KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Kansas State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide, within the context of available resources, an environment that supports the educational objectives, academic progress and general welfare of student-athletes and allows them to compete at the highest levels of athletics. Our mission is also to embrace the guidelines and principles established by the Big 12 Conference and NCAA, which promote the principles of sportsmanship and ethical conduct. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to providing fair and equitable treatment for all student-athletes and athletic department personnel, including women and minorities.
PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics shall assure that all intercollegiate sports programs and department operations are consistent with the mission of Kansas State University. Student-athletes and department employees should be treated fairly and equitably regardless of gender or race. All department activities will be conducted within the rules, regulations and policies of Kansas State University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA. The Department’s decision-making process shall be based upon consideration of the academic, emotional and physical welfare of every current and future student-athlete. MEDIA INFORMATION
Thank you for your interest in Kansas State women’s soccer. The K-State Athletics Communications Office has produced the 2016 media almanac to assist in your coverage of the Wildcats. Please feel free to contact any member of our staff with questions, requests or concerns. We look forward to working with you throughout the 2016 season.
MEDIA INTERVIEWS
All interviews with Kansas State players and coaches must be requested and arranged through the K-State Athletics Communications Office. Please be advised that all interview requests must be submitted 24 hours in advance. Players and coaches’ home or mobile phone numbers will NOT be given out. Practices are closed to the public and the media. Players and coaches will be made available for interviews immediately following practice on specified days at the K-State Soccer Complex. All interview requests for those post-practice interview sessions must be made in advance with the K-State Athletics Communications Office. Please be advised that regularly scheduled interview days may not be conducted due to team travel. Game day interviews are not permitted unless request is affiliated with the television network broadcasting that day’s game. See ‘Postgame Policy’ for additional information.
WORKING CREDENTIALS
The Kansas State Athletics Communications Office should receive all credential requests no later than five days prior to the specified game. Requests can be made on official letterhead and addressed to: Women’s Soccer SID Kansas State Department of Athletics West Stadium Center, 1800 College Avenue Manhattan, KS 66502-3355 Requests may also be faxed to the Athletics Communications Office at 785-532-6093 or sent via e-mail to Randy Peterson (rpeterson@kstatesports.com). Because of mail service, media passes will not be mailed in most instances. If this is the case,
passes may be picked up one hour before kick-off at the ticket booth at the entrance to Tointon Family Stadium. Individuals picking up credentials will be required to furnish positive identification. All credentials are non-transferable and are issued based on Kansas State’s credential policy. Admission to press level is for working media only. Only media members with official K-State credentials will be admitted. Note: Friends, spouses and children are not welcome in the press area.

Additionally, online services are prohibited from “real time” (also known as “cybercast”) transmission of all Kansas State Athletics events. POSTGAME POLICY
Press parking is located in the west lot of Bill Snyder Family Stadium/Bramlage Coliseum and can be accessed off of College Avenue through Gate 1.
Kansas State’s locker room is closed. Media will be asked to submit a list of player requests to Assistant Director of Athletics Communications Randy Peterson during the last 10 minutes of the match. Coach Dibbini and requested players will be available on the field following a brief team meeting.

Only those stations recognized as the official originator for the visiting team will be afforded broadcast facilities.
PHOTOGRAPHERS
Only accredited photographers on assignment from recognized media outlets will be issued sideline credentials. In accordance with NCAA rules, no freelance photographers will be admitted on the sidelines. All photographers must have a media pass to shoot on the sidelines of the K-State Soccer Complex. Flash photography is prohibited.
K-State soccer can be found within the Manhattan area on 101.5 KROCK and on the web at kstatesports.com. In the inaugural season, K-State’s soccer play-by-play voice will be Mitch Fortner.

