also work as a part of planting exhibition towards the public.

Historical Figure Ground The surrounding pattern of transportation is changed gradually to coordinate with the boundaries of the sanitary station and the new built high-ways. Also the figure ground near the site are broken.

Underground Pipe Locations Technique Requirements Beishenshu Landfill will face the problem of continuing settlement and the release of methane gas because of the decompostition of the organic wastes. Also, since the landfill station has not been closed completely, certain sizes and location on site are required to be preserved for different functions before 2020.


WASTE DISPOSE SYSTEM & AFFECTED COMMUNITIES

Beishenshu Landfill Sanitary Station locates in an industrial and resedential mixed area. During the oprating years the odour of the landfill affected the neighborhood seriously and decrease the value of the surrounding lands. So by changing it into a public park, the surrounding area will also be benefited.

Regarding the settlement of the landfill station and the investment limits, in the four different phases, the ownership and programs varies along with the grading and working locations. Phase 1 basically works on ground, phase 2 on the top of the Landfill Pile, Phase 3 works on the west side and Phase 4 works on the east side.

PROGRAMMING & VEGETATION

In earlier phases, the composition of the ground are not stable and the elevation will continuingly lowing down. So the earlier programmes are mainly walk paths and open greens. Later when most of the organic wastes are decomposed completely, programmes such as playgrounds and constructions will be built on the site.

04 School Fundation Design Principles, 2013.92013.11 Blackstone Park, Providence,RI.

SPACE DANCE The site locates at blackstone park where is an existing green space near a predominantly residential neighborhood and Lincoln School. The goal of the design is to create spaces for the residents and students in different ages and enable people to get better access to the lake. To create access to the water, the project build a path along the boundary of the inner lake and shape it like a ribbon that connects spaces created for different needs. The views are guided as the arrangement of plants will block the sight in certen direction. However, for the consideration of safety, the views of main spaces are connceted over the inner lake.

CONCEPT MODEL MODULE CONNECTION

Created by the shape and density of plants, the space characters change in different parts of the site. Five specific spots are selected based on them. In the design, the strategies is to exaggrate and promote the quality of these spaces and connect them together.

A module is made to simulate the view scope from people’s standing spot. When assembling several modules together, the condition of view sight of a space can be identified by the model.

SPACIAL EXPERIENCE SEQUENCE VIEWSHED

Plants and constructions are used to create different space qualities, which may satisfy visiors in different needs. Several wallking paths are created as a corridor so visitors can experience a change of space and view sight, from an open space to a narrow one and then again to the open. These sequences help exaggrate the original characters of the space.

05 Amusement Park Renovation Advance Studio, 2014.92014.11 Rocky Point Park, Warwick,RI.

LANDSCAPE MEMO Rocky Point Amusement Park used to be one of the favourite outing destination of Rhode Island. After being closed down for 30 years, it will reopen to the public, trying to meet both the need of the new generation as well as recall the valuable memories of the elders. In the proposal, the abandoned water tower was rebuilt to provide platforms that enable a panorama view of the whole park. Two paths are designed to access the water tower which promote the adventural experience of the entire visit, by making responces to the topography, materials and vegetation on site.

In the Rocky Point Amusement Park, the light house used to be a landmark in the park. Then the light house was torn down and the remnant was used as the base of a water tower. When the Amusement Park closed because of bankrupt, the water tower base again became a relic of the park.

In memory of the used favourite destination spot on Rhode Island, when reopen the park to the public, the rebuilding of some part of the original site are supposed to be meaningful in the proposal. Rather than rebuild the light house as it was, the proposal plans to build a new tower with several platforms which enable the visitors to view the panarom of the garden and enrich their visiting experience during the tour.


VIEW ANALYSIS PLATFORM PLANS

The new light house locates in the center of the interest spots, which provides a good opportunity for the visitors to view the whole sight of the park. The shape of the platforms are set according to the view directions toward the interest spots.

Part of Path 2 is curved into the ground to present the change of topography for visitors. 56

06 Ecology Club Design Ecology Studio, 2011.92011.11 Tianjin Province, China

GREENHOUSE The site locates in Tianjin Province where the sunlight is strong in day time and the temperature turns very low in nights. Due to this reason, the design tries to turn the club into a greenhouse-club mixed building rather than a traditional one. Similar with the principle of Photosynthesis, the greenhouse provides fresh air and takes extra heat from both outside and inside, thus works as a temperature conditioner for the whole building. With photosynthesis, plants and people build an interactive relationship which forms a circulation. Also, the greenhouse is used to gether the energy and plants to condition it.

Plants outside, greenhouse, plants inside form three layers of conditioners and protectors for people inside the building. The building itself also investigate eco-technology to help create a comfortable environment for both plants and people.

Waterfront Topic Representation, 2013.9 I-95 Parcel, Providence, RI.

VIEW STRIPES The site locates on the bank of Providence River and faces with the abandoned piers, which provides great opportunities for a combination of natural bank habitat with artificial works. In the design, the straight-up sunflowers are selected as the siginificant element on site and sculptural paths are create to highlight the paths to them. The shape of the paths are designed in respond to the existing topography and underground constructions.

INK The site locates inside Tsinghua University. The now existing swimming pools used to be part of a govern garden and now it is turning into a memorial park. In the memory of the five masters in Chinese cultural, the concept of ink are integrate into the design. Althgou hard and sharp in dry air, it turns soft and dynamic in the water. So in the design, the forms above and under water form a strong contrast to impress the visitors.

The memorial park take advantage of the existing swimming pools and renovates it as a landscape sculpture. Four Master Gardens are settled around the cental pool to show honor to the four masters contributing to Chinese Culture. The shape square is used as a motif that indicate the Chinese quality.
