from the
Dear Residents, In an attempt to minimise the spread of the Corona Virus, and to save lives, our estate, like the rest of the country, is currently in lockdown. Amidst the many confusing and contradictory messages that were doing the rounds, specifically regarding private estates, the HOA sought guidance directly from the SAPS. On receipt of this advice the HOA made the difficult decision of prohibiting any form of activity (walking, jogging, cycling etc.) within the Estate, inclusive of the reserve area. We again appeal to all residents to please adhere to these rules that we were requested by president Cyril Ramaphosa to implement. We want every member of our community to be alive and well at the end of the lockdown and to continue enjoying everything that our beautiful estate has to offer. You have probably heard or received a lot of advice on precautionary measures against the Corona Virus however, given the importance of exercising basic precautions it will be amiss of us not to take this opportunity to highlight these again:
Wash your hands frequently Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands. Maintain social distancing Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the Virus. If you are too close, you can breathe the droplets in, and if the person coughing has the disease, this will cause you to breathe in the Virus too. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
Practice respiratory hygiene Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose BASIC PROTECTIVE of the used tissue immediately. Why? Droplets spread the Virus. By following good respiratory MEASURES AGAINST THE hygiene you can protect the people around you COVID-19 from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19. We hope that everyone is keeping safe during this troubling time and in doing so also assist us in keeping the community safe.
Do not allow your child to drive your vehicle if they do not have a driver’s license. We realised this is a trend after we investigated some of the speeding incidents in the Estate. We are very happy to report that two arrests in connection with theft on construction sites were made. We had a perimeter breach and an arrest was made. Many owners and tenants reacted positively to our request to register their gardeners and domestic workers. For this, we thank you.

BUILDING tips
During autumn, it is always wise to look at extra ways to boost our immune systems before the “cold and flu” season arrives in winter. Due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, immune building is even more pressing. A strong immune system can not What can you do? prevent us from contracting the virus, but it 1.Eat well. could assist us with recovery. Boosting an immune system isn’t a quick fix unfortunately, because it isn’t one thing. It is an entire system that needs to work together in balance and harmony.
Make sure you eat balanced meals. It is essential to consume your five-a-day (fresh fruits and veggies) as these will provide you with the necessary vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, Magnesium, Fibre, Iron, Zinc, B Vitamins, Folate, Vitamin A, Selenium and Glutathione (to highlight a few) your body needs to fight inflammation, produce white blood cells and generally help you keep your body “fighting fit”. Try eating various colours of fruits and vegetables. Some of the great ones to include in your diet is spinach, broccoli, oranges, red peppers, garlic, bananas, ginger, sweet potato etc. Fermented and pre- and probiotic foods are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of gut flora. Include kefir, miso, kimchi and yoghurt into your daily diet where possible. Did you know? Vitamin C is water soluble, which means your body doesn’t store any of it. That is why it is essential to maintain adequate levels every day. THE HI LLS E STATE | 2 0 2 0 | I SSUE 2 | 17

2. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise has multiple health benefits. It is good for your heart health, it lowers blood pressure, controls body weight, blood circulation and reduces stress. All of these are beneficial to creating a body that is in balance and harmony, which means it will be beneficial to your immune system.
Eating well and exercising regularly have direct and positive effects on our sleep patterns. This goes to show how building a strong immune system is a marathon and not a sprint. Every small lifestyle choice has an effect on the greater whole.

