K-State head football coach Bill Snyder has brought many of us some of our greatest K-State memories. Chances are you’ve celebrated many of his wins, cheered on the ‘Cats at one of his 16 bowl berths, or watched as he engineered what has become known as the greatest turnaround in college football history. For years, Coach Snyder has been developing leaders through football. Coach Snyder’s legacy, however, far surpasses his work on the football field. It is because of his commitment to leadership that the Staley School of Leadership Studies is excited to partner with K-State Athletics to offer a leadership development program that honors Coach Snyder’s work in developing a family of leaders: the Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellows. The Snyder Fellows program extends to students the opportunity for personal and professional development based on Coach Snyder’s 16 Goals for Success. These 16 Goals have been embraced by many as guiding principles for success in life, family, career, and community. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop change agents on campus, in the community, throughout the state, and beyond. Our hope is to prepare students for the transition from college and for engagement as lifelong leaders.
COACH SNYDER’S 16 GOALS FOR SUCCESS 1. Commitment
To common goals and to being successful.
2. Unselfishness There is no “I” in team.

Your very, very best every time.

Everyone can set the example.
16. Responsibility
You are responsible for your performance.
THE PROGRAM “KICKS OFF”
The program launched in May 2015 with a twoday event, during which 37 students entering their final year at K-State were inducted into the inaugural class of Snyder Fellows. On May 27, the Fellows met for the first time at the K-State Honors House. Throughout their two days together, the Fellows connected and worked with faculty members, business leaders, successful athletes, and scholars who helped them develop goals to advance their leadership abilities both personally and professionally. Fellows spent the first part of day one participating in several team building exercises and getting to know their peers. They spent the remaining part of the day at Bramlage Coliseum, where they learned more about Coach Snyder’s leadership legacy and had the opportunity to hear from previous K-State football players and supporters of the program.
“My favorite thing about the Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellows program is the people who were selected. I’ve never met a more positive, energetic, intelligent, and motivated group of individuals. I feel humbled by the experience because I am working with some of K-State’s best student leaders in a program that honors the legacy of, arguably, the most influential coach in college football history.” - Isabel Miller, Snyder Fellow
FIRESIDE CHAT
At the end of the first day, the Snyder Fellows had a chance to engage in a “fireside chat” with Coach Snyder and Robert Shoop, Ph.D. Along with Susan Scott, Ph.D., Shoop authored Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder, the book that serves as the guiding curriculum for the program.
“I think the most meaningful part of my experience in this program so far was when Coach Snyder joined us for a fireside chat. He told us that in life you are never stagnant. He spoke about how being committed to the present task and getting better every day is the key to finding success.” - Joshua Banwart, Snyder Fellow
“Know that you have done something very special . . . I was truly caught up by the genuine caring, passion, and . - Coach Bill Snyder

COACH SNYDER’S 16 GOALS FOR SUCCESS The Fellows spent most of day two learning about Coach Snyder’s 16 Goals for Success. In accordance with Goal #5: Be Tough, the day started with a 6 AM workout with several K-State football players. The players led the Fellows in a series of drills that are consistent with their own workouts. Coach Snyder also attended the workout session and discussed the importance of physical health. The remainder of day two was spent at the Leadership Studies Building, where former K-State football player Kevin Lockett talked to the Fellows about how Coach Snyder and the 16 Goals have influenced his life, personally and professionally. The Fellows were also asked to start thinking about their own goals for the upcoming year and make a plan for achieving them.
“Being able to connect with Coach Snyder has been the coolest part of this experience. It is amazing to think that he has stood true to his 16 Goals for so long. Seeing and hearing about how each of these goals related to some of the people he’s impacted has helped me determine how I want these goals to play out in my life.” - Shelby Dinkel, Snyder Fellow

