The reputation of Colbert Hills as that really big course out in Kansas is attracting players from across the country that want to test their skills against one of the nation's toughest courses. The dream of Colbert Hills goes back to 1994 when Senior PGA Tour great Jim Colbert, an alumnus of Kansas State, got involved with a project to help the school build a university-run course, a place where the Kansas State golf team could train and where the school could train golf course superintendents and managers and do research on turfgrass. The university's vision and that of Jim Colbert was that the project would also be a public daily fee course and one where disadvantaged children could learn the game of golf. Colbert found the perfect site, 300 acres in the Flint Hills area on the northwest edge of Manhattan. An alumnus who was grazing cattle on this site donated the property, and Colbert donated a half million dollars. Soon other donors signed on. Jim Colbert combined with well-known Dallas architect Jeffrey Brauer to lay out the $11 million course. “God built about 14 of the holes, and we built about four of them,” Colbert said. “I hope you can't tell the difference.” Colbert Hills opened officially in May 2000 with a bevy of golfing celebrities on hand, including Lee Trevino, Ray-

the Black and Blue tees. It lies on a superb site of rolling hills with changes in elevation that most Americans had no idea could exist in the prairies of Kansas. Colbert Hills includes a new clubhouse, state of the art driving range and enough acreage for a nine-hole teaching course, as well as a host of research and academic opportunities for K-State researchers and students. Colbert Hills has become the first PGA Tour collegiate licensed facility. With a world-class golf course, the university will restructure the turf program, making it one of the best in the world. Today, K-State offers a specialized degree in turf management and has separated itself from all other turf programs in the nation by expanding its curriculum to include all aspects of the profession, including business administration and hospitality. Graduates are now effectively prepared in the overall management of golf facilities. "GCSAA is pleased to join Jim Colbert, the PGA Tour and Kansas State University in this endeavor that will benefit all who enjoy the game of golf," said GCSAA Chief Executive Officer Stephen F. Mona. The positive impact of this project will be far reaching - a golf management program to train tomorrow's leaders, a research facility to aid the golf industry and a first-class facility for golf enthusiasts to enjoy a game that is growing faster than any sport in America."
season preview
“Take care of our business everyday.” The departure of two seniors from last year’s squad meant that the youth in KState’s lineup would have to step up and play quality golf. The beginning of the fall season showed just that. Three underclassmen placed in the top20 in the Chip-N-Club Invitational aiding in a second place overall team finish to begin the fall season. The very next event at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, the youth on K-State’s lineup proved worthy of the challenge and had two underclassman place in the top-15 to finish the Wildcats third overall out of 12 teams. With the youth answering the call and two top-3 finishes, Kristi Knight’s squad was off to the best start to a fall season since 2001. The Wildcats then traveled to Columbia, Mo., to compete in the Johnie Imes Invitational where they faced their toughest competition of the year. Nine of the 15 teams K-State would go up against were ranked inside of the top-75 and two in the top-20. After two rounds the Wildcats were in fifth-place but fell two spots in the final round of 18 to finish seventh. K-State was unable to get four solid scores in each the final two events of the season and finished 10th at the Dale McNamara Invitational and 14th at the Alamo Invitational.

“I know the ladies were disap-
pointed with how they finished the fall because they made good strides,” said Coach Knight. “It is important to keep perspective, that the good outweighed the bad. If anything it is a great reminder to take car of business each day. It takes four good scores. Everyone has to focus on the process.”
came in 2009 at the Marilynn/Smith Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills where she tied for 14th. “Elise is a fighter. She was held back by nagging injuries most of the fall. She leads by example with how hard she works in the training room and at the
K-State had four different ladies play in all five events during the fall season and was led by freshman Gianna Misenhelter with a team-best 76.14 stroke average. Misenhelter recorded four top20 finishes in her first season of collegiate golf. She is not alone in the youth success as three of the of the five lowest stroke averages come from underclassman. The fall season came to a close with three team top-10 finishes, four top-10 individual finishes, and 10 top-20 individual finishes to build off into spring action. “I believe the team is very motivated for what could come in the spring,” said Knight. “From what I have seen during the off-season, they are focused on getting better.”
golf course,” said Knight.
