• No excessive noise will be tolerated after 22:00 on weekdays and 24:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Security has been tasked to police this rule; please respect our security guards and their job to facilitate during this period.
• Please ensure that your pets are not a disturbance to your neighbours. Kindly make sure that your pets are not left alone. Please contact the HOA office for assistance if you require contact details for pet-sitting services.
• Whilst we encourage celebrations and social activities during the festive season, we ask that you respect your neighbours and not park vehicles illegally.
Please do not leave covered cars in common areas.

We wish you a blessed festive season and a prosperous new year. If you are travelling, please be safe.
Kind regards,
HHHOA
Epiphytes
Epiphytes need sufficient humidity and the correct air temperature to grow.
The water requirements are met not only by rain but also by dew and mist. Those species found growing in the Peruvian desert do not receive any actual rain during the year, surviving only on the moisture they get from the mists coming in from the ocean and condensing on the leaves.
Epiphytic orchids store water in swollen stems, known as pseudobulbs, while in others, which do not produce these structures, the leaves function as water-storage organs. Epiphytic orchids are absent from the winter-rainfall areas but are frequently seen in forests in the summer rainfall area. The plants dislike prolonged wet conditions during their winter resting-period and require adequate moisture during their summer growingseason.
Ansellias, the largest of epiphytic orchids in South Africa is an entirely African genus. They are found in subtropical woodlands of Zululand and on the Transvaal lowveld.
Aechmae, Guzmania and Vriesea are flowering epiphytes sold by the pot plant industry. The potting mixture anchors the roots but watering and fertilizing should be applied to the centre reservoir of each plant. The mature plant will only produce one long-lasting flower. After flowering, pups (offsets) are formed around the base. After about a year the offsets can removed from the dying mother plant and re-potted. They will flower within a few years.
Tillandsia (airplants). The white stuff on the leaves is called trichomes, and exist on all air plants. It’s very important for air plants because it’s how they absorb water and nutrients. Take care not to damage it.
Species like Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneaides) are fast growers, usually requiring dappled shade in our suburban gardens and are not native to South Africa.
The old man’s beard lichen (Usnea longissima) found along the mist-belt is often confused with Spanish moss. This lichen is slow-growing and rare due to pollution and loss of habitat.
Staghorn ferns The plants need good air circulation and high light intensity, but not direct sun.
Water and nutrients are mostly absorbed through the leaves, while the roots serve an anchoring purpose. These roots are not sufficient to keep a mature plant in place and the plant have to be secured to the support by using some kind of fastening material. When new basal fronds are produced, they will hide the fastening material.
A very important part of Staghorn ferns (Platycerium bifurcatum) are the attached brown leaves or fronds that look like parchment.
Do not remove these as they protect the plant and store water and nutrients.
The tiny whitish-grey scales on the green fronds slows transpiration.
Some Epiphytes tolerate more extreme conditions. Choosing the correct species for your area is important. Many of them can be grown in a small space, horizontally or
vertically and require very little attention.

How to decorate a Tree like a Professional
Written by: Leani Botha
With these easy steps you can make your Christmas Tree look spectacular!!
The biggest tip to decorating a tree is to take your time!!
Follow these steps and you can’t go wrong!
1. Open up
• Take the tree out of the box: Secure the stand. Assemble the tree from the bottom upwards.
• Open up the branches: Take the branch and open each branchlet in a different direction. There may not be two branches stuck together. Work your way from the bottom upwards.
Tip 1: Use a rotating tree stand from Santa’s Warehouse to WOW every one and get a 360 view at your tree.
Tip 2: Take your time!! This step is the most important step of all even if it takes hours; make the tree look perfect even without decorations!
Here are more specific instructions of how to assemble the trees.
Hinged
Christmas Tree
• Unpack the Tree: Remove all parts from the box and ensure all sections are present.
• Assemble the Stand: Open and secure the tree stand. Place it in your desired location.
• Connect Sections: Insert the bottom section into the stand, then stack the middle and top sections, ensuring they click into place.
