A director’s note: The name of the play is ‘Buddhijibi’, which is the very first production of my theatre group ‘Ichheymoto’. I am known as a standup comedian, then why suddenly this theatre group? I am asked this question almost a thousand times. Let’s have my answer in this so called director’s note. It was not a sudden jerk. I did a number of street theatres in my college days and political satire was always my favorite subject. I joined a professional theatre group and did a number of stage performances but that time I was totally in to my television shows and cinemas. It was really difficult to keep myself disciplined in a theatre group. On the other hand starting my own theatre team was a difficult job. It requires lot of thoughts, work ownerships, team members, and lot of technical and theatrical knowledge. I took the risk, kept the name ‘Ichheymoto’ so that we carry our amateur works. After all this is also entertainment art and stage performance, so I had idea of its negative sides. Maximum I will get some flop star nick names and vacant auditorium for shows. That is always acceptable for me as an entertainer. I preferably selected political satire as my initial subject as it was also my genre in standup shows. Me and Anurag wrote our first satire. I kept its name ‘Buddhijibi’ as it had an USP and goes a little with the subject of the play. It was a zigzag road trip from the first day rehearsal to our very first show on May, 2014. Definitely there was no punctuality, no rule in rehearsals; it was all ‘Ichheymoto’. But somewhere a hidden seriousness worked in everyone. Cream on the cake was Mir Afsar Ali. It was more like routine picnic than a rehearsal of a professional group theatre. We were quite sure about our failures. I was ready for thrown eggs and shoes but somehow it worked oppositely. I couldn’t believe people liked it. In today’s date we got a good number of shows and call shows in very few months. I called it a success. Oh! Yes, this time I was little literate to work on alienation form. So, we tighten our pants and fasten our belts for the next. Smaranjit Chakroborty has given us ‘Unsent Letters’. It is a collection of letters. Mir Da and Turna made it absolutely a master piece. Thanks to all, this is how it is going. Being very honest we didn’t expect anything more either. We will try to do some more if audience can tolerate and allow us. Regards Saurav Palodhi
