The Estate Manager LetterFrom
Dear Residents of The Hills Estate,
As the sun began to set on the 28th of August, our HOA team was bustling with activity, preparing for the AGM. Equipment was being tested, tables arranged, and a steady supply of water bottles was being organized to keep everyone refreshed. Just as we thought we had everything under control, the unthinkable happened—a phone call alerted us to a fire in our game reserve.
In an instant, the mood shifted to urgency. Our dedicated team, comprised of myself and three women who have an affiliation for well-tended nails, sprang into action without hesitation. While they may not be trained firefighters, their courage and determination in the face of crisis were nothing short of heroic.
Upon arriving at the scene, we were met with the sight of flames consuming the dry brush of the game reserve. For a moment, doubt crept in as we faced the enormity of the situation.
But a single message sent through our estate WhatsApp group ignited an incredible response. Residents from all over the Hills Estate Game Reserve rallied together, ready to lend a hand. Volunteers arrived armed with buckets of water, eager
to extinguish the flames. Some residents quickly offered access to their boreholes. One remarkable lady even handed out masks to protect against the smoke.
As our team, supported by security personnel, the dedicated Garden Group, and our residents worked tirelessly to combat the flames, we were further buoyed by the collective effort of those who remained behind their phones, reaching out with words of encouragement and advice. In this time of crisis, it became abundantly clear that we are more than just an estate; we are a community that stands together, ready to support one another.
As the smoke began to clear and the fire was brought under control, pride surged through me as an Estate Manager. What we witnessed that day was a powerful reminder of the strength that lies in unity. Our community has proven that we are not merely a collection of houses; we are a vibrant society committed to fostering growth and resilience.
In light of this event, the HOA has taken proactive measures to better prepare for future emergencies. We are investing in new firefighting equipment, including beaters and blowers designed to assist in extinguishing fires more effectively. We are also hoping for rain to bless our estate soon, bringing muchneeded relief to our dry surroundings.
On a brighter note, we are pleased to report that the walkway leading to the Atterbury Gate is nearing completion, and we are hopeful it will soon be a frequently used path by our residents. Also, in response to community requests, we have installed lighting along the walkway between Hillstead South and Kingfisher Road, creating an inviting upgrade to our estate.
The experience of combating this fire has not only reinforced the bonds among our residents but has also highlighted our shared responsibility in protecting the beauty and safety of the Hills Estate Game Reserve. Together, we will continue to thrive, face challenges head-on, and grow even stronger.
Warm regards,
Sydney Goertz

A Sunset Over Hummingbird Street ROYAL ALBATROS EXPLAINED
Behind the names of the streets in our estate, there are deeper meanings, which mostly reflect nature and some symbols of strength. This is our third article in which we give details about the meaning behind our street names. Today, we shall venture into Royal Albatros, the main road inside the estate that connects different streets and acts as a link into the wider city.
What Is Royal Albatros?
The name Royal Albatros is derived from the Southern Royal Albatross, one of the biggest seabirds in the world, famous for its great wingspan, whereby it can travel long distances; the bird has become a symbol of strength, endurance, and attachment, which are expressed in Royal Albatros Street, acting as the estate’s
Aesthetic appearance: Juvenile albatrosses are white in color and have dark wings and tails; as they mature, they develop a dramatic black-andwhite contrast—an evolution mirrored by the thoughtful and
Interesting facts about the Southern Royal Albatross
Size and Weight: These are large birds that reach a body length of 1.12 to 1.23 metres and an average weight of 8.5 kilograms. Males can reach as high as 10.3 kgs whereas females reach an average weight of 7.7 kgs. Males are usually 2 to 3 kgs heavier than
Its wingspan varies within a range from 2.9 to 3.28 metres, though some birds are with a wingspan of as much as 3.5 metres. Owing to such a large wingspan, the bird stayed air for hours fatiguing too little and made long runs. In other words, Royal Albatros Street plays quite an important role in
modern design of the estate.
Lifespan: These birds can live up to 58 years. It represents endurance and longevity, just like Royal Albatros Street will take care of our estate for years to come.
The Importance of Royal Albatross in the Estate
It is also the main road in our estate, connecting a number of smaller streets and areas within our estate. Just as
the albatross connects big distances while flying, so does this road connect people with their houses, amenities, and shared spaces. Therefore, there are easy movements; thus, the community is connected, just as the big wings of this bird let it fly smoothly for thousands of miles on water.
Why Street Names Matter
Naming the streets after certain birds—like the Royal Albatross—allows our community depth, highlighting natural themes and the ability to survive against incredible odds. These symbolic names remind us of qualities that we value: strength, endurance, and connectedness.
