ikely, all children will agree that the word they find most terrifying in their school career is MATHS! You would think that with English, being our first language in most schools, spoken and written, it would be that exam results should show high aggregates, but our children, very much like us, struggle to understand the fundamentals. Language, being a crucial skillset, that if wielded effectively, commands attention in the room, boasting intellect, resolving issues and producing effective communication that manages both personal and professional relationships effectively. This is a focus that needs more than its due attention. Kumon focuses on Maths and English, enabling your child to study several years above their school grade, increasing confidence, fluidity and helping develop a process to manage current and ad hoc new equations and situations, intellectually and psychologically, two or three grades above anyone else. This is a learned skillset, no different from a young child, knowing nothing of martial arts, but after spending years under the tutelage of their Master or Sensei (Instructor), developing the skill of obedience and discipline, a skillset that ranks highly, if well developed for any adult trying to be effective in the world we live in today.

ESTATE NEWS BHEE

Kumon aims to develop sound capable people, who will contribute to the global community. At Blue Hills Kumon, we persistently strive to develop our students to become self-learners who come to study beyond their school grade. The Kumon method is for children of all ages and abilities, but I would like to encourage parents to consider enroling their children with Blue Hills Kumon from the age of two and a half years old. This will give them the opportunity to begin their schooling, having knowledge and skills several years above their current school grade. What this looks like, is seeing your child do multiplication and division, or reading fluently by Grade R.

in a dojo. We train our students and facilitate their learning from the worksheets, helping them to learn from the guiding functions on the worksheets, which helps them to learn and think independently and not relying on, and requiring their “teacher” to be the one holding all the information. In self-discovering, children feel a sense of accomplishment, a sense of “I did it!” and this increases their motivation, enabling them to successfully do work they have never seen before.

Our method of developing our students is very closely aligned with the origin of the word Education, stemming from the latin word Educaré, which means to “draw out”. This differs from teaching in the conventional sense, which is where the teacher is relied upon to give the information. At Blue Hills Kumon we draw out the ability that already exist within students – they are naturally smart and we aim to increase their smartness, making them smarter. In doing so, we are developing their independence and our way of teaching is by means of instruction, like

Kumon study is like learning and developing any skill, such as music. In order to learn and improve, daily practice is required. By doing small, manageable amounts of work every day, children are easily able to overcome challenges in the work, and this also helps them to learn perseverance and eventually to be able to achieve their life goals and dreams. letter from the

Estate Manager Greetings Homeowners and Residents!

I hope that you are keeping warm during this bitter winter; warm and healthy! Most homeowners must have noticed the progress with the fuel station. We are excited to have a completed fuel station perfectly located at the front of the estate with the convenience of a Pick n Pay express. We have noticed that many homes have been making changes to their landscaping which is not in line with the landscaping specifications of the Estates. Remember the plant specifications for the Estate is indigenous plants. Gardens need to have at least 80-90% of indigenous plants. The Estate has an approved plant list should the homeowner wish for clarification. This is the ideal season for tree pruning. Fruit trees included! This is also a good time to scarify your grass whereas August is the ideal time to spread compost on your lawns. There is also a new process for stands to submit their landscaping plans for approval. Previously, as per the architectural guidelines, stands would 8 ISSUE 4 2 022

submit their landscaping plans to Studious for approval. The Estate has now appointed a separate landscaping company as part of the committee to manage this process. And to better manage the landscaping of the Estate. We are also planning on going out to tender for the landscaping contract shortly. Homeowners are requested to ensure that their contractors familiarize themselves with the rules and guidelines of the Estate. They are being enforced stringently and homeowners are responsible for their contractors. Several contractors are disregarding the Estate guidelines. All contractors are required to use the contractor’s gate for access, no exceptions will be entertained. Speeding remains a concern despite the installation of speed signage around the Estate. Management is looking at options to address the issue however they are costly solutions. These solutions will be discussed in the upcoming annual general meeting for the Estate. Residents are reminded that this is a community and that we need to be mindful of those around us. Speeding puts those around us at great risk. The speed limit within the Estate is strictly 40km per hour. Homeowners are also reminded that they

