Once again, a friendly hello from all of us at the estate office. We trust that you are staying warm with the winter chill settling into our estate quite rapidly by now. We have received quite a few enquiries about the recent guided walk and gin tasting events in the game reserve hosted by Century Property Developments and Carlita’s which proved to be a huge success. Many of you indicated that you would be very interested in joining another such event in future. Our residents especially enjoyed the knowledge shared by the experienced guide on the beautiful habitat and natural 8 | ISSUE 3 | 2021
wildlife that our estate has to offer. Unfortunately, only a limited number of persons could be accommodated on each occasion due to catering requirements and the current restrictions on the gathering of large numbers of people. As the popularity of such events is quite evident, we will be looking at doing something similar again in future. And speaking of the game reserve, for those of you who are interested in the numbers of game that we have inside the reserve at the moment, these are the latest figures according to the most recent head count:

In addition to this, an abundance of small game such as Duiker and Steenbuck also call our Estate home and they frequent both the reserve as well as the green belt area outside of the game fence (also not forgetting our diversity of birdlife). We are also planning to introduce a small herd of Red Hartebeest in the near future as the terrain that we have at The Hills is quite suitable for them. We will advise you as soon as they become available for translocation so that you can be on the lookout for these beautiful animals. While we are on the subject of wildlife, we would also like to gauge the potential interest for an informative session on the snakes found in our area to be arranged with the African Snakebite Institute, seeing as we regularly get into contact with these much feared and often misunderstood reptiles. You are welcome to let us know should you see the value in and be in support of something like this.
Lastly, I would like to make a friendly appeal to all residents to be mindful of their neighbours when it comes to noise and disturbance. We all invite our guests over for a nice get-together from time to time but the excessive volume of music and loud voices until late at night can really make life difficult for those around us. This also applies to the use of noisy garden equipment on days such as Sundays when our residents generally want to have a quiet and restful time at home with their families. Let us therefore respect each other’s peace in the interest of good neighbourliness and a harmonious community and I really appreciate your willingness to oblige. Until next time then, friendly greetings to you all and take good care of yourselves.

Wintertime in an Eco-Estate such as ours is, unfortunately, a stressful time for us as we need to be very vigilant for veld fires, luckily our training focus on veld fire prevention. In the past three years, we have managed to prevent the eco area from burning down, the fires we did have were all from building sites and machinery, it was contained very quickly. We recently handed out letters at the contractor’s gate, informing contractors of the risks. All residents are encouraged to notify security if they suspect contractors not acting safely. Any smoke must be reported as soon as possible for security to investigate. Security must unfortunately report theft at construction sites. Wheelbarrows, building equipment, and electrical material were taken during April. We again ask all owners to make sure their construction site storage areas are secure. We encourage residents to report any movements on construction sites especially after hours. Many reports indicate that contractors were on site, left for home, and on their return found building equipment was missing. The Boschkop CPF is back and the first meeting since March 2020 took place in April 2021. SAPS reported low crime numbers. This presented a big problem after reports from sector representatives reported a large amount of crime. The numbers show that only 15% of crime occurring in the police area is reported. The fact that the community is
willing to accept crime and not report is a massive concern.
SAPS created a task team to deal with the “spike in road” crime tendency. Lynwood road is identified as a “hotspot”. According to the SAPS, the group uses spikes over the road method to force vehicles to stop and then they rob the vehicle driver and passengers. What we have learned from the past is that crime moves as soon as police or any other law enforcement agency focus on an area. Concerns are that it can move to Atterbury road and Garsfontein road. Garsfontein road towards the R25 Bronkhorstspruit road. The Only advice in incidents like this is the following: • If you drive over spikes do not slam on the brakes. Important do not over speed. Hitting spikes at a high speed will cause the vehicle to leave the road. Make it a rule to drive slower if you have to drive at night. • The vehicle will already be unstable. Remove feet from the accelerator. Try to keep the vehicle on road. • Slowdown but remain moving. Tyres will be destroyed and you will have wheel rim damage. A vehicle that moves cannot be robbed by suspects. • Move vehicle slowly towards any place not close to the spikes for example a fuel station. 2021 | I SSUE 3 | 13

