We had fun and many admirable projects were finalised – to name a few:

FROM THE

ESTATE MANAGER 4

2017 has been another exceptionally blessed year in Heritage Hill for which we are very grateful.

• Park 8 in Fountain View Lane and Road islands were all upgraded and replanted. • Road Resurfacing throughout the Estate; • Monthly outreach to Hanna Charity & the Knysna Residents in May; • Three galvanized water tanks were installed in the Lemon Orchard for water harvesting and irrigation of nearby parks. • Security camera upgrade with Thermal camera and Analytics were installed around our perimeter fence for added security. • “Market in the Village” donation of R12500.00 to CANSA; and • lastly, and probably one of our biggest achievements this year, the finalising of the installation of our ring feed cable, then Tshwane installed the two new cables at our entrance and we were under the impression this was now our ring feed just to later discover we still needed an internal installation that would finalise this project. This was finally done and we can now without doubt say we have a ring feed network, we are currently being fed from the Nellmapius substation together with Denel, we see this as the more stable supply as there is a great deal of work taking place at the Kosmosdal substation resulting in frequent power interruptions. Should we experience any electrical breakdown we can switch over to the Kosmosdal feeder in relatively short time, this will be done by Quebec and not Tshwane.

We would like to thank the construction company Quebec for this momentous task, which they performed very swiftly and professionally.

We wish you all a very meaningful Festive Season and hope that wherever your travels may take you, that you will return safely. Kind regards

Fred Botes

COMMUNITY PROJECT

Heritage Hill Estate proudly supports the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation every month by collecting various items that are desperately needed by the several children that have been placed under foster care at their Head Office, as well as 8000 other individuals from disadvantaged communities who are supported through the foundation.

7

Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation supports communities with all the basic services such as playgroups, soup kitchens, skills development, job creation, clothing banks, social and psychological support, libraries etc. They receive no support from the Government. Their primary means of support comes from individual sponsors and companies.

COMMUNITY PROJECT

We invite and encourage all Heritage Hill residents to get involved in our on-going efforts to help and support this foundation and to ultimately make a difference in the world.

8

As the end of another year approaches, it is tough to have to be reminded of all the atrocities and injustices that take place every day against fellow human beings. It seems as though the world has gone mad!

But there is hope… we CAN be the change we wish to see in the world. We CAN make a difference! To the people in our communities who have nothing, every little bit really does help.

So, friends reach deep… clear out your clutter… add ONE item to your list on your next shopping run… That is all it takes! And we’ve made it even easier… you can simply leave your donation in the containers at the booms of our Estate and we will ensure that it gets taken directly to the foundation every time.

Kids serving Kids Heritage Hill children are also encouraged to participate in our Kids Christmas Market on 1 December. All the stall fees will be donated to the Hanna Foundation. There will also be a Hanna table setup at the market, for

our children to donate a toy, clothes etc. or a Christmas gift for the children of the Hanna Foundation. For more information please contact Elsa. “BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD.” – Ghandi

We officially launched the network in July 2016 with a great fanfare at the Candlewoods Boutique Venue. Jak de Priester entertained us as the Master of Ceremonies and with his poetrylike songs, Anel Botha Couture and Werner Day Couture showcased their world-class haute couture designs and Leza Liversage blessed us with her soulful music.

Since the launch, we have supported the elderly in need in Centurion and Olievenhoutsbosch areas and the annual Heritage Hill “soup and blanket” drive and we had a wellness evening with Dr Liana van Dyk as our guest speaker. We also hosted the Cara Ladies Event in October 2017 with the support of amazing sponsors which we cannot go without. Marinda Aucamp from Barefoot in Burgundy reminded us of the more important things in life, educated us in fashion styles and we enjoyed a relaxed Saturday afternoon akin to a French fete. The organizing committee has grown to 9 ladies living in Heritage Hill, Candlewoods Estate and Midstream Estates, and we will need further support from whoever wants to be part of the journey. We are dreaming big and are planning exciting events which will include an opportunity for men to be involved too. We are excited to see dreams turning into reality in 2018!