Unfortunately, our guards are being abused for performing their duties which is unacceptable. Security works under certain protocols and any requests or arrangements that deviate from these protocols need to be made via the appropriate channels timeously. Homeowners are requested to follow these channels to avoid any frustration by contacting the Estate office. Any homeowner identified as being abusive towards security will be penalized in accordance with the penalty schedule of the Estate. With more homeowners moving into the Estate, we have noticed an increasing number of pets that have been found either roaming the Estate or escaping their stands unaccompanied by owners. Owners must ensure that fencing is adequate to secure their pets within their properties and take the necessary precautions when entering and exiting their property. Stands are reminded that pets need to have identification tags on their collars. Let your pet not be a bone of contention between you, your neighbours, and other owners, residents, or visitors. Homeowners are also to ensure that they clean up their pet’s excrement when in a common area. We have received multiple complaints and seen homeowners walking their pets without cleaning up after their pets in the common area.

You will still require a code for entry, one code for one person. Those residents who use the contractor’s gate for access are required to use the biometric readers or their phones for the automated booms. The manual boom is not permitted to be used. National Arbor

Week

We South Africans celebrate Arbor Week instead of Arbor Day, so we have a whole week dedicated to planting trees. Arbor Week is celebrated in South Africa in the first week of September every year, and is an ideal time to encourage South Africans to join in community ‘greening’ activities. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for the planting of ten million trees for the next five years in South Africa echoed during the country’s 2021 Arbor Week. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), as the custodian of forestry in South Africa, is responsible for the campaign. National Arbor Week is an opportune time to call on all South Africans to plant indigenous 12 ISSUE 4 2022

trees as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management. It affords the government, the private sector, non-governmental and community based organisations and the public to be involved in “greening” their communities. Planting trees and greening human settlements takes place in communities. It is therefore important for the public to join hands with partners in local government and community-based organisations. Greening refers to an integrated approach to the planting, care and management of all vegetation in urban and rural areas, to secure multiple benefits for communities Greening in the South African context takes place in towns, townships and informal settlements specifically because in the past the latter mentioned areas were disadvantaged in terms of planning for parks as well as tree planting in streets and open spaces.

ENVIRONMENTAL BHEE

What is the purpose of Arbor Week? The oxygen we breathe comes from trees, which provide more than aesthetic and ornamental value. Since greening landscapes remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they are an important defence against the effects of climate change. As a result of desertification and urbanization, many environments have become barren. Trees were not planted in township areas in the past, and this had an adverse effect on climate change exposure due to barren urban landscapes. In South Africa’s cities, trees will play a greater role in cooling urban spaces as temperatures rise. There are many ways you can contribute to the greening of our landscapes through community mobilization.

For this year, Wild Route Nursery is giving residents a 10% discount when buying trees from them by using the code ESTATES10OFF22

Estate lifestyles & the role of

POOL COVERS

The estate lifestyle in South Africa has boomed in recent years, driving a proliferation of residential gated communities and a surge in demand for properties on estates. While these communities are favoured for security and convenience, estate homeowners with pools have slightly different factors to consider when it comes to pool maintenance, according to PowerPlastics Pool Covers. “Estate pool owners definitely have different parameters. Two critical issues are sustainability and child safety in this environment,” says Roger Bester, Managing Director of PowerPlastics Pool Covers. The most important factor for estate pools is ensuring child safety. In fact this is a regulatory issue, governed by the SABS through its building Standards. Where there are no individual boundary walls or fences enclosing each property, the pool can be considered a drowning risk. According to the safety Standard (SANS 10134), pool safety must be provided on each property. The most effective way to address this is with the SABS-certified PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover. PowerPlastics Pool Covers was the original company to design what is now the best-selling solid safety cover. Compared to other safety methods like fences or nets, this cover forms a complete barrier over the water, allowing for safety as well as water, power and chemical savings. A growing trend within the South African estate lifestyle is the eco-estate or green gated community, developed and maintained to support sustainability. Green certification and related tools for the domestic setting continue to evolve with solutions driven by new technologies and demand driven by better awareness.