• Drop the Hinged Branches: Let the hinged branches fall naturally into position.
• Shape the Branches: Start at the bottom, fluffing each branch by separating the tips to create a full and balanced look.
• Final Touches: Shaping All the Branches
• Work methodically from the bottom to the top.
• Bend tips slightly upward for a natural look.
• Step back occasionally to adjust and ensure symmetry.
• Now your tree is ready for decorating!
1. Lights
• Start with your light: Make sure the lights are working before you put them up.
• Start from the tip of your tree (end with your plug at the bottom).
• Go around and around the tree with the lights. Make sure the lights are evenly spread. Don’t push the lights too far into the tree. Make sure each light is visible and not behind a branch.
• Now start to hide ALL the wires with the branches. Fold the branches over the wires, but make sure it is not in front of the lights.
Tip: As you go along putting up the lights, stand back and look if the lights are evenly spread out.
2. Décor
• When you start with your decorations, start with the biggest decorations first then go smaller decorations and baubles to fill the spaces.
• If you have ribbon or tinsel, they are first to go onto the tree.
• After the ribbons you start with your poinsettias and bigger décor items. When you put them in, stand back and see if they fill the perfect space. If not take the time to make it right.
• Use the smaller décor to fill the spaces in between.
• After each decoration is put on the tree, stand back and make sure it is on the perfect spot
• All the decorations must be evenly spread.
Tip: Make sure there are no open gaps that all the décor are evenly spread out.
3. Tree topper
Put your tree topper on the tip of the tree, use a couple of branches to keep it steady.
Tip: If the tree topper is too heavy, fasten a dowel stick to the base of the tree topper and then fasten it to the tree with cable ties.

S E A S O N … F E S T I V E !
BY DR VICKY LOUW (BVSC)
T h e H o l i d a y S e a s o n :
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebrations, and festivities, but it also brings with it an array of potential health risks for our pets. At our hospital, every year during the festive season, we see cases come in because of exposure to foodrelated hazards, and exposure to toxic decorations, and as always during this time of year, we see a lot of stress and anxiety cases Being aware of these potential dangers can help ensure that your furry companions stay safe, healthy, and even festive with you throughout the season.
Holiday Foods and Toxic Treats:
One of the biggest risks to pets during the holidays is the abundance of rich, festive foods. Many holiday foods that are perfectly safe for humans can be dangerous, or even deadly, to pets.
Chocolate: Especially dark chocolate, contains theobromine, which can cause poisoning in pets. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures.
Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
• Onions and Garlic: These common holiday ingredients can cause gastrointestinal upset and damage to red blood cells, leading to anaemia in pets, particularly cats and dogs
• Alcohol: Many pet owners enjoy festive drinks, but alcohol is highly toxic to animals, even in small quantities. It can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulties, and even coma or death.
• Xylitol (Sugar Alcohol): Commonly found in sugar-free gum, candies, and baked goods, xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, leading to seizures, liver failure, and potentially death
Dietary Indiscretions:
During the holidays, it's tempting to indulge our pets with extra treats, but overfeeding can lead to weight gain, digestive upset, or pancreatitis an extremely painful and potentially life-threatening condition caused by inflammation of the pancreas. Make sure to stick to your pet's regular feeding routine and avoid giving table scraps. Have specific, healthy treats available for guests to give to your pets to prevent them from feeling guilty and giving something from the table
S t r e s s a n d A n x i e t y :
The holidays can be stressful for pets due to changes in routine, houseguests, loud noises from celebrations, and increased activity in the household. Some pets may exhibit anxiety or behavioural changes such as excessive barking, hiding, or destructive behaviour.
Noise Stress: Fireworks, party noisemakers, or even the hustle and bustle of guests can be overwhelming for pets. Cats and dogs with noise phobia may become fearful, leading to hiding, shaking, or even attempts to escape the house.