Fun and laughter at the annual Sports Day by Fernand de Beer

13

On the sunny, spring afternoon of 14 October sounds of fun and laughter resounded from our lovely Rose Garden. The day of the annual Heritage Hill Sports Day event, organised by Silverline Fitness (Daphne and her competent team), had finally arrived and the air was thick with anticipation. All the well known, old-worldly games gave us a chance to stretch some muscle, show off our skills and in some cases even our cunning sides!

ESTATE EVENTS

The bag race gave young and old a chance to warm up a bit. Thereafter a spoon-and-egg race took place, where even balancing the egg on the spoon was a real challenge for some. The three-legged race provided an opportunity to show teamwork abilities. The running in this event was spectacular.

14

The highlight of the day was the tug-of-war event. It started off with a warm-up round between the girls and the boys. It soon became evident that the girls were outdoing the boys. The dads lent the boys a hand. They even tied the rope around a tree to prevent the girls from winning! During the last round of tug-of-war the bo-dorp competed against the onderdorp. The bo-dorp walked away as champions this year. Congratulations to them! Folk dancing gave everyone a chance to display their musical talents and to cool down slightly. The day brought people together and reminded us of the importance of having fun as a community. We are already looking forward to next year’s event. I leave you with the wise words of Michael Jordan: “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.”

Sweet As a Christmas Cookie Bronwen Crew

This time of the year can be completely crazy and in a way, one can almost miss out on the true essence of the festive season and what makes it so special. My kitchen is where I centre myself! I have the fondest memories of growing up in a large family and vividly recall spending time with my mom in the kitchen, baking all kinds of different biscuits as a little girl.

our family for years and years!

Super Simple Sugar Cookies Ingredients 2½ cups all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (225g) 1 cup sugar 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Step 1 Whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar; mix until light and fluffy. With mixer running, add egg and vanilla; mix until well combined. With the mixer on low, slowly add flour mixture. Mix until just combined. Do not overwork. Step 2 Transfer dough to a work surface. Shape into 2 discs, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Step 3 Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Line baking sheets with baking paper; set aside. Step 4 On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough to ½ cm thickness. Cut into desired shapes, using cookie cutters and transfer to prepared baking sheets, leaving 2½ cm gap between them. (If you don’t want the cookies to spread too much, place them in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before baking.) Leftover dough can be rolled and cut once more. Bake until very lightly golden, about 6 8 minutes; do not allow to brown. Transfer to wire racks to cool. Step 5 Decorate as desired, with Royal Icing or simply dust with icing sugar. To make unique Christmas Tree Ornaments, simply punch a hole through the cookie (using a straw) before baking and once baked, thread a ribbon or colourful string through the hole and hang it on your Christmas Tree. fb. www.facebook.com/ petiteeatsza

RECIPE

There is nothing like the smell of Christmas baking! Mom taught me how to bake. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same for me, without oat crunchies, shortbread, decorated sugar cookies, ginger biscuits and ginger bread men and homemade mince pies. We never spent a lot of money on gifts in those days… a tin of homemade biscuits would be more than appreciated by neighbours, teachers, family and friends. Mom always made sure that there was plenty leftover, to last her four children all through the long holiday. Today my daughter and I carry on this tradition during the festive season and thoroughly enjoy spending hours in the kitchen baking for loved ones and filling our own cookie jar. This recipe has become a staple in our home and we often host baking days with cousins and friends and while the moms eagerly spectate - the kids have the wildest fun, decorating their own biscuits. It is such an easy and inexpensive holiday activity to do with your children, which will create the most special and lasting memories. The Christmas holidays equals Family, Festive and Fun in our home and I hope that this recipe brings you and your little ones as much joy, as it has done in

Who is looking after “Fluffy” this holiday?

ESTATE NEWS

The holidays are literally around the corner, which means sun, sea and sand for many Gautengers. When it comes to living in The Village, however, going on holiday isn’t as simple as just lock-up-andgo. Many of us have luscious gardens and adorable pets that would need minding while we are away. Please don’t leave organising a pet-sitter or your pet’s place in a kennel until the last minute as spaces fill up extremely quickly this time of the year.

