Garden Feng Shui Article by Elize Malan

Feng shui means “ the way of wind a n d w a t e r.” I t s t e m s f r o m t h e Ta o i s t b e l i e f, t h a t a i m s t o c r e a t e a harmonious environment by b a l a n c i n g t h e f l o w o f e n e r g y, o r “ c h i ,” i n a s p a c e . When designing a garden according to Feng shui principles the bagua map or energy map is used. This divides the garden in nine life areas. Originally designed for use in the northern hemisphere the map has to be turned around for South African use (North will become South). The first step in Garden Feng Shui is to understand the five elements: Fire, wood, water, earth, and metal. These elements work together to create a balanced outdoor space. For example, fire brings energy, wood represents growth, water calms and cleanses, earth stands for stability, and metal encourages clarity. Fire: Garden lights installed along hedges or peeking out of the space between plants, can be solar or battery operated. A fire pit with surrounding seats and plants creates an inviting ambience.

DEC EMB E R 2023

Wood: When garden trees are still small, an arbor or wooden garden bench at the end of a pathway will represent the element. Water: There is no need for a splashing fountain or large koi pond. A small birdbath or a bubbling millstone water feature will have the same benefits. Earth: Properties with natural large rocks or boulders are ideal. A separate Zen Garden made up of rocks, gravel, sand and no water are a low maintenance solution.

Metal: Wind chimes are available in all shapes and sizes. A water feature can be made of metal and even a garden wall painted grey will bring the energy of metal into a space.

The above ideas should not be used randomly. Done according to feng shui principles with restraint in mind and pathways to create a flow from one area to another a feeling of positive energy is created. Feng shui designs are well-suited to modern minimalistic architecture where every small detail is important, starting with the view from each window. Shadows cast by trees or shrubs during different times of the day or different seasons are all considered part of the complete picture. No visible clutter. Everything should have a purpose and place. Colour plants are important. Use warm reds and yellow where energy is needed and the soothing effect of blue, white and purple for relaxation areas. Negative feelings about a plant or tree should not be ignored. Remove the plant. Thorns and spikes on plants are sometimes regarded as draining to good chi.

Keep an open mind: Feng shui depends o n h o w Yo u feel about it. There is currently no scientific evidence to support that following Feng Shui will have any drastic effect on you as a person, but very wealthy influential people such as Bill gates, Richard Branson and Christian Dior use the principles of Feng shui in their homes and business environment. Love Your Liver: A Holiday Season Checklist for Liver Health As the holiday season approaches, filled with festive celebrations and indulgent meals, it’s essential to remember the unsung hero of our bodies – the liver. The liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying the body, processing nutrients, and maintaining overall well-being. This festive season, let’s show our liver some love by adopting a checklist of habits that promote liver health. 1. Hydrate with Purpose: Beyond the act of drinking water, infuse your hydration routine with purpose. Sip on herbal teas known for their liverloving properties, such as dandelion tea. These beverages not only quench your thirst but also support the liver’s natural detox processes.

DEC EMB E R 2023

2. Sleep as a Healing: Consider sleep not merely as a restful interlude but as a profound healing ritual for your liver. Retire to bed by 10 pm to provide your body with ample time for the liver to engage in its nocturnal ‘digest and detox’ performance. 3. Emotional Liberation: Acknowledge the intricate link between emotional well-being and liver health. Establish practices that allow for the full expression and release of emotions. Whether through talk therapy or the ancient qigong technique of ‘beating the pillow,’ prioritize emotional liberation. 4. Verdant Nutrition: Elevate your nutritional choices by incorporating a spectrum of dark, leafy greens. Dive into the

goodness of cruciferous vegetables, dandelion greens, and cilantro, harnessing the livercleansing power of these nutrient-rich options. 5. Embrace the Tang: Invite the tangy notes of sour foods into your diet, a gesture appreciated by Traditional Chinese Medicine. A daily glass of room temperature lemon water can act as a refreshing tonic for your liver, offering a zesty twist to your routine. 6. Fiber Fortification: Enrich your diet with fiber, a steadfast ally in supporting your liver’s detox efforts. Two tablespoons of ground flax daily can promote regular bowel movements, aiding in the efficient cleansing of a potentially toxic liver.

