ECONOMY Italy’s gdp is $35,800 per capita and a growth rate of 0.8%. Italy has a diversified economy, which is divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less-developed, highly subsidized, agricultural south, where unemployment is higher. The Italian economy is driven in large part by the manufacture of high-quality consumer goods produced by small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them family-owned. Italy is the third-largest economy in the euro-zone, but its exceptionally high public debt and structural impediments to growth have rendered it vulnerable to scrutiny by fiFINANCIAL markets. Public debt has increased steadily since 2007, topping 135% of GDP in 2015, but investor concerns about Italy and the broader euro-zone crisis eased in 2013, bringing down Italy’s borrowing costs on sovereign government debt from euro-era records. The government still faces pressure from investors and European partners to sustain its efforts to address Italy’s long-standing structural impediments to growth, such as labor market inefficiencies and tax evasion. In 2014 economic growth and labor market conditions continued to deteriorate, with overall unemployment rising to 12.7% and youth unemployment around 40%, but Italy began to recover in 2015, with marginal growth and a slight reduction in unemployment. Italy and the US have had amiable relations and two-way trade in 2015 totaling $59 billion. CIA.GOV

POLITICAL OVER THE PAST 3,000 YEARS THE ITALIAN PENINSULA HAS BEEN IN THE MIDST OF MANY MIGRATIONS, INVASIONS AND WERE DIVIDED BY ITS MANY FOREIGN INFLUENCES AND GEOGRAPHY. DUE TO THIS, ITALIAN CITY-STATES WERE FRAGMENTED FOR MANY YEARS. VITTORIO EMANUELE II UNITED ITALY, AS ITS FIRST KING, IN 1861. IN 1922, BENITO MUSSOLINI WAS INVITED TO FORM A GOVERNMENT WITH KING VITTORIO EMANUELE III BUT MUSSOLINI DISSOLVED THE PARLAIMENT AND CREATED A FASCIST REGIME AND WAS PART OF THE AXIS POWERS. AFTER DISMISSING MUSSOLINI DURING WW-II, ITALY JOINED THE ALLIES AND A NEW CONSITUTION WAS MADE IN 1948 FOR A REPUBLICAN SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT REPLACING THE MONARCHY.