Royal Albatros Street is something beyond a road; it speaks to the very foundation on which the values of our estate stand. It’s a major route, acting like an artery connecting most parts of the community; it inspires the spirit of being connected and strong, just like the Southern Royal Albatross flies effortlessly across great expanse.
This is the third in our series of articles, more of which will follow, explaining what lies behind the names which define our estate.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT & CONSERVATION
WITH PRETORIA WILDLIFE SERVICES
By Phillip Fouché & Tobia von Zwietring
At The Hills Eco Estate, we are committed to preserving our unique wildlife while maintaining a balance between nature and the needs of our community. To achieve this, we partner with the experts at Pretoria Wildlife Services, who handle the management, capture, and relocation of animals on our estate. Here’s an inside look into how Pretoria Wildlife Services cares for our wildlife and the steps they take during the capture process.
Monitoring and Veterinary Oversight
Whenever wildlife is captured or relocated, a registered veterinarian from Pretoria Wildlife Services is always present. The veterinarian is
responsible for determining which tranquilizers and medications are used in the dart gun, ensuring that the animal’s well-being is closely monitored throughout the process. This professional oversight ensures that the animals are treated humanely and safely.
Disease Prevention and Medication
To keep our wildlife healthy, Pretoria Wildlife Services consults and advise on when medical management is required. Most often these practises are applied through the supplementary feed we provide, but occasionally individual animal veterinary care is applied when needed. For external parasites, passive dipping stations at feeding
sites apply treatments as the animals feed. The frequency of these applications is dependent on tick load and is typically necessary from the end of January, with follow-up treatments in March or April if needed.
Feeding and Supplements
Our estate provides specific feed and supplements, under the guidance of Pretoria Wildlife Services, to meet the nutritional needs of our wildlife, particularly during winter.
The supplements used
include:
• Combined Mineral Blocks: These round blocks contain
essential micronutrients and minerals, and are placed at feeding stations for a variety of species.
• Sodium Chloride Blocks: Large salt blocks, specifically beneficial for zebras and blue wildebeest.
• Wildlife Blocks: Hard, dark brown blocks placed in green containers to prevent zebras from chewing through them. These blocks are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially useful in winter.
• Garlium: A garlic-based supplement given during summer to help control external parasites.
• Superblock 150: A high-protein block used to supplement wildlife diets during winter.
• Whole Yellow Maize: Scattered on the ground for leaf-feeding animals like nyalas, kudus, and impalas. It provides energy serving as a substitute for seedpods that are scarce in winter.
• Lucerne: Occasionally provided for its high protein value.
Feeding takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, typically around 8 AM. It’s essential that residents do not feed the wildlife, as their diets are carefully balanced to ensure they receive the right nutrients in the right amounts.
Wildlife Capture and Relocation by Pretoria Wildlife Services
The estate operates under a wildlife management plan, aligned with our permit and overseen by Pretoria Wildlife Services. This plan ensures that the number of animals on the estate is sustainable and that the environment can support them with minimal supplementary feeding.
Here’s how they manage wildlife capture:
Population Control: The team maintains a balance between male and female animals, with a typical ratio of one male to ten females. Extra breeding males are left to establish dominance naturally.
Wildlife Sales and Transfers: Young or older males are usually removed during capture and sold or exchanged with other estates. Wildlife from our estate stays within Gauteng mostly, where the animals are already adapted to our sourveld environment. Animals moved to areas with very different vegetation, may struggle to adapt to the new vegetation and habitat.
Species Limits: We have reached the maximum number of species allowed by GDARD (Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) on our CPJ (Exemption) permit, meaning No new species are allowed to reintroduce in future to our estate in general. Larger animals, such as giraffes, also cannot be kept due to the size limitations of our land.
A Day with Pretoria Wildlife Services: The Wildlife Capture Process
Recently, we had the opportunity to witness a wildlife capture operation performed by Pretoria Wildlife Services.
It was an incredible experience to see their team in action. The process is swift to
minimize stress on the animals. Once an animal is darted, the team works quickly to ensure its head remains upright to prevent bloat and stomach content aspiration complications. This is particularly important for ruminants, as they can regurgitate and choke if not handled promptly.
Here’s how Pretoria Wildlife Services manages the capture:
• Drone Assistance: The first step involves using a drone to locate the animal to be darted. The drone stays focused on the animal to track it until it is found, preventing it from hiding in dense vegetation.
• Darting: A veterinarian then darts the animal, and the team quickly moves to transport it, with the drone still focused on the animal.
• Animal Handling: It requires a team of people to move the tranquilized animal, which is like moving dead weight, out of the bush and into the transport trailer.
• Measuring and Transport: The animal’s horns are measured, and it is carefully loaded into the trailer. Branches are placed inside to make the animal feel secure when it wakes up.
• Reversal of Tranquilizer: A reversal agent is administered to counteract the tranquilizer, which takes about 10 minutes to wear off. The animals are also given a calming agent to reduce stress during transport.
