ESTATE NEWS
from the Estate
Now is also the best time of the year to pay attention to all the small things around the house that needs to be done. Some TLC and fresh paint will bring back the glory of your home.
Speed is a constant challenge around the Estate and we urge residents to get involved in addressing the situation when you experience speeding and/or reckless driving. We received several complaints, especially around the Eco Area where our animals suffer the most, ending up hurt or, worse, killed. The HOA team cannot be everywhere at all times and need your assistance here. Eyes and boot are what is required so that we can address this matter collectively. We notice on a regular basis that several young children are left un-accompanied roaming the Estate, something that is
of great concern. Often they are on the roads riding balance boards or skateboards unsupervised and are unaware of the rules of the road or the dangers of our resident speedsters! We urge residents and tenants to ensure that children younger than 14 years are accompanied by appropriate adult supervision when traveling in the Estate. Caretakers and nannies are often seen to be distracted and chatting while the youngsters are left by themselves. We are pleased to report back on the successful implementation of the
recycling initiative and the support and participation from you, the residents. This is something that we know will grow in support as the Estate develops further. Should you have any enquiries please use the dedicated email address dontwasterecycle@gmail.com for assistance. Residents will also see new faces at the gates and around the Estate as we welcome Omega Risk Solutions as our newly appointed security service provider. The board spent quite some time in selecting a new service provider, with clearly defined requirements for

your safety and security. Omega Risk are being specifically tasked with this and the company has committed itself to providing this crucial service at all times. We call on all our residents to adhere to security processes and procedures security as your negligence or neglect may compromise other residents’ safety.

We noticed that several domestic and garden employees are not currently registered and that owners are driving them to their premises. This practice is against the security protocols and we urge all occupants to register their domestic and garden staff without delay. This aspect has already been communicated to the new service providers and is something that will be monitored closely. We are also much closer to taking our control room online and have the perimeter CCTV cameras live, active and monitored. The
final stages in this project are currently being commissioned and would enhance our security functionality greatly. Our service gate is fully operational and elevates many aspects around the contractor access quite successfully. We urge residents to please inform the HOA of any contractors no longer working at their stands so that we can manage their access accordingly. All is going well at the gym as Tanya and the team of Resilience Fitness settled in and are assisting residents to obtain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Please help by ensuring equipment is properly utilised, sweat towels are used at all times and the gym floor is left in a tidy state once finished. We wish all our Muslim residents well in celebrating the Month of Ramadan. Kind Regards,

WILDLIFE GARDENING In my previous article I talked about the different zones or areas that an indigenous garden can be divided into. Now, let’s delve deeper into The Open Area.
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018

GARDENING
The Open Area
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
The first area I would like to look at is the open area. The open area of the garden is the area where no trees or plants are growing. The lawn forms this area and is in most cases the biggest part of the garden. The lawn provides a safe feeding ground for many species like longlegged birds for example the Crowed plover, Sotted thick- knee and Hadeda ibis. The African Hoopoe is a bird with distinctive colouration that can forage for hours on the lawn. Other creatures, like toads, mice and insects will feed on the lawn area when it is safe to do so, quickly retreating to other parts of the garden when danger arrives. Seed eating birds tend to flock down on laws to feed.
16
Birds can be attracted to an open area by creating a sand bath. Select a piece of ground of one square meter in size, create a bath using soft, powdery sand to a depth of about 200mm, then watch the birds flock in. Ground birds and birds in general will use the dust to rid them from insects. You can see them scooping up the dust
with their wings and feet and tossing it over the rest of their bodies. Once finished, they will ruffle their feathers to shake out the residue. Wild grasses can also be used to create an open area or landscape giving a uniquely African touch to the landscape. The fringe of wild grass can be nicely enhanced with the addition of a log or two and some interesting rocks. The alternative open area can be created by using a great variety of low growing ground covers. A ground cover meadow can provide year round colour. Mixed with perennials it can form a carpet of colour throughout the year. The plants provide food for the wildlife and shelter for the smaller animals like frogs and lizards and provide the gardener with a low maintenance garden and an array of flouring plants. The open area can form the centre of the garden’s attraction and a great space to view wildlife, even if it is a big grasshopper munching away on your Barberton daisies.

