SECURITY Security is very happy to report that we had no serious incidents. Again we concentrated on our access infringements. Access control will remain our main priority. The following is very important: • Domestic and garden employees must be registered. • These employees must be legal in South-Africa. Their passports must have a valid workers permit. No asylum seekers. • Owners/tenants collecting employees at the gate and then bringing them inside, is jeopardising the security of the Estate. • Collecting contractors at the gate to work at your house is against the conduct rules stipulated in the MOI. This includes houses that are completed already. • MOI rules clearly prohibit the working of

contractors on a Sunday and Public holiday. • Under no circumstances is an owner /tenant allowed to open for any vehicle via the biometric system. We thank all residents for their co-operation. The security control room was opened recently and we’ve already seen an improvement in the control and monitoring of security aspects on the Estate. Cameras are monitored 24/7 and security is more proactive than reactive. Complaints received are centralised and we hope to deliver a better service to the residents in the estate. Contact number for security: Security control room: 0828263761 Land line: 012 996 1610 Security manager: 0768217567

Winter means veld fire awareness in this Estate. We ask that all residents and tenants be mindful with open fires and take all precautions necessary to prevent fires. Please let us all work together and prevent fires at all costs.

THE AESTHETICS COMMITTEE

Dear The Hills Resident Thank you for the opportunity to shed some light on some, often confused or unclear architectural guidelines: 1. WINDOW TINTING/FILM. Clause 7: “Reflective, coloured or heavily tinted glazing or film will not be allowed..” We have received numerous requests from homeowners to install window tinting film to windows or doors post construction. The aesthetics committee does allow for a certain amount of tinting. However; this tint may not be reflective or excessively dark. Therefore, before any window tinting is done, a sample of such tint must be delivered to the Studious Architect’s office for approval. As a rule of thumb: If clear glass has a value of 0 and black glass has a value of 10, then a tint with a value of no more than 5 will be considered. Take note that no tint with a highly reflective character will be considered. 2. WENDY HOUSES, TOOL SHEDS, LAPAS. Clause 20:”Children’s Wendy houses are permitted but must be painted to match the colour of the house and the roof must be the same colour as that of the house’s roof.”These structures may not be habitable. WENDY HOUSES: Wendy houses, as shown in the image, is not allowed in the Estate.

CHILDREN’S WENDY HOUSES: These structures are catered for in the architectural guidelines but must be painted to match the colour of the house and the roof must be the same colour as that of the house’s roof. Before any such structure is erected or placed on the property, an updated site plan indicating the position of the structure and images/ plans must be emailed to the Aesthetics committee for approval. Height and dimensions must be clearly shown. TOOL SHEDS Except for site huts that are used during construction, no tool sheds may be built or placed on any property. LAPAS Lapas are not allowed in the Estate. It creates a fire risk and is not in line with the architectural vision of the Estate. 3. GARAGE DOORS. Clause 18: “Garage doors may be of pre-painted sheet metal, Powder coated aluminium, or timber. Slatted timber doors are preferred in the architectural character of the estate. Glass paneled and excessively decorated doors are not permitted. It is important to note that polycarbonate or Perspex panels in garage doors is viewed as a glasslike material and will not be approved by the Aesthetics committee. We hope that this clarifies some uncertainty around the architectural guidelines.

TIPS FOR WINTER DETOXIFICATION

FOR WINTER WELLNESS By Wellness Warehouse It may seem strange to do a detox in winter, but there’s nothing like a bowl of delicious nutrient-dense soup and a sauna to balance out the winter chills. Although the body is designed to eliminate toxins, it can battle to do so effectively in the face of environmental pollutants and additive-laden foods. In fact, one of your body’s defence mechanisms against toxins is to store them in your fat cells. This means that toxins can remain in your system for some time, becoming a regular source of dis-ease. Flushing out toxins can help you gain energy and set your body up for healthier functioning. The basic principles of detoxing are about allowing your organs to rest – through fasting; stimulating your liver to drive toxins from your body; promoting elimination of toxins through your gut, kidneys and skin; improving circulation; and refuelling with healthy nutrients. You may want to prepare your body for detox by fasting. You can do this slowly - by not eating any solid food for a day or two, and drinking lots of water. Do remember, though - if you only drink water, you could flush your body of important nutrients, so it’s best to also drink a nutrient-rich soup. Once you’ve given your digestive system an opportunity to rest, you can begin the process of detoxing.