Through the dedicated efforts of Pretoria Wildlife Services, we ensure the sustainable management of our wildlife population while maintaining the natural balance of the ecosystem at The Hills Eco Estate. We are proud to work with such a professional team, committed to protecting the beauty and diversity of our wildlife.

Know your
trees
Article by Elize Malan
Arbor week early in September is initiated by DAFF and two different species are chosen every year to increase our general knowledge of indigenous trees and promote their planting.
The trees for 2024 are the following:
Searsia Iancea, Black Karee / Searsia leptodictya, Mountain Karee
They are medium-sized low branching trees with attractive round canopies. Usually grow to a height of 7 to 8 m but can be larger under favourable conditions.
A Black Kare is evergreen and has long thinnish hairless dark green leaves. It is a fast grower and tolerant to drought and cold.
Leaves of the Mountain Karee are wider and shorter. The real difference is that the tree is deciduous and only semi frost hardy.
Sweetly scented flowers are produced by both species from June until September, which attract bees and other insects.
The fruit is a popular food source for birds.
Searsia lancea is useful in providing natural soil stabilization and increasing infiltration of rainwater into the soil, thus reducing erosion and raising the ground water table.
Game animals such as kudu, roan antelope and sable browse the leaves of the tree which can serve as an important food source for them in times of drought.
The density of the plant makes it suitable for use as a screen or barrier against wind, noise, or to provide privacy.
Apodytes dimidiata subsp. dimidiata, Whitepear
This tree is good choice for the home garden as it is a small, only 4 to 5 metres tall, evergreen, with a neat well-rounded crown. Young plants are relatively slow growing, but growth rate improves when established. It can be planted near the house, and will not disturb the foundations or paved areas.
This is a small bushy tree. Prune off the lower branches and it will make a beautiful single stemmed speciman.
Apodytes dimidiata forms sprays of scented white flowers, that are borne in summer, followed by attractive berries in mid to late summer.
The red aril of the fruits will attract a variety of birds including Blackeyed Bulbul, Rameron Pigeon, Redwinged and Glossy Starlings, Guinea Fowl and Pied Barbets.
The plant can be used as a hedge or screening plant and is suitable to be planted in areas next to the swimming pool. The fruits are not fleshy and therefore cause no mess on paved areas.
The white pear thrives in well-drained, compost-rich soil and needs regular irrigation.
It is mostly endemic to KZN and Limpopo and small trees need to be protected against frost.
Given the correct soil and climate conditions the Whitepear is a beautiful tree to plant. The Black Karee can be messy but it is still an excellent choice for Gauteng gardens.

Seasonal Shifts & Unwavering Dedication with the garden group
With each passing season, our customized work schedules and approach to maintenance evolve to meet the unique needs of the winter months at The Hills Game Reserve Estate. During the colder season, our team at the garden group shifts focus to essential winter tasks, such as cleaning up fallen leaves and protecting sensitive plants with frost covers, ensuring the Estate thrives through every seasonal transition.
Winter’s Focus on Safety and Sustainability
While winter slows the growth of lawns, we used this time to concentrate on other vital areas of maintenance. Our team meticulously crown-lifted trees along the streets, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and safety for residents. Fire safety remained a priority, with fire breaks cut around the reserve and nearby homes, providing peace of mind to those living close to the wild. We also tackled the essential task of clearing storm drains, ensuring that the estate is wellprepared for the wetter months ahead.
Protecting and Preparing the Landscape
One unique practice we apply is our delayed cutting back of ornamental grasses. By waiting until late winter, we allow the old grass to act as a natural insulation, protecting the plant’s roots from the cold. This thoughtful, eco-friendly approach ensures the landscape is resilient through the harsher months. As winter nears its end, we prepare for the vibrant spring season by composting and fertilizing both lawns and garden beds, setting
the stage for a lush and vibrant landscape.
Balancing Seasonal and Regular Tasks
Through all of these winterspecific duties, our regular estate maintenance continues uninterrupted. Thanks to the exceptional leadership of our Site Manager, Daniel Poto, all tasks—from leaf cleanups to fertilization—were completed on schedule and with the high level of care that residents have come to expect. Daniel’s commitment ensures that nothing is overlooked, even during the busiest times.
Looking Ahead to Spring
Just as we have always worked to seamlessly blend nature and design in our landscaping efforts, we remain dedicated to preparing the estate for the growth and transformation that spring will bring.
Our eco-friendly practices and detailed maintenance schedules allow The Hills Game Reserve Estate to flourish throughout the year, providing a sanctuary for both residents and wildlife.