18

Your pets have been good to you in 2017 and deserve to have a great Christmas too. Plus, they will be devastated without you and the kids to play with during the day. Be sure to keep this, and the fact that December is one of the highest rainfall months of the year, in mind when deciding what to do with your pets when you are away.

Who doesn’t love a few scatters on a couch or bed? If your home boasts many on the couch it reveals that comfort is an important goal and you want your guests to linger when visiting. Scatters with bold stripes say that you are confident; polka dots indicate your fun side, while animal prints suggest that you are creative and geometric designs that you have a need to be in control.

3. Motivational posters/stickers

Do you have motivational stickers, posters or wall hangings? If so it could reveal your inner anxiety and neuroticism in life. Surrounding yourself with inspirational quotes help you get through the day, psychologists believe.

4. Seating for many

A home that over caters when it comes to space and seating in the living room,

5. Bare counters

Even though the toaster and other appliances are used daily you won’t find it on a Type A person’s counter. A home with bare counters suggests that appearance is more important than practicality.

6. Colour choices

A home that favours bright yellows and orange tones reveal your optimism in life, while blues and greens show you have a laid back personality and jewel hues such as emerald and purples reflect your creative side. If you prefer neutrals in your home you are probably a peacemaker.

The kitchen is perhaps the room in the house that gets the most traffic, which makes the fridge the most used appliance in your home. Camp Night by Elandre van Tonder

ESTATE EVENTS

Following the first Dad and Kids Camp earlier this year, which was greatly enjoyed by all. Now with summer here, it was time for another.

24

So, on 3 November, the Heritage Hill dads, a few moms and their kiddies filled the Rose Garden with tents and camping gear, to enjoy another night under the stars. The kids enjoyed running around and playing while the dads dealt with the challenge of setting up their tents. Thank you to the organisers for the fires, on which we cooked our dinner as well as dessert - after all, what is a camp without roasted marshmallows! Kids ran around till late with marshmallows and glow sticks - an awesome sight, while the dads got to catch up with each other around the campfires. What a great opportunity for our city kids to run free and play hide and seek till eleven at night. Mums were certainly grateful for a night off. After a good night’s sleep - some less than others - we all enjoyed some hot coffee and rusks together, before setting off for the usual Saturday duties - with our somewhat exhausted, but happy kids. We are looking forward to many more in the nearby future!

Under the expert and entertaining guidance of Nico Davel from Beyerskloof, our noses and pallets where transported from a village in the city, to the beautiful Cape Winelands. And what is a road trip without padkos? Bronwen from Petite Eats didn’t fail to impress with delicious gourmet canapés and speciality eats, which made our journey an unforgettable one. This well-planned and perfectly executed evening catered for everything from foodies, to the sophisticated wine connoisseurs, to avid social wine drinkers keen to broaden their horizons and appreciate new experiences.

True to Heritage Hill culture, no measures of divide existed at this festive event, as residents united in their love for good food and wine. Friendly smiles and lively by D'Shorne Human chatter filled the spring night air and inadvertently made me think of Benjamin Michael Broadbent (British wine critic) said: “Drink- Franklin’s statement: “Wine is constant ing good wine with good food in good company is proof that God loves us and wants to see one of life’s most civilised pleasures.” At Heritage Hill’s first wine and food pairing evening, these three us happy”. elements combined perfectly; much to the delight of everyone present.

Sensory Integration

32

Do you know me? I cover my eyes when there is a bright light I have selective hearing or difficulty listening I am a picky eater; I resist new food and textures I often touch others too hard or too soft I complain about tags in my clothing I have poor gross motor skills such as running and riding a bike I always walk on my tiptoes

I am sensitive to loud sounds such as vacuums or blenders I chew on everything I have poor fine motor skills such as writing and cutting I have difficulty dressing myself I sit with my legs in a “W” position I never go barefoot I don’t like swinging or moving objects

