STAY WARM THIS WINTER FATHER'S DAY COMPETITION TIME

3

Dear Heritage Hill Residents,

4

As James Wan once said: “It's pretty scary to know how quickly time flies”. I do however want to remind you to keep focusing on the beautiful things nature gives us every day… different color leaves of deciduous trees, dew drops on flowers, etc.

There are a few things I would like to remind and inform you about – Since 2012 Heritage Hill has started with an active community project to reach out to the less fortunate. Our annual Winter Warmer drive was once again a big success. Some residents joined for the “soup & bread” lunch. Others participated through dropping off a lot of soups and blankets, which we really appreciate. We were able to reach out to the Hanna Charity and Centurion SPCA with a trailer full of blankets. (See the photos on page 20) May I also ask all residents to kindly support the monthly initiatives too. The monthly products also go to the Hanna Charity and they reach out to communities of all cultures, but especially underprivileged children. (The monthly products list is on page 10) Contractor's access: The HOA's number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of all its residents

and for this purpose we have a number of security related rules. In order for these rules to work effectively, we do need all our residents to adhere to the security specific requirements. We have made a concession whereby residents are allowed to grant contractors access by providing them with a code to do small jobs around the house, normally not taking more than three days. Should any such projects take longer than the three days allowed, then residents are obliged to register all their contractors by completing all the supporting documents at the security office. We will be monitoring this rule more strictly and will lock out contractors working longer than three days without registration. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Building Activities: We would like to thank our residents

for their co-operation during the road resurfacing project. All roads are now complete. Properties under construction is five Res 1 Homes. Stand 982 is still under construction with an expected completion date of 31 May 2017 on all external building. There will still be activities to complete the interior of some of the units. According to the developer, four units have already been sold. Stand 1084 (Squirrels Leap) - all external building activities are complete and six units have been sold. Stand 1086 – Laying of the foundations for all 18 units are currently underway and building is expected to commence shortly. Parks: All our street islands were upgraded and are looking fabulous!

estate news All the parks also received attention with park 8 (corners of Wetland Crescent, Northbound Lane and Fountainview Lane) the last one still under construction. This is expected to be finished by midJune. Water Restrictions: Just a friendly reminder on the water restrictions as per the Tshwane guidelines - we often find gardeners/domestic workers or employees watering gardens and washing cars with garden hoses which has certain restrictions. No irrigation or hose watering of gardens and cars between 11h00 and 16h00. Thank you for your co-operation. Kind regards

Fred Botes

Sunday 7 May 2017 Winter Warmer Community Project How can the Heritage Hill community respond to the challenges and opportunities of feeding and keeping the less fortunate warm during winter? Well, we did it and a very warm thank you to everyone who participated and helped us to make a difference in our community! Lennie van der Westhuizen from Pioneer Foods, arranged 50 fresh loaves of bread for our 6th Winter Warmer Drive. The beautiful decorated tables were done by Lomien from Purple Bell and once again our expectations were exceeded. It made it extra special for our “soup & bread lunch. On the Monday we were able to reach out to the Hanna Charity with buckets of soup, loaves of bread and Centurion SPCA with a trailer full of blankets. Both institutions were overwhelmed with joy in receiving the donations.

fallen leaves summer's wave goodbye Put autumn leaves to work in your garden -

22

Why are leaves valuable to a gardener? They are free: require no effort on your part to get them working for you. So instead of sweeping them up into black plastic bags, incorporate them into your compost heaps and pile dried leaves into your vegetable beds - they will mostly decompose over the winter. When spring arrives you simply mix in whatever is left.

estate news Make leaf mould. Leaf mould is simply wet leaves that have decomposed into a rich, black oil-like substance that make perfect mulch for plants. Pile the leaves in a spot where they're out of the way and won't blow away. Or make a large circle of chicken wire, 1.5 metres high and pile the leaves in them. Wet the leaves so that they will rot. Turning the pile a few times during the winter will accelerate the process. More valuable facts on adding leaves to your garden this autumn and winter: •Will add nutrients, including phosphorous and potassium •Increase the soils microbial life •Boost its water-holding capacity •Improve its structure, known as tilth (“texture”) Source: www.gardenshop.co.za