Now is the ideal time to enrich your garden’s soil
20
Having a beautiful green lawn with lush plant growth adds to that friendly, lively feeling every home should have. With winter here we need to focus on enriching our soil, as this is the basis for all plant and tree growth. Using organic compost can encourage plush plant and tree growth. It helps retain moisture and suppresses plant disease and pests.
Compost is the end result of organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled. With the use of a specialised mushroom infused compost you reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and encourage the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus, a rich nutrient filled material. Compost returns all the valuable nutrients to the soil to help maintain soil quality and fertility. It is a slow release natural fertilizer that won’t burn plants like some chemical fertilizers will. The texture created by the combination of sand, silt, clay and compost is ideal for drainage and water retention and helps tender roots penetrate the surface more easily. As little as a 5% increase in organic material will quadruple the water-holding capacity of soil, decreasing water runoff. Using compost prevents erosion as it loosens tightly bound particles in clay or silt, which allows roots to spread more easily.
At Justgreen Landscaping we only make use of the best quality compost on the market from the most reputable suppliers in the industry. We will gladly assist in providing the correct organic compost and give you the right advice to turn your garden into the tranquil happy space you deserve. Landscaping a garden can change the atmosphere of any home. Justgreen Landscaping is committed to giving the customer exactly what they need and want to achieve the most suitable, tranquil outdoor space. How to create a space that is functional and stylish this
winter season The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
Our design philosophy is that a successful design is capturing any design style in a functional and tasteful manner. A home is one of the most important investments for anyone, and it must be worth every cent you have spent on it. It should be a comfort haven, and should leave you feeling inspired and should always leave you feeling inspired and rejuvenated. By Lindiwe Mabizela, interior decorator, Signatureroom
24
Signatureroom was recently featured on Design for You on the Home Channel where Lindiwe showcased a beautifully styled contemporary home with a vintage flair to it. Take a look at the clip and see how she worked her magic!
Always begin with the shell (walls, floors & ceiling) of the home. It’s important that 90% of the walls in the home be treated in neutral. Only feature walls or floors should be spared for a bit of “play”. If you have limited space in your home, there are ways of making it look bigger. This can be achieved by bringing in more light into the room by adding a few mirrors, placed adjacent or opposite a window, so as to bounce the light off the window and into the room. Always measure the space where you would like to place furniture. It’s very important that you allow space for movement between pieces. If you cannot find furniture to fit the space, rather have it custom made as it always works out best that way. Bigger spaces, on the other hand, are always exciting to work with and you can easily be tricked into overfilling them with clutter and end up with a lot of confusion. Bigger spaces allow you to use bigger pieces of furniture to separate sections of the space in the home in a clever way. They also allow you to play with darker colours, especially darker furniture as it is easily absorbed into the space instilling the feeling of comfort. Be careful of the use of strong colours though, as they can be overpowering in a large space. Allow colours and textures to flow into
each other tastefully to create harmony. Remember the quote “less is more”? When it comes to decorating your home this quote is so fitting. Whatever it is that has inspired the style chosen to decorate your space, avoid cluttering every corner of the space with too many elements of that style. This can be very overwhelming and can easily kill the significance of it. It is also important to invest more in the larger furniture pieces of your home and to keep them in a neutral tone. This is your first step to giving your home a timeless feel because when seasons change, so do the trends. Keeping a neutral base will allow you to evolve with the trends by simply changing accents. This is also a cost-effective way to bring the excitement of change into your home each season. Winter has arrived and we need our spaces to feel all warm and cosy. Textures, textures and textures!! That is the key word to bringing in warmth and liveliness into our spaces this winter. Use textures in the form of velvets for scatters and throws for your bedrooms and living areas. Try using Jacquard as it brings in that chic luxurious feel for your window treatments, while bringing in that desired warmth to your space. Also play a lot with fabulous winter colours like navy, mustard, green, burgundy and cream for all your accents in your home.
Happy Decorating!!!!
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
I
n order to successfully get all of these things, your home should be decorated in such a way that it tells a beautiful story of you, accentuated by the things you love. Optimizing on your space, whether big or small, is key!