Water and power efficiency are the top criteria for green ratings on estates. A pool pump can consume up to 12% of a household's power usage, and in summer, the average pool can lose up to 105 litres a day to evaporation. The GeoBubble range of bubble covers from PowerPlastics Pool Covers is favoured for its performance and longevity. An EnergyGuard GeoBubble cover reduces energy demand by 50%. Water management is also significant for estates, many of which are developed around vibrant natural ecosystems. One can't simply let backwash water drain into the ecosystem. With a GeoBubble cover, chlorine demand can be reduced by as much as 60%. Evaporation is also curtailed almost entirely. “So what is the best pool cover for this gated environment? Where children are a concern, the first choice is a PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover. A GeoBubble cover is the wise investment for any pool where children are not a factor. “And the best design? The best estate pool is one that is planned with a pool cover in mind. It is a smaller pool with sturdy coping, clean lines and unrestricted access around all sides with no water features, plants or rockeries as these hinder the securing of a cover to restrict children from entering the pool. Importantly, it is a pool within a home that understands and respects natural capital i.e. the ecosystem's resources on which we depend,” concludes Bester. PowerPlastics Pool Covers offers the most comprehensive range of pool covers, available across SA. Visit www.powerplastics.co.za

BHEE WELLNESS

Drink to Your Health By Justine Heald

When it comes to maintaining overall wellbeing, gut health remains top of mind – and for good reason. Your body consists of fungi, bacteria and viruses that make up your larger microbiome. In a nutshell, probiotics are the good, living bacteria that assist in warding off the bad bacteria that cause problems with your gut, immune and overall system. Think of yourself as a house plant, if you will (I’d go with a lucky bamboo). Living soil, consisting of a symbiosis between fungi, protozoa and bacteria, is the microbial life essential to root, stem and foliage health. The same idea extends to us. However, chemical farming practices have impacted the soil and thus the food we eat, and without these living probiotics, it’s little wonder we’re facing major problems like 16 ISSUE 4 2022

obesity and mental health issues. Adding a probiotic supplement to a healthy diet is one good way to feed healthy gut bacteria. While there are countless options on the market, we’re currently loving ours in liquid form. Liquid probiotics come in two main forms: concentrated as a supplement or as part of a probiotic drink (think kombucha, kefir, or tepache). If you find a liquid probiotic with a taste you enjoy, it will be much easier to sip on it throughout the day than to have to remember to take yet another pill. It can also be far less painful to get the little ones to drink a liquid probiotic (especially if it’s tasty!) than to swallow a pill. What’s more, liquid probiotics often contain other nutrients, like vitamins and minerals.

Add the kombucha to a big glass jar and then add the tea mixture (remember, make sure it’s cold!). Seal the jar shut with coffee filters or a few layers of paper towel and secure with a rubber band. 3. Patience is key. It will take two to four weeks to see a clear jelly blob on the surface of your mixture – that is your scoby. 4. Use your (duplicatable) scoby to create your next batch of kombucha!

BEAT THE BURNOUT by Wellness Warehouse

Burnout is a blanket term referring to a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. When you begin to feel like you’re burning out, everything in your life is affected – your career, social life, family and relationships as well as the image you have of yourself. You may feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet the demands of life. Our ‘always on’ modern-day culture coupled with the daily stresses of life and the high expectations we place upon ourselves create a clear recipe for burnout. Stress and burnout are closely related. The stress could be a result of anything, including trauma (for example retrenchment, divorce, bereavement, accident and injury, etc.), financial issues, work pressures, an abusive relationship or illness. When we perceive ourselves to be under threat physically or psychologically, the adrenal glands activate the sympathetic 18 ISSUE 4 2022

nervous system and release a flood of hormones including adrenalin and cortisol. This instinctual acute stress response is sometimes called ‘fight, flight or freeze’. The primitive response to stress prepares the body to react to the danger as it did for our ancestors, and it may become a default pattern. Under extreme or prolonged stress, this cascade of hormones floods the body constantly and overloads the adrenals. This eventually results in a depletion leading to adrenal burnout or chronic fatigue. It can also lead to systemic inflammation, making you susceptible to illness and chronic health conditions. Burnout is not plain exhaustion or job dissatisfaction. The truth is that you may not even realise that you’re suffering from burnout until you’re presented with a health crisis or a mental or physical breakdown.

SLEEP SOUNDLY Are you getting between seven and nine hours of quality sleep per night? Running on empty is not a badge of honour. Poor sleep has dire consequences for your body and mind, including a weakened immune system and poor cognition. If your sleep is compromised by insomnia, intermittent waking or sleep apnoea, this can exacerbate or even lead to burnout. Practise good sleep hygiene by avoiding screens one hour before bedtime, keeping electronic devices out of the bedroom, having a light early dinner, practising relaxation exercises, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol at night.