Separation Anxiety: If you're traveling or hosting family members, pets may feel stressed if their usual routine is disrupted Some pets may experience separation anxiety, leading to destructive behaviour or house soiling
Unfamiliar Guests and Crowds: Pets that are not used to large crowds or unfamiliar visitors can become anxious. To reduce stress, create a quiet space for your pet where they can retreat and feel safe away from the commotion.
Talk to your veterinarian about all the different stress relieving strategies you can implement as well as medicinal options, both natural and prescription medication are available.
Deadly Decorations and Gifts:
While festive decorations can add a magical touch to your home, many holiday decor items can be hazardous to pets.
Christmas Tree: Tinsel, tree ornaments, and lights can pose a choking hazard or intestinal obstruction if ingested Additionally, water in the tree stand may contain fertilizers or chemicals that could cause digestive upset if licked
Poinsettias and Lilies: While these plants are often used for decoration, they are toxic to pets. Ingesting them can lead to symptoms like drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in severe cases, organ failure.
Candles and Scented Oils: Pets can knock over candles, causing fires or burns. Additionally, some essential oils and scented candles can be harmful to pets, especially cats. Always supervise pets around lit candles and avoid using certain oils that can irritate their respiratory systems.
ENVIRONMENTAL
• Toys with Small Parts: Toys with small parts or pieces that can break off are a risk for pets who love playing with toys and who might be tempted to ingest toys. This poses a risk of becoming what we call a foreign body obstruction which might need surgical removal or can even be fatal. Be mindful of this when you have a pet at home which might be more inquisitive and more likely to play with children’s toys.
• Chew Toys and Edible Treats: When giving your pet a Christmas present, be mindful of the ingredients in chew toys and edible treats Some products, especially rawhide, can cause choking or digestive issues if not properly chewed. Always supervise your pet when they have a new toy or treat.
Hot Weather Hazards:
In South Africa, our festive season is during our summer months Hot weather, rain and thunder storms present unique risks for pets, especially for those with short noses, long coats and those who are prone to anxiety
• Hyperthermia and Heat Stroke: In pets, particularly dogs and cats, the risk of overheating is compounded by their inability to regulate heat as efficiently as humans. Dogs only sweat through their paws and rely on panting to cool off, which is much less effective than sweating. Cats are also limited in their cooling mechanisms, relying on grooming and panting, but these can be insufficient during extremely hot conditions.
• Dried up Water Sources: Evaporation of drinking water and subsequent dehydration can occur more quickly than you might think. If your pet is an outdoor dog or cat, ensure they have access to fresh, cool water at all times.
C o n c l u s i o n
By staying vigilant and taking some extra precautions, you can make sure that your pet enjoys the holiday season safely alongside you. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way. From all of us at Akira Animal Hospital, we wish you and your furry companions a happy and healthy holiday season!

Turn Your Kruger Safari into a
Wildly
If you’re picturing vast savannas, golden sunsets, and the heart-pounding thrill of encountering lions, elephants, and other majestic wildlife up close, then Kruger National Park is where you want to be. Here’s a guide to help you plan the adventure of a lifetime.
1. Choose the Right Season for Your Safari
One of the first things to consider is timing. Every season in Kruger has its own special appeal. Winter (May to August) is prime for wildlife spotting since animals tend to gather at waterholes, and the dry terrain makes them easier to see. Summer (November to February), on the other hand, is lush and alive, with newborn animals and vibrant birdlife—a dream for photographers and nature lovers alike. Think about what excites you most, and plan your timing around that!
2. Embrace the Journey with Some Road Prep
Kruger is vast, so expect plenty of road time to truly explore it. The drive from Johannesburg is about 4-5 hours, so be sure to bring snacks! For the perfect onthe-go options, check out The Trail Food Company for delicious and convenient snacks that are ideal for long trips. Once inside the park, you might cover as much as 200 km daily if you want to experience different areas. Trust me, packing a cooler with water, snacks from The Trail Food Company, and maybe a great playlist or podcast will make these drives feel like part of the adventure.
