Letter from the MANAGER
Dear Lombardians,
As the festive season draws near, I want to take a moment to reflect on the past year and extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your role in making this year a remarkable one for our community. We have many successes to celebrate and accomplishments to be proud of.
Our collaborative efforts in the development of common areas, including ongoing improvements to our wetland areas, have created even more beautiful spaces for everyone to enjoy. Our commitment to environmental stewardship has paid off, with our wetland rehabilitation initiative earning an international award—a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team and supportive members.
We held a very successful Annual General Meeting, where we shared exciting updates and received valuable feedback from our members. Together, we made significant strides in reducing our debtors’ book, reinforcing the financial health of our community
Most importantly, I am delighted to report that we have enjoyed another year free from security incidents, ensuring that our estate remains a safe, peaceful, and inviting place for all. Our security team’s diligence, along with everyone’s cooperation, continues to contribute to our strong sense of community safety.
As we look to the coming year, we are excited to build on these achievements, and we’re deeply grateful for each member’s support, trust, and commitment.
On behalf of the entire HOA team, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful and restful festive season and a blessed New Year.
May this season bring you happiness, health, and cherished memories. Thank you again for making this year a true success, and we look forward to an even brighter 2025 together!
Warm regards,
Carli

REFRESHER ON RULES:
Home Modifications
Planning to paint, extend, or make any exterior changes to your home? Please reach out to the HOA office before appointing contractors to ensure compliance with both local authority regulations and HOA rules. We encourage members to seek approval first rather than “ask for forgiveness”. This policy also applies to additions such as air conditioning units, generators, solar installations, and even gutters. Our team is here to guide you through the process; please reach out for assistance!
Moving & Construction Vehicle Guidelines
We know moving, building, and renovating can be stressful. As the estate continues expanding its irrigation system and enhancing the gardens, please ensure moving or delivery trucks are no longer than 10 meters. Larger trucks often struggle to navigate our narrow roads and may damage common property, especially sprinklers. Please also note that furniture removal trucks may only enter the estate until 17:00.
Tenant Issues & Access Policies
For landlords experiencing non-payment issues with tenants, please see this helpful article on managing rent disputes: Evicting a Tenant for Non-Payment. While the HOA understands the challenges this presents, it cannot restrict access for tenants unless a formal court eviction order has been granted.
Builder’s Holiday Closure
Construction activities on the estate will pause from Friday, 13 December 2024, until Monday, 6 January 2025. All members currently in the construction phase must book their final inspection at least one week prior
to these dates. Please contact Sue Anne Van den Berg at admin@lombardyestate.co.za to schedule. Inspections not booked on time may incur a penalty.
Levy Statements (Mid City)
Many members using Gmail and Hotmail accounts are experiencing issues receiving levy statements from Mid City, often finding them in their spam or junk folders. If you have not received your levy statements, please check those folders and ensure the email address from which levy statements are sent is on your inbox list. For persistent issues, contact us at office@lombardyestate. co.za or melanie.lewis@midcity.co.za.

Pet Policies: Keep Pets Secure
We’ve received complaints about dogs roaming off-leash on the estate, sometimes behaving aggressively toward other members, staff, pets, and wildlife. Please make sure your dogs are secure and cannot
Tree Management At Fountains
We need member assistance with a challenge involving the River Bush Willow and Wit Stinkhout trees lining the Fountains entrance road. The Wit Stinkhout has an aggressive root system and requires significant water, which can impact nearby structures, sewage lines, and water systems. Although River Bush Willows usually do not have such roots, their horizontal growth (due to mist irrigation) is lifting pavements and curbs. The HOA is currently investigating solutions, which may include removing some trees to prevent further damage. Members with relevant experience or suggestions can contact Carli at gm@lombardyestate.co.za.
Plant A Tree Project: Join Us for Arbor Day 2025!
Although the estate is already lush, we’d like to grow even greener! To celebrate Arbor Day 2025, we’re inviting members to sponsor a tree. Each sponsor can select a tree from an approved list, and we’ll handle the planting. A location pin will be provided for you to track your tree’s growth, and each tree will have an honorary plaque. Stay tuned for more details on this communitybuilding event!
escape through gates or holes in fencing when unattended. Additionally, always leash your dogs when walking them and bring a waste bag.