Award Omega received a reward for excellent service delivery. The reward was issued by Bloodhound File 13 for the year 2020. The Hills eco-estate purchased the system that is a GPS based system. The points are plotted on google maps. The points cover all parts of the Estate and concentrate on possible vulnerable areas and areas with high importance for example a substation. The system allows us to add or remove points and the patrol results are measurable. The percentages are divided between the reaction officer, supervisor, and foot patrollers. Supervisor also has the checklist device. In this system, questions must be completed and photos must be taken before he is allowed to move to the next point. Points for example outside perimeter patrols, security posts, and locked gates are points that are covered and proof provided with photos. Omega officers working at The Hills Estate averaged a 97% patrol success for 2020. Stay Safe and keep your distance,

SPEEDING Being a qualified driver is the best. You have the freedom to hop in the car and drive wherever and whenever you want. The thing you have to watch out for, though, is getting too comfortable (or downright cocky!) behind the wheel and letting your standards slip. One of the most common offences motorists across the country are guilty of is speeding, in and around residential areas. It can be very tempting, when running late or in an irritable mood, to push the accelerator pedal that little bit harder and exceed the speed limit of 30 km/h. Believe us when we tell you that this nasty little habit can get out of control fast. Just because you have the power to drive at silly-km’s-per-hour does not mean that you should.
The Estate Rules regarding speeding. Plenty of motorists might not take speeding that seriously, but the law certainly does. Limits are put
in place for a reason and there are consequences if you do not stick to the rules. The streets within The Hills Game Reserve and Lifestyle Estate are for the use of all residents of the Estate, their visitors, contractors and emergency vehicles and all motorists will be expected to comply with all Road Traffic Act legislation and respect pedestrian and wildlife right of way. Speed limit of 30 KM/H to be maintained at all times If you or your visitors are caught speeding by our cameras, you can expect to face the following: Speed of 40 to 50 KM/H R500-00 per incident Speed of 50 to 60 KM/H R1000-00 per incident Speed of 60 to 80 KM/H R2 500-00 per incident Speed of 80 KM/H & above R5000-00 per incident It remains the owners and or tenant’s responsibility to inform guests/visitors of speed requirements

How To Keep Grass Green In Winter Source: grassfactory.co.za
It might seem your lawn is dormant in winter, but it’s how the grass is cared for during this period which will make the difference to the overall health and beauty of it during the summer.
A
much faster in the winter than the grass, as the lawns are lying dormant during this time. If weeds aren’t controlled and permitted to grow wild over the winter, there may be very little grass left when summer comes along.
Also keep in mind that weed growth does take place in summer only, the opposite is true. Weeds grow
It’s a good idea to scarify the lawn in late winter, just before spring. Planning ahead is very important. You need short dry grass for raking or scarifying so bring the grass height down gradually over a week or two
ll leaves and other debris on the grass must conscientiously be raked up and put in the compost bin during autumn. The lawn will not receive proper moisture, nutrients, sunlight and air if the leaves are left on the grass. While most lawns do not grow at all during winter, they can still die if buried under any kind of debris.

Plan promote germination to rake or scarify on a dry day, afternoons are often best. Once the seed is done, turn on the water. The idea is to keep the seeds moist over the 14 days. This Cover the lawn with a fine layer of lawn may require watering three times per day – early dressing once the grass has been cut. You morning, late afternoon and middle of the night – can buy your lawn dressing at Grass Factory if restrictions permit. Be careful not to overwater. Standing puddles can drown the grass seed.

S T E P S TO A H E A LT H Y L AW N . 1. Mark irrigation heads to avoid damage during mowing
5. Fertilize lawn to stimulate root growth After the seeds germinate, apply a starter fertilizer to stimulate root growth. Choose a fertilizer that is high in potassium and phosphorus, but not necessarily nitrogen. Nitrogen is more for stimulating growth of foliage and mature grass.
6. After lawn fills in, mow for the first time About 10 days after fertilizing, the lawn should be filled in with the winter grass. At that time, mow for the first time. Mowing prior to that could actually pull the grass from its roots rather than clip it.
For areas that are irrigated, flag all sprinkler heads, especially if rotors are used. Rotors tend to stick up a half-inch or more and could get damaged by lawn mower blades during the scalping process. 7. Reseed any spots where first seeding
did not take hold 2. Closely mow, or scalp, the lawn close to the ground After the first mow, it may be necessary to reseed Two passes on the mower will be necessary to adequately remove all the grass and any thatch from the lawn. It’s best to bag the clippings for a debrisfree lawn that enables the best penetration of seed. Ideally, the first mowing should remove all of the top growth by cutting about half the height of the grass. The second pass should cut the remaining growth as close to the dirt as possible while leaving some grass as a cover for the seed.
3. Apply ryegrass seed generously across the lawn Overseed the lawn using a rotary spreader that typically is used for applying fertilizers and bug control granules. It’s best to put down 10 lbs. of seed per 1,000 square feet of law. Typically, an average residential yard is 5,000 square feet, so 50 lbs. Use the highest setting on the spreader to fully cover the lawn.
spots where the grass did not take for whatever reason. It’s best to do this by hand, applying an evenly spread and generous amount of seed into the area. If seeding a bare spot, the seeds only need to touch the soil.
8. Fertilize during winter season to keep grass green Fertilize two or three times during the winter season to give the winter grass strength. Using a greater amount of nitrogen will help top growth and keep the lawn looking green throughout the winter, even as summer grass goes dormant. As winter turns to spring, it’s best to do another scalping to remove winter grass going dormant as summer grass comes to life. Fertilizing again will ensure that your lawn has a healthy start to the spring.