3. Smart Packing for Safari Success
Packing smart for a safari can really enhance your experience. Besides the basics, consider bringing along some extras that make a difference. A good pair of binoculars—like these from Karoo Outdoor Vortex Triumph® HD 10X42 —will help you spot distant wildlife. A power bank can be a lifesaver during power outages at camps, and don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent. You’ll be grateful you have them!
4. Dress for Kruger’s All-Day Weather Swings
Kruger mornings and evenings can be chilly, while midday brings the heat. Layers are key—think a light jacket for those early drives and breathable cotton clothes for the afternoons. Go for neutral colours; they help you blend in and keep bugs at bay!
5. Plan Your Route to See Your Highlights
Deciding where to explore is one of the most exciting parts of planning. The south of Kruger is bustling with big cats and other wildlife, while the north is quieter, ideal for bird lovers. Think about what interests you most and map out a route that hits your must-see spots.
6. Find the Perfect Place to Stay
Where you stay can truly enhance your Kruger experience. Here are a few standout options to match different travel styles:
Luxury Lodges: Kruger National Park is home to a selection of exceptional lodges, each offering its own distinct luxury safari experience. At Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, guests find unmatched comfort and privacy, with private plunge pools, dedicated butler service, and a rare wine collection in an underground cellar—an ideal retreat after a day on safari.
In the Greater Kruger, Safari Moon Lodge combines refined elegance with eco-friendly principles. Here, guests enjoy private game drives, guided bush walks, and gourmet dining — a perfect choice for those who appreciate nature and luxury in harmony.
For a truly secluded experience, Fifty-Five Mjejane Lodge, located in the serene Mjejane Game Reserve on the Crocodile River, offers a private retreat just for you and your guests. This exclusive lodge allows you to encounter the Big Five in a beautiful, undisturbed setting—ideal for those seeking intimacy and adventure in equal measure.
A Riverfront Gem in Marloth Park: Located in Marloth Park, Kruger Private Lodge is a stunning 7-bedroom retreat on the Crocodile River, where wildlife and birds roam freely. With four river-view rooms, three gardenview rooms, two river decks, and a boma for sunsets and stargazing, it’s a perfect escape. Visit Kruger Private Lodge for an unforgettable bush experience.
While marveling at wildlife freely roaming near the river, you can also experience something special by feeding Marloth Park’s own wildlife right at the back door—a unique touch for nature lovers seeking an immersive bush experience.
Private Game Reserves: Right next to Kruger are private reserves like Sabi Sand, where unfenced borders allow wildlife to roam freely between the park and reserves. These reserves offer exclusive experiences with smaller groups and more secluded safari
moments—perfect for spotting Kruger’s Big Five.
Self Catering: Travelers looking for flexibility and budget-friendly options, Kruger’s rest camps are a top choice for self-catering stays. Camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, and Satara offer fullyequipped kitchens, braai areas, and nearby grocery stores, making them ideal for families, groups, or anyone who enjoys cooking their own meals on safari. Staying right inside the park also means you’ll have easy access to morning and evening drives for the full Kruger experience.
If camping is on your agenda, Pretoria Caravans & Outdoor has a broad selection of campers, caravans, and outdoor gear to complete your adventure.
For more details on Kruger rest camps, look into Kruger Rest Camps.
No matter your preference—whether for luxury, seclusion, or a flexible, budget-friendly stay—each of these accommodations offers a unique way to immerse yourself in the Kruger experience.
7. Rise and Shine for Incredible Sightings
In Kruger, early mornings and late afternoons are magical. The cooler temperatures mean animals like lions and leopards are more active. Enter the park as soon as it opens to catch them on the move! Special Experiences to Enrich Your Safari Kruger offers more than just sightings from your vehicle. Here
are some experiences that bring you even closer to the wild:
Guided Bush Walks: Step into the heart of the wild with a guided bush walk! Safari Moon has already become the choice of film stars – having hosted Tom Cruise and Director Christopher McQuarrie for a few months for the making of Mission Impossible 8. In addition, it is the lodge chosen to host the many celebrities who compete in Get me out of here, I'm a celebrity, Australia. The world’s most discerning guests rave about Safari Moon’s décor and food, served with silver service, or around the fire in the romantic boma. The lodge is known for unmatched hospitality of its staff, under General Manager Emily-Jane, and world-class chefs.

