5 ESTATE NEWS JUNE 2024

Village Braai & Clubhouse Grand Opening:

A Perfect Blend of Community & Celebration

The Village Braai is always a great event for residents to get together, socialise and get to know each other, after all, nothing brings South Africans together like a braai. This year was a special occasion though as the Village Braai also served as the official opening of the newly built Heritage Hill Clubhouse.

Welcome drinks, a jumping castle and balloons featuring the estate brand colours gave the event a festive party vibe and residents were treated to a little something sweet with Leapfrog Property Group’s delicious cupcakes. Although fires were lit late afternoon, the party continued well into the night with residents chattering away, laughing together and just enjoying this new space. The Clubhouse was certainly the perfect venue for the Village Braai and vice versa the event was a great opportunity for residents to experience all the amenities the new Clubhouse has to offer.

The Clubhouse features two swimming pools for both kids and adults, a spacious sandpit, tennis court, a ten-seater boardroom, main hall, restrooms, and spacious patios. It further makes a great venue for events in that it has full bar facilities, with wines coolers and fridge, as well as a fully equipped kitchen, two separate braai areas

and a boma. All these amenities are available for use and enjoyment by all residents and various areas can also be booked for your own private events. Just jump onto the Heritage Hill App to make your booking.

Groundcovers

They limit germination of weeds, prevent soil erosion and retain soil moisture. It can be plants or material such as gravel, bark chips or pebbles.I find plants to be the exciting choice.

The plants can vary significantly from flat growing, creeping varieties to small spreading perennial bushes. It will include grasses as well as perennial flowers and a wide variety of succulents.

When planting a new garden, hard landscaping is done first, then trees and shrubs are added, and the final touch will be a variety of groundcovers.

The plants are not suitable for high traffic areas the exception being filling small gaps between pavers. Flat growing varieties such as Creeping Jenny, Falkia repens or Mondo grass (Kyoto dwarf) are suggested. The plants chosen should not spread vigorously as maintenance would become impossible.

Rooftop gardens with less than 10cm of soil, limit the choice of plants and slow growers will prevent regular replacement. The general idea being to create a green carpet on the roof.

JUNE 2024

Slopes need plants with a deep root system. In addition, a biodegradable soil blanket can be used before adding plants to prevent soil erosion and evaporation. The plants should be long-lived and have a spreading habit. Shrubs like Plumbago, Carissa and Barleria are used on their own or in combination with flat growing groundcovers.

Vertical gardens will have less maintenance if long-lived species with a compact habit is chosen. Succulents such as vygies seem like an obvious choice, but many species are shortlived and need to be replanted every few years.

Grasses are a popular choice for large areas. The plants are cut back in spring. To avoid a bare patch, spring flowering bulbs can be added. After a few years grass clumps can lose their vigour and are then divided and replanted.

Carpobrotus is often used by gardeners and landscapers alike.

The plants are easy to grow, require limited irrigation and are evergreen.

The downside being that they die-back after a few seasons and ongoing replacement is needed.

Asystasia gangetica will cover large areas with dark green foliage and foxglove like flower appearing throughout the year.

Keep in mind that the water requirements of the different species planted together should be the same. Carex grasses need moist soil and Aloe prefer dry conditions. The plants will perform well when planted together.

As with all plant choices, the amount of sun, the climate, and the soil type is important to achieve success.

With the variety of species available you will always find a groundcover that will be perfect for that special spot in the garden.

Why Boosting Immunity is Important

Boosting your immune system is crucial, especially during the winter months when flu and cold viruses are prevalent. A strong immune

JUNE 2024

system helps your body to fight off infections and reduces the severity of symptoms if you do get sick. This chicken vegetable soup is rich in vitamins A and C from the vegetables, protein from the chicken, and minerals from the bone broth, all of which are essential for a healthy immune response.

Benefits of Chicken Soup for Flu Symptoms

Chicken soup is often recommended for flu symptoms due to its numerous health benefits:

• Hydration: The broth helps keep you hydrated, which is essential when fighting off infections.