FIVE TIPS TO TURNING YOUR BEDROOM INTO A NONTOXIC HAVEN
Organic Natural Bedding Bedding such as sheets, duvets, throws and pillows made from organic natural fibres such as bamboo, Tencel ® , wool, cotton, buckwheat, silk, hemp etc. might cost you more but they will last longer and won’t release any toxins in the room. The natural tones and textures of organic natural fibres blend together beautifully, creating a pleasant tranquil space for all your senses to enjoy. Look out for eco-labels and certifications.
When we decorate, the tiny details of a bedroom are often overlooked. Which makes sense because we are literally asleep most of the time and don’t mentally connect with our surroundings all that well. We select pretty, comfortable bedding and eye-catching decor pieces and believe our work is done. But what we don’t see are all the toxic fumes we breathe in at night...
Take on a Minimalistic or Vintage Decor Approach The shift toward leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle is something that should directly affect our day to day purchases. Think about it, every decor item you have ever bought is still on this planet somewhere...Taking on a minimalistic approach to decor is definitely a good idea because minimalists invest in fewer pieces but opt for better quality, artisan or hand-made items that are built to last. Another route that is also effective is to recycle, re-use and reupholster old, vintage pieces to give them new life.
Use Natural Air Purifying & Essential Oils Use nature’s air purifying plants like Peace Lilies and Snake Plants (Mother-in-law’s Tongue) to filter the air in your bedroom naturally. YOGA TO
sleep
By Kristel Crevits from EonYoga, a studio offering multiple classes and styles in Pretoria. www.eonygoga.com
Practising these five yoga poses before bedtime will relax and calm you, helping to prepare your body for sleep. Do you struggle to fall asleep or find it difficult to sleep peacefully? Sleep deprivation could lead to more than just a case of the yawns. It can cause depression, weight gain and even Type 2 Diabetes. Experts recommend an average of six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep nightly, and this is where yoga can help. The soothing practice will help lower stress levels, calm the mind and relieve tension in the body. Rather than feeling hopeless about sleeping issues, try these five easy prebedtime yoga poses for a goodnight’s rest and to improve the quality of your sleep. BEDTIME ROUTINE ‘Yoga connects you with your breathing, and this stimulates the nervous system,’ says Eon Swiegers, yoga teacher, trainer and founder of EonYoga. Try to hold each of these five poses for three to five breaths. If you can’t manage the full sequence, simply do what you can, holding each position gently without strain or pain. Listen to your body, breathe deeply and ease more deeply into each posture with each exhale. This will elongate your stretch and release the tension in your body. Stretching has a calming effect, as it stimulates blood flow and slows the heart rate. LET’S GET STARTED In preparation, sit in a comfortable position with your knees folded and your back straight (use the wall for support if needed). Rest your hands on your legs. Close your eyes and take five deep breaths. Focus on the cold air entering your nostrils and filling your lungs, and the warm air exhaling through the nose. 26This | ISSUE 2 | less 2 0 2than 0 | TaHminute. E H I L L S E STAT E will take
1. JANU SIRSASANA (HEAD-TO-KNEE POSE) Sit on the floor with your back straight and your legs extended in front of you (use the wall for support if needed). Keep your knees bent if necessary to keep your spine from rounding. Bend the right knee, bringing the base of the right foot into the inner left thigh and letting the right knee flop sideways towards the floor. If the knee doesn’t touch, support it with a pillow. Inhale and lengthen the spine. TIP: If you have tight hamstrings, place a folded blanket or pillow under your sitting bones. 2. BADDHA KONASANA (BOUND ANGLE POSE) Sit on the floor with your back straight and bring the base of both feet together as close as possible to your groin, letting your knees splay out into a diamond shape. Direct your hands towards your feet or ankles (depending on your flexibility). Be comfortable in this position and avoid rounding the lower back. Inhale and lengthen the spine. Exhale and bend forward from the hips, keeping your spine as straight as possible. Breathe in slowly, and ease into the stretch with every exhale. Feel your muscles relaxing and lengthening. TIP: Listen to your body and ease into the pose. Sitting on a blanket or pillow will help tight muscles open up. 3. SUPTA MATSYENDRASANA (RECLINED SPINAL SWIST) Re-align yourself by lying with your back on the floor and bringing both knees to the chest. Extend your left arm to the left side at shoulder height, with the palm facing up. With your knees still at your chest, slowly push both to the right with your right hand, until they reach the floor. Leave your right hand on top of the knee and gaze at your left hand. With every exhale, use the right hand to stroke the outer left leg from the hip to the knee. This will help deepen the stretch and align your spine. Hold for three to five breaths. Repeat on the other side. TIP: Listen to your body and ease into the pose. Sitting on a blanket or pillow will help tight muscles open up. 4. JATHARA PARIVARTANASANA (THREAD-THE-NEEDLE) Lie flat on your back, placing your feet on the floor with your knees bent. Bring your right knee towards your chest, placing the right ankle on top of the left knee. Let the right knee flop to the right. Flex your right foot to keep the muscles engaged. Interlace your hands behind the left knee and lift your foot off the floor, bringing the knee towards the chest. You should feel a stretch on the outside of your right butt cheek. Breathe deeply and slowly focus on keeping both hips in line with each other. Hold for three to five breaths. Repeat on the other side. 5. VIPARITA KARANI (LEGS-UP-THE-WALL POSE) Put your butt as close to the wall as possible. Extend your legs straight up the wall, bringing your toes down so they are pointing towards the knees. This allows blood to flow to the heart, which soothes and releases stress. *Flop your arms open along your sides, with your palms facing up. You may also extend them behind your head to open your chest and release pent-up emotions. *Close your eyes and breathe as you relax into the pose and clear your mind. Feel the cold air entering and the warm air exiting the body with every breath. TIP: Place a pillow underneath your lower back for support. Bring the buttocks further away from the wall to relieve tight hamstrings. Once you have finished this routine, go to bed straight away and keep your calm disposition intact.