Gym Manager Are ABS really made in the kitchen?
As for the other half of the equation, you need to do 2 types of exercise: Cardio & Resistance. Cardio exercise burns major calories and will help curb your appetite. Also significantly increases serotonin production in the body. Resistance training builds lean muscle that boosts your metabolism and helps you burn calories even after your workout is over. So, whether you choose running & weights or swimming & Pilates, find a combination that works for you.
Be kind to your Body Depending on your body type, getting a sculpted midsection can be tough. Other, less controllable factors come into play, like hormones and genetics. So, remember to be kind to your body. Train because it is good for your heart, your muscles, your bones, and your mind. Eat well because you want to nourish your body. And occasionally, let it all go and just enjoy! Life is all about balance.
The phrase is pretty self-explanatory – you won’t get to see your abs if a healthy diet isn’t part of your plan.
We have a Gym Broadcast List
Sure, diet is important when it comes to losing belly fat and getting visible abs, but that is not the whole story; exercise plays a role as well. Getting the flat midsection you desire, or getting your six pack to show, requires a combination of both healthy eating and consistent training.
If you would like to be added and kept up to date with all that is happening at the Fitness Centre, please do the following:
In the kitchen The foods we eat play an important role in how we look physically. You can build muscles in the gym, but to see the definition of those muscles you must follow a healthy eating plan. IMMUNE SUPPORT: A FOURFACTOR APPROACH By Nikki Temkin
Functional Health and Wellness Coach Nikki Temkin shares tips and advice for how you can support your immune system by focusing on four key aspects: supplementation, nutrition, stress management and sleep. Protecting and boosting immune health has been more important than ever over the past few months, and will no doubt continue to be a priority for us all for some time to come. While it’s true that you can’t control the trajectory of a virus, you can take steps to control your internal environment through what you choose to put into your body, what you expose yourself to, and the lifestyle you lead. Strengthening immunity requires a multifaceted approach that will improve its response and reduce your susceptibility to illness. 2 6 | ISSUE 3 | 2021
VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS Even with a healthy, well-balanced diet, supplements are still recommended for maximum support. The following are suggested for immune support: Vitamin C Contributes to immune defence by supporting various cellular functions of the immune system Vitamin D Reduces viral growth and helps to prevent upper respiratory infections For maximum absorption, take with a large meal, and increase the dosage in winter when there is less sunlight. Vitamin A Acts as an anti-inflammatory, helps to enhance immune function, and supports the lining of the respiratory tract Vitamin A also protects the integrity of the body’s mucus membranes (such as those in the gut and lungs), making it harder for infections to take hold.

Curcumin A set of flavonoids found in turmeric that can help to reduce inflammation and decrease viral activity Melatonin Made by the pineal gland at the base of the brain, this hormone supports antiviral immunity, promotes restful sleep and reduces inflammation. You will need a prescription for this! Medicinal Mushrooms Medicinal mushrooms support the immune system thanks to their antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antiviral properties. Try turkey tail and reishi for protection against infection.
You can also try: *Omega 3 *Glutathione *Alpha-lipoic acid *Echinacea *Astralagus Note: It is important to consult your doctor or healthcare provider before taking any kind of vitamin, mineral, mushroom or supplement. The appropriate dosage will be different for everyone, and is affected by factors such as gender, weight, pre-existing conditions, pregnancy and any medication that you may be taking (such as birth control, antidepressants, antibiotics, etc.). Be sure to contact your healthcare provider to find out exactly what dosage you should be taking.