UP YOUR FIBRE This is so important for ensuring your digestive system works effectively. Include brown rice and organically grown fresh fruit and vegetables. Beetroot, radish, cabbage, broccoli, seaweed, artichoke, spirulina and chlorella are all great detoxifiers. HEAL WITH HERBS Your liver works extremely hard - it holds about 13% of your body’s blood at any one time, and is fundamental for eliminating toxins in your body. Drink green tea and take herbal supplements like Wellness Milk Thistle and dandelion root to support your liver. ADD VITAMIN C Vitamin C assists the body in producing glutathione, which is a liver compound that helps drive away toxins. Try Wellness Sustained Release Vitamin C for a powerful antioxidant in a buffered formula. HYDRATE Drink about two litres of water during the day to ensure you stay hydrated. SWEAT Help your body eliminate toxins through your skin. If you have access to a sauna, this is a great way to get it all out. If not, create a sauna in your bathroom by running a shower on its hottest, with all the windows and doors closed. Remember to hydrate when you are in a sauna. SCRUB Dry brush your skin with a relatively rough brush to help remove toxins through your pores. EXERCISE There’s nothing quite like exercise to boost your body. Yoga is a fantastic way to do this, as is qigong. Both include exercises specifically aimed at detoxifying. from the

Gym Manager Finding it hard to exercise during Winter? Why not join a Group Class? Here are the top four advantages of taking group fitness classes with friends and family. 1. Group exercise classes give you more motivation Exercising with a companion or in a group, whether at Pilates sessions or dance classes has many upsides. That’s because people tend to stick more faithfully with group exercise classes than with solo fitness routines. “A bit of gentle peer pressure and friendly competition can go a long way when it comes to motivation,” says Dr Dawn Skelton, a professor of aging and health at Glasgow

Caledonian University in Scotland. Even informal arrangements between friends have the advantage of making you accountable to somebody other than yourself. 2. Group exercise classes provide certified trainers In structured multi-person classes, participants can benefit from a certified trainer’s expertise and encouragement, often for a fraction of the price of oneon-one sessions. 3. Group exercise classes give you a rush The most compelling reasons to train together may be the rush: doing workouts with others promotes endorphins, morphine-like chemicals that reduce pain and make you feel good, sometimes even euphoric. Your body releases them when you’re on your own, but research suggests that group activities may have an edge. 4. Group exercise classes promote social bonding Oxford University scientists compared the same athletes rowing solo for 45 minutes and rowing in a team for an equal amount of time. The team sessions resulted in higher endorphin levels, as measured by how much squeeze needed to be added to a blood-pressure cuff before the rowers felt the first twinge of discomfort. “Synchronized physical activity elevates mood and enhances a sense of social bonding” the researchers explained. This natural high just might give you enough motivation to keep coming back for more.

It was a difficult choice between the variety of starters but I eventually settled on the Fried Crumbed Camembert wheel, ripe and piquant on the inside, served with homemade Cranberry jelly. If you are a cheese lover, this is definitely something to try – an absolutely delicious combination of creaminess and sweet and sour delight. The rest of our party had the Prawn and Fresh Avocado Cocktail, Cured Springbok Loin Carpaccio and the Hollandse Bitterballen. All three dishes were not only delicious but easy on the eyes too, with fantastic attention to detail. The Hollandse Bitterballen was particularly interesting to me. Hollandse Biefstuk, a beef fillet studded with coarse black pepper and flambéed in brandy and butter. Hats off to the chef. At this stage I was very happy I didn’t eat much during the day, as their portions are everything but small. We asked Lucky to compliment the Chef on the food he prepared for us, as we were all ecstatic about every one of the meals we had so far. Lucky explained that every Chef who prepares grilled dishes at The Hussar Grill first has to undergo extreme training in order to master the “grilled to perfection” art.

CARING FOR YOUR LAWN IN WINTER By now, after all the rain we’ve had in Gauteng during summer, most lawns resemble a lush green carpet. Sadly, for most gardens, it is a picture that will deteriorate over the next three months. But did you know that with the right lawn care you can have a beautiful lawn all year round? Also, some maintenance during winter is essential for the perfect spring lawn. Here’s what to do: Winter maintenance Because our lawns seem dormant during winter, it is natural to think it requires little to no maintenance during this season too. However, please remember to: • Regularly rake and remove any debri such as dead leaves as this limits sunlight from getting through and encourages moisture build-up. Dead leaves are great for the compost heap however, so don’t let them go to waste. • Zone in on weeds as they tend to take over in winter. • Treat your lawn with a fertiliser high in phosphate (2:3:2) to encourage root development during the months ahead. 22 | ISSUE 3 | 2 0 1 9 | T H E H I L L S E STAT E

• Aerate your lawn by perforating multiple small holes. A garden fork will work well for this. Aerating your lawn is great to let air, water and nutrients in to further encourage root development. Spread cool season/ wintergreen grass seeds A lush green lawn isn’t necessarily out of the question. Some expert advise to mow your existing grass on the lowest setting and to sow cool season wintergreen grass seeds. Soon a fresh layer of green will make its appearance. Scarify late winter Removing dead lawn is the quickest way to let roots breathe and receive light in order to ensure a spring-ready lawn. Mow your lawn using its lowest setting, cover with lawn dressing and water twice a week until new grass becomes visible through the dressing.

INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF OUR OWN

Tell us a bit about yourself I am Boitumelo Banger. I am 36-years-old and originally from Witbank in Mpumalanga. I am a wife and I have two children. I am a B.com Law graduate, the director of a company called Mayben Projects and I’m also a corporate professional. I entered Tammy Tailor Mrs South Africa 2019 as a female pioneer to change mindsets and cultivate progressive thinking. I am also a true believer in social investment as well as empowering women and children. I am a Transformational Speaker, Mindset Changer, Destiny Birther, Mentor & MC.

Where did it all start At the tender age of 16, I was already gathering young women in my home garage to empower them and address issues facing our society. I wanted to address the social, spiritual, psychological and financial needs of women. I always shadowed older women to gain wisdom and wean from their life experiences so that I may empower young women. Further, in my early 20’s I financially adopted orphans and took care of their dayto-day needs. Raised in a home that did not have much, yet had a heart of serving others – not to serve is not an option right now.

How did your passion for Business begin?

“When women are financially empowered they make better decisions about their bodies, children and life in general” – Basetsane Khumalo. I sold beads and clothes in the bus and franchises, this supplemented my pocket money and resulted in my financial independence as a young person. Further, this business helped me to survive the financial demands during university. Decades later, I am director in a multifaceted business in the mining industry.

I have also partnered with with a women’s organisation called Virtue which focuses on empowering teenage girls and young women.

I support NGOs & NPOs on an ad hoc basis, as and when I identify a need. Currently I’m working on a project focused on raising funds to provide 1000 jerseys to underprivileged school children in Witbank and surrounding areas to survive the harsh coming winter. I recently launched my first “NO Violence and NO Vandalism Campaign”, where I visit schools to address issues around the pertinent violence in schools and growing vandalism in townships.

How did your Mrs South Africa Journey start? The journey started on the 3rd of March 2019 where a significant number of women gathered for casting and the top 100 semi-finalists were selected. This platform has evolved from being just a “pageant” to that of a female empowerment movement and we have restructured our brand in such a way to showcase the virtues of South African women, the spirit of Ubuntu, and real, relatable women. Transformation and growth is what is experienced thus far in the journey. Like any organisation Tammy Tailor Mrs South Africa has CSI obligations, and as a Semi-finalist 2019, part of my responsibilities is to assist the pageant’s charity called Women 4 Women raise funds to meet its objectives. Women 4 Women is focused on female empowerment

and community upliftment as well as development. Providing mentorship and coaching to young women is also a key mandate as a semi-finalist and giving support to underprivileged girls financially and otherwise.

Tell us more about your sponsorship • I am raising funds to purchase jerseys for 1000 poor school learners who are faced with a harsh winter. Financial assistance is required to help learners with basic needs for their uniforms. • To effectively run this journey and pursue my purpose, I will need a strong financial muscle to sponsor projects that I will be carrying out as part of my campaigns. • Personal sponsors are also welcome to assist me as a contestant to be able to meet pageant criteria and requirements. • The return on investment will be formidable publicity as the Tammy Tailor Mrs South Africa brand is prestigious, has a strong following and popular sponsors are behind it. Sponsors will be advertised on my social media platforms and events where I am invited to speak.

How can we vote for you? • SMS Boitumelo Banger to 35959, free/bundle SMSs do not apply • Go to Mrs South Africa Facebook page – Like the page and visit the “semi-finalists 2019” folder under photos and like my picture. • Voting will continue until the 28th of June 2019, when the Top 25 Finalists will be announced at the Charity Ball Event to be hosted at Emperors Palace. The event will premier on SABC 3 at 7pm.

Brauhaus am Dam: A German Gem at Olifantsnek Dam

In the beautiful setting of Olifantsnek Dam and the Magaliesberg Mountains you will find the North-West’s best kept secret – Brauhaus am Dam, an authentic German brewery, eatery and events venue. The brewery boasts a female master brewer behind its award-winning beers. Now that the secret is out, we decided to find out more about her (Imke Pape) and why this wonderful place is the ideal outing any weekend of the year. 30 | ISSUE 3 | 2 0 1 9 | T H E H I L L S E STAT E

THE | WHAT’S NEW

Brauhaus am Damm was started by a group of friends. It sounds like the perfect collaboration. How did this come about and what are each of your roles in the business? A friend of ours heard about the closure of Famers Bräuhaus in Hattingspruit KZN and convinced us together with another friend and investors to buy it and build a new venue to house this magnificent brewery. We divide the roles of Brewery, Director and Maintenance Manager between us.