FRIDAY 17 JANUARY AT THE LEMON ORCHARD RACE STARTS AT 18꞉00
REGISTRATION LINK WILL BE PROVIDED
AMAZING RACE
October welcomed the premiere of The Kids Amazing Race, Heritage Hill edition, where 11 teams, of two kids each, competed against each other in a race that took them around the world, to be crowned the very first winning team. Faced with numerous physical and mental challenges, each team powered through, helping each other along, until all 11 teams made it to the finish line. This was a first for Heritage Hill and judging by the kids’ response, it was the first of many to come.
Here are some highlights:
Teams were off to a great start in the egg-andspoon race, getting their first clue that led them to the 19th Century England where the second clue was hidden in a postbox in Windmill Way. From there it was just stones through to visit our very own ‘Loch Ness Lake’ and find the cookies that were true to Scottish tradition, shortbread of course. Next up it was time to head over to France, where roundabouts are used extensively to manage traffic flow. With only one roundabout in our estate, it was an easy find for the kids, and with a quick hula hoop pass they were in the land of lemons, Mexico.
To get to the next country, teams took part in a sack race through the lemon orchard, with their next clue waiting at the finish line. This time it was off to the maize for a mental challenge. Labyrinths are closely connected to
Greek mythology, and it was here that teams had to put their brains and eyes to work to find the names of various Greek gods and mythology figures in a Word Search. Their 5th clue led them to the tractor in Rasmus Erasmus boulevard where it was a numbers and counting game to confirm how many stars the United States national flag has, which are also representative of the 50 different states in America. With only three more clues left to find, teams were certainly getting tired, but not for one minute did they lose their motivation.
The Rose Garden played homebase to China, where roses have held significant cultural and historical significance for centuries. After a quick three-legged race, the teams found their next clue hidden in a traditional fortune cookie, specially made for our estate’s race premier. This second last clue led the teams to Italy, home of olives. There, in our Village’s Olive Orchard, kids had to taste various olives to identify which ones were infused with specific herbs and spices. Of all the challenges throughout the race, this one seemed to be the most challenging, but the teams powered through and quickly set off on the final leg of the race taking them all the way to the Australian Open. At the tennis courts the final challenge entailed getting two tennis balls into laundry baskets, either throwing them or by suing a tennis racket, which was much easier said than done. Despite the frustrations of this last challenge, and the many along the way, all 11 teams made it to the finish line in high spirits. A big congratulations to our winning
team Mignon & Annemie, and runners-up, Retief and Devin.
While there were some challenges and lessons learnt along the way, the HH Social Committee was overwhelmed by the positive response and seeing the wonderful energy and spirit of our kids, and The Kids Amazing Race in Heritage Hill will most definitely see a second season to come.

Ready-made meal delivery services make this a reality, letting you skip the stress of holiday cooking while still savoring a festive feast.
Why Ready-Made Meal Delivery is a Holiday GameChanger
Extra Time for What Matters Most
Let’s face it, holiday prep can be intense, and who wants to spend it all cooking? Ready-made meal delivery gives you back those precious hours, so you can actually enjoy time with loved ones. With
just a few clicks, you can have a spread of holiday favorites delivered to your door—no lines, no chopping, no lastminute stress. Just heat, serve, and enjoy.
Holiday Classics, Zero Hassle
Many services offer holiday-themed menus with all the seasonal favorites— think roasted meats, cozy sides, and traditional desserts. You get the warmth and taste of a homemade meal, but without the prep work. Simply pop dishes in the oven or microwave, and you’re good to go. It’s a wonderful way to indulge in holiday flavors without the time commitment.
