Know your
trees
Article by Elize Malan
Arbor week early in September is initiated by DAFF and two different species are chosen every year to increase our general knowledge of indigenous trees and promote their planting.
The trees for 2024 are the following:
Searsia Iancea, Black Karee / Searsia leptodictya, Mountain Karee
They are medium-sized low branching trees with attractive round canopies. Usually grow to a height of 7 to 8 m but can be larger under favourable conditions.
A Black Kare is evergreen and has long thinnish hairless dark green leaves. It is a fast grower and tolerant to drought and cold.
Leaves of the Mountain Karee are wider and shorter. The real difference is that the tree is deciduous and only semi frost hardy.
GARDENING
Sweetly scented flowers are produced by both species from June until September, which attract bees and other insects.
The fruit is a popular food source for birds.
Searsia lancea is useful in providing natural soil stabilization and increasing infiltration of rainwater into the soil, thus reducing erosion and raising the ground water table.
Game animals such as kudu, roan antelope and sable browse the leaves of the tree which can serve as an important food source for them in times of drought.
The density of the plant makes it suitable for use as a screen or barrier against wind, noise, or to provide privacy.
Apodytes dimidiata subsp. dimidiata, Whitepear
This tree is good choice for the home garden as it is a small, only 4 to 5 metres tall, evergreen, with a neat well-rounded crown. Young plants are relatively slow growing, but growth rate improves when established. It can be planted near the house, and will not disturb the foundations or paved areas.
This is a small bushy tree. Prune off the lower branches and it will make a beautiful single stemmed speciman.
Apodytes dimidiata forms sprays of scented white flowers, that are borne in summer, followed by attractive berries in mid to late summer.
The red aril of the fruits will attract a variety of birds including Blackeyed Bulbul, Rameron Pigeon, Redwinged and Glossy Starlings, Guinea Fowl and Pied Barbets.
The plant can be used as a hedge or screening plant and is suitable to be planted in areas next to the swimming pool. The fruits are not fleshy and therefore cause no mess on paved areas.
The white pear thrives in well-drained, compost-rich soil and needs regular irrigation.
It is mostly endemic to KZN and Limpopo and small trees need to be protected against frost.
Given the correct soil and climate conditions the Whitepear is a beautiful tree to plant. The Black Karee can be messy but it is still an excellent choice for Gauteng gardens.

Stay calm, help your pet stay calm, but act fast. If your pet can still breathe, try to keep them calm and immediately seek veterinary care.
If possible, and without getting hurt, open your pet’s mouth. Look inside your pet’s mouth for foreign objects
IF you see an object, you can try to remove it. This is easier done with two people. Gently open your pet’s mouth using two hands. The object can be removed either with your fingers OR by using the flat side of a spoon to pull it closer. Please be careful not to push the object further down. When the object can’t be removed: It's time to make use of the law of gravity or to do the Heimlich
Small dogs and cats: gently pick up your pet by their thighs and swing them in the air from side to side. If that doesn’t help to dislodge the object, apply forward pressure to the pet’s abdomen just behind the rib cage
For larger dogs: Try the Heimlich manoeuvre. If your large dog is standing, place your arms around their belly, just like you would a person, and make a fist with your hands. Place your fist on the soft spot under their ribcage, then push up and forward.
Seek veterinary care when you fail to dislodge the object or when your pet is not able to breathe. Check the lips and tongue for blue-tinge.
Stay calm but act fast. Open your pet’s mouth, gently grasp the tongue, and pull it forward so the tongue is outside the mouth and the airways are open.. Quickly check for airway obstruction. If there is a foreign body obstructing the airway, remove it as described above. If the airway is open, perform rescue breathing . There are many videos online that help explain rescue breathing The basics are: Hold your pet’s mouth closed with your hand and breathe directly into their nose until you see their chest expand. Once the chest expands, continue providing 10-20 rescue breaths per minute until your pet is breathing on their own or you arrive at the closest veterinary hospital.
It is important to take your pet to the vet as soon as possible.
DO CPR For detailed images and a video, please visit: https://www pdsa org uk/pethelp-and-advice/pet-health-hub/otherveterinary-advice/cpr-for-dogs-and-puppies Start with rescue breathing as described for non-breathing pets, then begin chest compressions.
