From The

Estate Manager’s Desk Dear Heritage Hill Residents, Welcome to April! Some good news is that the water restrictions have been partially lifted on 13 March 2017! The one restriction that remains is the irrigation of gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler between

06:00 and 18:00. A Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure, Darryl Moss, said that residents of Tshwane are only allowed to irrigate gardens between 18:00 and 22:00. We urge all Heritage Hill residents to continue to be water conscious with this precious mineral.

started pursuing City of Tshwane and others to get this project completed, much to our dismay. We have now learned that another cable is needed inside the Estate to complete this “ring” and it is the responsibility of the City of Tshwane to supply, install and connect this cable.

On a slightly less happier note, I would like to give you feedback on the electricity ring-feed cable, which was installed about two months ago. We were informed by City of Tshwane that this ring-feed cable would solve the long power interruptions we previously had, due to cable theft.

I will again try my utmost best to get this project completed. One positive from this is that Heritage Hill now has two electrical supplies to the Estate - one from the Nellmapius substation and another from the Olievenhoutbosch substation, which will benefit us in the future, should the additional cable to complete the ring-feed be installed.

We truly believed that this was going to be a major improvement for us (Heritage Hill) and we

The HOA do apologize for this misconception - it was however a

estate news little beyond our control. Lastly, the road resurfacing is progressing well, despite the rain interruptions in early March. Northviewlane, Hilltop Drive and High Grove Close have been completed. Lucia Lileen & Wagon Trail Close are also partially complete. I will keep you up-to-date regarding the resurfacing of the remainder of the Estate’s roads. Feel free to write your comments or share your news with us by e-mailing: elsavs@heritage-hill.co.za

THE HISTORY OF HERITAGE HILL

9

You are now living on the Farm Brakfontein, which has been in the Erasmus family for 7 generations since 1838. The cemetery finds itself nestled among a dense cluster of trees closer to where Trinityhouse and future proposed developments on Heritage Hill will be taking place. 10

During a peek visit to the graveyard we thought it wise to inform you of the rich legacy we now form a part of. Quite a

few generations of the Erasmus Family has been buried in the beautiful, tranquil cemetery of which Rasmus Elardus Erasmus (Dubbelle) and his wife Louisa Catharina were the pioneers. One of the tombstones is quite remarkable and a must see. The marble of the tombstone was imported from Italy and erected in memory of one of the younger brothers who died during the Anglo Boer War. “Dubbelle built a farmhouse (Ga Rouge Restaurant in Candlewood Estate) for his wife and there, Louwrens Jacobus Abram Erasmus, their oldest son was born. He in return married twice due to the untimely death of his first wife.

Aletta Adriana, his second wife, gave birth to Rasmus Elardus Erasmus. Louwrens Jacobus Erasmus found a Bushman girl in the veldt, left behind by her tribe due to the fact that she had polio and he and Aletta Adriana raised her. Alias Roos (as she was known) made an imprint with her walking stick on Aletta’s grave and pointed out that she would like to be buried with her “ounooi”. Her wish was granted when she passed away at the age of a hundred. Rasmus Elardus Erasmus married Lucia Lilleen and they lived in the Farmstead on Heritage Hill

Estate. They had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. The oldest daughter, Tannie Stephany, is a resident on our Estate and her sister lives in Knysna. Lucia Lilleen Erasmus passed away in November 2007 at the age of 94 and was buried next to her husband. Both their sons, Louw who died in a motor vehicle accident and his younger brother, Francois who died of diabetes, are laid to rest in this cemetery. Some of the Lucia Lilleen and Rasmus Erasmus grandchildren and great grandchildren still live on the Farm Brakfontein as residents of Heritage Hill today.