Bye-Bye Grocery Crowds
We all know the madness of holiday grocery shopping—endless lines, crowded aisles, and the panic of missing ingredients. Ready-made meals let you avoid all that. You can pick your holiday
menu online, and your festive feast arrives fresh and ready to serve.
Kid-Friendly, Too
Holiday meals can be tricky with little ones around, especially when they have their own tastes. Many meal delivery services offer kid-friendly options that keep everyone happy and make mealtime easier on you. Say goodbye to juggling multiple dishes for picky eaters—these meals offer something for everyone.
Portion Control Made Simple
The holidays can be a bit indulgent, but with pre-portioned ready-made meals, you can enjoy your favorite flavors without going overboard. It’s a great way to sample a variety of festive dishes in just the right amounts, so you can feel satisfied without the waste.
Easy as Pie
Using a ready-made meal service is as convenient as online shopping, making it an ideal holiday helper. You choose a plan that suits your needs, select from a festive menu, and receive fresh, delicious meals delivered right to your door. With easy heating instructions and secure packaging, it’s perfect for a busy season when every moment matters.
Instead of spending hours cooking and cleaning, you’re left with a festive spread and more time to relax with family. Picture your holiday table set with a mouthwatering meal—minus the hours of prep.
Why Choose Ready-Made Meals This Season?
Holiday expenses can add up fast, but ready-made meal delivery provides a cost-effective way to manage spending. By cutting back on grocery trips, reducing
food waste, and avoiding impulse buys, these services let you pay only for meals you’ll actually enjoy—freeing up funds for holiday gifts and special outings. Many offer family-friendly, crowd-pleasing options that keep everyone happy without the need for extra dishes, simplifying mealtime for the whole family. Cleanup’s a breeze, too, with far fewer dishes, so you can spend more time enjoying the holiday spirit. When selecting a service, consider ones with festive menus, kid-approved choices, and eco-friendly packaging to make the season both joyful and sustainable.

season, give yourself the gift of time and delicious

Wreath, Eat, Repeat...
Create a Festive Charcuterie Wreath for Your Holiday Table
Looking for a way to impress guests with a deliciously festive appetizer? This Christmas Charcuterie Wreath is not only visually stunning but also easy to assemble and filled with flavors everyone will enjoy. With a mix of savory meats, gourmet cheeses, seasonal fruits, and holidaythemed garnishes, it’s the perfect centerpiece for your holiday table.
Ingredients
• Cheeses: Small cubes or rounds of brie, cheddar, gouda, or your favorite festive cheeses
• Meats: Thinly sliced salami, prosciutto, and pepperoni
• Fruits: Grapes, cranberries, pomegranate arils, and apple or pear slices
• Veggies: Cherry tomatoes, mini bell peppers, and cucumber slices
• Garnishes: Fresh rosemary sprigs, thyme, or sage to form the wreath base
• Crackers: A mix of festive, shaped crackers for added crunch
• Extras: Marinated olives, nuts, and small holiday treats like chocolate-covered pretzels or candy canes for flair
Instructions
1. Arrange the Wreath Base: Lay rosemary sprigs in a circular shape on a large round platter or serving board. This forms the base of your “wreath”
2. Add Meats and Cheeses: Arrange meats and cheeses in clusters around the wreath. Roll the salami and prosciutto into small rosettes for a fancier look, and place them between the cheese clusters.
3. Incorporate Fruits and Veggies: Add grapes, cherry tomatoes, and apple or pear slices in open spots. Place cranberries and pomegranate arils in small bunches around the wreath to add a pop of holiday red.
4. Garnish for Festivity: Fill in any gaps with marinated olives, crackers, and small treats. The goal is to create a vibrant, full wreath that’s easy for guests to pick from.
5. Finishing Touches: Add a few sprigs of thyme or sage on top for added texture, and sprinkle some nuts for an extra layer of flavour.
Serving Tips
Serve with a variety of crackers or a fresh baguette, and consider a pairing with mulled wine or holiday cocktails to complete the festive vibe.