Reminders for Pet Owners:
• Maximum of 2 dogs and 2 cats per household.
• Lakes and Fountains units: Only smallbreed dogs are allowed due to limited space.
• ID Tags & Microchips: Dogs and cats must wear a collar with a tag showing the owner’s name, address, and phone number. Unidentified pets roaming the estate will be taken to the HOA’s kennel, and penalties will apply. Unclaimed pets will be sent to the SPCA after 48 hours.
Pedestrian Crossings for Increased Safety
To enhance safety for all residents, especially children, the HOA will be installing pedestrian crossings connecting walkways over estate roads. These crossings aim to encourage drivers to slow down and give pedestrians a safer experience.
Snake Activity
With the warmer weather, snakes are becoming more active. For safe and humane removal of any snakes found on the estate, please contact one of our dedicated removal experts:
• Tinus Meyer: 082 569 2044
• Tarry Butcher: 076 300 1810

SECURITY From
Comprehensive Home Safety and Security Tips
As we approach the festive season, it’s important to remember that crime rates often rise during this time. By being proactive, you can secure your home and belongings to prevent opportunistic theft. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe:
To safeguard valuables in outdoor areas, ensure items such as TVs, sound systems, and other electronics in outdoor entertainment spaces are securely locked away. Gardening tools, hose pipes, children’s toys, bicycles, and other outdoor equipment should be stored indoors or in a secure area to prevent theft.
Maintaining home security is equally crucial. Always keep gates and doors locked and windows closed at night or when you’re away. Protect pets by ensuring they cannot wander outside the property or onto the street. Regularly
test alarms and panic buttons to confirm they’re functioning properly. If you notice any suspicious activity, contact the control room immediately at 087 654 4822.
For additional safety, consider hiring a trustworthy house sitter if you plan to travel. Keep emergency contacts easily accessible, and report any crimes promptly, providing detailed information to assist authorities. Practice caution when using ATMs or shopping, and avoid displaying valuables in public. Be vigilant when arriving at or leaving your home, and ensure phones and other valuables remain out of sight. Do not leave valuables in parked cars, and verify that outdoor lighting is functional, as well-lit properties are less appealing to criminals.
By implementing these measures, you can enjoy the festive season with peace of mind, knowing you’ve taken the necessary steps to protect your property and loved ones.

Cycad Help:
Protecting Your Garden from the Leopard Magpie Moth
If you have cycads in your garden, you might be facing the same challenge as the HOA’s cycads: unwelcome visitors wreaking havoc on your plants.
If your cycad’s new leaves are turning yellow with pale, straw-like edges, chances are you’re hosting the Leopard Magpie Moth (Zeronopsis leopardina). While the moth, with its striking orange and black wings, is a visual delight, its caterpillar phase is a cycad’s worst nightmare. Meet the Leopard Magpie Moth Caterpillar
• Appearance: These caterpillars resemble tiny jungle cats, boasting black bodies with vibrant yellow “leopard spots” and growing up to 5 cm long.
• Behavior: They feed voraciously in groups, targeting tender new cycad leaves.
• Life Cycle: Over winter, the pupae transform into moths, emerging in spring or summer. Females lay eggs on cycads, which hatch within days, unleashing a hungry army of caterpillars.
Why the Leopard Magpie Caterpillar is a Serious Threat
• Leaf Destruction: They can strip a cycad of its foliage, potentially killing the plant if left unchecked.
• Reproductive Damage: Female cone destruction reduces seed production, threatening cycad reproduction.
• Spread: These caterpillars are adventurers, moving from plant to plant and turning your garden into a battleground.
Since cycads only produce new growth two or three times a year, protecting the tender new leaves is essential. Any damage will remain visible until the fronds harden and can be trimmed, leaving your plant vulnerable and unsightly for months.
How to Defend Your Cycads
Natural Defenses
• Manual Removal: Inspect your plants early and pick off caterpillars by hand while they’re still small.