Seniors Elise Houtz Elise played in one event over the fall season at the Alamo Invitational. She finished 71st overall and recorded a 31over par 247 through three rounds. Houtz has competed in 20 events during her time as a Wildcat, recording three top-20 finishes. Her best finish
Emily Houtz Emily competed in four events during the fall and finished with a stroke average of 80.81. Her best performance of the fall came at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational where she tied for 23rd and shot a season low 17over par 233. Houtz followed that up with an 18-over par 234 performance

season preview at the Johnie Imes Invitational where she finished 54th. “Emily is a great example of dedication and determination,” said Knight. “She has improved each year. She had her career best competitive round this summer and she delivered two great rounds at Missouri.” Juniors Paige Osterloo Osterloo began the season with the best individual finish of her career with a second-place finish at the Chip-NClub Invitational. The event was limited to just two rounds due to weather, giving Osterloo a 36-hole score of 1-under par 145. It marked the best finish of her career and the third top-20 performance as a Wildcat. Osterloo participated in the remaining four events of the fall averaging 78.00 strokes per round. “Paige has a great on course attitude. She is developing into a player that can get the most out of each round,” Knight Said. “She brings so much positive energy.”
has not seen the tournament results yet. When she puts a round together I think many more will follow.” Knight said. Laura Hildebrandt Laura did not compete this fall. “Laura is 100 percent healthy and that is good news,” Knight said. “She is a talented player and has the ability to make us a stronger team with more depth.” Hanna Roos Coming off of her highly-touted freshman season, Roos has competed in four events this season for the Wildcats. She finished in a tie for 20th at the Chip-NClub Invitational, carding a 9-over par 153 in her two rounds. In the next three events, Roos competed as an individual. The Sweden native has participated in 13 events with five top-20 finishes. “The fall was frustrating for Hanna. It lacked consistency,” Knight said. “She has great spirit, determination and talent. She is looking forward to the spring and more low scores.”
Ami Storey Like Osterloo, Storey started off the 2010 season with a bang, finishing in a tie for eighth at the Chip-N-Club Invitational. In the two round event, Storey carded a 5-over par 149. Storey grabbed another top-20 performance at the Sunflower Invitational where she tied for 18th with a score of 16-over par 232. She lost a little momentum in Columbia, finishing in a tie for 45th but got back on track at the Dale McNamara Invitational by tying for 25th. Storey competed in every event during the fall season. “Ami had four solid events this fall. She is much improved around the green and that has led to better scoring. She knows she needs to stay committed to her short game to keep lowering her stroke average,” Knight said. Sophomores Kristen Dorsey Dorsey competed in one event during the fall. She finished 61st at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, scoring a 39-over par 239. Dorsey has competed in four events thus far in her career. “Kristen has practiced diligently. She
Whitney Pyle
Whitney Pyle Pyle has become a big part in the underclassman’s success as she carded two top-10 finishes in the fall. Pyle notched a 5-over par 149 at the ChipN-Club Invitational to finish in a tie for eighth. She then backed that up with a tie for sixth at Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. Pyle made the lineup in every event during the fall,
giving her eight events of participation as a Wildcat. “Whitney came in much improved from a year ago. Her best golf is in front of her. She is emerging into a leader and she is not afraid of anything,” said Knight. “She wants to improve and help this team.” Freshman Gianna Misenhelter Arguably the best freshman to swing the clubs for Coach Knight, Misenhelter has provided the most consistent golf during the fall. Misenhelter finished in the top-20 her first four events as a Wildcat. She tied for 16th at the ChipN-Club Invitational and then tied for 12th in the Sunflower Invitational and the Johnie Imes Invitational. Gathered her fourth and final top-20 performance at the Dale McNamara Invitational where she tied for 19th. “It is very nice to have a freshman like Gianna in the lineup every week. She has come in here and has competed at a high level,” Knight said. “She has a great work ethic and is a fiesty competitor.” Spring Schedule The Wildcats will start the spring season with a trip to Weston, Fla., to play in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge on Feb. 27. K-State will then return to the Fresno St. Lexus Classic, a tournament they have not participated in since the spring of 2007 where they finished fifth. Coach Knight will take her team to two events the Wildcats have never competed in, the BYU Entrada Classic and the Indiana Invitational. The BYU Entrada Classic will proceed the Mountain View Collegiate, both of which feature courses in a mountain layout. The Big 12 Championships will take place in Columbia, Mo., at the Club at Old Hawthorne, the same course where KState finished seventh at for the Johnie Imes Invitational in the fall. “We have good events with tough opponents in the spring,” said Knight. “We have an opportunity in front of us to reach our goals.”