When referring to Kansas State University, please only use the terms Kansas State or K-State. Please refrain from using KSU, Kansas St., Kan. St., or any other variation. The only acceptable nicknames include Wildcats or Cats. In addition, K-State plays in the Big 12 Conference or Big 12. Please do not use roman numerals (Big XII) when referring to the Conference. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Kansas State reserves the right to deny media credentials to any individual whose website is not affiliated with an official news-gathering organization or publication. Credentials will be issued to official online services of national, over-the-air or cable networks or established publications which are staffed by fulltime employees (i.e. ESPN.com, SI.com, CBS Sports, etc.) and then with a maximum of one credential. Credentials will not be granted to any online agency operating sites that are in any way affiliated with gambling, or to “freelance”

Mike Dibbini Mike Dibbini enters his first official season at the helm of K-State women’s soccer in the 2016 season after being hired in December of 2014 as Kansas State’s first intercollegiate women’s soccer coach. Since K-State announced its intention to begin an intercollegiate women’s soccer program in October of 2014, Dibbini has led K-State through the year and a half process of forming a program from the ground up. Prior to becoming the inaugural head coach at K-State, Dibbini built winning programs and successful studentathletes at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels. He is a 12-time conference coach of the year who led Kansas Wesleyan and Cal Poly Pomona to 13 postseason tournament appearances and an overall career winning percentage of .750 as a collegiate head coach (265-78-25). Dibbini coached eight years at KWU leading both the men’s and women’s programs before moving to Pomona in 2013. In just his second year at Cal Poly Pomona in 2014, Dibbini directed the Broncos to their best season in 15 years with a 15-6-1 record and a No. 16 national ranking, the second-highest in program history. Cal Poly Pomona advanced to the Division II West Region title game in the third round of the NCAA Tournament and produced six allconference performers including the school’s fourth-ever All-American. Charged with the task of rebuilding the Bronco program when hired in 2013, Dibbini’s first team posted a 6-7-5 record. Cal Poly Pomona made tremendous strides in year two not only on the playing field but in the classroom as well. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recognized the efforts of the Broncos with a pair of Team Academic Awards for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. At Kansas Wesleyan, Dibbini served as the Director of Soccer Programs from 2005-12 for both the men’s and women’s teams. Combined, he amassed a record of 244-

65-25 (.768) and in conference play, his teams went 1337-4 (.938) while capturing 12 regular-season titles and 12 tournament titles. The Kansas Wesleyan women’s team posted a record of 126-30-14 under Dibbini and, in 2012, the Coyotes were 20-2 overall en route to capturing the league’s regularseason and tournament titles and Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year recognition for Dibbini. Dibbini also helped KWU secure a berth in the 2012 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship Opening Round, where Kansas Wesleyan defeated Benedictine to advance to the NAIA National Championship Final site in Orange Beach, Ala. It marked the second time in the Opening Round era that the Coyotes had reached the Final Site, the first in 2008. The KWU women’s squad won three-straight regular season championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008 while going undefeated during that span, and won four-consecutive conference tournament championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 before adding another in 2010. The Kansas Wesleyan men’s soccer team finished the 2012 season with a 16-3-2 record overall, winning both the KCAC regular season and tournament championships for a third-straight season and advancing to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Opening Round for a third-consecutive year. Dibbini earned his sixth KCAC Coach of the Year accolade in 2012 and through his eight seasons, the men’s team went 118-36-11 overall. Prior to coaching at KWU, Dibbini was the Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Coach at Salina Central High School in Salina, Kansas, from 1999 through 2006 and also helped develop the Salina Soccer Academy youth program. In 2006, he was named the AVCTL Division I Coach of the Year. In 1999, he received the Kansas State Youth Soccer Boys Coach of the Year award. He holds an NSCAA Premier

Dibbini graduated Cum Laude from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1999 with a degree in Elementary Education, and continued on to earn a Master of Business Administration in 2002. As a student-athlete with two years at KWU and two at Bethany Lutheran (Minn.), Dibbini became a four-time All-Conference, All-Region and All-American selection. In 1997, Dibbini was ranked No. 2 in the NAIA for goals and points while also earning NAIA Academic All-Region and National Small College Player of the Year honors. Originally from Palmdale, Calif., Dibbini was a two-time All-CIF First Team and Golden League Player of the Year honoree while at Palmdale High School. His high school career featured a CIF Player of the Year selection as well. Dibbini and his wife Trina, also a Kansas Wesleyan graduate and Baldwin City, Kansas, native, have two children, Jada and Kadin.