Our 13th Market in the Village

Thank you for supporting our exhibitors at Trinityhouse. The outcome was surprisingly good despite the unpredictable weather! (there is an in-house amongst the residents…if the market tent goes up we can expect some rain!) There was, as always, a variety of delicious foods, refreshing drinks, art and craft exhibitors and lots for the kids to do. We were entertained by Andre Nel with his beautiful voice and guitar medleys. Market in the Village was established 6 years ago. Its initial purpose was to promote and enhance creativity within the Heritage Hill Estate, for the pure and simple reason to get to know your

neighbors. This also later became a way of “putting Heritage Hill on the map” which we truly believed did happen.

estate news

The first Market in November 2011 was an intimate “love affair” and soon we were graciously “forced” to host a few more of these. The Market has however outgrown our lovely Estate and was moved to Trinityhouse Heritage Hill School at the beginning of 2016 to host the future Market in the Village events. We are hosting two Markets a year, Easter Market and Spring Market. Although we have also hosted a Valentine’s, Mountain Bikers and Christmas Market with great success, we decided to only pursue the Easter and Spring Markets to attract new visitors and force people to mentally note this calendar highlight.

15

estate news

Like other Markets, we continually embark on searching for the most updated and uniquely creative trends, but we tend on ultimately falling back on what makes us tick. A market with friendly outgoing people who puts heart and soul into each masterpiece, be it a cupcake or a painting and the delight on their faces when visitors appreciate it. The destination of our Markets was the key ingredient for the ambiance as our visitors and exhibitors alike reported that hosting these Markets on Friday evenings makes them far more attractive. The Markets are held as a platform for passionate and creative entrepreneurs. Old and young are invited to enjoy delicious foods, drinks and entertainment, a fun filled outing for the whole family. A rich legacy lingers on at Heritage Hill and we would like you to be a part of it. 16

The Spring Market in the Village @ Trinityhouse Heritage Hill is planned for Friday 1 September.

Camp in the Park

Our very first dad & child “Sleep out in the Park” was an enormous success! Nothing like a camp fire and melted marshmallows get a dad and child excited! 21 tents were built while a couple of dads and kids, who didn’t camp, joined the braai and social gathering. The kids were running and playing till way past their bedtime!

18

At sunrise, a cup of coffee and freshly baked rusks, were enjoyed by everyone – all the dads had an immense feeling of being blessed by spending some quality time with their kid(s).

Roaming Pets

A common grievance in any estate is that of roaming, barking/meowing pets! Here, at Heritage Hill, it is no different but how we solve the problem will personify us.

20

The rules regarding pets are quite simple: • No more than 2 pets per stand; • Keep them behind closed gates; • Always keep them on a leash when you go for long walks & make sure you have a poop scoop/ plastic bag to pick up their‘waste’along the way; (owners of pets roaming the streets without a leash will be fined R 500.00) • Feed them, wash them and love them as they are not meant to be a temporary toy or an additional alarm system; • When they do bark for nothing at night or during the day please let them in as they are keeping others awake; • A pet registration form is available on the website to be completed by all residents – this is a requirement by the HHHOA to be able to keep pets

We trust that all residents know that living in an estate means that your usual tolerance levels have to be sufficiently topped up on a day-to-day basis for various reasons: • Cultural and religious differences; • Likes and dislikes; • Different kind of personalities; • Many more other differences we have in our rainbow nation These challenges can easily be overcome by having mutual respect for each and by just keeping to the rules, including the Estate’s.

The simplest reason is to help save the lives of patients in need of blood transfusions. Just knowing that your one unit of blood can save up to three lives is a rewarding enough feeling. Every unit of blood once tested and deemed safe for transfusion is separated into, red blood cells, platelets and Plasma.

Attracting

Birds to your Garden

Birds will visit your garden if there’s plenty of food available, so the first thing to do is to set up feeding stations. Hanging peanut and seed feeders in trees will be an instant attraction. Then you need to work on providing natural food, cover and even nesting sites. Water in the garden in the form of a pond, running stream, bird bath or water feature is an instant attraction for birds not only to drink from, but also for them to clean themselves.