• Nutrient-Rich: Packed with vitamins and minerals that support immune function.

• Anti-Inflammatory: Ingredients like garlic and onions have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the severity of cold symptoms.

• Easy to Digest: Warm, liquid meals are easier to digest, making it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients it needs.

Ingredients

• 700 grams skinless, boneless chicken breasts or thighs

• 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil

• 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced

• 4 medium-sized carrots, peeled and diced

• 4 celery stalks, sliced

• 2 bell peppers (any color), seeded and diced

• 1 large red or yellow onion, diced

• 2 cups fresh or frozen green beans, chopped bite-sized

• 3 cups fresh or frozen cauliflower florets, bite-sized

• 1 (425 grams) jar tomato sauce

• 6 cups chicken bone broth

• 1 cup water

• 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

• Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste

• Fresh parsley, chopped (for serving)

• Fresh lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel and set aside. Heat oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Add carrots, celery, bell peppers, and onion, then cook for about 3-5 minutes until the onion is translucent and the veggies are slightly tender but firm.

Add the chicken, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, sea salt, and pepper, then cook until the mixture starts to bubble, about 5 minutes.

Stir in the broth and water, cover, and let simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

Shred the chicken using two forks and return it to the pot.

Stir in cauliflower florets and green beans, then continue to simmer for about 10 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender.

Remove from heat and ladle into bowls.

Garnish with parsley and serve hot with fresh lemon wedges.

Some tips to elevate your living spaces:

Choosing

the Perfect Fabric

Selecting the right fabric for your furniture is crucial. Here are some tips:

Consider Use: For high-traffic areas, opt for durable fabrics like microfiber or leather.

Colour and Pattern: Light colours make a room feel larger, while dark fabrics add warmth. Patterns hide stains and wear.

Comfort: Feel the fabric to ensure it meets your comfort expectations.

Durability: Look for a high rub count for frequently used furniture.

Revamping Your Living Room

Small changes can make a big impact:

Reupholster Furniture: Update your furniture with a modern fabric.

Add Accent Cushions: Mix different sizes, textures, and colours.

New Curtains: Choose light fabrics for a bright feel or heavy fabrics for a formal look.

Statement Pieces: A bold armchair or custom headboard can be a focal point. Throw Blankets: Add warmth and texture to your space.

Caring for Your Upholstered Furniture

Proper care extends the life of your furniture:

Regular Cleaning: Vacuum regularly to remove dust and debris.

Spot Cleaning: Blot spills immediately and use a mild cleaner if necessary. Rotate Cushions: Rotate and fluff cushions regularly.

Protect from Sunlight: Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Professional Cleaning: Schedule cleaning every 12-18 months.

Movie in The Park

Movie in the Park is a longstanding Heritage Hill tradition, brining back memories of the olden days with drive-ins and black and white movies. Though no cars and some technological advancements with LED big screens and colour animations, the Heritage Hill Move in the Park is a perfect family date, with picnic blankets, snacks and entertainment under the stars. The movies featured this April were the beloved Lilo and Stitch, and Sing 2.

Lilo and Stitch can almost be considered a classic given this animated film was first produced in 2002 (more than 20 years old). This Walt Disney classic revolves around an orphaned girl names Lilo Pelekai and an extraterrestrial creature named Stitch. These

two characters develop a close bond through the Hawaiian concept of ‘ohana’, meaning extended family which is a concept we hold close to our hearts. Featuring Daveigh Chase and Chris Sanders as the voices of the two main characters, this animation was a boxoffice success and was even nominated for an Academy Award.

Sing 2, a more recent film produced in 2021, is an animated musical about the character Buster Moon and his group of talented friends putting on a show to impress an entertainment mogul. This film is star studded with an ensemble voice cast featuring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Bono, Halsey, Pharrell Williams and many more. The film was also box office hit, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of 2021. Rumours have it there is yet another sequel in production, so who knows, maybe next year’s Movie in the Park will feature Sing 3.