Jessica Smith Jessica Smith joined K-State head coach Mike Dibbini’s inaugural coaching staff in January of 2016, following four seasons at Kansas. In addition to Smith’s coaching duties, her responsibilities include: practice preparation and development for the team’s offense, arranging the team travel, academic mentoring, university and community engagement and recruiting evaluation. Smith served as an assistant coach on the Kansas staff from 2011 until 2015. During her time on the sidelines with the Jayhawks, she helped guide the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2014 and a trip to the Big 12 Conference tournament final in 2015. Under Smith’s guidance, the Jayhawks’ offense tallied 35 or more goals in four seasons as the 2011 team registered one of the top offensive seasons in program history. KU scored the second-most goals in school history (46) and totaled 131 points, which was the third-highest single-season mark in program history. In 2013, Smith was selected as one of 15 women by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their inaugural 30-Under-30 Coaching Program for rising coaches. Smith holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “B” License, which she attained in 2011. From 2009-10, Smith aided the Jayhawks as a volunteer assistant coach. Before she joined the KU coaching staff, Smith coached at various levels in the Kansas City Metro area, including as a varsity assistant coach for both the boys’ and girls’ teams at Olathe Northwest High School. During her time at ONWHS, she helped guide the Lady Ravens to back-toback region championships in 2008 and 2009, while assisting with the Ravens’ boys regional championship team in 2007. Several of her players on both the girls’ and boys’ sides went on to play soccer at the collegiate level.

In addition to her coaching duties at Olathe Northwest, Smith served as a coach with the Kansas State Olympic Development Program (ODP) girls’ program. In 2008, she was an assistant with the 1992 team, which was the first Kansas ODP team (boys or girls) to win an ODP Regional Championship. Her team went on to participate in the US Youth Soccer National ODP Championship tournament. Smith is currently working on Region II ODP staff with the 2000 birth year team. Smith has also spent time working with TOPSoccer programs throughout the state of Kansas in 2008 until 2011 as a chairperson as well as a coach. TOPSoccer is U.S. Youth Soccer’s outreach program for children with special needs. As a student-athlete from 2002-05 with Kansas, Smith played in 83 career games and was team captain in 2005. She was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and helped the Jayhawks win the Big 12 regular season title in 2004 and aided the 2003 squad to a third round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Smith scored 16 goals in her career with the Jayhawks including seven in her freshman season. Her 16 career goals rank eighth in school history. She also dished out 10 assists. She garnered a pair of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors and was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week in 2005. She graduated from KU in 2006 with a degree in sports and fitness management. Smith was an NSCAA All-American at Wichita Southeast High School. The product of Wichita, Kansas,is the program’s all-time leading scorer after graduating in 2002. In 2012, Smith was an inaugural inductee into the Wichita Southeast High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Gabe Romo Gabe Romo enters his first season on the sidelines for K-State as an assistant coach. Romo was hired by head coach Mike Dibbini as the program’s first assistant coach in March of 2015. In addition to his coaching duties, Romo’s responsibilities include: practice preparation and development for the team’s defense, organization and arrangement of the team’s game schedule, dispersing team information on the team’s social media accounts, recruiting coordination of unofficial and official visits and recruiting evaluation. Romo joins K-State following a one-year stint in 2014 as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Holy Names University in Oakland, California. Romo guided the men’s program to a 6-12 record and tutored the 2014 Pacific West Conference (PWC) Player of the Year and AllPWC First Team honoree, Jaime Phillips. Prior to his time at Holy Names, Romo was at Kansas Wesleyan from 2011-14 as a member of Dibbini’s staff and as the head men’s soccer coach. As the men’s head coach in 2013, Romo registered a 13-4-3 record while earning Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Coach of the Year honors. Romo guided the Coyotes to a 2014 NAIA National Tournament appearance while capturing the KCAC regular season and tournament titles. In 2012, Romo served as the associate head men’s and women’s soccer coach under Dibbini at Kansas Wesleyan. Romo was responsible for assisting with all aspects of both programs which included recruiting and retention of student-athletes and aiding in the design and implementation of training sessions. Both programs had significant success in 2012, as the men finished with a 16-3-2 record and secured the KCAC regular season and tournament titles, while making an appearance in the NAIA national tournament and a final NAIA ranking of No. 10. Tyler Watkins enters his first season as a K-State volunteer coach/goalkeepers coach. Watkins’s responsibilities include: goalkeeper specific training, video analysis and scouting and assisting at K-State’s various