ESTATE NEWS
It is my privilege to yet again share some insight and experience on the process of building your dream home. Written by: Francois van Wyk PrArch 24751027 | MProf(Arch)(Cum Laude) UP
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
your home with climate control in mind
ESTATE NEWS
Windows are the eyes of the building. Having recently completed the construction of my own home, and after living there for a few months, I have learned some valuable lessons on internal climate control and how it is primarily affected by some basic architectural principles.
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
1. Northern orientation of living areas
32
Have you ever stayed in a hotel and noticed the difference between the south and north facing rooms. The north-facing rooms, generally, have a comfortable climate, while the south-facing rooms are generally colder. It is of utmost importance that your living areas and bedrooms are orientated to face north, or slightly east of north.
It is a common misconception that northern orientation is required to bring light into a building. Although this is also true, it should be noted that the primary reason for the northern orientation of living areas, is to allow direct sunlight to penetrate the interior of the house, heat the floor and radiate heat into the areas that are most frequently used. The concept of proper northern exposure should be kept in mind when considering the addition of a new patio or planting large trees that could cause overshadowing of northern windows.
2. Design windows Windows are the eyes of the building. The lens in the human eye is protected from the sun by eyelashes and eyebrows and set back into the eye socket. In the same way the windows should be protected from over exposure. Overhangs above windows or glass doors should be carefully calculated and
designed to allow winter sun into the building but keep harsh summer sun out. A good rule of thumb is that overhangs above large north facing windows or doors should protrude by a distance approximately 0,4 times the height of the window.
3. Insulate concrete slabs All concrete roof slabs must be insulated, according to building legislation. The thickness of the polystyrene is usually 90mm thick and placed on top of the concrete slab before the screed is laid over. The addition of a 50 mm thick layer of stone pebbles over the waterproofing, as required by the Estate, will also contribute to the insulative qualities of the building envelope. Proper installation of insulative materials makes a substantial difference in the internal comfort of a room, especially at night, when uninsulated roofs radiate too much latent heat into a room.
ESTATE NEWS
4. Make use of performance glass In recent years, the technology around glass has improved greatly. The many different options available on the market allow you to create spaces that feel more aligned towards the garden area. Your architect is qualified to calculate the specific requirement for performance glass in the building. Please take note that some performance glass has a dark tint or a reflective appearance, which is not allowed in the Estate.
5. Cross ventilation
The most effective way to regulate thermal comfort in your house is by means of well planned and executed cross ventilation. Make sure that your architect allows for windows that can open on two sides of a room to ensure a sufficient level of air changes. Window positions can be cleverly designed to bring cool air into the building on a low level from the southern side and expel air on a higher level in the north.
For more tips on thermal comfort and sustainable housing guidelines, please visit our website at: www.studiousaesthetics.co.za, click on The Hills and select: 06 Sustainable housing guidelines.

leasant as our winters may seem, compared to other parts of the country, three months of chilly mornings and evenings and several cold fronts, will be made worse in cold, draughty living spaces. Here are some tips to make your home look and feel cosier this season:
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018
1} Decorate with warmer tones and textures
38
2} 3}
Rich, rustic tones like reds, purples, yellows and greys, and metals like brass, bronze and copper can give any room instant warmth. Textures like faux fur, wool and patterns are also important to getting the cosy-factor right. DĂŠcor items such as scatter cushions, woollen throws, wall art, vases or even historic pieces in these tones and textures can help you create the look.
Bring the outdoors in Natural elements like grass, wood and clay contribute tremendously to the atmosphere of any room. Not only do they bring nature into your home but also add warmth.
Add a rug or two, or three A home’s choice of flooring contributes largely to its inside temperatures. With most of our interiors boasting tiles, vinyl, laminated flooring or wood, adding a few furry, soft or warmer-toned rugs will add warmth both literally and figuratively.