• Insecticidal Soap Spray: Ideal for young caterpillars. Be patient—it may take a few applications to eliminate them.
• Encourage Natural Predators: Birds and beneficial insects like lacewings find these caterpillars irresistible.
• Mesh Protection: Cover your cycads with mesh nets to prevent moths from laying eggs and caterpillars from accessing leaves.
Chemical Warfare (Use Sparingly)
• Insecticides: Choose products specifically labeled safe for cycads and follow instructions carefully.
• Regulatory Compliance: Check local guidelines on the use of insecticides for cycads.
• Eco-Friendly Approach: Avoid harming
beneficial insects or the environment by reserving this option for severe infestations.
With vigilance and the right tactics, you can protect your cycads from the Leopard Magpie Moth caterpillar and ensure they thrive with lush, beautiful foliage. Your plants will thank you!
A LESSON IN RESPONSIBILITY Respecting
Our Wildlife and Environment:
At Lombardy Estate, our unique environment and thriving wildlife are treasures that enhance the beauty and serenity of our community. However, incidents like the recent injury of one of our Egyptian geese remind us of the critical role each of us plays in protecting and respecting this ecosystem.
This goose endured unnecessary suffering after becoming entangled in a fishing spinning lure and fishing line that had been irresponsibly discarded. The line wrapped tightly around its legs, causing significant discomfort and injury over a prolonged period. Thankfully, with great effort, our HOA team was able to catch the bird, carefully remove the fishing line, and treat its wounds. We are pleased to report that the goose has been safely released and is expected to make a full recovery.
This incident underscores the importance of responsible behaviour when enjoying our communal spaces. To ensure the safety of our wildlife:
Dispose of fishing lines, lures, and other debris in proper waste containers.
Supervise children when fishing or playing near wildlife habitats, teaching them the importance of treating animals with care and respect.
Avoid leaving any items, including trash, in areas where they could harm animals or damage the environment.
Our estate is home to an array of birds, small mammals, and aquatic life that rely on us to maintain their habitat. Let this serve as a reminder to all residents that our actions, whether intentional or not, have a direct impact on the environment. By working together and encouraging responsible practices, we can ensure that Lombardy remains a haven for both its human and animal residents.
Thank you for your cooperation in preserving the beauty and integrity of our estate. Let’s protect what makes our community so special—for today and for generations to come.
Lombardy Estate’s thriving wildlife and serene environment are treasures we all share. Let’s take every step to protect them— because every act of care today shapes the beauty and harmony of our community for tomorrow.

Epiphytes
Epiphytes need sufficient humidity and the correct air temperature to grow.
The water requirements are met not only by rain but also by dew and mist. Those species found growing in the Peruvian desert do not receive any actual rain during the year, surviving only on the moisture they get from the mists coming in from the ocean and condensing on the leaves.
Epiphytic orchids store water in swollen stems, known as pseudobulbs, while in others, which do not produce these structures, the leaves function as water-storage organs. Epiphytic orchids are absent from the winter-rainfall areas but are frequently seen in forests in the summer rainfall area. The plants dislike prolonged wet conditions during their winter resting-period and require adequate moisture during their summer growingseason.
Ansellias, the largest of epiphytic orchids in South Africa is an entirely African genus. They are found in subtropical woodlands of Zululand and on the Transvaal lowveld.
Aechmae, Guzmania and Vriesea are flowering epiphytes sold by the pot plant industry. The potting mixture anchors the roots but watering and fertilizing should be applied to the centre reservoir of each plant. The mature plant will only produce one long-lasting flower. After flowering, pups (offsets) are formed around the base. After about a year the offsets can removed from the dying mother plant and re-potted. They will flower within a few years.
Tillandsia (airplants). The white stuff on the leaves is called trichomes, and exist on all air plants. It’s very important for air plants because it’s how they absorb water and nutrients. Take care not to damage it.
Species like Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneaides) are fast growers, usually requiring dappled shade in our suburban gardens and are not native to South Africa.
The old man’s beard lichen (Usnea longissima) found along the mist-belt is often confused with Spanish moss. This lichen is slow-growing and rare due to pollution and loss of habitat.