Preparing for Summer Rains
As we near the end of winter and look ahead to summer, we’ve also taken proactive steps to ensure The Hills Game Reserve Estate is well-prepared for the above-normal rainfall expected this season. Our team cleared and cleaned all stormwater channels, ensuring optimal water flow and minimizing the risk of flooding. This essential maintenance not only protects the estate’s infrastructure but also safeguards the gardens and natural spaces we’ve worked so hard to cultivate. At the garden group, we prioritize long-term sustainability, ensuring the estate can withstand the challenges of changing weather patterns.
At the garden group, we pride ourselves on adapting to the changing seasons, offering a tailored approach to landscape maintenance that ensures lasting beauty and sustainability. Together, we will continue to preserve the natural charm and balance of this remarkable estate.
spring clean YOUR COMPLEXION
The Spring season brings with it all sorts of opportunities to turn over a new leaf and apply an “out with the old, in with the new” approach to all sort of areas of your life – from your wardrobe and your home to your skin care, too.
‘Tis the season to talk about peeling, the good kind! At Skin Renewal, the start of September signals the start of superficial peel season; just the gap you need to get your skin summerready before the summer sun shows up in all its long-awaited glory. Whereas the Winter
months are for the more intense “peeling like a snake” peels that come with a bit of downtime, the first month or two of Spring are for the peels that you can pop in to slot into a lunchbreak and hop onto a video call, with the camera on, a couple of hours later.
WHAT IS A SUPERFICIAL CHEMICAL PEEL?
Ideal for maintenance or as an introductory treatment and the gentlest form of chemical peels, superficial peel treatments use mild acids such as AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or Glycolic Acid, BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) or Salicylic Acid, among others, to non-invasively remove only the outermost layer of the epidermis with minimal recovery time.
From soothing inflammation to treating the signs of ageing and sun damage, from reducing fine lines and wrinkles to addressing uneven skin tone and texture, superficial peels are safe for almost all skin types and tones but are not recommended for those with active skin infections, open wounds, or recent sunburns. Those with darker skins should also do their homework before booking a peel of any kind, as their skin type runs the risk of experiencing post-peel hypopigmentation.
To peel or not to peel?
The answer is a question of what your skin needs. We offer a wide range of options in the area of superficial peels, as well as alternatives such as microdermabrasion for those who don’t feel comfortable going the chemical peel route.
AZELAIC PEEL
A low pH combination peel, containing Azelaic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid and Arnica. The unique formulation ensures that all the main signs and symptoms of acne are targeted, namely oiliness, congestion, breakouts, PIH and inflammation.
GLUTATHIONE PEEL
The potent antioxidant properties of glutathione target pigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone, revealing a more even, youthful glow, and reducing the appearance of medium to deep wrinkles.
MCCM LIFTING PEEL
Made of Lactic Acid and DMAE, this peel moisturises and refreshes mature, dry skin, softening fine lines and rough texture. It also stimulates cell renewal and provides a lifting effect.
MCCM FLASH PEEL
This gentle peel, consisting of Lactic Acid, Allantoin, and Agireline, is ideal for dry skin and upcoming events.
PYRUVIC (20%) PEEL
Pyruvic Acid addresses mature skin with fine lines and wrinkles, as well as scars and acne scars.
GLYCOLIC PEEL 70% (FOR BODY)
As Glycolic Acid 70% is ideal for acne, rough texture and pigmentation on the body, this peel reduces the appearance of acne scars, deep lines and wrinkles, and photo-ageing.
WHAT MAKES A SUPERFICIAL PEEL AT SKIN RENEWAL DIFFERENT?
The Skin Renewal approach, whatever your skin and body goals are, is always a holistic one. This means that a peel treatment is not just a peel. Depending on your concerns and goals, our Doctors and medically-trained therapists ensure that your time in the treatment room is well spent – incorporating add-ons such as laser genesis, one of four meso infusions (Vit C, HA, Brightening & Clarifying) and serums (which can be combined with transdermal mesotherapy) to optimise patients’ results.
Some of the serums that can be included to your superficial peel treatment include HA serum, Growth Factor serum and the much buzzed about Tranexamic Acid, which is becoming much talked about within aesthetics circles given its versatility and efficacy; from reducing melanin production and treating hyperpigmentation to brightening skin while delivering on impressive antiinflammatory promises.
The truth of the matter is, the only thing “superficial” about a superficial peel is the term for it. Making a Spring peel –or a series of Winter-through-Spring peels – part of your skincare regime is a gamechanger.
To find out more about removing winter’s damage and preparing your skin for the environmental factors that come with the summer months, pop into your nearest Skin Renewal branch or contact us.

Stay calm but act fast. Open your pet’s mouth, gently grasp the tongue, and pull it forward so the tongue is outside the mouth and the airways are open..