Hang curtains
5}
Burn scented candles
Curtains will help to keep the cold out and the heat in. They also offer an instant warmer atmosphere when drawn.
Touch and sight aren’t the only senses that can appreciate the spirit of winter. Smell is an important sense to convince. Burn scented candles like sandalwood etc. to give your house the fragrance of the season. They also provide a beautiful warm glow.
6} Switch to softer lighting
Make the fireplace a focal point At the end of the day, nothing can transform a home’s cool interiors into a cosy winter haven quite as effectively as a fireplace can. It does the job! Closed combustion ovens are the ideal choice as they generate more heat for longer with less wood than traditional open fireplaces. By making your fireplace a focal point, winter will suddenly become everyone’s favourite season.

Natural immune boosting foods to eat more of this winter
The Hills ISSUE 3 | 2018

Although there are many immune boosting tablets and concoctions on the market, you can boost your immune naturally by including more of the following into your diet: 1. Garlic – Vampires aren’t the only evil that fears this pungent bulb. Garlic contains allicin, an
organosulfur compound that helps to fight infections and bacteria. Now you have an excuse to smell like garlic every day.
2. Oats – Don’t skip your morning breakie oats this winter. Not only is oats a great source of fibre
but it also contains beta-glucan, a polysaccharides that activates immune cells naturally.
with the production of white blood cells, the body’s natural line of protection. But why are we still taking a daily Vitamin C supplement instead of getting it directly from the source? Aim to eat more citrus this winter. A daily orange, squeeze of lemon in your tea or grated lime zest over a meal can help to defend your body.
4. Ginger – Ginger contains phytochemicals and antioxidants that help your body fight disease. Add some freshly grated ginger to your food or tea. Not only is it nutritious but delicious too.
5. Yoghurt – Good gut health is where a good immune system begins. And probiotics is one of the best ways to improve your gut health. Yoghurt is a great source of probiotics.

What should be in your

kids lunch boxes?
Just like you, your children need to perform mentally and physically during the day. And with 30-50% of their daily food intake taking place during “school hours, it means what you pack in their lunch boxes is essential to how they will feel and function during the day.
1.Water
H20 is needed to help the brain function optimally, enhance focus, prevent brain fatigue and headaches. Make sure your child stays hydrated during the day by packing a 500ml – 750ml BPA free bottle filled with water.
2. Colourful fruits & veg Red fruits are a good source of antioxidants, fibre and Vitamin C, while blue/purple fruits contain nutrients that help with memory. Colourful crunchy vegetables on the other hand will help your child focus better. Pack a fruit and some vegetables. For e.g. a red apple and carrot or cucumber sticks (with a humus or avo dip if needed).
3. Meat/protein
Avoid packing the following items:
Proteins assist the body with bone and muscle building. With growing children in mind this is very important. Pack slices of meat (separate or on a sandwich), a hardboiled egg, nut butters or any other item high in protein your child enjoys.

The Dead Sea Scrolls
In 1947 children were playing and searching for their sheep in caves. When they threw rocks into a cave they heard something break. It sounded like pots. Here, they found fragments and pieces of the Bible, which later became known as the Dead Sea scrolls. After careful investigation the scripts were found to be from of the Old Testament, but they were a thousand years older than the scripts of today. They also found a small town with tables and chairs of the Qur’an people nearby.

Where it all started
52
While Mr. Coenrad Scheepers, a resident of The Hills Estate, was studying theology at the University of Pretoria he heard about this interesting subject, biblical archaeology, and that Prof Eybers was taking the students to different places to dig up artefacts and old cities. While he was busy with the practical aspect of the theological material excavations, he realised that he had a passion for archaeology. After the army, a friend told him that they needed someone at UNISA to help with the subject and
six months later the professor past away, so he carried on with the subject and took the groups on archaeology tours. One of the oldest places they visited was the city of Jericho, which is 7000 years B.C. Most of the ancient cities like Tel Megiddo is a mound where they built cities over and over on top of the same mound.
One of his best findings A golden plate from the Bronze Age. The plate was of the Goddess Hathor where she stood on a horse.
In Dor they found an item containing multiple pieces of silver, which was hidden In the floor. These silver coins were dated 1500 – 1700 years B.C. But at that time there were no coins yet. Coins only originated from about 300 B.C. They also found ivory pieces in furniture.
All plates, pots and bowls were made out of clay and by examining the edge of the object it would tell you what it was and how it was used.