Staghorn ferns The plants need good air circulation and high light intensity, but not direct sun.
Water and nutrients are mostly absorbed through the leaves, while the roots serve an anchoring purpose. These roots are not sufficient to keep a mature plant in place and the plant have to be secured to the support by using some kind of fastening material. When new basal fronds are produced, they will hide the fastening material.
A very important part of Staghorn ferns (Platycerium bifurcatum) are the attached brown leaves or fronds that look like parchment.
Do not remove these as they protect the plant and store water and nutrients.
The tiny whitish-grey scales on the green fronds slows transpiration.
Some Epiphytes tolerate more extreme conditions. Choosing the correct species for your area is important. Many of them can be grown in a small space, horizontally or vertically and require very little attention.

S E A S O N … F E S T I V E !
BY DR VICKY LOUW (BVSC)
T h e H o l i d a y S e a s o n :
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebrations, and festivities, but it also brings with it an array of potential health risks for our pets. At our hospital, every year during the festive season, we see cases come in because of exposure to foodrelated hazards, and exposure to toxic decorations, and as always during this time of year, we see a lot of stress and anxiety cases. Being aware of these potential dangers can help ensure that your furry companions stay safe, healthy, and even festive with you throughout the season
Holiday Foods and Toxic Treats:
One of the biggest risks to pets during the holidays is the abundance of rich, festive foods. Many holiday foods that are perfectly safe for humans can be dangerous, or even deadly, to pets
Chocolate: Especially dark chocolate, contains theobromine, which can cause poisoning in pets. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures.
Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
• Onions and Garlic: These common holiday ingredients can cause gastrointestinal upset and damage to red blood cells, leading to anaemia in pets, particularly cats and dogs.
• Alcohol: Many pet owners enjoy festive drinks, but alcohol is highly toxic to animals, even in small quantities It can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulties, and even coma or death
• Xylitol (Sugar Alcohol): Commonly found in sugar-free gum, candies, and baked goods, xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, leading to seizures, liver failure, and potentially death.
Dietary Indiscretions:
During the holidays, it's tempting to indulge our pets with extra treats, but overfeeding can lead to weight gain, digestive upset, or pancreatitis—an extremely painful and potentially life-threatening condition caused by inflammation of the pancreas. Make sure to stick to your pet's regular feeding routine and avoid giving table scraps. Have specific, healthy treats available for guests to give to your pets to prevent them from feeling guilty and giving something from the table.
S t r e s s a n d A n x i e t y :
The holidays can be stressful for pets due to changes in routine, houseguests, loud noises from celebrations, and increased activity in the household Some pets may exhibit anxiety or behavioural changes such as excessive barking, hiding, or destructive behaviour.
Noise Stress: Fireworks, party noisemakers, or even the hustle and bustle of guests can be overwhelming for pets. Cats and dogs with noise phobia may become fearful, leading to hiding, shaking, or even attempts to escape the house
Separation Anxiety: If you're traveling or hosting family members, pets may feel stressed if their usual routine is disrupted. Some pets may experience separation anxiety, leading to destructive behaviour or house soiling.
Unfamiliar Guests and Crowds: Pets that are not used to large crowds or unfamiliar visitors can become anxious To reduce stress, create a quiet space for your pet where they can retreat and feel safe away from the commotion
Talk to your veterinarian about all the different stress relieving strategies you can implement as well as medicinal options, both natural and prescription medication are available.
Deadly Decorations and Gifts:
While festive decorations can add a magical touch to your home, many holiday decor items can be hazardous to pets
Christmas Tree: Tinsel, tree ornaments, and lights can pose a choking hazard or intestinal obstruction if ingested. Additionally, water in the tree stand may contain fertilizers or chemicals that could cause digestive upset if licked.
Poinsettias and Lilies: While these plants are often used for decoration, they are toxic to pets. Ingesting them can lead to symptoms like drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in severe cases, organ failure
Candles and Scented Oils: Pets can knock over candles, causing fires or burns Additionally, some essential oils and scented candles can be harmful to pets, especially cats. Always supervise pets around lit candles and avoid using certain oils that can irritate their respiratory systems.