camps and clinics. Prior to arriving at Kansas State, Watkins was the head women’s soccer coach at NAIAaffiliated Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, from 2012 until 2015. Before taking the reins of the women’s program, Watkins served as an assistant coach fro two seasons in 2010 and 2011 with both the men’s and women’s teams. Watkins started his coaching career as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Upper Iowa University in 2008. He then joined the Cornell College coaching staff as assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach in 2009. While at Cornell, Watkins was also the head men’s coach at Center Point-Urbana High School and was head goalkeeper coach for Cedar River Soccer Association/Eastern Iowa United. Watkins spent time as an assistant women’s coach at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School in 2009 and at Independence High School in 2008. He served as a head coach with Wisconsin ODP and the Dubuque Soccer Club. Watkins played goalkeeper at Upper Iowa, starting the majority of the team’s games his freshman and sophomore years. He also played with the St. Louis Lions Soccer Club PDL and Super 20 teams. His college career ended in his junior year due to a knee injury. Watkins has a NSCAA national diploma, a NSCAA advanced national goalkeeping diploma and a USSF “D” License. Since John Currie’s introduction as director of athletics in May 2009, K-State has experienced a tremendous turnaround, unprecedented athletic and academic accomplishments and perhaps the most successful seven-year period in department history. Driving toward the vision of a Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program, Currie’s rebuilt senior leadership team turned an inherited deficit into national acclaim as one of the NCAA’s most financially solvent programs and by August 2016 will have completed $210 million in comprehensive facility improvements benefitting all 16 Wildcat teams, including the Vanier Family Football Complex, West Stadium Center, Basketball Training Facility, Intercollegiate Rowing Facility, Mike Goss Tennis Stadium and soccer competition/football practice fields, all privately funded with zero state tax or university tuition dollars. Currie leads one of the most productive and efficient programs in the country, and his seven-year tenure has included team Big 12 Championships in football (2012), men’s basketball (2013) and baseball (2013), 16 team NCAA tournament appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball, and 50 individual Big 12 and nine individual NCAA Championships. K-State student-athletes have shined academically as well, with three sports, including football, currently leading the Big 12 in APR rating and an all-sports graduation rate exceeding that of the general student body. Record attendance across all sports, including a current streak of 27 consecutive football sellouts, and careful stewardship help provide a tremendous home-field advantage for 450 Wildcat student-athletes, while adding value to the university, community and state as the only university in Kansas and one of just two dozen nationally to operate in the black without any state tax or university tuition dollars or subsidies. Athletically Currie’s tenure has been marked by across the board success including a 2015-16 year that saw K-State football participate in its sixthstraight bowl game and volleyball advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. Highlighted by three NCAA Champions in track and field, the women’s team went on to finish tied for seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and eighth at the national indoor meet while also finishing third both indoor and outdoor at this year’s Big 12 Championships. Also, a total of eight track and field student-athletes claimed a total of 12 individual Big 12 Championships in 2015-16, while Jeff Mittie’s second year at the helm of the women’s basketball program saw the Wildcats return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. The 2012-13 campaign was also one for the ages as K-State became just the fourth BCS school since 1998 to win league titles in football, men’s basketball and baseball the same year, while K-State has held a 52-39 record since 2009 in head-to-head competition against in-state rival KU. With the tag line of “Welcome to K-State” symbolizing the goal of providing The Best Fan Experience
in the Big 12, K-State’s marketing and fundraising efforts have been completely overhauled in Currie’s tenure. K-State supporters have pushed attendance to new heights, while more than $200 million in total gifts have been raised for K-State Athletics in Currie’s seven years. Meanwhile, history was made as Currie and his staff worked hand in hand with then-President Kirk Schulz and the KSU Foundation to secure the largest individual donation in university history, a $60 million gift benefitting various academic and athletic initiatives, while the department reached its $50 million private gifts goal for the new Vanier Football Complex in just 13 months. Currie’s award-winning Fan Experience staff, which was named the national 2014 NACMA Marketing Team of the Year, has created new ticket initiatives that have led to 36 sellout crowds since 2009 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium - named in 2016 as one of five national finalists for the prestigious SportsBusiness Journal Sports Facility of the Year award including a current streak of 27 straight. What can I do for current student-athletes or prospects?
