Estate Manager Welcome autumn! (Southern Hemisphere officially started on Friday 20 March and will end on Saturday 20 June). In South Africa we can look forward to: Winter – 1 June – 31 August Spring – 1 September – 30 November Summer – 1 December – 28/29 February
ESTATE NEWS The dam area has become a major problem as some of those who fish leave behind fishing utensils, endangering other children or adults. Please do what is right so everyone can enjoy the area over weekends. Residents Communication: Communications were sent out to all residents informing them of the levy increase effective 1 April 2020. The current levy is R1800 and the new levy will be R1900. This decision was made based on the anticipated change in expenses and proposed budget for the ensuing financial year. Nature: Should you find any bees or snakes on or nearby your premises please do not kill them. We have experts on close call to help relocate them. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees and other plants. This, in turn, provides food and shelter for other creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to coexist.

GARDENING
Indigenous Plant of The Month: Portulacaria afra
(Spekboom) Also referred to as elephant bush, dwarf jade plant and porkbush, the Spekboom has gained “celebrity status in the plant-world over the past several months due to its carbon sequestering powers. Being 10 times more effective per hectare than the Amazon rainforest at removing carbon from the air, we thought it fitting to make Spekboom our first focus plant. ESTATE GARDENING NEWS
Interesting facts about the Spekboom: Once rooted, it is drought-resistant. It makes great indoor plants in areas with bright light (proper drainage is essential, water every 2 weeks). This species is also ideal as Bonsai plants. As a perennial succulent Spekboom stem clippings can be potted or planted directly into the ground to form a new plant. When planted in the ground Spekboom can grow between 2.5m and 4.5 m in height. Spekboom will root in sand as well. It binds soil and can therefore prevent soil erosion. This plant can be planted outside in full sun or in semi-shade. Under the right circumstances some of the variants of this plant could sprout tiny pink or white flowers. Leaves are edible to goats and elephants but also humans. It has a lemony, tart taste that works well in soups and salads.
There are several different varieties: Urea, Cork Bark. Foliis variengatus, Limpopo, Medio-picta, Prostrata, Variegata