• Toys with Small Parts: Toys with small parts or pieces that can break off are a risk for pets who love playing with toys and who might be tempted to ingest toys. This poses a risk of becoming what we call a foreign body obstruction which might need surgical removal or can even be fatal Be mindful of this when you have a pet at home which might be more inquisitive and more likely to play with children’s toys
• Chew Toys and Edible Treats: When giving your pet a Christmas present, be mindful of the ingredients in chew toys and edible treats. Some products, especially rawhide, can cause choking or digestive issues if not properly chewed. Always supervise your pet when they have a new toy or treat
Hot Weather Hazards:
In South Africa, our festive season is during our summer months. Hot weather, rain and thunder storms present unique risks for pets, especially for those with short noses, long coats and those who are prone to anxiety.
• Hyperthermia and Heat Stroke: In pets, particularly dogs and cats, the risk of overheating is compounded by their inability to regulate heat as efficiently as humans. Dogs only sweat through their paws and rely on panting to cool off, which is much less effective than sweating. Cats are also limited in their cooling mechanisms, relying on grooming and panting, but these can be insufficient during extremely hot conditions
• Dried up Water Sources: Evaporation of drinking water and subsequent dehydration can occur more quickly than you might think. If your pet is an outdoor dog or cat, ensure they have access to fresh, cool water at all times.
C o n c l u s i o n
By staying vigilant and taking some extra precautions, you can make sure that your pet enjoys the holiday season safely alongside you. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way From all of us at Akira Animal Hospital, we wish you and your furry companions a happy and healthy holiday season!
Wreath, Eat, Repeat...
Create a Festive Charcuterie Wreath for Your Holiday Table
Looking for a way to impress guests with a deliciously festive appetizer? This Christmas Charcuterie Wreath is not only visually stunning but also easy to assemble and filled with flavors everyone will enjoy. With a mix of savory meats, gourmet cheeses, seasonal fruits, and holidaythemed garnishes, it’s the perfect centerpiece for your holiday table.
Ingredients
• Cheeses: Small cubes or rounds of brie, cheddar, gouda, or your favorite festive cheeses
• Meats: Thinly sliced salami, prosciutto, and pepperoni
• Fruits: Grapes, cranberries, pomegranate arils, and apple or pear slices
• Veggies: Cherry tomatoes, mini bell peppers, and cucumber slices
• Garnishes: Fresh rosemary sprigs, thyme, or sage to form the wreath base
• Crackers: A mix of festive, shaped crackers for added crunch
• Extras: Marinated olives, nuts, and small holiday treats like chocolate-covered pretzels or candy canes for flair
Instructions
1. Arrange the Wreath Base: Lay rosemary sprigs in a circular shape on a large round platter or serving board. This forms the base of your “wreath”
2. Add Meats and Cheeses: Arrange meats and cheeses in clusters around the wreath. Roll the salami and prosciutto into small rosettes for a fancier look, and place them between the cheese clusters.
3. Incorporate Fruits and Veggies: Add grapes, cherry tomatoes, and apple or pear slices in open spots. Place cranberries and pomegranate arils in small bunches around the wreath to add a pop of holiday red.
4. Garnish for Festivity: Fill in any gaps with marinated olives, crackers, and small treats. The goal is to create a vibrant, full wreath that’s easy for guests to pick from.
5. Finishing Touches: Add a few sprigs of thyme or sage on top for added texture, and sprinkle some nuts for an extra layer of flavour.
Serving Tips
Serve with a variety of crackers or a fresh baguette, and consider a pairing with mulled wine or holiday cocktails to complete the festive vibe.
The Charcuterie Wreath combines classic holiday flavors with a stunning visual presentation, making it perfect for entertaining. Plus, it’s easy to customize with your favorite seasonal ingredients.

How to decorate a Tree like a Professional
Written by: Leani Botha
With these easy steps you can make your Christmas Tree look spectacular!!
The biggest tip to decorating a tree is to take your time!!
Follow these steps and you can’t go wrong!
1. Open up
• Take the tree out of the box: Secure the stand. Assemble the tree from the bottom upwards.