Sensory integration is the brain’s ability to sort, match and sift sensory information we receive from all our sensory systems in order to send out signals to the rest of our body to help us successfully navigate and participate in our world. When occupational therapists talk about sensory integration we are referencing seven sensory systems. Oh yes, we have seven! There are two “hidden” sensory systems - vestibular/movement and proprioception. The tactile, visual, auditory, gustatory and olfactory are our well know five. When these systems work together we are able to activate the appropriate motor, behaviour

or emotional responses. When these systems have difficulty communicating/integrating, then daily activities can become difficult which could influences behaviour, learning and development. Some children are over-responsive to sensory information; their nervous system feels the sensation too intensely. These friends become overwhelmed and try to avoid the sensation - this is referred to as sensory defensiveness or sensory avoiding. Other children may not always respond to the sensory information that they experience. They may seek more intense stimulation in order to make sense of the sensory input - this is referred to as sensory seeking behaviour.

Remember; no two children are affected the same way. (Adapted from an article by Francois Harrison and information obtained from SAISI, MamaOT and Therapy Factory)

How to reduce your

The drought and peculiar weather we are experiencing in South Africa is perhaps reason enough to try and reduce your impact on the environment.

However, for some real inspiration as to why it is important for us to change the way we think about global warming, visit the Before the Flood website and watch Leonardo Di Caprio’s documentary.

Making eco-friendly adjustments in your lifestyle isn’t as easy as it may sound because unlike most New Year Resolutions, this is one that has to last. Where should you even begin? In changing too much too quickly you might run the risk of many of the changes phasing out as the months go by. If you don’t know where to start, follow our Action Plan. In this edition of the newsletter we look at Steps 1-3 you can implement. In the few upcoming additions we will add steps to the list so that you have time to make it part of your (and your family’s) lifestyle before including more changes.

Step 1: Drastically reduce water usage. Yes, we are perhaps tired of hearing this but even though Gauteng receives more rain than other areas, South Africa is still a water-scarce country. Plus, by reducing the amount of water you are using you are reducing your carbon footprint, as less water needs to be handled as a result. In other words, in mastering this step it will have double the amount of benefits. • Use grey water in the garden and/or install a rainwater tank. • Flush the toilets less often (“if it’s yellow, let it mellow” idea). • Brush your teeth with a cup of water instead of running the tap. • Time your showers and keep them under 5 minutes or run a narrow bath in which more than one person in your family bathes. • Wash clothing less (inspect every item before just washing it) and wait for a full load before running a quick wash. • Use waterless hand sanitiser instead of washing hands.

Step 2: Work from home once a week/carpool/public transport Talk to your manager and try to arrange to work from home one day of the week. According to research done by American company TelCoa, 272-million litres of fuel could be saved annually if 32-million people worked from home once a week. It is a saving of 423,000 tons of greenhouse gas. In other research compiled by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), telecommunication will also save 9 to 14 billion

kilowatt-hours of energy every year. In a study where 3,609 people started working from home full-time, 9,600 tons of carbon emissions were prevented. It isn’t doable for everyone to telecommute. So if it is out of the question in your industry try to carpool with someone to work. Also: • try to reduce the amount of trips you take with the car in general; • avoid traffic; • don’t speed; • check tyre pressure regularly; and • ensure that your car is serviced when needed.

Step 3: Enjoy Meat-free Mondays (or any other day/s of the week) Did you know that by eating less meat and dairy you can help the environment? It is because the industrial raising of livestock requires large pieces of land (and water) making it an industry that generates as much greenhouse gases as the entire automobile industry. A diet that consists of large amounts of meat (including chicken and fish) and dairy is contributing towards pollution (soil, air, water) as well as ocean dead zones. • Shop organic/sustainable meat, fish and dairy. • Shop local.

Good luck following the Action Plan. In the next Heritage Hill edition we will share the next step in the Plan.

“Bringing to life vivid images of the beauty, mystery and force of Africa”

While I have always been inspired and driven by the stories and faces of the African people, my interpretation and expression of that has consistently grown more assertive. Raised in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, I have been greatly influenced by my own diverse heritage, and the steep, rich culture of my country, and Africa as a whole. I consider myself a storyteller of sorts, bringing to life vivid images of the beauty, mystery and force of Africa. I have participated in various successful group and solo exhibitions, local and international, throughout the years, and I am always drawn to projects that involve and impact the communities around me. I have also enjoyed various commission projects from both private and corporate collectors.