W E L L NE S S

7. Minimize Toxins: Pledge to minimize your exposure to artificial chemicals by opting for organic alternatives in your food, personal care products, and household solutions. This proactive step is integral to facilitating your liver’s toxin-processing capabilities. 8. Artful Moderation: When indulging in life’s pleasures, including caffeine and alcohol, choose organic options and practice moderation. This mindful approach prevents unnecessary strain on the liver, ensuring it functions optimally. 9. Perspire for Wellness: Activate your lymphatic system by encouraging

perspiration through activities like sauna sessions, hot yoga, or invigorating cardio workouts. Sweating is not just a physical release but a detoxifying embrace for your liver. 10. Brushing for Renewal: Integrate the therapeutic ritual of dry brushing into your self-care routine. Gently glide a naturalbristle brush over your skin before showering, stimulating the lymphatic system and promoting holistic detoxification. 11. Mindful Breathing Exercises: Incorporate mindful breathing exercises into your daily routine. Practices like deep diaphragmatic breathing or pranayama can enhance oxygen flow

13

to the liver, promoting a sense of calm and aiding in detoxification. 12. Liver-Friendly Herbs and Supplements: Explore natural herbs and supplements known for their liver-supporting properties. Milk thistle, turmeric, and artichoke extract are examples of supplements that can assist in liver detoxification.

However, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before adding any new supplements to your routine.

Making a difference,

It’s been an incredible few weeks. So much has happened and changed in our community, for the better. RUBBISH BLITZ It started with a refuse drive end October. The recent COT strikes resulted in rubbish piling up all over Louwlardia. Thanks to a bunch of volunteers, some bakkies and some hands, we managed to pick up all the refuse bags in the greater area. Three X 6 cube bins were filled and then more were ordered, there was just so much rubbish. Specific thanks again to the following: • Pikas Pets Grooming Boutique – for your truck and amazing team • Piet @ Oasis Midstream – for supplying water to everyone on the day, it was blistering hot • Motorradical – for sponsoring the initial set of Skip Bins • And, to all the individuals that pitched in on the day DEC EMB E R 2023

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Concerns Heritage Hill received notification of a significant development, and we wish to alert residents to the following: Cedar Lakes Lifestyle Estate is currently facing a significant impact from Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease.

rabbits. If you suspect that your rabbit has contracted RHD or if there is an outbreak in your area, it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care and isolate affected rabbits to prevent the spread of the disease. Additionally, vaccination can be an effective preventive measure in regions where RHD is a concern.

In an unforeseen twist, Ceder Lakes Lifestyle estate is confronted with a pressing issue that has sparked apprehension within the community: the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV). Although this virus is typically linked to wild rabbits, recent incidents have brought the threat closer to their doorstep. The ensuing details provide insight into the recent RHDV cases within their estate and elaborate on the implications for the local rabbit population and pet owners.

Managing Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) within Cedar Lakes will be challenging, but there are several strategies we can consider to control the disease-:

How long does it take for a rabbit to die once it contracts Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD)? The time it takes for a rabbit to die after contracting Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) can vary. In some cases, death can occur very rapidly, within hours or even minutes of the onset of symptoms. This is more common in the acute form of the disease. In other cases, the disease may progress more slowly, with symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, and fever appearing before a rabbit’s health deteriorates further. In such cases, death may occur within a day or a few days. It’s essential to understand that RHD is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease for

DEC EMB E R 2023

How we intend to manage Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease within Cedar Lakes

Biosecurity Measures Implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of infected rabbits into the Estate. Control access to the Estate and ensure visitors do not bring rabbits or rabbit-related equipment onto the Estate, or their properties. Monitoring and Surveillance Regularly monitor the rabbit population for signs of RHD, such as sudden deaths or lethargy. Report any suspected cases to local veterinary authorities for diagnosis and confirmation; all cases are to be reported to CLHOA, who is in constant contact with the State Veterinary Service under Dr Mpofu. Dr Mpofu sent a team to Cedar Lakes this to take tissue samples from a Hare that died on Sunday; we expect the pathology results today,

E STAT E NEWS

confirming RHD. However, a rabbit was also discovered this afternoon, showing the tell-tale signs of RHD (typically bleeding from the eyes and mouth or nose). Vaccination We are rolling out a vaccination program and consulted with a veterinarian about vaccinating the rabbit population against RHD. Thus far, five rabbits have been vaccinated, however, all rabbits within the Estate need to be vaccinated. It is recommended that residents with pet rabbits take them to Bryanston Avian Clinic to get vaccinated urgently. The cost will be R690, which can be paid at the Vet. You can do it the same day, as vaccinations happen in your car outside and take about 30 seconds per rabbit, and the animals will not be allowed into the clinic. Vaccination may help protect rabbits from the disease, but it might not be suitable for Hare’s. Quarantine and Isolation