FELLOWS RECONVENE FOR SECOND EVENT On Friday, September 18, the Snyder Fellows met at the Leadership Studies Building for their second event of the year. The focus of the evening was on both civic engagement and professional development. Kevin Lockett joined the Fellows, for the second time this year, to discuss the nonprofit organization he and his family started in 1998, the Lockett-Up Foundation. The goal of the organization is to increase academic achievements for atrisk and disadvantaged youth. For the remainder of the evening, the Fellows focused on professional development. Mindy Weixelman of the K-State Foundation joined the Fellows to discuss the power of networking. After hearing from Mindy, the Fellows attended Spirit of Leadership, the Staley School’s signature alumni and friends event, where they had the opportunity to practice their new networking skills and discuss their experiences at K-State and in the Snyder Fellows program. The Fellows were also recognized at the Spirit of Leadership event for their work in the program so far.
FELLOWS RECOGNIZED AT K-STATE FOOTBALL GAME On Saturday, September 19, the Snyder Fellows Class of 2015 was recognized during the second quarter of the K-State football game versus Louisiana Tech. Prior to the game, the Fellows met for food and games at a tailgate event, along with their families, supporters of the program, and faculty and staff members of the Staley School of Leadership Studies. The group also had the opportunity to watch the game in the Ahearn Fund Student-Athlete Performance Table, an area on the west side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium that overlooks the football field.
“Having the opportunity to watch the football game in the Performance Table area with the rest of the inaugural class of Snyder Fellows was so exciting. It was a day we were all able to experience together, which helped us bond and get to know each other even better. It was also a great reminder of why we’re in this program - because of the inspirational work of Coach Snyder.” - Grace Works, Snyder Fellow
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
The purpose of the Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellows program is to provide students with opportunities for personal and professional development throughout their final year of undergraduate study. In addition to their time spent together in May, September, and April, the Fellows have many other opportunities for leadership development throughout the 2015-2016 academic year and beyond.
ONE-ON-ONE COACHING SESSIONS
In an effort to mirror Coach Snyder’s dedication to personal growth and leadership development, the Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellows program provides Fellows another outlet for growth through one-on-one “coaching” sessions. Coaches include Staley School of Leadership Studies faculty members Marcia Hornung, Mike Finnegan, Tamara Bauer, Trisha Gott, Chance Lee, Mary Kay Siefers, Andy Wefald, and Theo Stavropoulos. Kiley Moody from New Student Services and Amanda Lee from the K-State Alumni Association also serve as coaches. The goal of the coaching sessions is to allow opportunities for development that align with the Coach Snyder’s 16 Goals for success. The sessions are student driven with each Fellow setting the agenda with his or her session in order to personalize the experience.
“Coaching sessions have been such an awesome way for me to have an outlet for talking about and mapping what is next for me after I graduate in May. The whole idea of graduation is exciting but yet a little overwhelming. So far, these sessions have been a great way for me to feel more confident and prepared for whatever is next.” - Kylie Sturgis, Snyder Fellow.
EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITIES Throughout the program, Snyder Fellows experience exclusive personal and professional development activities. On Friday, September 5, 2015, former K-State football players Jordy Nelson, Darren Sproles, and Michael Bishop were inducted into the K-State Ring of Honor during the home football game against South Dakota. The previous afternoon, the Snyder Fellows had the opportunity to attend a Q&A session with the 2015 inductees. Each of the former K-State football players shared stories about how Coach Snyder’s16 Goals for Success influenced their own lives as undergraduates and in their personal and professional lives beyond college. Additional activities will be held throughout the academic year.
MENTORING AND SERVICE Coach Snyder has been an avid supporter of service work and has often emphasized the importance of service in the community and mentoring relationships. In Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder, Snyder is quoted saying, “I think it is very important to get young people to develop leadership skills so that they can go out into the community and provide leadership aimed at improving society.” In September 2015, the Fellows began working with the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan to mentor local youth by leading activities centered on Coach Snyder’s 16 Goals for Success. Fellows will continue to work with this organization and others throughout the year.
LOOKING AHEAD
As the school year progresses, the Snyder Fellows will engage in ongoing leadership development through participation in service-learning activities and one-on-one coaching sessions with Staley School faculty members Tamara Bauer, Mike Finnegan, Trisha Gott, Marcia Hornung, Chance Lee, Mary Kay Siefers, Theo Stavropoulos, and Andy Wefald. Kiley Moody from New Student Services and Amanda Lee from the K-State Alumni Association also serve as coaches. The Snyder Fellows will reconvene as a group in April 2016. At that time, we will welcome the next class of Snyder Fellows and begin to build our network of program alumni as the Class of 2015 prepares for their transition from college and for engagement as lifelong leaders. We will begin accepting applications for the Snyder Fellows Class of 2016 in January. The Snyder Leadership Legacy Fellows program is made possible by the support and investment of the founding advisory group: Bill Snyder, Chad Faulkner, Robert Krause, Steve Miller, General Richard Myers, Deb Richard, Bob Shoop, and Susan Scott, as well as our dedicated coaches.