Wine Fest

Winemaking has always been a science and an art admired by many, but associated with only a talented few. While the science and art are admirable, the true essence of many great wines lie in the inspiration behind it. Many winemakers and vineyards draw inspiration from their family and heritage, such as Robertson, Aurelia, Spier, Fat Bastard, Friesland and Rikus Neethling who all graced us with their presence of exquisite wines at this year’s Heritage Hill Wine Festival. Also exhibiting their best wines were Four Paws, Stellenzight, Le Chante and Pink Valley, who all drew inspiration from nature and wildlife.

Le Chante and Pink Valley finds it origin with Oddo Family Wines. Pascal and Lorraine Oddo acquired their first wine estate in France in 2015, le Domaine du Vallon des Glauges in Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence. Planted in the former bed of the Durance, it is an area well known for its unique landscape and protection of wildlife. From there the family branched out to South Africa, Italy and further into France, acquiring another six farms accompanied by family partners across these regions. In South Africa the Oddo Family partnered with Schalk Joubert and currently have three wine labels in production, namely Taaibosch, Le Chante and Pink Valley all nestled in between the Helderberg mountains in the Stellenbosch region.

While the Oddo Family Wines have wildlife protection rooted in its first vineyard, another winemaker has taken wildlife conservation to the next level. Hailing from the beautiful town of Franschhoek, Four Paws has joined hands with The Selati Wilderness Foundation to support their ongoing work in cheetah conservation, a truly South African cause. Two of the Four Paws’ wines on display at this year’s Heritage Hill Wine Festival, Huja and Lillie, are named after the farms that make up the Selati Game Reserve, an area historically populated by cheetahs. Sadly cheetahs are considered a ‘vulnerable’ species as marked by the IUCN Red List of

ESTATE NEWS 34 JUNE 2024

Threatened Species due to the intense pressure and change in their natural habitats. Four Paws, together with Selati Game Reserve have truly blended the art of wine making with wildlife conservation. With each purchase of their delightful wines you are contributing to the preservation of Selati’s cheetahs.

Another vineyard drawing inspiration from nature is Stellenzight, taking in the symbolism of the Dragonfly into its brand. According to Stellenzight, Dragonflies have long been associated with balance and harmony in many cultures, with its ability to hover in the air and change direction swiftly and effortlessly, maintaining equilibrium in flight. It is this symbolism that Stellenzight aims for with each of its wines, creating the perfect balance within each bottle and continuously reinforcing this connection in its brand and values.

Although we focus on the enjoyment of the wonderful flavors and aromas of all these wines, remember that behind each and every wine and wine farm at the festival hides a story of family, heritage and care for nature and wildlife, and that’s where the true inspiration lies.

Buzzing Into Winter:

How Honey Can Boost Your Immunity and Why We Need to Save the Bees

Winter is here, and staying healthy is a priority. One timeless remedy is honey, a sweet powerhouse of health benefits.

Honey: Your Winter Health Ally

Honey is packed with live enzymes, antioxidants, and antibacterial properties, making it a natural immune booster. Use a wooden or plastic spoon to preserve its beneficial enzymes. A daily dose of honey can soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation, and act as a natural cough suppressant. Plus, it contains a substance that enhances brain function, perfect for staying sharp during the winter months.

The Importance of Protecting Bees

Bees are essential pollinators, crucial for the growth of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. However, bee populations are declining due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change. If you encounter a bee problem, contact a bee removal company instead of exterminating them. Professional removers can safely

relocate bees, ensuring they continue their vital role in our ecosystem. Fascinating Honey and Bee Facts

• Propolis, produced by bees, is a powerful natural antibiotic.

• Honey never expires.

• Historically, honey was used to preserve bodies, such as those of great emperors.

• The term “honeymoon” comes from the tradition of consuming honey for fertility.

• A single bee visits over 1,000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

• One of the earliest coins featured a bee symbol, highlighting their value.

This winter, boost your immunity with honey and take steps to protect our buzzing friends. Together, we can enjoy a healthier season and a sustainable future.