23

Implement measures to keep rabbits confined within the Estate to reduce the risk of infection. Handling and Removal of Dead Rabbits Please DO NOT remove or touch a rabbit or Hare if found dead or paralysed. Contact the Estate Security or the CLHOA office to state the animal’s location so it can be collected and disposed of correctly. Education and Awareness Educate estate residents and visitors about the risks of RHD and the importance of following biosecurity measures. Encourage responsible pet ownership to prevent the release of domestic rabbits into the Estate. Consult with Experts We work with local veterinary authorities, wildlife experts, and disease control agencies for guidance and support.

Isolate any sick or potentially infected rabbits to prevent the spread of the disease. Quarantine vaccinated and any new rabbits brought onto the Estate to ensure they are free from RHD. A quarantine/isolation area is being set up at the HOA offices in the courtyard area. We kindly call on all residents who may have cages or boxes suitable for housing the rabbits to please drop them off at the office. These will be used to transport the rabbits to and from the vet. Please label it with your details so it can be returned. Pest Control Control pests like flies and mosquitoes, which can transmit the RHD virus. Minimise handling and feeding of rabbits in the Estate to reduce infection rates. D E C E MBER 2023

RAINY CHEERS AND RUGBY VICTORIES A MEMORABLE EVENING IN THE ROSE GARDEN - 28 OCTOBER 2023

Michael Jordan once said, “Being nervous isn’t bad. It just means something important is happening.” This was probably a feeling most South Africans experienced that Saturday. No rain was forecasted, and it promised a beautiful evening outdoors. We looked forward to an evening in our Rose Garden again. The giant LED Screen from Extreme Productions was set in the early afternoon, and some of the braais were already lit at 15:30. Residents came to put their chairs and tables out in preparation for the big game. We saw the dark clouds coming in from the south but were hoping it would pass us and return after the game around midnight…until a call came through just after 17:00 to say it was pouring down in Midrand.

The rain came down about 15 minutes later. We were grateful that it was a soft rain; the IT system at the back of the screen and speakers were easy to protect, and there was no need to pack up. Around 20:00, most residents who indicated they would like to watch the game in the Rose Garden returned. It was a nail-biter game, and yes, our Springboks had lots of favour and won their fourth Rugby World Cup title. As a resident said, you don’t win against New Zealand; you only have more points on the scoreboard. We were grateful for that one point!

The new GLC Coupé: A contemporary masterpiece with a dynamic design for a progressive lifestyle.

Stylish design and dynamic driving pleasure: where the new GLC Coupé comes into its own. As the sporty sibling of the GLC SUV, it rounds off the best-selling MercedesBenz series of vehicles. The first impression, before the GLC Coupé even starts: elegance, dynamism and offroad adventure. Striking proportions, dramatic surfaces and precisely moulded edges define an unmistakeable look, complemented by a clearly laid-out, high-quality interior. The GLC Coupé combines sporty performance with high efficiency. The defining feature of the new GLC Coupé is its sporty silhouette. It is immediately recognisable as a member of the MercedesBenz SUV family. Standard equipment includes the AVANTGARDE exterior with 18‑inch light alloy wheels and the chrome package.

Accentuating the width of the car is the seamless transition from the headlights to the radiator grille. The MercedesBenz pattern is standard on the radiator grille cover. The dramatic surfaces continue to define the exterior design. It is enhanced with precisely moulded edges that accentuate the proportions and the muscular wheel arches. They also strike a balance between elegance and power. The AMG Line is available with 19-inch or 20-inch mixed-profile tyres and wheel arch liners in the vehicle colour. Also offered as optional extras are easy entry running boards and, from AMG Line upwards, a Night package. All models are equipped with electric drive technology, in the form of a mild hybrid system with 48-volt technology and an integrated startergenerator for an extra boost

and energy recuperation. And the new GLC Coupé is at home on almost any terrain. Whether on or off the road, it impresses with its comfort and agility. The sports suspension is standard. The optional 4.5° rear axle steering makes the vehicle even more manoeuvrable. It is offered in the Technology package along with AIRMATIC air suspension. Off the road, the Coupé scores with numerous features such as 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The interior of the new GLC Coupé is equipped with the modern AVANTGARDE line as standard. The dashboard is clearly structured. The upper section has a wing-like profile with new, flattened vent outlets. The lower section has a generous trim area that flows seamlessly into the curved centre console. The 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) highresolution LCD screen in front D E C E MBER 2023