• Open up the branches: Take the branch and open each branchlet in a different direction. There may not be two branches stuck together. Work your way from the bottom upwards.
Tip 1: Use a rotating tree stand from Santa’s Warehouse to WOW every one and get a 360 view at your tree.
Tip 2: Take your time!! This step is the most important step of all even if it takes hours; make the tree look perfect even without decorations!
Here are more specific instructions of how to assemble the trees.
Hinged Christmas
Tree
• Unpack the Tree: Remove all parts from the box and ensure all sections are present.
• Assemble the Stand: Open and secure the tree stand. Place it in your desired location.
• Connect Sections: Insert the bottom section into the stand, then stack the middle and top sections, ensuring they click into place.
• Drop the Hinged Branches: Let the hinged branches fall naturally into position.
• Shape the Branches: Start at the bottom, fluffing each branch by separating the tips to create a full and balanced look.
• Final Touches: Shaping All the Branches
• Work methodically from the bottom to the top.
• Bend tips slightly upward for a natural look.
• Step back occasionally to adjust and ensure symmetry.
• Now your tree is ready for decorating!
1. Lights
• Start with your light: Make sure the lights are working before you put them up.
• Start from the tip of your tree (end with your plug at the bottom).
• Go around and around the tree with the lights. Make sure the lights are evenly spread. Don’t push the lights too far into the tree. Make sure each light is visible and not behind a branch.
• Now start to hide ALL the wires with the branches. Fold the branches over the wires, but make sure it is not in front of the lights.
Tip: As you go along putting up the lights, stand back and look if the lights are evenly spread out.
2. Décor
• When you start with your decorations, start with the biggest decorations first then go smaller decorations and baubles to fill the spaces.
• If you have ribbon or tinsel, they are first to go onto the tree.
• After the ribbons you start with your poinsettias and bigger décor items. When you put them in, stand back and see if they fill the perfect space. If not take the time to make it right.
• Use the smaller décor to fill the spaces in between.
• After each decoration is put on the tree, stand back and make sure it is on the perfect spot
• All the decorations must be evenly spread.
Tip: Make sure there are no open gaps that all the décor are evenly spread out.
3. Tree topper
Put your tree topper on the tip of the tree, use a couple of branches to keep it steady.
Tip: If the tree topper is too heavy, fasten a dowel stick to the base of the tree topper and then fasten it to the tree with cable ties.

Turn Your Kruger Safari into a
Wildly
If you’re picturing vast savannas, golden sunsets, and the heart-pounding thrill of encountering lions, elephants, and other majestic wildlife up close, then Kruger National Park is where you want to be. Here’s a guide to help you plan the adventure of a lifetime.
1. Choose the Right Season for Your Safari
One of the first things to consider is timing. Every season in Kruger has its own special appeal. Winter (May to August) is prime for wildlife spotting since animals tend to gather at waterholes, and the dry terrain makes them easier to see. Summer (November to February), on the other hand, is lush and alive, with newborn animals and vibrant birdlife—a dream for photographers and nature lovers alike. Think about what excites you most, and plan your timing around that!
2. Embrace the Journey with Some Road Prep
Kruger is vast, so expect plenty of road time to truly explore it. The drive from Johannesburg is about 4-5 hours, so be sure to bring snacks! For the perfect onthe-go options, check out The Trail Food Company for delicious and convenient snacks that are ideal for long trips. Once inside the park, you might cover as much as 200 km daily if you want to experience different areas. Trust me, packing a cooler with water, snacks from The Trail Food Company, and maybe a great playlist or podcast will make these drives feel like part of the adventure.
3. Smart Packing for Safari Success
Packing smart for a safari can really enhance your experience. Besides the basics, consider bringing along some extras that make a difference. A good pair of binoculars—like these from Karoo Outdoor Vortex Triumph® HD 10X42 —will help you spot distant wildlife. A power bank can be a lifesaver during power outages at camps, and don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent. You’ll be grateful you have them!
4. Dress for Kruger’s All-Day Weather Swings
Kruger mornings and evenings can be chilly, while midday brings the heat. Layers are key—think a light jacket for those early drives and breathable cotton clothes for the afternoons. Go for neutral colours; they help you blend in and keep bugs at bay!