Why detoxing is good FOR YOUR

Health

Raise your hand if you start each week with all the intensions to eat right and exercise more, only to be crushed by the reality of a few skipped breakfasts, drive-through lunches and one exceptionally poor effort in the gym? Life is hectic. Our busy schedules, and often a lack of motivation interfere with our plans for better health. Although the body’s lymphatic system, liver, kidneys, blood, lungs, skin and colon all work together to rid it of toxins naturally, a poor lifestyle makes it more difficult to get rid of these toxins quickly enough, allowing them to build up. As a result we feel tired and bloated, experience frequent headaches and cravings, struggle to lose weight, struggle

to sleep at night and pick up illnesses quicker, to name but a few. With the winter fast approaching now is a great time to detox your body. Here are some of the benefits of detoxing: 1. It helps to boost your immune system – If your body has control over toxins it will be naturally stronger to fight against colds and flues. Giving your body a natural boost this winter is always a good idea. 2. It helps you sleep better at night – The fewer toxins you have built up in your system the better sleep you will have at night. 3. It enhances energy levels – The

better you are able to rest every night the more energized your mind, body and soul will be. Fewer toxins have a direct effect on your mental, physical and emotional capacity, allowing you to think clearer. 4. It increases your metabolism – An unhealthy diet is filled with toxins such as preservatives etc., which directly impact our metabolisms and prevent us from losing weight like we use to. Fewer toxins will help you lose weight normally. 5. It improves your skin quality – Free radicals and heavy metals affect the quality of our skin making it age quicker, become more oily or more dry and prone to blemishes and impurities. Fewer toxins allow your skin to take up more nutrients and antioxidants, helping it age slower.

27

health & wellness 6. It restores balance to your body functions – A healthy body is one where the hormones, digestive and nervous systems are all balanced and working together efficiently. Detoxing restores this balance. 7. It helps prevent chronic diseases – Detoxing can help rid the body of toxins naturally, so as to prevent long-term damage in the form of chronic diseases such as cancers etc.

28

Ways in which to detox: Detoxing has become quite popular over the past few years. In fact, it has become such a fad that many health professionals have warned consumers to be weary of strange powders and shakes, and also not to overdo it.

The truth is that a healthy, controlled detox has exceptional benefits to the body. Detox can be done through: • juicing; • reflexology; • massages; • colon cleansing; and • a combination of the above. Furthermore, you can help your body’s natural detoxification by: • reducing sugar intake; • eating more organic foods; • exercising frequently; • drinking tea; • drinking 8 glasses of water daily; • visiting a sauna now and again; and • exfoliating.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make A Lemon Meringue DesirĂŠ Koekemoer

If you are a bit of a sweet tooth like me, you will agree when I say, there is always room for dessert. I would like to share this easy lemon meringue recipe with you Ingredients

32

1 x 250g container of mascarpone 1 vanilla pod, cut & seeds scratched 1 x 280 g madeira cake, cut into 1cm thick slices 1 x 300 ml bottle of lemon curd 2 egg whites 210g caster sugar

Method Mix the mascarpone and vanilla seeds to a smooth mixture. Divide between 6 glass dishes of your choice, I use something that is transparent to see the beautiful layers. Place two slices of cake on top. Divide the lemon curd between the glasses. Beat the egg whites with an electric beater until soft and firm peaks form. Add the sugar gradually while you continue whisking until shiny and stiff. Put spoonfuls of meringue on top of each glass and brown with a kitchen blowtorch. If you do not have blowtorch use the oven grill.

DĂŠcor trends

to modernise your home in 2017 33

If you are in the mood to give your home a fresh look this year, you’ll love 2017’s globally trending colours, prints and finishes. It appears as if this year is all about bold colours, dramatic prints and 3D textures, as well as bringing the outdoors inside. Many of these trends have spilled over from international runways, but you can use it any which way to give it your personal spin. Go all out by painting a room in one of the “it” colours of the year, or be more subtle by incorporating these trends through décor pieces such as artisan vases, scatter cushions, indoor plants etc.