Deep gratitude to the humble BEE!

FAUX PLANTS

Artificial plants are frequently used by interior designers. The quality and appearance of top of the range silk plants are exceptional.

Outdoor use in our climate at present is minimal. We have such a wide variety of natural plants to choose from that you can find a suitable specimen for nearly every spot in the garden.

Due to water problems, climate and everyday lifestyle changes, the use of faux plants will increase dramatically in future.

Artificial outdoor plants have a limited life span, but less maintenance is making it a viable solution for specific areas. Shaded patios, balconies and south facing courtyards can be green without a single plant.

The product that you choose need to have UV blocking technology and have strong colourfast pigments when used outdoors.

Hedge plants:

Natural hedge plants will take a few years to reach maturity. Plant the small hedge plants but add a faux plant hedge behind it. This will provide instant privacy and have the purpose of a windbreak. By the time that the faux hedge becomes tatty the living hedge will completely hide it.

Garden walls:

Adding a lattice trellis in front of the wall and covering it with faux ivy will supply instant depth to your view.

A backyard wall completely covered with faux greenery will transform the area in a soothing green environment.

Hanging baskets:

Can be added to any suitable support. No need to worry how a watering can or hosepipe will reach the basket. These are especially useful in garden design as background fillers while baskets with natural plants are used for close up viewing.

Topiaries:

Container plants pruned into a certain shape need extra care and maintenance. By using a faux topiary in an attractive pot all these problems are eliminated.

JUNE 2024

Covering an unsightly object:

Cover the jojo tank or grey-water pipes and even air conditioners.

Pool filters will be out of sight and there will be nothing shedding leaves into the pool.

Smaller projects such as a fence or wall can be done by any DIY handyman. Where you need a framework it should be handled by professional installers.

Faux lawns come in different colours, thickness and height. Choose the correct one for the area you need to cover. Areas with bad drainage or a slope will need a different approach, compared to a level firm surface.

Cleaning:

Rain will keep hedges and shrubs clear of dust or it can be hosed down. Depending on the type of lawn installation the grass will swept or a leaf blower can be used to clean away leaves.

Solid waste from dogs has to be removed and the area hosed down. A cleaning solution from faux grass suppliers is applied to remove any smell or spill.

A serious gardener will not easily opt for a faux plant solution.

But when used correctly, artificial plants will provide years of visual pleasure to those difficult areas, and require no further attention.

The Marvelous Magic of Dance for Kids! TWINKLE TOES & tumbleweeds

• Strength and Flexibility: Dance styles such as acrobatics demand a high level of strength and flexibility. Regular practice can significantly improve muscle tone and joint flexibility.

Injury Prevention

Dance, in its many forms—from acrobatics to contemporary dance— offers a multitude of benefits for children, encompassing both physical and mental well-being. This article explores the various advantages of dance, highlighting why it is a valuable activity for children and referencing credible sources to support these points.

Physical Benefits of Dance

Improved Physical Fitness

• Cardiovascular Health: Dance is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. It helps improve cardiovascular health, increasing heart rate and enhancing circulation.

• Coordination and Balance: Dance routines require precise movements and coordination. This helps children develop better balance and spatial awareness.

Enhanced Motor Skills

• Fine and Gross Motor Skills: Dance involves intricate movements that enhance fine motor skills, while large, sweeping movements improve gross motor skills.

• Body Awareness: Through dance, children become more aware of their bodies and how they move. This can lead to better posture and body mechanics.

• Muscle Strengthening: Strengthening muscles through dance can help prevent injuries. Strong muscles support joints and reduce the risk of strains and sprains.

• Flexibility: Increased flexibility helps prevent injuries by allowing greater range of motion and reducing muscle stiffness.

Mental and Emotional Benefits of Dance

Cognitive Development

• Memory and Learning: Learning dance routines requires memorization and sequential thinking, which can enhance cognitive abilities and improve memory.

• Problem-Solving Skills: Dance often involves understanding patterns and

sequences, which can help children develop strong problem-solving skills.