Kristi Knight 16th Year Kristi Knight enters her 16th year as head women’s golf coach at Kansas State after guiding the Wildcats to a fourth place finish at the Big 12 Championship two seasons ago. The accomplishment was the best post-season finish in school history. Knight Has already tutorted the Wildcats to two top three finishes this season. Knight came to K-State as the school’s first fulltime women’s golf coach in the fall of 1995 after playing at the University of Oklahoma. “I was encouraged to become a coach by my coach at Oklahoma,” Knight said. “I am forever grateful to Coach Ludvigson for that.” A native of Crockett, Texas, Knight graduated from Norman (Okla.) High School. Knight played collegiate golf at Oklahoma from 1985-88. Knight was a consistent player for the Sooners, lettering three years under head coach Carol Ludvigson. As a senior, Knight was named team co-captain and selected as a Scholastic All-American. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Knight began working at the prestigious Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla., and then went on to earn her master’s degree in sports administration from Oklahoma in 1993. “I am a competitive person and I love the challenges and rewards that coaching provides,” Knight said. “It has taken me places I never would’ve gone. The relationships you build and the friendships you make with everyone are great.” Knight has guided the Wildcats to six collegiate wins. The first was at the Northern Iowa Classic, Sept. 23, 1996. The Wildcats also claimed the team titles at the Mountain View Collegiate, March 24, 2002, the Sunflower Invitational, Oct. 15, 2002, and when hosting the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, Oct. 13-14, 2003. K-State also took the trophy at the Texas A&M Mo'Morial March 1-2, 2004. “Being able to coach at a university like K-State is an honor,” Knight said. “It is a great academic in-

stitution in a community of tremendous people.” Since her arrival in 1995, the Wildcats have placed in the top five at 47 tournaments and in the top three 28 times. Under Knight, Trisha Hoover became K-State’s first all-conference women’s golfer in 1996. Christine Boucher finished second in the Big 12 Conference Championship in 2002, the highest ever for a Wildcat in a conference championship and grabbed Second Team All-Big 12 honors. She was named to the first team in 2003, and in 2004 Boucher was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. “My goal is for my players to improve their game and develop as a person during their time at KState,” Knight said. “I want each young lady to leave K-State with the ability and opportunity to achieve their goals.” “This is an important time in their lives. When they arrive, many of them are unsure what they want to do or what they think they can do. I want to make sure they know they can accomplish anything they put their heart and mind to.” Under Knight, the Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships four straight years, from 2001-04. Knight also guided Boucher to the NCAA Championships in 2003, the first Wildcat to qualify. K-State’s team and individual scoring records have come under the watch of Knight. The top 18hole and 54-hole team scores were set by the 2002-2003 team in the Edwin Watts Intercollegiate at Oak Point G.C. in Kiawah, S.C. That team shot a 286 on day two to the set the 18-hole record and totaled three rounds of 874, the 54-hole record, for the two days. At the same tournament, Boucher claimed the top individual scores for a Wildcat in school history. She posted a 64 on day two of the tournament for the best 18-hole score. She shot a three-round total of 204 to take home first-place honors and set the Wildcat individual 54-hole best. Knight will look to guide a competitive K-State squad into the 2010-11 season. Knight was asked to serve on the NCAA Central Regional Selection Committee from 2004-2006 and served on NGCA All-American/Awards Committee 2006-2009.

uniKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY In 2009, K-State welcomed a new president and a new athletic director, who will build on the successes of the past and create a bright new future. Kirk Schulz accepted the K-State presidency because he is impressed with all of the outstanding programs and successes of our faculty, staff and students and with the passion KStaters have for their university. K-Staters connect with our new president via his blog, Twitter and Facebook. Check out his Web site at www.K-State.edu/president. HISTORY AND LOCATION Founded on Feb. 16, 1863, Kansas State University is the oldest public institution of higher education in Kansas and one of the nation's first land-grant universities. Throughout its history, K-State's mission has been rooted in the principles set forth in the Morrill Act - to provide teaching, research and service to the citizens of Kansas, the nation and the world. The university's 644-acre wooded main campus with historical limestone buildings is located in Manhattan. K-State also has a campus in Salina, and another coming soon in Olathe, along with numerous extension fields, offices and other facilities in Kansas and Nebraska. The Salina campus offers bachelor's and associate degrees in aviation and engineering technologies. Air service in and out of Manhattan Regional Airport connects the city with major airports all over the Midwest and South. Located five miles north of campus is Tuttle Creek Reservoir, a favorite outlet of students for boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE K-State is the only research university in the United States to have three national CASE/Carnegie professors of the year. All three are active teachers: Michael Wesch, 2008 national winner; Chris Sorensen, 2007 national winner; and Dean Zollman, 1996 national winner. Look for "kstate" on YouTube to see lectures by them and other great faculty. More than 250 majors and programs are offered in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business Administration, Agriculture, Education, Architecture, Planning and Design, Human Ecology, Technology and Aviation and Veterinary Medicine. The Graduate School offers 67 master's degrees, 39 doctoral degrees, five educational doctorate programs and 33 graduate certificates in multiple disciplines across campus. More than $185 million is available in student financial assistance, including $11 million in scholarships. Seven out of 10 students receive financial assistance. Even with 23,000 students, K-State is
committed to individualized education whenever possible. For example, freshman English classes have no more than 22 students, introductory chemistry labs average 15 students, introductory art classes average 19 students and speech classes are limited to 23 students. Seventy percent of classes have 30 students or less and the average class size for all undergraduate classes is 23 students. Ninety percent of classes have less than 49 students. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Academic achievement of the institution is drawing national acclaim as well. K-State students have won more Truman scholarships, more Goldwater scholarships and more Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships than any other public university in the nation. Over the past twenty-five years, Kansas State University has ranked No. 1 in the nation among public universities in Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, Goldwater and Udall Scholars. We’ve earned our reputation as the “Student Scholar Capital of America.” K-State students have an outstanding record of acceptance into professional schools. Over the past four years, 70-percent of our qualified pre-med applicants were accepted into medical schools; 100percent of our pre-optometry and 82-percent of our pre-dentistry students were accepted into their respective professional schools. Over the past five years, 98-percent of students who participated in our pre-law program were accepted into law schools. ‘

Director of Athletics John Currie There is no question John Currie has hit the ground running in his first 18 months as Kansas State's Director of Athletics. Even as he was being introduced as K-State's 15th Athletics Director on May 18, 2009, Currie was already implementing a new communications plan to restore the trust of all Wildcat fans and consistently emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability as the foundation for K-State achieving its vision of a model intercollegiate athletics program. Over his first 12 months that plan included over 200 speaking appearances throughout the state and with KState groups across the nation. Regular online letters and chats, K-State's first-ever Fan Forum conference call, which saw more than 3,000 fans participate, and more than 100 media interviews and talk show appearances further helped Currie connect with the Wildcat faithful. Currie arrived in Manhattan on June 8, 2009, to officially begin his duties. Just a month later Currie and his staff launched the "K-State Pledge," a series of