THE RENAISSANCE OF FUN:
HOW TO REVIVE YOUR
OUTDOOR SPACES
From the elaborate follies scattered through the world’s more lavish gardens to secret garden nooks and playful mazes, the idea of outdoor spaces encouraging enjoyment - being places to experience happiness and share joy among friends - is not a new one. Yet in modern life, the power of playful energy and the lightness it brings to our wellbeing is often underestimated.
Kim Williams, Cape Town-based Creative Behaviour Strategist focused on designing interior spaces, knows that the mindful design of outdoor spaces profoundly impacts our physical and mental wellness, and she believes that few things can awaken the soul like laughter outdoors.
Here Are Kim’s Top Tips When Creating Playful And Inviting Outdoor Spaces: Add a little fun Playful living in outdoor spaces has endless unconventional options especially for those who are designing outdoor spaces with children in mind. If you are fortunate to have a pool, adding funky lilos and wacky water features is a simple option. 3 2 | ISSUE 3 | 2021
Colour is also a great way to spruce up an outdoor space and can be as simple as changing up your cushions, or putting your beach towels up on hooks, or as grand as commissioning a mural from a talented local artist. Personally, Kim loves using locally made sculptures in gardens to make them feel elegant yet playful.
Technology can be magical The technology that exists for our outdoor spaces is absolutely incredible. Decks that can slide to cover pools with the flip of a switch, irrigation systems that can water your garden from anywhere in the world through a simple app, and pergolas that incorporate protector screens and create private outdoor theatres, can add a sense of magic to your play space.
THE | DECOR
There is also recycled technology, such as beautiful new composite decking, that is more resistant to the elements and doesn’t need to be maintained – meaning you have more time enjoying your outdoor space instead of maintaining it.
Consider and respect the elements As much as we all love nature, being battered by the wind as the braai smoke blows into your eyes and the sun beats down on your skin is not pleasant. Make sure you know which direction your home and garden are orientated so that you get a good reading on how protected your space is and if you need to create additional protection from the wind. Analyse how the sun moves through your space and create areas dedicated to introducing a little fun and playfulness. Beach umbrellas and picnic blankets add a touch of colour for events or special occasions, and lilo’s and beach balls can add a playful spirit. Place importance to how the sunlight catches materials, colours and patterned fabrics you use. Naturally, you want finishes that are going to withstand the weather and the ageing effect that the sun has on fabrics. The kind of furniture you choose should be selected both for its beauty and resilience, particularly if the property is close to the ocean.
Be mindful in minimal spaces The most important thing with an outdoor space, particularly small spaces, is to make it feel like an extension of the house by creating a connection to the greater design scheme. Flooring is a great way to do this, and decking, stone, tiles, and even artificial grass are wonderful options. The technology and quality of artificial lawns have long surpassed something reminiscent of a school cricket pitch and artificial lawns interwoven with pavers or patterned tiles make an area more interesting. The trick when selecting an artificial lawn is to make sure it has some brown in it so it looks natural. For small spaces, Kim prefers creating wrap-around elevated planting areas with a lovely wooded or tiled wall to create the feeling that nature is enveloping you as you enter the area.
2021 | I SSUE 3 | 33
DECOR | THE
Using soft furnishings like a cushion around the area also helps. Lastly, if you can build or renovate your home, when you are designing make sure that you can see the outside area from anywhere indoors, so you can have one eye on your kids.
Make use of colour

