Smart Village Master Plan and Hilltop Garden Site Design
This greenfield site is located just west of Virginia Tech’s campus and is where the university proposes a new “Smart Village live/work community. Currently, much of the 400 acre site is used as pasture land and contains several research facilities for wildlife science and building construction. Our proposed community seeks to bring agricultural research out of the labs and into the scope of community life where residents can choose to engage in. Hilltop Park is inspired by the heritage drawn from clear views to the pasture land and weaves passive and playful agriculture into the daily lives of residents
1
District Concept: Weaving Agriculture into the Fabric of Community The arrows symbolize the framework of different modes of agriculture and the way they’re expressed in different areas. These expressions are classified in four broad categories: community, urban, historical (traditional), and research agriculture. These arrows lead to the town center, where the identity of a community tends to lend itself to.

Turner Walk at Virginia Tech Located on the northwest portion of Virginia Tech’s campus along Old Turner Street, the Turner Walk is anticipated to be a key entryway between the top of downtown Blacksburg and the academic region of campus. As such, it seeks to provide a strong sense of direction for newcomers, provide spaces and functions to draw students into this underutilized space. Similarly, the site sits in between the Ware Lab, where research on cars and electric vehicles is done by students and faculty, the VT Power Plant, and the Mechanical Arts Building, a studio space for the School of Visual Arts. This corridor will showcase the many instances where art and engineering overlap, and provides outdoor work space and amenities for these academic buildings.
7
District Concept: Engineering & Art Overlapping The idea of overlapping art and engineering centers around the way math can be used to express proportion, as well as bringing technology such as lighting into arcing brush-stroke-like pathways. The Fibonacci spiral and sequence of numbers are utilized to create a raised lawn seating area and lighted paver bands across the main avenue. Special consideration is given to the way people circulate and occupy different spaces on site.

Department of Defense Brownfield Master Plan Situated 11 km from the CBD of Melbourne, this brownfield site served the Department of Defense and contained the factories which supplied ANZAC during both World Wars and an administrative center until the 90s. While the site is no longer in use by the DoD, many of the buildings that make up the compound still remain. Given the site’s rich history and thinking about the elements that contribute to a successful and efficient factory, this new development seeks to join distinct neighborhoods into a larger community with a strong sense of identity.

Europe Study Abroad Sample Sketches For five weeks, professors in the College of Architecture and Urban Affairs guided us through Western Europe in an exploration of the built environment across different cities. Starting in Italy with Rome, Sienna, and Venice, analysis of what makes piazzas flexible, functional, and vital spaces was gleaned. We then moved to Germany and Austria, studying memorial spaces as well as post war reconstruction. Finally, we ended in Copenhagen, where postmodern design and industrial design are at the pinnacle of life in Scandinavia.