financial accountability measures and core values serving as the base of K-State's vision of having a model intercollegiate athletics program. Among those values are five goals: a world-class student-athlete experience; value to the University, city and state; integrity and transparency in matters of ethics, finance and NCAA compliance; championship-level athletic performances; and the best fan experience in the Big 12. In an effort to create the best fan experience possible, Currie's staff created new ticket initiatives for football that led to the largest homeopening crowd in Bill Snyder Family Stadium history on September 5, 2009 (50,750). The Wildcats also set new season total and average attendance records in baseball in 2010, sold a record number of season tickets for volleyball and had the largest average attendance increase in the nation this past season in men's basketball. The 2010 football season then saw four sellout crowds fill Bill Snyder Family Stadium, the most since 1999, and K-State fans would help the Wildcats set a new total attendance record for a six-game home schedule. Providing K-State student-athletes a worldclass experience is also a priority as Currie's staff initiated new events such as the Powercat Choice Awards to showcase KPowercat Choice Awards State's student-athletes and a special graduation reception and ring ceremony to honor their dedication and hard work on the field and in the classroom. Kansas State's student-athletes currently lead the Big 12 in all-sports graduation rate, including the highest football, men's golf, women's golf, men's track and field and baseball rates in the conference. In fact, K-State has claimed the No. 1 graduation rate among all student-athletes in each of the last four seasons. To help encourage support for the student-athlete experience and championship pursuits, K-State's fundraising efforts were completely overhauled with a new emphasis on personal interaction and communication for Ahearn Fund donors of all levels. K-State supporters responded by increasing total annual fund cash gifts in Currie's first year by over 50% versus the previous year to an all-time high of $14.47 mil-

lion. Revenue growth, along with new measures promoting efficiency and cost containment, also enabled Currie and his staff to restore fiscal integrity to the department and achieve a balanced budget. Currie worked to establish relationships and communication across campus through steps such as personally visiting with K-State deans in their respective offices. He serves as a member of President Kirk Schulz's cabinet and has made presentations and held question and answer sessions with many campus organizations. Student leaders have already recognized Currie's commitment to campus by inducting him into the Order of Omega honor society. Understanding the importance of coaching continuity in building successful programs, after arriving in Manhattan Currie immediately signed 2009 Big 12 Baseball Coach of the Year Brad Hill to a contract extension, completed a five-year contract for legendary returning football coach Bill Snyder and inked head women's basketball coach Deb Patterson and track and field coach Cliff Rovelto to contract extensions. On March 6, 2010, Currie honored the dramatic academic and athletic progress of the men's basketball program by announcing a new five-year contract for 2010 Big 12 Men's Basketball Coach of the Year Frank Martin. Currently a member of the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet, Currie also serves the Big 12 as a member of the Game Management/Officiating Sub-committee. President Schulz and Currie's involvement to help secure the future of the Big 12 Conference and Kansas State's position as a long-term league member was pivotal not only for Wildcat student-athletes and their college experience but also for the history of the University. Currie began his duties at K-State after 10 years at the University of Tennessee, most recently serving as Executive Associate Athletics Director under Athletic Director Mike Hamilton. Currie was responsible for the direct management of units that annually produced $84 million in revenue and gifts, including the department's fundraising, marketing, ticketing, media relations, public relations, internet and broadcasting offices. Currie also provided oversight for the men's basketball program and helped direct numerous coaching and senior administrative searches. He served as President of the SEC development officers group for 2004-05, chaired the 2007 CASE national athletic development conference and was a member of the SEC ticket policy committee. The Knoxville News Sentinel recognized Currie in December 2008 by naming him to its prestigious "Top 40 Leaders Under 40" list. He began his career at Wake Forest in 1993 as a Deacon Club intern before being named Assistant Director in 1994, a position he held until 1997. Currie earned his master's in sports management from Tennessee in 2003 and is a 1993 Wake Forest graduate. He and his wife Mary Lawrence have three children, Jack, Virginia and Mary-Dell.