Emotional Expression and Stress Relief

• Creative Expression: Dance provides an outlet for children to express themselves creatively. This can be especially beneficial for those who might struggle with verbal expression.

• Stress Reduction: Physical activity, including dance, is known to reduce stress. The release of endorphins during dance can improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Social Skills and Teamwork

• Collaboration: Many dance forms involve group routines, which teach children the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

• Communication: Through dance, children learn to communicate non-verbally, enhancing their ability to understand and interpret body language.

Confidence Boost

• Performance Opportunities: Dancing on stage in front of an audience helps build confidence. The experience of performing and receiving applause can be incredibly empowering for children.

• Self-Esteem: As children improve their dance skills, they gain a sense of accomplishment, boosting their selfesteem and encouraging them to take on new challenges.

Pro’s of Dance for Children

• Holistic Development: Dance promotes holistic development, addressing physical, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of a child’s growth.

• Accessible and Inclusive: Dance can be adapted to suit various skill levels and abilities, making it an inclusive activity for all children.

• Lifelong Skills: The discipline, creativity, and physical fitness gained through dance can benefit children throughout their lives.

According to an article by Verywell Mind, dancing can significantly improve mental health by boosting brain function, reducing stress, and enhancing self-esteem. It also highlights that dancing helps in social bonding and reducing feelings of loneliness (Verywell Mind). Additionally, Psychology Today points out that dance can serve as a powerful tool for both emotional and physical health, aiding in stress management, enhancing flexibility, and fostering a sense of community (Psychology Today).

Conclusion

Incorporating dance into children’s routines can offer profound benefits, both physically and mentally. From improved fitness and coordination to enhanced cognitive skills and emotional well-being, dance is a versatile and enjoyable activity that supports the holistic development of children. Encouraging children to engage in dance can lead to healthier, happier, and more well-rounded individuals.

By integrating dance into children’s lives, we can help them build a foundation for a healthy and balanced future.

Storytelling, stargazing and sunblock – a family adventure

Under a vast African sky, lit with twinkling stars, our LETAMO Game Ranger, Darian de Bruin, tells us that the indigenous San People of South Africa believed that the stars were created by a little girl.

“Growing worried that her dad had lost his way when he didn’t come home from hunting one evening, the little girl grabbed a handful of cinders from the fire and tossed them high into the sky. Glittering in the dark the cinders stayed suspended, lighting up the night and directing her father home to her.”

The following morning, during our sunrise game drive, Darian stops the vehicle. We wait while a miniscule beetle pushes a ball of dung, many times its size, across the road. The dung beetle pauses, climbs on top of the ball, and looks at the sky before resuming his journey. Darian explains how dung beetles can tell directions from the position of the sun and explains the important role these tiny creatures play in the ecosystem.

Plucking a red flower from the bushveld he turns the stem into a bush whistle and hums a tune. Later, when he picks a handful of leaves from an African weeping wattle, he is rewarded with embarrassed giggles from the kids when he tells them that the tree, with its silky soft leaves, is also known as the toilet paper tree.

Pausing at the edge of a lake to watch a family pod of hippos frolicking in the water, Darian tells us that these enormous mammals make their own sunscreen. “Hippos secrete a red-coloured mucous from glands under their sensitive skin. This creates a colourful coating which hardens on the skin, helping to control body temperature and acting as a potent sunscreen that blocks out UV rays.”

These are the stories that have stayed with my son, and which he relates to me when we look at the stars back at home, spot beetles in the garden or page through books with pictures of hippos in them. They bring back the pleasure of our adventure at LETAMO - a new family-friendly lodge in the malaria-free, Big Five QWABI Private Game Reserve, a short two-and-a-half-hour drive from Pretoria.

Families can book interleading Deluxe and Premium Rooms or upgrade to a Luxury Suite, which boasts its own private plunge pool and outdoor shower.