You may provide an occasional meal for student-athletes in your home. Please contact the athletics compliance office for more information. You may invite a team to dinner or to meet a group of alumni in a city where they are competing. The NCAA allows student-athletes as a team to receive special benefits not alowed as individuals. Arrangements for such events should be made in advance with the head coach. You may provide employment for a student-athlete. Wages must be commensurate with the going rate for similar services and only for work actually performed. You may attend high school, community college and public events in which prospects are participating however no attempt should be made to contact or recruit prospects at these events. You may continue established family relationships with prospects or student-athletes, their parents and relatives. Contact is permitted as long as it is not made for recruiting purposes.
What is not permitted under NCAA rules?
Provide gifts, free or reduced cost services including meals, drinks, clothing laundry, haircuts, legal fee or other benefits to prospects, student-athletes, their relatives or friends. Provide tickets to any event for a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends. Contact prospective student-athletes for recruiting purposes. This includes emails, phone calls, letters, face-to-face contact and personal websites (i.e. Facebook.com, MySpace.com, etc.) Provide cash, entertainment, use of your home or other items of value. RETIRED FOUR-STAR GENERAL, U.S.A.F. 15TH CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF Gen. Richard B. Myers was appointed interim president of Kansas State University on
April 14, 2016, by the Kansas Board of Regents. A retired U.S. Air Force general, Myers graduated from K-State in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and joined the Air Force through the university’s Air Force ROTC program. The native Kansan from Merriam has served his country well and retired as a four-star general. From 2001-2005, he was the 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As chairman, Myers was the highest-ranking uniformed officer of U.S. military forces and served as the principal military adviser to President George W. Bush, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the National Security Council. As a command pilot, he has logged more than 4,100 flying hours, including 600 combat hours. His largest commands included U.S. Forces Japan and 5th Air Force at Yokota Air Base, Japan; Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; and the North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Space Command and Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. He has received numerous awards and decorations for his service, which include Legion of Merit, French Legion of Honor and Presidential Medal of Freedom. Myers also is a Kansas State University Foundation professor of military history and leadership. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Auburn University in 1977. He also graduated from Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1977; U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks in 1981; and the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he completed a program for Senior Executives in National and International Security, in 1991. Throughout Myers’ active duty and world travels, he continued relationships with his friends back home. He has provided instruction, insight and inspiration to current students and the K-State community. In 2000, he presented the 118th Landon Lecture at Kansas State University, where he spoke about the military’s role in international relations. Kansas State University named Gen. Richard B. Myers Hall — the military science building and home of the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs — in honor of his service and dedication. Before becoming interim university president, Myers was chairman of the Kansas State University Foundation Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Mary Jo, serve as co-chairs of the Kansas State University Innovation and Inspiration Campaign to raise $1 billion.

