FIVE TIPS TO TURNING YOUR BEDROOM INTO A NON-TOXIC HAVEN

FIVE TIPS TO TURNING YOUR BEDROOM INTO A NONTOXIC HAVEN

When we decorate, the tiny details of a bedroom are often overlooked. Which makes sense because we are literally asleep most of the time and don’t mentally connect with our surroundings all that well. We select pretty, comfortable bedding and eye-catching decor pieces and believe our work is done. But what we don’t see are all the toxic fumes we breathe in at night...

Organic Natural Bedding Bedding such as sheets, duvets, throws and pillows made from organic natural fibres such as bamboo, Tencel ® , wool, cotton, buckwheat, silk, hemp etc. might cost you more but they will last longer and won’t release any toxins in the room. The natural tones and textures of organic natural fibres blend together beautifully, creating a pleasant tranquil space for all your senses to enjoy. Look out for eco-labels and certifications.

Take on a Minimalistic or Vintage Decor Approach The shift toward leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle is something that should directly affect our day to day purchases. Think about it, every decor item you have ever bought is still on this planet somewhere...Taking on a minimalistic approach to decor is definitely a good idea because minimalists invest in fewer pieces but opt for better quality, artisan or hand-made items that are built to last. Another route that is also effective is to recycle, re-use and reupholster old, vintage pieces to give them new life.

Sleeping is the body’s way to naturally heal, recover and restore. Assist with the process by choosing non-toxic, natural, eco-friendly and sustainable materials. It will be a double-win! Bring Back Bamboo Did you know that bamboo regrows quicker and because eco-friendly growing practices are used they are a great substitute to wood? We are not just talking bedroom furniture. Bamboo is an excellent flooring option too. It is hard and durable, and because it is pest repellent it is an incredible choice for longevity. Bamboo fibres are also a great choice when it comes to matras, duvet and pillow inners as well as bedding. Bamboo is also used to create beautiful decor pieces that will add warmth to your bedroom, without any toxins. Remember to look out for unprocessed bamboo. Use Natural Air Purifying & Essential Oils Use nature’s air purifying plants like Peace Lilies and Snake Plants (Mother-in-law’s Tongue) to filter the air in your bedroom naturally. Add these in beautiful clay pots, glass jars etc. Who doesn’t love it when the air around us not only smells fresh but fragrant also? Don’t use artificial air fresheners as they contain chemicals. Instead, make use of essential oils. Switch off electronics Creating a non-toxic bedroom also has an emotional side to it. Did you know that the blue light in our TVs and devices disturb the body’s natural melatonin production? That’s why it is more difficult to fall asleep after watching television or scrolling through Social Media feeds. Light also affects our internal circadian rhythms so in order to create a true haven of tranquility, switch off and unplug, literally and figuratively.