The Charcuterie Wreath combines classic holiday flavors with a stunning visual presentation, making it perfect for entertaining. Plus, it’s easy to customize with your favorite seasonal ingredients.

PLUGGED INTO THE FUTURE
Drawing on more than 15 years of hybrid technology expertise, Lexus has unveiled its second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in South Africa in the form of the new NX 450h+, following the recent introduction of the RX 450h+.
Class-leading Efficiency and Performance
Designated as the new halo model in the successful NX range, the NX 450h+ petrolelectric pairing features a fourcylinder 2.5-litre hybrid Atkinson cycle engine, a 134kW front electric motor, a 40kW rear electric motor, hybrid transaxle and a lithium-ion battery with 18.1 kWh capacity. The battery can be fully recharged in around two-and-a-half hours, using a 32 A station.
Being more energy-dense, the battery unit can be accommodated in the vehicle’s platform without intruding into the cabin or load space. Its location also contributes to the car’s low centre of gravity. The load compartment has the same volume as the NX 350h
hybrid electric model, with no space lost to powertrain components. Acknowledging how customers in the NX’s segment will typically use their vehicle for longer journeys, the fuel tank capacity is also unaltered, at 55 litres, one of the largest in the car’s class.
The quality of the battery, refined through Lexus’ superior technology know-how, is fundamental to the car’s EV performance.
In turn, the ICE’s high output and fuel efficiency are supported by a long, 103.4 mm stroke and high 14.0:1 compression ratio, together with Dual VVT-i electrically controlled intelligent variable valve-timing and D-4S direct/indirect fuel injection with multi-hole injectors.
The full plug-in system, including electric motors and battery, produces a total system output of 227kW, yielding a brisk acceleration Drawing on more than 15 years of hybrid technology expertise, Lexus has unveiled its second plug-in hybrid electric

The full plug-in system, including electric motors and battery, produces a total system output of 227kW, yielding a brisk acceleration time of 6,3 seconds for the 0-100 km/h dash, making it the performance pick of the NX. At the same
time, CO 2 emissions between 20 and 29g/km and average fuel economy of 1.3 l/100km in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) are similarly class-leading; of course this is assuming maximum usage of electrified propulsion.
It’s thanks to Lexus’ unmatched electrified vehicle expertise among premium car makers that this mid-size luxury SUV has immediately set a new reference point in its segment for its combination of performance and efficiency, including how far you can drive with zero exhaust emissions. And in this regard, it outperforms most of its rivals in all key metrics – by some distance.
The NX 450h+’s EV (electric vehicle) driving range is good for around 66.5 km on the NEDC, rising to 69-76 km in urban cycle journeys – the areas where clean vehicle performance is particularly crucial. Moreover, on the open road the Lexus can be driven
in EV (Electric Vehicle) mode at highway speeds, which means you can waft around in emission-free electric silence for most of your daily commuting needs including highway travel.
Crucially, it will also deliver first-class performance once its range is reached. That’s because it then reverts to full hybrid electric power, unlike most of its competitors which switch to their internal combustion engine, inevitably using more fuel and generating higher emissions.
“As a business, we have adopted a multi-pathway approach to crafting sustainable mobility solutions that leave no one behind. Diverse eco-friendly vehicle technologies have been developed to cater to different usage needs, economic circumstances, energy sources and infrastructure readiness, allowing everyone to immediately start contributing
to carbon neutrality,” says
Glenn Crompton, VP of Marketing at Lexus SA.
Flexible Driving Experience
The driver can select from four drive modes for the plugin hybrid electric system. EV (electric vehicle) mode is the default: the NX 450h+ will run purely on electric power until the limit of its range is reached. When the high voltage battery’s state of charge drops to a predetermined level, operation switches automatically to efficient HV (hybrid vehicle) mode. The Auto EV/HV mode automatically brings the hybrid engine into play when extra power is needed, then returning to EV operation immediately afterwards. The driver can also select CHG mode (charge mode) which automatically maintains the battery’s state of charge.