What Every Alumnus and Booster of Kansas State University Should Know About the NCAA As a supporter of K-State, you have a lot of pride in your school. You are proud of KSU’s high academic standards, our adherence to values and the overall quality of the K-State experience. Kansas State has a long tradition of integrity but to help assure compliance with NCAA and conference rules, please take a few minutes to read this information. The eligibility of Kansas State’s studentathletes and reputation of the department and university depend greatly upon your cooperation. Key Point A “representative” of Kansas State’s athletic interests is: an individual who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of K-State’s executive or athletics administration to: A) have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting KSU athletics. B) have made financial contributions to the athletic dept. or to an athletic booster organization of KState. C) have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletic program. D) bought or received tickets to a K-State athletics event. Key Rule: NCAA BYLAW 13.01.5 In Division I, representatives of athletics interest are prohibited from making in-person, on-or-off campus recruiting contacts, written, telephonic communications or e-mail transactions with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians. Interpretations 1. A representative of a Division I institution is prohibited from making in-person recruiting contact with a prospect and his or her parents/guardian on or off campus. Limited Exception: You may have contact with a prospect regarding permissible pre-enrollment activities such as summer employment, provided the prospect has already signed a National Letter of Intent and K-State is aware that you are making these contacts in regard to employment. 2. A Division I representative is prohibited from writing or telephoning a prospect and his or her parents or legal guardians. Limited Exception: You may have a phone conversation with a prospect only if the prospect initiates the call. Such a call may not be prearranged by a K-State staff member and you are not permitted to have a recruiting conversation, but may exhibit normal civility. You must refer any questions about the University’s athletic program to the athletic department.
44
3. A representative is prohibited from contacting a prospect’s coach, principal, or counselor in
an attempt to evaluate the prospect. Limited Exception: NCAA rules do not preclude you from viewing a prospect’s contest on your own initiative, but you may not contact the prospect, pick up game films or transcripts. What can I do? If you know of a high school or junior college studentathlete who might want to attend Kansas State, the only permissible activity for a representative is to call the appropriate K-State coach What is an “Extra Benefit?” An extra benefit would include provision of any transportation, meals, clothes, entertainment, preferential loan terms, wages not commensurate with duties, or other benefits offered to a prospect or current student-athlete which is unavailable to the general student population. What can you do with prospects? DO feel free to attend high school and junior college athletic events. You simply cannot have any contact with the prospective student-athletes or relatives. Should you find yourself seated next to parents of a prospect, DO NOT initiate conversation with the relatives. If conversation is initiated with you, respond in a civil manner, but DO NOT discuss KState’s athletic program with them. If they raise questions about athletics, remind them that the NCAA prohibits you from discussing athletics with them. Direct their questions to the athletic department. You MAY discuss the University in general, and its academic programs. DO continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contacts with sons and daughters of those families are permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes and are not prompted by Wildcat coaching staff members. You ARE permitted to play “pick up” games, continue neighborhood picnics or backyard barbecues and engage in your normal activities with prospects and their parents who are family friends. DO feel free to attend a public event (i.e. awards dinner) at which prospects are in attendance. NO attempt should be made to contact or recruit the prospect at these events. What can I do for current K-State athletes? DO feel free to invite a student-athlete to your home for an occasional meal, but you must first contact the coach in the sport in which the student-athlete is a participant. Remember, the student-athlete must provide his or her own transportation. You may do this a max of once per school term per athlete. DO feel free to invite a team for dinner or to meet with a group of alumni in a city where they are competing. The NCAA permits student-athletes AS A TEAM to receive special benefits not permitted as individuals. Arrangements for such events must be
made in advance with the head coach or appropriate athletic staff member. Other questions and answers: Q. May I accompany the coach during a “home” visit with the prospect? A. No Q. May a booster group finance a season-ending banquet? May it purchase any awards for the team? A. Yes, provided all funds are expended through the athletic department. Since the NCAA has established a value limit on awards received by student-athletes, it is important to have all awards approved by the athletic department. Additional Reminders 1. Please contact the athletic department for NCAA rules interpretations. 2. Remember that in most cases: CONTACT is prohibited. 3. If you think it is wrong then it probably is wrong. 4. No question is too dumb to ask. 5. Questions: Call 785-532-6910