5.
Plan Your Route to See Your Highlights
Deciding where to explore is one of the most exciting parts of planning. The south of Kruger is bustling with big cats and other wildlife, while the north is quieter, ideal for bird lovers. Think about what interests you most and map out a route that hits your must-see spots.
6. Find the Perfect Place to Stay
Where you stay can truly enhance your Kruger experience. Here are a few standout options to match different travel styles:
Luxury Lodges: Kruger National Park is home to a selection of exceptional lodges, each offering its own distinct luxury safari experience. At Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, guests find unmatched comfort and privacy, with private plunge pools, dedicated butler service, and a rare wine collection in an underground cellar—an ideal retreat after a day on safari.
In the Greater Kruger, Safari Moon Lodge combines refined elegance with eco-friendly principles. Here, guests enjoy private game drives, guided bush walks, and gourmet dining — a perfect choice for those who appreciate nature and luxury in harmony.
For a truly secluded experience, Fifty-Five Mjejane Lodge, located in the serene Mjejane Game Reserve on the Crocodile River, offers a private retreat just for you and your guests. This exclusive lodge allows you to encounter the Big Five in a beautiful, undisturbed setting—ideal for those seeking intimacy and adventure in equal measure.
A Riverfront Gem in Marloth Park: Located in Marloth Park, Kruger Private Lodge is a stunning 7-bedroom retreat on the Crocodile River, where wildlife and birds roam freely. With four river-view rooms, three gardenview rooms, two river decks, and a boma for sunsets and stargazing, it’s a perfect escape. Visit Kruger Private Lodge for an unforgettable bush experience.
While marveling at wildlife freely roaming near the river, you can also experience something special by feeding Marloth Park’s own wildlife right at the back door—a unique touch for nature lovers seeking an immersive bush experience.
Private Game Reserves: Right next to Kruger are private reserves like Sabi Sand, where unfenced borders allow wildlife to roam freely between the park and reserves. These reserves offer exclusive experiences with smaller groups and more secluded safari
moments—perfect for spotting Kruger’s Big Five.
Self Catering: Travelers looking for flexibility and budget-friendly options, Kruger’s rest camps are a top choice for self-catering stays. Camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, and Satara offer fullyequipped kitchens, braai areas, and nearby grocery stores, making them ideal for families, groups, or anyone who enjoys cooking their own meals on safari. Staying right inside the park also means you’ll have easy access to morning and evening drives for the full Kruger experience.
If camping is on your agenda, Pretoria Caravans & Outdoor has a broad selection of campers, caravans, and outdoor gear to complete your adventure.
For more details on Kruger rest camps, look into Kruger Rest Camps.
No matter your preference—whether for luxury, seclusion, or a flexible, budget-friendly stay—each of these accommodations offers a unique way to immerse yourself in the Kruger experience.
7. Rise and Shine for Incredible Sightings
In Kruger, early mornings and late afternoons are magical. The cooler temperatures mean animals like lions and leopards are more active. Enter the park as soon as it opens to catch them on the move! Special Experiences to Enrich
Your Safari Kruger offers more than just sightings from your vehicle. Here are some experiences that bring you even closer to the wild:
Guided Bush Walks: Step into the heart of the wild with a guided bush walk! These immersive three-hour excursions led by seasoned guides take you far off the beaten path, giving you the rare chance to track wildlife up close, explore unusual plants, and uncover Kruger’s hidden wonders. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that few get to enjoy, and if you’re up for a two- to threehour walk, this adventure is an absolute must.
Bird Watching: With over 500 species, Kruger is a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
Some lodges offer special birdwatching tours, making it easy to see everything from colourful rollers to the mighty African fish eagle.
Night Drives: See Kruger’s nocturnal wildlife come to life. Led by expert rangers, these night drives let you spot animals like hyenas, leopards, and owls under the stars.
Photography Tours: Capture Kruger’s beauty with guided photography tours designed for all skill levels. Professional guides help you find the best lighting, angles, and spots to snap unforgettable shots.