Chest compressions:
Position your pet:
For cats and most dogs: put your pet on one side.
For barrel-chested dogs: (like English Bulldogs and even certain lines of Staffies), lay them on their back and place your hands on their breastbone.
Position yourself:
WELLNESS
For small dogs and cats: Wrap your dominant hand around their chest with your thumb on top, and your other four fingers underneath. Keep your other hand behind their back to stop them from moving Then, squeeze the chest between your thumb and fingers at 100-120 times per minute (i.e. to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”)
For medium to large breed dogs: Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, over the widest point of the chest, then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked.
For deep-/keel chested breed dogs (Greyhounds, Great Danes): Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, directly over the location of the heart, then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked. For flat-/barrel chested breed dogs (Bulldogs): Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, directly over the midpoint of their chest Remember they should lay on their backs (see image), then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked.
Other important notes:
Aim to compress the chest cavity by about one-third of its total width. If you’re alone, alternate chest compressions with rescue breaths. Perform 30 chest compressions, stop to give two rescue breaths Repeat If you have help, one person can give chest compressions and the other can give 10 rescue breaths per minute Continue until you can hear and/or feel a heartbeat and your pet is breathing regularly, or you have arrived at the l t t i h it l d th
Environmental management:
The aim is to give your pet a sense of security and also to reduce the intensity of the noise.
Provide your pet with a “safe space”. This area should be associated with relaxation and positive experiences before the noise event occurs. So, it requires a bit of light training beforehand.
If possible, it helps to make the safe space in a windowless room to block out visual stimuli and make the sound less audible. Sound can be masked by a loud fan or calming music with repetitive drumbeats.
Animal Behaviour:
Attention or food rewards during these loud noise events was previously believed to reinforce fear However, fear is an emotion and not an operant behaviour. Rewards can help elicit positive emotions which might help change the unwanted behaviour. It is recommended to offer high-value treats and to give contact only when your pet seeks it out on their own accord - unsolicited touching or holding could increase stress further.
Try to distract your pet from the noise by playing with them, asking them to perform simple tasks and motivate them with high value treats/toys. Refusing to eat is a sign of severe stress. If your pet refuses highvalue food, anxiolytic medication might be indicated.
Medication:
There are many natural as well as prescription treatments to consider. It is best to have a consultation with your veterinarian to discuss all the options and to tailor treatment specific to your pet’s needs Because of all the options and individual pet’s response to treatment, it's usually advised to have a treatment trial before the stressful event, like New Year’s Eve fireworks, occurs.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP
in our community
As members of our Homeowners Association, we all share the responsibility of maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of our common areas. One ongoing issue we face is the problem of dogs defecating in these spaces without their owners cleaning up afterward.
It’s essential to remember that our common areas, including parks and pathways, are meant for everyone to enjoy. When dog owners neglect to pick up after their pets, it not only creates an unpleasant environment but can also pose health risks to other residents and pets.
To ensure a pleasant experience for all, we kindly remind all dog owners to adhere to the following guidelines:
• Keep Dogs on a Leash: All dogs must be kept on a leash when walked in the estate. This ensures safety for your pet and others around you.
• Clean Up After Your Dog: Owners are expected to promptly remove their dog’s waste from common areas. Carrying waste bags during walks is a simple and effective way to keep our community clean.
• Respect Shared Spaces: By taking these small steps, we can ensure that our parks and pathways remain enjoyable for everyone, fostering a sense of community pride.
Let’s work together to keep our shared spaces clean and welcoming. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
Big Ideas for Your Small Bathroom
Got a small bathroom? No problem! With the right design tricks, you can maximize every square inch, turning it into a chic, functional space that feels much larger than it really is. Let’s dive into some fun, practical ways to make your tiny bathroom feel grand!
1. Tiny Fixtures, Big Impact
Just because your bathroom is small doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style. Wallmounted toilets are a lifesaver when it comes to freeing up floor space—by tucking the tank inside the wall, they create a clean, sleek look. Pair that with a pedestal sink for a classic, elegant feel that doesn’t hog room. Love showers? Corner and frameless showers fit snugly into your space, offering style without overwhelming the layout. These compact fixtures deliver huge style points!