of the driver appears to float freely above the wing profile and trim surface. The 11.9-inch (30.2 cm) central display rises from the centre console and likewise appears to float above the trim surface. Like the dashboard, the screen surface is slightly angled towards the driver. Standard equipment of the new GLC Coupé already includes the AVANTGARDE Line, among other features. This includes large displays, smartphone integration, wireless phone charging and heated seats for drivers and passengers. In addition, the package logic has been considerably simplified. Features frequently combined by customers in the past are now offered as packages. Where design options such as paint finish, upholstery, trim, and wheels are concerned, our customers can configure their vehicles individually as before. The new GLC Coupé is available with electrified drives. The mild-hybrid units include a secondgeneration integrated DEC EMB E R 2023

starter-generator (ISG) and a 48-volt on-board electrical system. The integrated startergenerator in the mild hybrid variants supports the combustion engine especially at low engine speeds. Complemented by the turbocharger, this delivers outstanding power. The motor in the flagship GLC 300 d develops an impressive 198kW and 550Nm with an additional 17kW and 200Nm added from the aforementioned mildhybrid system. The vehicles 0-100km/h performance is rated at 6.4 seconds. The GLC Coupe offers outstanding performance with classleading fuel efficiency. Expect around 5.5l/100km to 6.1l/100km. The latest generation of the Driving Assistance Plus package contains additional and improved functions. These reduce driver workload in day-today situations for more comfortable and safer driving. When danger threatens, the systems can respond to impending collisions as the situation demands.

As before, the new GLC Coupé is also suitable for off-road driving and has several new features and systems designed for that use. Standard equipment includes an off-road driving mode and DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation). In off-road mode, the GLC Coupé with the 360° camera offers a “transparent bonnet”. The central display shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, including the front wheels and their steering position. With even more boot volume than before, the GLC Coupé is ready for big road trips: 545 litres (45 litres more than the preceding model) to 1,490 litres (a plus of 90 litres) in the mild hybrid models. The EASY-PACK tailgate is standard. This opens or closes conveniently at the touch of a button using the ignition key, the switch in the driver’s door or the unlocking handle on the tailgate. Pricing GLC 220D (Including VAT & Service & Maintenance): R1,392,350.00 GLC 300D (Including VAT & Service & Maintenance): R1,447,350.00

Navigating the Thin Line: Understanding Fatigue vs. Burnout In the fast-paced whirlwind of modern life, it’s common to experience bouts of fatigue. However, as we navigate the demands of work, relationships, and personal aspirations, it’s crucial to recognize the fine line between temporary exhaustion and the more serious, long-term condition known as burnout. The Anatomy of Fatigue: Fatigue is a natural response to exertion, both physical and mental. It’s the body’s way of signaling that it needs rest

and recovery. Occasional tiredness is a normal part of life, often a result of a challenging workout, a demanding day at the office, or even a late-night study session. While fatigue can impact our day-to-day functioning, it’s usually alleviated with a good night’s sleep, healthy nutrition, and adequate relaxation. Distinguishing Burnout: On the other hand, burnout is a more complex and pervasive state of exhaustion. It isn’t just a response to a particular event or circumstance; rather, it’s a prolonged sense of emotional, physical, and mental depletion. Burnout often results from chronic workplace stress, feelings of disillusionment, and a sense of being overwhelmed by responsibilities. It goes beyond the transient tiredness associated with a busy schedule

and can have profound effects on both professional and personal well-being. Key Differences: One crucial distinction between fatigue and burnout is the recoverability. Fatigue tends to fade with proper self-care, such as adequate sleep, nutrition, and relaxation. In contrast, burnout requires more comprehensive intervention. Addressing burnout may involve reassessing worklife balance, setting boundaries, seeking professional support, and making meaningful changes to the root causes of chronic stress. Another key difference lies in the symptoms. While fatigue may manifest as physical tiredness, burnout often presents a broader array of signs. These can include a sense of detachment or

cynicism about one’s work, diminished professional efficacy, and a persistent feeling of being emotionally drained. Recognizing these signs early on is crucial in preventing burnout from escalating to a point where it significantly impacts one’s life and well-being. Preventing and Managing: To combat fatigue, it’s essential to prioritize selfcare, including regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep. Managing stress through mindfulness