Stay calm, help your pet stay calm, but act fast. If your pet can still breathe, try to keep them calm and immediately seek veterinary care
If possible, and without getting hurt, open your pet’s mouth. Look inside your pet’s mouth for foreign objects
IF you see an object, you can try to remove it. This is easier done with two people. Gently open your pet’s mouth using two hands. The object can be removed either with your fingers OR by using the flat side of a spoon to pull it closer. Please be careful not to push the object further down
When the object can’t be removed: It's time to make use of the law of gravity or to do the Heimlich
Small dogs and cats: gently pick up your pet by their thighs and swing them in the air from side to side. If that doesn’t help to dislodge the object, apply forward pressure to the pet’s abdomen just behind the rib cage.
For larger dogs: Try the Heimlich manoeuvre If your large dog is standing, place your arms around their belly, just like you would a person, and make a fist with your hands. Place your fist on the soft spot under their ribcage, then push up and forward.
Seek veterinary care when you fail to dislodge the object or when your pet is not able to breathe. Check the lips and tongue for blue-tinge.
Quickly check for airway obstruction. If there is a foreign body obstructing the airway, remove it as described above. If the airway is open, perform rescue breathing . There are many videos online that help explain rescue breathing. The basics are: Hold your pet’s mouth closed with your hand and breathe directly into their nose until you see their chest expand Once the chest expands, continue providing 10-20 rescue breaths per minute until your pet is breathing on their own or you arrive at the closest veterinary hospital.
It is important to take your pet to the vet as soon as possible.
DO CPR. For detailed images and a video, please visit: https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pethelp-and-advice/pet-health-hub/otherveterinary-advice/cpr-for-dogs-and-puppies Start with rescue breathing as described for non-breathing pets, then begin chest compressions.
Chest compressions:
Position your pet:
For cats and most dogs: put your pet on one side.
For barrel-chested dogs: (like English Bulldogs and even certain lines of Staffies), lay them on their back and place your hands on their breastbone
Position yourself:
For small dogs and cats: Wrap your dominant hand around their chest with your thumb on top, and your other four fingers underneath. Keep your other hand behind their back to stop them from moving Then, squeeze the chest between your thumb and fingers at 100-120 times per minute (i.e. to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”)
For medium to large breed dogs: Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, over the widest point of the chest, then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked.
For deep-/keel chested breed dogs (Greyhounds, Great Danes): Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, directly over the location of the heart, then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked. For flat-/barrel chested breed dogs (Bulldogs): Sit behind them, place your hands interlocked, directly over the midpoint of their chest Remember they should lay on their backs (see image), then press down 100-120 times per minute, keeping your elbows locked.
Other important notes:
Aim to compress the chest cavity by about one-third of its total width. If you’re alone, alternate chest compressions with rescue breaths. Perform 30 chest compressions, stop to give two rescue breaths Repeat If you have help, one person can give chest compressions and the other can give 10 rescue breaths per minute Continue until you can hear and/or feel a heartbeat and your pet is breathing regularly, or you have arrived at the l t t i h it l d th
Environmental management:
The aim is to give your pet a sense of security and also to reduce the intensity of the noise.
Provide your pet with a “safe space”. This area should be associated with relaxation and positive experiences before the noise event occurs. So, it requires a bit of light training beforehand.
If possible, it helps to make the safe space in a windowless room to block out visual stimuli and make the sound less audible. Sound can be masked by a loud fan or calming music with repetitive drumbeats.
Animal Behaviour:
Attention or food rewards during these loud noise events was previously believed to reinforce fear However, fear is an emotion and not an operant behaviour. Rewards can help elicit positive emotions which might help change the unwanted behaviour. It is recommended to offer high-value treats and to give contact only when your pet seeks it out on their own accord - unsolicited touching or holding could increase stress further.
Try to distract your pet from the noise by playing with them, asking them to perform simple tasks and motivate them with high value treats/toys. Refusing to eat is a sign of severe stress. If your pet refuses highvalue food, anxiolytic medication might be indicated.
Medication:
There are many natural as well as prescription treatments to consider. It is best to have a consultation with your veterinarian to discuss all the options and to tailor treatment specific to your pet’s needs Because of all the options and individual pet’s response to treatment, it's usually advised to have a treatment trial before the stressful event, like New Year’s Eve fireworks, occurs.

Of Fermented Foods & Drinks
Benefits
Fermented foods and drinks have stood the test of time, with a history dating back thousands of years. This ancient practice is now being rediscovered for its wide array of health benefits, thanks to the beneficial bacteria and yeast involved in the fermentation process.
At the core of fermentation lies the cultivation of beneficial microorganisms, which not only enhance the flavor and texture of foods but also transform them into nutritional powerhouses. These probiotics—live beneficial bacteria— populate the gut, contributing to a balanced microbiome. Popular fermented
foods such as yoghurt, amasi, kimchi, and sauerkraut are rich in probiotics, which aid in digestion, boost immune function, and support overall gut health. As research increasingly highlights the importance of gut health, these foods offer a practical way to improve well-being.