Where did the German influence and inspiration come from? We are all Germans in the “conglomerate” and therefore the German aspect came naturally. Your beers have won multiple awards. Congratulations! What sets your brewery-method apart from the rest? Our Brewery is a state of the art piece of equipment. I have excellent cooling facilities for my fermentation

and lagering tanks and therefore I am able to produce very good lager beer. Furthermore, I studied extensively to understand the processes in both the actual brewing and fermentation of the different beer styles. My month spent in Craft Breweries in Germany and Austria, doing practical work also helped to prepare me for brewing award winning beer! Why did you choose Olifantsnek as the location for your establishment? What makes this area so magical?

Brauhaus am Damm was built on a piece of our Farm “Steinfurt”. In trying to find a perfect location for our Brewery we looked all over the Rustenburg area and finally decided to build a new “home” on our own Farm at the Olifantsnek Dam. The location is extremely tranquil and overlooks the Dam and the magnificent Magalies mountain range.

The Magaliesberg biosphere has been declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

confidently say that you will not lay your hands on a better Eisbein in the whole of SA! Apart from the Eisbein we also serve other German specialties such as Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, a variety of German sausages and homemade Pretzels, to name but a few of our delectable dishes. Beers but my newest beer creation is my “African Summer Dream” an American Pale Ale with an African twist! It is a refreshing ale with lots of “tropical” fruit aromas and perfect balance of the malt backbone and hop bitterness. A perfect beer to have on hot summer days. Every now and again I brew a once off specialty the next one might just be a “Bock”

What can Gautengers expect when visiting Brauhaus am Damm? They will be treated with friendly hospitality, experience the tranquility of the magnificent surroundings and enjoy award winning beers and delicious food! A view from the OT’s Marianne and Cecile from ‘Exito Stimulasie Program’ Helping your kids. In order for our kids to learn to listen, focus and follow instructions as they grow, they need to develop proprioception and vestibular sense by experiencing many physical challenges during their early childhood development phase. Without it, kids can’t pay attention in school because they are too distracted by their own bodies. Basic activities like putting on clothes, trying new foods and completing homework or chores become insurmountable tasks when kids don’t have a strong vestibular sense or well-developed proprioception. Vestibular sense relays information about where the body is in relation to its surroundings. This is the sense that helps kids grasp the concept of balance – and therefore connects with all other senses. Proprioception is our awareness of where our body parts are and what they are doing without having to look at them. It also functions to help you make sense of gravity. It provides you with the ability to bring popcorn to your mouth without taking your eyes off the movie screen. This is the important part: In conclusion, for our kids to listen, focus and learn to sit still for a period of time, they MUST develop both proprioception and vestibular sense.

The most critical time to develop your child’s proprioception and vestibular senses is before the age of six. Nowadays with allowing too much time spent in front of screens, while telling kids to “sit still”, “don’t climb” and “stop jumping”, the result is that it is impossible for our kids to listen. Numerous studies show that kids today desperately need more physical activity. 36 | ISSUE 3 | 2 0 1 9 | T H E H I L L S E STAT E

The Scandinavian look: Neutral meets modern

starters and allow you to directly support the art and talent of our artisans.

The Scandinavian look of neutrals paired with layered textures is a trend that isn’t going anywhere. Whites, creams, greys, beige and tan transforms the living room into a serene space. Add wool, sheepskin, faux fur, cotton, tartan etc. to the mix and you have a winter wonderland. The use of natural materials such as wicker, leather and bamboo makes this look “work”.

Colour me gorgeous: Navy, gold, black, pinks…

Natural craftsmanship in the spotlight A trend that directly ties in with the Scandi look is the trend towards handmade craftsmanship using natural materials. People are adoring the imperfect artisan finishes of rattan and wicker furniture and decor, glassware, pottery, leather, wood and wool. Adding selective pieces to your living room contributes to the earthy character of the space. They are also amazing conversation

This season is all about brooding blacks, moody navy, berrylicious pinks, and lustrous golds. Bringing some of these colours into your living room in clever decorative ways allow you to create a cosy, on-trend space without over-committing to a specific style. Imagine black shelving, a navy velvet armchair, golden vases and berry scatters...hot, hot, hot!

The modern Retro look Geometric prints are all the rage at the moment. From wall art to scatters, carpets and even upholstery. Geo prints in mustard, tan and a spectrum of greens (olive, mint, turquoise, teal) are setting the scene for trendy TV time. Combine your prints with art deco, 50s style furniture and decor such as odd shaped mirrors, velvet couches and funky 70s lighting and you’ve nailed it!

Keep them safe when you’re out and about. Animals love the outdoors but it is our responsibility to protect them. Always leash your animals when outside. Keep them close to home and away from traffic, unfamiliar animals and those who may not concern themselves with your pet’s best interests.

Leave them comfortable at home. Never leave your dog leashed outside a store or unattended in the car, even if it’s locked or the windows are rolled down.