2. Float Your Storage!
One of the easiest ways to make a small bathroom feel larger is to free up floor space. Enter floating vanities! Not only do they provide much-needed storage for all your essentials, but they also create an airy, open feeling. You’ll wonder how your bathroom ever felt cramped! For even more storage, add recessed shelves into your shower or walls. These built-ins are perfect for tucking away toiletries and keeping the bathroom clutter-free.
3. Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
The magic of mirrors in small spaces cannot be overstated! A large mirror above the vanity will reflect light and instantly make the room feel bigger. If you want to go the extra mile, consider adding a mirrored cabinet for even more storage without taking up additional room. Light, neutral colors like soft whites, greys, or beiges also help to brighten things up, making the space feel expansive. Don’t forget to throw in some subtle patterns—like herringbone tiles or a soft floral wallpaper—to add depth without clutter.
4. Go Vertical, Baby!
When floor space is limited, it’s time to think up! Vertical storage is your secret weapon in a small bathroom. Install tall, narrow cabinets that reach toward the ceiling, giving you plenty of storage for towels and toiletries without crowding the room. Use hooks or racks higher on the walls for items like towels or robes, freeing up floor space while keeping everything within easy reach.
5. Light It Right
Layering lighting is key to making any bathroom feel inviting and open. Start with some bright overhead lights to illuminate the entire space, then add task lighting around the vanity for makeup or shaving. For an added touch of luxury, use accent lighting under your floating vanity or shelves—this will add depth to the room and make it feel bigger. Bright bathrooms are happy bathrooms!
6. Tough Stuff for Steamy Spaces
Bathrooms get humid fast, so it’s crucial to pick materials that can handle the heat and moisture while staying stylish. Porcelain tiles are a go-to choice for floors and walls because they’re durable, easy to clean, and come in endless styles. For countertops, go with quartz—not only is it beautiful, but it’s also scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, and low-maintenance. You can leave your curling iron on it without worry! Vinyl flooring is another great option—it’s moisture-resistant and can mimic the look of high-end materials like wood or stone.
7. Add Some Personality
Small spaces don’t have to be boring! Add a touch of your own style with fun accessories that make the room feel personal. Statement light fixtures can elevate the entire space—think a bold pendant light or an eye-catching sconce. Add a piece of artwork that makes you smile every time you enter the room. Finally, luxe accessories like a sleek soap dispenser or a set of plush towels can give your bathroom that five-star hotel feel.
A tiny bathroom might seem like a design challenge, but it’s actually an opportunity to get creative! With the right fixtures, lighting, and storage solutions, you can make the most of every square inch. Embrace floating vanities, large mirrors, and vertical storage to open up the space. Choose durable materials like porcelain and quartz to withstand the bathroom’s humid conditions, and don’t forget to add a splash of personality with statement accessories. With these big ideas, your small bathroom will become a stylish, functional retreat!
spring clean YOUR COMPLEXION
The Spring season brings with it all sorts of opportunities to turn over a new leaf and apply an “out with the old, in with the new” approach to all sort of areas of your life – from your wardrobe and your home to your skin care, too.
‘Tis the season to talk about peeling, the good kind! At Skin Renewal, the start of September signals the start of superficial peel season; just the gap you need to get your skin summerready before the summer sun shows up in all its long-awaited glory. Whereas the Winter
months are for the more intense “peeling like a snake” peels that come with a bit of downtime, the first month or two of Spring are for the peels that you can pop in to slot into a lunchbreak and hop onto a video call, with the camera on, a couple of hours later.
WHAT IS A SUPERFICIAL CHEMICAL PEEL?
Ideal for maintenance or as an introductory treatment and the gentlest form of chemical peels, superficial peel treatments use mild acids such as AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or Glycolic Acid, BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) or Salicylic Acid, among others, to non-invasively remove only the outermost layer of the epidermis with minimal recovery time.