In addition, the driver can use Drive Mode Select to adjust the performance of vehicle systems to suit the journey, using a newdesign control on the centre console. Normal mode gives a balance between driving performance and economy, while Eco mode adapts throttle response and air conditioning performance to support fuel economy. Sport S mode adjusts steering feel and accelerator response for a sportier drive. Selecting Sport S+ provides additional control of the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and electric power steering (EPS) to Drawing on more than 15 years of hybrid technology expertise, Lexus has unveiled its second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in South Africa in the form of the new NX 450h+, following the recent introduction of the RX 450h+.

Diverse eco-friendly vehicle technologies have been developed to cater to different usage needs, economic circumstances, energy sources and infrastructure readiness, allowing everyone to immediately start contributing to carbon neutrality,” says Glenn Crompton, VP of Marketing at Lexus SA.
Flexible Driving Experience
The driver can select from four drive modes for the plugin hybrid electric system. EV (electric vehicle) mode is the default: the NX 450h+ will run purely on electric power until

the limit of its range is reached.
In addition, the driver can use Drive Mode Select to adjust the performance of vehicle systems to suit the journey, using a new-design control on the centre console. Normal mode gives a balance between driving performance and economy, while Eco mode adapts throttle response and air conditioning performance to support fuel economy. Sport S mode adjusts steering feel and accelerator response for a sportier drive. Selecting Sport S+ provides additional control of the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and electric power steering (EPS) to give a more focused sporting, responsive driving experience. An additional Custom mode allows the user to apply their preferred settings for the powertrain, AVS, EPS and air conditioning.
Furthermore, using this advanced powertrain does not compromise the NX’s authentic SUV capabilities: the NX 450h+ comes as standard with energyefficient e-Four all-wheel drive (AWD), using an additional electric motor to drive the rear axle when needed. Front and rear torque distribution is optimised according to driving conditions, all the while providing exhilarating yet elegant control for normal to spirited driving styles.
More Convenience, More Kit, More Safety, More Style
On-the-road accomplishments,
however, are just one aspect of the new NX’s leap forward in efficient performance. Moving indoors, the NX is the recipient of a full digital makeover, but done with the understated class and elegance of a Lexus. Of course, there’s a customisable digital instrument nacelle in the line of site of the driver, supplemented by full-colour Heads-Up Display, but there’s also a 14-inch touchactivated central screen to control and monitor the full suite of bells and whistles the NX comes standard with. Key cabin amenities such as navigation, multimedia and climate control can be operated using advanced voice recognition.
The interior features on the standard menu are far too long to list, but here’s a few worth mentioning: Thematic Ambient Illumination (14 different lighting themes to choose from), front power seats, heated leathertrimmed steering wheel, Lexus Memory System (seats, steering wheel, HUD etc), wireless charger (Apple Carplay and Android Auto enabled) and a moonroof for an expansive in-cabin experience.
On the safety front, the NX comes equipped with the most advanced Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, spanning the full gamut of active and passive safety kit from Pre-Collision and Active Cornering Assist to All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and a Lane Departure Alert system. A standout feature unique to Lexus is Digital Latch with Safe Exit Assist. When exiting, it detects if another vehicle or bicycle is approaching from the rear and prevents the occupant from opening the door if it senses danger.
Being a member of the exclusive F SPORT family, the NX 450h+ bears all the hallmarks of the sporty marque with Dark Graphite Aluminium ornamentation, a unique meter, bolstered sport seats, steering wheel, and aluminium pedals and scuff plates setting it apart. With perforated interior trim in Black and Circuit Red, the sport-
inspired materials are integrated on the seats, steering wheel and centre console.
The bold F SPORT grille is integrated into the front and rear bumpers for a remarkable first impression. The 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels are framed by colour-key over fenders, improving curb appeal and adding to the sporty appearance. There’s also a unique F SPORT colour –Poseidon Blue.