Unlocking Nutrients and Reducing Digestive Discomfort
Fermentation has the unique ability to enhance the bioavailability of nutrients, making them easier for the body to absorb and use. By breaking down complex compounds, fermentation allows for better absorption of key nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. For example, the fermentation of grains and legumes, like those found in products such as mageu, reduces levels of antinutrients like phytic
acid, which can otherwise inhibit the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. This not only increases the nutritional value of these foods but also minimizes digestive discomfort that may arise from unfermented versions.
Boosting Immunity and Fighting Inflammation
Beyond gut health, fermented foods also play a role in boosting immunity. The probiotics introduced through fermentation help diversify gut bacteria, which is essential for a well-functioning immune system. Moreover, fermentation often produces beneficial by-products like short-chain fatty acids, antioxidants, and bioactive peptides. These compounds have been shown to exert antiinflammatory and antimicrobial effects, contributing to overall resilience and vitality.
An Affordable and Accessible Superfood
For those looking to improve their diet on a budget, fermented foods are an affordable option. Easy to prepare at home and widely available in stores, these foods provide a cost-effective way to boost health. Incorporating locally made products such as amasi and mageu can be a great step toward maintaining both gut and immune health.
Consult a Professional
While fermented foods offer numerous health benefits, it’s important to remember that they are not a cure for any medical condition. If you have specific health concerns or digestive issues, it’s recommended to consult your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your diet. Fermented foods should be
viewed as a supplement to a balanced lifestyle, not a replacement for medical treatments.
Whether you’re looking to improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, or support your immune system, incorporating fermented foods and drinks into your diet can deliver a host of benefits.
Embrace this time-tested tradition with foods like amasi and fermented vegetables to

Big Ideas for Your Small Bathroom
Got a small bathroom? No problem! With the right design tricks, you can maximize every square inch, turning it into a chic, functional space that feels much larger than it really is. Let’s dive into some fun, practical ways to make your tiny bathroom feel grand!
1. Tiny Fixtures, Big Impact
Just because your bathroom is small doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style. Wallmounted toilets are a lifesaver when it comes to freeing up floor space—by tucking the tank inside the wall, they create a clean, sleek look. Pair that with a pedestal sink for a classic, elegant feel that doesn’t hog room. Love showers? Corner and frameless showers fit snugly into your space, offering style without overwhelming the layout. These compact fixtures deliver huge style points!
2. Float Your Storage!
One of the easiest ways to make a small bathroom feel larger is to free up floor space. Enter floating vanities! Not only do they provide much-needed storage for all your essentials, but they also create an airy, open feeling. You’ll wonder how your bathroom ever felt cramped! For even more storage, add recessed shelves into your shower or walls. These built-ins are perfect for tucking away toiletries and keeping the bathroom clutter-free.
3. Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
The magic of mirrors in small spaces cannot be overstated! A large mirror above the vanity will reflect light and instantly make the room feel bigger. If you want to go the extra mile, consider adding a mirrored cabinet for even more storage without taking up additional room. Light, neutral colors like soft whites, greys, or beiges also help to brighten things up, making the space feel expansive. Don’t forget to throw in some subtle patterns—like herringbone tiles or a soft floral wallpaper—to add depth without clutter.
4. Go Vertical, Baby!
When floor space is limited, it’s time to think up! Vertical storage is your secret weapon in a small bathroom. Install tall, narrow cabinets that reach toward the ceiling, giving you plenty of storage for towels and toiletries without crowding the room. Use hooks or racks higher on the walls for items like towels or robes, freeing up floor space while keeping everything within easy reach.
5. Light It Right
Layering lighting is key to making any bathroom feel inviting and open. Start with some bright overhead lights to illuminate the entire space, then add task lighting around the vanity for makeup or shaving. For an added touch of luxury, use accent lighting under your floating vanity or shelves—this will add depth to the room and make it feel bigger. Bright bathrooms are happy bathrooms!
6. Tough Stuff for Steamy Spaces
Bathrooms get humid fast, so it’s crucial to pick materials that can handle the heat and moisture while staying stylish. Porcelain tiles are a go-to choice for floors and walls because they’re durable, easy to clean, and come in endless styles. For countertops, go with quartz—not only is it beautiful, but it’s also scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, and low-maintenance. You can leave your curling iron on it without worry! Vinyl flooring is another great option—it’s moisture-resistant and can mimic the look of high-end materials like wood or stone.