Kim muses that the wealth and quality of South African designers are phenomenal, with the furniture range by Douglas and Douglas being one of her favourites. Martin Haldene’s outdoor furniture brings a modern retro look to the outside space and makes it feel fun as his use of colour is masterful. There is a plethora of new fabrics that can be used outside that have vibrant patterns and incredible lightfastness; making them a reliable and creative way to repurpose design elements you already have in your space. There are also gorgeous new planters available that can be used as features or as places for plants to stand as architectural objects.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE: A LI F E S T YL E D E S TIN AT I O N LI KE NO O T HER
C
onveniently positioned in the well-known Main Road dip between Witkoppen and Kyalami, Jaguar Land Rover Experience is just that – a lifestyle hub where, besides experiencing the luxury car brands’ latest models, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of motoring-focussed activities right in the heart of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. This is a lifestyle centre like no other in South Africa where friends of the brands, Jaguar Land Rover customers and anyone from the public is invited to spend a day, or at least part thereof, delving into the worlds of two of the most loved carmakers. Opened in 2019, Jaguar Land Rover Experience is the second of its kind in the world, the first in the southern hemisphere and the largest by some margin. The facility, which takes on a similar appearance to one of Jaguar Land Rover’s world-class dealerships but offers so much more, is located on the outskirts of Lonehill on 14 hectares of forest shrubland where a number of off-road trails and tarmac tracks are available to put the entire lineup of Jaguars and Land Rovers to the test. But the vehicle testing grounds form only part of the entire offering, so read on for an overview of the exciting opportunities anyone is invited to explore seven days a week.
FOR THE KIDDIES
FOR THE GROWN UPS
Jaguar Land Rover caters to its youngest fans with a selection of fun-filled activities including the Little Growlers track where kids up to 3 can drive (or be driven by remote control) in miniature electric F-TYPE sportscars. There’s also a pair of scalesized electric Defenders which children up to 10 can practice early adventuring skills by negotiating a dedicated off-road track.
There’s no better way to experience the exhilaration of a Jaguar or Land Rover than getting behind the wheel yourself. The full range of vehicle models is available for an array of driving courses all hosted by a team of skilled instructors from Tuesday to Sunday.
An indoor-outdoor play area offers the perfect distraction while parents enjoy grown-up activities, and features a jungle-gym, plush playground toys, games tables and soft AstroTurf ground surfaces. Child minders are on-site to look after kids from 9am to 4pm Wednesday to Thursday, and 8am to 5pm Friday to Sunday. For the young at heart, a pair of state-of-the-art driving simulators afford would-be racing drivers access to high-performance Jaguars on a selection of global race tracks where it’s possible to explore the absolute limit safely in digital format.
Jaguar experiences cover a range of driving disciplines from defensive driving, handling, skid control, slaloms and cornering. An irrigated 70-metre diameter Dynamic Steering Circle (skidpan) is on site for low-traction handling exercises, while a 185-metre long and 30-metre wide Dynamic Handling Platform will allow drivers to stretch the legs of various vehicles at higher speeds. If you’re pressed for time, a 90-minute taster experience is ideal to whet your appetite. If you’re looking to make a day of it, a choice of half- and full-day experiences will have your pulse racing at every chicane, cone and turn. Adventurous types can sample what Land Rovers are truly capable of on a variety of dedicated tracks and trails. These include the Kingsley Holgate Expedition Trail (3km of trail named as an homage to the longtime Land Rover friend and global ambassador Kingsley Holgate) or the Adventure park which features a number of man-made obstacles adjacent to the facility itself and in full view of visitors gasping in awe of Land Rovers and Range Rovers in extreme situations. Depending on the package, drivers will be exposed to different disciplines including dynamic handling, vehicle recovery and off-road driving to name a few.

Winter
In Gauteng we are blessed with long summers and mild winters. it is perhaps why most of our homes’ layout and interiors have been planned with this in mind.

P
leasant as our winters may seem, compared to other parts of the country, three months of chilly mornings and evenings and several cold fronts, will be made worse in cold, draughty living spaces. Here are some tips to make your home look and feel cosier this season: Decorate with warmer tones and textures Rich, rustic tones like reds, purples, yellows and greys, and metals like brass, bronze and copper can give any room instant warmth. Textures like faux fur, wool and patterns are also important to getting the cosy-factor right. Décor items such as scatter cushions, woollen throws, wall art, vases or even historic pieces in these tones and textures can help you create the look. Bring the outdoors in Natural elements like grass, wood and clay contribute tremendously to the atmosphere of any room. Not only do they bring nature into your home but also add warmth.
Add a rug or two, or three A home’s choice of flooring contributes largely to its inside temperatures. With most of our interiors boasting tiles, vinyl, laminated flooring or wood, adding a few furry, soft or warmer-toned rugs will add warmth both literally and figuratively.

Curtains will help to keep the cold out and the heat in. They also offer an instant warmer atmosphere when drawn.
Burn scented candles Touch and sight aren’t the only senses that can appreciate the spirit of winter. Smell is an important sense to convince. Burn scented candles like sandalwood etc. to give your house the fragrance of the season. They also provide a beautiful warm glow.

Switch to softer lighting Apart from candles bring in other forms of warmer light by switching globes and adding a few floor lamps. Make the fireplace a focal point At the end of the day, nothing can transform a home’s cool interiors into a cosy winter haven quite as effectively as a fireplace can. It does the job! Closed combustion ovens are the ideal choice as they generate more heat for longer with less wood than traditional open fireplaces. By making your fireplace a focal point, winter will suddenly become everyone’s favourite season. https://woodwicksa.co.za/