Indigenous Plant of The Month: Portulacaria afra
(Spekboom) Also referred to as elephant bush, dwarf jade plant and porkbush, the Spekboom has gained “celebrity status in the plant-world over the past several months due to its carbon sequestering powers. Being 10 times more effective per hectare than the Amazon rainforest at removing carbon from the air, we thought it fitting to make Spekboom our first focus plant. 30 | ISSUE 2 | 2 0 2 0 | T H E H I L L S E STAT E
Interesting facts about the Spekboom:
THE | GARDENING
Once rooted, it is drought-resistant. It makes great indoor plants in areas with bright light (proper drainage is essential, water every 2 weeks). This species is also ideal as Bonsai plants. As a perennial succulent Spekboom stem clippings can be potted or planted directly into the ground to form a new plant. When planted in the ground Spekboom can grow between 2.5m and 4.5 m in height. Spekboom will root in sand as well. It binds soil and can therefore prevent soil erosion. This plant can be planted outside in full sun or in semi-shade. Under the right circumstances some of the variants of this plant could sprout tiny pink or white flowers. Leaves are edible to goats and elephants but also humans. It has a lemony, tart taste that works well in soups and salads.
There are several different varieties: Urea, Cork Bark. Foliis variengatus, Limpopo, Medio-picta, Prostrata, Variegata

t The Hills Estate our recycling is handled by Bronberg Enviro Waste. The Hills management has recently come to learn about a project Bronberg is offering support to, and we would like to bring this initiative under your attention. The Turtle Conservation Project This turtle program strives to play a participative role in the conservation of residing sea turtles, through an awareness program, for both the habitat and the breeding patterns of endangered turtles. The facilitation of regular observational turtle tours, both on foot, and at sea, during breeding season, as well as outside of breeding season. Accurate data will be shared with authorities with a focused interest in the protection of the Leatherback, Loggerhead Turtles of the area. Consideration will be given to current research activity in the area to synergistically influence the conservational outcome of the species. The habitual offering of Sodwana Bay, and surrounding areas, is considered “one of a kind, and supports residential responsibility in the conservation of both the area and marine life.
The aim is to involve all people in such a way, that the turtles, and other marine life, remain the main beneficiaries. Consideration for the protected habitat during any

sightings and activities, both on the beach and out at sea. Respect for the local residents. Five of the seven sea turtle species occur in South Africa. Loggerheads and leatherbacks nest along the northern beaches along the east coast of South Africa. The nesting area completely falls within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and is protected and managed by the Ezemvelo KZN-wildlife. South Africa has the longest continuous turtle monitoring program, and important research has been conducted that has contributed to the conservation of turtles globally.
During their journey from the nest to the sea, they dodge hungry ghost crabs, and waiting in the sea, large fish, sharks and sea birds. It is estimated that only one to two in a 1000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. Hatchlings travel with the currents and feed on mainly jellyfish and bluebottles. Not much is known about hatchlings and immature turtles and this stage is known as the “lost years. All turtles found in South Africa that include loggerheads, leatherbacks, green turtles and hawksbill turtles are classified as endangered on the IUCN red list.
Female turtles come ashore at night, almost exactly where they once hatched many years ago, and start digging an egg chamber. Then with their hind flippers, they hollow out the chamber, and lay a clutch of between 80 to 120 eggs at a given time. Eggs incubate approximately 60 to 70 days later. Turtles don’t have sex chromosomes like humans, but the temperature of the nest determines the sex. Average temperatures of above 29.2 degrees produce mostly females and below males. Hatchlings emerge as a clutch and share the workload of digging to the surface. They then remain just below the sand surface until night fall, when the temperature drops, before breaking the surface.