and relaxation techniques can also play a pivotal role in maintaining balance. For burnout prevention, a proactive approach is necessary. Regularly reassessing workloads, setting realistic goals, and cultivating a supportive work environment are crucial steps. It’s also vital to recognize when professional help is needed and to seek assistance in the form of therapy or counseling. In the pursuit of our goals and aspirations, it’s easy

to dismiss feelings of tiredness as mere fatigue. However, understanding the distinctions between fatigue and burnout is essential for our overall well-being. While fatigue is a temporary and manageable state, burnout requires a more nuanced approach to prevent its long-term consequences. By recognizing the signs, prioritizing self-care, and seeking help when needed, we can strike a balance that fosters resilience and ensures a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.

consumers of higher-end resorts are now expecting these amenities. A simple pool is no longer interesting enough.”

Waterparks are riding a wave of success in 2023. Thankfully, today’s waterparks go far beyond the stereotypical ‘beach chair and plastic cup’ experience, appealing to a diverse demographic of travellers.

Sangree added, “The waterpark resort properties have definitely benefited from the strong leisure comeback. And not only has their occupancy come back quicker, but their average rate has also grown more than that of the average hotel.” It’s easy to see why so many major hospitality brands are diving into waterpark features. These expansive aquatic playgrounds appeal to many travellers, including large multigenerational families and ‘bleisure’ travellers looking for flexibility and amenities catering to varied interests. Groups seeking bonding adventures also appreciate the team-building activities and laughs that waterpark options at resorts and hotels can provide. And for the trendy traveller inspired by TikTok and Instagram, those pool club vibes hit the mark for exclusivity.

Many of the trendiest waterparks offer exclusive pool club vibes with cabanas, upscale dining, and premium amenities to attract high-end visitors. Less ‘cookie cutter’ than old-school waterparks, these modern aquatic playgrounds are all unique and feel like a luxe beach oasis. A July 2023 article in Travel Weekly US reported the growing trend of hotels and resorts investing heavily in waterpark features and amenities.

“There’s definitely been a trend toward adding more waterpark amenities, and you see consumers willing to pay Here are five incredible waterparks more money if a room includes access around the world to add to your to a waterpark,” said David Sangree, president of the hospitality consulting firm travel wish list: Hotel & Leisure Advisors. “I think many DEC EMB E R 2023

A homegrown favourite What would a waterpark list be without Sun City? This local go-to saw the start of a multimillion-rand investment last year, releasing plans to upgrade and build new accommodations and facilities at the iconic resort – notably to appeal to the high-end and younger markets. The Palace of the Lost City also enjoyed a makeover worth over R208 million just in time for its 30th anniversary last December. The favourites still remain, beloved by generations of South African families. The Valley of the Waves, 1.4-kilometre lazy river, raging rapids, and massive slides, like the Temple of Courage, are as popular now as they were decades ago. The overall Sun City Resort complex also includes two championship golf courses, casinos, and wildlife encounters, so there’s much more than just waves on offer.

is the first free-fall dry slide where riders plunge 10 decks down, seated on a mat. The high-thrill Rush slide sends cruisers through exhilarating drops and a 360-degree loop.

For travellers who prefer their water fun with less adrenalin, Norwegian Prima features stunning infinity pools, upscale dining with ocean views, and glass walkways hovering above the ocean. Launched in August 2023, the new Norwegian Viva vessel offers similar amenities. Guests can expect innovative and award-winning experiences onboard the Prima class of vessels, with something for every traveller.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships also boast impressive onboard waterparks. FlowRider® surf simulators, the tallest slide at sea called The Blaster, and high thrill slides like Typhoon, Cyclone, and Riptide cater to adventure seekers. Then there’s the line’s AquaTheatre, featuring a deep pool and diving platforms for astonishing acrobatic shows. In 2024, Royal Caribbean’s new Icon of the Seas will unveil the largest waterpark at sea with six new slides. There’s no chance the little ones will be bored on this vessel!

Think you have to stay on dry land to enjoy the world’s best waterparks? Think again! “Today, you’ll find some of the most unbelievable waterpark experiences when sailing the high seas,” says Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa. “Cruise lines have hugely expanded their onboard waterpark offerings to attract more travellers.” Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Prima, which debuted in 2022, has some of the fastest and wildest slides at sea.