From soothing inflammation to treating the signs of ageing and sun damage, from reducing fine lines and wrinkles to addressing uneven skin tone and texture, superficial peels are safe for almost all skin types and tones but are not recommended for those with active skin infections, open wounds, or recent sunburns. Those with darker skins should also do their homework before booking a peel of any kind, as their skin type runs the risk of experiencing post-peel hypopigmentation.
To peel or not to peel?
The answer is a question of what your skin needs. We offer a wide range of options in the area of superficial peels, as well as alternatives such as microdermabrasion for those who don’t feel comfortable going the chemical peel route.
AZELAIC PEEL
A low pH combination peel, containing Azelaic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid and Arnica. The unique formulation ensures that all the main signs and symptoms of acne are targeted, namely oiliness, congestion, breakouts, PIH and inflammation.
GLUTATHIONE PEEL
The potent antioxidant properties of glutathione target pigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone, revealing a more even, youthful glow, and reducing the appearance of medium to deep wrinkles.
MCCM LIFTING PEEL
Made of Lactic Acid and DMAE, this peel moisturises and refreshes mature, dry skin, softening fine lines and rough texture. It also stimulates cell renewal and provides a lifting effect.
MCCM FLASH PEEL
This gentle peel, consisting of Lactic Acid, Allantoin, and Agireline, is ideal for dry skin and upcoming events.
PYRUVIC (20%) PEEL
Pyruvic Acid addresses mature skin with fine lines and wrinkles, as well as scars and acne scars.
GLYCOLIC PEEL 70% (FOR BODY)
As Glycolic Acid 70% is ideal for acne, rough texture and pigmentation on the body, this peel reduces the appearance of acne scars, deep lines and wrinkles, and photo-ageing.
WHAT MAKES A SUPERFICIAL PEEL AT SKIN RENEWAL DIFFERENT?
The Skin Renewal approach, whatever your skin and body goals are, is always a holistic one. This means that a peel treatment is not just a peel. Depending on your concerns and goals, our Doctors and medically-trained therapists ensure that your time in the treatment room is well spent – incorporating add-ons such as laser genesis, one of four meso infusions (Vit C, HA, Brightening & Clarifying) and serums (which can be combined with transdermal mesotherapy) to optimise patients’ results.
Some of the serums that can be included to your superficial peel treatment include HA serum, Growth Factor serum and the much buzzed about Tranexamic Acid, which is becoming much talked about within aesthetics circles given its versatility and efficacy; from reducing melanin production and treating hyperpigmentation to brightening skin while delivering on impressive antiinflammatory promises.
The truth of the matter is, the only thing “superficial” about a superficial peel is the term for it. Making a Spring peel –or a series of Winter-through-Spring peels – part of your skincare regime is a gamechanger.

Of Fermented Foods & Drinks
Benefits
Fermented foods and drinks have stood the test of time, with a history dating back thousands of years. This ancient practice is now being rediscovered for its wide array of health benefits, thanks to the beneficial bacteria and yeast involved in the fermentation process. At the core of fermentation lies the cultivation of beneficial microorganisms, which not only enhance the flavor and texture of foods but also transform them into nutritional powerhouses. These probiotics—live beneficial bacteria— populate the gut, contributing to a balanced microbiome. Popular fermented
foods such as yoghurt, amasi, kimchi, and sauerkraut are rich in probiotics, which aid in digestion, boost immune function, and support overall gut health. As research increasingly highlights the importance of gut health, these foods offer a practical way to improve well-being.
Unlocking Nutrients and Reducing Digestive Discomfort
Fermentation has the unique ability to enhance the bioavailability of nutrients, making them easier for the body to absorb and use. By breaking down complex compounds, fermentation allows for better absorption of key nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. For example, the fermentation of grains and legumes, like those found in products such as mageu, reduces levels of antinutrients like phytic
acid, which can otherwise inhibit the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. This not only increases the nutritional value of these foods but also minimizes digestive discomfort that may arise from unfermented versions.
Boosting Immunity and Fighting Inflammation
Beyond gut health, fermented foods also play a role in boosting immunity. The probiotics introduced through fermentation help diversify gut bacteria, which is essential for a well-functioning immune system. Moreover, fermentation often produces beneficial by-products like short-chain fatty acids, antioxidants, and bioactive peptides. These compounds have been shown to exert antiinflammatory and antimicrobial effects, contributing to overall resilience and vitality.