7. Add Some Personality
Small spaces don’t have to be boring! Add a touch of your own style with fun accessories that make the room feel personal. Statement light fixtures can elevate the entire space—think a bold pendant light or an eye-catching sconce. Add a piece of artwork that makes you smile every time you enter the room. Finally, luxe accessories like a sleek soap dispenser or a set of plush towels can give your bathroom that five-star hotel feel.
A tiny bathroom might seem like a design challenge, but it’s actually an opportunity to get creative! With the right fixtures, lighting, and storage solutions, you can make the most of every square inch. Embrace floating vanities, large mirrors, and vertical storage to open up the space. Choose durable materials like porcelain and quartz to withstand the bathroom’s humid conditions, and don’t forget to add a splash of personality with statement accessories. With these big ideas, your small bathroom will become a stylish, functional retreat!

Dear Residents,
As we embrace the new season, I’d like to remind everyone of a few important points:
Speeding: This continues to be a serious concern, as we still receive numerous complaints about vehicles speeding within the estate. With many of us spending more time outdoors—whether exploring the streets or enjoying the reserve—it’s essential for everyone’s safety to stick to the speed limits.
Contractor and Domestic Worker Access: Please ensure that you follow proper access control procedures and avoid picking up contractors or domestic workers on Garsfontein Road without authorization. Additionally, check that any foreign workers are compliant with the Immigration Act.
General Reminders (as per our penalty schedule):
1. Public Behaviour: No socially unacceptable behavior is allowed in public areas. This includes but is not limited to shouting, swearing, alcohol abuse, illegal substances, or smoking of “hubbly-bubbly pipes.”
2. Open Fires: No open fires are permitted. Please use designated braai facilities for any outdoor cooking.
3. Noise: Excessive noise is a violation of local bylaws. If necessary, SAPS will be contacted to address disturbances.
Fire Safety in the Reserve:
1. With the recent fire in the reserve, we kindly ask residents to supervise children when walking in the area to ensure everyone’s safety.
2. For those who smoke, please ensure that cigarettes are fully extinguished and disposed of properly in the bins provided along the walkways.
Finally, please remember that Omega Risk Solutions also offers security alarm installations and emergency response services on-site. Should you need any assistance, feel free to contact me directly.

The following should be considered when thinking about installing solar:
• Is it only to overcome load shedding inconvenience?
• Do you want to save on your electricity bill?
• How much electricity do you currently use, and which appliances are essential?
Answers on these questions will help you or the solar installer when designing a system that you can afford and maybe plan to implement in stages.
Additional important things to keep in mind
Know and understand the tariff implemented with solar installations:
Solar tariffs work in peak, offpeak and standard times. If you know and understand how the tariff works, you can adjust your solar settings accordingly to ensure that your inverter only recharges from the grid during standard and off-peak
SOLAR INSTALLATIONS
AT THE HILLS ESTATE
Since load shedding was implemented, the growth in Solar installations has exploded. Current statistics show that almost 40% of the Estate already have solar systems of some form installed. It might be an inverter and battery or inverter and solar panels or a complete system. Depending on specific needs and available capital, it appears that only a few are reaping the full benefits.
times. This will reduce the cost of electricity used from the grid. It will also help to adjust your schedule to use electricity when the sun is shining.
Exporting of excess energy:
The export of excess energy not used should be seen as a bonus. The model used in South Africa for reimbursement of energy is called Net Metering. Thus, the excess energy credited in one month will not be more than the energy used in that month. Credits not used will roll over to the next month for a maximum of 12 months during the tariff year from April to March. If you install too many solar panels, you will over-capitalize and not be able to get credit for all the excess energy produced. A simple analogy is to see export energy as a savings bank. During summer there will be excess energy which can be applied to higher winter consumption in the same year.
Use a trusted solar installer:
Ensure that the solar installer you choose is accredited and can help you with the application to install a solar system. They will also need to adhere to the aesthetic standards of the Estate. The installer also must change the settings on the inverter to comply with regulations as indicated in the application for approval.
Switch
to Smart meter:
Common split meters are not compatible with solar installations. These powerline carrier meters communicate via powerlines, and solar systems can interfere with communication between the keypad and the meter, resulting in the need for a change later. A Smart meter has an online portal where you can recharge, check your available balance, and see detailed consumption and export information. It also provides peace of mind, knowing that you can ensure your house has power,
regardless of where you are in the world.
It is of the utmost importance that solar systems are installed by a professional and that your solar system has been inspected and tested by RNM. Solar systems that do not adhere to the HOA standard, can lead to the following:
• Electrical Hazards
Faulty wiring or connections can lead to short circuits, electrical shocks, or even fires.
• Structural Damage
Poorly mounted solar panels can damage roofs or other structures, leading to leaks and other structural issues.
• Reduced Efficiency
Incorrect installation can result in poor performance, meaning the system generates less power than intended, which will impact energy savings.