YOGA TO
sleep
By Kristel Crevits from EonYoga, a studio offering multiple classes and styles in Pretoria. www.eonygoga.com
Practising these five yoga poses before bedtime will relax and calm you, helping to prepare your body for sleep. Do you struggle to fall asleep or find it difficult to sleep peacefully? Sleep deprivation could lead to more than just a case of the yawns. It can cause depression, weight gain and even Type 2 Diabetes. Experts recommend an average of six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep nightly, and this is where yoga can help. The soothing practice will help lower stress levels, calm the mind and relieve tension in the body. Rather than feeling hopeless about sleeping issues, try these five easy prebedtime yoga poses for a goodnight’s rest and to improve the quality of your sleep. BEDTIME ROUTINE ‘Yoga connects you with your breathing, and this stimulates the nervous system,’ says Eon Swiegers, yoga teacher, trainer and founder of EonYoga. Try to hold each of these five poses for three to five breaths. If you can’t manage the full sequence, simply do what you can, holding each position gently without strain or pain. Listen to your body, breathe deeply and ease more deeply into each posture with each exhale. This will elongate your stretch and release the tension in your body. Stretching has a calming effect, as it stimulates blood flow and slows the heart rate. LET’S GET STARTED In preparation, sit in a comfortable position with your knees folded and your back straight (use the wall for support if needed). Rest your hands on your legs. Close your eyes and take five deep breaths. Focus on the cold air entering your nostrils and filling your lungs, and the warm air exhaling through the nose. 1. JANU SIRSASANA (HEAD-TO-KNEE POSE) Sit on the floor with your back straight and your legs extended in front of you (use the wall for support if needed). Keep your knees bent if necessary to keep your spine from rounding. Bend the right knee, bringing the base of the right foot into the inner left thigh and letting the right knee flop sideways towards the floor. If the knee doesn’t touch, support it with a pillow. Inhale and lengthen the spine. TIP: If you have tight hamstrings, place a folded blanket or pillow under your sitting bones. 2. BADDHA KONASANA (BOUND ANGLE POSE) Sit on the floor with your back straight and bring the base of both feet together as close as possible to your groin, letting your knees splay out into a diamond shape. Direct your hands towards your feet or ankles (depending on your flexibility). Be comfortable in this position and avoid rounding the lower back. Inhale and lengthen the spine. Exhale and bend forward from the hips, keeping your spine as straight as possible. Breathe in slowly, and ease into the stretch with every exhale. Feel your muscles relaxing and lengthening. TIP: Listen to your body and ease into the pose. Sitting on a blanket or pillow will help tight muscles open up. 3. SUPTA MATSYENDRASANA (RECLINED SPINAL SWIST) Re-align yourself by lying with your back on the floor and bringing both knees to the chest. Extend your left arm to the left side at shoulder height, with the palm facing up. With your knees still at your chest, slowly push both to the right with your right hand, until they reach the floor. Leave your right hand on top of the knee and gaze at your left hand. With every exhale, use the right hand to stroke the outer left leg from the hip to the knee. This will help deepen the stretch and align your spine. Hold for three to five breaths. Repeat on the other side. TIP: Listen to your body and ease into the pose. Sitting on a blanket or pillow will help tight muscles open up. 4. JATHARA PARIVARTANASANA (THREAD-THE-NEEDLE) Lie flat on your back, placing your feet on the floor with your knees bent. Bring your right knee towards your chest, placing the right ankle on top of the left knee. Let the right knee flop to the right. Flex your right foot to keep the muscles engaged. Interlace your hands behind the left knee and lift your foot off the floor, bringing the knee towards the chest. You should feel a stretch on the outside of your right butt cheek. Breathe deeply and slowly focus on keeping both hips in line with each other. Hold for three to five breaths. Repeat on the other side. 5. VIPARITA KARANI (LEGS-UP-THE-WALL POSE) Put your butt as close to the wall as possible. Extend your legs straight up the wall, bringing your toes down so they are pointing towards the knees. This allows blood to flow to the heart, which soothes and releases stress. *Flop your arms open along your sides, with your palms facing up. You may also extend them behind your head to open your chest and release pent-up emotions. *Close your eyes and breathe as you relax into the pose and clear your mind. Feel the cold air entering and the warm air exiting the body with every breath. TIP: Place a pillow underneath your lower back for support. Bring the buttocks further away from the wall to relieve tight hamstrings. Once you have finished this routine, go to bed straight away and keep your calm disposition intact.

Immunity ESTATE NEWS HEALTH
BUILDING tips During autumn, it is always wise to look at extra ways to boost our immune systems before the “cold and flu” season arrives in winter. Due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, immune building is even more pressing. A strong immune system can not prevent us from contracting the virus, but it could assist us with recovery. Boosting an immune system isn’t a quick fix unfortunately, because it isn’t one thing. It is an entire system that needs to work together in balance and harmony.
What can you do?
1.Eat well. Make sure you eat balanced meals. It is essential to consume your five-a-day (fresh fruits and veggies) as these will provide you with the necessary vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, Magnesium, Fibre, Iron, Zinc, B Vitamins, Folate, Vitamin A, Selenium and Glutathione (to highlight a few) your body needs to fight inflammation, produce white blood cells and generally help you keep your body “fighting fit”. Try eating various colours of fruits and vegetables. Some of the great ones to include in your diet is spinach, broccoli, oranges, red peppers, garlic, bananas, ginger, sweet potato etc. Fermented and pre- and probiotic foods are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of gut flora. Include kefir, miso, kimchi and yoghurt into your daily diet where possible. Did you know? Vitamin C is water soluble, which means your body doesn’t store any of it. That is why it is essential to maintain adequate levels every day.

All of these are beneficial to creating a body that is in balance and harmony, which means it will be beneficial to your immune system.
Eating well and exercising regularly have direct and positive effects on our sleep patterns. This goes to show how building a strong immune system is a marathon and not a sprint. Every small lifestyle choice has an effect on the greater whole.