My latest work was inspired by the recent overwhelming news about femicide, and every day abuse of women in this country. I felt a need to portray a strong, beautiful and joyful woman, to contrast the pain and deep struggle that so many women deal with. The piece is happy, yet it carries such an intense emotion behind it. It is a piece about overcoming, and triumphing over life’s dips and bends. Which mediums do you prefer to work with? I started out working in charcoal and pastels, and now enjoy flowing

I began my career as a self-taught contemporary artist over a decade ago. I discovered my talent “by chance” when I started selling hand painted T-shirts and other merchandise, just to make some kind of living. I have always drawn, from an early age, so I knew I had some talent.

Tell us a bit more about your most recent painting, the African portrait of woman in red? What inspired it?

mediums like oils and acrylic, which allow for spontaneous and expressive palette and brush application, which I prefer. What keeps inspiring you to continue with your work?

LIFESTYLE DÉCOR

Passion, and the satisfaction I get when I have just completed a piece. I get to create something out of nothing, and in the end, in front of me is a piece that carries a part of me – something that other people can be a part of, enjoy, and find their own expression in. I love the dialogue that comes from my art. I love seeing and interacting with people enjoying my art, but mostly, it’s a sense

of wonder at what my mind can conjure up one moment, and my hands turn into something the next. It is wonderful to think that every piece I create will far outlive me. Can you tell us about your studio, where do you like to work and what helps you to focus? I have converted my garage into a working studio. I enjoy it because, depending on my mood, it allows me some flexibility. Some days I close it up and work in solitude, with nothing but the sound of my breath and some music in the background. But I am rather unusual as an artist in that I mostly

love to work with the door open, facing the street. I enjoy the interactions and reactions of people as they walk or drive by. I draw a lot of energy from people and the buzz of life happening around me. How did you evolve since the beginning of your career? I think I have become less concerned about what people think of my art, or who I should be as an artist, and I have insisted on my freedom to create whatever wants to come out. I trust myself more, and it shows in my work. I started out as a “survivalist artist”, so I painted what I thought would sell. Since

I am still inspired by the same things and so there hasn’t been much change in my subject matters of choice, but I’ve grown through different techniques and applications of my gift. A lot of your work mainly focuses on African portraits and scenes? What continues to draw you to this subject, what inspires you about Africa? Africa for me is layered beauty. I have always been fascinated by the strength and beauty of African women and children. As you know, this very same beautiful continent also continues to be one of the harshest environments for women and children in which to thrive. How long does it typically take you to finish a piece? That really just depends on the day. Sometimes I get woken up with a clear picture of what I want to paint,

and I sit on that painting for a solid 10 hours until it is finished. Often my wife has to force me to take a break to eat something. Other times, which is most of the time, I work on three or four paintings at a time. It then takes me weeks, or sometime even months, to finish a painting. What do you do for fun, outside the studio? I love watching movies and series. I also really enjoy playing with my three children, and spending some quality time with my wife and muse. What exciting projects do you have on the horizon? Well, I’m about to open my own gallery (Yonaka Art Studios), which I am very excited about! As much as I’m an artist, I also really enjoy art in general, and am looking forward to working with other artists, and enjoy their art in my space. I absolutely love interacting with people, so having my own gallery again has been on the cards for some time.

We were just waiting to find the right space and I think we have. We will be opening our gallery at Graskop Gorge Lift Company in Graskop, Mpumalanga. It is a new tourist attraction, which boasts a 51-metre glass lift that will go down into the thick, lush ravine and waterfall below. It’s a stunning site that will attract many local and international tourists, in my home province. Heaven! We open on the 15th of December, so come check us out! How do potential buyers get hold of you and do you have a down payment option available? Clients can reach me on social media. On Facebook and Instagram @tshidzoart. They can also email me at tshidzoart@gmail.com, or call directly on 073 564 1214 or 0823 740 740. Some of the bigger works can be quite hefty on the pocket, so we are always open to negotiate payment terms that suit our clients.

then my works have become more reflective of who Tshidzo is today. I play and experiment more.