Caring for your trees

Trees are the backbone of any garden and should be cared for on a regular

basis. We tend to overlook them as they look so big and permanent but they also need love and attention. Regular pruning is important to keep the trees looking good although we should not give in to our love of pruning so much as to take off all the dead wood. Dead wood is so essential for nesting sites for birds and breeding sites for other creatures. Before you start pruning make sure your tools are sharp and clean. Dirty tools will spread disease and fungus in your tree. If your secateurs and saw are blunt they can damage the bark and this could also spread disease, as the bark protects the tree. When pruning and shaping your trees it is important to keep in mind what the natural shape of the tree is and to keep the shape as near as possible. You cannot drastically change the natural growth form of a tree, for example you cannot take one that has a natural umbrella shape and force it to keep a narrow form. Whether you cook it, fry it or juice it – do whatever you can to add beetroot to your diet this winter. Not only is this humble vegetable full of anti-oxidants to keep you healthy, but they also assist in reducing chronic inflammation and lowering blood pressure. Beetroot are very adaptable and can be sowed throughout the year. Make sure your soil is rich and loose, and add bone meal or aged compost to the soil before sowing. It requires full sun to partial shade and harvesting should happen eight to 10 weeks after sowing. Once you have harvested your beetroot, the options of what to do with them are endless.

Here are some ideas to add a bit of colour to your recipes during the cold months: Juice Make your own beetroot juice by running one large beet through a juicer followed by two apples and one one-inch piece of ginger. You can add two ice blocks to the juice if you want to. It’s a refreshing and tasty way to add vegetables to your daily food intake. This juice can be enjoyed at any time of the day – but is ideal as a midmorning snack. (Source: www.healthambition.com) Salad A salad in winter? Oh, yes! Shake things up a bit and add beetroot to your winter salad. Just because the weather is cold doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying healthy salads. Try the delicious Roasted Butternut, Beetroot and Avocado Salad recipe from

www.food24.com with your dinner tonight. The salad is full of goodness and the perfect blend of coriander, chilli sauce and mint will heat you up from the inside. It will definitely add some colour to your plate and quickly become one of your favourite recipes. Soup If you’re looking for a gorgeous, healthy and very tasty beetroot soup… you’ve found it. This Fresh Beetroot Soup recipe makes use of only seven ingredients and you can choose to make it healthier by omitting the cream or adding it to get the complete comfort out of a hot soup on a cold night. By making use of a food processor right at the end, you can choose how chunky you want your soup to be. Head on over to www.allrecipes.co.uk and spoil the family tonight.

How to stay warm this winter – the eco-friendly way Wilma van der Westhuizen

During the winter months, staying warm is not only comfortable and cosy, but also necessary. Items like electric blankets and oil heaters have the ability to heat up a room, but it also has the same effect on your electricity bill.

32

So how do you keep warm during the cold weather without breaking the bank? Here are some tips on how to ensure you stay warm and cosy, while being kind to Mother Nature and your electricity bill:

2

MOVE IT We all now it’s much easier to get up early during the summer when the sun is out and the birds are chirping, but exercising during the winter is a great way to get your body warmed up. Whether you exercise indoors or outdoors, make sure you’re dressed appropriately and don’t forget to warm up so that you don’t hurt yourself. Not only is exercising a great way to get warm, but just think how grateful you’ll be when the summer is here and you’re in great shape.

3

BOTTLE IT UP Making use of a hot water bottle is a great way to stay warm because the water tends to stay warm for a long time. You can even reheat the same water over and over again when it gets too cold. Hot water bottles have become fashionable again so make the best of staying warm during the cold months and add a bit of style to your winter.

1

COVER UP Covering up in winter can mean a range of things – layers of clothing, hats, socks, scarves, blankets, and even rugs. By covering a bare floor with a rug will not only prevent heat from escaping through the floor, but will also give you that cosy feeling.

5 4 EAT IT Delicious stews, soups and casseroles are all great ways to heat yourself up from the inside. Try out new recipes or give your old family secret recipes a go again. If you keep it healthy and add a lot of fresh vegetables to your meals, you will also help to fight off those nasty winter bugs. Don’t forget to add herbs and spices like chilli, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper to your dishes for that added, natural bit of warmth.

WRAP IT While it might be a strange concept, get a blanket for your geyser and wrap it up during the winter months. A geyser blanket is very affordable and a great way to keep the water warmer for longer without having to turn the thermostat up.

lifestyle & Décor

6

CLOSE IT If there’s a room or area in your house that isn’t being used that often, close the door to that room. The bigger the space, the bigger the chances of it losing its heat. Make sure all the windows are closed so that the heat won’t be able to escape and to avoid cold air coming through.

There are many ways to keep warm while being kind to the environment and your pocket. Try some of these tips and see for yourself.