What Is Scandinavian Interior Design? Key Principles to Follow By Elizabeth Sweet

Master the spartan, natureinspired aesthetic of Scandinavian design with advice from seasoned experts. For Swedish interior designer and stylist Pella Hedeby, Nordic design produces “an airy, calm and relaxed feeling.” Her best advice: Keep color tones and textures aligned. “A guiding principle is to establish harmony with one’s environment,” she says. Nordic homes are “harmonious” and truly easy to live in. Learn the top elements of Scandinavian interiors, below, to incorporate the soothing aesthetic into your own home.

Use Natural Materials Scandinavians find great inspiration in the outdoors. “We honor it with the use of nature’s materials,” Hedeby says. This includes wood and stone that patina beautifully with age. “A local limestone such as Norrvange,” is ideal, Hedeby says, as well as “concrete and plaster or matte painted walls.” Look for textures with natural warmth, she suggests. “Schemes are inspired by pale sea views, white stone beaches, and the grays of the winter woods and mountains.” 24 ISSUE 4 2022

INTERIOR BHEE

These comforting textures work well for sofas and chairs, too. “Sheep’s wool is typically used for upholstery fabrics and pelts,” Hadland explains. “Colors tend to be natural and undyed. Since chemical dyes were expensive and less frequently used, grays, blacks, beiges, browns, and whites became the prominent colors.”

Keep It Simple Hedeby says Scandinavians follow the basic principle that less is more. “The decluttered style is easy to live with, and the materials age beautifully with a natural patina. It’s sustainable and long-lasting,” she says. “With a beautiful base with natural warmth, you don’t need a lot of things to get an inviting feeling at home.”

Choose a Neutral Color Palette Stick to a soothing palette of whites, warm grays, and sandy hues, Hedeby says. The designer and stylist’s favorite wall color is a shade of greige—10341 from Norwegian paint company Jotun Lady. Painting with added minerals can provide a natural lime paint texture, too. If you’re building or renovating, honor the beauty of raw materials. Choose “a divine Dinesen floor and keep the rest pure and simple.”

Shop Scandi Classics

Nordic spaces lack excessive ornamentation, so start editing! According to Hadland, the Nordic style is “clean and clear, avoiding clutter or disorganization.”

Add Ambience with Lighting Due to extreme changes in temperature and sunlight, table and floor lamps are crucial in Nordic countries, Hedeby says. “Creating a warm ambience and convivial setting for the home, especially in winter, has been an important priority.” The quintessential living room in a nice Scandinavian home will have several lighting zones with up to 10 different fixtures, from pendants to floor and table lights,

Once your space is a blank canvas, add Danish design staples to bring the Scandi interior to life. Hedeby recommends Carl Hansen’s Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner and the J39 Chair by Borge Mogensen. “They give an instant Nordic minimalist and Scandinavian feel to an interior,” she says.

Layer Natural Textures A Scandinavian space isn’t complete without hygge, a word meaning warmth and comfort. “Adding some cozy textures, sheepskins, and blankets in linen and wool create that soft Nordic look,” Hedeby says.

GARDENING BHEE

How to attract birds to your garden Now is an excellent time to provide nesting, resting, feeding and breeding sites for birds in your garden. By life is a garden

Bird-friendly plants The best feeding programme for birds is to plant shrubs and trees which offer nature’s menu. Aloes, watsonias, lion’s ear (Leonotis spp.), red-hot pokers ( spp.) and wachendorfias will attract nectar feeding birds such as the sunbird. Seed eating birds are attracted to the seed heads of grasses and grains. Plant patches of mixed bird seed and you’ll be fascinated to see the response from local birds. Seed eaters also thrive the seeds of ordinary daisies (such as the euryops daisy). Leave the dried out dead heads of daisies for as long as you can to give the birds time to take most of the seed at the end of summer. To attract fruit eating birds, such as the loeries, plant fruit producing plants. Try the tree fuchsia (Halleria lucida), dune crow-berry (Rhus crenata) or white stinkwood (Celtis africana). Did you know that the local weavers, sparrows, loeries, sunbirds and even crested barbets will flock to your garden if you discover how to plant up bird-friendly plants or install a nesting box, bird feeder or bird bath in your garden. This is a basic guide on how to attract birds to your garden:

BHEE GARDENING

Roosting sites Established trees will naturally provide a source of shelter and roosting spots for many birds and a garden which is well planted with indigenous trees will attract numerous birds throughout the year. Good roosting sites are provided by the Henkel’s yellowwood (Podocarpus henkelii), fever tree (Acacia xanthophloea), karee (Searsia lancea), sweet thorn (Acacia karroo) or buffalo thorn (Ziziphus mucronata. Creepers such as the black-eyed Susan (Thunbergia elata) can be draped around the branches of trees to provide a secluded nesting site for robins or flycatchers. Grasses, including reeds and bulrushes are valuable suppliers of nesting material to weavers who suspend their nests from trees.

Mulch and compost Leave fallen leaves and logs in the garden as these will provide micro-habitat for various insects, grubs and worms, which will in turn attract insect feeders such as Cape robinchats, Karoo and olive thrushes as well as African hoopoes. These birds love the dense undergrowth of gardens where they turn over leaves and debris in search of grubs. Dead logs and tree trunks make ideal nesting spots for birds such as barbets and woodpeckers.

Water for birds Every garden should have a bird bath in the quieter part of the garden preferably near thick foliage and established trees, so that the birds 30 ISSUE 4 2022

can perch nearby and not feel exposed. Avoid placing a bird bath directly underneath tree branches, as falling leaves and bird droppings may soil the water. Keep the bird bath topped up over winter, as many birds will frequently visit to drink and bath. Bird baths come in various shapes and sizes, but most importantly, they should be anchored securely so that they don’t topple over.

Feed the birds Feeding stations for garden birds come in a range of shapes and sizes. A common variety is the seed-dispersing tube type feeder whereby you place bird seed on top by removing a cap. A feeding plate attaches to the bottom and this will hold the seeds which are gravity fed. As the birds feed, the seeds will filter down and spread over the plate. These are often equipped with small perches, allowing only small birds such as finches and sparrows to feed, but making it difficult for large seed eaters such as doves and pigeons to perch and feed, which would otherwise rapidly finish off the bird seed. These feeders can be hung from a tree branch. Other bird feeders include platforms where bread, seed, fruit and suet and can placed. They often have spikes where fruit can be anchored for fruit eating birds. These bird feeders can be placed on top of a sturdy pole or hung from a tree branch. For the really dedicated, consider breeding your own mealworm colony, which will provide a delicious treat for grub feeding birds.

Nesting boxes Hollowed out logs, available from garden centres, are a favourite with barbets who use them for breeding. Anchor the logs vertically on tree trunks several metres off the ground. Traditional square or rectangular box nests are also available and can be anchored securely around various parts of the garden. 2 022 ISSUE 4 31

Spinach & Pepper Roulade Serves 4 - 6 INGREDIENTS • 4 red peppers • 1 tsp salt, plus extra for seasoning • 4 tsp olive oil • 4 tsp vinegar • 400 g spinach, chopped • 3 eggs, separated • Pepper, to taste • 250 g cream cheese with chives • 50 g sundried tomatoes METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line a Swiss roll baking pan with baking paper. 2. Grill the peppers in the oven, until the skins are blackened. Remove from the oven and place in a bowl, then cover with clingwrap. As the peppers sweat and cool, the skin is loosened, making it easy to remove from the peppers. Rinse the peppers to remove any leftover blackened skin. 3. Place the peppers in a bowl, then add 1 teaspoon of salt, the olive oil and vinegar. Allow to marinate in the vinegar mixture for 30 minutes. 4. Cook the spinach for 5 minutes, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Squeeze the water out of the spinach and set aside.

Excerpted from Veggielicious by Mokgadi Itsweng, published by NB Publishers and available at leading bookstores and online

5. Place the spinach, egg yolks, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth and well mixed. 6. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then fold into the spinach mixture. 7. Spread the mixture evenly over the baking paper and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until firm to the touch. Allow to cool. 8. Once cooled, slowly and carefully loosen the spinach layer from the baking paper, making sure not to tear it. This makes it easier to roll. 9. Spread the cream cheese evenly over the spinach layer, then top with the peppers and sundried tomatoes. 10. Slowly roll up the roulade, using the paper to guide you. 11. Wrap with clingwrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up before slicing and serving. 32 ISSUE 4 2022