Data collected during turtle tours in Sodwana Bay, will be shared with various research institutions. Once the female starts laying her eggs, she is almost in a “trance”, and not easily disturbed. This is when a turtle is approached by the guide and introduced to the touring group.
Hundreds of individuals are tagged, so that their nesting patterns can be determined. Very little is known about male turtles, as they never come to shore and thus cannot be tagged. DNA samples from hatchlings will shed some light on the activities of males in the SA loggerhead and leatherback populations.
Turtle Interaction:
Humans are the major source that threatens the survival of turtles.
The following data must be collected: • General conditions of the habitat • Temperature of the sand • Measurements of the size of the Carapace
Satellite tracking was also introduced; the shell of the turtle has to be scrubbed to remove algae, before a glue mixture is applied to the shell. The transmitters attached
to the turtles will show post nesting migration routes, and will indicate their overlap with other activities like fisheries, as turtles are often caught incidentally in long line fishing gear and trawl nets. Often loggerheads with Excursions can last between 3 to 4 hours, satellite transmitters are seen while diving and only occur at night. Turtle interactions are or snorkelling on the shallow coral reefs off conducted in season between October and Sodwana Bay. March, and the out of season observations at sea, during the remaining months of the year. To learn more about this project, click here. THE HILLS BUSINESS NETWORK About a year ago my wife and I decided to start looking for a new home. As you all know this is quite a daunting task. In this search I realised that there are three very important aspects that make a nice house a perfect home: 1: Your immediate surroundings: This is the one thing that made The Hills Estate an easy sell. We, the residents of this wonderful Estate have wildlife on our doorstep. To have this in the city is unbelievable.
they do for a living. AND THAT IS WHEN “THE HILLS BUSINESS NETWORKING” EVENT WAS BORN. On the 6th of March 2020 myself and Gerhard from Carlita’s Restaurant hosted the first “THE HILLS BUSINESS NETWORKING’’ event. It was held in the conference area next to Carlita’s, which will also be the venue for future events. With very limited marketing of the first event we were nine business owners that networked and shared some valuable information about our businesses. Although we encourage people to be relaxed and enjoy themselves while networking (it takes place on a Friday after-all) we keep to a structured framework to guarantee that we keep to our time and make the event as effective as possible for everybody. “THE HILLS BUSINESS NETWORK” will be hosted on a monthly basis with April as an exception because of the Corona Covid:19 doing its rounds in our country. Our next scheduled event is planned for the 8th of May 2020. At this stage our events will take place on Fridays from 12:00 – 13:00.
2: Infrastructure: Good security, beautiful houses, neat roads, a tennis court, restaurant, Who is welcome to join us? gym, swimming pool. I think I made my point. We started this event with two goals in mind, This wonderful Estate has it all. the first being: giving business owners a platform to network with other like-minded 3: Good and friendly people: When one business owners, and the second being: needs to make a buying/renting decision, giving residents of the Estate the opportunity this is usually the information you don’t have to get to know each other better. LOST Pets
There are several steps you can take to keep your pets safe and reduce the likelihood that they’ll become lost or stolen. Your pet should wear a collar and ID tag at all times. Include an up-to-date phone number where you can be reached. ID tags are available at Pet shops & veterinary clinics. Have your pet microchipped. Microchips are an implanted form of identification equipped to access your contact information when scanned at a veterinary clinic or shelter. Spay/neuter your pet. Studies have shown that sterilized animals are less likely to roam.

Keep them safe when you’re out and about. Animals love the outdoors but it is our responsibility to protect them. Always leash your animals when outside. Keep them close to home and away from traffic, unfamiliar animals and those who may not concern themselves with your pet’s best interests. Leave them comfortable at home. Never leave your dog leashed outside a store or unattended in the car, even if it’s locked or the windows are rolled down.