An Affordable and Accessible Superfood
For those looking to improve their diet on a budget, fermented foods are an affordable option. Easy to prepare at home and widely available in stores, these foods provide a cost-effective way to boost health. Incorporating locally made products such as amasi and mageu can be a great step toward maintaining both gut and immune health.
Consult a Professional
While fermented foods offer numerous health benefits, it’s important to remember that they are not a cure for any medical condition. If you have specific health concerns or digestive issues, it’s recommended to consult your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your diet. Fermented foods should be
viewed as a supplement to a balanced lifestyle, not a replacement for medical treatments.
Whether you’re looking to improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, or support your immune system, incorporating fermented foods and drinks into your diet can deliver a host of benefits.

Get Your Daily Dose of Sunshine
We’ve all heard the phrase “get some sunshine!” but did you know that sunshine is more than just a mood booster? It’s also the key to your body’s natural production of vitamin D, a super important nutrient for your bones, immune system, and even your mental health! Living in sunny South Africa, it’s easy to think we’re all swimming in vitamin D, but that’s not always the case. Let’s dive into why your vitamin D levels still matter, even if you’re soaking up those South African rays!.
Vitamin D: The Sunshine Superstar
Vitamin D is like a backstage hero in your body. You can’t see it, but it’s working hard behind the scenes to:
1. Build strong bones: Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium so you can stay sturdy and strong.
2. Power up your immune system: It’s your first line of defense against those pesky colds and flu bugs.
3. Keep you smiling: Studies show it helps with mood regulation and might even help fight off the blues.
4. Support muscle strength: Yep, vitamin D helps keep your muscles working smoothly, so no unexpected wobbles!
But Wait… We Live in Sunny South Africa!
True, we’re blessed with sunshine, beaches, and outdoor adventures, but that doesn’t always mean we’re getting enough vitamin D. Why? Well, modern life is a bit more “desk and screen” than “beach and sun” these days.
Here’s why you might still be missing out:
• Indoor life: Office life, Netflix binges, and school runs – sound familiar? Most of us spend the majority of our day inside, away from the sun.
• Sunblock city: We’re doing a great job protecting our skin from sun damage with SPF (yay for fewer sunburns!), but sunblock also blocks the UVB rays your skin needs to make vitamin D.
• Your skin tone matters: People with darker skin have more melanin, which is amazing for natural sun protection but slows down vitamin D production. So, you might need a bit more sun to get your daily dose.
How Much Sun is “Just Right”?
Ah, the golden question – how much sun is enough to keep your vitamin D levels in check without turning into a lobster? It’s a balancing act, but here’s a fun rule of thumb:
• 10 to 30 minutes of midday sunshine a few times a week (depending on your skin tone) on your arms, legs, or face should do the trick! Midday is when the sun is at its prime for vitamin D production.
• Don’t forget the sunscreen! After you’ve soaked in your 10-30 minutes of rays, slap on that SPF 30+ to protect your skin from burns and long-term damage.
• More sunshine in winter: If it’s colder and you’re bundled up, or if you’ve got a darker skin tone, you might need a little extra time in the sun to hit your vitamin D goals.
Why Checking Your Levels is So Important
Even with all that glorious South African sunshine, it’s still possible to be low on vitamin D. That’s why it’s a great idea to get your levels checked with a quick and easy blood test – especially if you’re feeling tired, achy, or catching colds more often than usual.
Low vitamin D levels can lead
to:
• Weaker bones and risk of fractures (ouch!).
• A sluggish immune system that lets every bug knock you down.
• Mood swings and fatigue that just won’t quit.
Living in a sunny country doesn’t automatically mean we’re getting all the vitamin D we need. Whether you’re an indoor enthusiast or a sunlover with sunblock always on hand, it’s important to get a little sun, check your levels, and keep things balanced. So next time you step outside, remember: a little bit of sunshine goes a long way –just don’t forget the SPF after your daily dose! Stay SunSavvy!