34

Going nowhere this year is marble, subway tiles and the use of faux finishings to name but a few. In fact in some countries these three will only grow in popularity. In South Africa, and Gauteng in particular, as we head into a sunny, yet still surprising cold winter, the following trends will create a warm atmosphere indoors, and by the time summer comes back around again it will

work equally well, if not better.

Colour

Bright Green – “Greenery”, a vibrant bright green, has been indicated as the 2017 Pantone Colour of the Year. The ideal colour to turn an average living area on its head. Navy – Navy is this year’s black. Instead of turning to black to give a room a little edge, bring in navy and enjoy the difference it will make. Jewels – Jewel colours like amethyst, ruby, sapphire etc. has been everywhere on the 2017 runways. No wonder that a deep amethyst colour, “Shadow”, has been indicated as the Colour of the Year. A complete 360 on white, which was 2016’s “it” colour.

Prints / Patterns

Butterflies – It almost feels like a return to the late 90s as butterflies purple and lime green returns to the spotlight, but they are back. Together with the underlying “indoor meets outdoor” theme, it makes sense. Mixed Patterns – Whether it is a throw, duvet, couch, curtains or pillow – mixed patterns in all the various trending colours of the year are no longer clashing but very on trend.

Tropical – As inspired by the creations of Marc Jacobs and Prada, tropical prints and patterns have spilled over from the high fashion scene to the home.

lifestyle & Décor

Finishes

Brass – Add some brass to your kitchen and bathroom. Used in conjunction with the year’s jewel colours you’ll be able to create a memorable look. Cork – With texture being a big thing in 2017, cork is another way to get it right. Terracotta – The warm tones of terracotta has made a comeback (or has it ever left?). Get the natural “grounded” look through exposed brick walls or terracotta tiles.

STAND A CHANCE TO WIN A INGAADI SPA VOUCHER TO SPOIL MOM

Much like Valentine’s Day and other “commercial” days of the year, Mother’s Day is often something we attack with a robot-like approach. A Sunday lunch with mom, a gift of flowers, a hamper of wonderful bath products or silk pajamas. And of course she’ll love these gifts and she adores having all of her loved ones over for a meal. But every now and again it is time to shake things up and surprise mom with something different. So go the extra mile and plan something memorable for your mom, mamma, moekie, moo because she deserves the best!

the two of you can spend time together in the process. Use the time to bond and catch up on what’s going on in her life. And yes, this applies to men too.

or more of her chores like cleaning the house, doing the laundry, making dinner etc. Her list of daily to dos is endless so you’ll have plenty of things to choose from.

2. Mom’s night out Moms are different. While one mom would love a night out at the theatre, another would prefer to paint the town red. You know her, so plan an evening out for just the two of you. Ideas: • A 7-course meal at a fancy restaurant • Classy cocktails • A ballet or theatre show • Dinner and a movie

4. Take her on a mini break Have you and your mother ever gone away together alone? There is always a first for everything. It doesn’t need to be an entire weekend away, and it need not be far or cost you an arm and a leg. Scoot her off to Ingaadi Spa for 24-hours of spoils, or book a quaint B&B in Dullstroom or Parys.

Here are 5 ideas to trigger your creativity…

Make it a surprise and ask her to dress up and be ready at a specific time.

1. A treatment for two Book a treatment for the two of you. It doesn’t matter whether it is a mani or a pedi or both, a full body massage or mud bath – make sure it is something your mom will love and that

3. “Save her time” Simple things in life are often worth more. Remember the Dial Direct ad where the son does his mother’s chores to save her time? So why not save your mom time by doing one

5. Make her something from the heart Everyone has a talent. Maybe you are great with crafts, words, art or music. Whatever your talent set aside some time over the coming days to create your mother something from the heart. Make her a painting or write her a song. She’ll adore it.