Kids’ Clubhouse

In the dedicated Kids’ Clubhouse at LETAMO we peer through the lens of a microscope at insects and seed pods. We closely inspect a weaver’s nest on display and a cross-sectioned dung ball. While waiting for a craft class to start, we read facts about the fearless honey badger. There’s a jungle gym, a kids’ pool and even a padle court to try out during the hours when we aren’t on one of the twice daily game drives or enjoying a meal together as a family on the deck overlooking the bushveld.

CHARGING AHEAD: EXPLORE THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIFICATION WITH LEXUS

Lexus has always been synonymous with cutting-edge engineering, impeccable build quality and a commitment to the utmost luxurious Takumi craftsmanship. Now, the brand is adding another defining feature to its brand plans, a commitment to carbon-neutrality by 2050 through realistic electrified motoring.

Globally and by 2030, the brand plans to achieve a full line-up of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in all categories, and by 2035, aims to sell 100% BEVs globally, contributing to the realisation of a carbon-neutral society. The vision: to utilise electrification technology “as a means to enhance vehicle performance to pursue driving pleasure for all future generations” explains Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe.

Lexus is committed to introducing more than

10 new electrified vehicles by 2025 as part of the luxury brand’s ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision, and their forecast is for the sales ratio of electrified vehicles to exceed that of either petrol- or diesel-only models.

With a current market share of 24% within the premium New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market, Lexus is committed to the ongoing ‘Lexus Electrified’ mission that stretches across all current EV technologies, including battery

The Multi Stage Hybrid System

The LC 500h self-charging full hybrid powertrain features a 220kW 3.5-litre V6 engine and Lexus’ revolutionary Multi Stage Hybrid System. The total system output is 264kW.

The Multi Stage Hybrid System is one of the most significant technical advances yet developed by Lexus. It overturns the traditional “eco” perception of hybrid powertrains to deliver authentic high performance, unlike anything seen before. In essence, the system uses a multi stage shift device to amplify engine and electric motor output in four stages, making use of the full range of engine speeds. This gives more direct response to driver inputs and a higher level of dynamic performance and driving pleasure.

electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) as well as other electrified models, all of which are planned to be in line with the needs of each country and region around the world.

Lexus increased maximum engine speed from 6,000 to 6,600rpm, while the 0-100 km/h acceleration time remains at five seconds with a top speed of 250km. While the V6 itself is smooth and very quiet, it is less thirsty during throttle openings, helping the driver to save fuel. The Multi Stage Hybrid System’s shift logic produces a smooth and a more linear response, and also sharpens performance through bends with an automatic downshift to second gear when accelerating out of a turn.

Luxurious Craftsmanship

Meticulous attention-to-detail and luxurious craftsmanship define the LC 500h. Its sleek, aerodynamic design not only enhances its visual appeal, but also optimises fuel efficiency, ensuring a stylish and eco-conscious driving experience.

In order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the brand plans to focus on the entire lifecycle of its model line-up - from the manufacturing of materials, parts and vehicles, to vehicle logistics, to the final disposal and recycling of older vehicles. Lexus is scheduled to open a new business and technical centre in March 2024 designed to push boundaries and renew innovation.

Style and Design

The spindle grille is finished in chrome and has a mesh design with a visual tension that changes as it spreads across the front of the car. The unique LC lighting signature is created by independent daytime running lights in an arrowhead configuration and ultra-compact triple LED headlamp units. Achieving this remarkably slim headlight design played an important role in helping the designers achieve a low bonnet line and short front overhang. A no-compromise exterior design features 21-inch run flat forged alloy wheels, a boot spoiler with a retractable wing that comes standard, and a carbon-fibre roof.

Rear Styling

Locally, the Lexus New Energy Vehicle (NEV) line-up consists of:

SUVs:

At the rear the coupe’s roof tapers down between muscular wheel arches, reinforcing the car’s wide and stable stance. The Lexus spindle shape is visible here in a three-dimensional form that is generated by lines flowing from the front of the car and along the sides, before cutting back around the inner edge of the rear combination lamps. The line of the spindle then moves outwards, following the shape of the licence plate mounting and outer edges of the tailpipes.