FIVE TIPS TO TURNING YOUR BEDROOM INTO A NONTOXIC HAVEN
Organic Natural Bedding Bedding such as sheets, duvets, throws and pillows made from organic natural fibres such as bamboo, Tencel ® , wool, cotton, buckwheat, silk, hemp etc. might cost you more but they will last longer and won’t release any toxins in the room. The natural tones and textures of organic natural fibres blend together beautifully, creating a pleasant tranquil space for all your senses to enjoy. Look out for eco-labels and certifications.
When we decorate, the tiny details of a bedroom are often overlooked. Which makes sense because we are literally asleep most of the time and don’t mentally connect with our surroundings all that well. We select pretty, comfortable bedding and eye-catching decor pieces and believe our work is done. But what we don’t see are all the toxic fumes we breathe in at night...
Take on a Minimalistic or Vintage Decor Approach The shift toward leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle is something that should directly affect our day to day purchases. Think about it, every decor item you have ever bought is still on this planet somewhere...Taking on a minimalistic approach to decor is definitely a good idea because minimalists invest in fewer pieces but opt for better quality, artisan or hand-made items that are built to last. Another route that is also effective is to recycle, re-use and reupholster old, vintage pieces to give them new life.
Use Natural Air Purifying & Essential Oils Use nature’s air purifying plants like Peace Lilies and Snake Plants (Mother-in-law’s Tongue) to filter the air in your bedroom naturally. WORLD SIGHT DAY 2019 World sight day 2019 was dedicated to Myopia (short-sightedness), and the reason for that is because Myopia is seen as the epidemic of the modern world. When we spend so much time in front of near devices, our distance vision becomes worse. By 2050, the World Health Organization predicts that half of the world’s population will be shortsighted. I want to know how I can protect my children against Myopia, and therefore I went to Elsabe de Koker with a couple of questions. Elsabe dedicates her time to myopia control, pediatric vision and binocular vision. She owns a practice in Centurion, and did various courses on pediatric and binocular vision after she finished her degree in Optometry at the University of Johannesburg in 2005. “Our lifestyle is having a huge impact on developing eyes. A prevalence study done on 19-year-old South Korean males in 2010 showed 96.5% had Myopia, and high myopia increases the risk of ocular complications such as Glaucoma, Cataracts, Retinal Detachment and Atrophy.”
HEALTH ESTATE & WELLNESS NEWS
A very interesting fact that Elsabe mentioned was that single vision lenses, especially for the young, causes Myopia to increase by 30%. Gone are the days when multifocal lenses were only used for the elderly. Now they are being used for various reasons, one being to control Progressive Myopia. Elsabe partners with Essilor, a world leader in the optical industry to prescribe the best possible solutions for her pasients’ visual needs. “I make use of the Myopilux multifocal for young children, I find that it slows down the rate of Myopia progression. It is also aesthetically one of the better options because no child wants to look like he is wearing multifocals. It looks like a normal pair of single vision lenses, but does the trick.” At home, Elsabe is a wife and a mother of a lovely 2 year old girl.
If your child experiences difficulty seeing far, you can contact Elsabe de Koker Optometrist at (012) 685 5600. Issue 2 | 2 0 2 0 | V illa ge Cri er 29

Risk factors for becoming short-sighted:
Things to do to try and limit Myopia progression:
Not spending enough time outdoors Spending too much time on near activities. Cell phone and tablet overuse in children. One or more parents that are short-sighted Holding a book or digital screen too close to your eyes for extended periods (<30cm) are 2.5 times more likely to be myopic than those with longer working distances, suggesting that the intensity as well as duration of near work may be factors associated with Myopia development. 6. Children who read continuously for more than 30 minutes are reportedly more likely to develop Myopia than those who read for shorter periods
1. Spend 2-3 hours on outdoor activities daily 2. Every 20 minutes of near activity take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet (6 metres) away. 3. Do near activity at 40cm or Harmon distance (distance between the elbow and the middle knuckle) not closer 4. Invest in healthy food. 5. Test every 6 months 6. Certain glasses and contact lenses can assist

Camp in the Park Our Camp in the Park still remains a popular event! We had lovely rain the night before, which cooled down the earth. What a fantastic opportunity to be able to camp and feel safe! Nothing like pitching a tent, lighting a campfire and melted marshmallows to get our kids (and parents) excited! Even residents who didn’t camp joined their friends for a braai and social gathering. At sunrise, cappuccinos and a variety of muffins were enjoyed by everyone — a true reminder of how privileged we are living in an Estate like this. Get your camping gear ready for our next Camp in the Park, Friday 10 October. Please also look out for updates on your Heritage Hill App for this event.