• Inverter Issues
Improperly installed inverters can lead to overheating or failure, affecting the entire solar system’s operation.
• Battery Risks If battery storage systems are not installed correctly, they can pose fire risks or cause chemical leaks.
• Safety Violations Noncompliance with HOA standards and regulations will lead to fines or disconnection of supply to the premises.
Reticulation Network
Management (RNM) is appointed as the competent Person and acts as the Municipality in the Estate. We are responsible for the safety and integrity of the electrical network. RNM processes solar applications and conducts inspections after installation. We at RNM are always more than happy to assist with any queries regarding solar applications and installations.
You can contact RNM at 0861222623 or send an email to support@smartmeter. co.za to enquire about solar applications, inspections or converting to a smart meter.
More information regarding solar energy:
1. Environmental Benefits
Reduction in Carbon
Footprint: solar energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainable Energy
Source: solar is renewable and abundant, contributing to a more sustainable energy future
2. Economic Advantages
Lower Energy Bills: solar panels can decrease electricity costs for homeowners. The compensation on the current solar tariff (Eskom Homeflex) is as follows:
3. Energy Independence: solar energy can reduce reliance on imported fuels and power supply from the grid.
4. Energy Efficiency and Reliability
Grid Stability: solar energy typically peaks during the day when electricity
demand is higher. By providing additional power during these peak times, solar helps stabilize the grid and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
5. Incentives and Financial Benefits
Increased Property Value: Studies show that homes
with solar panels often sell for more than those without. As awareness of renewable energy grows, more buyers actively seek out homes with solar, increasing competition and driving up prices.

Get Your Daily Dose of Sunshine
We’ve all heard the phrase “get some sunshine!” but did you know that sunshine is more than just a mood booster? It’s also the key to your body’s natural production of vitamin D, a super important nutrient for your bones, immune system, and even your mental health! Living in sunny South Africa, it’s easy to think we’re all swimming in vitamin D, but that’s not always the case. Let’s dive into why your vitamin D levels still matter, even if you’re soaking up those South African rays!.
Vitamin D: The Sunshine Superstar
Vitamin D is like a backstage hero in your body. You can’t see it, but it’s working hard behind the scenes to:
1. Build strong bones: Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium so you can stay sturdy and strong.
2. Power up your immune system: It’s your first line of defense against those pesky colds and flu bugs.
3. Keep you smiling: Studies show it helps with mood regulation and might even help fight off the blues.
4. Support muscle strength: Yep, vitamin D helps keep your muscles working smoothly, so no unexpected wobbles!
But Wait… We Live in Sunny South Africa!
True, we’re blessed with sunshine, beaches, and outdoor adventures, but that doesn’t always mean we’re getting enough vitamin D. Why? Well, modern life is a bit more “desk and screen” than “beach and sun” these days.
Here’s why you might still be missing out:
• Indoor life: Office life, Netflix binges, and school runs – sound familiar? Most of us spend the majority of our day inside, away from the sun.
• Sunblock city: We’re doing a great job protecting our skin from sun damage with SPF (yay for fewer sunburns!), but sunblock also blocks the UVB rays your skin needs to make vitamin D.
• Your skin tone matters: People with darker skin have more melanin, which is amazing for natural sun protection but slows down vitamin D production. So, you might need a bit more sun to get your daily dose.
How Much Sun is “Just Right”?
Ah, the golden question – how much sun is enough to keep your vitamin D levels in check without turning into a lobster? It’s a balancing act, but here’s a fun rule of thumb:
• 10 to 30 minutes of midday sunshine a few times a week (depending on your skin tone) on your arms, legs, or face should do the trick! Midday is when the sun is at its prime for vitamin D production.
• Don’t forget the sunscreen! After you’ve soaked in your 10-30 minutes of rays, slap on that SPF 30+ to protect your skin from burns and long-term damage.
• More sunshine in winter: If it’s colder and you’re bundled up, or if you’ve got a darker skin tone, you might need a little extra time in the sun to hit your vitamin D goals.
Why Checking Your Levels is So Important
Even with all that glorious South African sunshine, it’s still possible to be low on vitamin D. That’s why it’s a great idea to get your levels checked with a quick and easy blood test – especially if you’re feeling tired, achy, or catching colds more often than usual.
Low vitamin D levels can lead
to:
• Weaker bones and risk of fractures (ouch!).
• A sluggish immune system that lets every bug knock you down.
• Mood swings and fatigue that just won’t quit.
Living in a sunny country doesn’t automatically mean we’re getting all the vitamin D we need. Whether you’re an indoor enthusiast or a sunlover with sunblock always on hand, it’s important to get a little sun, check your levels, and keep things balanced. So next time you step outside, remember: a little bit of sunshine goes a long way –just don’t forget the SPF after your daily dose! Stay SunSavvy!