The Big 12 begins its 21st year in 2016-17 as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of fifth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only autonomy conference to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. The Conference’s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 20 years. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 57 NCAA team titles and 625 (through June 15) individual national championships. The Big 12 has been at the forefront in college athletics reform, specifically with student-athlete welfare issues to include cost of attendance, student-athlete time demands and strengthening its policy for concussion diagnosis and management. In 201415, the Big 12 introduced and hosted three “State of Collegiate Athletics” forums to examine the issues facing college athletics. Two were conducted in Washington, D.C and one in New York City. Panelists included respected authorities from intercollegiate athletics, university leadership and sports journalism. The third forum featured a special session comprised of student-athletes. The Big 12 continued the “State of Collegiate Athletics” forums in 2015-16 with Dallas serving as the site for a November 2015 event. The Conference had a banner year on the national stage in 2015-16. Two teams competed in 2015 College Football Playoff New Year’s Bowls for the second consecutive season. Oklahoma made the Conference’s first appearance in the CFP semifinals in 2015, the second year of the structure, while OU men’s basketball advanced to the Final Four. Other highlights included national championships by Texas men’s swimming and diving and Oklahoma women’s gymnastics and softball. National runner-up finishes were recorded by Texas volleyball, Oklahoma State wrestling, TCU equestrian, Texas men’s golf, Oklahoma men’s tennis and Oklahoma State women’s tennis. Three Big 12 squads were among the eight teams that advanced to baseball’s College World Series. The Big 12 lays claim to five Heisman Trophy winners since 1996 and has had a finalist in 12 of its seasons. Twenty-five major individual awards have been won by Big 12 student-athletes in football over the past seven campaigns. Overall, more than 4,800 student-athletes have earned All-America recognition. West Virginia soccer standout Kadeisha Buchanan earned the Hyundai Young Player Award at the 2015 World Cup while playing for her native Canada, given to the player born in 1995 or later that made the biggest impression in the competition. Through its first 20 years, the Big 12 has claimed a team national championship in 17 of the sports it sponsors. The Conference finished the BCS era ranked tied for second with seven appearances in the National Championship Game. The league has finished in the top two of women’s basketball conference RPI in nine of the last 10 years and sent at least 70 percent of its teams to postseason for the seventh-straight season. In men’s basketball, the league has had seven teams earn NCAA bids four times in the past seven years. Every coach has guided a team to the NCAA Tournament - including five that have led teams to the Final Four while seven boast career win percentages of .700 or higher. During the last 12 years a total of 36 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including 19 consecutive seasons. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. National academic accolades have always been strong in the Big 12. Ty Darlington (Oklahoma) was the recipient of the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the Academic Heisman.
Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma) was presented the NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award in January 2015. It recognizes former student-athletes for their successes on the fields and courts, in the classroom and in the community. Since 1996, the Big 12 has a total of 11 honorees for this prestigious award. In the last five seasons, eight student-athletes were recipients of the NCAA Elite 90 Award with volleyball’s Janae Hall (Kansas), men’s basketball’s C.J. Cole (Oklahoma), women’s golf’s Laura Lonardi (Baylor) and baseball’s Tyler Floyd (Texas Tech) picking up the latest honors in 2015-16. The accolade showcases individuals who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers. In its short history, the Big 12 has over 600 Academic AllAmerica recipients, averaging about 30 each season. Big 12 student-athletes have shown commitment to their studies by earning numerous individual academic recognitions. Eleven times in the past 11 years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport, including Frances Silva (West Virginia) for soccer and Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma) for football in 2013. The Big 12 can take pride in other stories that combine on and off the field success. In the fall of 2013, former Texas Tech track and field student-athlete Ifeatu Okafor was named the Big 12’s first NCAA Woman of the Year. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008 while Imani McGee-Stafford (Texas) was honored in 2015. It is given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. Oklahoma State women’s basketball was the inaugural recipient of the “Together We R” Team Award in 2012, recognizing programs that have strived to succeed in the face of adversity. Following a devastating tornado south of Oklahoma City just before the Big 12 Baseball Championship in 2013, several league baseball teams along with other student-athletes, coaches and former Conference players contributed help in a variety of ways. Plus, the Conference contributed $200,000 to the relief efforts. In the fall of 2014, Oklahoma football student-athlete Sterling Shepard and head coach Bob Stoops were honored with the Disney Sports Spirit Award while Kansas football student-athlete JaCorey Shepherd received the Lee Roy Selmon Community Spirit Award. Ty Darlington (Oklahoma) earned the 2015 Wuerffel Trophy which recognizes community service along with athletic and academic success. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships. A total of 381 scholars have received over $2.7 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 20 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. Nearly 5,000 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference. The Conference conducts postseason championships for 20 of its 23 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. In its first 20 years, the Big 12 has distributed approximately $2.6 billion to its member institutions, including a record $30.4 million per institution in 2015-16, an increase of 20 percent over the previous year.
